2021 Census of Agriculture Data Is Here! Discover Farm and Farm Operator Data The first release of findings from the 2021 Census of Agriculture is now available online at https://www.statcan.gc.ca/en/ census-agriculture and includes data about farms and farm operators. These data provide essential information about the agriculture industry and help inform decision-making by farmers, farm organizations and agricultural policy makers. Data from the Census of Agriculture indicate that trends identified in previous census cycles, such as industry consolidation and aging of farm operators, have continued in 2021. At the same time, the agriculture industry is adapting and modernizing, with higher rates of technology adoption, renewable energy production, use of direct marketing solutions, and sustainable farming practices. Over the next few months, Statistics Canada will continue to provide information on the Canadian agriculture industry, and introduce new ways to access the Census of Agriculture data.

City of Edmonton Updated Topsoil Specifications The City of Edmonton recently hosted a meeting to review the changes to the topsoil specifications ahead of the 2022 season. For members that were unable to attend, we’ve created a short summary and provided a link to the relevant section of the landscape standard.

1. Increased soil depths. 2. Revised topsoil parameters. 3. Increased testing (and potentially soil amendments to meet point two). As the season progresses please share your experiences with us at Landscape Alberta so we can effectively share feedback with the City.

Updated Travel Rules Further changes to Canada’s border measures for certain eligible travellers, including Temporary Foreign Workers have been announced. Please be advised that, effective April 25, 2022, at 00:01:00 EDT, all fully vaccinated travellers will no longer be required to provide a quarantine plan upon entry. Furthermore, fully vaccinated travellers arriving to Canada on or after April 25, 2022, will no longer be federally required to do the following for 14 days after arriving: • mask while in public spaces; • monitor and report if they develop signs or symptoms; • quarantine if another traveller in the same travel group exhibits signs or symptoms or tests positive; and • maintain a list of close contacts and locations visited. The Temporary Foreign Worker Program will continue to keep you apprised of any new information as we receive it, and invite you to visit the Canada.ca or travel.gc.ca for further details and updates.

Fuel Tax Act Special Notice Vol. 1 No. 44 : Alberta Fuel Tax Relief This special notice provided by Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA) announces that beginning April 1, 2022 the Government of Alberta will stop collecting fuel tax in order to provide relief from the current high fuel prices. Collection of fuel tax is expected to resume by the later of July 1, 2022 and the time when West Texas Intermediate prices fall below $80 US per barrel.

Launch Of Slips, Trips And Falls Campaign – New Resources Available Alberta’s government is committed to helping job creators and workers create a healthy and safe work environment. Part of that is by making sure information on workplace safety is easy to access. That’s why they’ve launched the OHS Prevention Initiative to help Albertans prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. One of the leading causes of workplace injuries are slips, trips and falls—these can happen on a construction site, in an office or even in a parking lot. By learning about common workplace hazards and identifying health and safety solutions, these injuries can be prevented. Visit the OHS Resource Portal to access new informational videos and bulletins developed specifically for workers, supervisors and employers, with an emphasis on small and medium businesses. They offer economical and straightforward workplace actions to prevent workplace slips, trips and falls and keep workers healthy, safe and on the job. The OHS Prevention Initiative is a partnership between government, industry, health and safety professionals, labour and the Workers’ Compensation Board. Industry and Association News Labour Shortage: Changes To The Temporary Foreign Worker Program On April 4, 2022 the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough, announced the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program Workforce Solutions Road Map. Effective immediately: • No limit to the number of low-wage positions in seasonal industries*.

• Duration of seasonal positions increased from 180 days to 270 days. • Approved LMIA’s are valid for 18 months, an increase from 9 months. • Maximum duration for high-wage and Global Talent Streams has been increased to three years from two-years. Effective April 30: • Seven sectors, including Accommodation and Food Services will allowed to hire up to 30% of their workforce via TFW Program. Includes: Construction (NAICS 23), which may have some overlap in positions for select members.

These steps are viewed by Landscape Alberta / Landscape Saskatchewan as positive for many members who have interest in supplementing their current Canadian workforce. It will not be the only solution required to alleviate the current labour shortages. Ongoing efforts in the last year by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association and other regional and national partners has assisted in clearly communicating the effects of the labour shortage across the landscape industry leading to this announcement.

Equipment Theft On The Rise We have been hearing increasingly from members about brazen thefts from shops and jobsites. Landscape Alberta & CNLA’s insurance partner Marsh Canada

• Store equipment in locked, gated, well lit, enclosed areas

• Pay attention to thefts in the neighborhood and what items are being stolen • Make smaller pieces of equipment inaccessible but blocking with vehicles/larger equipment if left over night A member shared a tip as well for larger equipment theft (vehicle, skid steer, etc.). Make sure to drive the area around your shop to look for it tucked away nearby. Thieves will often drive the stolen item a few blocks and leave it a few days to ensure it is not being GPS tracked. Members have also been successful recovering items by sharing on social media, this really does activate an entire network of your peers to keep their eyes peeled. Building Strategic Relationships (Part 2) BY JACKIE HART

Have you ever wondered how your customers view your company? Have you considered ‘where do we grow to now?’ What’s your strategy to develop relationships and the culture of your business with intention and specific goals? Goals don’t just have to be about KPI’s and metrics. They can also help to direct the increase of intrinsic value in a business. The model I’m sharing here can form an excellent way to benchmark and strategically identify the nature of relationships in your business, and in each division of your business.

This is ‘out of the box’ concept about relationships is one which I first discovered many years ago from Whetstone Inc, and have since simplified. The easiest way to start playing with the power in this model is to assess your current client list, and place them into each of the four levels…. Do they view you as a stranger, supplier, desired supplier or trusted advisor? What would it take to convert each group into the next category? When you consider this framework and overlay it into your company - division by divisionsome of your services may be at level 3 but others may be at level 1 or 2…. Some may NEVER reach level 4.

Level 4 isn’t better. It’s different. It’s deeper. Some companies never go as deep as this on building relationships. For example – with price focused business models – their strategy isn’t to be a desired supplier or a trusted advisor – it’s a volume play, not a loyalty play – where being considered as a ‘strange’ or a ‘supplier’ is just fine. If you’re looking to build your business on loyalty, then there’s value in recognizing which offerings and clients you currently have at each level, and strategize how to nudge into the deeper levels if that’s your intention. Just FYI, whatever stage you think you’re at now, it’s likely actually at one stage lower. A very common mistake is to over evaluate. But, consider this: you don’t yet know what you don’t know about strategically building relationships. I’m writing this article to peak your interest and to inspire you into some intentional client relationship analysis and strategy. When we over-rate ourselves, we stop reaching for higher goals and stretching our ability, and we don’t challenge the status


quo. Developing the focus of culture is key, and it’s important to perfect that focus before thinking of moving to the next level. Another example of how to use this model is to consider your business’ culture focus: are you establishing the business – experimenting… setting up systems, testing your market, service, product, pricing, establishing a team etc.? or are you operating in a culture of ‘doing’? Getting the work done – going hard on contracts, cranking out the work… growing, adding crews etc… At level three, we see companies who are established, and now starting to perfect pricing, production rates, systems, consistency and attention to detail – establishing a company signature, a ‘sweet spot’. By this stage you know what you do well and what to avoid taking on – playing only to the strengths and competency of the team. Once a company reaches level 4 across ALL divisions, there is a culture of engagement – core values, common vision, mission,

Building Strategic Relationships (Part 2) focus, alignment, retention, career growth and commitment. This is tough stage to reach in today’s workforce climate, and happens in companies where a focus on culture, consistency and excellence prevails. Consulting By Hart Stages of Business Relationships

loria Beck is encouraging Canadian landscape and horticulture professionals to get behind the Year of the Garden 2022. The owner of Parkland Garden Centre in Red Deer, Atla. says if the profession rallies around the initiative, it could really grow public awareness about the environmental and lifestyle benefits of plants and gardens.

What is the Year of the Garden 2022? Beck: Year of the Garden 2022 is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the Centennial of Canada’s ornamental horticulture sector marked by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association’s 100th anniversary. It gives us an opportunity to celebrate, engage, educate and inspire Canadians to include gardens and gardening in our lives. After the difficulty of the pandemic, it gives reason to celebrate the recovery by hosting or attending events in private or public gardens, growing more food, or just relaxing in gardens and nature around us. Gardening has such a positive impact on the quality of our lives, which helps with our physical and mental well being. Gardening brings people together. Never before have we needed an activity that the majority of people embrace in one way or another regardless of other beliefs. People take such pride in their accomplishments of gardening and enjoy the calmness that nature brings us. Year of the Garden 2022 is a year-long campaign inviting Canadians to: • Celebrate how plants, gardens and gardening have and continue to contribute to the development and growth of Canada. • Honour Canada’s rich horticulture and garden heritage. • Recognize today’s vibrant garden culture. • Create legacies for a sustainable future. • Bring gardening into schools.

Why are you supporting the initiative? One of the reasons Parkland Garden Centre is supporting the Year of the Garden is because of the positive impact it has on us as individuals, communities and for our environment. Being outdoors is so good for our health. I have seen firsthand the health benefits of so many people as they share their stories at the garden centre. Education is a huge component of this celebration, whether it be experiencing a new site, attending workshops or discovering the benefits to one’s health. Horticulture has changed immensely over the years and we have so much to celebrate with so many new plants and opportunities for our gardens. We see customers trying out new plants, challenging their neighbours to do the same. There is excitement in gardening and we feel it with our customers as they share their secrets and successes. Year of the Garden gives people the opportunity to challenge one another, and help beautify businesses, beautify neglected areas and assist with educating new gardeners (plant parents).

The younger people are interested; we need to help them along with good information. They want to grow their own food not only in summer but year-round. Parkland looks forward to hosting numerous activities this year to celebrate 100 years of horticulture.! Whether it be Music in the Garden, Back to the Roots Days with our Indigenous friends, workshops, markets or festivals, we will be celebrating atn Parkland Gardens. Like many municipalities across Canada, Red Deer and Red Deer County have both signed the Proclamation to be part of this year-round celebration. Over 70 cities across Canada are now part of this initiative. We’re the first country in the world to designate a YEAR OF THE GARDEN! Parkland started the year with our famous “Year of the Garden Ice Sculptures.” Parkland has had these masterpieces created for 30 years now and we will continue with activities throughout the year.

Tips For Photographing Landscapes With Your Phone

The most challenging part of landscape photography is figuring out how to translate what we see into a picture. It happens to me all the time; I walk through the forest taking a whole mess of photos, and then when I check them out later think to myself, “these just don’t show enough of what I saw.” If you’re finding that photos of a client’s garden don’t seem to show off the beauty of what you see, here are a few tips that might help troubleshoot through this dilemma. These are also the most common smartphone-photography hiccups I’ve come across when going through the collection of photos of the projects being considered for National Awards of Landscape Excellence. 1. Make sure your phone’s camera is on its best settings A brand new cell phone out of the box is usually on its default, middleof-the-road setting.

6 Tips For Photographing Landscapes With Your Phone This means the photos will be a size and quality that’s probably good enough to text to a friend. However, we’ve got award-winning ambitions, and a textable pic ain’t going to cut the mustard! We need to capture photos that are big and detailed enough to show off outstanding work to multiple judges. In the example above, I found the maxed-out settings of my phone when selecting the aspect ratio, 4:3 48MP (megapixels), resulting in photos with substantially better quality and a file size ten times bigger than the default settings. Every phone has its own technical personality to contend with, so what worked for me to max out the settings might not be the same for your phone. Go into your camera’s settings and make sure it’s set to the highest resolution available so that 100% of hardware is in use.

The picture on the left was taken midafternoon during a sunny day, creating dark shadows around much of the plant material. The picture on the right was taken during a cloudy day and, although the trees are still casting some shadows, the lighting is a lot more consistent throughout this landscape, improving visibility of all the plant material and hardscaping.

3. Is it the right time for pictures? The best time for photos is when the sun is just peaking over the horizon in the early morning or late afternoon, or anytime during cloudy overcast conditions. During those three moments, the daylight is diffused, softer, and less likely to create a harsh, contrasty look. Taking pictures in the afternoon might lead to disappointing results as the sun is exceptionally bright, creating too dramatic a lighting difference between the shaded and full sun areas of the garden. Another tip, especially when taking photos of gardens with lots of blooming plant material, is to take the photos in mid-July to early August when most plants are their most established. 4. Compose the photo before taking it, and make minor crop adjustments to refine that composition

2. Clean the lens If your pictures have similar, foggy lighting as above, there’s probably a fingerprint smudging up the lens. A quick wipe with your shirt is enough to remove fingerprints and grease. The fix to this problem doesn’t need to be fancy as smartphone camera lenses are built for wear and tear and are scratch resistant.

6 Tips For Photographing Landscapes With Your Phone Think of every photo as though it’s a grid of nine rectangles. Whatever you consider to be the neatest part of the landscape – and in the case of the above photo at Riverside Park in Guelph, ON, I chose that circular garden in the back – make sure that focal point is located a little to the left or a little to the right of the picture. That’s the only factor I was really paying attention to when taking the above photo, and everything else just seemed to fall right into place, with the pathways and trees leading the viewer’s eye across the photo. I cropped the photo a little bit more to align the interlock path with the bottom-third of the image because I’m fussy like that. Take lots of pictures – try the same photo in different ways. Crouch down, get low to the ground to try a different vantage point, turning the focal point this time to be the complex interlock or a nice collection of shrubs in the foreground. Then try another angle by getting up onto a stepladder or walking up a hill to get high enough to see more of the landscape in the picture. 5. Don’t pinch your screen – zoom in with your feet! A cell phone camera doesn’t have that same zoom capability as certain DSLR lenses or broadcast video

cameras. By pinching out on your screen to zoom in, the picture is being stretched. The above photo would look a whole lot better had I just walked 30 feet closer, instead of zooming in from where I stood, stretching out the pixels, and turning this otherwise decently composed photograph into something distractingly grainy. 6. Tidy up the property Make sure the garden is looking its best by removing weeds and dead foliage from both the plants and the lawn. It’s always a joy when an animal wanders into the frame while taking landscape photos though, so Muffin, my parents’ Havanese puppy, hopefully stays right where she is after I clean up the debris. A collection of quality landscape photos is the essential step to having spectacular work considered when applying to a provincial association’s annual awards program. Wade Hartwell

18 April, 1940 – 25 March, 2022

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Wade Hartwell after a stoic battle with cancer. He left this world as he lived, with love, laughter and encircled by Sharon’s love. Wade was larger than life, a big personality and an even bigger heart. He was eternally curious and young at heart. Wade was born in Rimbey, Alberta, eldest son of Hilldon and Clarice Hartwell. Wade will be greatly missed by his beloved, Sharon Madill, and his children Lance, Nattolie, and Troy (Kaylie) Hartwell, granddaughter Brynn, his greatest delight, and his nieces and nephews. Wade is survived by his sisters: LaVone Hartwell, Kory

(Les) Herron, Donalie (Ted) Murray, Marnie (Bruce) Ahtye, and Laurel Hartwell; and brothers, Don (Trisha) Hartwell and Rob (Victoria) Hartwell. He spent 45 years in the garden nursery business and was the founder of Golden Acre Garden Sentres in Calgary. During his years in business, Wade traveled extensively around the world sourcing plant material for the Calgary climate and cultivating friends at every stop. Wade served as a Cattle Baron for the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede for 35 years, supplying the beautiful greenery for the event. He was an active participant and board member of the Alberta and Canadian Nursery Trades Associations and for three decades, Wade co-hosted Let’s Talk Gardening on Calgary’s QR770 Radio. In association with the City of Calgary Parks, Wade created the BP Birthplace Forest where 50,000 trees were planted. He generously fostered the McInnis & Holloway Memorial forest, which continues to grow. Wade received an honorary degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Olds

College and generously provided scholarships to the College. He was a member of the Calgary Private 100 and was a generous supporter and board member of The Calgary Children’s Foundation. His passion for the last decade was supporting the grade school in Nsongwe Village, Zambia. He built the classrooms and provided equipment for the school’s computer room and home economics classes, and he personally financed a meal for each child every day. He also continued to support many Nsongwe students through university, in addition to contributing to Nsongwe teachers’ salaries. Wade left a legacy of giving to which we can only aspire. Wade’s family would like to extend their great appreciation to the tireless staff in the palliative care unit at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. A celebration of Wade’s life was held July 5th, 2022 in Victoria, BC. There will be celebrations of Wade in Calgary at a later date. In lieu of flowers please plant a tree in Wade’s memory.

Life Member Award Presentation PRESENTED BY NIGEL BOWLES PRESENTED TO WADE IN 2007 (EDITED FOR PRINT)

The Association does not present this award lightly and in the past 20 years only three other people had been honoured with this award prior to Wade. Wade received this award because of his lifelong commitment to the ornamental horticultural industry, which began when he first started work in 1965 at what was to eventually become Golden Acre Garden Sentres. Wade became an active member in the Association shortly after entering into the garden centre business in the mid 1960’s. He was elected to the ANTA Board in the early 70’s and in 1973 and 1974 was the Association’s President. In 1969 Wade became involved in what was then called the Canadian Nursery Trades Association (CNTA) – it is now the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA). In 1979 he became the CNTA’s President. Wade served as the Region 4 Governor of the American Nursery Landscape Association for several years. There is most likely no committee within the history of the Association that Wade had not served on. Wade was also one of the catalysts for establishing a permanent association office and full-time staff.

For over twenty years, Wade has turned his attention to providing support for horticultural training and education, both at Olds College and through the Certification program, CHT. He also shared his horticultural advice with thousands of listeners via the radio show on CHQT Let’s Talk Gardening. But just before we present Wade with the Award, I want to quote what was said about Wade at another presentation a couple of years ago. When asked, “What is a Philanthropist?” the definition that comes to mind is a humanitarian who unselfishly gives to promote human welfare. At Olds College our definition of a philanthropist is Wade Hartwell. Since 1987 no one has matched Wade’s legacy of giving. He has unconditionally supported this college and been one of our greatest benefactors. Wades support for education is unquestioned and is therefore deserving of our recognition. Memoriam Message I joined LANTA in the late seventies which at the time was Landscape Alberta. I went to my first convention and trade show that year in Banff. I had heard about Wade Hartwell and that he was well known in the industry and a member of Landscape Alberta. I wanted to meet him and introduce myself but did not know him. I asked around and was told - look for a guy in a three-piece suit. The third person I found wearing a threepiece suit was Wade. I introduced myself and I felt like a piece of dust on his threepiece suit. That was my first meeting with Wade. He was quite a personality. In the years following, I met him more often and we became acquainted in a different way. I visited him in his garden centre quite regularly to try and sell him plant material. What surprised me was that a lot of plants in the yard had American tags. I asked him about this and he explained that he felt their quality was superior to Canadian plants. I am happy to say that changed over the years and I managed to become a sales rep welcome to his business. GREEN FOR LIFE SUMMER 2022 • 17

What surprised me was that his horticultural knowledge, although substantial, was less than I expected. But his knowledge of places where to find plants and trees, be it BC, Oregon, California or Florida, was phenomenal. He seemed to know everyone. I enjoyed quite a few friendly chats and learned a lot from him. His three-piece suit was his uniform . Rest In Peace Wade. Bill Jansen Wade Hartwell was a builder and supporter of horticulture training at Olds College. He was clear on his expectations of graduates and ready to hire students at all stages of their careers. He saw the Olds College Botanic Garden as pivotal and necessary for learning as an outdoor classroom. He gave where needed, whether it was time in planning or in plant material for the establishment of all three phases of the OCBG and Constructed Wetlands, he was a ready participant. My favourite memory was early on a Saturday morning of the awards event, the first year of the MacEwan/Hartwell Scholarship in Horticulture. The was laughter in the atrium of the Land Sciences Center, as Wade was wheeling, with great speed, Grant around in his wheelchair to visit the greenhouses before the event began. With the average commercial interest rate becoming lower and access to business capital easier, commercial loans are changing the landscape industry for business owners, and here’s why.
