T he S i t e _ Situated on a bed of ancient ruins in the heart of Rome, the site presented a unique challenge. In order to keep the ruins intact, the new structure must either be suspended above the ruins or the footprint of the structure must be drastically reduced. The Block takes careful consideration of the ruins and the context in which they are placed.

“Yet in Rome context is inescapable, and Mr. Meier’s building seems intent on shunning the city’s seductive charms.” -Nicolai Ouroussoff The New York Times

The continued defacing of the stark white walls of the Ara Pacis museum by Rome’s dispirited citizens has created reason to amend the design of the facade which citizens believe turns its back to Rome’s robust history. This pavilion shall serve to appease locals and restore their faith in Rome’s historic culture. 34

As seen in the diagram above, the Ara Pacis is no longer located on its original site. In designing the pavilion for the museum, careful consideration of the historical context in which the museum lies was taken.

DE路FACE is a transient response to the outcry of Roman Citizens. For years Romans have unceasingly vandalized the blank white facade of the Ara Pacis Museum in hopes of being heard. They act in outrage, in anger, and in discontent. The white wall turns its back to the vibrant context in which it lies.
