Sir Elton began building his collection in 1991 and has acquired 2,500 pieces to date. 150 rare vintage prints on show at the Tate Modern encapsulate the 1920s-50s, with work from Imogen Cunningham, Man Ray and Tina Modotti amongst a whole host of artists. tate.org.uk

ST PAUL’S It’s easy to get wrapped up in gifts — quite literally — over the festive period. We’re all guilty of overlooking the origins of the holiday while trying to prepare for a perfect day, but a trip to the historic and majestic St Paul’s Cathedral is the best way to celebrate. There’s nothing quite like the carol services on 23 and 24 December surrounded by the grandeur of one of London’s most iconic buildings. stpauls.co.uk 18

THE VULGAR:
FASHION REDEFINED Words by LILY WALKER
The word vulgar can have a multitude of meanings but it undeniably equals excess. Through their new exhibition at the Barbican, The Vulgar, Judith Clark and Adam Phillips explore fashion’s longstanding flirtation with flamboyance. Vulgarity might make you think of the perfected portrayal of gluttony in Absolutely Fabulous; too much Bollinger, too many cigarettes, too much food and too much Lacroix. No, actually, you can never have too much Lacroix, sweetie. For Clark, an exhibition-maker, and Phillips, a psychoanalyst, their thought-process behind The Vulgar was — as you’d hope — far more academic. The spark behind the exhibition was, as Clark explains, “Our interest in the word ‘vulgar’ itself and that fashion comes later as a kind of example that seems to be used again and again to protect boundaries of class and taste.” Enter the Barbican’s gallery and you’re confronted with a question. What does the word, so provocative, yet so hard to define, mean to you? “What has happened is a narrowing around the word - as though everyone knows what it means,” says Clark. “What the exhibition tries to do is open that up - to say, ‘well, traditionally it was about the common goods, about vernacular language, about copies in the best sense, distributing ideas and design.’ So what if we look again at fashion through a different set of associations?” And so, you begin on a 500-year journey through the obscene. From John Galliano’s inflatable lips fascinator for Christian Dior, created by Stephen Jones in 2005, way back to the hip crippling, two and a half metre wide 18th Century mantuas 30
ONE NEW CHANGE
and beyond, the mutation of the meaning of vulgar is evident. It’s these dresses Clark outlines as having one of the most vivid intentions in the exhibition. “You can see how extreme it is in relation to the history of dress — Stephen Jones said it puts Punks to shame.” “I like variety in one space at one time,” Clark continues, “that is what excites me, that we can exhibit these relays across time.” Despite some designers having resistance to lending looks for a show with this title (more fool them, after its instant success with critics), there are contributions from Manolo Blahnik, Vivienne Westwood, Jeremy Scott for Moschino, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and Alexander McQueen for Givenchy amongst a myriad of other provocateurs. Has fashion gone as far as fetishizing vulgarity, I ask Clark? As modern audiences are no longer shocked by the risqué, is something that is truly vulgar now desirable? “Fashion has certainly incorporated aspects of the vulgar into its essential vocabulary, and often parodies itself, but the word is persistent so what is it saying about the rules of fashion?”

CARTER LANE GALLERY Words by LILY WALKER
Tucked away behind the Thames on charming Carter Lane, the eponymous new media art gallery is the City’s best kept secret. After undergoing a rebrand and headed up by curator Della Tobias, the space is set to become an intimate hub showcasing both emerging and established artists. Exhibiting his first London show, New York native Don Freeman is showing his abstract photographic collection, The Poetics of Space, from 8 December. We chatted to Della about why Freeman’s work will captivate you and her plans for the Carter Lane Gallery’s bright future. ONC How long have you worked with the gallery? DT I came here at the beginning of September. I was living in
New York for the past five, six years. ONC What does your day-to-day as a curator look like? DT Since I landed here we actually have completely rebranded the gallery. We are still focusing on photography and new media but I’m hoping that on the terrace we’ll have some sculptures. I’m really excited to bring new artists, to give young kids their first shows, group shows and create a buzz. It’s quite a conservative, historic location and I like having that juxtaposition of having something very fresh and new in a location that you wouldn’t necessarily associate the area with. My only criteria really is if it means something, if it has some power to it and if I think that it could change the way people view things. ONC Which artist are you working with for your next exhibition? DT At the moment I’m working with an artist from New York, Don Freeman and he’s a still life photographer. His fine art is something really beautiful that’s very hard to describe. The exhibition title is after one of my favourite books, and I learnt it’s one of his favourite books too, it’s by philosopher/writer Gaston Bachelard and the title is The Poetics of Space. Freeman’s photography can be very abstract, it doesn’t necessarily need to be pictures of architecture or spaces, it can be a flower, it can be time, it’s quite an abstract idea.
it and add to it whatever they feel so that you’re not dictating. Different shows are going to dictate different themes and ideas — but I always look for drama! ONC The gallery is right in the heart of the City, who typically stops by? DT At the moment it’s just through word of mouth and people walking past the gallery. I’m hoping that will change though, and the more shows that we have, and the variety, that we will have people from all walks of life here. ONC Where’s your favourite place to go in London over the festive period? DT Somerset House is really nice, they have the ice rink. I try to see as many films as possible and see as much artwork as possible. ONC If you could have any piece of art given to you for Christmas what would you be hoping to find under the tree? DT I’d like to have a Turner painting. I don’t know which, there’s so many, but it’s interesting that instead of a photograph I’d like a painting. It’s interesting because I’d like a Turner and that’s because he’s a master of light, and that’s what photography is, and film. ONC Do you have a favourite film that you watch at Christmas? DT It’s the one everyone says isn’t it: Life is Beautiful. ONC Do you manage to stick to New Year’s resolutions? DT I do make them, but I make them almost everyday. Do I stick to them? I try to stick to what I set my mind to, so sooner or later they’re stuck to, but it might not be immediately.
ONC What’s the first thing you look for in an artist to exhibit? DT Visually, if it captures me in some way, but it has to go beyond the surface for me. If it’s a show, then which image goes next to which and how could someone move through it? I like to leave things very open to allow the viewer to take from

SWEATY BETTY Words by LILY WALKER
Whether you’ll be starting 2017 by hitting the gym, or watching that membership direct debit leave your account from the comfort of your sofa every month, you might as well look good while you’re doing it. Enter Sweaty Betty, the ath-leisure brand born out of Notting Hill in 1998, that has you covered for home, the gym or the yoga studio. The only way you’re convincing us to wear lycra is if it’s one of Sweaty Betty’s creations. Connecting with the community, each store has its own set of brand ambassadors, spearheading collaborative events and representing them in the local area. We spoke about yoga classes on the Roof Terrace and working up a sweat with the girls fronting the brand at One New Change, trainer Kim Ngo and yoga instructor Dani Hickey.

Who’d have thought a boy who failed his exams aged 16 would go on to found a British tailoring institution? Since 1979, Jeremy Hackett has epitomised classic Brit menswear under his namesake brand. With an eye for the exquisite, cultivated through collecting vintage clothes, Hackett has mastered longevity. Following the recent opening of his latest store in One New Change, Mr Hackett himself shares some pearls of wisdom on tweed and tacky festive ties with us. Remember kids — stay in school — but Hackett is living proof you can still build your own empire without straight A’s.
HACKETT Words by LILY WALKER
ONC You opened your first store on the King’s Road in 1983, do you remember some of the first pieces you sold? JH When I first opened Hackett, I began by selling second hand gentlemen’s clothes and accessories, but of the best quality. I often regret selling some of the memorable pieces that passed through my hands, such as handmade suits from Savile Row and numerous pairs of bespoke shoes, but the rent had to be paid. I once bought a set of Louis Vuitton trunks and suitcases along with a magnificent picnic hamper all for the princely sum of £375 within the hour I had sold them on to a Hollywood prop company for £3500. One day I found a pair of unworn hunting boots on Portobello Road that turned out to have been made for Edward VIII. They were so cheap that I kept them and later they were exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art for a show titled Man and the Horse, they are now on display in our Ginza shop in Tokyo. Within three years we started to make new clothes based on Savile Row style but ready to wear, it was a long way from the fashions of the time but it became incredibly fashionable, I called it “Essential British Kit”. ONC How has the Hackett brand and customer evolved since opening? JH It is only when I look at an original Hackett brochure and compare it to one today that I can see how much the brand has evolved. I like to think that we move the brand along one step at a time, looking at fashion but taking from it what works for Hackett. ONC Why do you think One New Change is the perfect location for your latest store? JH We opened our first shop in the City in 1986; it was our first venture outside of Fulham. It took off immediately, encouraging us to open a couple more shops in the Square Mile. One New Change was a natural choice for Hackett because whilst already having shops fairly nearby, we realise that men working in the City rarely walk more than a few hundred yards from their offices because of time restraints. Another plus point is that being in a mall people can shop comfortably whatever the weather. ONC How long does it take to make one of your signature made-to-measure suits? JH On average it takes between six to eight weeks to make a made-to-measure suit but rather longer if it is fully bespoke. ONC You’re the master of classic menswear! What’s one perfect Christmas party look which will never go out of style?
JH Black tie. ONC Do you have any strong feelings about tacky Christmas jumpers and ties? JH Christmas jumpers possibly, tacky ties never. The scary thing is some men may actually wear one to the office. ONC Do you know what you’ll be wearing on Christmas day yet? JH A tacky Christmas jumper — but only in the house. ONC What pieces should every man have in his wardrobe? JH A tailored navy blue suit, black tie and morning dress, because you never know what occasion you may be invited to. ONC Is it risky business to try and guess someone’s clothing tastes while present shopping? Would you recommend going bold or keeping it classic? JH I think it is fun to challenge people’s clothing taste, if they are flamboyant buy something classic and vice versa. ONC Which are your top five favourite things in store right now? JH We have a range of beautiful Geelong lamb’s wool sweaters that feel like cashmere. I would buy all five colours. There is a very smart camel double-breasted overcoat (and no, it doesn’t look like Arthur Daley) and a great London made trench coat made from Ventile cotton. Knitted waistcoats to wear under a tweed jacket and a colourful assortment of shooting socks are perfect stocking fillers. ONC How does Christmas day look in your household? JH Chaotic! ONC Have you ever managed to stick to a New Year’s resolution? JH I never make them. ONC Do you have a favourite Christmas carol? JH “7 O’clock News/Silent Night” by Simon and Garfunkel, it is incredibly moving and thought provoking. ONC Do you have a favourite festive film? JH The Bishop’s Wife because it stars two of Hollywood’s best dressed men: Cary Grant and David Niven. ONC Best gift to give or receive? JH I would like to receive Hackett dog leads and collars for my Sussex Spaniels, Harry and Muffin. I like to give presents to my friends, who upon opening them politely say, “Thank you,” and then ask, “What is it?”

TED’S GROOMING ROOM
Hairdresser dread manifests in different forms. First and foremost is the worry whether your trim is going to come out like the million dollar look you’ve planned in your mind, secondly, what if your small talk isn’t up to scratch? If you’ve not been on holiday in the last six months, what on earth are you going to talk about? Ismail Mus, founder of refined gentlemen’s establishment, Ted’s Grooming Room, is making that dread a thing of the past. Sit back and relax in expert hands, with a beer or glass of Champagne, and get coiffed to perfection (beards and moustaches included). Barbering runs in the Mus family, and Ted’s does things the proper Turkish way — relaxed with an unrivalled attention to detail. We sat down with Mus to find out the best way for men to be pampered at the One New Change store pre-Christmas. After all, it’s not just about the ladies!
Words by LILY WALKER
ONC Do you remember the day you opened Ted’s Grooming Room? IM Yes, it was a turning point in my life in 2008 and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. ONC What inspired you to set up Ted’s Grooming Room? IM Barbering comes within the family so it’s always been a part of my life and something that’s inspired me. ONC Since you opened, what’s the most significant change in styles and requests you’ve noticed? IM This changes quite often with the trends, but at the moment beard styling is a popular request. ONC What or who are your key audiences and how do you cater for them? IM Men of all ages who like to stay trim and proper. Our One New Change store attracts guys working in the City who are always on the go. ONC When we come in for our pre-Christmas pamper, what can we expect? IM Top notch service from our master barbers offering sharp cuts, clean shaves, beard trims and brow threading, of course with an ice cold beer or glass of Champagne. ONC When do you begin to get into the festive mood in stores? IM We tend to get into the festive spirit around mid-November where you’ll see our windows spruced up and our exclusive gift boxes available. ONC How about at home? IM I think once summer is over and winter creeps up on us we start focusing on the whole Christmas period. So mentally we start really early. ONC What’s going on in the One New Change store over the festive season? 44
ONE NEW CHANGE
IM Festive spirit, top quality treatments and lots of Champagne! ONC Which of the grooming gift packages available would you recommend? IM “Cut A Dash With Ted” Ted’s master cut is followed by a hottowel treatment and clean shave or beard design. Fully pamper yourself or a loved one! ONC What’s at the top of your wish list this Christmas? IM A holiday! ONC What’s your favourite Christmas tradition? IM It’s got to be a traditional Christmas roast. ONC What’s the best gift you’ve ever received? IM My first scissors that my grandfather gifted me. ONC Do you have any New Year’s resolutions? And do you manage to stick to them? IM To open more Ted’s Grooming Room stores in 2017, something I’ll definitely be sticking to! ONC Do you have a favourite festive film? IM Home Alone. ONC Expecting under the tree? IM More movies. ONC Best gift to give or receive? IM A Ted’s Grooming Room gift voucher. ONC Who’s the hardest person to shop for? IM Myself.
