Update: Humboldt Healing Garden Landscape Alberta & Landscape Saskatchewan have partnered with the City of Humboldt, the Humboldt Hospital Foundation, Communities in Bloom and Scotts Canada to build a “Healing Garden” at the Humboldt Regional Hospital. This garden will not only serve as a place of relaxation and tranquility for those receiving treatment and care at the hospital, but as a memorial for lives lost in the Humboldt Bronco’s tragedy. While the Project Committee was eager to have the project started this fall, we have run into many challenges because of COVID-19. • This year being especially difficult in terms of late start and lost days due to rain, combined with staffing

shortages, and incredible boom of work that has left everyone scrambling to finish work this year • Material shortages (lumber) and inability to source remaining donations because of above reasons With that being said, the project is being post-poned until Spring 2021. The plan in the meantime is to set construction dates and work on securing volunteers and equipment for the Spring. Visit our website for the most up-to-date project information. We have set up an option to make monetary donations to the project. Follow the link to make a contribution: https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/weblink.aspx? name= E345855QE&id= 3

Industry and Association News Our partners in the Snow and Ice Insurance Crisis The crisis facing the snow and ice insurance industry, and more broadly the insurance industry as a whole. The market is hardening, which means higher rates and less access to insurance markets. This especially important for our industry as snow and ice management is under scrutiny. Pre COVID-19 the snow and ice insurance issue was a top priority for your association. How quickly priorities can change. One of Landscape Alberta’s key partners in Marsh Canada, part of the HortProtect insurance program through our national association, the CNLA. With a new program underwriter (insurer) in place, Marsh Canada is well prepared to help industry through these tough times. To ensure Landscape Alberta members are well prepared we encourage everyone to be in touch with their broker as early as possible. Don’t get stuck trying to find new insurance coverage with days to spare until renewal.

Isolated case of DED confirmed in Lethbridge Lethbridge made the announcement yesterday that 2 boulevard elm trees in the City of Lethbridge were tested positive for the Dutch elm disease (DED) fungus. These samples were first tested positive in the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Plant Health Lab and confirmed by additional testing by CFIA. The trees were immediately removed and buried by the City of Lethbridge staff. Lethbridge staff is actively surveying elms trees in the area where the diseased elms were found, checking all the elm bark beetle traps and looking for elm firewood. This is seen as an isolated case at this time. Alberta had one elm in the Town of Wainwright test positive in 1998. This tree was also immediately removed and disposed. Additional monitoring for the beetles, intensive surveillance of the elms and checking for elm firewood was done in the town for 3 years after that incident. All of us need to be vigilant at looking and calling in any DED symptoms keeping in mind at this time of year our trees are shutting down and normally flagging. We also need to boost up our public awareness on DED symptoms (wilting, drooping, curling leaves and then show flagging) not to store or move elm firewood and to abide to the provincial elm pruning ban which is from April 1 to September 30. When the ban is lifted we should be removing all dead branches from our elms since these are perfect habitat for the beetles to breed in.

As always, we would encourage any member to be in touch with Marsh Canada directly to talk about options and for assistance through the application process. For Edmonton & North Alex B. COVID-19 UPDATES Emergency On-farm Support Fund (EOFSF) Following the July 31st Government announcement of additional investments in measures to boost protections for TFW and address COVID-19 Outbreaks on Farms, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is launching a new $35 million Emergency On-Farm Support Fund (EOFSF). The program is intended to support immediate needs related to changes required on farms to ensure the health and safety of domestic and temporary foreign workers due to COVID-19 and limit the spread of the disease on agricultural operations. Discussions are taking place with provinces and territories with the aim of using existing programs as much as possible for the delivery of the EOFSF, with cost-sharing details still being finalized. Recipients will be primary producers. To be eligible for funding, applicants must confirm in writing that all applicable measures of the Quarantine Act are being adhered to, including but not limited to the mandatory 14-day isolation period for TFW. The fund is expected to be retroactive, by as much as several months. The EOFSF will have an end date of March 31, 2021, which means all disbursements must be made by the federal government by that date. AAFC is working hard to finalize the details of the fund’s delivery and the application process will open as soon as possible, with some potential variation in opening dates between provinces and territories. Additional information regarding the program will be shared as soon as it becomes available. Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) The Government of Canada would provide $400 per week for up to 26 weeks, to workers who are self-employed or are not eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) and who still require income support. Industry and Association News Canada Employment Insurance Commission sets 2021 Employment Insurance Premium Rate and Maximum Insurable Earnings The Canada Employment Insurance Commission (CEIC) today set the 2021 Employment Insurance (EI) premium rate at $1.58 per $100 of insurable earnings for employees and $2.21 for employers who pay 1.4 times the employee rate, which is unchanged from the 2020 premium rate. Each year on or before September 14, the CEIC is responsible for setting the annual premium rate based on the seven-year break-even rate forecasted by the EI Senior Actuary. The Senior Actuary’s report on the 2021 EI premium rate and the CEIC’s summary of that report are available online to ensure continued transparency and accountability in the rate-setting process. The Senior Actuary forecasted the seven-year break-even premium rate to be $1.93 per $100 of insurable earnings, an increase of 35 cents. The forecasted increase is mainly attributable to a rise in unemployment resulting from the pandemic, that is the Government of Canada’s response through the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (29 cents) and temporary measures to support transition back to the EI program (6 cents).

$33.18 to $ 889.54 (up $46.46 for employers to $1,245.36 per employee). Furthermore, the Premium Reduction Program (PRP) will provide roughly $1.055 billion in premium reductions in 2021 to registered employers and their employees, shared 7/12 and 5/12 respectively, in recognition of savings generated to the EI program by employer registered short-term wage-loss plans. Finally, for self-employed Canadians who have opted-in to the EI program, the annual earnings required in 2020 will increase to $7,555 for claims filed in 2021. The level of earnings required for self-employed Canadians to be eligible for EI special benefits is indexed annually to the MIE. Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) Sole proprietors and family-owned corporations now qualify for CEBA Extended through to end of October

“As of June 26, 2020, businesses eligible for CEBA now include owneroperated small businesses that do not have a payroll, sole proprietors receiving business income directly, as well as family-owned corporations remunerating in the form of dividends rather than payroll.”

However, as a result of the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada used its authority under the Employment Insurance Act to temporarily limit the change in the premium rate to zero in order to freeze the EI premium rate for 2021 and 2022 at the 2020 level. In addition, the Government of Canada has confirmed to the Commission that it will be crediting the EI Operating Account for the costs related to the Canada Emergency Response Benefit. The CEIC also announced that the Maximum Insurable Earnings (MIE) for 2021 will increase to $ 56,300 from $ 54,200 in 2020. The MIE is indexed on an annual basis and represents the ceiling up to which EI premiums are collected and the maximum amount considered in applications for EI benefits. The maximum annual EI contribution for a worker will increase by

The Government of Canada launched CEBA to ensure that small businesses have access to the capital they need to see them through the current challenges, and better position them to quickly return to providing services to their communities and creating employment. This $55 billion program provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000 to small businesses and not-for-profits. Repaying the balance of the loan on or before December 31, 2022 will result in loan forgiveness of 25 percent (up to $10,000).

As of June 26, 2020, businesses eligible for CEBA now include owner-operated small businesses that do not have a payroll, sole proprietors receiving business income directly, as well as family-owned corporations remunerating in the form of dividends rather than payroll. This means that more small businesses can access it. Applicants without at least $20,000 in payroll in 2019 will have to demonstrate having eligible non-deferrable expenses between $40,000 and $1,500,000 in 2020. All applications are administered through your financial institution. Please visit your institution’s website for more information or the FAQs.

Industry and Association News Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) Update

may also need to register for their own business number if they did not previously have one.

The federal government has launched an updated calculator to help employers estimate what help they may receive from the next phase of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS).

Once the payroll program account (and business number if applicable) is opened, the CRA will require information from the third party to verify that remittances were previously made on behalf of the eligible employer. This would include a listing of each employer the third party made remittances on behalf of, and the remittances that can be attributed to each of those employers from January 1, 2020. The listing should also include the new business number and payroll program account for each eligible employer.

The calculator was made available in August. Employers enter information about their business situation to get an estimate of the subsidy they can expect to receive. Knowing the amount will help companies make informed decisions about retaining or rehiring workers. *** Important to also note, if you have been approved for CEWS in any period, the government will automatically make you eligible for the next period. (Always check with your accountant) Information can be found at the Government’s FAQs page under 3.8 https://www.canada.ca/ en/revenue-agency/services/subsidy/ emergency-wage-subsidy/cewsfrequently-asked-questions.html

The third party can provide this information to the CRA by sending an email to CEWSINFOG@cra-arc.gc.ca. Please note that this mailbox is only used to receive the applicable information from third parties. General enquiries will not be responded to. After the information is received and verified, the CRA will transfer the applicable remittances from the third party to the eligible employer’s new account, and advise when the eligible employer can proceed with their wage subsidy application. Employers will be expected to continue using their new business number and payroll program account for all future payroll remittances. The new CEWS Calculator can be found at https://www.canada.ca/en/ revenue-agency/services/subsidy/emergency-wage-subsidy/ cews-calculate-subsidy-amount.html

3-8. Can an eligible employer that hires a third party to facilitate the administration of its payroll, qualify for the wage subsidy? Updated: August 11, 2020 Yes. However, each eligible employer must make their wage subsidy application for a claim period in the prescribed form and manner. This means that each eligible employer requires their own business number and payroll program account to apply for and receive the wage subsidy. Eligible employers who did not have their own payroll program account with the CRA on or before March 15, 2020, but on March 15, 2020 employed one or more individuals and allowed a third party with a business number to make payroll remittances on their behalf, through the third party’s account, will need to register for their own payroll program account. 5 Top Reasons Your Team Isn’t Engaged

BY JACKIE HART

Without a doubt, one of the best authors on Team Engagement is Patrick Lencioni. He’s written many books on teams: the Five Dysfunctions of a Team, The Ideal Team Player, Three Signs of a Miserable Job among many. His writings are brilliant – and have come full circle. With some written well before we even knew what a Millennial was, and Gen Z were still in diapers – Lencioni’s wisdom and advice wouldn’t be more relevant if he’d written it last month. It’s about the human condition – and I believe the main disconnect lies in the ‘screen-time’ factor of our lives. We’ve forgotten how to connect and value others in a sincere way – let alone at work where there’s targets and deadlines. This month, I’ll be running a full day workshop on “Working Together” at the Ottawa Green Trade Expo. I’ll also be speaking at the conference on the topic of Employee Engagement – so, it’s a topic at the forefront of the minds of many business managers who are looking ahead to a busy spring business season – and spending lots of energy trying to become better employers, recruiters and career providers. So, why do so many company managers struggle with finding, engaging and keeping great team players? I think it boils down to a few key issues – all of which have roots in the generation gap of preferences and communication styles that represent the average company demographic. It all boils down to this: Everyone wants to know that their efforts will make an impact, that they’re valued, and appreciated. It’s important for everyone to know what they’re supposed to be doing at work, what they need to know/learn, when they’ll learn it and how. We all want to go to work every day, set up to succeed. Pretty tough to do if here’s a lack of clarity on what’s expected of them and how their performance will be measured.

To be honest, most employers I know (myself included for many years) really suck at being proactively clear on job responsibilities, desired results and providing constant feedback. And now more than ever, it’s become crucial. Our younger demographic employees just won’t cope well without clarity. They’re digital natives. Information has never been inaccessible to them. Until they hit the workforce. Especially for younger staff (under 25) – they leave the school/college system where they’ve had structured learning and regular feedback (report cards, test scores, essay/project grades) and jump into the work world where it’s kind of like the Wild West. Fend for yourself and find your own way. And they run in the opposite direction – or worse – stay and put in their time wafting along, disengaged and not doing their best, because they don’t feel valued, and don’t care. Here’s 5 key things to consider – If these happen in your business, then engaged employees could well be eluding you: 1. They’re in the wrong position and have been unintentionally set up to fail. With increasingly bigger challenges filling company positions, it’s tempting to put the best person you can find (not the properly trained or experienced one necessarily) into a vacant position. Maybe you’ve taken an employee and promoted them once, or twice...until they reach the level of their own incompetence - it’s call the Peter Principle, and it’s a recipe for disaster. 2. They feel like a commodity - “I’m just a warm body.” One of the great thought-leaders of our time is Simon Sinek. In his recent book Leaders Eat Last, Simon says “Money is a commodity to be managed to help

5 Top Reasons Your Team Isn’t Engaged

“It’s important for everyone to know what they’re supposed to be doing at work, what they need to know/learn, when they’ll learn it and how.” grow your people, not the other way around.” By this he means that you can no longer treat front line or junior employees like worker bees (or worse) who are expendable. The premise is that you expect to make a profit off the back of your underpaid employees - you’re going to have a revolving door in the HR department. You need to invest in your people, grow their skills, give them hope, lift them up -and the company results will follow. They will appreciate being appreciated. They will Step Up. They will engage. Just watch them!

if you had all of these 5 things banished from your company? I think you’d have a Rockstar Team, that’s what I think…. I hope that you agree. See Jackie at GISC 2020 Virtual, November 18-20, 2020. More information and registration at www.greenindustryshow.com.

3. Their work has no meaning to them - Everyone needs to feel proud. Everyday. And when you set people to tasks without having the big picture and understanding what part their own personal effort will play in the over all success - they’ll feel useless and leave. Or just not show up whenever they feel like a mental health day, or sleeping in. You give them no hope, and no relevance. 4. They don’t feel valued or ‘safe’ to learn. If your staff is intimidated, embarrassed, or wrong when they ask questions - say good bye. If they have poor trainer (impatient, condescending, flippant) then they’ll be poorly trained. Which leads to being discouraged, feeling ‘dumb’, inadequate...and who the heck would stick around for that? 5. There is no path to personal success. Again, it’s about creating hope. It starts with a living wage. Not what you think it should be but what they need to be. They’ll ask themselves daily: Why should I stay? What’s in it for ME? Will I succeed here? How and when? If your hiring, on-boarding and training system leaves them unable to answer these questions, whether a new or seasoned employee - then out the door they’ll go. Sooner or later, they’ll leave. So, I’ll leave you with this suggestion: take a look at these five factors, and think about them one by one. Ask your team – what do they experience? Does any of this take place without (or with) you realizing it? Can you engage your team to help you design a better system for information sharing, feedback, job position clarity, career options and continuous improvement? What would be different

What’s My Business Worth BY GRANT HARRISON

Being a landscape business owner is hard. There are a million things vying for your attention, and it’s usually the most urgent that gets it. Meanwhile, your business keeps going – but is it growing? Has it increased in value over the last year? The truth is that most landscape business owners have no idea what their business is worth or how it’s actually doing. They’re usually fantastic technicians, happy to be working IN the business, but rarely ON the business. But knowing the value of your business, and understanding the steps needed to take to increase its value are critical for the growth and health of the business. It will increase profitability now and also make your business more attractive to potential buyers – whether you’re looking at selling now or in the future. Let’s take a look at six pillars of business and identify some best practices and tools you can implement fairly easily to increase efficiency, productivity and profit.

Safety The health and safety of your staff is your greatest priority. A Health and Safety Committee should be actively engaged in your business and their recommendations should be taken seriously. Ensuring your staff are trained in the areas of health and safety is an easy way to eliminate potential hazards. Tools: For safety training, we recommend Greenius. Greenius provides online training courses, covering every aspect of your landscaping business, including equipment and safety training. It provides consistent training and messaging to your employees, ensuring that everyone is learning the same thing the same way. Staff Hiring well is critical to business success. It’s important to hire based on your company’s core values, not based solely

What’s My Business Worth on a need for a spot to be filled. Providing employee orientation and an onboarding plan is extremely helpful to the employee and to the organization. It ensures that everyone is aware of the job duties, expectations, company culture, training schedule and organizational structure. It sets an employee up for success right from the start. Additionally, providing regular communication to your employees keeps everyone on the same page, creates confidence in your employees, and gives you control over your company’s messaging. Consider a monthly townhall meeting, a quarterly newsletter, a one-day kick-off each spring and fall to help build company culture and show your appreciation to your staff. Happy staff are integral to company success. Tools: We see great value in personality profiles for your staff, especially senior management. There are a number of testing programs that can be taken online - Winslow, TTI Success Insights, DiSC Profiles. GrowTheBench.com provides online education programs to help your staff grow and develop in their role. Customers Just as you use an onboarding program for employees, consider using an onboarding program for clients. In the same way that it provides clarity for your employees, it will do the same for your clients. You can communicate how the job process works, the payment schedule, how any delays are handled, who to contact if there’s an issue, etc. It puts clients at ease because they know what to expect and this builds their confidence in your company. Communication with clients is key. If there’s one complaint we hear regularly about contractors, it’s that we’re famous for not communicating with our customers. Set your business apart by providing proactive communication to your clients. For example, if you’re operating a snow business, send an email to your clients to let them know when snow or ice are expected in the forecast and when you expect to start clearing snow. Send them a weekly report that indicates when you were on site and what service(s) you performed. For landscape design/build customers, contact them if you’re going to be late to the site, if you’re not able to be at the site due to the weather and during the job, send them a daily update to let them know what you’ve been doing. There really is no such thing as overcommunication when it comes to customers. Tools: Email is probably the most effective tool in communicating with your customers, but programs like Constant Contact can be very useful, as can text messaging. Financials A lot of landscapers will stop reading here, simply because they saw the word “financials”. This is generally because they feel they don’t have a strong understanding of their financials nor the time to put into understanding. But learning how to

create a budget, review budget to actuals and read financial reports is imperative to understanding your business and where changes can be made to increase profit and efficiency. Tools: There are many options available to help with the bookkeeping and financial tracking aspects of your business. We recommend programs like Landscape Management Network, Aspire or BOSS. These will help you with budget creation, cash flow projections and profit and loss reports, among many other functions. Operations Determining some best practices for operations is one of the quickest ways to affect the efficiency and profitability for your business. Consider standardizing processes and equipment throughout the company and creating an operational manual. There are plenty of programs and apps that can assist with this area of business. In order to track your progress, it’s important to have key performance indicators identified for each division. Measurements like hours vs. budget, fleet costs, measurement of quality of work being completed and gross margin on each job are key. Tools: Harnessing technology for your business is an easy and effective way to increase productivity. We recommend programs like Landscape Management Network, Microsoft Office Planner, Tom’s Planner and Fleetio, but depending on your needs there are many other programs available. Leadership Creating a regular meeting rhythm is one of the quickest and easiest ways to start building cohesion in your leadership team. Scheduling regular SWOT meetings and strategic plans will keep everyone informed, create consensus and accountability. Sharing your leadership’s vision and core values with your staff will help to create “ownership thinking” from the staff. Tools: Hiring a consultant with experience in a program like Traction is invaluable. A consultant will help you with establishing a regular meeting rhythm, keeping your meetings focused and running smoothly, and helping you identify priorities. This has just been a very brief overview of way to increase the profitability and efficiency of your business. We have created a workshop that addresses these issues in greater detail, in one-hour, one-day and two-day formats. If you would like information on any of these options, please go to www.nextraconsulting.ca and click on “What’s My Business Worth” in the navigation bar. Covid – Keep Calm and Carry On BY JUDY CROON

Recently, I read a terrific book – Humankind by Rutger Bregman. Bregman asked, ‘What did Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt have in common?’ They all read a book called The Psychology of the Masses by French author Gustave Le Bon. Le Bon’s main premise is that when all hell breaks loose, humans turn into barbarians. We turn on each other. Chaos is created and as a result, an enemy’s attack is made easier. The flames of fear are good for the oppressor. Though this ‘survival- of- the- fittest’ mentality may be the case for a small percentage of people, Bregman gives

numerous examples throughout history that prove the contrary. His stories and statistics prove that overall, the kids are alright – humans are pretty darn amazing. Bregman provides the example of the bombing of England during the second World War. In 1940, Hitler sent 348 Luftwaffe bombers to London. He probably hoped panic and chaos would make the English more vulnerable and easier to overthrow. British authorities worried as well. In anticipation of the panic that war with Germany would create, British authorities built emergency psychiatric wards throughout the country. Yes, as expected, the bombings were horrific. London alone suffered 40,000 casualties.

Covid – Keep Calm and Carry On However, the psychiatric wards for the most part remained empty. Churchill encouraged the Brits to ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’. The English tried to live their lives as normally as possible. The trains continued to run. People shopped. Kids played. In fact, some people reported feeling psychologically better off than before the bombings started. Suicide rates were down and alcohol abuse decreased. Why this ‘strange’ reaction in the face of death and fear? As it turned out, average civilians helped each other like they never had before. Hitler’s bombs had the opposite effect – they brought people closer together. Chaos was replaced with camaraderie. Similarly, Bregman describes how so many ‘hardened’ New Yorkers risked their lives to save strangers during that horrific morning of Sept 11th, 2001. Throughout the ages, contrary to what warlords, dictators and autocrats have and continue to hope for, the worst actually brings out the best in most of us. It is instinctive to choose good. It is safer to be with the clan than against it. If you need further proof, consider these statistics. According to 700 separate field studies at The Disaster Research Centre in Delaware, the number of murders, thefts and rapes actually decrease in the wake of catastrophe. So why do we always think the sky is falling? Fear sells. Left- and right-wing media giants are both guilty. Bad news is big business. So, what should we do as we face our recent global ‘attack‘, Covid 19? Perhaps we should continue to exercise caution, listen to the scientists and, every now and then (and trust me, I’m guilty of this too), turn off CNN. Bye- bye Anderson Cooper. Keep Calm and Carry On and hey, it doesn’t hurt to crack a smile every now and then. Until next time, laugh long and prosper. Catch Judy Croon at GISC 2020 Virtual, Wednesday, November 18, 2020. Garden Media Group’s 2021 Garden Trends to be Presented at GISC Explore the Future of Gardening Post-COVID-19 BY KATIE DUBOW

For 20 years, Garden Media Group has looked into the crystal ball for future trends. And this year is no different. The firm’s 2021 Garden Trends Report, The Great Reset, offers a peek into what will be trending in horticulture in 2021 and beyond. Catch Katie Dubow, president of the trendspotting firm, present these trends Friday, November 20, 2020 at GISC Virtual. How the world will change post-COVID-19 remains to be seen. But Dubow says one thing is for sure: We are in the middle of A Great Reset. “I have seen a lot of positive responses from businesses during the shutdown, and they all have one common thread: Ctrl Alt Delete,” said Dubow. “This Great Reset is the biggest opportunity our industry has been given to reboot, recharge, and rebuild. What are you going to do with it?” Here is a snapshot of a few of the trends that will shape the future for the garden industry, according to Garden Media Group.

Garden Media Group’s 2021 Garden Trends

Improv Era The world watched as businesses shifted their supply chain from in-store to delivery and curbside pickup. To continue to succeed, these pivots need to happen more frequently and efficiently. “Don’t keep to the status quo by repeating what you’ve been doing,” said Dubow. Backyard Aficionado According to a new survey, the industry picked up between 16-24 million new gardeners during COVID-19, many under 35 years old. The survey also stated that the 35-44-year age bracket had the highest mean spending, $608, of all the age groups in 2019. Many in this group are raising a family, own a home, and have an established career. However, Dubow says that these new customers will not stay unless the industry can find a way to entice them. How: find out November 20 at 9:30 MT. Design Abundance This trend spots a dynamic shift in the industry that will lead to greener societies and a return to nature. Customer will

want their backyards to be filled less with mulch and plants for simple decoration to backyards that co-create with nature. Gardens are more than a human space because they are also an ecologically functional space, she said. In addition to designing beneficial landscapes, people want to put the FUN in functional.

“Don’t keep to the status quo by repeating what you’ve been doing.”

Turn Out the Lights According to ‘Nature’s Best Hope,’ the new book from Doug Tallamy, a conservation hardscape should be a priority for all. The number one way to achieve that is to turn out the lights.

“Did you know that lighting up the sky at night is one of the major causes of insect decline?” Dubow asked. “White light draws insects in all night long, exhausting them, making them easy prey for bats and birds.” Learn more about these trends from Katie Dubow Friday, November 20, 2020 at 9:30 MT.
