SHANE GIBSON | INSTRUCTOR Shane is an author and speaker specializing in social selling and sales performance. Having addressed more than 100,000 people across the globe, Shane brings years of experience to his role as instructor for the Professional Sales Certificate Program.
PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN SUMMER 2015
GENERAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SMALL BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Shane has observed that, all too often, organizations and salespeople do not have access to comprehensive sales training, or are too busy to attend in-person training, Shane and Langara College collaborated to develop the fully online program, teaching students how to create a complete sales action system that will enable an organization’s sales staff to achieve its full potential. The program’s students and graduates in many different industries report that completing the program entirely online has allowed them to apply the sales techniques and skills right away, which has substantially increased their sales. According to Shane, the biggest barrier to overcome in getting sales staff their training is a lack of available time. In today’s job market, taking online courses to remain competitive – without having to take time off work – confers a huge advantage on those who want to keep their skills up to date and get ahead in their profession. “Today’s competitive marketplace makes pulling staff out of the office for days of training difficult,” says Shane. “You need to be able to rapidly train your sales force with minimal interruption – online sales training fills that need.”

MIKE WISK AR COMPOSER SINGER MUSICIAN MUSIC PRODUCER
“I would not be working in film and television today had I not taken the Digital Music Production program.”
PHOTO BY ADAM BLASBERG | CS PHOTOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR
- Mike Wiskar
MIKE WISKAR’S SUCCESS STORY Mike Wiskar thrives on change. Which is good, because this graduate – and former Program Coordinator – of the Digital Music Production Certificate Program never knows what his next project might be. Producing music for television and film demands that he write quickly and in many different styles, from classical to metal, country to electronica. After six years producing live music in Tokyo theatre, Mike returned to Canada in 2004 and quickly realized he needed to catch up on recording software and music production techniques. “A friend of mine had taken a few Continuing Studies part-time courses at Langara and had raved about them, so I looked into the full-time music production program and realized it was exactly what I needed to get up to speed.” One of Mike’s priorities upon graduation was to find work in the competitive music industry. He immediately organized a home studio and began composing and placing as many music cues as possible. “The program covered absolutely everything I needed to learn about getting set-up as a working composer in Vancouver – the software, composing for film and television, music business, production – it saved me years of floundering about trying to learn everything on my own.” He still receives royalties from those first “seemingly insignificant pieces of music” he composed in 2008. “I went into the program with the goal of producing original pop music. However, when I graduated, I found I was a natural at scoring for film and television and enjoyed it immensely; it rekindled my passion for composing. I would not be working in film and television today had I not taken the Digital Music Production Program.”

BARBARA FELLNERMAYR | INSTRUCTOR Barbara, an instructor in the Professional Accounting Certificate Program, calls accounting “the language of business,” and mastering it was instrumental in her career path. Aside from teaching for more than 25 years, her career spans various sectors, but she credits her background in accounting for all those positions. Now a successful entrepreneur, accounting helps her understand all facets of her business, including financial reports, management, sales, and human resources.

Barbara’s accounting students come from diverse backgrounds and vary widely in age, but they all face similar challenges. “I tell all my students the same three things: nobody can take away what you put between your ears, it’s easier to work with your head than your back, and what you do now will affect the rest of your life.” She urges students to learn from her considerable experience, rather than make the same mistakes themselves. “I encourage people to ask questions in class, because if one person asks a question, everyone can learn from the answer. After a few weeks into the class, people aren’t afraid to ask questions anymore.” Watching her students’ growth through the program gives Barbara great sense of satisfaction. “It’s like watching a flower bloom. Students start out all tight and afraid. By the end of the course, people have confidence and have made lifelong friendships. And of course they have a better understanding about accounting, financial statements, and business in general. The best part is that I get to participate in the process.”

TAHERA RAWJI | INSTRUCTOR For the past 26 years, Chef Rawji has been teaching Indian cooking courses in Continuing Education. Born on the spice island of Zanzibar, Rawji grew up watching her mother blend unique recipes for family meals. After perfecting her culinary skills at the Institute Of Domestic Arts in Nairobi, Kenya, Rawji turned recipes she improvised on the back of a notebook into two national bestselling books: Simply Indian and Simply More Indian. Her series of courses takes a step-by-step approach to both Indian and Mediterranean cooking. “I love creating and perfecting recipes for my cookbooks without sacrificing the taste, and then making adjustments as I go along,” she says. “There are so many flavours to play with in butter chicken, Indian salads, biryani’s (exotic rice dishes), and naan bread, and the many dishes that accompany them.” Students in her class make Indian breads, appetizers, exotic rice dishes, desserts, Moroccan tagines, Lebanese baklavas, and more. They roast and prepare spices, learn tips for quick and easy cooking, and then take home delicious creations. One of Tahera’s favourite recipes is Zereshk Polos -- a rice dish with grilled chicken pieces marinated in delicate spices and saffron, served on a bed of rice with barbari seeds grown only in Iran -- a favourite Iranian dish from her mother’s side of the family. Chef Rawji’s students come from all walks of life, including professors, teachers, doctors, retirees, and foreign students. Most of her students don’t have any cooking experience, but enjoy Indian cooking at restaurants and want to make it at home themselves. “Usually by the second class they attend, they are already cooking at home during the weekend and bringing their food to share with the other students,” says Rawji. “In fact, they tell me that Indian cooking is not as complicated as they first thought.”

Educational Travel ROSS DURANT | INSTRUCTOR Who wouldn’t like a road trip through cowboy country? This photography-based tour is all about the stunning landscapes, geography, and solitude in the high desert country of southern Utah and northern Arizona. We will start in Las Vegas and follow the historic Route 66 to the Grand Canyon, Canyon De Chelly, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon/Horseshoe Bend, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, and back to Las Vegas – all in ten days. These sites are among the most visually stunning areas in the American Southwest, a region I’ve been exploring for years. They are all within a few hours drive of each other, and we will spend a day or two at each location – sort of like picking the best appetizers and desserts off the buffet table. If you want to elevate your travel photography skills to another level, this is the course for you. I have 35 years of travel and commercial photography experience to guide you every step of the way. You will also receive a 30-page travel photography manual and a resource file before you leave. This trip includes time for relaxing in the afternoons or additional exploration in each area. If you wish, you are always free to explore on your own or join the group on featured photo shoots. On past road trips to this area I’ve been amazed by the clear, clean light, night skies with thousands of stars, petroglyphs everywhere, and beautiful cloud formations. There is a fascinating native history to the area with plenty of ruins to explore, and unique features in each location. With some of the most bizarre landscapes in North America and beyond, you’ll think you are on another planet.

World Languages & ESL CAROL NAROD FRIEDMANN | INSTRUCTOR Carol has been teaching in Continuing Studies’ Langara English Proficiency Program (LEPP) for ten years, including classes in Intermediate English Writing Skills and LET Langara English Test (LET) Preparation. After teaching French Immersion in elementary and secondary schools in Vancouver and Edmonton, she later switched to adult education, teaching business and technical writing. Carol now enjoys teaching essay-writing skills to a wide variety of students, whether they are pursuing academic programs in college or already have professional careers and are upgrading their writing skills to excel in their fields. Her LET Preparation class attracts both advanced ESL students and local students who simply want to improve their writing test scores. A fourth-generation Vancouverite, Carol is an avid nonfiction writer who enjoys penning travel memoirs, and her personal essays have appeared in the Globe and Mail and the Vancouver Sun. She likes to make learning fun and aims to instill a joy of writing in her students. “Some have told me they want to become professional writers,” says Carol. “I can’t guarantee that, but I can tell them their writing will be better, after they finish the class, than what they started with. Writing can even be healing, as you take thoughts from your head and transfer them onto paper.”

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are a dynamic and student-centred learning environment where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.
Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.
Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Computer Technology KEN BUIS | INSTRUCTOR To stay relevant in the online marketplace, it is important we keep our skills current. We need to be aware of trends and learn to adapt quickly and efficiently. As web marketers, we’re only as valuable as our current skill level, so continual learning is a necessity. Taking a class with an expert in the field who works on the web every day offers a fast-track approach to staying on top of our profession. Students in the Web Marketing Certificate Program come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide variety of experience. Some are coders and developers; others are marketers and business people, many are entrepreneurs wanting to do better online. With such a breadth of experience, our students learn according to their needs and contribute to each other’s development. Some challenges incoming students face include understanding basic coding, learning how to keep skills current, and adapting to a continual state of change in the industry. By working with professionals in the field, students gain access to the instructor’s wide range of day-to-day experience not available in blogs and videos. Upon completing the Web Marketing Certificate Program, students have a greater understanding of Google analytics, and the overall need to integrate a multiplicity of skills in order to get results. They will learn to adapt quickly to changes in web design, usability, and social media marketing. When they apply what they have learned to their work, they often see huge improvements to their online presence. For example, a recent student in the Internet Marketing & SEO course saw his website move from page six on Google to page one within three hours of making changes he learned in class. He was amazed that the small company he was working with could compete with huge multinational corporations in overall ranking, without having to rely on paid listings.

ELLEN YANG | ALUMNA Ellen already loved her career as an art teacher when she discovered the Expressive Arts Therapy program at Langara College. Since then, Ellen has been teaching art to groups of adults and children, including those with autism, learning disabilities, and emotional and physical challenges. She taught her students not only to use their imagination, but to explore their inner thoughts, feelings, and ideas. “I was fascinated with how expressive arts therapy used different types of art – movement, sound, poetry, writing, and instruments – to heal people through imagination and creative expression.” Expressive arts therapy is about expressing in ways other than language, using creativity to relax and heal. During the creative process, people access different parts of their brains, finding creative solutions to otherwise difficult problems. With the guidance and support of an expressive arts therapist, they can discover inner strength, release blocked emotions, gain new insights into old problems, and break habitual patterns of thinking. After graduating from Langara’s two-year Expressive Arts Therapy Certificate Program, Ellen quickly launched her private practice. “As soon as I was certified as a therapist, I secured two private contracts. Since then, I have been self-employed, providing individual and group sessions in schools and the community.” Ellen is now working with PALS Autism and the Surrey School District and practicing privately as an Expressive Arts Therapist in Vancouver, recently launching her Autism Family Support Project. She is currently completing her Master’s Degree in Expressive Arts through the European Graduate School in Switzerland.

Sustainable Communities BRIAN CAMPBELL | INSTRUCTOR For Brian, the fascinating and complex world of beekeeping was a curiosity-turned-vocation after he spent countless hours observing bees with his children. Today, Brian is not only a Certified Beemaster and beekeeper, but he is also the founder of Blessed Bee Apiaries and the Bee School. As an instructor in the new Sustainable Urban Beekeeping program, he looks forward to sharing his knowledge and getting people excited about bees. The program focuses on best practices, so new and experienced beekeepers alike will find their perspectives on beekeeping enriched, despite the unique challenges they each face.

SUSTAINABLE URBAN BEEKEEPING ORGANIC LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT FAMILY CHILDCARE LEADERSHIP, FACILITATION & COMMUNICATION
“For beginners, the biggest obstacle comes from learning to trust the bees. Newcomers to beekeeping often are a little afraid of bees. By the end of the program, participants tend to relax and find their enjoyment goes up tremendously. For experienced beekeepers, the biggest challenge comes from developing confidence in trying new techniques and learning new skills.” The world of beekeeping is an intriguing journey, full of endless opportunities to learn and explore. It is also ultimately about connection, something that Brian is still humbled by every time he opens a hive. “Honeybees are the most studied insects in the world, but even still, there is lots to learn and discover about them. As a hobby, there is no end to exploring their world. They react to and interact with their keepers. They look at us and remember who we are, for better or worse. It’s possible to get to know them, their moods, and even their personalities.”
