JOHN NEULS | PROGRAM COORDINATOR, REAL ESTATE Training and development in British Columbia’s construction industry is changing. On the horizon are proposed projects in oil and gas, mining, hydroelectric generation, and transportation. Investments in residential home-building and renovation are expected to continue with steady immigration into BC. According to BuildForce Canada, industrial, commercial, and institutional construction projects will also grow in step with natural resource projects. Langara Continuing Studies offers two new certificate programs that will provide industry workers and management with focused training and education. Continued training opens the door to more careers in the construction industry and demonstrates professional growth. The Construction and Development Certificate offers a strong, practical foundation in construction management by preparing graduates to work in the construction and development fields, to establish their own construction businesses as entrepreneurs or small contractors, and to skilfully manage and control their own projects. The Supervisory Skills Training for Construction Certificate is a new, six-day program aimed at developing the leadership and management skills of supervisors on the front line of construction projects, providing them with a solid credential for career advancement. New workers in all sectors of the construction industry are looking for long-term, rewarding careers. Opportunities to develop technical skills and teamwork, to gain promotion and greater responsibility in management, to start new businesses, and to be recognized as construction professionals, are all going to be high priorities for workers entering construction positions. Building and maintaining professional growth in the construction field ensures project value for contractors, builders, and company owners.

PETER TSE | PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING I graduated from university with a bachelor’s degree in cell biology, but decided to pursue a career in accounting. As a mature student, it was quite different going back to school; I was in the classroom for a purpose. My goal was to accelerate my completion of the CGA program, and become designated.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN SPRING 2015

PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING ADVANCED ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONAL BOOKKEEPER

I liked how the accounting program at Langara was structured and flexible. The ability to transfer the courses towards my CGA requirements was also a definite plus. I took one course through the CGA distance education program, and it just wasn’t working for me. The timeslots for the courses at Langara worked out well while having a full-time, nine-to-five job. I liked the convenient location and in-class environment. In comparison to my other post-secondary experiences, I enjoyed the smaller class sizes, and found the instructors more personable. It was quite the difference from sitting in a large lecture hall watching the teacher speak for the duration of the class. Having a lecturer lead the discussion and the course topics was infinitely more beneficial compared to reading pages and pages of text on a computer monitor. My fellow classmates were also working full-time and looking to further their careers. Being surrounded by other students keen on advancing their careers made it even more welcoming, as well as being able to make new connections. It brought about an elevated level of interaction and networking that has contributed to where I am today. Studying at Langara helped further advance my career and I am on track to earn my CGA designation in 2015.

Educational Travel PETER PRONTZOS | INSTRUCTOR It is always such a delight to help people to get to know Greece and its history, beyond the usual tourist experience. On our tour next spring (May 23June 6, 2015), we’ll visit the more celebrated sites: the Akropolis, the oracle at Delphi, the ancient theatre at Epidauros, and the volcanic island of Santorini. We also explore places tourists rarely see, such as the charming town of Nauplio, a town square paved entirely in marble, with its beaches, museums, Venetian palace, and seawall.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE THIS SPRING

CUBA PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR SOUTH OKANAGAN PAINTING TOUR GALÁPAGOS ECO TOUR ART & ARCHITECTURE TOURS GREECE CULTURAL TOUR

We will relax for several days in Kyparissi, the beautiful village on the Aegean where my father grew up. Founded over 3,000 years ago with mountains at its back, it is home to about 400 people. It has wonderful restaurants, coffee shops, and a small general store. We will be staying at my cousin Sophia’s hotel, just a few metres from the beach. It’s a place to chill, swim, take walks or hikes, read on the beach, and enjoy a little bit of paradise. During my last tour in Kyparissi, I told the owner of the general store that a few of us were going to hike the trail to Bambala, a plateau in the mountains that overlooks the coast. He proceeded to shut down his store in order to drive us to where the trail begins. The tour ends in Santorini, one of the most spectacular places on earth. You can ride a donkey down the side of a volcano, and visit the town of Akrotiri. When the volcano erupted several thousand years ago, the town was covered entirely in ash. The explosion devastated the Minoan Empire, giving rise to the legend of Atlantis. Finally, we spend our last evening in a small taverna with live Greek music and great food, celebrating new friends and recounting our adventures.

World Languages & ESL DOMENICO SORACE | INSTRUCTOR Domenico Sorace has been teaching Italian for eight years at Langara, and for more than 20 years across the Lower Mainland. He was born and raised in Italy in the beautiful, southern region of Calabria, known as the ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean’. After graduating from the University of Messina with a degree in Mathematics, he taught middle and high school students in northern Italy before emigrating to Vancouver in 1979. In Vancouver, he worked for an Italian language school preparing teaching materials for the teaching staff and teaching Italian as a second language to children, teenagers, and adults. Domenico emphasizes starting at the beginning in his classes. “Most of the students in my classes don’t speak any Italian. If they have a little bit of French or Spanish, it can help with the grammar and verbs,” he said. “Some of our students have Italian backgrounds, but only speak a specific Italian dialect at home.” His classes introduce the basics; students want to know how to ask for directions, find a bathroom, order a nice meal at a restaurant, and learn more about local customs. He’s also eager to tell people more about his native country, giving them a background in Italian culture before they go. “Our culture is steeped in the arts, architecture, music, and food. It has been flourishing for centuries, influenced by bordering countries such as France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.” As to where to visit, Domenico says Italy has so much to offer. “My favourite place is the ‘Cinque Terre’, which means ‘Five Lands’. It includes five small coastal villages in the Liguria region, in northwest Italy.”

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are a dynamic and student-centred learning environment where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Ruth has authored two texts as part of developing this program: Healing as Yoga Sadhana and Human Becoming: A Guide to Soul-Centered Living. “We believe that the body, brain, and energy systems keep score of the stresses and traumas in our lives,” says Lamb. “Our role in the AIEH program at Langara is to integrate recent advances in brain science, body awareness, and self-regulating resilience-building practices along with sophisticated biofield healing techniques. Our aim: to help individuals sustain a vital and inspired life.” Ruth and her colleagues are conducting a second mixed-method AIEH research study with a physician-nurse team working in a stressful, acutecare, trauma-based workplace. ANAND RAY | PRODUCTION DESIGN After working in Interior Design for 14 years, I looked for a way to shift my career direction while keeping the skills I had. I had no background in movies or television, but it was a natural transition. When I discovered the Production Design for Film and Television Certificate, it was just exactly what I was looking for. I have always been interested in movie production design and art direction, and knew that the Art Department would be a good fit for me. After researching other programs, many that required a full year of courses over broader subject areas, I found the 12-week program at Langara. It focused on what I wanted to learn in a manageable time period.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN SPRING 2015

DIGITAL MEDIA PHOTOGRAPHY COMMERCIAL ILLUSTRATION PERFORMING ARTS DIGITAL FILM PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR FILM & TV SINGER-SONGWRITER DIGITAL MUSIC PRODUCTION

Our class was small, so there was a strong bond that came naturally to our group. Our various design backgrounds meant a good mix of experience and balance. It also allowed the instructors to give excellent individual attention to students and really mentor us. With extensive hands-on experience in the movie industry, our instructors focused on specific areas that we needed to improve, considering the challenging nature of industry requirements. The Production Design program gave me the necessary knowledge and insight into the work standards and culture to successfully navigate these challenges.

CREATIVE WRITING ADVERTISING COPYWRITING ADVERTISING & DESIGN VISUAL ARTS IDEATION & CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

Since graduating, I have frequently contacted my former instructors for guidance, mentorship, and advice. I’ve since returned to teach Drafting and Drawing Concepts in the Production Design program. It’s ideal for those who might have a background in or basic understanding of design looking to enter motion-picture art departments.

Sustainable Communities ROB MIKSZA | INSTRUCTOR Rob Miksza, an instructor in the new Organic Landscape Management Certificate Program, has always had his hands in the soil. His grandparents were avid gardeners who started a victory garden in the shadow of World War II. Their small urban lot managed to produce food in enough abundance to feed their family. It was they who instilled in him the sense of joy one gets from growing food, and encouraged him to continue a family tradition. Now Rob shares that joy and knowledge with others.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN SPRING 2015

ORGANIC LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT PERMACULTURE HORTICULTURAL THERAPY LEADERSHIP, FACILITATION & COMMUNICATION

Rob’s passion for gardening and design led to a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Guelph. He currently focusses on international park and resort design, but maintains a personal love for home gardening. For the past seven years, he’s been working with local organizations to develop community gardens all over the lower mainland, while hosting workshops educating gardeners about food production within the very specialized growing conditions of the west coast. Over the years, Rob has witnessed a lot of changes in the way people garden. “Soil science and microbiology have influenced our understanding of the process of growing food by showing us the intricate network of relationships between plants, fungi, and microbes,” he says. “With the tools these sciences provide, we are able to look at gardening more holistically and we are able to problem-solve more confidently.” Rob is excited to be working with Langara and will be teaching three new courses on home-scale agriculture. These courses will give urban gardeners a solid foundation in growing food and establishing a long-term plan for sustainable gardening.
