“The program offers all the practical knowledge you need to start doing bookkeeping. The flexibility of the course offerings allowed me to keep a full-time job while completing courses.” - TEYA MALI | PROFESSIONAL BOOKKEEPER GRADUATE 2009

PROGRAM UPDATES FOR ACCOUNTING & FINANCE Last year, the Certified Management Accountants, Certified General Accountants, and Institute of Chartered Accountants merged to create one single Canadian accounting association: the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA). Langara Continuing Studies has always been responsive to changes that affect our students. Two new courses are being introduced to the Advanced Accounting Certificate: Strategy for Financial Managers and Intermediate Accounting Systems. The courses replace Accounting Theory 1 and Business Case 2 to better align with current association requirements, and integrate accounting software to provide a more practical experience. Students can now complete all courses through Langara Continuing Studies to qualify for the CPA’s Professional Education Program. Strategy for Financial Managers exposes students to the current trends in theory and application of strategic management with a focus on financial implications. Intermediate Accounting Systems puts theory into practice by focusing on computerized tools related to audit planning, taxation preparation, and advanced Excel features. Both courses will be offered starting in January 2015. Whether you are self-employed, changing careers, or upgrading skills, our accounting programs will help you advance in your career path.

[ KRISTY’S WORK ]

KRISTY RYAN INSIGHT ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM This Photography program changed my life, and I attribute it to

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN FALL 2014

Langara. It wasn’t until I finished seven years of university and

DIGITAL MEDIA

started my first year as an elementary teacher that I really explored

PHOTOGR APHY

photography. A friend asked me to take a night class with her and I was instantly hooked. I loved working with other creative people and making ideas come to life. When I wanted to take photography more seriously, I did some research and everyone said Langara was the best. And they were right. I liked the balance between classroom learning

COMMERCIAL ILLUSTR ATION PERFORMING ARTS DIGITAL FILM

and hands-on studio time. I learned that I could make a living in

PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR FILM & TV

photography because the instructors were working photographers.

SINGER-SONGWRITER

Because I was teaching during the day, the night classes were perfect for me. You can learn a lot online, especially in photography. But that face-toface connection with my classmates and instructors was invaluable. Both were a wealth of knowledge and gave me hands-on learning and experiences that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. For example, I opened

DIGITAL MUSIC PRODUCTION CREATIVE WRITING ADVERTISING COPYWRITING ADVERTISING & DESIGN

my first studio with a classmate. We did weekly creatives together to

VISUAL ARTS

increase our skills. Another classmate introduced me to the idea of

IDEATION & CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

being a wedding photographer. Finally, it was with another student from Langara that I started my wedding photography business. Without these people, I might not be where I am today. I pinch myself daily because I can’t believe that I’m really living my dream.

“Internet usage by seniors is increasing. Studies confirm that older adults who use the internet tend to feel less lonely and more socially connected.” - RAYMOND CHOW | PROGRAM COORDINATOR

PROGRAM UPDATES FOR PLUS 50 There is a range of benefits for seniors who ‘stay connected’ via the internet. Programs such as email, Skype, and social media can reduce isolation for those living far from family and friends, and for people who are home-bound. For people who have difficulty getting out, shopping online can be convenient and might offer independence. Information available on quality websites can provide opportunities for ongoing learning in areas such as healthy aging research. Not surprisingly, internet usage by seniors is increasing. Studies confirm that older adults who use the internet tend to feel less lonely and more socially connected. Current figures from Statistics Canada show that 70 per cent of people over the age of 65 were regularly online in 2012. The Tapestry Foundation for Health Care recently sponsored a public forum focusing on ‘silver surfers’ as part of its Dialogue on Aging series. Raymond Chow, program coordinator and instructor at Langara, was a panelist and provided tips on developing skills for today’s digital age, including how to reduce risks related to internet usage, such as scams. Another panelist Marilyn Thorsteinsson, 82, noted: “I think my generation is really on the lookout for what we can do to exercise our minds, and by advancing our computer skills, this can provide new avenues of interest and stimulation.” Langara Continuing Studies’ Plus 50 program provides an option for learning about computers and related technology in a low stress, selfpaced environment. “... the organic horticulture movement is not only here to stay, but growing, as people look to cultivate and live in a healthy environment.” - AMANDA JARRETT | ORGANIC LANDSCAPE GARDENER INSTRUCTOR

AMANDA JARRETT ORGANIC LANDSCAPE GARDENER INSTRUCTOR Amanda Jarrett’s love of plants and nature has been a lifelong passion, and one she has turned into a rewarding career in the horticultural industry. After studying horticulture in college, she embarked on a journey to explore the world of plants, from the far north to the tropical south. Eventually settling in Greater Vancouver, Amanda became an organic land care professional with training from Gaia College and built up her own successful consulting company. She teaches numerous organic horticulture courses to adults and does freelance writing and plant photography on the side. After being in the horticulture industry for many years, Amanda is thrilled to bring her experience to Langara - teaching Organic Master Gardening, one of the core courses of the Organic Landscape Management Certificate Program. She enjoys seeing students grasp the importance of this extremely relevant field of study; no student is untouched by its wisdom and logic. Langara’s Organic Landscape Certificate Management Program provides critical information and techniques required to be successful in all avenues of horticulture. Landscapers learn how to adopt organic practices, while gardeners and farmers discover how to grow organic produce without using pesticides. Homeowners learn they don’t need a huge garden or chemicals to produce tasty and healthy fruit and vegetables. Amanda is adamant that the organic horticulture movement is growing as people look to cultivate and live in a healthy environment.

“LEAP allowed me to reconsider my goals...my LEAP instructors encouraged me to pursue my dream.” - ASUKA SUGIYAMA | LEAP GRADUATE, 2012

ASUKA SUGIYAMA - LANGARA ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES GRADUATE I started in LEAP two years ago when I arrived in Canada. I still remember the first couple of days when I was too shy to talk to any classmates and overwhelmed by the amount of assignments the instructors gave. Throughout my LEAP journey, I met many passionate, kind, and funny instructors. In each session I also had fun chatting with my classmates. Since completing the program, I still have lunch or hang out with the friends I made in LEAP. LEAP allowed me to reconsider my goals. My instructors taught me various skills to succeed in college and university, such as note-taking, research, and presentation skills. I gained so much confidence in using English for my studies, especially the research paper I wrote on globalization and cultural diversity. After researching and writing this paper, I decided to study international relations in university. I was already interested in this field, but my LEAP instructors encouraged me to pursue my dream. Without the LEAP Program, I don’t think I could keep my grades high in my university-transfer courses at Langara. LEAP is the place not only for studying academic English, but also for getting to know people who introduce you to a whole new life in Vancouver, or who stand next to you and help you when you struggle. The LEAP Program is definitely worth taking.

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are a dynamic and student-centred learning environment where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.
