Find the constellations and read the story of how they came to be.

Offering assistance to a neighbor is a great way to help the community and get to know the people in your area.

In ancient Greece, people would use the stars to tell stories. They would find shapes in the sky that resembled different characters in Greek mythology and use them to depict their tales. These constellations were later used to help travelers on land and sea find their way at night.

Below are some of the ways you could help your neighbors (with permission).

Orion was the son of Poseidon and the most skilled hunter in all of Greece. Bored with hunting the animals of the mortal world, he descended into the underworld and began slaying its many monsters and beasts. The Goddess of Earth, Gaea, grew upset with Orion as she felt he had great disregard for nature. She sent a giant scorpion after him and after a long battle, Orion perished. Zeus then put Orion and the scorpion, Scorpius, in the sky among the stars as a favor to his daughter, Artemis, with whom Orion hunted. He was placed beside Taurus, the bull of heaven, whose hide he was born from.

Orion is one of the easier constellations to find. His most notable feature is his belt, which is made up of three bright stars in a line.

TAURUS: THE BULL

SCORPIUS: THE SCORPION

Taurus is positioned facing Orion. If you follow the line of Orion’s Belt to the right, your eyes will eventually settle upon a bright star that is the right eye of Taurus.

Scorpius is positioned opposite Orion and Taurus. Look for a large red star. This star is called Antares and it represents the scorpion’s heart.
