Conference Sessions
Thursday, November 16 8:00 – 9:00 am
9:05 – 10:05 am
Integrating 3D to Close Sales Joe Salemi We’re going to explore the 3D options available to professional landscape businesses and unpack just how easy it is to get started and get proficient in the quickest possible way. Looking at the best 3D software solutions on the market, identifying industry trends, and getting a sense of what the future looks like for landscape design. This session is for you if you’re already working with 3D in your sales presentations or if you’re considering offering 3D. You’ll level up any way you look at it.
12 Most Common Reasons Landscape Contractors are Not More Profitable Monroe Porter Is your business prepared for the changes facing the contracting industry? Topics covered include how to avoid plunder, determining your best business structure, dealing with enabled employees, cutting costs and marketing in a more competitive market. Learn how to avoid the traps many contractors fall into and what you need to do to increase your bottom line.
Great New Annuals and Perennials Allan Armitage Allan often gets a firsthand look at what is new from most of the breeders. He will talk about some plants he’s seen over the last five years; some of these may not even be on grower’s benches yet. Join Allan for a discussion on new annuals and perennials coming to your greenhouses and shelves soon. 10 Proven Ways to Drive Traffic to your Store Barbara Crowhurst Foot traffic is one of the most important measures when it comes to running a brick-and-mortar store. More traffic means more opportunities for sales and customer engagement, which in turn leads to higher revenues. This is why retailers should continuously strive to increase foot traffic in your physical location. Even if you think you’re getting enough store visitors, you can always do better. There are still a lot of potential customers out there that you can tap into, and there are plenty of things you can do to increase store visits from existing customers. Let Barbara take you thru a review of your own business practices for increasing foot traffic. Landscape Pest Show and Tell Dr. Ken Fry We will explore the most common pests and beneficial arthropods inhabiting the landscape via images and under the microscope (projected on the big screen for all to see). Topics will include how to identify them, assess the damage, and how to address the risk. We will also examine how to encourage and exploit the beneficial arthropods in the landscape. An assortment of digital aids (apps, websites) will be demonstrated to assist you in your management of the landscape. Participants are encouraged to bring samples in for diagnosis.
26 I Green for Life November/December 2017
Options in Water Quality Treatment Dr. Ann Huber Greenhouse and nursery operators need cost-effective flexible options to manage a variety of process waters that may discharge to natural watercourses and contribute to environmental issues. With water security becoming an increasingly higher priority, farmers wish instead to recirculate and reuse water generated through their operation but need to minimize the risk of spreading pathogens to their production area. The questions of how to decide on if and how to treat recirculated water are many. This session will guide you through the process of deciding what and how much water needs to be managed, what best management practices should be implemented, and water treatment systems make sense for your farm. Strategies for Maintaining and Improving Quality in Home Lawns Katie Dobson Home lawns represent a dynamic community of plants that must thrive under varying microclimates around a home. Research focused on cultural practices to improve overall turfgrass quality while minimizing weed encroachment will be reviewed. Attendees will have a greater understanding of fertility, irrigation, cultivation, and overseeding practices that improve urban lawn health. At the end of the seminar attendees will be able to: • Identify and name the various cool season grasses adapted to Albertan climates • Understand the basics of lawn care cultural practices and the role they play for maintaining optimal turf health • Gain further knowledge on both conventional and alternative (low-impact) herbicides that are currently available in the Canadian market Greenhouse Pest Show and Tell Dr. Ken Fry Greenhouse Session: We will examine the most common arthropod pests in greenhouse vegetable and ornamental crops via images and under the microscope (projected on the big screen for all to see live). We will also examine common
biological control agents and discuss optimal release methods and strategies. Participants are encouraged to bring samples in for diagnosis. 10:20 – 11: 20 am What Happens when 14 Arborists Appraise the Same 10 Trees? James Komen In a study published in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry, 14 certified arborists independently appraised the same ten trees, and the results of their appraisals were analyzed. In the results, the attributes that had the highest variance among appraisers were the Trunk Area and the Condition Rating. The study also identified four key elements of error involved in the appraisal process: personal value error, personal observation error, measurement error, and systematic error. Each of these elements of error will be discussed, accompanied by recommendations for reducing error. The intention of this session is to open a dialogue among the arborist community about the best practices for applying existing appraisal techniques. People Not Plants are the Problem - Diagnosing Plant Problems is the Key to Profitability Dr. Moyhuddin Mirza Have we forgotten to manage greenhouse crops or is it information over load? What does it take to grow over 70 kg of tomatoes/sq. m or 200 cucumbers/sq. m or grow 500 different types of bedding plants without throwing away a single basket? Dr. Mirza will review what happened in 2017 season and provide information on how to match plant needs with your needs for high profitability. Making proper diagnosis and taking corrective measures at the right time is the key to profitability. Increase Retail Sales in 10 Must Do Steps Barbara Crowhurst Retailers are not only looking to keep the sales they currently experience, but looking for ways to continue to grow sales. Barbara will take you through a review of your own business practices for maintaining and increasing sales. You will pick up many tips on what you need to do better, much better! Key Topics covered include: • How to initiate add on sales • How the idea of using a pick of the week works well to increase sales • Why retailers need an effective promotional calendar • Margins retailers need to review monthly and what to look for in this report • Make the customer experience culture a strong element • Why sales targets are important Understandable Number Crunching, Cash Flow and Financial Analysis Monroe Porter Many contractors do not like bookkeeping and number
crunching, so many fail to understand how easy knowing the numbers can be if record keeping, budgeting and cost processes are simplified. Attendees will learn what answers they need to know and the easiest way to provide them. This program explores misunderstandings about cash flow, overhead and cost recovery. Participants will explore how diversification can cloud the true profit picture and how to unravel that mystery. Understand why many contractors consistently lose money on 20-30% of their work and how to identify and eliminate those loses. Contractors don’t have to be bookkeepers and number crunchers, but they do need to know where the company has been and where it is going each month. 11: 25 am – 12: 25 pm Ornamental Grasses in the 21st Century John Friel No longer a niche product, ornamental grasses have become an expected and respected part of good garden design. Increased interest has spurred new breeding, and vice-versa. Well over 100 ornamental grasses are now protected by patents and/or trademarks in the US alone. John will discuss current trends, reliable sellers, and exciting introductions. Delegate It! Jackie Hart Join us in this one hour interactive workshop targeting business owners and their staff. In this fast paced session, learn why successful delegating of projects and tasks is so difficult. Join in the discussion on the art of holding each other accountable at work, in a positive, effective way! Leave this session armed with your our exclusive toolbox to create a clear outline of who can make what decisions without you... or not, and when. The Business of Biophilia Gord Koch and Kim Wickwire The term biophilia is one that is beginning to be used in different communities from sustainable design to horticulture. This word was brought to use by biologist and environmental theorist Edward O. Wilson in the 1980s and translates to mean “love of life”. Biophilia is another way of saying that nature knows best. With the growing movement in areas such as biophilic design and therapy, there is an opportunity to promote what has been known to the horticulture industry into this emerging sector. The presentation provides an overview of the economics of biophilia and the relationship to the horticulture industry. Emerald Ash Borer: Biology, Impacts and Development of a Biological Control Program Krista Ryall The emerald ash borer (EAB) is a devastating invasive beetle which has killed tens of millions of ash trees across North America. Learn about the latest research in using parasitoids to combat this invasive pest. Green for Life November/December 2017 I 27

Good Housekeeping for Better Estimating and Job Tracking Joe Salemi Keeping your house in order means different things to different people, but what if it meant that your estimates were more accurate and tracking your costs on jobs became more streamlined? We will look at some effective ways to make sure your material lists, pricing, budgets, etc. are upto-date on an ongoing basis to make the estimation process easier on everyone. We’ll explore case studies of how some of the most successful landscape companies track their crews progress day to day and how they reconcile costs for big and small jobs.
Protecting your Business from the Uncertainty of Weather Shane Belvin The volatility of the past several winters has complicated the already difficult task of budgeting during the winter months. For per service or per inch snow contracts, the impacts can directly affect your bottom line. For fixed price contracts, it can stress your margins in high snow years and damage client relationships in years with less snow. The uncertainty of weather ensures that the only thing definite about your seasonal finances is that it will be unpredictable. You can analyze forecasts, you can read a Farmers’ Almanac, use last year’s expenditures as a placeholder, or just throw a dart at a board. Tools exist that can mitigate this seasonal risk. This allows both owners and removal service providers to better manage their costs, revenue, and capital structure. These financial tools utilize weather options, or derivatives.
Networking Savvy Fern Richardson Being able to present yourself with confidence in business and social situations is a necessary and valuable skill. In addition to your training and expertise, workplace success depends on the ability to get along with others and present yourself to your best advantage. Strong networking practices reflect favourably on you and your business. Crystal Ball: Garden Trends for the Upcoming Year Sean James In this session, Sean will look at the many gardening trends for the upcoming season including: • a look at the main foci in landscaping, including edible landscaping, gardening for bees, drought-tolerant landscaping and using less “hardscaping” • dealing with urban development and large areas of impermeable surfaces is a challenge, so we’ll discuss techniques for holding and infiltrating rainwater Beyond Organic Matter – Unlocking the Power in Soil Microbial Life Bob Reeves Bob has spent the last decade unravelling the mystery of how plants in undisturbed natural settings perform so much better than the same plants in an urban landscape. Bob will demonstrate why even a non-scientist needs to know about the current findings in soil science. This presentation will provide a practical guide to understanding the dynamics and importance of plant/microbe interactions in soil – information that anyone who makes their living in the landscape trades cannot afford to ignore. The session will conclude with a detailed look at how landscape professionals can implement a more holistic approach to growing, installing, and caring for landscape plants.

Developing a Sales Driven Organization and Selling at a Premium Don Crothers Most markets are competitive and many prospects will push us for a lower price. Even within competitive markets, some sales professionals consistently achieve higher prices than others for their product or service. What differentiates those people that command a superior price? Winning at a premium is within our control - even in competitive markets where the competition is discounting. Join Don to learn about the skill set and the mindset to sell and win at a premium. Invasive Plants and the Ornamental Horticulture Industry – Code of Conduct and Best Management Practices Andrea Eastham The ornamental horticulture industry has been identified as a key pathway for alien invasive plant introduction. Plant species have been introduced into Canada for centuries for use as crops, ornamentals, reclamation and shelterbelts. A small portion escape cultivation and are now having negative impacts on industries, the economy, and the environment. Approximately 80% of the invasive plants currently being managed across Canada came from the ornamental horticulture industry and our gardens. Best management practices such as standard plant labelling, compliance with legislation and regulations, invasive plant disposal, phasing out known invasive ornamentals from a business, etc. will be discussed. Working together, we can make the link between ecology and the ornamental industry. Leading and Challenging Employees without Being a Jerk Monroe Porter This program is designed to help you be a better leader and communicate more assertively while avoiding workplace conflict. Attendees will learn how to increase productivity without being an overbearing boss. Understand how leadership can make a difference and how to get employees
to rise to the occasion. Managing in today’s workplace demands clear goals and the ability to deal with all types of personalities. This program will explore basic methods for employee motivation, pay, training and development. Attendees will learn how personalities, work ethic and communication styles impact productivity. 10:20 – 11:20 am Bringing Back the Nearly Dead: Renovating an Existing Landscape Sean James This presentation will look at dealing with landscapes afflicted with challenges. Bit by bit, we will erase those challenges and redesign the situation. Sean will discuss design principles and construction priorities, along with how to add winter interest to the landscape. Pruning techniques and the principles of hard landscaping (using stone, concrete and wood) will also be discussed. The session will conclude with a Q & A session on how to use existing material and assets when upgrading older landscapes. Riding the Wave of Change Fern Richardson We live and work in a constantly changing world. How can we maintain a balanced perspective as we ride the wave of change? Understanding transition, the human side of change, can help us cope more successfully with change and result in better outcomes for you, those around you and the organization as a whole. Trimble SketchUp Pro and Landscape Design Workflow Gord Koch SketchUp Make and SketchUp Pro are digital design programs that have been around since 2000 providing 3D modeling capabilities throughout many different design disciplines. The presentation provides an overview of the landscape design process, on a small scale site, to show the integration between SketchUp Pro and the companion program Layout. This session will provide information to entry level and intermediate landscape designers in leveraging this design tool from site inventory / analysis and client presentations to construction drawings and build simulations. Whether your comfort zone is pencil and paper, utilizing 2D design (CAD) programs, have experience with SketchUp or a bit of each there is a good chance that you will leave with new ideas for your design toolbox. Tales from the Garden - Stories your Mother Never Told You Allan Armitage Who is Annabelle, of the Annabelle Hydrangea? Hear stories of the people behind famous plants and stories of common names - was there really a Joe Pye? Great fun, informative and people don’t have to be plant crazies to enjoy the stories. This is a talk everyone will enjoy.
11: 25 m – 12:25 pm What to do With a Downpour: Ornamental Ways to Handle Rainwater Sean James Urban Development has resulted in large areas of impermeable surfaces, leading to poor water quality and erosion, as well as drying of the creeks during droughts. Techniques will be discussed to aid in infiltrating rainwater into the soil while beautifying your landscapes and allowing a more unusual palette of plants to be used. Rain Gardens can be a beautiful addition to any yard and allow the planting of some truly interesting plants. They also help the environment by infiltrating water to clean it and restore the water table and base-flow (the water that seeps through the ground to our creeks). We’ll cover how to design and build a rain garden including placement, construction, and plant choices. Energy Efficiency in Greenhouses (Panel) Panel TBA This panel session will focus on energy efficiency in greenhouses, including new technology and the government programs that may help with the investments. With the recent Greenhouse Carbon Rebate program, it is increasingly important to look at maximizing energy efficiency to help ensure the ongoing success of the program. Alberta's New Employment and Labour Relations Legislation TBA Are you ready for the changes to employment standards and labour relations introduced in Bill 17? Starting January 1, 2018 there are significant changes coming to the employment standards in Alberta. This session will focus on what you need to know as an employer. It will also highlight the changes to the Labour Relations code that make it easier for employees to unionize. Key strategies for maintaining a healthy and happy workplace will be covered. Industry and Association News... Minimum Wage Increase The provincial minimum wage increased to $13.60 per hour beginning October 1, 2017. This is part of their campaign promise to move to $15.00 per hour by 2018. Landscape Alberta was involved in consultations on this and like many small business groups advocated for a more flexible timeline and for the option of a youth or training wage. Members of our sector that compete directly with other provinces and states, especially on nursery production, are most likely to be impacted by the competitive pressure faced by lower cost imports. Landscape Alberta also raised concerns that such a swift increase would push wages above $15 an hour even higher. More information on the increase can be found at https://work.alberta.ca/employment-standards/minimumwage.html. Celebrating Excellence at the 14th Annual National Awards of Landscape Excellence The National Awards of Landscape Excellence took place on August 16 in Olds, AB. horticulture industry, as well as the lasting legacy he will leave on this sector. Congratulations to all this year’s winners!
CEIC Announces 2018 EI Premium Rate and Maximum Insurable Earnings The Canada Employment Insurance Commission (CEIC) has announced that the Employment Insurance (EI) premium rate for 2018 is $1.66 per $100 of insurable earnings for 2018. This represents a 3 cent increase for employees over the 2017 rate, and 4 cents for employers who pay 1.4 times the employee rate. More information on the rate increase, click here. Thank you to our volunteers and supporters – 2017 Landscape Industry Certified Technician Exam Landscape Alberta hosted our annual Landscape Industry Certified Technician test event on August 18 & 19, 2017 at the Olds College Landscape Pavilion. We welcomed 24 registrants (some of whom were working toward their second certification designation - yay!) and we’re proud to announce that three successful candidates achieved Landscape Industry Certified Technician status. It was a busy day with fine weather – we even got to enjoy our luncheon outdoors (that was a first!). We owe a big thanks to Karman DiLisio at the Olds College pavilion for making the site perfect for our industry test event. It takes the time, dedication and expertise of many industry volunteers to make this test event a success – especially in the middle of prime landscaping season (not to mention vacation season) – so we sincerely thank the tireless folks who stepped up this summer to plan, recruit volunteers, pick up supplies, assemble and disassemble the test site, take on judge responsibilities, provide plant materials, tools and equipment – and to make a valuable contribution to the future of our industry. Thank you! We especially appreciate the support for the Landscape Industry Certified program shown by Alberta companies that encourage their staff to challenge this test, prove their skills and grow their careers. This program was developed by our industry, for our industry, and continues to be a valuable tool for elevating professionalism and cultivating great team members for landscaping companies across the country. Landscape Company Accreditation now Available The Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) and the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) have recently launched the Landscape Company Accreditation program. This program helps to recognize lawn and landscape companies for their commitment to excellence. Accredited companies: focus on certification as a cornerstone of their business practices, conduct their business affairs responsibly, value community and customer relations, and maintain high standards of workmanship and environmental stewardship in residential and commercial settings. In recognition of their commitment to excellence through certification, the Landscape Industry Accredited Company “Seal of Approval” is awarded to successful applicants who: meet the criteria, agree to the Pledge of Excellence, and submit to a Customer Reference Verification. Maintenance of the Seal requires reaccreditation every three years to retain the accredited company status. For more information visit https://cnla.ca/training/landscape-industry-accreditation or contact Jason Young at jason@cnla-acpp.ca. City of Calgary – Elm Species Change Coming The City of Calgary Urban Forestry department has asked Landscape Alberta to advise members of the policy change to begin phasing out the Brandon Elm from approved City plantings. Weak branch attachment, along with the species being very susceptible to European Elm Scale are the two major reasons. They have requested American Elm as a replacement, preferably from a seed stock source. There is recognition that this may take 3-5 years to fully implement. The “AG Safe Alberta Society” has Launched! When the agricultural industry marshaled together in January Green for Life November/December 2017 I 31
2016 in response to the Bill 6 challenge, it was with the express vision of advancing safety cultures and leading this effort in Alberta agriculture. Through time and extensive work within the agricultural sector, it was clear from our producers that the establishment of an industry led safety association or society would enable the vision for safety leadership to be realized. The group worked directly with the Alberta government at the Ministry level and participated strongly in the Bill 6 Technical Working Group consultation table process, wherein this leadership was demonstrated and the government supported this industry led association. Hats off to everyone involved in this initiative and getting this society up and running for our industry. a risk of concern to human health. Occupational and residential risks associated with the use of glyphosate are not of concern, provided that updated label instructions are followed. The environmental assessment concluded that spray buffer zones are necessary to mitigate potential risks to non-target species (for example, vegetation near treated areas, aquatic invertebrates and fish) from spray drift. When used according to revised label directions, glyphosate products are not expected to pose risks of concern to the environment. All registered glyphosate uses have value for weed control in agriculture and non-agricultural land management. PMRA is granting continued registration of products containing glyphosate with requirements of additional label updates to further protect human health and the environment. To comply with this decision, the required label changes must be implemented on all product labels sold by registrants no later than 24 months after the publication date of this document.

Green Haven Garden Centre celebrates 40 years of community building in Lethbridge In 1977, Irvin and Lyla Leishner started their family on the path of growing a business that would also grow their Lethbridge community. Karen Barby and Gail Smith, daughters of Irvin and Lyla, have been part of the business from day one and have worked diligently to cultivate it into the landmark business it is today. After Irvin’s initial planting of several thousand spruce trees, the business quickly expanded to include many more tree and shrub species, and a greenhouse. They have never stopped growing - 40 years later, their site boasts a 10,000 square foot retail house featuring an ever-expanding line of annuals and tropical house plants, attached to a 5,000 square foot store retailing gardening supplies, giftware, jewellery and fashion accessories - with nine more single greenhouses for production totalling 40,000 square feet of growing area for bedding plants.

Green Haven Garden Centre is definitely a family affair – Karen’s heart is in the green side of the business, and Gail specializes in the gift and fashion merchandising side. Karen was bitten by the botany bug while attending Lethbridge College and because their garden centre was across the road from the federal agriculture research station, she had access to some very knowledgeable and supportive scientists in the
community. Gail has a designer’s eye and enjoys creating retail magic in their displays of home and fashion accessories. Christmas time is truly special, with beautiful themed displays of ornaments and decorations, fresh and artificial trees, winter greenery, and a warm welcome – making it a favorite holiday destination in Lethbridge. Green Haven continues to innovate its marketing strategy, successfully building a Facebook community which has increased event participation and enhanced visibility of their year-round retail destination. Gail’s husband, Shawn, owner of Sungreen Design, has played a major part in designing and building the store and new perennial house, and Karen’s husband, Terry, is Green Haven’s jack-of-all-trades, taking care of maintenance details and running office errands for this busy company. Through the years, Green Haven Garden Centre has always supported charitable initiatives and organizations in Lethbridge, providing plant material, gift cards, auction items – whatever is needed, including their time and commitment – to ensure their community prospers as their business does. The Giant Pumpkin Festival is their biggest annual event, and 2017 marks the 28th year it has been bringing the community together to support the Children’s Wish Foundation, Alberta Chapter (http://www.childrenswish.ca/events/category/alberta-northwest-territories/). Green Haven has been involved since the inception of the festival, but it was around 1999, when it grew beyond the organizers’ dreams, that the garden centre opened its doors to host this remarkable family event. Growing every year, the festival now welcomes nearly 2000 visitors and features a giant pumpkin growing contest, live and silent auctions, games, crafts, concessions, prizes, a petting zoo, and much more fun stuff – with 100% of the proceeds going to this worthy charitable organization. The local Children’s Wish Committee organizes around 100 volunteers to make this a not-to-be-missed event for the whole community, especially the 1000+ kids that take in all the fun and games. Achievement. Landscape Alberta members and staff were on hand to celebrate with the Green Haven crew at this national event, held this year at Olds College in Olds, AB. It was such a treat to celebrate their achievement and to thank them for their support and service to the green industry in Alberta! Earlier this year, Karen and Gail’s families, along with their mom, Lyla, celebrated the 40th anniversary of their thriving garden centre. As they proudly show on their company website, Green Haven Garden Centre has been a labour of love for the Leishner family, and with the dedication of their wonderful staff they will continue to make their customers’ lives greener, delight shoppers, and be a meeting place for their community for many years to come. Landscape Alberta is proud to have Green Haven Garden Centre as a stalwart member of our industry association since 1987. Together with several landscape contractors and tree nurseries in the area, Green Haven helped form the Chinook Chapter of the association. These business owners met regularly for many years to exchange ideas, learn from one another and build their local industry. Green Haven has contributed to our provincial horticulture industry for decades, by sponsoring and promoting new association members, and by hiring and supporting staff that seek training and continuing education here in Alberta. This summer, at the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association’s 2017 National Awards of Landscape Excellence, Green Haven Garden Centre was recognized by Garden Centres Canada with the award for Outstanding Retail

Leadership is a vague term that is thrown around a lot with little substance or real understanding. Believe it or not, being a better leader as owner or upper management in your company is one of the most valuable things you have to offer as a small business. Let’s start with some definitions that clarify the difference between leadership and management. Management is about control. It is about staying on the top of the day-to-day details required to run a business. The only thing you can really control is time, quality and money. Don’t get me wrong, good management is important but it shouldn’t be confused with good leadership. One might argue you can control people short-term by managing behavior but it is difficult. As employers, we can, to some degree, force people to do what is expected through work rules, pay and systems. However, a forced employee is not necessarily an inspired employee. Leadership is about people. It is the skill of influencing people to build a common commitment to organization goals. Leaders gain commitment rather than compliance. Leaders create an environment where employees feel like they are part of the solution and bought into company objectives. Through communication, leaders reinforce where the company is going and build employee engagement. A quote I like to use is “Management without leadership is like aligning the deck chairs on the Titanic; in the big picture it really doesn’t matter.”
Better Leadership Means Better Employees By Monroe Porter
Contractors must sharpen their leaderships skills because it is the single greatest employment advantage a small employer has over a large company. Day-to-day employees at Ford Motor company don’t get to interact with someone named Ford or an executive of the company. Warren Buffet owns dozens of companies but no one really expects to work with him daily. At a small business, ownership can interact with employees and hands on build a better organization. With such low unemployment, people are leaving jobs at record numbers. Earlier this year, Money magazine reported employee job changes were at a nine year high. With unemployment hovering near 4%, the “take this job and shove it” attitude is growing. In fact, many economists consider full employment to be around 4% as that is the amount of people working at any given time. In today’s hot employment environment, unhappy employees are going to leave. Contractors have to change their attitude and interaction styles to attract and keep good people. Too many contractors are buried in the day to day and quick to point fault to what goes wrong but slow to sing company praises or success. Many don’t know how to have a leadership conversation and confuse leadership practices with reviews. Green for Life November/December 2017 I 35
Practicing better leadership has little to do with the often-dreaded practice of giving employee reviews and discussing pay. It’s not about the individual employee but rather about where the company is going and strategically what is needed. Employees like to work at a place that is succeeding and moving forward but employers tend to focus on the negative. Don’t confuse niceties, company parties and being a good guy with leadership. Leadership is about respect, not friendship. It is about gaining commitment and engaging those around you to jump on the company band wagon. It’s about feeling good about where you work and believing in the company. Yea, yea I know what you are thinking, this is all a waste of time and you don’t understand construction people. People are people. Everyone wants to be appreciated. If you don’t pay attention to your spouse, you stand a chance of losing him or her. If you don’t pay attention to your employees, you stand a chance of losing them. And I know as a small business owner, employees can hurt your feelings and it is hard not to take things personally. But don’t punish everyone for the sins of a few. Here are some things to work on and consider when making your place a better organization. Publish your successes. Make known when the company does well and why you appreciate everyone’s effort. If you have a unique large job, maybe you can take photos of the crew with it and give prints to the crew and customers. It’s easy and inexpensive to do. Share things that are changing in the company such as software, new equipment methods, etc. Let people know what is going on and why. Too often we do things like put GPS on trucks and employees merely think we are checking up on them. Explain that it helps with safety, vehicle theft and insurance. If rain, a unique job or other circumstances demand overtime and an extra commitment, explain what is going on and that it is a temporary situation. Remember, people will make an extra effort in unusual circumstances but if you ask them over and over to run that extra mile, they will eventually give up. Talk one-on-one with people. Shake their hand. Have good eye contact. Show some interest. Tell them where the company is going and ask them how they see things. Try to gather information from the bottom up. Remember, if one person said it was a problem, it may not be. If everyone says it is a problem, it is a problem, even it is only about perception and not the real facts. Think about what it is like to work for you. Is it push, push and all negative? Would you work for you? Would you want your kids long term to work for you? Contracting pace today is fast and hectic. Texts and emails make it even more demanding but take time to smell the roses, share some success and interact. You don’t want to become a member of the “take this job and shove it club.” See Monroe Porter at the 2017 GISC, November 16 & 17, 2017 in Calgary at the BMO Centre. www.greenindustryshow.com. Retail Makeover The Customer Experience is important. Here are several ways that you can really make this important strategy work for your business effectively.
Improving levels of customer experience has now become a top priority for retailers and increasingly proving to be a key competitive edge. Improving brand loyalty and keeping today’s customer coming back. Whether it’s to your bricks and mortar location or your on line shop. Retailers differentiate yourself … your business future depends on it. The basic definition of the customer experience encompasses all the interactions a customer has with your store, your products and services. Retailers understanding that the customer experience is an integral part of their customer relationship services will get further ahead in today’s competitive retail marketplace. Think about this, when is the moment that customers first learn about you? Is it thru the internet, your website, social media, local advertising, email marketing, maybe driving by your store seeing your sign, your front windows or a friend or family member told them about you. The customer experience has begun. Make sure it’s all favorable. You may not get a second chance. As customers come into your store and you haven’t seen them before start asking:” how is it we have the pleasure of you being in our store today?” Listen to what they say and what has brought them in. You’ll learn a lot about what you’re doing that works to influence their shopping travel habits. Take every step possible to ensure that your customers’ experiences are the best that you can possibly make them. Here are a few ideas:
By Barbara Crowhurst
Who are Your Customers? Before you can fully improve your customer’s experience you need to know who your customers are. Write a customer profile: Their age, where they live, what they make a year, are they married, single, what they like to do in their spare time, general interests. This will help you identify ways to fine tune how you connect with your customers and if your product fits with your customer’s needs. Survey your customers: At your store, through email, direct mail or on your website. Ask customers how they found out about your store products or services, how often they buy it, and where they purchase it. Ask customers to rate your staff, customer service, store layout or website design, pricing, and product offerings. Free Retail Makeover Store Evaluation Survey down load https://www.retailmakeover.ca/shop/store-evaluation-/ Take to heart what your customer is telling you and make the changes. Enjoy hearing what your customer has to say about you.
Don't forget, say thank you for taking the survey and offer them a $10 store gift card to use however your customer wants to spend it; pretty inexpensive direct marketing tool. Train Your Sales Staff I can’t speak to this issue strongly enough. Your staff must share and deliver your vision and message for the customer experience. Hire and train people that exhibit ownership. Invest in this both in money and time. It will be well worth it. Enhance your sales staff’s education and skills thru sales training programs, updated product knowledge and the customer service experience standards you have set. You want the interaction between the customers and your staff to be guaranteed because they know what you want. Green for Life November/December 2017 I 37
Say “Thank You” This is a very easy tip. Show your customers that you appreciate their business by saying “thank you” often. When they first come in, say thank you for dropping in today and when they are leaving say thank you for shopping with us today. Be sincere make sure your staff come off as sincere as well. Impressions Because we are multi sensory as people, a shopper is no different in their impressions of your store. Customers use their sight, hearing, smell, hands, feelings and taste to assess you and gain a fully rounded impression. Connect with all the senses both in your bricks and mortar location and on line as well and you will be well on your way to making the customer take notice that you are something special, different from the rest of the retailers, and worthy of the customers’ loyalty. Connect on a One on One Level Customers like to feel like the retail stores they shop in know who they are and understand their interests and needs. Making the customers’ experience personal as often as possible is important. Knowing what types of technology, or media, customers want to hear from you on is important. Is it their smart phone, home phone, text, social media, home address or email? Research shows that the most effective way to communicate to consumers because of the amount of time we spend in front of our computers is email. Email marketing is such an important tool for this part of the customer experience strategy. Know what your customers buy from you and how often they buy is the second piece in this
strategy. You will be able to zero in and invite them to visit your store or website when what the customer has previously bought from you or shown interest in meets what you are currently promoting. Non-Billable Time is Killing You By Jeffrey Scott
Do you track this? If not, you are not alone. Many if not most companies do not track non-billable time and are not aware of just how large it is. Last week, a member of one of my landscape peer groups emailed me and the group with the following discovery: "The last 2 years I started tracking all un- billable hours for our field labor to get the numbers for our new budgets this year. Last year we used 25% as un-billable and after running the numbers found out we are actually at 33.9%. That is a difference of 8.9%. The difference for us works out to $30,335 in missed opportunity..." But the math shows that his opportunity cost is much higher! The gap in hours (the 8.9%) was 2159 hours. If you multiple that by his hourly wage he charges out you get $115,700. Imagine if you had an additional 115k in revenue, and the labor was already paid for? How much of that would fall to the bottom line? If those became productive hours, all you would have to pay for would be the materials, and some other variable costs. Your fixed costs are covered, and even some of your variable costs would already be covered. The rest would be profit. Even if you could recover just half of that, it would be a nice lift to your bottom line. The total opportunity gains are even higher: Because the more productive time you spend at a client’s property, the more customer satisfaction and goodwill you create, the more you build your brand, and the more you avoid your clients from hiring someone else to service their needs. To protect your clients from shopping elsewhere, the best defense is a good offense. And there is more: Even if you charge your clients for travel time, you can still aim to decrease travel time and increase productive time spent at a client’s location. This will make you
more money and make your clients even happier! Jeffrey’s Breakthrough Idea: Stop the madness; your nonbillable time may be killing you unless you focus on it directly. How much profit is leaking out of your company? Take Action: • Measure it, and start to manage it. • Utilize incentives so your crews are constantly brainstorming on how to reduce their non-billable time. • Join me at one of my all day workshops (listed below) to learn which incentive systems work best, and how to motivate your team to work more efficiently, go to: www.GrowYourLandscapeBusiness.com Jeffrey Scott, MBA, author, business coach, hall-of-fame consultant, is the expert in growth and profit maximization in the lawn & landscape industry. Landscape Awards Program The Landscape Awards reflect the association's commitment to creating and preserving the beauty of the urban landscape. The program is also designed to reward independent landscape contracting professionals who execute top quality landscape projects.
The Landscape Awards program has four main objectives: • Encourage landscape contractors to be the best in their field • Provide a marketing opportunity to those companies that receive an award • Encourage a company’s employees to aspire to excellence • Provide an opportunity to compete in the National Awards of Landscape Excellence Members can enter projects into nine different categories covering construction, maintenance and design. Each entry is evaluated using a set of criteria; the submissions are not judged against each other. There are two award levels: a Merit Award goes to an entry that earns 70-84 points, and an Excellence Award goes to an entry earning 85 or more points. Entries that achieve Excellence status are eligible to be selected for the National Awards of Landscape Excellence, a Canada-wide program developed by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association. The deadline to enter the 2016 Landscape Awards is November 22, 2017. Contact Kyla at kyla@landscape-alberta.com if you have any questions.
Photography and Other Tips for your Landscape Awards Entry
Do you have your camera with you? Make sure to take plenty of pictures highlighting the various stages of your projects. Below are some hints and tips to help you put together a great Landscape Awards entry. We know this is not a photography contest, however, the following points will be helpful: • •
Photos submitted should be ones that you would be proud to display for your most discerning clients. Submit photos taken during the summer or early fall. Lawns should be green and if photos are take in the fall,
• • • • • • • •
•
some leaves should be retained on the trees and shrubs. Photos are best taken during early morning, later in the day, or with an overcast sky. Do not submit photos that are out our focus, too dark (underexposed) or too light (overexposed). Be cautious with panoramic photos as they can produce a distorted image. Distracting objects should be removed before photos are taken. Hoses lying across walkways, stray tools, litter, etc. have no place in a successful entry photo. Choose the highest quality setting on your digital camera as this mode produces the best image. Photos that portray compatibility of materials and show textural qualities are helpful. Elevated/overhead shots taken from a normal vantage point can be helpful (i.e. from a deck, upstairs window, etc.) Do not make changes to the original image size and do not make major adjustments to the image with editing software. Sharpening and minor colour adjustments are okay. Candid pictures of people using the landscape can show use and demonstrate scale.
More Helpful Tips • The judges determine quality of materials (both plant and hardscape), complexity, completeness of installation, workmanship, and horticultural correctness in the project using the photographs and the written description submitted with each entry. Remember, first impressions count for both judges and future clients. • Include a couple before photos of the project as it helps the judges to see the whole project. • Plant material should be properly selected and welladapted to the site. • Make sure plant material is well-pruned and free of insects or disease.
