26 I Green for Life November/December 2016

Conference Sessions

Thursday, November 17 Designing for Profit  Patrick DuChene 8:00 – 9:00 am Maximizing the effectiveness and efficiencies for a landscape designer isn’t always easy. In this session, you find out how to leverage your work space and design tools for top productivity, refining your design process, developing internal and external communication processes, and being empowered to understand how your design decisions may impact the profitability of the job. Managing Tree Roots in Nursery Production Mario Lanthier 8:00 – 9:00 am Trees of good quality have a root system growing away from the trunk, similar to the spokes on a bicycle wheel. But not all trees are the same; some roots can cause serious problems and trees usually do not correct these defective roots. This session will examine common root defects on bare root trees and methods to correct them. There will also be a show-andtell with live specimens. Expect to be surprised! Light for the Northern Grower Dr. Christopher Currey 8:00 – 9:00 am Light affects plant growth in different ways and in the north, managing light can be one the grower’s biggest challenges. Light intensity, light quality, and day length affect the growth and development of greenhouse crops differently. In this session, we will discuss how light affects plant growth and actions you can take in the greenhouse. From selecting supplemental lights to managing the photoperiod, this should be an illuminating session for any greenhouse grower! Pest Diagnosis I Dr. Ken Fry 8:00 – 9:00 am This session is hands-on, using microscopes to examine common pests and the damage they cause. It will also be exploring and demonstrating mobile digital apps for use in diagnostics and pest management. Bring along your own samples to examine under the microscope and be sure to bring your favorite digital device to test out some apps. Space is limited to 20 people per session.

Landscape Design/Build Workflow: From Design to  Implementation Gord Koch 9:05 – 10:05 am All landscape design/build firms have some form of workflow process that moves the design through production to completion. Regardless of how straightforward or detailed the system is, at the end of the day the process should sell the design, estimate the project, and build it. Any number of issues can occur during the transfer from selling to construction. This session highlights the integration of a landscape design/build process that utilizes Trimble SketchUp Pro and Extensions to manage the whole operation. The Edible Garden Movement Paul Zammit 9:05 – 10:05 am In recent years, there has been renewed interest in eating local and growing edibles in the home garden. Join Paul for what promises to be a lively presentation as he shares his experiences and tips. Explore the potential and possibilities of growing veggies and herbs in gardens of all sizes, and by gardeners of all ages. Invitation to Excellence: High Performance Orientation Kristen Cumming 9:05 – 10:05 am This session is about starting with the end in mind, using the orientation period to influence employee performance throughout their term of employment. Discussion will include defining the knowledge, skills and attributes required by the organization, tactics to promote the core values, culture and expectations of your organization, and strategies to surface key strengths in candidates. Managers can conduct new employee orientation at a level of excellence that will elevate the employee’s performance and therefore improve organizational outcomes and competitiveness. Pest Diagnosis II Dr. Ken Fry 9:05 – 10:05 am This session is hands-on, using microscopes to examine common pests and the damage they cause. It will also be exploring and demonstrating mobile digital apps for use in diagnostics and pest management. Bring along your own samples to examine under the microscope and be sure to bring your favorite digital device to test out some apps. Space is limited to 20 people per session.

Let it Suck – The Value of Discomfort in Performance  Management Kristen Cumming 10:20 – 11:20 am The process of identifying and correcting performance issues can be difficult, both for the employee and their supervisor. This session will review the process of performance correction and identify the common challenges that managers face in the process. Performance correction can create both an emotional and performance vacuum; this session will explore when and how to “let it suck” and when to fill the void. Optimal for anyone who supervises employees and has peak performance in mind. Hydroponic Herb Production Dr. Christopher Currey 10:20 – 11:20 am Hydroponic food crops are increasing in popularity among consumers and producers. Culinary herbs are a great crop to produce hydroponically and complement lettuce and leafy green production. If you are interested in starting to produce herbs or fine-tune your current production, this session will have something for you. From propagation to harvesting, we will discuss how to select systems and manage light, temperature, and nutrition to produce high-quality culinary herbs. Improve your Business with the Canadian Landscape  Standards Phil Paxton 10:20 – 11:20 am The Canadian Landscape Standard (CLS) is intended for use by anyone who specifies, designs, builds or maintains landscape work and is the single, authoritative resource for landscape construction projects across Canada. For the first time, there is a national guideline to set the standard of landscape work in every province across the country. Join Phil as he talks about the CLS and what that means for us in Alberta, for your business and for your bottom line. Pest Diagnosis III Dr. Ken Fry 10:20 – 11:20 am This session is hands-on, using microscopes to examine common pests and the damage they cause. It will cover all of the pavement structural design and hydrologic design requirements to ensure the success of the project. Permeable interlocking concrete pavement, pervious concrete, porous asphalt and grid pavements will be covered. Cloud for the Anywhere Workplace  Lindsay Dodd 11:25 am – 12:25 pm Learn about the newest workplace tools from Amazon, Google and Microsoft and how the cloud will change the way you do business in the green industry. Are your workers on sites that are too far away for collaboration? Working in your vehicle or worried about no access to internet? Is it peak season and sudden spike in business catches you unexpectedly? Need to shift to operating versus capital costs and pay only for what you use? With the cloud, all this is a possibility. Greening the Highways Dr. Darby McGrath 11:25 am – 12:25 pm The urban landscape can be a tough place for trees. Most cities are designed for cars, which means lots of pavement. Good soil conditions for roads are the exact opposite ideal for trees. The Greening the Highways project is looking at ways to rehabilitate heavily compacted soils found around our roadways. With the three test sites across Alberta, this session will focus on the findings to date, as well as an eye to the next steps. Pest Diagnosis IV Dr. Ken Fry 11:25 am – 12:25 pm This session is hands-on, using microscopes to examine common pests and the damage they cause. Industry and Association News... A Good Year for Growth  The Landscape Alberta Nursery Producers have noted that the 2016 growing season has been incredibly favourable for the growth of trees. Trees dug and basketed this spring are continuing to show excellent progress with reports of specimens increasing up to two sizes already. With continued good weather, many varieties will see well beyond normal growth this season. Contractors, municipalities, and developers should be aware that this may lead to the following issues later in 2016 and even through the 2017 season. • Mismatch between tree size and the size of root ball. • Potential for trees to out caliper the specification • Limited availability of certain sizes due to the rapid growth this year Trees that are experiencing vigorous growth is a good thing for Alberta consumers. If having healthy and happy trees is the goal - mission accomplished. Please consider this information when sourcing or inspecting plant material in the coming months. Consider the size of the tree at time of sourcing or purchase, as well as the overall health of the specimen. Bill 6 Update The Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act (Bill 6) continues to move ahead with industry consultations. There are six different working groups of 12 volunteers working to draft recommendations on the regulations. Landscape Alberta Executive Director Joel Beatson was selected to work on the Employment Standards table. He is happy to report that one of the recommendations of the group was to include nurseries, sod farms, and greenhouses (along with mushroom farms) as primary production and as such be afforded the same employment standards rules as the rest of agriculture. Combined with the other recommendations for variations for agriculture this could be a great boost to competitive advantage for Alberta-based producers. More details can be found at: www.agcoalition.ca/information-board. These recommendations and others still require government approval. Look out for more information in the coming months. Federal  Government  Supports  Canada's  Ornamental Horticulture Industry to Grow its Markets Stephen Fuhr, Member of Parliament for Kelowna - Lake Country, on behalf of Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay, announced a contribution of up to $1.1 million to grow the domestic and international market for Canadian ornamental horticulture at the National Awards of Landscape Excellence ceremony held in Kelowna in August. This funding will help the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) promote and showcase nursery products to buyers in Canada and around the world through marketing

activities, trade shows, and hosting sales missions. The CLNA will also meet with industry partners in the United States and Mexico to discuss common issues and future opportunities. Landscape  Industry  Certified  Test  Event  Held  at  Olds College Landscape Alberta hosted a very successful Landscape Industry Certified test event on August 12 & 13, 2016 at the Olds College Landscape Pavilion. Fifteen candidates challenged the exam this year and we congratulate all participants for their hard work. This event marks our twentieth year of providing certification exam opportunities to industry personnel on the prairies. Landscape Alberta staff members send a hearty thanks to each volunteer who gave their time and expertise to the tasks at hand: planning, calling, judging, timekeeping, emailing, digging, driving, arm-twisting and so much more. We extend a special thank you to our facility host, Olds College, and the support of Karman DiLisio in the Landscape Pavilion. This event would not be possible without the support of many industry suppliers who provide material, equipment and staff for this annual event.

EPA Determines Glyphosate not a Carcinogen In a decision that could have a significant impacton the landscape and lawn care industry, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has concluded that glyphosate, the most widely used pesticide in the world, is not likely a carcinogen. The agency will be convening a meeting of independent scientists next month to review its evaluation, but in advance of that meeting, the EPA released a 227-page issue paper that summarizes all available research on the chemical, which is the active ingredient in Roundup weed killer. The EPA's ultimate conclusion, which the outside scientists will review, is that glyphosate is likely not carcinogenic at relevant doses of exposure. The safety of the chemical was thrown into question last year when a cancer research arm of the World Health Organization came to a different conclusion, that the chemical is likely carcinogenic. The situation was further muddied earlier this year when the EPA accidentally posted online and then withdrew a report from its own

A Look Back... Landscape Alberta History 1990-2009

1990 was a period of Alberta government cutbacks. One in particular was the public horticultural advisory program which was centered at the Alberta Tree Nursery in Edmonton. Following the cutbacks, consumer horticultural advice programs were taken over by the private sector. The Association responded by producing a number of consumer oriented publications such as Trees and Shrubs for the Prairies, Gardening Tip Sheets and Home Owners Guide to Landscaping.

Another loss for the Association was the government’s Alberta Horticultural Advisory Committee (AHAC), which had been in existence since 1943. This committee had been of great benefit to the nursey crops and landscape sectors. The loss of this committee prompted the establishment of other organizations such as the Council of Alberta Horticultural Industries (CAHI) in 1993.

The first of many landscape contractor wage and equipment rate surveys was completed. The average wage in 1991 for a Landscape Gardener journeyman was $11.61/hr. A class 1 truck driver was paid $12.00/hr and a 54” truck-mounted tree spade was charged-out at $75.00/hr.

In June of 1992, volunteers from the Northern Chapter donated plant material and their time to landscape a new park in Edmonton which was built to honor Constable Ezio Faraone, who was killed in the line-of-duty Member education became much more focused in the 1990’s and one result was the previous year. the Growing Your Business program which was commodity sector focused. Many stand-alone workshops and seminars were developed and delivered in Alberta’s major A significant milestone occurred in 1993 when the Association’s annual trade show (Bestcenters. in-the-West) merged with the Alberta HortiIn October 1990, the Association hired a new Executive Director, Nigel cultural Congress trade show. Renamed the Prairie West Horticultural Trade Show, it grew Bowles, who would remain in this position until his retirement in 2014. to become the largest of its kind on the The Association’s 34th annual convention and trade show was held in a new Prairies and the third largest in Canada. conference center at the Banff Springs Hotel.

1991 saw the unveiling if the new LANTA logo, which became one of the most recognizable logos in the Alberta horticultural industry. The Association also purchased its first PC. It was an Acer 486; data was stored on 3½ inch floppy disks and it cost a whopping $4,500.00!

In 1994, the Prairie West Horticultural Trade Show was held at the Mayfield Inn in Edmonton for the first time and remained at the Mayfield Inn until 2005 when it moved to the Edmonton Convention Center. Steve Lastiwka, or Mr. Green Survival, was presented with a Lifetime Member Award. A new plant promotion program called Garden Select was unveiled in 1995. Its aim was to promote plants selected through the Regional Woody Plant Test Project. This program was short-lived and discontinued in 1998. Sod growers faced a number of challenges when Alberta Transportation delayed many shipments at weigh scales throughout the province. At issue were the rules around sod securement. Subsequent changes were made to clarify the safe transportation of sod. 36 I Green for Life November/December 2016

The Executive Choice Award was established in 1995 and the first recipients were Eric Heuver, Marlene Semko and Jim Semko. In October 1996, the Olds College’s Landscape Pavilion sod-turning took place. The Southern Chapter donated $10,000.00 towards construction of the new building. 1997 marked the Association’s 40th anniversary. Membership was over 200 and there were three full-time staff managing the association’s programs. A commemorative dinner, with many past presidents in attendance, was held at the Mayfield Inn. The Olds College’s Landscape Pavilion officially opened in August 1997. This 12,000 sq. ft. facility gave students a year-round indoor facility in which to learn and practice landscaping skills. The first national certification (Canadian Certified Horticultural Technician - CCHT) exams were held in the new facility. Mike Haberl Sr. was program chair. The first person to become certified under the CCHT program was Larry Podesky, Foothills Landscaping Ltd. Calgary.

The Alberta Perennial Trials, a program to evaluate new herbaceous perennials for hardiness and landscape qualities is established. The first trial was held at the Calgary Zoo and Botanical Gardens. . In November, attendance at the Prairie West Horticultural Tarde Show and Conference exceeds 2000 delegates and show visitors for the first time.

The Alberta government commits $11.4 million for the establishment of the Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund for the purpose of promoting and enhancing the crop industry. Executive Director Nigel Bowles is appointed as Vice President. In 2001, LANTA’s website is launched (landscape-alberta.com). Although it was often on the Association’s agenda, 2001 was the beginning of the real battle over “cosmetic” pesticide bans. The opposition to pesticide use had started in eastern Canada, but it would slowly work its way across Canada and remains an issue in 2017.

The Saskatchewan Nursery Landscape Association (SNLA) formally becomes a chapter of the Association. They would remain a chapter until 2004 when they re-formed as an association within the province of Saskatchewan. The CNLA Summer Tour was held in Calgary in 1998. Delegates visited local businesses such as Golden Acre Garden Sentres, Parkland Nurseries, Eagle Lake Nurseries Ltd. Local attractions visited were Olds College, the Calgary Zoo and the Western Heritage Centre. The Association hired Rita Olmscheid to assist in developing and managing the new Canadian Certified Horticultural Technician (CCHT) program. (Later called the Certified Horticultural Technician program, or Certified Landscape Technician or Landscape Industry Certified Technician) The minimum wage in 1998 was $5.40 per hour. This would rise to $5.90 in October 1999. The Alberta government introduced the Fair Trading Act in 1999. This Act requires any business, such as a landscape contractor, who conducts business at someone’s residence, to register with Alberta Municipal Affairs.

The City of Calgary barred landscape contractors from using fire hydrants to fill-up their water trucks. Following meetings with Calgary Waterworks, the issue is resolved. In August, the first outdoor equipment show is held. Called Landscape Expo, it is held in Calgary at Foothills Nursery’s old nursery site and attracts over 600 people to the one-day event. In early 2002, The City of Edmonton sets-up a committee to review pesticide use. Called the Pesticide Advisory Committee (PAC), it met monthly for eighteen months. Most of the discussion would center around herbicide use and the outcome was the establishment of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. For the first time, nursery growers are granted access to the hiring of foreign workers through the Mexican Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (MEXSAWP). In April 2003, Olds College holds its first Tuxes, Tractors & Tiaras event. The gala featured the first annual “Partner of the Year” award, which was presented to Henry Heuver, Foothills Landscaping Ltd. Calgary. Green for Life November/December 2016 I 37

Landscape Alberta also takes over the day-to-day administration of the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association (AGGA). Following-up on discussions that began in 2003, the WCB agrees with the Association’s garden center and greenhouse members that they are classified in the wrong industry sector. Changes are made and WCB rates for these two sectors are reduced by half. In July, LANTA introduces the Plant Health Care Accreditation (PHC) program to recognize companies that demonstrated their knowledge of, and commitment to, the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). While a slowdown in the industry was anticipated, many landscape contractors welcomed a slower pace following several years of breakneck growth and labour shortages. Adding a Super Salesperson (Slowly) By Jeffrey Scott

It's the quickest way to scale your business The fastest ways to grow your business is to add a super salesperson to your staff--but take your time and do it slowly, to make sure you find a professional, high achiever. Contrarily, the quickest way to anger clients and harm your business is to hire a sales misfit. Here are some proven tools to help you understand the difference, and hire smart. The most important tool is your patience; here are the pros and cons of staying patient when searching for a super salesperson: Pros: • • • • •

Cons: •

High performing salespeople pay for themselves 10x over; they make you and the company money. They will positively impact other parts of the organization, raising the bar on everyone. Building a team of 3 or more high-achieving salespeople creates positive peer pressure that lifts your company higher. When you promote someone internally to a level of incompetence, you lose a good employee and sales opportunities. The easy decision is not always the best. You ultimately lose clients and goodwill, when you cycle through (hire, fire and hire) incompetent salespeople. Slow down, and hire right. There are almost no cons to hiring a super salesperson, unless you are not operationally prepared for the boost in production.

The following eight mistakes will help you slow down and hire right. Avoid these 8 mistakes when recruiting your next super   salesperson: 1

Hiring or promoting someone for their technical skills, gift of gab, or nice personality--it is their sales skills that matter most. Look for signs in their resume for past sales success. Not tying them into profit margins: most sales people impact profits in a significant fashion, and their commission should reflect this. Asking them to do too many things: just because their resume reflects a wealth of experience doesn't mean you should expect them to juggle too many balls. It is more profitable to have them focus. Assuming they are driven by money; even salespeople on 100% commission are not wholly driven by money. Take time to discover the key that unlocks their motivation and you will become a better sales manager.

Not managing and mentoring them. Even if they are a sales super star, they need accountability, (positive and corrective) reinforcement, and proper on boarding. When you hire a thoroughbred, you give them more attention, not less. Not using a personality profile when hiring; this mistake will kill your business. After years of making hiring mistakes I have found my favorite personality profile, and you need to find yours. Don't be penny wise and pound-foolish, invest in a good one. Low sales goals: a good salesperson should sell enough to grow your company, cover full overhead including the owner's salary, pay for themselves, and add ample profit to the bottom line. Hiring a salesperson who is not a breadwinner. Ideally your salespeople have financial aspirations and needs. If they are sitting on a trust fund (I have seen that) or don't need to work because they are taken care of at home (I have seen that, too) then they will not be driven. They may still make a good employee, even a great employee, but they won't be a Super Salesperson.

Breakthrough Idea Super sales people are a special breed - it is worth the patience and perseverance it takes to find them. Take Action • Assess the ROI of each of your salespeople and make sure their goals and commissions align. • Do you have the right salespeople in the right sales positions? Shifting them to a better sales position might help you get the most of their potential. • If you (as owner) are the best salesperson on your team, then you may be missing out. Time to reflect: Where do you want to take your firm? Lessons for the First-Time Exhibitor By Barry Siskind Every year companies who have never exhibited are enticed by the prospect of great returns from attending a trade show. While many of these first time exhibitors achieve great results, many do not. They find that the post-show math often shows they did not achieve a positive return on their investment and the result is a reluctance to try again. Exhibiting works. All the data produced by industry associations backs this statement up. But what the research fails to mention is that profit does not come automatically. It is the result of lots of hard work and planning. If you are considering attending your first trade show here are a few pointers that will keep you on track. 1. Do your homework.  Before you sign-up, make sure the show is the right vehicle to further your company’s marketing efforts. This means checking things out carefully. For example, don’t be swayed by large numbers of attendees. It’s more important that the show attract the right attendees. To understand the audience mix, talk to your show organizer, exhibitors from previous years and your customers. This will give you an understanding of the exhibitors and visitors this the show attracts. 2. Visit the show first It’s a good idea to visit the show you are considering exhibiting in before you make the commitment. This gives you a chance to gauge the audience as well as seeing how other exhibitors perform and the quality of their exhibits. 3. Set realistic expectations With some exceptions shows are not a place to write business. However they are a place to gather quality leads that can be followed up after the show. 4. Allocate the proper resources First timers are naturally hesitant before investing heavily in a trade show. What inevitably happens is that they go in the opposite direction and invest too little. This “Exhibiting on the cheap” approach doesn’t work. There is serious competition at a show not only from companies who offer similar solutions but also competition for attention amongst all exhibitors who are vying for the visitor’s attention. Cutting back on your investment with a “wait and see” attitude will produce a less than attractive 40 I Green for Life November/December 2016

display, the look of a less than serious company and the impression that you really don’t know what you are doing. Before you invest, talk to your show manager and show contractors. Also check the literature for industry research. This information can be used as a guide to allocate the right resources. 5. Further your business network The sheer beauty of a trade show is the number of people you can meet. First timers often make the mistake of limiting the potential of growing their business network to those they meet at their booth. The list can be greatly expanded beyond potential customers when you add meeting product experts, finding potential strategic partners and connecting with people in your trade association. 6. Join a group One way to minimize the risk is to be part of a group of other firsttimers. Often governments form these formal groups when they participate in a foreign show and bring groups of companies under a country pavilion. Sometimes show managers will allocate smaller (and less expensive) space where groups of first-timers can get a feeling for the shows potential before they make a larger commitment. These incubator opportunities are not universal but if they are available for the show you are considering give it some serious thought. 7. Don’t give up to soon.  So many ill advised attempts have been made resulting in a shortterm loss of the original investment not only in terms of money but also time. This happens when an exhibitor tries a show and is unhappy with the results. The reason for this unhappiness is often a less than expected return on investment. If you have done your homework well and have developed realistic goals, invested the right among of time and resources and done your job at the show well, knowing whether to stay or leave is based on a lot of imperial evidence rather than a gut feeling. Exhibiting at a trade show is not for amateurs. It is a venue where serious and sophisticated marketers find spectacular results for their show investment. These seven simple steps will put you on the right path.

Landscape Awards Program The Landscape Awards reflect the association's commitment to creating and preserving the beauty of the urban landscape. The program is also designed to reward independent landscape contracting professionals who execute top quality landscape projects. The Landscape Awards program has four main objectives: • Encourage landscape contractors to be the best in their field • Provide a marketing opportunity to those companies that receive an award • Encourage a company’s employees to aspire to excellence • Provide an opportunity to compete in the National Awards of Landscape Excellence Members can enter projects into nine different categories covering construction, maintenance and design. Each entry is evaluated using a set of criteria; the submissions are not judged against each other. There are two award levels: a Merit Award goes to an entry that earns 70-84 points, and an Excellence Award goes to an entry earning 85 or more points. Entries that achieve Excellence status are eligible to be selected for the National Awards of Landscape Excellence, a Canada-wide program developed by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association. The deadline to enter the 2016 Landscape Awards is November 23, 2016. Contact Kyla at kyla@landscape-alberta.com if you have any questions.

Photography and Other Tips for your Landscape Awards Entry

Do you have your camera with you? Make sure to take plenty of pictures highlighting the various stages of your projects. Below are some hints and tips to help you put together a great Landscape Awards entry. We know this is not a photography contest, however, the following points will be helpful: • • • • • • • •

Photos submitted should be ones that you would be proud to display for your most discerning clients. Submit photos taken during the summer or early fall. Lawns should be green and if photos are take in the fall, some leaves should be retained on the trees and shrubs. Photos are best taken during early morning, later in the day, or with an overcast sky. Do not submit photos that are out our focus, too dark (underexposed) or too light (overexposed). Be cautious with panoramic photos as they can produce a distorted image. Distracting objects should be removed before photos are taken. Hoses lying across walkways, stray tools, litter, etc. have no place in a successful entry photo. Choose the highest quality setting on your digital camera as this mode produces the best image. Photos that portray compatibility of materials and show textural qualities are helpful.

41 I Green for Life November/December 2016

• •

Elevated/overhead shots taken from a normal vantage point can be helpful (i.e. from a deck, upstairs window, etc.) Do not make changes to the original image size and do not make major adjustments to the image with editing software. Sharpening and minor colour adjustments are okay. Candid pictures of people using the landscape can show use and demonstrate scale.

More Helpful Tips • The judges determine quality of materials (both plant and hardscape), complexity, completeness of installation, workmanship, and horticultural correctness in the project using the photographs and the written description submitted with each entry. Remember, first impressions count for both judges and future clients. • Include a couple before photos of the project as it helps the judges to see the whole project. • Plant material should be properly selected and welladapted to the site. • Make sure plant material is well-pruned and free of insects or disease.
