Industry and Association News Humboldt Healing Garden Project Update
DED Spreading to Western Saskatchewan
Due to COVID-19 Restrictions and the health and safety of everyone involved with the project, the build of the garden has been POST PONED until Fall 2020.
Other than isolated cases, Dutch elm disease (DED) has only been found on the east side of the province, but that’s starting to change. In recent years, the disease has spread and is now established further west than ever before. Numerous communities have already lost many American elms, which are quickly killed by the disease. DED is spreading through rural communities, native elm stands, farmyards and shelterbelts, and the affected area is expected to grow.
Landscape Alberta & Landscape Saskatchewan have partnered with the City of Humboldt, the Humboldt Hospital Foundation, Scotts Canada and Communities in Bloom to build a “Healing Garden” at the Humboldt Regional Hospital. This garden will not only serve as a place of relaxation and tranquility for those receiving treatment and care at the hospital, but as a memorial for lives lost in the Humboldt Bronco’s tragedy. The design for the project has been finalized and we are now looking to secure product, labour, equipment and cash donations to complete the project. Visit our website for a complete list of all product takeaways, as well as labour and equipment needs. If you are able to help with this amazing project in any way possible, please let us know. We thank you so much for your consideration and generosity. Working together as an industry we can all give a little and make a huge difference. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Kyla at kyla.hardon@landscape-alberta.com.
Managing DED is challenging in wild stands and rural areas, but there are critical actions you can take to protect your community’s elm trees: • Conduct annual surveys to detect symptomatic trees; • Promptly remove and properly dispose of infected trees; and • Comply with provincial DED regulations, including the annual pruning ban and restrictions on the transport, storage and use of elm wood. For more information about DED, visit: ttps://www.saskatchewan.ca/business/agriculturenatural-resources-and-industry/forestry/forest-health/ dutch-elm-disease
Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy Extended Beyond June, 2020 The government announced that the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) will be extended by an additional 12 weeks to August 29, 2020. They will continue consulting with key business and labour representatives over the next month on potential adjustments to the program, including the 30% revenue decline threshold. They hope you take confidence in this extended measure and keep your employees on payroll. They’re going to continue being there for you every step of the way through this crisis. Trudeau also announced a new Industry Strategy Council, led by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Navdeep Bains and chaired by Monique Leroux, that has been tasked with studying the effects of COVID-19 on specific sectors in Canada. CNLA has reached out to see if we could participate in this council and have been advised that we have been noted as expressing our interest. This is at the very beginning stages and they will provide more information in the coming weeks.

Industry and Association News Canada Emergency Business Account Expansion to include Owner-Operated small Businesses The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced an expansion to the eligibility criteria for the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) to include many owneroperated small businesses.
“The government will continue to work on solutions to help business owners and entrepreneurs who operate through their personal bank account, as opposed to a business account, or have yet to file a tax return, such as newly created businesses.”
The program will now be available to a greater number of businesses that are sole proprietors receiving income directly from their businesses, businesses that rely on contractors, and family-owned corporations that pay employees through dividends rather than payroll. To qualify under the expanded eligibility criteria, applicants with payroll lower than $20,000 would need: • a business operating account at a participating financial institution • a Canada Revenue Agency business number, and to have filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return. • eligible non-deferrable expenses between $40,000 and $1.5 million. Eligible non-deferrable expenses could include costs such as rent, property taxes, utilities, and insurance. Expenses will be subject to verification and audit by the Government of Canada. Funding will be delivered in partnership with financial institutions. More details, including the launch date for applications under the new criteria, will follow in the days to come. The government will continue to work on solutions to help business owners and entrepreneurs who operate through their personal bank account, as opposed to a business account, or have yet to file a tax return, such as newly created businesses.

Advanced Payment Program (APP) Applications Now Available for Nursery Growers Nursery growers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba can now apply for an APP loan through the Agri-Commodity Management Association (ACMA). Application forms can be accessed, and questions can be answered by contacting Kara Saville, Program Delivery Manager or going to the ACMA website. Contact details and the web address are at the end of this message. Here are the details you need to know: ACMA is happy to announce that we have been approved to administer the Advance Payments Program to nursery producers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta! The Advance Payments Program (APP) is a federally guaranteed short-term loan program meant to help producers with cash flow to get their product to market. We have been administering this program, on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, for over 10 years, mainly in the Atlantic Provinces, and have over 100 items approved to issue an advance on.
The maximum advance allowed for any one producer, or farm, is $1,000,000. The first $100,000 advanced each year is interest free and anything above that is charged interest at Prime less ¼%. We do charge an administration fee based on the total advance received but other than that, if repayments are made on time, there are no additional fees associated with the program. For nursery production, advances are available starting April 1st each year and will be calculated based on what you plan to sell in the current season (12 months from your advance date or until your operation closes for the winter, whichever is earlier). Our advance rates should be 50% of market value and are used to calculate your requested advance amount. When calculating your advance amount, we look at two things, the first is your anticipated production/sales for the current season which you will calculate through the attached spreadsheet. The second is your 2020 AgriStability Reference Margin. Whichever of these is the lower amount will become the maximum we can advance in the current year. For most commodities, repayments are due within 30 days of you being paid or 60 days from shipping however, given the quantity of products you move in a year it would be impossible to track and repay on each item sold. Instead, nursery

Survey for Growers to Support CNLA Advocacy for Financial Aid CNLA would like to ask some general questions relating to how your nursery farm and staffing have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, since the last survey was conducted in April. The survey is designed to quantify changes in sales, staffing and business conditions across Canada for primary nursery production. Note; If you also own a retail garden centre, please limit responses to the farming portion of your business. Garden Centres Canada has issued a survey for the retail side of your business.
Our goal is to provide confidential responses to governmental agencies in an effort to ease the financial burden to farm owners, their staff and families. All responses will be held in strictest confidence and no individual responses will be shared. Flowers Canada has released a follow up survey to its members too, and we will combine responses to provide the full impact to ornamental horticulture in Canada. Any questions or suggestions you may have with regards to this survey can be directed to Jamie Aalbers, Growers Manager (jamie@canadanursery.com) Take the Survey:

producers are allowed to provide up to 6 post-dated cheques to repay your advance. These payments should be roughly in line with the repayment timeframes – meaning if you start selling in July you can’t wait until November to repay – but we will discuss repayment schedules as part of the application to make sure it fits within program rules and still works for you. The interest free portion is always the first to be repaid. Is Your Landscape Company Financially Accountable? BY JEFFREY SCOTT
Financial Accountability doesn’t need to be a bad word. The definition of accountability means to calculate or give an accounting of. With good people on board, you merely need a process for ’taking an account of the situation, then making decisions based on that. In the past week I have worked with 3 different landscape business owners on the challenge of improving their financial results. Each conversation circled back to what the leader was doing weekly with their team. This year (more than past years) raises the important question, ‘What is the role of the leader?’ Your single most important role is to be a strong, effective communicator.
What should you be communicating? Communication comes in many flavors, but financially it means this: • Engage your team in setting the goals, • Give your people constant updates on their results • Identify where they are ahead and behind. • And in those places where you are behind, identify the gaps and ensuring your team takes ownership for closing the gaps.

Is Your Landscape Company Financially Accountable? It’s called financial accountability. Here is how you do this. 7 Steps for Financial Accountability
(Note: This is based on my comprehensive 14 step plan… these are the first seven most critical steps.) 1. The company and each division are following an accurate monthly budget, based on ’time tested’ billable and non-billable hours assumptions. 2. Crews are given daily feedback on their results regarding their hours and efficiency goals 3. Divisions review their results weekly with their crew leaders, making use of group sharing strategies like ‘forced ranking’. 4. Leadership team reviews a company dashboard weekly. Each leader on your team has their own set of numbers to report on. 5. Job costing is reviewed frequently and consistently, with feedback given to both crews and estimators. 6. Sales goals and actuals are reviewed with your sales team weekly, based on monthly goals (broken into weekly goals as needed) 7. Your P&L is reviewed monthly; with all the main line items assigned to leaders in the room to track and report on. Even though incentives may be part of your financial game plan, they are only important after you set up this foundation...first things first! Your Challenge:
Don’t get distracted by the current hullabaloo going on in politics and the papers; keep your team focused on the daily and weekly habits needed to win! Plan these meetings I have outlined in your calendar right now. You may feel that you only have an average team, but I guarantee you will achieve above average results when you raise your game as the financial leader. And if you tell me your team is actually above average, then I guarantee you will enjoy stellar results with these seven steps. Some people say to keep your head down and grind it out. Not me. I say, Keep your eyes on the scoreboard, and keep communicating the score to your team. After you have done this, hit reply and let me know how it works out.

COVID-19 Drives New and Nimble Strategies BY JACKIE HART
We have landed in a strange place. A spring where there exists fear, confusion, hesitation, stop-work orders, fines, tension, polarized debates, newly laid off staff, business cash flow that’s on fumes, mixed messages to customers and parents learning to home-school on a moments notice. The past 6 weeks for me has been filled with dozens of hours every week working with business owners to CTRL>ALT>DEL on ‘the plan that was’ and helping them to pivot to something else, something surreal and completely different. Finding calm and purposeful intention amid chaos and fear is hard work. Way harder than being in the customary slip stream of long spring hours and frenetic days. And being intentional about emerging from the COVID-19 Era able to look back proud of how we handled ourselves, our team our business viability and our brand is the key goal at the moment. There are silver linings tangled in between the unanticipated conversations with staff, suppliers, customers and creditors. Silver linings that have emerged in ways least expected. There’s time for your own professional development, and your teams’ like never before. It’s also a great time to connect with business groups and business communities. For example, I started twice-weekly Zoom chats with hundreds of entrepreneurs who belong in a Peer Network I facilitate – to offer resources, mentoring, hope, and connectedness during which all have found comfort that their not alone finding their way through COVID-19. Giving members a place to share frustration and solutions has been an important part of helping them to regain their momentum and focus. And to plant hope. Also, countless volunteers have stepped up, onto committees, Zoom meetings and as speakers on webinars – all to keep business professionals informed and moving forward through unprecedented stress and disruption. Companies across this Province have been forced to re-think, tighten up, and show empathy. Last month I was asked by the Nursery and Landscape Association Executives of North America to moderate two webinars with 4 of my professional business coach peers – Mark Bradley of LMN, Jim Paluch of JP Horizons, Phil Harwood of Grow The Bench and Jeffrey Scott of Jeffrey Scott Consulting. It was absolutely great, with over 650 professionals both north and south of the border, coast to coast. We talked about ‘what to do’, and ‘how to think’ through this crisis. I wanted to share with you here, the advice I offered in that webinar – as a way to help you to keep moving forward. GREEN FOR LIFE SUMMER 2020 • 12
“Find the courage and resolve to accept that we are in an unprecedented situation. There’s no manual for this. (Yet.) And you’re going to have to think differently about your business than ever before, to create new solutions and efficiencies that align with current reality.” 1. Be Conscious Of Your Mindset.
Judgement keeps us stuck. Acceptance moves us forward. Find the courage and resolve to accept that we are in an unprecedented situation. There’s no manual for this. (Yet.) And you’re going to have to think differently about your business than ever before, to create new solutions and efficiencies that align with current reality. It might not be pretty, and you need to build your own bridge to success while you’re walking across it - in the weeks and months ahead. Breathe. Focus. Grow Forward. Even if it seems counter-intuitive, you’ve GOT this.
COVID-19 Drives New and Nimble Strategies 2. Manage Your Stress Level.
Make the time to unplug every week. Go outside. Have some fun. Decompress. You can’t lead others, or your company brand, or the company bank account if you’re overwhelmed. Pay attention to your ‘self-talk’. Don’t panic. 3. Focus on what you can Control, and on what you can Influence.
Give no ‘air-time’ to things you can’t control. Answer three key questions: • What (has happened that I didn’t expect)? WRITE IT DOWN. • So What (does that mean to my business, cash flow, team etc)? WRITE IT DOWN. ALL OF IT. • Now What (can I leverage and change to adapt and keep growing forward)? WRITE DOWN EVERY IDEA, RESOURCE, RELATIONSHIP etc. Devise a framework of a plan – be nimble, be prepared for a few ‘what if’ scenarios. Focus on Forward-Proofing your business and community.
“You can’t lead others, or your company brand, or the company bank account if you’re overwhelmed. Pay attention to your ‘self-talk’.”
We are stronger together. Your company is stronger with you working hard to start with the end in mind: emerging from COVID-19 as a viable, stable, efficient company, with an engaged and grateful team, and a loyal customer base. If you need help figuring out how to pivot and rework your strategy for this year, LET’S TALK. www.consultingbyhart.com Reprinted with permission from Consulting by Hart.

The Landscape Awards Program The Landscape Awards reflect the association’s commitment to creating and preserving the beauty of the urban landscape. The program is also designed to reward independent landscape contracting professionals who execute top quality landscape projects. The Landscape Awards program has four main objectives:
• Encourage landscape contractors to be the best in their field • Provide a marketing opportunity to those companies that receive an award • Encourage a company’s employees to aspire to excellence
• Provide an opportunity to compete in the National Awards of Landscape Excellence Members can enter projects into nine different categories covering construction, maintenance, and design. Each entry is evaluated using a set of criteria; the submissions are not judged against each other. There are two award levels: a Merit Award goes to an entry that earns 70-84 points, and an Excellence Award goes to an entry earning 85 or more points. Entries that achieve Excellence status are eligible to be selected for the National Awards of Landscape Excellence, a Canadawide program developed by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association.
