GISC PROGRAM SESSIONS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14 – BMO CENTRE 8:00 – 8:35 AM KEYNOTE Alberta’s Economy 2020: What next? Todd Hirsch

After surviving the worst recession in three decades, Alberta’s economy had started to recover in 2017. But almost three years later, the economy remains sluggish. What factors will weigh on Alberta in 2020? Which critical elements will shape the province in the long-term? And how will Alberta adapt to the rapidly changing global and national economy? Join ATB Financial’s Chief Economist, Todd Hirsch, as he demystifies the economy and answers these important questions.

8:40 – 9:40 AM Deciphering the Color Code for More Sales!  Christina Salwitz

Color options are abundant, but how do we give guidance to help narrow down the choices? Some people live with a patchwork of colors in the landscape, while others “play it safe” with neutral everything. How do we address this in a retail setting when we’re supposed to not only be making sales but also be giving design advice? Learn how to take cues from your customers and turn them into sales by understanding how color effects people and their unconscious choices.

Designing Sites to Fit Desirable Trees Dr. Ed Gilman

You have heard it before: “Plant the right tree in the right place”. This is fine, but we really need to be “designing the right place for the right tree”. Learn how to design spaces, including sidewalks and parking lots, to support tree growth so your design vision can be fulfilled. Topics include making space for tree roots and tops, traditional urban landscape designs vs. designs that actually work, and why. There will be lots of photographs, illustrations, specifications, and take-home messages. Biocontrol-based IPM, it’s all about the System Dr. Rose Buitenhuis and Nadine Stielow

The use of biocontrol in horticultural crops is increasing at a fast pace. However, you can’t just replace pesticides with predators and parasitoids. Biocontrol-based IPM has to consider all factors that cause pest outbreaks, including the crop itself, its surroundings and environmental conditions. This session, presented jointly by a researcher and a grower, will introduce a systematic approach to sustainable pest management combining research results with examples from greenhouse production that can be applied to many crops.

2019 GISC | 7

Architectural Plants Paul Zammit

Have you ever wondered how to add a sense of drama or WOW to your landscapes, for maximum interest throughout the seasons? Paul believes the answer is through high impact, architectural plants. Join Paul as he shares what he believes to be some of the most dramatic hardy and tender specimens, both individual and in combinations, for texture, colour and form.

9:50 – 10:50 AM Snow Response Plans and Contract Bidding Dale Keep

In this session, attendees will learn how to spot traps often present in RFPs and get suggestions on how to deal with them. Additionally, we will cover the development of response plans designed to deal with those hidden and often unintended traps that make snow and ice contracting so difficult.

Green Infrastructure Practices in Low Impact Developments: Opportunities in the Emerging World of HighPerformance Landscapes Mary Ann Uhlman

Low Impact Development practices are proven to be vital solutions to environmental problems associated with untreated stormwater run-off. These practices include green roofs, bioswales, rain gardens, vegetated swales and absorbent landscapes. This presentation will introduce attendees to these practices and how they differ from typical ‘mow and blow’ landscapes. Learn about the business opportunities these high-performance landscapes present and the new skill sets required for success. Low Maintenance Landscapes A New Partnership with Nature Bill Peregrine

Why is it with all the resources at our disposal, we struggle to “maintain” our customers’ properties and yet Nature does it beautifully without us

lifting a finger? What principles does Nature employ to make it all look so simple and how can we turn those principles into practices to use on our customers’ properties? From principle to practice, we will look at how Nature takes care of herself and what we can do to align our properties with the Earth’s naturally occurring systems. Container Gardening – Four Seasons of Interest Paul Zammit

Just as outdoor landscapes change throughout the year, Paul believes seasonal transformations should also be reflected in dramatic container arrangements. Join Paul for an energetic presentation where he will discuss the steps to plant an eye catching and lasting container. He will also highlight many of his favorite choice plants, container combinations and planter accents for every season.

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Hope is Not an Effective Merchandising Strategy, but F.A.S.T. is! Christina Salwitz

Are your display efforts bringing you measurable sales results? The art of display and merchandising in the 21st century has become fanworthy on social media and if you’re not creating high quality dramatic displays that get you raves, you’re absolutely missing out on sales, too. By breaking down the steps it takes to create results-worthy

displays, you will understand and learn how to achieve the same buzzworthy attention as retailers like Anthropologie, Terrain, Flora Grubb and more. Advanced Turf Management Strategies Jason Pick

This presentation will discuss turfgrass management strategies with reference to current projects of the Alberta Turfgrass Research foundation, and the value of investing in turf research. Attendees will also learn cultural practices, soils and sports field specifications, as well as fertility best management practices. Restoring Shade Trees to Dignity Following Storms Dr. Ed Gilman

Pruning storm-damaged trees dramatically improves structure and reduces risk. We will show how to clean, and then manage sprouts back into acceptable branch structure by pruning the correct branches. This session covers basics and enough detail to begin making better choices tomorrow. What’s Working in a Down Economy Panel hosted by: Joe Salemi

Join a panel of industry leaders to discuss what is working, and not working any longer, in the current economy. From marketing to recruitment, efficiencies to cost savings, the panel, moderated by Dynascape’s Joe Salemi, will explore this new reality and share their best tips to thrive in tough times.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15 – BMO CENTRE 8:00 – 8:35 AM KEYNOTE Climate Change in our Gardens Jessi Bloom

The landscape industry is feeling the impacts of climate change today. While many gardeners are faced with extreme weather and pest-related challenges, there are some simple solutions. Join award-winning ecological designer and best-selling author, Jessi Bloom, who shares beautiful and inspiring ideas for tackling climate change challenges – from plant choices to simple maintenance tricks and permaculture concepts to implement in your garden.

8:40 – 9:40 AM Scouting for Pests in the Landscape: A Practical Guide on how to Detect and Assess the Risk of Pests Dr. Ken Fry

The session will examine what to look for, how to look for it, and how to make sense of what you have found in support of making informed pest management decisions. We will discuss how to look for signs, symptoms, patterns, and population development over time. What patterns to use and how many samples to take to ensure an accurate assessment of pest risk will be addressed. Production Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them Paul Pilon

As a horticultural consultant for over a decade, Paul has certainly seen

10 | 2019 GISC

his share of good crops, as well as a few less than admirable ones. Join Paul in this informative session where he’ll share several all-too-common production pitfalls he frequently sees, as well as how you can avoid making the same mistakes. He’ll be discussing a number of areas to improve propagation, starting materials, planting depths, growing mixes, fertility, and pest management in greenhouse crops. The Secrets of Designing and Maximizing Small Outdoor Spaces Scot Eckley

After 15 years of designing and building thoughtful, family-friendly spaces in the Greater Seattle area, Scot has developed seven key strategies to get the most out of small outdoor spaces, both visually and functionally.  Learn these seven principles and how to incorporate them in your projects so that your client’s small spaces provide big rewards.  Topics include planting strategies and how to use key landscape elements to create a sense of larger space. Tough Conversations Kara Deringer

Whether giving feedback, dismissing an employee, or resolving conflict, we are faced with tough conversations on what seems to be an endless basis. Kara will provide her top seven practical tips in navigating these conversations with tact and tenacity. She will offer a step-by-step method for tackling the toughest of tough conversations.

9:50 – 10:50 AM Soil Reports: How to Read and Adjust a Client’s Property Bill Peregrine

Soil is life. Not only does soil store and release nutrients for a plant’s use but it also is the first line of defense in disease-free plants and the grounding point of any IPM strategies. Healthy soils equal healthy plants and need to be evaluated and balanced. In this session, Bill will discuss the physical nature of soil, the life in the soil and how soil holds and exchanges nutrients with plants. Look at soil

sampling and learn how to interpret nutrient test results to make adjustments in the field. Biopesticides and Biostimulants – Friends with Benefits Dr. Rose Buitenhuis

Biostimulants and biopesticides are well-known terms and commonly used by growers, but understanding exactly what they are and how they work is key to their efficacy. Rose will provide examples of the benefits these materials can deliver and will unravel some of the mysteries surrounding their use.

Rainwise Gardening Jessi Bloom

The Best Tree Planting Guide Dr. Darby McGrath

Creating stormwater management solutions has become a necessary skillset in the world of landscape professionals. Join Jessi Bloom, who will share solutions to help manage excess water from storm systems beautifully. From rain gardens to rainwater collection systems, gardens can utilize the extra rainwater and help it infiltrate back into the ground naturally. By planting a rain garden or other bioretention systems with native plants, we can create a beautiful, low-maintenance and droughttolerant landscape feature, while protecting our waters and creating a habitat for beneficial wildlife.

The recently released Ontario Landscape Tree Planting Guide is one of the most comprehensive tree planting guides ever developed for use by the landscape industry across Canada. Join author Dr. Darby McGrath, to learn more about how this document was developed as well as the rationale for this new, unique format. This talk will explore The Guide which is comprised of summaries of up-to-date research and a series of corresponding field sheets that refines the information into actionable items.

New Perennials: Navigating Through the Introductions Paul Pilon

Everyone is looking for the hottest, must-have, new perennials. New isn’t always better, but in many instances, recent introductions do offer notable improvements or have great potential in today’s market. Paul will navigate through many of the recent introductions and tell you which ones he sees as having the most potential for growing, marketing and landscape performance.

After advising managers in public, private, and non-profit organizations for over ten years, Kara has pinpointed some of the most common and dangerous blind spots of professionals at all levels. She will discuss how to recognize these blind spots, and more importantly, how to ensure that they are not in the way of you heightening your performance.
