8:40 – 9:40 AM Deciphering the Color Code for More Sales! Christina Salwitz Color options are abundant, but how do we give guidance to help narrow down the choices? Some people live with a patchwork of colors in the landscape, while others “play it safe” with neutral everything. How do we address this in a retail setting when we’re supposed to not only be making sales but also be giving design advice? Learn how to take cues from your customers and turn them into sales by understanding how color effects people and their unconscious choices, to use this information quickly and efficiently.
Designing Sites to Fit Desirable Trees Dr. Ed Gilman You have heard it before: “Plant the right tree in the right place”. Topics include making space for tree roots and tops, traditional urban landscape designs vs. designs that actually work, and why. There will be lots of photographs, illustrations, specifications, and take-home messages.
Biocontrol-based IPM, it’s all about the System Rose Buitenhuis and Nadine Stielow The use of biocontrol in horticultural crops is increasing at a fast pace. However, you can’t just replace pesticides with predators and parasitoids. Biocontrol-based IPM has to consider all factors that cause pest outbreaks, including the crop itself, its surroundings and environmental conditions. This session, presented jointly by a researcher and a grower, will introduce a systematic approach to sustainable pest management combining research results with examples from greenhouse production that can be applied to many other crops.

PERMACULTURE PRACTICES BY JESSI BLOOM
Looking to be a better steward of the land? Start by applying these principles in your space to live in harmony with the environment. We’re all stewards of the land, blessed to be living here, and it’s our critical responsibility to make sure we honor the natural resources that help us live. Permaculture design provides a great toolkit for doing this, and it can also help simplify your life and make your landscape more resilient. Practicing permaculture can be fun and rewarding on many levels.
GREEN FOR LIFE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019 • 32
Though it’s complex and can take years to learn, I’m going to help simplify permaculture for you. First and foremost, permaculture is rooted in ethics, which can act as a filter to help you make decisions:
jumping in headfirst. Select a system you want to work on and choose one element of that system. For example: For your soil fertility or waste system, start by building a compost bin or using a food digester to compost your organic matter.
• Take care of the Earth • Take care of people — starting with yourself! • Share resources and abundance
Stop growing grass and start sowing produce. One of the most efficient techniques to begin with is sheet mulching: Cover your lawn with organic matter and smother it. You can use a variety of materials; I prefer burlap or cardboard with a good 6 inches of mulch piled on top. It may take several months to kill your lawn with this method, but then you can plant in the newly amended bed space. Or, if you don’t want to wait, simply remove your lawn manually.
You can learn from a number of different ecological design principles, creation techniques, and even technical jargon, but I’ll let you save all that for your own adventures in learning permaculture. Here, I’ll focus on some easy ways to get started on your journey.
3. Grow Food
1. Become a Systems Thinker Each one of us depends on many different systems to survive — food, water, energy, and soil fertility, to name a few. It’s important to examine these systems and try to understand the elements that make them work, as well as their connection to our lives, so we can create as many self-sustained, closed-loop systems as possible. We must consider ways to design and build resiliency in these systems — take water, for example. We use it every day, and having access to a clean supply is critical for our survival. We should ask: What are our sources? Do we have a backup source in case of an emergency? How can we design backups for our water supply? How do we make sure we’re only using what we need? You can apply this same line of questioning to soil fertility, food, waste, energy, and even your laundry systems. 2. Start Small Designing a new system can feel overwhelming, so a good permaculture practice is to start small — though the most important thing to do is to get started. Taking small steps means that if you make mistakes — which you will, and that’s the best way to learn! — the consequences will be minimal. If you want to try something new, look for and learn from an experienced mentor before

4. Grow Perennial Food Plants
7. Plant a Food Forest Garden
Annual food plants, such as tomatoes or carrots, are delicious when grown at home. However, they require resources year after year, and you only get one harvest. With perennial plants, you only plant once and then harvest each year! Think of food-bearing trees, shrubs, canes, and groundcovers, and start with those. Begin with what you eat most — maybe you love blueberries or are partial to raspberries. Perhaps you’re keen on perennial vegetables, such as asparagus. Some perennial food plants produce a harvest within their first year, but most will take three to five years to really get established.
A forest has layers of plants that create a stable and resilient ecosystem, which we can mimic in our own gardens. We can also look to a food forest for more than food — it can provide medicine, fodder, fuel, lumber, wildlife habitat, and more. In each climate, the list of plants will look different but will encompass a variety of plants we can grow. For example:
5. Enlist and Nurture Nature’s Allies
Shrubs. You can plant dwarf fruit trees of various sizes, a variety of berry bushes, and cane shrubs, all of which will produce food or provide habitat for wildlife. Currants, blueberries, and chokecherries are some of my favorites.
Trees. The tallest canopy layer of trees can produce fruit or nuts, all while providing shade and potentially even fuel or medicine.
Ecosystems contain a lot of elements that have specific jobs. They all work to keep a balance — plants, animals, insects, soil, and fungi. Some of the best allies, such as pollinators and nitrogen-fixers, are often overlooked when creating a Herbaceous perennials. This layer can include a wide functional garden space. Build Healthy Soil grow your own mushrooms in the shade of your food forest. Healthy soil is the foundation of our gardens and should be a high priority. Learn Vines. However, when we employ animals, we must create a safe environment and system for them to work in. Every animal we invite into our lives can have multiple functions, including land management, food and fiber production, fertility management, and even security. 9. Create Resiliency in Yourself Resiliency is an important aspect of living sustainably. Life can hand us difficulties that we don’t anticipate — financial strains, medical problems, divorce, trauma, and grief. All of these can be hard on us emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Consider what might happen in an emergency of any kind — would you be ready? To continue taking care of the land we live on, we must prioritize and plan for self-care and personal growth. This could include specific routines. One of my favorite ways to stay healthy and centered is strength training and practicing yoga, both of which are great for anyone at any age. Emotional resilience is often overlooked, but it can help us keep calm during the roughest times in our lives. Permaculture embodies the idea that we can live in harmony with the land while it meets our human needs, which is quite achievable in most cases. Every situation is different, though, so there’s no magic formula to follow. Go forth and learn to find the permaculture practices that work best for you. Jessi Bloom is an ecological designer, bestselling author, and homesteader who teaches permaculture nationwide. She authored the books Free-Range Chicken Gardens and Practical Permaculture. The first rule of concrete damage is the saying, “The answer to poor concrete is good concrete.” However, when doing snow and ice control, the service provider has no control over the quality of the concrete surface being cleared; it simply has to be kept ice free. What is good concrete? It is defined as a surface that is resistant to many types of deterioration. There are many factors involved in concrete deterioration, but often it is caused by damaging the cement paste that holds all the ingredients together. This deterioration includes:
Carbonation When concrete is exposed to carbon dioxide (CO2), a chemical reaction takes place producing carbonates and causing shrinkage. This can be good or bad based on the use of the concrete product. Understanding the carbonation process can result in a harder finished product, and one with greater dimensional stability. On the other hand, carbonation causes the pH to drop towards acid, causing corrosion of rebar. Reaction to the CO2 present in the air is generally a slow process and is dependent on humidity, temperature, permeability of the concrete and the amount of CO2 available. Humidity between 50 and 75 per cent is most conducive to carbonation.
Frost/Freezing Action Concrete has pores just like our skin. Pores in concrete are small spaces through which water can pass. The pores proWear vide an access point and let water enter the concrete making Tire chains and studded tires cause wear to concrete surit wet. Basics of Concrete Deterioration Bear in mind that when dealing with organics, they are not all created equal in terms of ice melting performance. There are many claims about the melting performance of each particular one, but be wary. They are all good at corrosion inhibiting to one degree or another because they are organic, but the one you choose may not be high in melting performance just because they said it is. Run some simple tests of the organic material mixed with the pure product and see for yourself if the ice melting performance is really there. Also remember, that many of the organic additives are high in sugar in one form or another. When tested in its concentrated form, it generally will not freeze, but will only get thick. At times this leads to exaggerated claims of a very low freeze point, or even statements like “we couldn’t freeze it”. However, when mixed with a liquid deicer, it does have a freeze point, and don’t be fooled. Here again, run some simple tests on your own to see just what you really have in terms of melting performance and freeze point for the product you are using.

Man vs Machine BY WAYNE BOETTGER
Its not so much man vs. machine as it is the machines compliment the man. With todays staff expectations and current labor and WCB costs, companies need to find ways to take the grunt out of grunt work and reduce injuries. Over the last 10 years, the development of new tools and equipment for landscape and hardscape construction have drastically increased the efficiency of many tasks. While it can be easy sometimes to throw multiple employees on a task, there is often a machine or tool that can increase efficiency by a factor of 2x to 1 or more. The implementation of these tools & equipment has value beyond production and profit. The benefit is in the improvement of employee job satisfaction, reduced injuries resulting in retention and less training of new staff, better punctuality and less sick days. Considering that staff turnover and the difficulty of finding quality employees is the number one challenge in the industry, it’s worth putting time into learning and evaluating which tools will best help your team and your company.
When it comes to where to find these tools, check out Pave Tool and Pave Tech for screed tools, clamps, vacuum lifting, compaction, and a variety of hardscape hand tools. Consider looking into dustless concrete saws from IQ Saws and for materials hauling needs in tight areas check out Muck Truck and PMI Equipment. For elevations and digital measuring look at Lecia geosystems, Spectra Digirod, and Ziplevel. You likely have some incredible teams with great staff but investing in the right tools will make them better and stay longer while increasing your production and profits. Look for ways to “Work smarter, not harder” and make 2020 the best year yet! See Wayne at the 2019 Green Industry Show & Conference, Friday, November 15, 2019 as he shows us the latest “Cool Tools for Hardscaping”. The Landscape Awards Program The Landscape Awards reflect the association’s commitment to creating and preserving the beauty of the urban landscape. The program is also designed to reward independent landscape contracting professionals who execute top quality landscape projects. The Landscape Awards program has four main objectives: 1. Encourage landscape contractors to be the best in their field 2. Provide a marketing opportunity to those companies that receive an award 3. Encourage a company’s employees to aspire to excellence 4. Provide an opportunity to compete in the National Awards of Landscape Excellence Members can enter projects into nine different categories covering construction, maintenance and design. Each entry is evaluated using a set of criteria; the submissions are not judged against each other. There are two award levels: a Merit Award goes to an entry that earns 70-84 points, and an Excellence Award goes to an entry earning 85 or more points. Entries that achieve Excellence status are eligible to be selected for the National Awards of Landscape Excellence, a Canada-wide program developed by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association.
