A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
What an exciting spring! The Canadian Landscape Standards (CLS) have been released - there is a link under Industry News on how to order your own copy. Landscape Standards mean that landscape professionals will all be on the same page when deciding the right way to design or build landscapes in Canada. This raises the level of professionalism and accountability for our sector. Let your insurance broker and your local municipality know about CLS so that everyone can be on the same page. Climate change or just an early spring? I could hardly believe my eyes, when I discovered a pussy willow covered in grey pussy toes on February 27. I have not found any other plants busting out in buds yet, thank goodness.
I recently attended Green Cities Landscape Summit in Vancouver. The take away I got from this event is that we are all responsible for getting one message to all levels of government, and that message is that “Getting Green Right” MUST include plants. Installing energy efficient light bulbs is great for the environment but we need more green plant canopy to make a long-term change. Plants are the only thing on earth that can sequester carbon naturally. The need to get more plants into our landscape designs/installations is important, and make sure to tell your customers why they need more plants in their yards. Here are a few suggestions: Trees that give shade can save customers money by shading their house in the summer, and hedges can provide a wind break to their yard. So many uses for plants that add value to customer’s homes. While adding value to a home, the plants will also give back fresh air and help reverse climate change.
The Landscape Saskatchewan AGM was held on March 17 in Regina. We had Arnold Heuver present on pruning trends; it was very informative and I now have some new ideas to teach my staff this spring. The afternoon was a very inspirational social media presentation by Mike and Joe from #Lakeridgebrigade. You can see Landscape Saskatchewan’s first YouTube video at youtu.be/GjaflC9beuQ. Have a wonderfully busy spring and get tweeting!

The national CLS Steering Committee will remain in place to develop new sections and continually revise and update the document to ensure its accuracy and relevance. The CLS was designed for use by anyone who specifies scopes or bids on landscape work, including landscape architects, landscape designers, landscape contractors, grounds maintenance contractors and government procurement parks departments at all levels. As a benchmark standard for the landscape horticulture industry, the CLS will be an indispensable tool to the success of any landscape project that is designed, built and maintained to this nationally-recognized standard.

2015 LANDSCAPE AWARDS
The Landscape Awards reflect the association's commitment to creating and preserving the beauty of the urban landscape. The program is also designed to reward independent landscape contracting professionals who execute top quality landscape projects. The Landscape Awards program has four main objectives: • Encourage landscape contractors to be the best in their field • Provide a marketing opportunity to those companies that receive an award • Encourage a company’s employees to aspire to excellence • Provide an opportunity to compete in the National Awards of Landscape Excellence
Members can enter projects into nine different categories covering construction, maintenance and design. Each entry is evaluated using a set of criteria; the submissions are not judged against each other. There are two award levels: a Merit Award goes to an entry that earns 70-84 points, and an Excellence Award goes to an entry earning 85 or more points. Entries that achieve Excellence status are eligible to be selected for the National Awards of Landscape Excellence, a Canada-wide program developed by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association.
