Quick tips
WHAT ARE THE STORE HOURS?
One aspect that makes our community so unique is each of our stores are independently owned and operated – no franchises! Each store and restaurant has its own set of hours.
WHERE ARE THE RESTROOMS?
Public restrooms are located at the Visitors Center right on the bike trail downtown and at the Community Center, 202 Parkway Ave S, next to Sylvan Park. Seasonal restrooms are available in the Sylvan Park Campground bathhouse, Riverview Campground, Bass Pond parking lot, and at the softball field.
WHAT CAN WE DO OUTSIDE?
What can’t you do outside? There is walking and biking on the paved, 60 mile Root River State Bike Trail; fishing, canoeing, tubing and kayaking on the river; self-guided walking tours around town; golfing at two local courses and hiking at nearby Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center. Wander through our historic neighborhoods; take a tour at the Lanesboro State Fish Hatchery; or enjoy a picnic, basketball game, tennis match, the ponds or the playground at Sylvan Park.
WHERE CAN I FIND A MAP?
Be sure to stop by the Visitors Center, downtown on the trail, for maps of the trail, Lanesboro and of Minnesota. You can also find a place to stay, menus and event announcements. Most of our business establishments also have maps available.

IT’S RAINING, NOW WHAT?
Enjoy the Lanesboro experience even when it’s not nice outdoors. Explore nature indoors at Niagara Cave with a 60-foot waterfall or Mystery Cave. Visit the National Trout Center or the International Owl Center. Learn about our Amish neighbors, visit museums and art galleries. Of course, there is always shopping and enjoying some adult beverages. Check out the “What to Do” page on lanesboro.com for more great ideas.

The Root River State Trail A bustling community with a vibrant art scene, a variety of restaurants and an abundance of charming lodging establishments, Lanesboro is the unofficial hub of the 60 mile Root River State Trail System, a cyclist’s paradise that weaves through a picturesque valley of green canopies, limestone bluffs, quaint villages and open farmland. The trail system is comprised of two different trails that link nine distinctive towns, each a short distance apart. The result is several 5 to 13 mile segments of smooth asphalt that provide a variety of options for bike riders and rollerbladers. From families with young children and pleasure riders traveling the relatively flat 20-minute journey from Lanesboro to the Aroma Pie Shoppe in Whalan (the smallest trail town at pop. 67) to serious cyclists and adventurers scaling the steeper sections going east along curves into Houston (home of the International Owl Center) or traveling south on hills into Harmony, the Root River State Trail System offers a variety of outstanding vantage points and stops for riders of all skill and intensity levels.
providing both tranquil views and easy access for kayakers, canoers, tubers and fishers. Foodies and craft beer enthusiasts are encouraged to travel west from Lanesboro for a stop at the restaurant at Old Barn Resort, and then on past Isinours Junction (and up a mild incline) to Fountain. Those same cyclists should also plan a ride during one or all of the three Saturdays after Labor Day for “Taste of the Trail,” when trail towns serve up a taste of their communities through different activities, food, music and events. Lanesboro’s weekend ride begins in Peterson, a small community with an particularily festive “Taste of the Trail” experience. Then be sure to pedal your way back to Lanesboro by the afternoon for our Craft Beer Fest. For more about the communities along the trail system see the "Our Neighbors" section below or visit rootrivertrail.org.
Wildlife is abundant, and sightings of wild turkey, deer, hawks and turkey vultures are common. The entire trail system entices birders. The 42-mile Root River State Trail segment, of which Lanesboro is at the center, runs along an abandoned railroad line that often hugs the river,
