Congress Conference Guide 2013

Monday, January 7 Pre-Trade Show Events 11:15 to 12:00 p.m. What is the Risk to Runoff Water Quality Posed by Fertilization of Turfgrass? The contamination of runoff by nutrients (both dissolved and particulate) found in fertilizer such as phosphorous and nitrogen, contributes to eutrophication of lakes, causing negative impacts on the aquatic flora and fauna. At the same time, healthier turfgrass systems improve surface water quality through natural filtration and absorption of water, which limits runoff intensity. This session presents an overview of a study aimed at determining the real threat posed to water quality by turfgrass fertilization and restricting fertilization. Dr. Christopher Murray, Lakehead University

2:00 to 3:00 p.m. The New Face of Lawncare: Making IPM Work for You Dr. Jordan will discuss integrated pest management practices as they relate specifically to lawn care, with an emphasis on monitoring, cultural practices, educating clients, and specific pest management, as well as discussion related to recent research conducted at the G.T.I.. Best Practices in Human Resources Berton Room

Managing a successful business is a complex and often daunting responsibility. One of the major challenges is the balancing act between managing the volume of sales with having the right number of employees with the right skills at the right time. For most landscape companies the ability to grow the business and retain customers is dependent on the caliber and skill set of its workforce. Landscape Ontario developed an H.R. Toolkit that provides practical tools and templates that will assist fast paced, deadline driven business to implement or enhance existing H.R. processes with a systematic approach that works for supervisors/managers who are often out on job sites. 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. OPENING KEYNOTE

Did you know that every organization in Ontario with one or more employees must be compliant with the Customer Service Standard of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) as of January 1, 2012? As well, there are four other standards that have requirements you must meet over the next several years.

Customer Service Activism Cohen Ballroom

“I believe, on the whole, that Customer Service in North America stinks.” Meet Roy Prevost. Some of the most blatant culprits are the large multinationals who just don’t get it, according to Roy. In the midst of this dysfunctionality, he will regale attendees with wonderful stories of great service providers and will celebrate the winners and scold the offenders. Attendees will learn that, not surprisingly, small to medium businesses are the ones that go far beyond the call of duty and create a “magical experience” for their customers. This session will leave you pumped and allow you to relive the line from the Movie Network, “I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore.” Roy Prevost Oakray Marketing Services Ltd. Advancements in technology and availability of information have rendered traditional methods for gaining a sustainable competitive advantage useless. The most successful organizations today are those best described as being ‘healthy.’ This session will uncover what it means to be healthy as an organization and how to make it happen with proven methods and tools.

Do the words, “I QUIT!” strike fear in your heart or make your stomach sink? They should – especially if they’re coming from your key employees. They may put it nicely, “I found another opportunity” or “I’ve accepted another offer.” The end result is the same. It puts your business at risk. In this session, Roy will teach you how to protect yourself and methods to avoid attrition.
