CLOUD
Graduate Thesis In Progress | Individual work Tutor:Heinrich Schnoedt
Inspired by clouds and water streams - things constantly changing in nature, the project asks the question of how architecture could embrace fluidity and have control of it under different circumstances in the context of a contemporary urban environment. In order to explore many of the tensions that defines architecture's relationship with contemporary city, the project's site is located near Dupont Circle in Washington D.C. The project asks how could a architecture with fluidity could be inspired and affects the site at the same time. The project begins with designing a pattern using bended wood strips to see how they afftect each other in space. To explore more on the idea, more research have been made via bending paper strips with different thicknesses in both horizontal and vertical plans later on. In this project, architecture will attempt to find the answer about fluid space fit for contemporary conditions.

Virginia Tech Winery Spring 2017 | Individual work Tutor:Heinrich Schnoedt Building Area:860 ft² Located near 460 highway in Virginia Tech campus, This winery is designed to serve the university needs on wine making and research. Inspired by wood slices from barrels, the three-wing winery opens arms to the vineyard and highway. Perforated corrugated metal sheets are used on the facade and steel beams and trusses are used as the structure.

LIGHT STUDY
The idea comes from the camera Ansel Adams used. Six cubes with different size form the sequence to frame the duck pond’s scene. Since the architecture has very strong sequence, I want the light could help strengthen this idea. So for the light design, I focus on the depth of the light. By using skylight in each cube, the way to the end of the architecture is highlighted. In addition, the size of skylight becomes smaller and smaller, which could be considered as a strategy to strengthen the depth as well.
With the purpose to maintain the completeness of both west and east facades, louvers are chosen to be used in this building instead of ordinary openings with glasses. Louvers with different height are designed to creat better ventilation inside. To make best use of the wind, the building is positioned to be perpendicular to the strongest wind direction.

Nanjing Qilin Middle School Unergraduate Thesis | individual work Tutor:Feng LIU Building Area:163,353 ft² This site is situated at southeast of Nanjing, a suburban area that is under construction to become a high-tech development zone in the near future. What challenge this middle school faces is not only to provide rooms for more students to come, but also cater to revolution in education both in class and out of class. These buildings were constructed in 1980s. It only satisfieses minimum teaching requirements. Obviously, more functions and space should be included in the new school.

There exits almost one level height difference between the school and town street. Students have to go to classrooms via open slope first everyday, which is inconvient in rainy days.

Fall 2016 | Individual work Tutor:Scott Gartner Building Area:25,833ft² Floyd is a very small town but famous for kinds of music, attracting thousands of visitors every year. SPACE INSERTION HIGH-RISE OFFICE BUILDING Fall 2014 | Individual work Tutor: Weiyu ZHANG Building Area:132,826 ft² The site is located in the central of newly-built Nanjing Hexi business district. With two metro lines, the traffic is convenient. Surrounded mainly by office buildings and residential areas, however, the site is short of facilities to improve life quality. At the same time, modern office buildings are no longer a working place only, but a place where people spend most of their daytime. Thus, in this proposal, a solution to create a dynamic vertical woing space is persued.
