“The program offers all the practical knowledge you need to start doing bookkeeping. The flexibility of the course offerings allowed me to keep a full-time job while completing courses.” Teya Mali | Professional Bookkeeper Gr aduate 2009

Accounting & Finance When Teya Mali’s accountant suggested she start her own bookkeeping business, Teya’s research led her to Langara. “I looked up courses for the program and saw that Langara’s Professional Bookkeeper Certificate would give me the foundation to start a bookkeeping business. The flexibility of the course offering - evenings and weekends - allowed me to keep a full-time job while completing courses without having to take out student loans. It was exactly what I was looking for.” Teya started the program in September 2008, and completed the courses within eight months. Within a year of graduating, Teya started her own bookkeeping business, focusing on small businesses. “It is so fulfilling to see our clients succeed partially as a result of the valuable support that we provide to them. With all the experience we have now, I feel confident being a trusted adviser to our clients in a wide variety of topics. The program offers all the practical knowledge you need to start doing bookkeeping for small businesses. Every single business needs bookkeeping whether they are profitable or not, and every individual needs to file a tax return.” Teya’s success since opening her business over five years ago has confirmed her career choice.

Successfully launching a new Continuing Studies program requires an expert in the field of study – somebody who is familiar with the industry, passionate, and willing to build from

digital media

the ground up. For Langara’s Commercial Illustration Certificate

Program, Jeff Burgess was just that person.

commercial illustr ation

A successful freelance artist behind brands like Shaftebury Brewing, Molson, and Sobeys, as well as an experienced instructor, Jeff had a wealth of expertise to offer prospective illustration students. While the role of developing and coordinating the new program was a daunting one, he took the plunge and launched it in 2011. “I tell my students about the importance of time management in being successful, and I’ve had to put that into practice. Along with working at Langara, I teach courses in illustration, life drawing, and applied illustration. But what could be better than being responsible for the education of students in a field you are well versed in? I like the idea of passing on the knowledge you have accumulated to those who follow.” With the support of the College community, Jeff turned the fledgling illustration series into a growing and successful addition to the Applied Arts programming area. Now entering its third year under Jeff’s watchful eye, the program continues to grow both in size and reputation as graduates begin to emerge.

English as a Second Language When I first came to Canada, all I wanted to do was study English. But studying English required much more than I expected. In the LEAP Program, I was constantly being challenged. LEAP not only improved my English, but also taught the importance of critical thinking and the knowledge that is necessary to practice it. Completing this program gave me a sense of confidence that I needed as a young international student.

After graduating from LEAP in 2008, I studied in the University Transfer program at Langara. I then transferred to York University where I’m doing a double major in Human Rights and Equity Studies, and Political Science. As a political science student, I’ve been facing the complicated reality of world politics and I’m sure that I will keep learning about it forever. I am now taking a year-off from school and starting an internship program at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Tokyo. I am very excited and looking forward to what this will lead to in the future. My advice for you is to stay open-minded, to others as well as yourself. LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are a dynamic and student-centred learning environment where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Health & Human Services I never thought that I would become a certified yoga teacher at

the age of 29. Despite my love for yoga, it was something I thought I’d reserve for later, when I had more life experience. But now, as a teacher, I have deepened my understanding of the practice and how it weaves into the other parts of my life. It allows me to live more fully and with balance in a society of constant change. I enrolled in the Yoga Teacher Training Program because it was the only program I found that explored all levels of yoga, teaching them from a traditional and classical perspective. It encouraged me to truly connect with my practice. Many programs offered shorter, more intense certification, but Langara’s is creatively structured over six months, allowing me to integrate the teachings into my life and make a change. The program is holistic, supportive, and change-inspiring. The instructors foster a community of peers who are with you through a transformational experience.

In so many ways, my yoga journey has allowed me to better connect with all areas of my life. Who would have thought rolling out your yoga mat could do all that?

“Spending time outdoors, gardening to produce your own food, exploring opportunities for “green exercise” – for me, this is what sustainable communities are all about in Vancouver.” Ann kent | instructor

Sustainable Communities Sustainable communities are full of passionate and committed people who inspire change and contribute to their communities’ economic, environmental, and social well-being. To study sustainable development is to address the human, natural, and economic challenges of our time, discover new ways of thinking, and explore a more balanced and harmonious relationship with our world. Sustainable solutions are found through integrated approaches – as opposed to fragmented ones that meet one goal at the expense of another – that hold a long-term perspective focusing on both the present and the future. When you join our community of like-minded learners and expert instructors, you will be inspired to contribute to the health and resilience of your surroundings. You will learn about the important roles that effective communication, sustainable living, permaculture, and organic landscape management play in building healthy ecosystems, achieving biological diversity, and water/land conservation. We understand that people with busy lives want to have a hand in shaping their communities, so our courses and programs have flexible schedules. Whether you are looking to establish a professional career, to upgrade your skills, or to learn something new about the place you live and work, join our community and create a better quality of life.
