Quick tips WHAT ARE THE STORE HOURS?
One aspect that makes our community so unique is that each of our stores are independently owned and operated – no franchises! Each store has its own set of hours.
WHERE ARE THE RESTROOMS?
Public restrooms are located at the Visitors Center, 100 Milwaukee Rd, right on the bike trail; the Community Center, 202 Parkway Ave S. Seasonal restrooms are available in the Sylvan Park Campground bathhouse, Riverview Campground, Bass Pond parking lot, and at the softball fields.
WHAT CAN WE DO OUTSIDE?
What can’t you do outside?! There is walking and biking on the 60-miles of paved Root River State Bike Trail; fishing, canoeing, tubing and kayaking on the river; self-guided walking tours around town; hiking at nearby Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center; enjoy a walk through our historic neighborhoods; take a tour at the Lanesboro State Fish Hatchery; or enjoy a picnic and playground at Sylvan Park.
Be sure to stop by the Visitors Center on the trail, 100 Milwaukee Rd, for a map of the trail, Lanesboro and of Minnesota. You can also find a place to stay, menus and event announcements. Most of our business establishments also have maps available for you to take.

The Lanesboro Loop Exploring Lanesboro by foot or bicycle is an engaging and rewarding experience. Exploration at your own pace is certainly part of the culture here. Although once you’re downtown, it can be easy to overlook some of Lanesboro’s most creative and aesthetically pleasing assets. So grab your family and friends, put on your walking (or biking) shoes and embark on this non-exhaustive insider’s guide to the “Lanesboro Loop.” MEDALLION TOUR – A game of creative hide-and-seek and a social studies lesson all in one, this tour features 20 iron medallions throughout town that portray different aspects of the rich character of Lanesboro. Pick up your map at the Visitors Center or Lanesboro Arts Gallery. SCENIC CHURCH HILL OVERLOOK – From the Visitors Center, go up Kenilworth Ave N to the summit of “Church Hill”. A cozy bench here provides a vantage point to enjoy a breathtaking view overlooking Sylvan Park and Lanesboro Dam. HISTORIC PHONE BOOTH – This decommissioned phone booth was relocated to the Lanesboro Museum and repurposed as a storytelling kiosk. Pick up the phone and press a number to hear a story about Lanesboro’s rich past. THE BUNNY TRAIL – While this hiking trail at Sylvan Park, originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, is still in the process of being refurbished, it is a hidden gem for the adventurous. Entrance is near the RV area of the Campground.
SEPT 8 FALL CRAFT BEER FEST

“COLORS OF BLUFF COUNTRY” COMMUNITY MURAL – A peek behind the St. Mane Theatre will reveal a large-scale mural honoring the community’s heritage and creativity. Collaboratively designed and painted by community members, local kids and professional artists, it’s a great photo op! COFFEE STREET WALKING BRIDGE – Take Coffee St W to the river. On your way, see an inventive window replacement on the Pedal Pushers building. These community produced glass mosaics represent the many aspects of Lanesboro. The restored bridge, originally a railway bridge, is the safest way for pedestrians to get over the river. Continue over the bridge, through Gateway Park to the Poetry Parking Lot at the Bass Pond. THE COMMONWEAL STASH – Lanesboro native and nationally-recognized artist, Karl Unnash has created an engrossing permanent installation consisting of suspended found elements, interactive dioramas and vitrines that encompass the foyer, lobby and rest rooms of the Commonweal Theatre – available to view anytime the box office is open. HIDDEN SCENIC DAM OVERLOOK – Most people know how to enjoy the Lanesboro Dam more closely: from the foot of the dam or from above at the Riverview Campground. Less known is the porch overlook. Go west on Kirkwood St W past the picket fence. Visitors are welcome, but this overlook is privately owned by the Thompson House – so be respectful!

A Community Rooted in the Arts Thirty years ago the Berlin Wall fell, gas cost less than a dollar a gallon, New Kids on the Block topped the charts, Miss Daisy and her driver took home an Oscar...and the Commonweal Theatre Company opened in Lanesboro, as a program of the volunteer Lanesboro Arts Council. Still a sleepy little burg in 1989, the Root River Bike Trail was just starting to gain its reputation as a Cadillac of the state trail systems. That first season the Commonweal produced two plays with 10 artists over 11 weeks in a converted movie theatre on the main street. In no time, a collective of visual artists came together to form the Cornucopia Arts Center. Soon after, a group of like-minded folks used a Valentine’s Day concert to launch Over the Back Fence, Lanesboro’s own live variety radio program. By 2007 the Commonweal had outgrown its first home in the historic St.

All about the Driftless... Visitors to Lanesboro often fall in love with its picturesque hills and winding streams; modern evidence of a unique geologic past.
all the way to St. Cloud. When exposed to water Limestone dissolves, causing voids to form in the rock. The resulting network of cracks cause the formation sinkholes, springs and caves, features of what is called a “Karst landscape.” Only 25% of Minnesota, and the world, are considered Karst landscapes.
10,000 years ago, a visitor to Lanesboro looking north would have seen a monster wall of ice nearly 1 mile high. All around them, streams created by the massive melting glacier would be trickling while 50 mph winds swirled around carrying silt (called loess) across the landscape. While most parts of the Upper Midwest were buried under glacial deposits called “drift”, we were the recipient of erosional forces that carved and shaped our bluffs and valleys and is the reason we are called the Driftless Area. Our hilly, streamladen landscape stands in contrast to the flatter, “lakier” areas surrounding it. Deep under the driftless also lies another unique geologic story and one that continues to be written today. Underneath the bluffs, farm fields, and storefronts sit layers of limestone bedrock, remnants of a prehistoric sea that once covered southeast Minnesota
MORE at lanesboro.com!
Winning this geologic lottery makes Lanesboro one of the most unique and biodiverse areas in the Upper Midwest. According to the Root River Watershed Landscape Stewardship Plan, we are home to plants and animals not found anywhere else in the state with “111 species of state-listed rare plants and animals. Thanks to this diversity, our area is also highly regarded for turkey and deer hunting along with trout fishing, hiking and biking.” So when visiting Lanesboro, know that your stay has literally been thousands of years in the making. We hope it rocks!

Whalan, The Little Town That Could Located on the Root River State Bike Trail, just 4 1/2 miles east of Lanesboro, the quaint town of Whalan is the smallest town on the trail. Visitors can’t help but notice the picturesque view of the beautiful Root River valley and surrounding lime stone bluffs. Although Whalan is small, don’t let the size fool you as it has much to offer visitors. Whalan affords bikers a gazebo, playground with basketball court and picnic area for a nice respite before continuing your journey. A visit to the Whalan Museum will provide you an opportunity to learn more of the town’s heritage.
Whalan is noted for its famous Pie Shoppe and the Stand Still Parade which is held annually the third Saturday in May. The parade stands still while the spectators move. Spend the day enjoying food, music, games and maybe even find that special something at one of the many vendor booths. Find more at standstillparade.org While our summer season starts with the Stand Still Parade, our fall season begins with Taste of the Trail, the first Saturday after Labor Day. Taste of the Trail provides samples of ethnic foods, music and other activities. More information at rootrivertrail.org Don’t miss out on your opportunity to visit Whalan. Welcome and enjoy!
On the first Saturday in February, bundle up for Whalan’s Candlelight Ski. Cross country skiers and walkers can enjoy the experience of luminaries lighting up a 1/2 mile of the Root River State Trail. Stop at our town hall and enjoy a soup and sandwich supper.
