Chesapeake Boating
Sailing into the Annapolis sunset aboard the 74-foot schooner “Woodwind”
Raise the sails, steer the boat or just sit back and relax! Sail the Chesapeake Bay on one of the two, 74-foot wooden schooners that offer a real Chesapeake Bay sailing experience, Woodwind and Woodwind II. Buy a ticket on one of the 2-hour public cruises or privately book the boat (s) out for a special event. Each trip aboard the Woodwinds is unique. All cruises sail past the US Naval Academy, gorgeous waterfront homes and the historic city skyline while heading into the Chesapeake Bay. When the wind conditions are spectacular, a trip to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge or the Thomas Point Lighthouse might be in the captain’s itinerary. The breathtaking sunsets over the city skyline are a must see. What better way to experience ‘America’s Sailing Capital’ than by taking a cruise aboard on a beautiful schooner (two masted sailing ship). Let the Captain and Crew make your trip especially memorable- they will invite you to help raise the sails (all 4 of them), steer the boat or simply sit back and relax with a cold beverage. Their cash bar is filled with a selection of wines and nice local craft brews; we even have bottles of Bubbly for special occasions.
During the weeknights, there are themed public sunset cruises like, History Mondays, Beer Tasting Tuesdays, Wednesday Night Match Racing, and Thursday Local Music Cruises. Tickets for 2 hour public cruises can be purchased up to 6 days in advance of the sailing date. Have a group of 18 or more? Purchase tickets in advance of those 6 days, by calling their sales team to arrange that for you. Throughout the season there are fun, themed specialty cruises; sail away and raise your glass on a “Wine in the Wind” cruise, learn about “Lighthouses on the Chesapeake”, indulge with a dinner cruise featuring local foods and drinks, and the popular fireworks cruise on Independence Day. Tickets for these events go on sale in the beginning of the year with menus displayed online. The Woodwind and Woodwind II offer privately chartered events as well. Fun, team match racing, corporate outings, crab feasts and catered sunset sails. Sailing is a great way to celebrate birthdays, reunions and a wedding weekend. The delicious catering menu that can be ordered for any private event
will please all of your guests. Ever dream of sleeping aboard a boat? On Saturday nights, the Woodwind Boat & Breakfast package includes a two hour sunset sail, accommodations aboard and then breakfast in the morning overlooking Annapolis Harbor. Boat & Breakfast packages are offered May through September. Whether you privately charter one of our schooners, sail with us on a specialty Wine in the Wind cruise or come out on a public 2-hour tour, there is no better way to experience Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay that on the Schooners Woodwind and Woodwind II. The Chesapeake Bay. The largest, natural estuary in the US. Home to the Blue Crab, the Chesapeake Oyster, Skipjacks, Deadrises and so much more. With its combination of historic charm and cosmopolitan culture, the cities and towns of this region provide the joys of small-town living with access to larger metropolitan areas. A popular weekend destination, the Chesapeake Bay has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years. Both on the Western Shore and across the Bay Bridge on the Eastern Shore, many have made this area home. The Chesapeake Bay, with over 5,600 miles of shoreline, 46 principal rivers and countless creeks, offers enjoyment both on and off the water. Not for boaters only, birders, hunters, hikers and more soak up the natural beauty that surrounds the Bay. There are county parks, state parks, and national parks that offer access and education to locals and visitors alike. The opportunities to get out and enjoy the Bay are plentiful! Annapolis, one-time capital to these United States, has served as the State’s capital city since 1695. Home to the U.S.

Naval Academy and St. John’s College, the city of almost 40,000 has been a center of political activity and intellectual gatherings over the years. Considered the “Sailing Capital of the U.S.,” Annapolis teems with boats, both of the sail and power varieties. Recently chosen as the home port for the National Sailing Hall of Fame and Museum, Annapolis’ reputation as a sailor’s paradise is world renown. Boating activities take center stage with sailing regattas, powerboat cruises, watermen crabbing, kayaking and even stand-up board paddlers. The water is a way of life in and around Annapolis. The southern counties on Maryland’s Western Shore have their own charm and historic influence. The sleepy community of Solomon’s Island at the mouth of the Patuxent River comes alive with boating activity and stays active year-round with the Patuxent Naval Station right across the River. Just around the corner on the Potomac River is the southernmost part of St. Mary’s County, recently highlighted in the Captain John Smith Historic Chesapeake Trail. Up the Bay-side you’ll find the old fashioned charm of Chesapeake Beach or the marina-loaded

Herring Bay area with working boats, pleasure boats and active boatyards. Both of these areas serve as recreational venues to the Washington D.C. area as well as housing some of that city’s workers.
Just across the Bay Bridge from Annapolis is Queen Anne’s County and the bustling Kent Island area. Queen Anne’s has also seen much growth over the past few years with new communities springing up and down the waterfront.
The BWI Corridor, the area surrounding the Baltimore/ Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, is one of the fastest growing areas in Anne Arundel County. The enhancements of businesses and organizations supporting the Homeland Security initiatives have fueled growth in both the business and housing sectors. In additional to burgeoning hotels and restaurants, new housing is being built to support the expanding Ft. Meade area.
From there you can travel north to Chestertown or south to Talbot County. Talbot County includes the quaint, and sometimes famous, area of St. Michaels, as well as the busy Easton area with its many shops, restaurants and historic areas.
Maryland’s Eastern Shore is a unique place in so many ways. Geographically, it is separated from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay all the way from Havre de Grace in the northern part, to Crisfield in the southernmost part of Maryland. Small towns and communities are the hallmark of Shore life with farmland and watermen’s dockages filling in the vast spaces in-between.
And just a bit further south, you’ll find Cambridge, on the shores of the Choptank River. With a variety of old timers and new comers, Cambridge retains that small town feel with touches of a more populous city. Education. Politics. Tourism. Government. Culture. History. All are prevalent in and around the Chesapeake Bay region. But in the center of it all is the Bay itself with a unique blend of small-town atmosphere and that cosmopolitan flavor. The richness of the past blends with the joy of the present leading to warm future prospects. The Chesapeake Bay is a place we call “home.” Landmarks Landmarksofofthe theChesapeake ChesapeakeBay Bay

A Quick History
A Glimpse of the Past Visitors to Annapolis and Anne Arundel County quickly become immersed in the region’s rich history.
A
nne Arundel County was established in 1650, one year after Europeans first settled in the area. The early colonists produced tobacco on lands washed by Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. In 1694, Governor Francis Nicholson and the General Assembly decided to move Maryland’s capital from St. Mary’s City to a small port village just south of the Severn River. The next year, Nicholson and his Council renamed the government’s new home “Annapolis,” or “Anne’s city,” to honor England’s future Queen Anne. Nicholson designed the baroque street plan that still marks Annapolis as a city of the 17th century. Today’s visitors strolling through the web of streets that encircle and converge on the State House and St. Anne’s Church share the experience with their colonial predecessors. Annapolis began to prosper in the 18th century. Maritime tradesmen worked along the waterfront, craftspeople made and sold goods at their shops, and merchants advertised imported products drawn from Britain’s worldwide trade network. Visitors attending to government business found lodging, food, drink, and entertainment at a number of taverns. Theater performances, horse races, dinners, card parties, and balls attracted elite travelers such as George Washington, who recorded his expenses while making the busy social rounds. Some well-to-do families built Georgian townhouses so they could take advantage of the city’s Golden Age offerings year-round. These architectural masterpieces still offer glimpses into the lives of Annapolis’s colonial elite to modern guests.

Landmarks of the Chesapeake Bay
Annapolis patriots led Maryland’s push toward revolution in the 1760s and 1770s. The city had its own protests against British taxes, its own Liberty Tree, and its own tea party. Three of Maryland’s signers of the Declaration of Independence William Paca, Samuel Chase, and Charles Carroll of Carrollton - lived in Annapolis in 1776, and the fourth - Thomas Stone - resided there in the 1780s. Annapolis is the only place in the country that boasts surviving houses of all of its state’s Signers. The city’s maritime connections made it an important hub for gathering and shipping troops and supplies during the Revolutionary War. At the end of the conflict, Washington returned to Annapolis - this time as commander-in-chief of American forces, not merely a horse fancier - to resign his general’s commission before Congress, which was then meeting in the State House. The building’s Old Senate Chamber has been faithfully restored to its appearance on that historic occasion in 1783. Baltimore outstripped Annapolis as Maryland’s leading commercial center by 1800, and the state capital contented itself with its lesser role as a market town for Anne Arundel County. The pace of business picked up a bit when new 19th-century travel technologies — steamboats and railroads — allowed for closer ties between the city and county and their thriving neighbors to the north and west — Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Today, each can be reached by highway in an hour or less from downtown Annapolis, making the city the perfect place to base one’s exploration of the national capital region.
Since 1845, when Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft converted a defunct Army fort into a training school for naval cadets or midshipmen, Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy have sometimes been interpreted as synonymous terms. The Academy’s location, where the Severn River meets Chesapeake Bay, made it an ideal site for practical drills in ship handling, gunnery, and other nautical skills. It also made the campus a key position that had to be secured by Federal troops when the Civil War erupted. Union forces occupied the installation to prevent the Maryland legislature from voting for secession in 1861, and military hospitals established on the Academy and neighboring St. John’s College treated northern casualties. Today, despite — or perhaps because of! — the different approaches of their renowned educational programs and the dissimilar popular images of their gifted students, the two schools renew the theme of historic conflict in an annual spring croquet match with city bragging rights at stake. The redesign and rebuilding of the Naval Academy, begun in the 1890s, spurred expansion and modernization of its host city as well. New houses, paved streets, telephone lines, utility services, and electric trains were signs of the times in Annapolis around the turn of the 20th century. Meanwhile, northern Anne Arundel County farms supplied Baltimore and other cities along its transportation routes with fresh produce, and south county farmers continued growing tobacco, the crop that had been the lifeblood of the area’s economy for centuries. Travelers to the county still find it a region of surprising diversity, where the timeless rhythms of land and tide flow beneath the faster pace of modern life. Annapolis stood at a crossroads in the early 1950s. After enduring the trials of the Depression and World War II, residents had to decide how to harness post-war prosperity for the good of the historic city, which was clearly showing the signs of its two-and-one-half centuries of life. Demolition and redevelopment were one option, but many Annapolitans believed that the town could best face the future by valuing its past. Since its inception, Annapolis’s historic preservation movement has protected hundreds of buildings in a city recognized as a National Historic Landmark and National Register District. Today’s visitors experience the unique historic character and charm of a city enjoying its second Golden Age.

Things to See & Do
B
efore the Revolutionary War, during its golden age, Annapolis was dubbed “The Athens of America” for its glittering social life, abundance of cultural arts and events, and high fashion. Now, vibrantly alive after three and a half centuries, Annapolis has a long and illustrious history to explore. Founded in 1649 by a group of Virginia Puritans in search of religious tolerance, Anne Arundel Town became the capital city of colonial Maryland in 1695 and was renamed Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne, heiress to the English throne. During the 18th century, Annapolis flourished as a mature center of commerce, culture, and politics. The Maryland State House, built between 1772 and 1779, is the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use and is a National Historic Landmark. The State House served as the new nation’s first peacetime capitol between November of 1783 and August of 1784. Today, you can visit the original Old Senate Chamber, which hosted two extraordinary events in U.S. history: General George Washington’s resignation of his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, followed three weeks later by the ratification of the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the war with Great Britain and signaling the recognition of the new nation. Anne Arundel County gets its unusual name from Lady Anne of Arundel, the wife of Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore and the man who owned the charter and land grant for the State of Maryland. Although she and her husband never made the trip across the Atlantic, the voyage carrying her brother-in-law and other Catholic colonists was planned in her living room in Tisbury, England. A visit to this destination is incomplete without a trip out on the water, as the area offers a significant maritime history. Just south of Annapolis you will find the quaint waterside villages of Galesville, Deale, Rosehaven, and Shady Side. Here, workboats still bring home the bounty of the Bay, and the small-town atmosphere is relaxing compared to the relative hustle of Annapolis.
Tours and Attractions Downtown Annapolis has many historical sites to explore. Tours are available for many of the sites; others offer information for passers-by. Two notable attractions in Annapolis are the United States Naval Academy and St. John’s College. The U.S. Naval

Academy is a National Historic Landmark, founded in 1845 when 50 midshipmen were in attendance. Now, with a brigade of 4,000 midshipmen, the Academy is not only an institute of higher learning but also an attraction to visitors from around the world. Tours and information on the Academy are available at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center on “the yard.” Just remember, you can’t drive into the Academy, but walk-ins are more than welcome! St. John’s College, the third oldest college in the nation, includes among its illustrious alumni Francis Scott Key, author of The Star- Spangled Banner. This “Great Books” school served as a military hospital during the Civil War. The new History Quest at the St. Clair Wright Center on Main Street in Annapolis will give you a perspective on the development and history of Annapolis before embarking on one of the many walking tours of the city. This renovated and restored building, circa 1745, unearthed many artifacts and stories during its renewal and is a good starting place for your historical explorations.

This structure is unique in that it was originally built as an inn and has remained one through the years. In the 1780’s, it was known as the King of France Tavern. (#17 on Historic Annapolis Map)
McDowell Hall Construction began on a house for the colonial governor Thomas Bladen. When the legislature refused to vote more funds for completion, the empty shell became known as “Bladen’s Folly”. Given to St. John’s College in 1784, it became the first classroom building when the college opened in 1789 and is named for St. John’s first president. (See #18 on Historic Annapolis Map) Naval Academy Chapel The 1904 Chapel designed by noted architect, Ernest Flagg, is located on the highest point of ground within the yard. The window behind the altar and several others were personally designed by the Louis Comfort Tiffany. (#19 on Historic Annapolis Map) Ogle Hall/Alumni House Ogle Hall, built between 1735 and 1739, takes its name from the Ogle family, who lived here from 1747 to 1815. Historic Annapolis Tours now uses this building as a tour office. (#22 on Historic Annapolis Map) Preble Hall The Naval Academy Museum, completed in 1939, contains some 50,000 items related to the history of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Naval Academy. Its holdings include superb collections of ship models, maritime paintings, and John Paul Jones’ memorabilia. (#23 on Historic Annapolis Map) Shiplap House One of the oldest surviving houses in Annapolis, the Shiplap house, c.1715, was probably built by its first occupant, Edward Smith. Smith ran an ordinary tavern (or inn) in the house. Noted Maryland artist of the late nineteenth century, Francis Blackwell, also lived here. The house features exhibits and the Historic Annapolis Foundation Museum Shop. (#26 on Historic Annapolis Map) St. Anne’s Church The present church, built in Romanesque-Revival style, is the third to stand on this site. Construction began in 1859, using some of the walls still standing after the second church burned down in 1858. (#24 on Historic Annapolis Map) St. Mary’s Church The present church, a Victorian-Gothic structure,
was consecrated in 1860. The interior displays the rib-vaulting and hand carved altar screen typical of the Gothic-Revival style. (# 22 on Historic Annapolis Map) State House Maryland’s Capital building, built in 1772, is the oldest state house in the U.S. in continuous legislative use. In December, 1783, George Washington resigned his commission as commander and chief of the continental army, and a few weeks later, the Treaty of Paris was ratified there. (#27 on Historic Annapolis Map) William Paca Gardens Described in 1778 as “extremely elegant,” the terraced gardens had been filled in and Carvel Hall built on the upper terraces in 1906. aficionados may prefer a deep tissue massage to work out specific areas of muscle tension or a reflexology treatment which can address problem areas in the entire body from working out corresponding points on the feet. A Deep Tissue massage is a great way to work out those sore muscles after a day’s golf outing. Couples massage has become a very popular spa service. It allows you to share the pampering experience of a relaxation massage with that someone special. Facials are a wonderful spa service designed to keep you looking your best. They offer a non-invasive anti-aging treatment opportunity for those who are looking for a more natural way to combat premature aging. Facials can be customized to address a variety of skin care concerns including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and rosacea just to name a few. Facials are divinely relaxing and a great way to keep your skin looking fantastic. Microdermabrasian and LED Light Therapy are some additional anti-aging skin care services that many spas offer. More aggressive skin care treatments can be found at day spas that provide medical aesthetic services such as Laser treatments and Botox. Body treatments are skin care services that provide rejuvenation from head to toe. Detoxifying body wraps and exfoliating body scrubs will leave your whole body amazingly soft, smooth, and energized. Although fun in the sun is part of any great beach vacation, too much sun can lead to premature aging and major health concerns. Spray tanning has become a popular alternative with health conscious spa goers. Spray tan services can help you achieve a healthy beach glow without submitting yourself to the sun’s damaging rays. Spa manicures and Pedicures are an experience in indulgence with special pampering for hands and feet. A trip to the spa may be just what you are looking for on your next visit to the Annapolis area. The Landmarks History...
Company founder, Ron Szpatura, contributed his efforts to the development of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Visitors Bureau. The Visitors Bureau and local hoteliers both felt the need for a quality, in room, publication to orient their visitors to what was available in the area. Ron fulfilled this need by launching the first edition of Landmarks of Annapolis, which was distributed to all ten hotels in the area.

With 274 Years of continuous operation, makes them the 2nd oldest Tavern in the United States. In 1740 the tavern was open by Elizabeth Bennett and in 1750 it was sold to Horatio Middleton. Middleton operated a ferry that took people to the Eastern Shore The law required ferry owners to have lodging for travelers. The Middleton became an Inn for seafaring men. The ferry cut hours off the trip from Philadelphia to Northern Virginia so George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and many of the leaders of the American Revolution were frequent patrons of the Inn and Tavern. The Tavern became a gathering place and social center for Annapolis. Middleton had many owners and went through many changes until it was purchased by Jerry Hardesty in 1968. The new ownership created an almost museum type atmosphere to be enjoyed when you visit the 2nd oldest tavern in the Country. In the oyster bar, you can feast on the fresh oysters, shrimp, fish, crabs and other seafood delicacies served raw or prepared anyway you would like. Also displayed is the great seal of Maryland with the Ploughman and fishermen as representatives of the state. They symbolize the two industries that made Maryland such a valuable source of trade.

The city’s current Market house is the eighth identified in the evolution of Annapolis. In 1683, an act was passed by the General Assembly providing for “one giant market”.The city built an actual Market House near the intersection of State circle and Northeast street in 1717. Several moves took place but in 1784, eight local businessmen deeded Market Space to the City under one condition,a market house had to be built on that site. This became the permanent home of where the Market House sits today. in the 1800’s the Market house became the center of the economy it is was legislated that goods could only be sold at the Market House. Everyday was a Market Day except Sunday. Over the years there have been progressions from a fish market, grocery store and it actually escaped destruction by legislators because of local support. The History of the Market House has so many twists and turns that there have been entire books written about it. In 2014 the, after years of neglect, misuse and no use, the Market House lease was awarded half to the Blonder family, one of Annapolis most successful business owners. and half to other local entrepreneurs. Take a tour and you can see the upgrades that have been made with the first class food stalls, inside and outside seating and a destination well worth what its rich history deserves.

113 Main street has been a part of this history and has seen over 200 years of Annapolis’ evolution. Built in 1774 as the Rose & Crown, this tavern was a local gathering spot for both Royalists and Revolutionaries. By 1836, it tuned into Sam’s Café, the only dining and dancing establishment in downtown Annapolis. This was Annapolis’ Golden age. A waterside Tavern served as a portside communications network long before there was an internet. Sam’s Café became the meeting place for merchants, sailors and locals alike. Discussing trade, politics and enjoying entertainment, it was the social centerpiece in downtown Annapolis. The 70’s brought Fran O’Brien’s, named for the owner who played for the Redskins as a defensive lineman. The steak and seafood menu became a favorite amongst the legislators and politicians, a distinction it still enjoys. Jerry Hardesty purchased and changed it to Fran O’Brien’s Oyster Bar He brought back the emphasis on Chesapeake Cuisine and Annapolis Hospitality. The décor pays homage to the sports heroes of the Naval Academy as well as the history of Annapolis. The storage rooms where liquor and other such items are now stored, used to be tiny bedrooms. Now of course the trade is in food and in fun. Whatever the century or decade, O’Brien’s at 113 Main Street Annapolis is the place to be in Downtown. With live entertainment nightly and a great menu.

The story of Phillips Seafood is an intriguing American tale of humble beginnings, hard work and the courage to take risks to achieve one’s vision. Brice and Shirley Phillips grew up on Hoopers Island, a small community off Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay where most residents worked on the water. In their early married life, they managed Brice’s father’s seafood packing plant, which sourced wild crabs, fish and oysters. In those early days, the fresh seafood traveled by steamship to Baltimore. Faced with surplus crabs one season, Brice and Shirley decided to open a simple “crab shack” in Ocean City, MD with a $2,000 loan from their families. What began as a one-room carryout in 1956 grew over the years until it seated 1,400 guests. Business grew from there, as the family expanded into new locations. From the very beginning, the Phillips family has focused on bringing the culinary traditions and welcoming hospitality of the Eastern Shore to their guests. They know there is no replicating authenticity. That’s why many of their recipes are generations old, passed to their chefs straight from the kitchen of Shirley Phillips. After 100 years, Phillips Seafood remains family-owned and family-operated. Just as Brice and Shirley passed down their dedication to their business to sons Steve and Jeff, so has the third generation become an integral part of the company’s future, fulfilling a wide variety of roles at Phillips.

In 1906, a boy of 14 ventured from Arna, a village in Sparta, Greece, to America with one suit of clothes and enough money ($57) to cover fair, food and the immigration law. He settled with Greek friends in Brooklyn, N.Y., earned $15, enough to buy a pushcart. Thus began the humble beginnings of a career in the food business, as the young boy pushed his cart through the streets of Rockaway, N.Y., selling peanuts and popcorn. He came to Annapolis to meet and wed Cecelia Mandris, Sam Lewnes and his brother, John opened two dining places In 1921, Sam bought a business in Eastport, (a subdivision of Annapolis) from his brother-in-law Nick Mandris, and opened Sam’s Corner. Then, in 1947, George and his brother Lou, took over Sam’s Corner and named it Lewnes’ Bar & Grill. George and Helen’s two sons, Spiro and Charlie, eventually joined their parents in the family business, and by 1966 added a lounge. More renovation followed in 1975 with the expansion of the kitchen and dining facilities. With the addition of Greek Cuisine to the menu, the Lewnes’ family renamed their restaurant Spiro’s. With the passing of Sam in 1981, and George in 1983, the family sold the business. With the restaurant business still in his blood, Charlie and his wife Pam, and sons Sam and Mack, ventured back to Fourth Street, and bought the restaurant from their Uncle Louie. In 1989, after extensive remodeling, Sam’s Corner reopened in honor of Sam Lewnes, the man who 83 years earlier had started it all. Today the locals consider it the Premiere Steak House in Annapolis

In 1919 F. Marion Lazenby had a goal to bring pasteurized milk to Annapolis. Mr. Lazenby bought a failing dairy on the land where the Loews Annapolis Hotel currently is located. The of name of the dairy was the Annapolis Creamery Company, to locals it was the Annapolis Dairy. Mr. Lazenby also is the inventor of the signature curvy neck bottle synonymous with pasteurized milk. A sample of these original milk bottles, a complete story of the dairy, are available in the lobby curio case. The Annapolis Dairy supplied its products to the Navy Academy even though the Academy had a dairy. The Dairy provided ice cream to the Midshipmen who consumed 300 gallons of ice cream per week in 1938. The Annapolis Dairy included an ice cream stand featuring the famous ice cream treat the Eskimo Pie. A compassionate employer and entrepreneur Mr. Lazenby founded Annapolis Utilities to keep his staff employed during winter months. Annapolis Utilities, now the site of our three story meeting space, known as Loews Annapolis PowerHouse, (located across the hotel’s courtyard) sold various types of fuels and eventually sold LaSalle and Cadillac automobiles. In the mid-40’s the dairy and plant closed. The Utility Plant eventually became the Baltimore and Annapolis Bus Terminal. It was reconstructed as the Annapolis Hotel in 1988 and later purchased by Loews Hotel. The 200 plus room Hotel and Conference Center has distinguished itself with great service and has become one of the top Hotels in the Bay area.

The Chart House concept was born on Independence Day in 1961, the brainchild of famed Hawaiian surfer Joey Cabell and U.S. Navy man Buzzy Bent. The first location was modest, with just a few tables in a converted diner in Aspen, Colorado. However, two principles present in 1961 remain staples of every Chart House location – great food and equally impressive views. Chart House continues to dominate the list of the 100 restaurants with the most scenic views for the fifth year in a row. Today, Chart House restaurants overlook the coasts of both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and other scenic locations in between. And while we stretch from sea to shining sea, every location remains committed and specialized to its local community. Whether you choose to dine at our beautifully-remodeled Annapolis location overlooking the glimmering harbor, 750 feet above San Antonio in the Tower of the Americas or at the Weehawken location with breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, you can’t go wrong with the signature fish specialties, slow-roasted prime rib and delicious salads. The original Hot Lava Chocolate Cake is the perfect end to a memorable dining experience at Chart House. The Chart House legend – more than 50 years in the making.

Watermark, originally Chesapeake Marine Tours, began by offering a single sightseeing cruise to St. Michaels aboard the Annapolitan in 1972. Founder Ed Hartman, an attorney by trade, had a love of boating and a desire to invest in the local community. Today, in its second generation of family ownership with Hartman’s daughter Debbie Gosselin at the helm, the company has become a part of the canvas of Annapolis. Harbor Queen has been a consistent icon on the Annapolis harbor and “Day on the Bay to St. Michaels” is a long-time favorite. Watermark’s Colonial dressed tour guides have led thousands of school children through the Maryland State House, the historic streets of Annapolis and the grounds of the United States Naval Academy. The same children step aboard Queen for a cruise – many of whom experience their first boat ride with Watermark – and perhaps some dancing along the harbor too. Couples have said “I do” on Catherine Marie and crabs have been cracked on the top deck of Lady Sarah numerous times…all while cruising the Severn River. Watermark’s Water Taxi lends to the charm and unique experience of Annapolis. As Watermark celebrates its 42nd year, the company continues to grow in Annapolis and Baltimore. No other place than Watermark can you meet Francis Scott Key, watch the Blue Angels fly from the water, host a corporate outing on a yacht, cruise the waters of Baltimore at night and walk with a Colonial.

In 1942, a small Waterman’s bar opened on a winding road outside of Annapolis.. 32 Years later, Jimmy and Linda Cantler bought the business and building and changed the name to Cantler’s Riverside Inn. Jimmy involved six of his sixteen brothers and sisters in the operation. The family business developed a reputation as a local hangout and became attractive to the growing visitor population because of the freshness and quality of the seafood. In 1994 Dan Donnelly came aboard to manage the 52 year old “local bar and restaurant”. Dan maintained the old time charm and quality of the food and Cantler’s blossomed into the place to go for crabs and seafood in Annapolis. The Maryland tradition of spreading crabs over paper and smacking the claws with your wooden hammer while drinking a Naty Bo out of a can is alive and well here. Part of the charm is getting there, but with todays GPS technology you can allow your navigator to take you around the winding roads past the waterfront homes Dan has carefully preserved Cantler’s as a Waterman’s museum with the look and feel of a 72 year old bar and restaurant. It is the real Annapolis. The team of waiters that are exceptional and many have been there for decades. Its easy to feel right at home and if you get there early enough you get the great view of Mill Creek from the outside deck. This combination of atmosphere, friendly service and fresh food prepared the Maryland way has caught the eye of the Travel Channel, Food Network and tons of national press. Cantler’s is a historical gem, but it is also a must do Restaurant during anyone’s stay in the area.

In the late 60’s, Mike Ashford, a well-traveled aviator and connoisseur of local saloons, flew over Annapolis and said to himself, “This is where the best saloon on the planet should go!” Ashford was an Air Force trained pilot that had moved into a career as a commercial pilot. He had traveled the world and he knew exactly what he was looking for. In 1975, McGarvey`s had its beginnings in the downtown waterfront area which at the time was not so desirable. Menu items such as burgers and oysters that became famous, as well as Ashford’s own Aviator lager, created a local patronage.. With Ashford’s Air Force background, he has a great affinity for all branches of the military. The number of marriage plaques that are displayed showing the Annapolis’ married couples that met at McGarvey’s is very long and something the owners are very proud of. Over the years the word spread and you could find the Navy’s Blue Angels and celebrities, like Walter Cronkite stopping in, after enjoying their flying or sailing on the Bay on any given night. A stop at McGarvey’s became a ‘must do’ when visiting Annapolis.Oysters, clams, crab cakes, burgers, craft beers and other specials are offered almost every night and continue to keep one of Annapolis’ oldest and most popular saloons very busy. It is like dining in a historical museum as you view the many articles and pictures posted on the wall giving you a glimpse of the rich history. A trip to Annapolis without dining at McGarvey’s is not complete. Be sure and make one of Annapolis’ oldest and most famous saloons a part of your stay.

Joseph Jacobs thought it would be a great idea to compliment his work as a local Attorney by being a silent partner in what was to be only the fifth restaurant in the Eastport Area of Annapolis. Some things changed very quickly and his silent partnership became a little more active but fortunately there was Richard McClure to take over as the operational head of the restaurant and remains the current General Manager to this day. The name Carrol’s Creek interestingly enough came from an obscure 1776 map that misnamed Spa Creek as Carrol’s Creek. They also misspelled the name of the signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll. Joseph’s son Jeff worked every summer in the restaurant while in school and when he graduated in 1991 Jeff became the operational owner of the restaurant. In 2004, the management team invested over $1 Million in a major renovation to capitalize on easily one of the best views of Annapolis. The renovations opened up the dining area and created expandable banquet rooms that could facilitate 8 to 80 people and maintain that magnificent view. With continuous operation by the same management for 32 years, Carrol’s Creek has distinguished itself with exceptional food and quality service. For the last decade their Cream of Crab soup has won awards as the Best in Maryland. Not only one of Annapolis oldest businesses but one of the best run business.

Captain Bill Harris, with his wife Sis, started Harris Crab House in the summer of 1981 on the front dock of the W. H. Harris Seafood Processing House so his customers could sit and enjoy fresh seafood. The old processing house, which started business in December 1947, is still home to Harris Seafood Company, LLC, now under new ownership since 2004. W. H. Harris Seafood was one of over 20 oyster shucking houses in the area, and having withstood the test of time; remains the only operating oyster house open year round in Maryland. In 1991, Karen and Art Oertel with Jerry and Pat Harris opened the new Crab House with open air upstairs decks overlooking the moving picturesque waters of the Kent Narrows. With its open air decks, guests have a clear view of the old processing house, multitudes of waterfowl, sunset views, boats and the hardworking watermen that help in providing a safe and healthy seafood product. Over the years the restaurant has been filled with artifacts from the ever enduring seafood industry that is rich with a history of hard work and dedication. The goal was to capture the essence and heritage of the Eastern Shore. Visit Harris restaurant and enjoy fine seafood in a relaxed historic setting.

Over four decades ago, Ruth Fertel, a divorced mother of two, mortgaged her home for $22,000 to buy a small 60-seat restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana named Chris Steak House. Shortly thereafter, a fire forced her to change the original location and she renamed the restaurant, “Ruth’s Chris Steak House.” Despite her lack of restaurant experience, Ruth’s enthusiasm and determination made the restaurant a greater success than even she had anticipated. In 1977, at the urging of a loyal customer, Ruth granted her first franchise just outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our Sizzling Steak Concepts franchise began shortly thereafter in the mid 1980’s in Georgia. Featuring custom-aged, USDA prime steaks, served with the signature sizzle and legendary hospitality, all franchise owners are dedicated to honoring the vision and traditions set forth by Ruth’s Chris Steak House founder, Ruth Fertel. From its humble beginnings on Broad Street in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1965 to its current position as an internationally acclaimed restaurant, Ruth’s Chris welcomes steak enthusiasts at nearly 140 restaurants worldwide.

In 1984 Sam's Waterfront cafe opened its doors with the completion of Chesapeake Harbor. This upscale gated community was constructed by well know Annapolis developer Jerome Parks. He designed the restaurant to look exactly like a Chesapeake Bay lighthouse and originally named the Restaurant after his father, Sam. Several years later popular Washington restaurateur. Dominique brought his unique brand of dining to Annapolis and opened the very high end French dining establishment here. After his sudden death, Mary Randell took over the Restaurant and returned it to the original name. In 2005 Andrew Parks came in to take over the reigns of the operation. His daughter shared the same name as his grandfather, Sam, so the name stuck. Andrews passion for food and the excitement created with the outside waterfront dining has proven to be a winning formula for Sam's over the last ten years. The restaurant and Marina have hosted many notable celebrities including Astronaut and Congressman, John Glen, the football family of John Kent Cooke.

Buddy’s Crabs & ribs was established in June 1988 by owner Harvey Blonder and sons. Annapolis did not have a downtown crabhouse for visitors at that time. Upstairs there was a unique view of the harbour loaded with working boats that went out daily to bring home the crabs and fresh fish from the Chesapeake Bay. The vision of Buddy’s was to serve products that were unique to Annapolis, but not offered in downtown, crabs and ribs. The biggest challenge was not how to make great food or have great customer service, but how to get guests to walk up the stairs, see the view and enjoy the delicious food and great service!! Well, after 26 years, Buddy’s has done it, they have pleased thousands of customers, both local and from around the world, and has become a staple and a must go to when in Annapolis!! Right in the heart of Downtown.

The journey of the Mexican Café, from a very small Bay Ridge Road “Tijuana style” building to it’s present location in West Annapolis, began without margaritas!! The award winning Mexican Café’s signature margaritas were created a few years after it originally opened the doors for business over two decades ago. The Mexican Café is no stranger to dilemmas. From the early 1990’s, it has survived the split of a partnership, death of one of the original owners and the 2011 move to it’s current larger location on Melvin Avenue in West Annapolis with outdoor seating. Today the café offers a wide variety of Mexican and Tex Mex menu options from Oaxacan Chicken Mole to quesadillas, all made with fresh ingredients from scratch. Over decades the list of margarita options has expanded to include new signature versions of the original margarita such as the Orange Crush margarita with oranges crushed to order, the Especial, Sangrita and Jackarita to name a few. The Mexican Café has survived the test of time and offers a casual place to reflect, relax and enjoy your day.

ne of the most exciting aspects of your visit to the Chesapeake Bay will be deciding what and where to eat. This region has a true abundance of feasting choices, from the fine dining restaurant to the local pub, you have many options and truly tasty ones, at that! The most obvious local tasty treat is the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab. Whether served steamed, caked, or stuffed, it is a special pleasure. Long a staple of the local’s diet, the Blue Crab has become more of a delicacy in recent years. Regional efforts have shown to improve Crab numbers and it is, once

again, becoming the Chesapeake dinner delight. No matter where you are in the Chesapeake Bay region, seafood is the catch of the day. From rockfish to oysters, clams to flounder, the variety of Bay and Atlantic Ocean seafood is fabulous. There are traditional favorites but many chefs have explored the ways of the world and you will find everything from sushi–style to Maryland fried when it comes to preparation. Be not afraid of the choices—just dive right in and sample all the seafood bounty the Bay has to offer. Not feeling fishy? Not a problem! The area has plenty of
scrumptious samplings, from steak to vegetarian cuisine. And world-wide flavors have made their way to the shores of the Bay: Mexican, Japanese, Italian, French, Chinese, Mediterranean, even Indian! Sumptuous breakfasts and brunches, lazy lunches, delicious dinners are found all around the Bay region. With all the surrounding farms and farmer’s markets, fresh fruits and vegetables are another Bay bounty. There is a trend toward local and fresh in many restaurants. Spring brings lettuces, asparagus, peas and many other early greens. Everyone

waits for that first tasty tomato plucked off the local vine in summer along with sweet corn. The Bay region’s farms enjoy rich soil and a long growing season so all can enjoy the fruits, literally, of their labors. Peaches, apples, grapes and more are all seasonally available. Speaking of grapes, vineyards have begun sending their tendrils around the Bay—look for wine from a local winery to savor. One of the best things about Bay dining, in addition to the vast array of food choices, is the choice of atmosphere. The white linen, candlelight dinner one night may be followed by the flip-flop’s welcome outdoor picnic seating the
next. Soak up the sights and sounds of the area at the various outdoor-dining options. In almost any case, attire does not need to include a coat and tie; deck shoes and open collars are the dress code of the day almost year-round. No matter where you plan to dine, a quick call for reservations is not always required but is recommended. Whether you are in the heart of Annapolis, in Southern Maryland or enjoying the Eastern Shore, a wonderful culinary adventure awaits your dining pleasures!

Eastport Dining The Maritime neighborhood of Eastport is home to marinas and yacht clubs, historic inns and fantastic restaurants, both along “Restaurant Row” and hidden throughout the neighborhood. A short walk, drive, or water taxi ride from the city center of Historic Annapolis, Eastport provides a whole different variety of cuisine and ambiance choices in dining. Carrol’s Creek is a seafood restaurant that offers waterfront dining inside and on their expansive deck, with a picture perfect view of the entire Annapolis Harbor. Tucked away in the Annapolis City Marina, the restaurant’s new red paint job is an inviting Annapolis landmark that guides visitors across the bridge into Eastport. Since 1983, Carrol’s Creek has been serving fine food including steaks, chops, and of course, fresh local seafood. Their Sunday brunch is wildly popular and known as one of the best in town. Also featuring waterfront dining, the Chart House Restaurant is an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant known for its large bay windows that provide diners with a beautiful, scenic view of City Dock and the Annapolis harbor. The menu promises excellent steaks, seafood, and specialty desserts. Eastport can easily satisfy even the most devoted steak lovers with two great choices. Lewnes’ Steak House is a family operated restaurant with a long history in Annapolis. Locals love the prime steaks, impeccable wine selection, and elegant atmosphere that make Lewnes’ a popular romantic destination for special events. Serving up only the best choice beef since 1921, the Lewnes family is known for bringing that special touch to their restaurant that sets Lewnes’ apart. One block away is the Nationally acclaimed Ruth’s Chris. Their many locations around the globe have developed a reputationfor high quality and exceptional service. This gives you a choice between two of the highest rated Stakhouse’s in the state of Maryland. Surrounded by water, it is no surprise that Eastport is home to so many great seafood options. Blackwall Hitch, the latest Eastport $multimillion renovation located on the corner of Severn Ave and Sixth Street, offers ‘casually elegant’ dining in a warm and comfortable setting. The open kitchen can be seen from the dining room, featuring a ceramic hearth oven and hardwood grill. The newly constructed outside dining on the second floor gives you an excellent view of Annapolis Harbor.. For the ultra local experience, The Boatyard Bar and Grill, offers a casual dining menu with a raw bar and great comfort food in a “Key West”-inspired environment. From panoramic waterfront views to serious steaks and seafood, or comfort food to eclectic, Eastport has a restaurant to suit everyone’s taste.
Take your personal tour of Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay area simply by walking through Lisa’s studio in Eastport. Her creative photography is artful and the details are incredible. Look for her new pictorial book of Annapolis coming out next year. Our cover shot is but one example of her work.
Enjoy an uncompromising view of Annapolis while dining on “East Meets West Tuna” at the beautiful and waterfront Chart House. This delectable dish features zesty tuna tartare drizzled with wasabi cream paired with seared peppered tuna & avocado, with kim chee slaw and plantain chips.

Shopping City Dock Main Street Maryland Avenue Festival at Riva Visitors to the Chesapeake Bay region come for the waterfront views, quaint waterside towns and villages, and the lure of the Bay itself. One of the major attractions to these historic towns is the shopping. Meandering through the streets, strolling on bricked sidewalks while window shopping is always a favorite visitor pastime. There is a lot of history in Annapolis, and many of the downtown area shops capture the essence of this old city, its maritime heritage, and its unique style. Perhaps best known to the visitor is Annapolis’ downtown Historic District, comprised of the City Dock and Main Street, Maryland Avenue and State Circle, West Street and the West Annapolis area. These neighborhood-style shops have a distinctive flavor bringing something unique to a shopper’s experience.
Among Main Street Gallery’s many talented artists is Kevin Fitzgerald, a highly collected Eastern Shore artist. His contemplated landscapes seem to come from a different time, they will make quite a statement in any home.
Main Street and the City Dock showcase a pleasant mixture of quality, locally owned specialty shops side-by-side with some smaller chain stores. Maryland Avenue and State Circle charm with small, unique shops catering to you, your home, even your pets. Inner West Street is home to some wonderful new shops and galleries, interspersed with happening restaurants and nightlife scene. All are set in the midst of Annapolis’ unsurpassed historic architecture. Upper West Street, the new kid on the block, offers style and livinghere shopping opportunities that everyone can enjoy. Another great place to browse small shops and enjoy a quiet stroll down quaint streets is West Annapolis. Here, out by the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium you can choose from antiques, galleries, and specialty shops. There is plenty of free parking, too. For mall aficionados, Westfield Shoppingtown Annapolis, Arundel Mills, Harbour Center, Festival at Riva, South River Shops, Town Center at Parole and more offer a variety of nationally-known shopping options. And, as with any growing area, look for specialty shops along highways and byways; you won’t want to miss any opportunity.
Winning numerous awards for our fine jewelry and friendly staff, Zachary’s is nationally acclaimed and locally owned. Its showroom was designed to reflect the national and historical heritage of Annapolis. There is no better shopping venue. Visit us to shop or to just say “hi”. You will see that we earned our national recognition as one of America’s finest jewelry stores. Photo credit: ©heathercrowder.
Hours of operation vary tremendously within the different Annapolis shopping areas, so it’s generally a good idea to call before visiting. Ample parking is available in several downtown garages and and keep an eye out for the Circulator (Blue Trollies) and enjoy the free ride around the Central Business District! Look for the electric eCruiser cars around town, too. Annapolis area shops are justly proud of their reputation for customer service, and you will find friendly and helpful assistance. Most shops will provide shipping and, quite often, free tourist advice. No matter what time of year you choose, Annapolis offers a shopping experience that will make you want to return again and again!

alking down Main Street is an event undertaken regularly by both visitors and locals to this historic area. When strolling the brick sidewalks from City Dock to Church Circle, the feet seem to pick up the rhythm of bygone sailing days, political discussions from the revolutionary to the present day, and the pleasant hum of specialty shops and businesses. Main Street, Annapolis is a unique place whether you are shopping for that special boat fitting or fitting for a special outfit. These mostly locally owned companies offer a wide variety of gifts, clothing, food and fun. After all, Annapolis has a history of catering to a wide variety of people. Heading uphill you will see the spire of St. Anne’s Parish in the center of Church Circle. Officially established in 1692, the year the Provincial Assembly voted to make Anne Arundel Town the new capital of the Province of Maryland, St. Anne’s has always been a centerpiece of Annapolis. The present church was completed in 1859 and, at the request of the City of Annapolis, St. Anne’s has since housed the Town Clock in the tower which was completed after the Civil War in 1866. Turn around and head downhill to view the sparkling waters of Spa Creek greet the City Dock area at the base of Main Street. Since Annapolis’ beginnings, the water has meant both livelihood and life to this old city. From trading tobacco to working watermen to the “sailing capital of the world” and new home to the Sailing Hall of Fame at City Dock, the water has led commerce to the foot of Main Street and up the hill for many years. Enjoy your time on the Main Street of Annapolis and the many enticing opportunities laid at your feet on the brick paved sidewalks lined with history.

Maryland Avenue and State Circle
Boutiques, Antiques, Art & Great Food! H
istoric adventure awaits you in the heart of Annapolis on Maryland Avenue and State Circle. Located between the State House and the United States Naval Academy, Maryland Avenue and State Circle continue their tradition as a place for all the good things in life. From antiques to restaurants, historic homes to tours of history, the Avenue and the Circle are must-stop-and-see places in Annapolis. When laying out the town in 1696, Governor Francis Nicholson chose the highest point in the city for the State House. Ringed by State Circle, the State House has always been the focal point of this celebrated city. The building is the oldest capitol in the United States in continuous legislative use. In the eighteenth century, Maryland Avenue was known as the most fashionable residential street in the city. The great mansions of Thomas Bordley, Samuel Chase, and Matthias Hammond were built here along the Avenue. In the nineteenth century, Maryland Avenue was home to the Opera House and the Annapolis Post Office. In 1845, Maryland Avenue served as the entry way to the main gate leading onto the yard of the newly formed United States Naval Academy. Today, Maryland Avenue provides immediate access to the Chapel, Museum, Bancroft Hall, and the academic buildings from Gate 3. The Circle and Avenue are beloved by devoted locals and knowledgeable visitors for their quality shops, personal service and quaint atmosphere. Maryland Avenue and State Circle are rightfully proud of their position as a living history of American shop keeping, the last bastion of small, independent, specialty shops in historic Annapolis.

simple French kitchen featuring French and American classics, all made from scratch using the best fresh, quality ingredients. The centerpiece of the menu and, the open kitchen, is a wood-fired grill. Using oak and hickory wood adds an amazing flavor to each dish you won’t find anywhere else!
We also feature a raw bar with local oysters, a great small plates menu and all the food is accompanied by an award-winning craft beer, cocktail and wine list. One can dine at the chefs counter at the open kitchen, in the dining room featuring soaring ceilings and garage doors that open up onto the large patio. An outside bar rounds off the choices so that you can have a quick burger while watching the game, enjoy an intimate dinner for two and feel like you’re in Paris, or join a bunch of friends at the huge outdoor community table. The “Brasserie,” as the locals call it, is a great place for all occasions and always full of fun and energy. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is casual and everything on the menu is always fresh and good! On the weekends from April until November you can also enjoy all the best regional bands “under the stars” on the patio with both bars serving great drinks. It’s a family affair, with Chef Brendan Keegan and Operator Brian Fox on hand to ensure a great experience every time. As an independent, family restaurant we take pride in giving every customer a great experience and work every day to make sure that happens. Be adventurous in your choices, try that unsual wine by the glass or seasonal beer on tap. Order the escargot, you will not be disappointed! Whether you stop by for a bite on your way to the beach, catch some live music, or enjoy a great meal with friends and family; we love to entertain and hope you embrace the “Brass Life!” French and American “food with flair…is served up at this “friendly” Easton brasserie whose “garage-chic” setting with its bay doors that open to a “sprawling patio” and outside bar; the “joie de vivre” is further expressed by an “ample” selection of wine and beer, all “reasonably” priced. -Zagat.com “Certificate of Excellence” -tripadvisor.com “Mulitple Award-Winning & Most Booked Restaurant” -opentable.com 206 N. rom the moment you enter Mike & Eric’s Front Street Restaurant & Bar you become enveloped in warmth and friendliness.
You’re immediately greeted by a smiling face and a willingness to please.
You feel at home amidst the blue checked tablecloths, the softly glowing candles, the walls lined with local photographs. The Front Street bar is a replica of local Skipjack Rosie Parks, and the authentic tin ceiling reminds one of bygone days. This elegantly casual storefront restaurant, located in the heart of historic downtown St. Michaels., is the newest addition to Talbot Street’s selection of eateries. The name Front Street pays homage to the past as well, says Mike Whittington, co-owner and general manager of Front Street, who, while growing up in St. Michaels remembers locals referring to Talbot St. as Front Street, while Freemont St. was known as Back Street. The houses that are currently shops on Talbot St. were once private homes and Mike remembers that the “front parlor” was always for company and entertaining. “Welcome to our front parlor”, Mike says of the Front Street dining room,
“Come in and make yourself at home” After you’re seated and served a generous pour from the small, carefully chosen wine list, co- owner and Chef Eric Nunamaker takes over. A graduate of The New England Culinary Institute, working chef for over 25 years and St.Michaels resident for the last nine years, Eric combines his many years of experience to create an eclectic menu with influences from around the world. “The best friends a chef in St. Michaels can have” says Chef Eric, “are the watermen and farmers surrounding our area. It’s a great relationship, we sustain one another”. Fresh selections, prepared daily, changing seasonally, evolving naturally, at Mike & Eric’s Front Street Restaurant & Bar. Co-owners Mike, Eric and Randy welcome you to casual gourmet dining, in the heart of St. Michaels.

eveloped from early land grants in the 1600’s, the area known as St. Michaels developed a reputation as an excellent place for ship building and many shipwrights and craftsman moved in to support the growing industry. Incorporated as a town in 1804, the village was surveyed and platted as three squares: Harrison’s square at the north end, Thompson’s square to the southwest and Braddock’s square, developed earlier, in the southeast. Many of the current homes and a few shops date from this period. As America developed and the shipbuilding business declined, St. Michaels began to rise as a seafood processing and packing center. The boat building trade flourished once again with construction of smaller, shallow draft vessels to support the growing seafood industry. The result of the specialized boat building can be seen today in bugeyes, Skipjacks and the log canoes which still race in the area. It was in the 1930’s that a burgeoning tourism industry developed in St. Michaels. With visitors coming to enjoy the fishing, crabbing and Eastern Shore lifestyle, boarding houses, cottages and inns developed to support the incoming traffic. The charming character of St. Michaels continues to attract both landlubbers and boaters to enjoy the fine food, interesting shopping, historical attractions and “down the shore” lifestyle.
