“Samlingen” If Aarhus had its own Acropolis or its Roman Forum, it would surely be on the hilly terrain within the central part of the city. Here the landscape would define the grounds for an assembly of public institutions and public spaces into a place of identity and legacy.
Introduction There is no Acropolis in Aarhus. However, Aarhus has a characteristic terrain in the centre of the city. Here, on the hills of Aarhus, institutions such as Musikhuset Aarhus, The Town Hall, and the ARos museum are placed in- and along a landscape-diagonal from the Main Station to Mølleparken. Today this
“ the urban landscape is disconnected and identity is only defined by the institutions themselves and not by the landscape” landscape is divided into detached public areas of Banegårdspladsen, Rådhusparken, Rådhuspladsen, Musikhusparken and ARos. The notable division is strengthened by roads and service infrastructure like Vester Allé, Park Allé, Frederiks Allé, Aros Allé and parking lots connected to hotels, schools and cultural institutions. Consequently, the urban landscape is dis-

Samlingen The concept of “Samlingen” refers to something that assembles different ‘matters’ and in this assignment it is the working title of a new landscape that stretches from the Main Station and across the hill and down to Mølleparken.

Preconditions and limitations Landscape Studio 2022 invites you to come up with creative strategies/directions/and concrete Ideas to concretize what ‘Samlingen’ means to you as Landscape Architects through your project. The site have buildings and landscapes that are listed as protected in different categories. Although it is not a limitation in and of itself, the design solutions must adopt a conscious position in response to this scenario. Furthermore, a future light rail train is expected to transect the project site from the main station via Park Allé and Vester Allé and must be considered in the design proposals. The ambition is to create a contemporary urban landscape that meets the historical, cultural and economic demands for the future as well as the demands we have for a sustainable liveable city. Context The design must balance combinations of large-scale strategies and small-scale dedications. Large-scale strategies Each design must elaborate on the relation to its urban context of Aarhus. Different urban initiatives are part of the puzzle in Aarhus and can be of help in the design strategy.
“The design must balance combinations of large-scale strategies and small-scale dedications ”
Project site & Strategical context:’Aarhus C
Small-scale dedications The proposal must consider principles such as storm water management on a local level depending on the Idea. Also the proposal must consider plant materials, topography (terrain) and surfaces of the
urban floor. The design program aims to secure small- scale functions and local identity in a reality where the site consists of both public and private spaces. Interventions along and in proximity to existing (or future) bicycle, and pedestrian connections can be identified, designed in greater detail and used for such proposes.
Build structures New build structure, such as art, cultural and/or smaller pavilions can be introduced into the design depending on the Idea. The proposals shall reflect and contributes to an on-going discussion regarding capital nature, its structural, social, historic, economic and cultural significance in our cities today. Thank you and good luck.

The Idea is the Method than anything, Landscape Studio is a ‘connection’ that we have with eachother’s Ideas for change, and a professional ‘connectedness’ to the sciences and arts we cross-travle to achive the desired development. Ideas are the parent of change and the fuel that drives creative work in Landscape Studio. However, ideas are never enough. In the studio what matters is how Ideas are

Versailles is transformed into the inside “construction site” of the design Idea. Here, ‘what we say’, ‘what we do’ and ‘how we are’ can be adjusted at all time. This is how we stay connected to the Idea with a specialized ‘ Design Conversation’.
The IDEA is both a design tool and a pedagogical tool in Landscape Studio. We want to be where language is made. Everything we make, built, write, unmake and rebuild in the office evolves around this endeavour. This is Landscape Studio.

to achieve direction. All this ofregrounds a form of preformance. We call it a Design Conversation. Ideas are shared fast. In the studio, we experience the force of contingency and the improbable combinations of events when ideas are exchanged between fellow designers. The result can be messy when Ideas are lost in translation or they fall into the category of good inten-

tions. The design process suffers if the exchange has no direction and no medium that supports observation and inquiry. Therefore, we perform in order to slow down the exchange of Ideas at certain intervals in order to achieve the desired expansion. Drawing techniques and simple models play central roles in this process and they are both slow and fast at the same time.
The Design Conversation Design Conversation is when Ideas are preformed under a power-
ful vertical projector in a curated room. We call it thick space. We will be in proximity through a common space to supports observation and inquiry. The drawing is the medium through which we are connected to the Idea. We make drawings to perform, repeat and rehearse in order to construct the physical grammar needed to transform vocalized language into drawings that can perform the Idea. It is often iconic landscape typologies that we find in our language. Through these repeated activities (specified in the calendar) and actions the Idea can
expand beyond the metaphor and narative. We draw structures of the landscape typologies: the entrance (what kind? primary or secondary? context? how many?), a path (where to? how wide? the material? soft or hard?) and a forest (scale? what kind? how do you establish it? do we have a reference? draw the dots!). We continue to a thicket, a clearing, a row of trees, buildings and etc. We draw every word we can and then we write a new word. Although the conversation works as a forward movement, the mediation between computer and hand
drawings - the hybrid nature of pencil and projected image – allow us to turn back, rewind, zoom in and examine. We continue with the making and unmaking of the image. We look at it again. We draw and withdraw. We combine in order to synthesize! (make sense) - we never add or multiply. Welcome to Landscape Studio.

Days in the Office The assignment is phased (curated through our activities), open and with few initial limitations and can be divided into three overall phases. The first phase of the assignment is to produce a Collision (combination of collage techniques, drawing, notation and visionary thinking). This phase can be seen as an overall explorative study of the problems and potentials – creatively elaborated in conceptual Ideas for change. The second phase aims to develop a master plan and includes ‘Design by Reference’ and ‘Ro-

The calendar (last page) shows the scheduled activities shown in the strategy board. Since the course is a full time course, it is expected that the students/groups, outside of the scheduled activities, find the necessary time for preparation. NOTE. Changes may occur. Midtpunktet occurs around The Walk that structures through the park and combines the cultural institutions while activities, squares and green areas are involved along the walk, inviting different users to come together in a new public park in the middle of Aarhus. Existing vegetation is mainly preserved while new vegetation is planted in order
to create a quiet and coherent park that is shielded from the adjacent traffic and busy city center in Aarhus.
CONCEPTS
A wide multifunctional walk with different types of activities along the path combines the institutions of the city and creates a coherent park. The Walk works more as a place to take a stay
rather than just a path system. Several green entrances connect the area to different parts of the city for easy access. Whenever there is an opening to the park, you get met by a green spot with a specific entrance tree. Peripheral vegetation enclose the area and works as a boundary where buildings are not covered up toward the roads. Frederiks Allé is closed down

The new walk is established as a solid paved structure going through the park. By encapsulating existing green areas new public places occur in a more human scale, such as The Common, The Grove, and The Exhibition Garden. The brought walk invite different groups into the park whether it is by using the café, the new squares, the playground or roller-skating area. For a walk in a lower pace a secondary path system in gravel will let the users to other parts of the park. Existing and new vegetation contributes to a greener and more biodiverse park and creates small niches for more private stays

The structure not only links all parts of the site, but also arranges active functions along The Walk. A variety of green spaces, activity squares and sitting areas are distributed from south to north, which correspond to the functions of individual location and
buildings while forming the active structure of The Walk. In front of the Music School and the Music Centre there are plazas for performances. The existing flora has been retained to keep identification and add seating to relax. The gently green slope is also enlivened by a café and a snack bar.
A planting belt will enclose the entire park and work as a visual barrier from the surrounding roads and buildings, creating a dense atmosphere. The new trees and bushes are typical Danish screening planting and they are carefully chosen according to growth strategies and local conditions. Most of them are already found among the existing trees in the area which contribute to a more coherent park.

The main path, running from north to south, provides universal access to urban green spaces and connects the cultural institutions bordering it. Along the main path, several smaller pathways intersect and branch out, allowing for both quick and efficient routes or leisurely
strolls. In the center of the new park, a large open lawn stretches across the landscape bordered by trees and uncut grass, creating an unbroken belt of green for the town citizens to enjoy. In front of Musikhuset (The Music House), a new stage fit for large public events or informal gatherings in the sun replaces the former plaza and parterre garden. Instead,
the new square “Musikpladsen‘’ provides a focal point between Musikhuset, ARoS and the Music School. On its southern end sits the new “Next Level” extension to ARoS while Officerpladsen, a historical square used for markets and festivals, lined with classical trees, is preserved and will continue to provide space for events.

SPACE FOR LIFE
Midtbyparken is not just a space for people, but for the ecosystem services that they need to thrive as well. While the new exotic trees contribute to the cultural nature qualities of the park, the dense and solitary plantings of native species are chosen not just for the aesthetic values but for their biodiversity value. The existing trees that have to be removed are left as sculptural and climbable deadwood in the uncut grass and meadows of the park, providing yet more opportunities for life to find a way in the middle of the urban environment.

Ramps and stairs, interspersed with trees, shrubs and perennials to soften their appearence in the landscape, continue the green connection from ARoS, through the new orchard, over Vester Allé on to both Aarhus Kunsthal (Aarhus Art Hall) and Mølleparken. These green areas are enhanced with new trees of the same species as will be planted in the central part of the park in order to strengthen the visual connection between these areas. The newly established Åpladsen public square, along with more wooden platforms along Aarhus Å, closes of part of the existing road and expands the recreational facilities of Mølleparken to encompass both sides of the river, making full use of that rare quality of inner city life: Running water.

PAVINGS
The surfaces of the park allude to the historical qualities of the area, consisting of a mix of both rustic and modern materials. Smooth surfaces, such as concrete, asphalt and vegecol are mainly used where people move through the area at a quick pace while tiles are placed where people gather and meet. Rough surfaces, such as gravel and uncut grass encourage slower strolls through the landscape.

New plantings increase diversity and spatial experiences. More species of solitary single- and multi-stem trees are added with striking characteristics, such as colour or foliage, to give the park a distinctive look. Dense plantings consisting of native species increase the biodiversity in the area and are planned to grow and support the growth of oak trees, ensuring the long-term future of the park.

No matter from what side you approach the park the terrain is rising and end on a flat hilltop. The project site is located in the central part of Aarhus with important cultural institutions framing the site e.g. AROS, The City hall, Musikhuset, the theatre Bora Bora and the local music school. Today the project site is divided into many disconnected zones towards the different institutions e.g. Sven Hansens Have towards Musikhuset and Rådhushaven in relation to the Cityhall.
AARHUS COMMON
Aarhus Common aims to gather the site as a park with its own identity and still keeping existing qualities. The concept in the design is to gather the institutions around a large common. Surrounding the common a uniform zone, the membrane zone, is creating space for a path system, niches to stay or do different activities. Between the cultural institutions and the membrane a zone is reserved for existing elements or new squares which relates to the diverse function and identity of the different

Aarhus Common is located in the central part of Aarhus framed by cultural institutions. The purpose of the design is to gather the site as its own identity by creating a zone, called the membrane zone that separate a large common and diverse zones facing the institutions. The membrane zone is uniform in materiality and have a meadow belt running through. On the common and in the zones around the institutions many of the existing qualities are preserved but framed differently.

LAN-
The design language of straight lines and soft round curves is chosen to gather the site and to create many corners and pockets for activities or stay. The design language naturally creates these small pockets where it is intuitive to furnish with a bench and
a lamp. The common has its own design language like almost a circle to create a natural centre that is not to geometrical shaped.
REMAIN EXISTING QUALITIES
The identity of the cultural institutions is important to preserve and underpin. Many existing
elements are kept e.g. most of Officerspladsen, the pavement around Ridehuset and the ramp and stairs in Rådhushaven. Also as many trees as possible is kept. Only a few trees has been necessary to take out to realize the park.
THE COMMON
Aarhus common will appear as a big green lawn with large existing trees e.g. is some of the robinia trees in groups remaining from Sven Hansens Have, Lime trees in a line along Frederiks Allé and old beautiful oaks and other tree species in Rådhushav-

The road Frederiks Allè cuts though the project site and is separating the common in two parts. It is still possible to drive through, but the road is narrowed down to two roadways and a double bike path on one

ENTRANCES
Tree grid plantings mark the entrances of Aarhus Common. The tree planting grid consist
of rows of Cherry and European Aspen. The Cherries are planted in rows next to the path and contribute with flower attraction and colours. The European Aspen is planted more densely and together they create a green grove with many slim trunks and a roof of leaves. The grid plantings are placed right before the terrain raises. Noticed first are the trees,

PRESERVING TREES AND GARDENS
The project has wanted to pre-

We have reinforced the existing trees by planting new trees around the old ones, which now functions as dense clusters that end up in horizontal lawns. In the clusters we now have a under story and existing solitary trees, which gives more layers in the vegetation and in the future can leads to
more different plant- and insects species. We have also preserved the hedges in Sven Hansen’s garden and the planting and pavement in Arne Jacobsen’s garden next to the City Hall.

Our vision of the new park is to create a sustainable area inspired by the unique remarkable parks and gardens and cultural institutions in the area. We have approached the area with great humility and worked with the existing structures rather than towards them, and thus worked to preserve the trees, parks and history of the area as much as possible. However, we have also an ambition to make the intuitions and historical famous architects talk together in a park, which is not yet a new prestige monument, but a green area for the people of Aarhus. In Invisible Cities Italo Calvino says: “The city does not consist of this, but of relationships between the measurements of its space and the events of its past.” Inspired by Calvino’s words we have examined historical maps and preserved the existing qualities and structures.
On the Market Square there is room to stay in the form of movable table and bench sets, concrete plinths and on the new mowed lawn. Group 4.: Frida Irving Søltoft npr491, Patrik Kock Larsen pkb723 and Pernille Jakobsen tnm202

The shapes at the perimeter have a wilder and close planting structure, the inner and bigger islands have a more open expression. This is to shield from city noise and urbanity and consequently create a feeling of approaching a clearing when walking along the gravel paths of the park. Aarhus Heights is the new collective park of the many cultural institutions gathered on the ridge of Aarhus. The project is based on the existing trees and planting, from which enclaves of new planting has been created. These enclaves mimic the forests that surround Århus and let the paths in between act clearings. The great volume of the enclaves break up the wide space between the large buildings and create smaller spaces and a coherent identity.

Inspired by the forrests going around and into Aarhus, we want to create a variety of dense and open spaces of vegetation. The new planting structures are shaped using the existing trees as the starting point creating enclaves that stretch out and divide the big area into several smaller rooms of varying
character. The plantings will also be used strategically to create pathways as well as framing the architecture, and make each building shine in its own right. To further dismantle the hierachy of the existing area, we’re toning down Frederiksberg Allé by letting the design go all the way out and into the road, emphasizing the priority of
pedestrians and slowing down heavy trafic. Surfaces, pavings and materiality all work as tools to create a cohesive place that is legible in terms of functions while still offering a sence of multifunctionality and freedom of movement. A lowered square will be placed in front of Musikhuset, engaging with several of the

enclaves. It’s openness allows for clutural event and gatherings, and thus supports the many surrounding institutions. To channel and pay tribute to Sven Hansen’s garden, which has been placed in the same spot. The existing ponds and pavilions will be kept within the enclaves and thus add to the varying experiences and qualities.

The area is an infrastructural hub, especially for pedestrians. With the coming lightrail even more people will move through the area. Therefore it is important to keep the possibility of fast moving alongside the slow paced experiences. The fast movement will be managed by big clear paths at the most used routes and the broad paths in between the planting enclaves will ensure a good flow across the whole project. The openness of the area allows for spontaneous paths to evolve. Smaller paths within the enclaves will allow for exploring the area at a strolling pace or in play. The changing dense and open structures in turn provide space for informal and private activities as well as bigger gatherings. The area’s open spaces can be used for several events and there is great potential in offering multifunctional spaces for music, art and other cultural happenings. To ensure safety for pedestrians along the road, Frederiks Allé will get a new surface paving, to signal a change in environment to the drivers as well as a speedblock in the form of three of the enclaves that will reach out on the street so the car lane becomes a bit smaller. The pedestrians and cyclists in these places will be guided onto a path through the enclave to ensure their safety. The existing underground carpark by the congresscenter will be expanded, so even more cars can get of the street level.

MATERIALITY AND ATMOSPHERE
The aesthetics and atmosphere of the plantings is inspired by Rådhusparken with its old great trees and classic park structure as well as the many forests around Aarhus which are more dense and wild. The enclaves will be dense with a groundcover reflecting a forest-like motif mixed with ornamental perennials, contained inside their enclave as a garden. The atmosphere outside the enclave will be open, yet divided in smaller spaces created by the enclaves and the buildings.
The project area is home to many iconic buildings in Aarhus which give the area a lot of identity and functions. The enclaves are designed to give each building a space it can utilize as an outdoor space if the building’s purpose calls for it. The project will bring in a lot more plants and trees than what are present today. Especially the area north of Fredriks Allé will become a lot greener with the massive planting material of the enclaves. The enclaves are framed by a concrete wall, wich will bring
som urbanity into Rådhusparken and thereby connect the two areas through common material. The paving will be a mix of gravel and tiles, to reflect both the urban and natural character of the site.
PLANTING STRATEGY AND DEVELOPMENT OVER TIME The project will experiment with planting a great number of trees, and then gradually thinning out, according to the natural development of the trees. This will create a dynamic scenery that
will change throughout the years and reflect the big trees in Rådhusparken and Mølleparken. The species used will vary but will to a great extend reference the existing species. The seasonal changes will come to life though the changing colour of foliage an blooming spring flowers. Ground vegetation and perennials within the enclaves are chosen for their tolerance of shadow as well as their amenity values throughout all seasons. The colour scheme is kept simple and the volumes vary in height and density.

“an overall structure that connects the landscape”
Lysningen acts both as a central park and as a natural pathway from Aarhus Banegård towards Mølleparken, gently integrating the existing flows in and out of the area while promoting walking over cars. The main direction is defined by surrounding paths, terrain alterations and vegetation, while existing and historical elements are meaningfully preserved as a natural part of the park. The physical layout of Mølleparken has inspired the overall structure of the project, taking inspiration from both angular shapes and circles. This project takes place in the hilly heart of Aarhus city center amongst some of the city’s most important institutions and significant landmarks. The green spaces surrounding these attractions are scattered by the lack of coherence and unifying storytelling among them which result in a fragmented landscape. At the same time this large central location of open space holds great potential for a social and cultural meeting point for the citizens and visitors of Aarhus.

Following classical tradition, an arena can be defined as a leveled, large and enclosed floor, with the purpose of showcasing entertainment to the public. The arena laid out in Aarhus draws upon the spatial characteristics of a classic arena, but expands the idea of its function. It’s not created for just one specific purpose, rather, it lays the foundation for a multitude of experiences, capable of catering to different audiences at different times. However, the idea of an arena as an open space (the floor) within an enclosing matter (dense vegetation) remains the main conceptual grip.

Transforming Aarhus hill is an ambitious task. Important institutions, a divided landscape and strong temporal impulses (both past and future) results in a variety of things to consider. Arenaen meets the challenge by focusing on tactility, uncomplicated spatial principles and an integration with the existing landscape. Through the creation of a common floor, surrounded by vegetation, Arenaen presents an opportunity to rethink the space of today, resulting in a vibrant and versatile setting for the city’s inhabitants.

Being both a cultural and physical center in Aarhus, the project area has shaped people’s perception of the city for decades. With this in mind, the project shows consideration for what is already there, by continuing elements deemed important, reusable or functioning. An example can be found in the way Arenaen
approaches Rådhusparken; the structural layout is kept, with additions being a raised edge following the parks western edge and new plantings of trees.
THE FLOOR
The architectural inconsistency between the institutions is tackled through the paving of a central floor, binding several of the
institutions together. It consists of a grid-structure utilizing materials already found throughout Aarhus, such as cobblestones and slotsgrus - here remodeled in rectangles bonded together by pathways in concrete tiles. Since it encompasses Frederiks Allé, the floor’s different pavings can be felt within a car, reminding drivers that they are in some way

close off traffic during weekends or bigger events, creating a safe space for all. To break its conformity, the ‘track’ and the ‘biotopes’ are introduced to the floor. The track’s oval shape, consisting of gravel with lines of in-situ concrete, grabs onto existing buildings and represents a gentle nod to the classical running tracks found in ancient times. Inside the track, one finds the biotopes. These biotopes of natural plantings stand in stark contrast to the otherwise systematic floor, yet relates to the enclosing matter introduced in the bordering greenspaces, as well as to the existing trees of Sven Hansens have.

Combining old and new, structured and organic, the vertical and horizontal, Arenaen has the potential to enhance city-life in central Aarhus. While bringing the project area into the 21th century, it remains a versatile space, capable of incorporating needs that may arise in the future. The approach of reusing materials and existing elements will keep economic and sustainable cost down, as well as continuing the cultural use cherished by current and future inhabitants.

To emphasize the open experience within Arenaen, dense vegetation has been planted in Rådhusparken, the green area next to Aros and the former parking-lot in the south-west. The plantings create a vertical border surrounding Arenaen. This enclosing matter, in contrast to the organic planting-structure of the biotopes, are spread out following a grid-structure. The plantings also function as a recognisable theme throughout the city center.
