Exploring First Nations. Carly Wignes, Journalism Alumna Carly Wignes has pursued her interest in Aboriginal issues throughout her post-secondary education, earning a master’s degree in political science from the University of Victoria. Her thesis focused on why some First Nations groups settle treaties through the BC treaty process while others do not. Carly enrolled in Journalism at Langara to work directly with the First Nations community and to gain hands-on skills that would later apply to her career. Upon graduating from Langara’s accelerated program in Journalism, she was awarded the first annual Read-Mercer fellowship – a $10,000 grant – in March 2012, which supported her in creating her series of articles on how territorial disputes affect First Nations communities and treaty settlements. “Langara’s fellowship program provided a perfect platform for me to start a career. I was able to meet First Nations community members and leaders as well as expert journalists. The experience gave me the skills I needed to secure the position I have now.” Carly’s series was published in the prestigious Canadian online magazine The Tyee in 2012.

Charting his path.

Rolling out a business.

Justin Lai, BBA Alumnus

Boris Martin, BBA Alumnus

Like most high-school students, Justin Lai wasn’t sure what he wanted to do when he graduated. Entering a four-year program would be a significant commitment, but going directly into the work force might limit future opportunities. Instead, he took a variety of courses through Langara’s universitytransfer program.

When he was a student in Langara’s Bachelor of Business Administration Program, Boris Martin began drafting a business plan. An avid cyclist and bicycle mechanic, he realized that while innovation in technology had resulted in faster and lighter bikes, bicycle repair service had remained relatively unchanged. Boris envisioned a mobile bicycle repair shop that would deliver all the services of a bike shop right to the customer’s door.

“I chose Langara because a transition into university right out of high school would be a major jump, so instead I chose an environment where I could ease into my educational journey rather than jumping right into the deep end.” During his second semester, Justin took a Business Law course that helped him chart a new path. After augmenting his studies with a few marketing classes, he transferred to university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business. However, he found he missed Langara’s small class sizes and personal interaction, so he soon returned to Langara to complete a degree in Business Administration. After graduating in 2013, Justin began his dream career with the Vancouver Canucks. “I know it’s an unconventional story of transferring only to come full circle, but I am so glad I did because that was when my Langara experience really exploded and contributed to who I am today.”

After graduating in 2012, Boris put his plan into action, incorporating Velofix Holdings Ltd. Starting with a single truck, the world’s first fully-integrated mobile bicycle repair shop was born. Velofix grew 400% in its first year, and is now selling franchises nationwide and looking to expand into the United States. Boris was recently named one of BC’s “30 Under 30” by BC Business magazine. “The BBA program was preparing us to be entrepreneurs. In hindsight, I don’t think I could have started this business without my education at Langara. The program helped me develop a well-rounded understanding of business and business practices. From accounting to human resources, to forecasting and stats, I am confident to say that without my education at Langara, I wouldn’t have had the skills and abilities to launch this business with the same success or speed.”

Education heats up. Kelly Sveinson, Chemistry Instructor Chemistry instructor Kelly Sveinson adds a hands-on dimension to his teaching by involving students in cutting-edge applied research with Langara’s biochar project. With a grant from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and assistance from industry partner McCue Engineering Contractors, students work with an on-campus reactor and use analytical chemistry techniques to evaluate the use of biochar as a material to clean up waste water. To conduct his research, Kelly designed the custom biochar experimental reactor that resides on the Langara campus. In another project, Kelly and his students convert solid waste into biochar to evaluate its potential to mitigate the effects of climate change, using the biochar as a solid fuel. The team also uses a designated area of the Langara Community Garden to evaluate the potential of biochar as a means of improving the quality of the soil. “Students at larger universities don’t get the chance to participate in research projects in their first or second year, but we can leverage that opportunity because of our size and connections. Science is about proving and disproving theories, not just reading textbooks. As an advanced education institution, we want to encourage knowledge exploration – to contribute to the body of knowledge, rather than simply reiterate what is already known.”

Sciences A second chance. Dustin Paul, Criminal Justice Alumnus At the age of 19, Dustin Paul’s world was turned upside down. A motorcycle accident left him a quadriplegic with no motor function in his wrists and hands. After three difficult years trying to adapt to his new reality, Dustin realized he had to move on with his life, and decided to enrol in the Criminal Justice Program at Langara. The decision left him with a fresh set of issues to overcome. “How would I get there in time for classes each morning? How would I take my coat off? How would I eat lunch? How would I take notes? I soon discovered that most post-secondary institutions in BC have a disability resource centre, and I immediately began to work with Langara’s to find answers to my questions. To my surprise, the centre had all the bases covered—from note taking and scheduling, to in-class accommodations and even attendant care. Before I knew it I had a fresh new laptop and was in the front row of a class of 30 strangers listening to a lecture…. Then something shocking happened. I began to enjoy myself.”

Read more of Dustin’s story at thisislangara.ca

Dustin quickly rose to the top of his program with a 4.0 GPA, eventually completing his BA at SFU and his law degree at UBC. Along the way, he earned an array of scholarships and awards, including the 2010 Terry Fox Gold Medal. Dustin has just been called to the bar and is putting his legal education to use in helping other persons that have been injured while alleviating barriers for people with disabilities.

A helping hand. Samantha Watson, Education Assistant Alumna Samantha Watson discovered at an early age that she had a gift for working with others who needed a helping hand. As a Special Education Assistant in the British Columbia school system, Sam is helping specialneeds students transition from high school into a training program or the workplace. Contracting meningitis as a premature baby, Sam’s hearing loss and joint issues gave her the insight and compassionate edge that she used to tap into the needs of those who couldn’t always speak for themselves. “In school, the teachers loved me because I would spend time with the students who couldn’t or wouldn’t communicate normally. I learned sign language from the Special Education Assistants that were assigned to my classmates, and would use it to help explain their lessons to them. I always knew how to put a smile on their faces, by finding out what was important to them and connecting with them on their level. My teachers would often place me beside these classmates because they knew I’d help them to communicate.”

Read more of Samantha’s story at thisislangara.ca

When she learned about the Education Assistant Program at Langara, she thought it was a perfect fit. After graduation, she began working right away in the New Westminster School District and as an Instructional Facilitator at Douglas College, before accepting a position with the Maple Ridge School District. As a behavioural interventionist, Samantha is using her education to help guide her kids to exhibit more socially-accepted behaviours, and in some cases, to learn how to advocate for themselves.

Goat Money gives women a future. Catherine Glass, Biology Instructor and Kasey Moran, Biology Alumna In 2006, Biology and Health Sciences Instructor Catherine Glass established a program to raise money for a group of mothers in the small Kenyan village of Olkoroi as part of her PhD work on public health. The idea was to provide livestock as a means of income for women, helping to empower them in a male-dominated society that sees women denied education and married off at a young age. Inspired by the work Catherine was doing, biology student Kasey Moran partnered with her sister Korey to launch an annual art auction called “Goat Money”. The funds raised go towards purchasing goats for the women of Olkoroi. Goats are an important form of currency in Kenya, allowing the women to pay for items such as food and school fees, as well as providing them with a source of income by selling milk and breeding new offspring. “As a mother, an educator, and a feminist, I have enormous admiration for the women in Olkoroi, their work ethic, the care they provide for their families, the support they provide to the local primary school, and the lengths that some women will go to support their children – particularly daughters, because girls face more obstacles in a traditional community.” – Catherine Glass

To date, the microcredit program has raised more than $20,000, helping more than 350 female participants improve their lives and the lives of their children.
