Industry and Association News...

TFWP under increased scrutiny With the previously reported changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) starting to take effect, Landscape Alberta would like to remind members to ensure that you are actively involved in finding workable solutions for your business. •

• • •

New Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) replaces the former LMO process. The fee for each application has increased to $1000 from $275. This process will be more rigorous and will require employers to include the number of Canadians that applied for the job and an explanation for why they were not hired. A scheduled movement towards a 10% cap on the proportion of an employer’s workforce that can consist of low-wage TFWs (by 2016). Employers with fewer than 10 employees will be exempt. Applications will now be divided into low-skilled and high-skilled categories based on average wage rate and not NOC codes. Maximum duration for a TFW to work in Canada is being reduced from four years to two years. The Seasonal Agriculture Worker Program (SAWP) is exempt from the cap, reduced timelines, and higher fee. Increased number of inspections: one in four employers using the TFWP will be audited by Integrity Services each year.

With the increased level of inspections, it is important to ensure that employers are 100% compliant with the TFWP regulations, as well as local labour standards. For example, this includes reviewing records around overtime and holiday pay, because being non-compliant with these provincial labour standards is grounds for removal and blacklisting from the TFWP.

Landscape Alberta is working with the CNLA and other like-minded industry groups to advocate for friendlier terms and conditions for Alberta and Saskatchewan users of the TFWP program, and for increased recognition of the unique challenges of seasonality in our industry. It is more important than ever that members collect data on applications, vacancies, length of employment, etc., not only for their own LMIA applications, but to share with Landscape Alberta and thus the government, as evidence of the acute labour shortage our industry faces. Updated Foreign Worker Manuals are available at www.landscape-alberta.com (members only section). Canadian Government Introduces Small Business Job Credit On September 11, 2014, Minister of Finance Joe Oliver announced the introduction of the new Small Business Job Credit, which is expected to save small businesses more than $550 million over the next two years.

32 I Green for Life November/December 2014

The Small Business Job Credit will effectively lower small businesses’ Employment Insurance (EI) premiums from the current legislated rate of $1.88 to $1.60 per $100 of insurable earnings in 2015 and 2016. Any firm that pays employer EI premiums equal to or less than $15,000 in those years will be eligible for the credit. Almost 90% of all EI premium-paying businesses in Canada will receive the credit, reducing their EI payroll taxes by nearly 15%.

The Canada Revenue Agency will automatically calculate the credit on a business’ return, ensuring no new paper burden will be imposed on business owners. The EI cuts will take effect January 1, 2015 and remain in effect through 2016. Oliver also touted the Harper government’s decision to impose a seven-year, break-even rate-setting mechanism on EI in 2017. This will mean that EI premiums will be no higher than needed to pay for the EI program and should lower premiums for all employers and employees.

Access to Wage Data Here is your chance to contribute to an important new web tool that will allow you to access relevant wage information. CNLA is partnering with the provincial associations to collect wage rate data to provide industrydriven Labour Market Information (LMI) to employers, employees, our provincial associations, educators and government agencies. This information will be instrumental to all sectors – growers, landscape and tree care contractors, and retail garden centres. You may be called upon in the next few months for your input, so thank you in advance for your assistance.

Root For Trees on National Tree Day The City of Edmonton held a special planting and education event to mark National Tree Day 2014 in Sir Wilfred Laurier Park on Sunday, September 21. Landscape Alberta was proud to take part in this fun event and provided copies of our very popular Trees and Shrubs for the Prairies publication for the many families who volunteered to dig in hundreds of new plantings in the park.

The city’s Root for Trees program engages citizens of all ages to help plant native tree and shrub species as part of an initiative to double the size of our urban forest. The program works with corporations, community groups, and individual residents – anyone who shares the vision of a greener Edmonton. Looking for a meaningful teambuilding event or a memorable family project? Visit the Root for Trees website to learn how you can participate: http://bit.ly/1tbIPHk.

to an employer. They are also proposing to penalize employers even if their failure to comply was unintentional - for example, an accounting error that results in a TFW being underpaid. The government says they'll want to start assessing the circumstances surrounding a company's non-compliance when determining the amount of the fine or the length of the ban "so there is still an incentive for the employer to take corrective action." Reports are showing that applications year over year were down 74% for August.

What is Landscape Alberta doing? Landscape Alberta is working to effect changes to the TFWP policy to benefit our sector. This includes requests for an exemption from the maximum percentage of workers, a guarantee for work visas on approved LMIAs, an extension to current work visas, changes to the LMIA process that would allow re-submission without penalty to employers. Landscape Alberta is also advocating for the creation of a seasonal workers program for our sector, as many government initiatives are simply not effective for recruiting low-skill seasonal positions that are needed by our industry.

How can you help? We have been asking members to go back and look at their labour records for the last few months and start to track hiring statistics within their company. Each month, a new Hiring Statistics Poll will be released for you to fill in. With this data we hope to illustrate the ongoing need for workers, as well as any hiring trends, and use this data in discussions with federal and provincial governments. Tougher Penalties for Violators of TFW Regulations The federal government is considering lifetime bans and heftier fines on employers found to have violated its new regulations on temporary foreign workers (TFW).

The government is proposing permanent bans in addition to expanding penalties to include one-, five- and ten-year moratoriums that would forbid businesses from applying for TFWs. The length of the ban would depend on the type of violation, the employer's history of compliance, the severity of the violation and the size of the business. The names of the banned employers would be made public. The government is also proposing minimum fines of $500 to a maximum of $100,000 for serious violations - in particular those that have resulted in a significant financial benefit

The Price has to be Right

By Bill McCurry

We are privileged to work in an industry where our products bring health and happiness to our customers. But it’s not all a bed of roses. There are challenges. To begin with, too many of our colleagues are simply in the weeds when it comes to pricing decisions.

Determining prices by outdated methods and keeping them fixed while your costs climb will lead to inevitable disaster. Your customers, employees and suppliers will then forever be denied the ability to express their support for you. Action needs to be taken.

One brave retailer decided to raise her prices on selected products. That started a fight with a long-term employee and a relative, who both angrily insisted customers wouldn’t pay more. The retailer knew her back was to the wall and the company The universal conventional wisdom is: Know wouldn’t survive the winter without raising prices. She raised her prices and fired the your costs as the first step to setting your two who disagreed with her. price. That’s wrong! In today’s economy, more factors need to be considered. The Her business saw an increase in productivity and substantially higher sales. She tracked conventional wisdom will compromise your the average sale-per-transaction and it rose more than her price increases. She also negotiation skills if you paid substantially less told me that without the negative personalities, her workers were invigorated and a than your competitors. Conventional wisdom better sales environment resulted. Her season turned out fantastically. She had more makes your selling price substantially below than enough cash to carry her through the winter. what the market will support because it’s based on the lower cost that you negotiated. Breaking from conventional pricing approaches and the courage to adopt fresh This allows your vendor to indirectly control marketing strategies are critical to success. Let’s evaluate steps you should take when your selling prices - and erode your company’s pricing. sustainability.

Our industry’s adherence to the old-time attitude that when growers set prices at the start of the year they must keep them fixed for the entire year, is flawed. Holding a price that forces you to lose cash money is surrendering your business’s viability to oldtime attitudes. Many consumer goods have weekly price changes. It’s scary, but important to be on top of what prices need adjusting, both up and down.

We have seen unprecedented increases in the costs of doing business: diesel fuel, energy to heat the greenhouse and garden centre, insurance, fertilizer, plastic pots. The list goes on. Today’s economic climate requires fresh approaches to these increases.

Let your customers vote on whether or not you should go bankrupt. Companies cease to exist because not enough customers give them adequate cash to pay their expenses. You must be adjusting your selling prices so that when you sell through your budgeted sales, you will have a respectable profit at the end of the year. Darwin was right. Those that adapt can succeed, while those who do not change will perish.

Identify the significant volume products with high price sensitivity. You have to be competitive on some products, but not everything you sell. Price the sensitive items how/where your market positioning requires. Establish your best guess for each product’s market value based on how you’ll sell it and its customer-retention value. Be creative. Is a hanging basket three times the price when it’s planted in a woven birdhouse? How can your product be worth a higher price? Determine your costs. Evaluate whether the margin on each item will be above/below your targeted amount. If the margin is insufficient, it can be fatal to talk yourself into selling that product by simply raising the price. You need to add value to the product. Don’t fall in love with any merchandise. Assuming your margin goals are attainable, start turning merchandise into margin dollars. If sales are below target, don’t talk yourself into higher prices unless you are certain the market can support it and that you’re doing something more than you were before to generate momentum. Instead, shift your product mix. Find products you can sell for higher margin and drop lower margin products that are not critical to your success.

As for marketing strategies—action is needed! Recovering retailers have told me “action staves off depression.” I interviewed one landscaper who had his best year ever. Whenever a crew wasn’t on a job, they redid the frontage of their building. Motorists saw the activity—including his sign with his name and phone number in foot-high letters—and called to ask about his services. Another garden center

decided to hold fairy garden classes. They virtually sold out their stock of fairy garden merchandise while entertaining first-time customers.

“Those that adapt can succeed, while those who do not change will perish.”

What about the garden center that did a grow-off with their plants versus plants from a big-box store? What about cooking classes and contests using herbs grown by customers, with proceeds going to a food bank? All of these organizations did something. They didn’t just run ads with cut-rate petunias for a penny. They made things happen. When the existence of your business is threatened, you must reassess your approach and consider raising your prices to cover your costs while adding value to your products.

Your customers should be allowed to decide whether you survive or die. You’ll most likely live to thrive, as many customers are not as price conscious as we think. Of course, there’s only one way to find out: Price your product to allow yourself a respectable and sustainable profit. The projecct aims to promote the use of integrated pest management and stimulate continuous improvement of growers’ crop protection practices in Alberta. The project is developing new IPM tools and best practices guidelines for IPM. There are four project activities that require greenhouse grower participation for empowerment, partnership, interaction, consultation and information. 1. Baseline survey on the greenhouse operator’s IPM knowledge, attitudes, satisfaction and aspirations – if you haven’t already done so, you can complete a survey at ARD’s booth 2. Validation of economic injury levels of commercial greenhouses - collaborating greenhouses will be shown how to incorporate IPM concepts and methods into greenhouse pest control. 3. Measurement of benefits - collaborating greenhouses will set aside one bay/section of the green nho house for the study where Project IPM recommendations will be practiced by the grower. Gathering data will allow measureement of the costs and ben e efits associated with the current situation (no IPM) and the IPM. 4. IPM training for growers

Landscape Alberta Innovators Histree makes it in the Big Apple

Planting one million trees is an ambitious goal, but that’s exactly what the City of New York is doing. MillionTreesNYC is a city-wide, public-private initiative with a goal to plant and care for one million new trees across New York City over the next decade.

One million trees will increase the urban forest – including street trees, park trees, and trees on public, private and commercial property – by 20%. The City of New York will plant 70% of the trees in parks and other public spaces, with the remaining 30% coming from private organizations, homeowners and community groups. MillionTreesNYC is well on its way to reaching its goal with over 900,000 trees already planted.

pre-sales conversation, I traveled to NYC to meet with the parks administration staff in person and pulled the tag from my bag (yes, I saved it). They were very amused and quite impressed with the vision I had five years earlier. They were equally pleased and intrigued that the Histree product was developed by Wilco, a tree planting contractor, thus bringing a whole new perspective to the issues they were having with their contractors.

So how did we become a part of this project? Through a simple online search - the City of New York Parks Department found us via a web search for tree data management. We attribute our successes on the ability of our clients to find us based on our online marketing efforts. This includes a very informative and robust website, a strong focus on search engine optimization and primarily our name, Histree. The name chosen for

The MillionTreesNYC initiative now has an Alberta connection. Landscape Alberta member, Histree Inc., has recently partnered with the New York City Parks Department who will be using the Histree software to track and manage all trees that are planted through the MillionTreesNYC initiative, starting with the 2015 planting season. Histree is a part of Nektar Data Systems and Wilco NW. We spoke with Art Maat, President, CEO and Founder of Histree about his involvement in the MillionTreesNYC initiative.

Landscape Alberta: How did Histree come to be part of the MillionTreesNYC initiative? Art Maat: First, let me tell you a story. Five years ago on a shopping junket to Macy's in midtown Manhattan, when the concept of the Histree software was in its infancy, I observed some typical tree tags that cities use, installed on some recently planted street trees. The words 'New York Parks Department' with a serial number and 'Fall 2009' were printed on the tags. They were obviously being used as tree ID tags for some sort of tracking. I promptly pulled the tag off the tree and said to myself that one day I would be talking to New York City about my then conceptual tree management system.

Early this spring, I received an inquiry email about Histree from the NYC parks staff. I actually had to get up from my desk and do a quick lap around the office to be able to take in the impact that this relationship could have for our company. About a month after our

LA: Explain how the Histree system works. AM: We provide visual ID tags that function in identifying each tree as a unique database item. The typical tag form factor we use is about 50 mm x 25 mm which has a 2D data matrix (DM) code printed on one side. The code looks a lot like a boarding pass code used in the airline industry. The tag's identity is never repeated and is used to ID the tree in our secure, cloud-hosted database. Our mobile software platform uses the scanned tag ID to move individual tree data to or pull data from the cloud database. This data can be anything from a tree maintenance event at a nursery, like pruning or watering, or a tree inspection by a municipal inspector.

For the NYC contract, side one of a larger custom designed ta, is where the Histree functional DM code is placed, and will initially be used by the planting and maintenance contractors to record and archive the planting and maintenance events of a tree. This code will also be used by the city administration and inspection staff to record the results of all inspection activities for a particular tree while it is under warranty and maintenance with the contractor.

LA: There is also a second side to the tag with a QR code that the general public can scan. What happens when the tag is scanned by a member of the public? AM: Initially, when a member of the public scans the QR code, it will take them to a public service website hosted by the New York City Parks Department explaining the MillionTreesNYC initiative and the city’s quest to plant one million trees within the city boundaries.

Once the contractor has completed the maintenance and warranty period, the Histree functional side of the tags will serve a second purpose to the public. As these trees are all planted in mature neighbourhoods, and for the most part are an addition to the well-being of established communities, the public will be encouraged to personally adopt the trees one at a time. The public will use a limited and customized version of the Histree app to register and take “ownership” of the trees in their local parks and streets. They will be able to record their own activities of care and maintenance and also create a personalized relationship with the tree with the appending of personal pictures and dedications for their adopted trees. This is currently in planning stages and will not take place for at least two years when the trees are off warranty.

LA: How will the tags help New York City parks contractors maintain the trees?

• Hardy Trees for the Prairies • Picker & Semi Trucks for Local and Long Distance Deliveries • Large Caliper Conifer, Shade & Fruit Trees

AM: The contractors will use their smartphone or tablet and the Histree app to record all of the maintenance activities for each tree. A date and time stamp, as well as a GPS location is recorded for each maintenance event. This verifies maintenance requirements as per contract specifications. The City will then use the tree data event reports to confirm work was completed as per the watering schedule. This will assist them when processing payment for work completed and helps to create a process of accountability for the contractors.

The contractors will also use the Histree web interface to plan and route their water trucks for planned daily watering. This routing and scheduling is based on previous maintenance events and scheduling requirements. The customized HisTREE.net/MapQuest interface will provide the contractors with turn by turn functionality to all trees on a route. This includes real-time adjustments for daily traffic flows, road construction and contractor geographic grouping requirements based on the selected trees. This will be a very useful feature in a city like New York, where sending out your water truck to new locations every day could be a logistical nightmare.

LA: When will these tags be ready for use with the MillionTreesNYC initiative? AM: We have now finished a successful pilot which ran during the 2014 growing season. Currently, NYC Parks staff and Histree administration personnel are finalizing specifications for the 2015 planting contracts. The use of the Histree program will be a mandatory part of the planting and maintenance specifications. We have delivered the custom tag proofs and will begin manufacturing the tags as soon as required. The MillionTreesNYC initiative will consume approximately 25,000 tags per year.

The Histree product, first released in 2010, was our first software product. It is a spinoff of our internal tree management operations at Wilco Contractors NW Inc., where we tracked trees planted in contract with various municipalities. The initial functionality was to track the sites our trees were planted on and to track maintenance events. This was in an effort to establish quality control procedures as well as for traceability processes related to supplier survival rates, etc.

Our technology can be used by any city, municipality, contractor or nursery regardless of size and the number of trees. The City of Fort Saskatchewan is currently using Histree to create a complete tree inventory of all trees on municipal land. We have a bid in with the City of Manila in the Philippines and are in talks with the Colorado Department of Agriculture to develop a way to quarantine and track Ash trees infested with Emerald Ash Borer. Several nurseries, including a handful in Alberta, also use the Histree product to manage operations within their nurseries. This includes processes that fulfill Clean Plants (CNCI) documentation requirements.

Are You a Fierce Competitor? By Ed Laflamme, The Harvest Group

The opposite of fierce is complacent. In my travels throughout the country I find few landscape contractors are truly fierce competitors. Most owners work very hard and put in an enormous number of hours, but that doesn’t make them fierce competitors. But that’s okay. I have always thought that if you play the landscape game a little smarter and with a little more gusto, it’s a lot more fun and profitable.

Below are the 10 qualities of fierce competitors that my partner Bill Arman and I have observed over the years. These companies, because of their fierceness, are highly profitable and successful. If you follow these practices in your company, they may help you become “A Fierce Competitor” in your business, as well.

1. They’re Not Complacent Fierce competitors are not complacent. They tirelessly search out ways to make every aspect of their business better. Most noticeably – their people. There is no dead wood. If employees are not pulling their weight they will be quickly pruned out. These companies create training programs to improve employee knowledge and skill, send them to seminars and conventions and expect them to continuously improve. Because of this, their people respect these owners. 2. They Plan You can’t be a fierce competitor if you don’t plan. Have you

42 I Green for Life November/December 2014

heard the saying, “If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?” In my book, Green Side Up, the chapter on planning suggests that you follow what I call the 1% Rule: Spend 1% of your time planning the other 99%. Make sense?

3. They Measure Everything It is essential to measure and track everything. Operate your business like you are playing a game. You wouldn’t watch a baseball or football game if they didn’t keep score. Yet many business owners play the game without knowing what the score is.

Here are a few items you should measure: • How many hours every job takes compared to the estimate • Your company’s financial position with monthly profit/loss statements • How much your crews are generating in dollars per hour • What your gross margins are by crew, department & total company

4. They hold people accountable Fierce competitors hold their people accountable. They delegate tasks, explain what needs to be done, then hold people accountable.

5. They Are Hard Drivers Fierce competitors have drive, and they drive hard. They work hard and play hard. At work they set the pace - they make their time count. They also set priorities to accomplish the most important things each day. They not only take care of the urgent things, but carve out time to get the important things done.

6. They Lead Their People Fierce competitors lead and give their people direction. Their people have job descriptions, performance reviews and know what is expected of them. A great example is Herb Kelleher, former president of Southwest Airlines. Jody Gittell wrote about Mr. Kelleher’s incredible success in her book, The Southwest Airlines Way, Using the Power of Relationships to Achieve High Performance. The employees of Southwest love Herb because of his positive spirit and “can do” attitude, and that’s why they became one of the most profitable airlines in history. Great leaders give people a vision of success and then help them achieve it.

7. They Are Fanatical About Selling They say that nothing happens without a sale and this is true. They know that in order to build a business you need a sales “machine”. If you’re the rainmaker, great. Otherwise hire one or nothing is going to happen. Focus on profitable growth - there’s nothing like that to energize a company.

8. They Insist on Quality When the quality revolution began in the US in the 1980s, I purchased Phillip Crosby’s book, Quality is Free. His concept was quality doesn’t cost more and that has proved to be true. Quality is expected in 2014 and fierce competitors expect their organizations to provide high quality service with little or no extra cost and excuses.

9. They’re Fierce but Easy to Do Business With Many owners believe their company is easy to do business with, but how do they know for sure? Hold customer focus groups, send out surveys and examine every customer touch-point to determine just how easy it is to do business with you. Companies that are easy to do business with retain their clients. Fierce competitors are really easy to do business with – are you?

10. They Execute! Last but equally important – fierce competitors execute! They make things happen. I recommend reading the excellent book written by Larry Bossidy, Execution, the Discipline of Getting Things Done. Mr. Bossidy was one of my clients and former Vice Chairman and Executive Officer of General Electric. This is one of those must-read books that will help every businessperson understand how important it is to execute.

Examine your company in the light of the practices listed above think about how much more fun you could have, and how much more money you could make if you were a Fierce Competitor!

50 Years of Horticulture at Olds College

By Kelly Storm 2014 is a special year for Olds College and the horticulture industry. It commemorates 50 years since the first horticulture programming was offered at the college.

In 1959, informal discussions were underway with the University of Alberta and industry representatives about the need for skilled assistants in the horticulture industry. A two year general diploma was eventually recommended, curriculum was developed, and Olds College was chosen to run the very first horticulture program in Western Canada.

Prior to this, horticulture studies had been taught to every agriculture and home economics student since Olds College opened in 1913. Indeed, growing a garden, canning and preserving in those days was a necessary part of life, but by the 1960’s, Alberta’s horticulture industry was expanding and becoming more specialized, producing many ornamental and food crops. Parks, municipalities and commercial landscapers were servicing an ever growing demand for professionally managed landscapes.

In the fall of 1963, B.J. (Buck) Godwin arrived from Vermillion School (now Lakeland College) to teach twelve hand-selected horticulture students. Buck arrived a mere two days before the students and was only on loan to Olds College. Eventually, the principal of Vermillion School released him to stay on at Olds full-time.

Buck described the program as, “a personal, practical education with a balance of academic theory and day-to-day hands-on experience”. This philosophy stands true 50 years later!

increased to 20 first-year students. A decade later, Horticulture was producing more graduates than any other department on campus. The burgeoning industry scooped up all the graduates Olds College could produce. In 1983 Buck Godwin boasted a 97% employment rate of Olds College Horticulture graduates, many of whom have become recognized leaders in the industry. Buck said that Horticulture graduates carry responsibilities far beyond the program bounds envisioned by the original Advisory Committee and staff. Indeed, he was an incredible mentor and students just wanted to “do him proud”.

A massive industry survey in 1979 showed that 85% of all Horticulture alumni were still employed in their discipline. It became clear that more specialized training was needed for the still expanding industry. A one-year Commercial Floristry certificate had long since been in place to address the training needs of the floriculture segment. The Horticulture diploma program decided to offer a general first year, with the ability to major in Ornamental or Production horticulture by the second year.

Alberta Manpower and industry representaBy 1967 the program was renamed Horticulture Technology and student numbers had tives made history again - this time by making Landscape Gardener an official trade in 1984 and by 1985 the first class of Landscape Gardener apprentices in Canada began their studies at Olds College.

The horticulture department continued graduating more students than anywhere on campus - over 125 graduates each year from horticulture programs at its peak. To accommodate all these students, the horticulture department moved into the beautiful Land Sciences Centre in 1990, complete with an atrium and comprehensive herbarium and 1600 sq. ft. of greenhouse space. To satisfy this multi-faceted industry, majors in the diploma program have come and stayed including Turf Management, which went on to become an independent program in 2004, Integrated Pest Management, Interior Plantscape, Arboriculture and Horticulture Retail Management. As well, in 1996, when the Alberta government announced the introduction of Applied Degrees, Horticulture was the first program at Olds College to jump on board. As a result you could accomplish a BAHT, Bachelor of Applied Horticulture Technology, through this four year program, now renamed the

Bachelor of Applied Science (Golf Course Management and Horticulture majors).

The BMO (Bank of Montreal) Landscape Pavilion was erected in 1996 and expanded in 2011, thanks to generous donations and encouragement from industry, to provide dedicated lab space for Arboriculture, Irrigation and Landscape construction throughout the winter months. The grounds of Olds College have always been an integral part of Horticulture labs, and in 2002 the Honorable Lois Hole cut the ribbon to officially open the Olds College Botanic Garden. In 2012 the Botanic Gardens Phase III and Treatment Wetlands were completed. Thanks again to a loyal and generous horticulture industry, people can enjoy strolling through the gardens and wetlands, learning and being inspired by what can grow in the Alberta climate.

The Olds College Continuing Education department has a rich history with horticulture, as well. University of Guelph Horticulture correspondence courses were offered through Olds College until 1995. It then morphed into the Prairie Horticulture Certificate offered in conjunction with Assiniboine College, University of Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba. Hort Week has been delivering a myriad of horticulture and floriculture courses to industry and

hobby gardeners for nearly 50 years.

It would take far more space than we have here to discuss the many characters that have been employed over the years by the Olds College horticulture department. Buck Godwin was unmistakably the head guru until his retirement in the mid 1980’s, but there have been many amazing, passionate people teaching in our classrooms. They all seem to have the same things in common: they love the tangible rewards that horticulture provides, they are loyal to their industry and they are passionate about teaching these concepts to their students. What does the future hold? A brand new chapter in the Olds College horticulture story will begin this fall. The Landscape Gardener Apprenticeship Program has joined the School of Trades and Technology, and the Turf and Horticulture diplomas have undergone a major transformation, emerging as a block style program where each course will run continuously for 3.5 weeks, one course at a time complimented with online courses. First year Horticulture Technician students will arrive on campus in October, second year Horticulture Technologist students will arrive in November and Bachelor of Applied Science students will arrive in January. The staggered arrival dates allow for students to be in their workplaces for a longer duration to complete field study and directed field study requirements as well as providing employers with student skills for the industry season. This new schedule will allow students to enroll in one individual class if they wish, or complete a one year certificate, two year diploma, or achieve their Bachelor of Applied Science degree. A celebration will be held in the BMO Landscape Pavilion in conjunction with our Surf & Turf fundraiser on December 4, 2014. It would be great to see alumni, industry members and past staff all here to help celebrate our Roots and Shoots; and help us march toward the next 50 years. Exhibitors - Ten Tips for a Successful Show By Barry Siskind

1. Focused Objectives Don't fall victim to the common trade show fallacy that your booth can be everything to everyone. It all starts with having a focused objective - the one or two results that will justify your show participation.

3. Pre-show Promotion The show promotion that your show manager conducts will bring qualified prospects to the door. Your promotion will bring them to your booth. Don't ignore this crucial element to your success.

2. Choose the Right Show Each show attracts a different group of attendees. The attendees should match the profile of your prospective customer as closely as possible. The trick is to choose 4. Well-trained Booth Staff shows that provide quality rather than sheer quantity. Working a show presents a unique set of challenges to booth staff. Ensure that you have taken the time to acquaint them with the skills they need to make the show really pay off.

5. Effective Follow-up Plans When the show is over your real job begins, and it has to happen as quickly as possible. In order to make sure your leads turn into business, your follow-up plans should be finalized long before the show starts. 6. Reasonable Staff Schedule Working a booth can be grueling. In order to ensure that your staff is at their best, regular scheduled breaks are necessary. Every 3-4 hours is the ideal length of time to spend at a booth before a break is needed.

7. Proper Booth Signs and Graphics Attendees quickly get overloaded with information. Signs and graphics that are vague and difficult to understand add to the confusion in the prospect’s mind.

The Clean’n’Easy Rose Collection just got better with the addition of 6 new varieties.

8. Good Informative Literature It seems like everyone wants your brochures. In order to ensure they are read, have fewer brochures to give out. Take the names of those who are really interested and mail material to them after the show.

9. Take Advantage of the Hidden Opportunities Lots of business comes from your booth but there is more to a show. To take advantage of other networking opportunities, check your show schedule and plan to participate in as many events as possible.
