Getting Started Bookstore 604.323.5525 The Bookstore sells textbooks, courseware, stationery supplies, and many gift items. For hours of operation, a list of current texts for all courses, policies on returns, or textbook buy-back information, see the Bookstore website.
Computer Access 604.323.5999 Information and Educational Technology Services (IETS) manages computer resources at Langara College. The Information and Computing Services (ICS) website contains detailed information regarding the following services and policies: •n •n •n •n •n •n

All currently enrolled students are given computer accounts for use in the computer labs. Students are encouraged to seek help from Lab Aides, when available, or to report hardware, networking, and printing problems to the Service Desk at local 5999. A phone is located in every lab.

The British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfer provides a glossary of academic and transfer terminology at www.bccat.ca.
E-mail Langara College students receive e-mail accounts from the College. You can access your College e‑mail account through the myLangara portal.
myLangara The myLangara portal is a web‑based interface to information and services at the College. From myLangara, you will be able to register for courses and check your grades. You will also have access to your College e-mail, Blackboard courses, news and announcements, bulletin boards, personal calendar, group and course discussions, and other College resources.
New Student Orientation Orientation for new students is held each semester, shortly before classes begin. You are encouraged to attend this fun and educational event that is designed to prepare you for your post-secondary experience at Langara College. During orientation you will have the opportunity to meet other new students and learn how to be successful in your studies.

Laser printers are located throughout the campus and require the use of copy cards that can be purchased in the Library and from a dispensing machine in ‘A’ Building, across from the cafeteria. Photocopies are 10¢ per page with a copy card or 15¢ per page when using coins. Coins cannot be used in the computer printers; the printers require a copy card.
Student Photo-ID 604.323.5309 Photo-IDs are available from Instructional Media Services (IMS), located above the Bookstore. Check the IMS website for scheduled Photo‑ID sessions. Replacement cards are available for $10.
Waitlisting During registration you may put yourself on the waitlist for courses that are full or for course sections that may open if there is sufficient interest. If you ‘waitlist’ for a course and a seat becomes available, you will be given an offer to register in the course. For more information, please refer to the Registration Guide and Course Schedule, published each semester.

Environment
604.323.5948 The College Advancement Office develops the Alumni Program for students who have completed a minimum of 30 credits at Langara College. Alumni cards are available and provide access to a variety of services and benefits.
Athletics – the Falcons 604.323.5421 Langara College competes in the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA). Students carrying a minimum course load of 9 credits may try out for the following Falcons teams: badminton, basketball and soccer.
Athletics – Intramurals Intramurals and recreational opportunities are offered in a welcoming and relaxed environment and are a great way to meet new people. Activities include badminton, basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and other gym activities.

Langara College is an environmentally conscious campus with recycling, composting, and carpooling programs. The Student Environment Committee and the Langara Environment Committee are open to all students and employees. Recycling Langara College has an active recycling program. Recycling bins can be found in various locations throughout the campus. Proceeds from the recycling of bottles and tins go to student bursaries.
International Education 604.323.5023 The International Education (IE) Department (located in Room A107) serves both Langara College’s Canadian and international students by offering a variety of relevant, innovative, top-quality programs and support services. The IE office helps integrate international students into campus life and creates international opportunities for Langara students. SOS (Support our Students) Campaign 604.323.5674 Each year, the College family (students, employees and alumni) participates in the SOS fundraising campaign. Funds raised have been used to provide student scholarships and bursaries.
Studio 58 604.323.5652 During the fall and spring semesters, four full-length plays, designed and directed by professionals in the Vancouver theatre community, are presented by Theatre Arts students. All shows have free student preview performances. In addition, two free “Risky Nights” productions are presented. Reservations are recommended. See the Studio 58 website, www.studio58.ca, for information about current productions, ticket prices, and student discounts.

Academic Life Academic Offerings University Studies Seventy-five percent of Langara College’s 8,000 students are registered in first- and second-year Arts & Science (University Transfer) programs and courses. Career Studies More than 30 career programs are currently offered at Langara College. Many career programs are transferable to university and/ or offer practicums, internships or co‑op work placements.
Continuing Studies 604.323.5322 Continuing Studies (CS) offers more than 700 courses and 40 certificate programs in Business, Creative Arts, Computer Technology, Holistic Health, Heath & Human Services, and Language Skills. Many courses are designed to fit into busy schedules and enable individuals to successfully achieve their educational, professional, career and personal goals. Check the CS website or pick up a CS Catalogue from the CS info desk, located in the north lobby of ‘A’ building.
Distance Learning As an alternative to on-campus courses, Langara College offers Online and Guided Independent Studies (GIS) courses. For information on current courses and how to register, refer to the online Registration Guide and Course Schedule. Contact the Counselling Department for advice on course planning. Visit the Library website under “Using the Library” to learn more about distance library services. Blackboard, Langara’s online course software, is available through the myLangara portal.
Diagnostic/Placement Tests To meet the prerequisite requirements for some courses, you may be required to write a placement or diagnostic test. These tests are designed to assist in placing you in the appropriate course level and include: •n Chemistry Diagnostic Test •n Langara English Test (LET) •n Math/Stats Diagnostic Test •n Physics Diagnostic Test
Graduation You should apply for graduation at the Registrar’s Office during the semester in which you will complete your program requirements. To receive your credential at the annual graduation ceremony held each June, you must apply for graduation before March 15. Requests for exemption from a course or program requirement should be submitted to the Graduation Adjudication Committee through the Registrar’s Office well in advance of the deadline date for applications. (See also Policies). Students can compare the courses they have completed or are registered into with the graduation requirements of most of Langara College’s programs through the myLangara portal.
Prerequisites A prerequisite is a requirement that must be fulfilled before registration is permitted in some courses. Prerequisites may include placement tests and secondary or post-secondary courses. Prerequisite information is included with course descriptions in the Langara College Calendar and is included in each semester’s Registration Guide and Course Schedule. www.langara.bc.ca
Transfer Credit 604.323.5241 If you have studied at another recognized post-secondary institution, completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or passed an Advanced Placement Examination, you may be eligible for college credit. See the BC Transfer Guide website at www.bctransferguide.ca or contact the Registrar’s Office for further information. Transfer credit is not automatically assigned; you must apply for it through the Registrar’s Office. Students wanting to transfer to other post-secondary institutions should contact that institution for advice regarding transfer credit. For more Information about transferring to B.C. institutions, visit the British Columbia Transfer Guide (www.bccat.bc.ca).
Transcripts 604.323.5241 Unofficial transcripts may be printed off the College website or obtained from the Registrar’s Office. If you want a transcript to be sent to another institution, you will require an official transcript, which you can order online or request from the Registrar’s Office. Fees are posted on the website. Please allow five working days for processing.
Withdrawals If you wish to discontinue a course after the first week of classes, you must officially withdraw from the course using myLangara. For information on withdrawing from courses and withdrawal deadline dates, refer to the Registration Guide and Course Schedule, published each semester.

Student Services Academic Help Centres Biology Help Centre The Biology Help Centre is available to students enrolled in Biology. Visit the Biology website for details. Chemistry Help Centre The Chemistry Help Centre provides drop-in tutoring for students enrolled in Chemistry. Check the Chemistry website for details. CSIS Help Centre The CSIS Help Centre is available to students currently enrolled in Computing Science and/or Information Systems. Check the CSIS website for details. Math & Stats Activity Centre Located in Room L208 (2nd floor of the Library Building), this Centre provides drop-in tutoring for students. Help is available from both faculty and student peer tutors. Priority is given to students currently enrolled in Math or Stats courses at Langara College.

Physics Help Centre The Physics Help Centre provides drop-in tutoring for students enrolled in Physics. Help Centre schedules will be announced in Physics classes and posted outside the Physics Lab (A352). Writing Centre 604.323.5938 The Writing Centre is located in Room L207 (second floor of the Library Building).
The Writing Centre can help you: •n improve your writing •n understand what academic readers expect •n develop confidence and overcome any fear of writing •n learn to apply structures that will clarify meaning Resources include: •n one-on-one tutorials •n handouts prepared by faculty •n reference books •n computers •n self-study •n small-group workshops on various topics
Child Development Centre (Daycare) 604.323.5535 Langara offers an inclusive daycare, serving approximately 60 children aged 18 months to five years, with some spaces designated for children with special needs. Priority is given to students and employees of Langara College.
Co-operative Education 604.323.5480 Co-op programs enable students to integrate academic studies with related, practical work experience. Visit the Co-op website for details.
Counselling 604.323.5221 The Counselling Department, located in Room B111, is staffed by professional counsellors. Confidential services include personal, educational, career and crisis counselling to enrolled students.
Designated counsellors assist international students, students with disabilities, and Aboriginal students. A Career Resource Centre is also located in the Counselling Department. A collection of college and university calendars, career literature, and information on labour market trends is available. Student Success Workshops are offered each semester. Topics include study skills, stress management, and career planning.
Disability Services 604.323.5635 Disability Services is committed to providing students with identified disabilities with support services and guidance. Students requesting assistance must register with the Disability Services office according to published deadlines and provide the appropriate documentation. Financial Aid 604.323.5376 Financial Aid is available to reduce financial barriers to your educational success. Learn about student loans, bursaries, scholarships, and student employment on campus by visiting the Financial Aid website or dropping by Room B116.
Health Services 604.323.5256 Located in Room B101, Health Services is a medical clinic staffed by physicians, a nurse and a medical office assistant, and provides a full range of confidential care. This includes such things as cold-care packs, immunizations, Pap tests, screening for STDs and affordable birth control. A psychologist and a psychiatrist are available on a part-time basis. The clinic is open M-F, 8:30-4:00 pm, except between 1:00-2:00 pm.
Instructional Media Services (IMS) 604.323.5309 IMS, located in Room A265, assists students with the production of materials for class presentations and assignments. Equipment such as VCRs, data video projectors, audio cassette players and digital cameras can be signed out and used for in-class presentations. (See also Student Photo-ID).
Library 604.323.5462 The Library has books, journals, media, and online resources for your course assignments. Help with your research is available in person at the Reference Desk or by phone, e-mail or online chat. Drop-in library research classes are offered throughout each semester.
Use the Library’s study spaces, group study rooms, computer labs, wireless access, and adaptive technology lab (for students with disabilities). The Writing Centre, the Math & Stats Activity Centre, and additional computer labs are also located in the Library. Visit the Library website for more information.
Services for Aboriginal Students 604.323.5645 Services for Aboriginal students are available from the Manager of Aboriginal Services, located in B142. You can contact the Manager at 604.323.5645 or aboriginal@langara.bc.ca. Services provided include College orientation, advocacy with band/tribal administration and sponsoring agencies, and information on community resources and College programs and services. The Aboriginal Liaison Counsellor, located in the Counselling Department, Room B111, provides educational, personal, and career counselling. You can make an appointment with the Counsellor by calling 604.323.5221. The Dave Pearson Native Student Centre, the gathering space for Aboriginal students, is temporarily unavailable due to construction of the new Langara Students’ Union building. Once construction is complete, this space will include an organizing area as well as a resource centre with an extensive library of literature, videos, pamphlets, and calendars on a wide variety of topics pertaining to Aboriginal issues.

Student Employment 604.323.5376 Student Work Assistance Program (SWAP) Students demonstrating financial need may apply to the Financial Aid office for work opportunities at Langara College. Many departments on campus hire students. To qualify, students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and must be enrolled in a minimum of nine credits (or a minimum of six credits where the student is permanently disabled and is registered with Langara College Disability Services). Although the program is open to all qualified students, returning students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0. Contact Financial Aid for further details. Student Employment Website Visit the Students tab in myLangara for information and resources that help students find employment. Learn how to write effective résumés, network for employment, and interview for success. You can also access job search engines such as the Langara workopolisCampus website, which lists summer employment, part-time jobs for students, and full-time positions after graduation.

Food Services
For your convenience, an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is located opposite the Security Office in the main lobby of ‘A’ Building.
Bike Racks Racks for bicycles are provided throughout the campus. Most are on the north side of the ‘A’ Building. Secured, covered bike parking is available in the underground parkade - first level. Buy your magnetic access card at the Bookstore for $5.00 per semester. Contact Campus Security if you forget your bike lock.
Emergencies (Fire, Evacuation) LOCAL 4444 Please familiarize yourself with the evacuation routes posted in each classroom. “Panic buttons” are strategically located around the campus. A two-stage alarm is used: •n Warning bells (slow beat - 20 rings/minute) - during which you must prepare to evacuate •n Continuous ringing means you must leave the building immediately.
Lost and Found
A student cafeteria and a Tim Hortons are located in the ‘A’ Building and a Starbucks in the new Library/Classroom Building. Vending machines are located throughout the campus. Please be considerate of others and clean up after yourself.
Lockers Gym Gym lockers can be rented for a minimal fee on a semester-tosemester basis, and rental includes a towel service. Please see the Facility Assistant in the gym equipment room for details. LSU Lockers can be rented from the Langara Students’ Union on the first day of classes for a small fee plus deposit. The lockers are limited in number and rent quickly on a first-come, first-served basis. A full locker rents for $15 per semester and a half locker rents for $10 per semester. An additional deposit fee of $10 is charged and will be refunded at the end of the semester upon return of the lock.

Parking Imperial Parking meter outof-order automated number: 1.866.277.5501 The new Library/Classroom Building includes underground parking. User-pay parking is in effect on campus. The northeast parking lot (near ‘A’ Building) is reserved. Students with disabilities should contact Disability Services for special arrangements. Imperial Parking lots are open from 0530 to 2330 hours weekdays, 0530 to 1900 hours weekends. Vehicles without appropriate tickets and those remaining on-site after hours will be removed at the owner’s expense. Langara College is concerned about the safety and security of everyone on campus. The Security Office is centrally located, adjacent to the Cafeteria. Transportation Students are encouraged to use transit or to carpool, cycle, or walk to and from the campus. The College is situated in a residential neighbourhood, with a 5-block “Resident Only Parking” zone around the campus. Parking in this area will result in a City of Vancouver parking violation. Students’ Union
U-Pass Program
604.324.3881 Every Langara College student is a member of the Langara Students’ Union (LSU) and pays membership dues each semester. Each semester student elections are held for the LSU Executive Committee. A number of other committees are also open to students.
In November 2007, Langara College students voted in favour of adopting the Vancity U-Pass Program. The U-Pass provides students with unlimited access to TransLink Bus, Skytrain and Seabus services throughout the Metro Vancouver area and discounts on the West Coast Express.
A new LSU building is currently under construction. Please contact the LSU office, temporarily located in a trailer east of the parkade entrance, for information about the services that are provided during the construction period.
The U-Pass Program is mandatory for ALL students who pay Students’ Union fees. U-Pass fees must be paid to Langara College by the fee payment deadline or you may be de-registered from classes. Exemptions will be granted to students who meet exemption requirements and submit the necessary documentation by the exemption deadline.
Health & Dental Plan StudentCare 1.866.369.8796 In April 2005, the Langara student body voted in favour of adopting a mandatory student health & dental plan. As a result, all full-time students are now automatically covered by the LSU Health & Dental Plan (i.e., students enrolled in nine or more credits). All fees for the LSU Health & Dental Plan must be paid to Langara College by the fee payment deadline or you may be de-registered from classes. Academic Standing It is our sincere wish that you be successful at Langara College. To maintain good academic standing, you must receive a minimum GPA of 1.5 each semester. If you obtain a semester GPA of less than 1.5 or receive more than two failing grades, you will be advised to contact the Counselling Department to discuss your educational concerns. For complete details, see the Langara College Academic Standing Academic Probation and Academic Suspension Policy on the College website.
Attendance You are expected to attend all classes, lectures, laboratories, workshops, practica, and seminars. Irregular attendance may result in your exclusion from classes. If absence is due to illness, you may be asked to submit a medical certificate.
Change of Name or Address Addresses and/or telephone numbers may be changed online. A change of name requires official documentation and must be done at the Registrar’s Office.

Debts Unpaid debts to Langara College must be cleared before registration in a subsequent semester will be permitted and before you can obtain an official transcript or College credential. Debts that remain outstanding are forwarded to a collection agency.
Fees Fees are subject to change. Refer to the College website for current fee information. Don’t Get Dropped All fees must be paid in full before the published semester deadline date. Failure to pay fees in full will result in the student being dropped from all courses. Please refer to the online Registration Guide and Course Schedule for further details. Fee deferrals are available to students who: •n have approved BC/Canada Student Loans in advance of the tuition fee due date •n are experiencing financial hardship •n have approved sponsorship funding. Final Examinations To receive course credit, you must write your scheduled final exams. Governance Student representatives are elected to the Langara College Board and Education Council, and these elections run concurrently with the Langara Students’ Union (LSU) elections. For more information, contact the Registrar’s Office. Student representatives on Langara Council are appointed by the LSU.
