How Innovation is Helping to Capture Opportunities Created by Shifting Demographics 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm JIM BRANDLE PhD, MSc, BSA Canada was at its beginning and still is a nation of immigrants. Every year more than 280,000 new people come to Canada to settle, to work and to further our society. They bring with them new food traditions and new holidays and from that comes a wealth of opportunity for horticulture. New food traditions mean new crops and new holidays mean new ornamental plants, both of which bring the potential for new customers and new markets for growers.
At Vineland we are working closely with new Canadians to understand their needs for fruits vegetables, flowers and trees and bringing those possibilities to growers and their customers. Join Jim Brandle as he cooks up methods for you to keep up with trends and incorporate edibles in your design.

Active Design 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm
HAIG SEFERIAN OALA, CSLA, FASLA, CLD, LO AND BRAD SMITH OALA, CSLA, ASLA Today, obesity is poised to overtake tobacco as the leading preventable cause of death in America. More than a third of all Americans are obese and an additional third, overweight. Active Design is an approach to the development of buildings, streets, and neighborhoods that uses architecture and urban planning to make daily physical activity and healthy foods more accessible and inviting. Through Transportation, Buildings, Recreation and Food Access, Active Design transforms the built environment. Designs of the future must include physical activity on some level for all. The Centre for Active Design based in New York City drives this concept to design industry. We are seeing this in playgrounds for children and public spaces that are playgrounds for adults. In this session Haig Seferian and Brad Smith will explore two case studies where active design principles have been incorporated to make a difference in how people use outdoor space.

If Only Trees Could Talk: Tree Health Issues in the Landscape

Building Resilient Turfgrass Systems for the Build Environment
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm MICHAEL BROWNBRIDGE PhD Management of turf in residential areas creates considerable challenges. Grass systems have to contend with a range of biotic (living) and abiotic (environmental) stresses to survive and thrive. Plus, regulations increasingly limit the type of inputs that can be used to improve lawn health. Yet we do have a number of tools at our disposal that can be utilized to create more durable and sustainable turfgrass systems. This presentation will provide an update on research carried out in 2015, including results from trials done to evaluate new biopesticides targeting white grubs, field and lab tests investigating insect responses to new turfgrass varieties, and insights in to new developments and opportunities that are likely to contribute to the development of more resilient turfgrass systems for the built environment.
Using Pesticides: What You Need to Know
1:30 pm – 2:00 pm SCOTT OLAN BSc Scott Olan from the MOECC will provide the audience with important and timely updates from the Ministry of the Environment discussing the do’s and don’ts for pesticide use in Ontario. applicators understand and be prepared to pass your next inspection. BREAK 2:00 pm – 2:15 pm CLOSING KEYNOTE
Lessons Learned from Growing Turf Indoors
2:15 pm – 3:30 pm ERIC LYONS PhD Lyons, one of Canada’s top turf grass experts, is leading an ambitious indoor experiment with the University of Guelph in partnership with the Toronto Blue Jays to define environmental conditions and limitations to determine requirements to grow real grass inside the Rogers Centre. It’s a tall order, and probably one of the most watched sports field transformation projects in North America. The challenges of growing turf grass in an indoor stadium have led to insights that will improve turf grass management for lawns, landscapes, sports fields and golf courses. The session will cover key points from his research and emphasize the impacts of light quantity and quality on turf grass health, and the specific needs for pest management. In addition, details regarding water use with a variety of turf grass species and drought tolerance will be presented. Dr Lyons is working closely with agrometeorologists and climate researchers to achieve results and the audience will be treated to their findings. NETWORKING RECEPTION 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm With colleagues and sponsors, including a Grand Prize Draw. Must be present to win. Registration fee: $99 until DEC. 18. Fee goes up to $129 after Dec. 18. 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm Waxman Room Toronto Congress Centre MIKE LYSECKI If you don’t measure your employees and relay the results to them, they have no way to measure their success. On the other hand, with an understanding of their measurements, they can reassure themselves, despite minor setbacks (which can lead to lost motivation) that they are successful. And when they know they’re successful, they’re motivated. Need a greater motivator to tie measurements into a bonus structure which creates opportunities and, therefore, incentive. Learn how to create an incentive system that allows you to fairly differentiate your employees. Learn how to set realistic and attainable budgets and sales goals for your employees, and how to communicate these to your employees and explain how your measurement system and bonus structure will work. People don’t reach their true potential unless they know how to measure themselves. If you implement a system that measures people on efficiency and productivity, your newcomers will see opportunities.
