How to spend the day in
Worcester County
W
orcester County is Maryland’s only seaside county. Although best known for Ocean City’s sandy beaches, the county offers a wide range of unique attractions, from historic towns to lazy rivers to Assateague Island State Park and National Seashore. Worcester County also has the best birding in Maryland, more than a dozen championship golf courses, and 100 miles of marked bicycle trails on flat country roads. The Pocomoke River, which has been designated a wild and scenic river by the state, is a centerpiece of the county. Its surrounding wetlands serve as sanctuary for more than 127 species of birds and waterfowl. Sightings of rare birds such as the pilliated woodpecker and bald eagle are common in the swampy reaches of the river. Canoe, kayak and standup paddle board rentals allow paddlers to get even closer to the wildlife and the bald cypress swamps. There’s several water trails in the coastal bays and Pocomoke River varying in length but all relatively easy.
Ocean City Boardwalk Top Ten Boardwalks in America - National Geographic Traveler At the county’s southern tip, Pocomoke City is a place where river life is celebrated. Visitors can picnic among the water lilies or walk along a nature trail in Cypress Park. Pocomoke City’s commercial district features a wide range of 19th and early 20th century architecture, including the Delmarva Discovery Center and the art deco Marva Theater. Other attractions include the Costen House Museum, home of the city’s first mayor, and the Sturgis One Room School House Museum. The big news this summer is the addition of an otter exhibit opening at the Delmarva Discovery Center. The Center is located downtown, right along the river (where else?), the Discovery Center focuses on river ecology; the history of the Pocomoke River, including shipbuilding, trading and fishing; and local Native American history. There are lots of hands on fun for kids of all ages. Afterwards, grab a bite at the Riverside Grill, located on the water next to the Discovery Center.
Berlin voted Coolest Small Town in America -Budget Travel Magazine Snow Hill, the county seat, is a collage of handsome churches and manicured Colonial and Victorian-style homes. A walking tour brochure guides visitors through the historic district, filled with 100 houses more than 100 years old. Just five miles up the road, Furnace Town is the home of the National Historical Mechanical Engineering Land-mark- the Nassawango Iron Furnace. If it sounds intimidating, it isn’t. Families in particular will enjoy a relaxing and educational visit to a reconstructed 19th century village featuring the iron furnace, a print shop, a 19th century organic garden, woodworker and brooms and looms. Perhaps the best attraction is the river with paddling events, trails and wildlife. Not surprisingly, it has been dubbed the (next) Best Paddling Town by Canoe & Kayak Magazine. Just a few miles inland, Berlin proudly sports a restored downtown, filled with interesting buildings and delicious shops and restaurants. Berlin was recently named by Budget Travel as the Coolest Small Town in America (2014). Berlin has many structures on either the National Register of Historic Places or on the Maryland State Register. Visitors can explore downtown’s historic charm on foot or by a horse-drawn carriage ride which operates daily throughout the summer.
Assateague Island— Best Beach Camping -The Travel Channel The downtowns of Berlin and Snow Hill are both designated by Maryland as “Arts and Entertainment Districts.” As defined by Americans for the Arts, such districts must be in mixed-use areas where there is a high concentration of arts and cultural facilities. To show off their best A & E features, Snow Hill hosts First Friday-Arts on the River and Berlin hosts Second Friday Art Strolls each month. Both open their galleries in the evening, allowing visitors to see the work of local and regional artists, and in some cases, to meet the artists at special receptions. There’s also dancing (and music) in the streets and at various venues around the towns. Wild horses can’t drag people away from Assateague Island, Maryland’s only ocean park. Its features include sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, coastal bays and, of course, those wild ponies. A unique treasure of Assateague Island, visitors can observe them wandering the beaches, trails, campgrounds and marsh areas. Both the State Park and the National Seashore offer ranger-guided programs that encourage
visitors of all ages to learn more about the barrier island environment and its wildlife. The island offers canoe, kayak and bike rentals at the end of Bayside Drive.

reathe in the fresh salt-tinged air to your heart’s content and bask in warm vitamin-D laced sunshine while taking an invigorating walk in soothing sand with lapping waves over your sore feet. Vitamin D research is all the craze. Some doc’s swear we don’t get enough and a key source is, you guessed it, the sun! When the sun’s UV-B rays touch the skin, our bodies naturally make Vitamin D. But moderation comes into play here. Skin cancer is nothing to play around with so don’t stretch that 15 minutes into a 1 hour siesta in the full sun. Be careful to cover up and use sun tan lotion. Boardwalk, every Wednesday evening during July and August. At the Boardwalk’s northern end at 27th Street, free movies and the Family Beach Olympics are held on the beach on selected evenings during the summer. Ocean City residents and visitors are not the only ones who think Ocean City is the best place in the world to be, as the Ocean City Boardwalk has drawn numerous accolades over the years. Sherman’s Travel named it one of the “10 Best U.S. Boardwalks” in 2010. Reader’s Digest named it “One of America’s “Best Seaside Strolls” in 2006. USA Today ranked Ocean City “One of the 10 Great Places to have Fun on the Boardwalk.” The Travel Channel noted it as “One of the “Best Boardwalks in America,” and just last year Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice ranked Ocean City’s Boardwalk one of the “Top 10 Amusement Parks and Boardwalk in the U.S.” If you are looking for another way to experience the sights and sounds of Ocean City’s Boardwalk, hop aboard the Boardwalk tram. The tram operates from the Inlet to 27th Street, a distance of almost three miles. The Ocean City Boardwalk is certainly an experience that we hope all of our visitors enjoy!

ith the Gulf Stream funneling towards the MD and Delaware beaches, ocean fishing brings bigeye and yellowfin tuna just a short sail from shore, as are bluefish & wahoo. Other great catches include mako, mahi-mahi, white marlin, blue marlin & even an occasional sailfish. The 4th Annual Huk Big Fish Classic on July 28-30th 2017 is set to be one of the largest Sport Fishing Tournaments in the Mid Atlantic this summer. The format is simple, catch the biggest fish that swims in the Atlantic! Teams have the ability to fish all day and night for 32 hours straight to find that winning fish. All the teams will weigh in at the Historic Talbot Street Pier in front of M R Ducks in downtown Ocean City. For spectators, the weigh in of the fish at the scales is amazing. over the bay while music food and drinks are served while Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Mako Sharks, Big Eye Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, and Mahi Mahi are brought in by the offshore boats. Over $333,000 was paid out in 2016 with the winning Blue Marlin weighing in at 407 lbs caught aboard the “Marli and winning over $105,000. That fish was over 10 feet long! The Huk Big Fish Classic has raised over $28,000 for charities and has donated over hundreds of pounds of fish to local shelters and has created fishing reef habitat out in the ocean. In 2016, the tournament directors, Brian Roberts, Sean Welsh, Stephen Lewis, and John Lewis dedicated funds to Diakonia, a local shelter, the Ocean City Reef Foundation and the Billfish Foundation.

Safety Tips
From the Ocean City Beach Patrol
44
Landmarks of Ocean City and Delaware Beaches
The Ocean City Beach Patrol wants you to have a safe and enjoyable stay at the beach. The following safety tips can help you enjoy your vacation. “Keep your feet in the sand, until the lifeguard’s in the stand.” Following this advice is the most important step beach patrons can take to ensure safety for themselves, their friends, and their family. Many of our most serious incidents occur either before we come on duty at 10:00 a.m. or in the evenings after we are off duty at 5:30 p.m., because lifeguards are not there to protect swimmers. Throughout Ocean City, lifeguard stands are positioned about one or two blocks apart.”
Heat
Swim Near a Lifeguard
The Beach Patrol reminds you that during hot weather drink plenty of fluids. Thirst is a sign you are already becoming de-hydrated. During hot weather or high humidity, take frequent breaks from activity and drink plenty of water. Know the signs of heat illness and at the first signs of cramps, weakness, dizziness, nausea, or light-headedness move to a cool environment.
Swim near a lifeguard. Find the closest lifeguard and ask about current conditions.
Alcohol: Alcohol consumption is one of the leading causes of heat-related emergencies on the beach. Make sure that you do not consume alcohol before going to the beach! Consuming alcohol on the beach is not only dangerous but it is against the law. Sunscreen: To avoid the most common beach injury, sunburn, apply sunscreen 30 minutes before beginning your day at the beach and reapply often. Storms: OCBP wants you to know that one of the most dangerous places to be during a thunderstorm is on the beach. At the first sign of approaching storm or warning from your SRT, you must leave the beach immediately and seek shelter.
Holes: A hole dug on the beach can suddenly collapse without warning causing a deadly emergency. Never dig any deeper than the knees of the smallest person near the hole. Shorebreak: Riding waves headfirst onto the beach or diving into shallow water can cause a serious neck injury. Always talk to your lifeguard about current conditions. Rip Currents: Rip Currents are the biggest hazard to ocean swimmers. Swim parallel to the shore to escape from a rip current. Consult the closest lifeguard about rip current activity and the best place to swim. Lost Children: Introduce your child to the lifeguard when you first arrive. If you become separated, both parent and child should immediately go to the nearest lifeguard tower. This is the most time- efficient way to reunite lost individuals. Hot Sand: Bring some type of shoe when going to the beach. Sand can get hot enough to burn your feet. The bottom of a child’s foot is far tenderer than those of an adult. Water: Bring lots of water when going to the beach. Thirst is not a good indicator for your body’s need for water. Encourage children to drink water. Heat Illness: Beach Patrons should stay hydrated and avoid overexertion to prevent heat illness. Landmarks of Ocean City and Delaware Beaches

Wave Riding
From Professional Wave Rider Brian Stoehr Quick Tips To Have More Fun And Stay Even Safer In The Ocean
T
he most important thing you need to develop if you intend to spend more time riding waves, is a healthy respect for the ocean. My comfort and respect level is what has kept me safe throughout my career as a professional wave rider. So whats my advice? Educate yourself about the ocean and your surroundings! Educate and develop your own respect of the ocean. Do this and you will minimize a lot of risk that goes along with not only wave riding sports, but all your beach enjoyment. Begin to understand how the currents work, how the waves work and you seamlessly begin the process of developing that respect factor which can define your limits in the water. One of the greatest things about wave riding sports is you never master the craft. The ocean and waves are ever changing and that means you never learn everything. Let’s start with some basic safety information that holds true for all levels. Always be aware of the currents that exist in the ocean. There are two main types of currents you want to understand to both stay safe and utilize while riding waves. The first is the long shore current, which is wind created and makes you drift up and down the beach. My best tip with the long shore current is to pick out a fixed landmark on the beach (hotel buildings are ideal as you can see them from far distance) and pay attention to that mark while in the water.

Once you notice that you are down shore, simply hop out and walk back up the beach. The second is the infamous rip currents. As a wave rider, these are something to be fully aware of, as they are something you to know how to escape. Remember, the worst part about this current is your own fear. The rip current is an outward pushing current that makes it hard to swim directly back to the beach. The most important thing is not panic and swim parallel to the beach. Once you swim 10-20 feet parallel to the beach, that current will release you and make it easy to swim back to the beach. Remembering this will allow you to enjoy the ocean while minimizing your risk of getting in trouble in the water. Another common rule of thumb that will drastic help wave riders of all skill levels is understanding that waves break in water about half as deep as the wave is tall. Why is this important? We all ride waves in shallow water. It’s just the physics of how a wave breaks. If you understand that fact, your common sense kicks in when falling off any type of board. If you are conscious of the fact that there is not 10 feet of water under you when riding waves, you will be cautious of how you are exiting your wave or board. Surfing is a way of life and a culture within itself... Surfing is defined as the art of riding waves and we do it for FUN! To me, the best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun.

All of our sauces, salsas, dressings etc are meticulously house-made. We hand-patty our burgers from a blend of chuck, brisket and short-rib. Pocomoke City
Maryland’s Friendliest Town on the Eastern Shore
A
‘Living Museum,’ a charming downtown, and Cypress Swamp Adventures make Pocomoke worth discovering. Waving a welcome to visitors and residents, a huge American flag flutters high above this charming lower Eastern Shore town. And lately, there’s enough going on—a new discovery center, a refurbished theater. There’s more than ever here to delight families and travelers of all ages.
The Place to Start: The Delmarva Discovery Center The newest addition to Pocomoke, dubbed “the friendliest town on the Eastern Shore,” is the Delmarva Discovery Center. This living museum has a prime spot just a few feet away from the Pocomoke River and the town’s picture-perfect drawbridge. Stow your car here and spend the day exploring Pocomoke by foot. Inside the center, you’re far more than a spectator. Go ahead and touch, listen, experiment and explore. It’s a hands-on experience that offers a fun and fascinating look at the Pocomoke River, its history, ecology and role in the lives of folks in this region for the past 300 years. Explore a Native American exhibit, a beaver dam big enough for the kids to climb into, climb aboard a re-creation of a steamboat, feel what it’s like to tong for oysters or hoist full-size sails in a gale-force wind and coming this summer is a brand new live otter exhibit. It’s truly an adventure in learning.
Nature and Recreation Stroll the town docks for views of sailboats and powerboats. A stone’s throw from the bridge is Cypress Park with picnic tables, a playground and tennis courts. Stretch your legs on the four-mile
nature trail that meanders through swamp and woods along the river’s edge. Boaters can tie up at the Pocomoke town docks for free the first two days (just call or stop by City Hall at 410-957-1333, 101 Clarke Street). Golfers can head to Winter Quarters Municipal Golf Course, a nine-hole, par 70 course on the banks of the Pocomoke, close to downtown.
Downtown History and Culture Originally settled in the 1600s, the town has several homes on the National Register. Take a tour of the stately Costen House and Rose Garden, home to the town’s first mayor. A few blocks away, the Sturgis One Room School Museum offers a different perspective on history. Built more than a century ago, the school served African-American students in grades one through seven until 1937. One of the newest jewels downtown is the MarVa Theater, an Art Deco beauty from 1927 that was renovated and reopened in 2008. The Mar-Va now offers movies for $5, theatrical productions, concerts, and more. Afterward relax on the outside deck for some great riverside dining.

The coast of Delaware is known for beautiful beaches, but many travelers visit to learn about the rich heritage that dates back to pre-colonial times. The Indian River Life Saving Station, built in 1876, was constructed to assist ships in need along the coastlines of the United States and is now home to a museum, gift shop and event venue. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public for tours. On Coastal Highway from Fenwick Island to Bethany Beach, you may see the large concrete towers along the coastline. In the early 1940’s the United States military set up Fort Miles at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to protect the city of Philadelphia during WWII. The fort took over 1,500 acres of land. Of the eleven towers constructed, eight were located in Delaware. From the top of the towers, “spotters” could scan approximately 14 miles out to sea in search of enemy vessels and direct the firing of guns mounted along the coastline.
Fenwick Island Fenwick Island boasts a beautiful, wide coastline and small beach town atmosphere that attracts thousands each year. Fenwick Island is home to one of only a handful of lighthouses located in Sussex County. You’ll find bayside on 146th St., a section of roadway that coincidentally serves as the state line dividing Maryland and Delaware. The lighthouse is now a museum and is being maintained by the New Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. The Discover Sea Shipwreck Museum, located on the second floor of Sea Shell City (one of Fenwick Island’s original shops) on Coastal Hwy, is another must-see attraction. The museum was founded with the goal of recovering and preserving our maritime heritage. The museum opened in 1995 and is one of the largest of its kind in the MidAtlantic. An ever-changing variety of exhibits offer visitors a collection of shipwreck and recovered artifacts of both regional and worldwide sites, with plenty of reasons to keep coming back. Traveling on Coastal Highway, don’t miss the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce’s Information Center, located just south of the Fenwick Island State Park. The Information Center is your one stop shop for everything you will need during your visit. Whether you are planning a local event, looking for something fun to do, or thinking
about relocation, the Center has all the information you will need. Tourism Coordinators are available to assist you Monday-Friday 9 am-5 pm and SaturdaySunday 9 am-3pm .
Bethany Beach Bethany is known for their quiet beaches, boardwalk, and quaint downtown shopping area with wonderful restaurants and attractions. During the summer season, family friendly entertainment can be enjoyed in the evenings at the bandstand. A Farmers Market is held at the corner of Pennsylvania Ave and Garfield Pkwy. on Sunday. Visitors to Bethany Beach entering on Garfield Parkway are greeted by the legendary totem pole, Chief Little Owl, standing over twenty feet high. Artist, Peter Wolf Toth donated the totem pole to the town as a part of his “Trail of Whispering Giants” project. As part of the project, at least one pole is located in each of the 50 states. The Bethany Beach History Museum is located within town hall, offering photos and brochures, since the town’s incorporation in 1901. Just a short walk West on Garfield Parkway is the Bethany Beach Nature Center and Conservation Area. The property hosts a native plant garden, walking trail, and children’s area. Inside, visitors can enjoy the interactive nature center. Landmarks of Ocean City and Delaware Beaches

family-friendly environment. After moving into the space in February of 2016, the brothers did most of the renovations on their own, from removing a center wall to making the restaurant more visible from the street and designing the bar. The menu, which John Fels describes as “all-American,” includes dishes such as jerk chicken wings, burgers, chicken sandwiches and wraps. The brothers designed the menu themselves, picking up on popular dishes throughout the years. Crab cakes, made with local lump and jumbo lump crabmeat, have been a top-selling item so far, he said. The brothers learned how to make crab cakes while growing up in Baltimore. The Southwest burger with pico de gallo, avocado and pepper jack cheese has also been popular, he said, as has the Crabby Burger topped with crab dip. The restaurant, also co-owned by Bill Wilson, currently serves a full menu 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 a.m., but in the summer months, the brothers hope to phase in a breakfast menu for the morning with things such as sandwiches, omelets and quiche. Just Pizza Bethany is also family owned and operated, serving appetizers, subs and the best NY style Pizza found in the state of Delaware! Take out or delivery, they will bring it to you anywhere in the Bethany Beach area. Open late during the summer season. Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach 302-226-BREW Dogfish.com Founder Sam Calagione calls Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach the soul of the company. When the doors opened in 1995, Sam brewed two or three 10-gallon batches a day on a glorified homebrew system, making Dogfish the smallest commercial brewery in the United States. Because the batches were small, Sam could afford
to indulge his off-centered whims. He’d wander into the brewpub’s kitchen and grab a handful of raisins, a cup of maple syrup or a scoop of roasted chicory. Next thing you know, Dogfish Head’s signature experimental style was born, and the brewpub became the home for “Original beer, original food and original music.” Today, you’ll find a wide selection of offcentered ales (including some from our inhouse experimental brewery that you won’t find anywhere else), small-batch spirits and a menu full of specialty pizzas, seafood entrees and yummy sandwiches. Open at noon, seven days a week, year-round. See you there!

Jakes Seafood House 29 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach 19178 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth Beach 302-227-6237 & 302-644-7711 Jakes has prided itself since 1988 in preparing fresh, quality seafood using old family recipes and, obviously, some twists on newer menu items. We pride ourselves in the fact that 95% of the food in our restaurant is homemade and prepared to order. We opened up with a philosophy of serving old Baltimore-style seafood using the best ingredients while trying to assure that our guests get a value for their dollar. The shrimp and scallops are handbreaded daily with our own breading that is made in–house. Our Maryland Crab Soup is a recipe that goes back to 1929 to my grandfather (Jake Schneider of the original
Jakes Seafood in Baltimore). The bisque is a rich, cream-based soup with scallops, shrimp, lobster, and crab: thick and rich. The Yellowfin Tuna and Rockfish came to us fresh from local vendors and usually the fish is caught in the mid-Atlantic area.

Delaware’s Quiet Resorts . . . Communities Honor Wounded Soldiers and their Families By Annette Reeping
A
s far back as the days of early settlers, Delaware’s beaches provided a haven of rest. Then as now, families come to the beach for its beauty, tranquility, ocean waves, and enjoy all the area has to offer. The heritage of the Quiet Resorts provided the inspiration for a grass-roots endeavor called Operation SEAs the Day (OSTD), which offers wounded soldiers and their families time at the beach to bond. The warrior families are referred to as Very Important Families (VIF’s). For injured warriors and their families and caregivers, the Bethany Beach area is the perfect setting to relax and enjoy time together easing their transition back into civilian life. The program, now in its fourth year, takes place during Warrior Week which begins the day after Labor Day. This year’s event is September 6 – 11. At the heart of the program is the desire to honor wounded veterans, their families and caregivers. The mission of Operation SEAs the Day is, “To organize and facilitate a beach week event for wounded soldiers and their families as a means of showing appreciation for their service and sacrifice. It is our hope that such a community based gesture of support will be comforting and help ease their transition back into civilian life.” OSTD volunteer staff works with military service organizations to obtain VIF referrals. How does it work? Local businesses donate goods, food, and activities to the warrior families. Local host families volunteer to assist the VIF’s when they arrive, and help them navigate the area to take advantage of the many activities available during the week. Contributing to its unparalleled success is the generosity of grateful local people. In 2013, Sea Colony, a private community of 2200 homes that borders Bethany Beach, asked owners to donate their homes to wounded veterans for this one week event. The positive response exceeded expectations. Today, surrounding Bethany Beach area owners join Sea Colony owners in providing homes to wounded warrior families. Sea Colony also makes its beach, fitness centers, Tennis

Center, Promenade and other amenities available to the warrior families. Along with the Bethany Beach Famers’ Market, Operation SEAs the Day merchandise is sold at the Sea Colony Beach Shoppe at the Marketplace. The local community and seasonal population actively engages to show patriots and their families their appreciation through personal communications, volunteering, p a r t i c i p at i n g in a Hero’s Welcome Parade, creating Quilts of Valor, making monetary donations, baking wonderful treats, offering complimentary meals from local restaurants and providing “on the house” events for the families during their visit. Operation SEAs the Day, which became a 501c(3) public charity in 2014, has a 100% volunteer staff, who along with its many supporters, hopes to set an example which other towns will duplicate throughout the United States. Is the event worthwhile? Among the many notes of appreciation sent from warrior families, one said, “I wanted to take a moment to express our profound thanks and deepest gratitude… for such a meaningful and life changing experience. Thank you for your honor and actions. Thank you for opening your hearts, homes, and lives to us and for showing us what it is that we have so willingly sacrificed for…. Finally thank you for providing significant attention to the families of the veterans.”
