Scott Johnston took over as Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce president Tuesday night, taking the reins after Kristine Simpson’s two year

term. Johnston, a lawyer with Campbell Burton McMullan, was formerly the vice president and was elected by acclamation. Simpson’s term was marked by a major change, the move in the chamber’s offices from Langley City to a new location in Willoughby in a modern office complex. The chamber bought its new offices outright using reserves and will have neither a mortgage nor a dues

increase this year. Johnston thanked Simpson, and said that going forward the chamber will emphasize its shop local campaign, will work on improving communications with its members and advocacy for the business community. Johnston noted that with the population of Langley expected to double in the next two decades, there will be a number of new challenges for local business in the near future.

RCMP seek shooters

That moment when a life can be saved

Three men were shot in Langley. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

One man is in grave condition and two others were wounded after all three were shot at a South Langley house early June 11, and two more men were wounded near the Surrey Langley border on Saturday. Langley RCMP were called to a house in the 2500 block of 204th Street at 2:20 a.m. Thursday after multiple people called to report hearing gunshots. The three injured people were taken to hospital. One remains in grave condition, said Cpl. Holly Largy, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. One man was released soon after and another remained in hospital. The two less-seriously injured men have not been cooperative with the investigation, and all three are known to police, said Largy. The Langley RCMP Serious Crime Unit took control of the

Matthew Claxton/Langley Advance

Police blocked off a portion of 204th Street in South Langley Thursday morning while investigating a triple shooting at a local house. investigation and officers were interviewing neighbours on Thursday morning. The three men are known to be Surrey residents and none of them lived at the home, said Largy. The house’s neighbours said that while it was relatively quiet, this was not the first time it has drawn official attention. “There’s been police there before,” said one neighbour who asked not to be named. Another neighbour, Jim Zazula, said he only knew the men living or working there to say hello to. “Don’t like it at all,” he said of having the house on the street where he’s lived for more than 30 years. Asked if there was a marijuana grow op on the property, Largy said there was no illegal grow op.

Thieves have targeted legal, medical marijuana grow operations in the past, but Largy could not say whether there was a legal operation at the house. There was a serious incident that brought the Surrey RCMP to the property in 2013. On Aug. 2 of that year, men in two cars in the 5800 block of 126th Street in Surrey exchanged gunfire just before 3 p.m. Two men, aged 19 and 21, who turned up at local hospitals with gunshot wounds were linked to the shooting, which was suspected to be a targeted incident. Cpl. Dale Carr of the Surrey RCMP said a vehicle linked to the shooting was recovered at a property in the 2500 block of 204th Street.

Letters to the editor

Lochiel kids are diverse Dear Editor,

As a parent of students who have attended the Lochiel U-connect program for a dozen years, I would like to correct a huge misconception that was in the print version of “Lochiel Program moves to Simonds.” This newspaper has characterized the school as place where only students who have anxieties attend. While there are students like that who attend Lochiel, the majority of students are from families who choose to have their kids learn at home most of the week for any number of reasons. For instance, my kids started their formal education at Lochiel, never having been in another school.

It was a choice we made as a family because I enjoy spending time with my kids helping them learn. There have been families with kids in competitive athletics who like the relative flexibility of the program, and others whose kids are bright and enjoy the ability to work at the level their kids are at while still spending time with their age cohort. Others just like the ability to work quickly and be done school by noon so they can go off on field trips or study nature or any number of other activities. I challenge the reporter to get to know some of the students, past and present, from Lochiel before writing another such

article. She will find students who do well in science fairs, speech competitions and athletics. She will find people who have gone on to get top scholarships at universities, run their own businesses or be socially active in Canada or abroad. She will find students who excel in drama and/or sports. And yes even students with anxiety, some of whom, after a few years at Lochiel, you might be hard pressed to differentiate from their peers because they are no longer anxious. Lochiel is a place where any student can come and learn, all it takes is commitment on the part of a parent to help them through the learning process. Heather Matson, Murrayville

Dear Editor,

In response to Bruce Jones suggestion that we need to add freeway access at 208th Street [“Highway access needed…”, June 11] to ease congestion at 200th Street. While I understand that there is a need for more freeway access due to the atrocious design of the 200th Street interchange, I must argue with the idea of adding on-ramps and off-ramps to 208th Street. Those of us who need only to get across Highway 1, not access it, need to be able to do so without fighting and expanding the line-up to get onto the freeway. I suggest a whole new overpass with a proper cloverleaf system (not traffic lights!) at 216th would be a far better option and leave the fly-over at 208th.

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the letter on vaccination by Jennifer MacQueen. I, myself, have five children with autism. [“Bigger picture missing in debate over vaccination” June 11] The oldest two were medically confirmed injured by vaccines. I, too, have spent much time researching this subject. I believe that you too fail to see the big picture in this debate. The debate is not about the safety and efficacy of the

vaccine program. It is about who holds sovereignty over people’s body’s and what can be done to them. Is sovereignty over your body held by you or the state and, if the state then to what limit. Historically many societies would sacrifice their children to their gods for “the greater good”. Today society sacrifices their children to the god of Science for “the greater good”.

Jason Bradner, Abbotsford

Dear Editor, On Thursday, May 28, between 5 and 6 p.m., my bike has been taken by force from outside Muriel Arnason Library in Willowbrook. To the person who took it, please be kind to me and return it. It has been three weeks that you “borrowed” my bike and at the same time, you have taken my mobility and freedom. I am a senior who doesn’t drive nor owns a car. I ride my bike everywhere, which beats walking or taking transit. The bike you took is too small for you. It has a small frame suitable only for a little old lady like me. To the public, if your son, husband, friend, neighbour suddenly acquires a black Cannondale mountainbike, please compare it to the picture attached, it might well be my bike. Please return it to Langley Advance office, [located at #112 6375 202 St.] so I can be mobile and enjoy my freedom again. Lani Schultz, Langley City

The Ride for Doug saw father and son hit the road to fight muscular dystrophy.

Cam Penner pulled a helmet on for his son Doug, at the annual Ride for Doug fundraiser to fight muscular dystrophy.

MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Cam Penner’s son Doug tugged on a motorcycle helmet and roared out at the head of a long line of chromed two-wheelers on June 6. The annual Ride for Doug, a fundraiser for those with muscular dystrophy, was a roaring success to match the noise of the 77 motorcycles. “Together with the post-ride barbecue, Doug’s friends both new and old raised a stagger-

ing $37,000,” said Cam Penner, Doug’s dad. “This was our highest ever one year total, bringing the RFD nine-year tally to $167,000.” Doug Penner was two when he was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Gardening in Langley

Weeds are just plum difficult to eradicate

ANNE MARRISON

Dear Anne,

Is there a way to permanently remove weeds from sidewalk cracks, and in-between the street and the sidewalk. They are very hard to get at because the crack is so narrow.

Sandy Feng, Maple Ridge Dear Sandy,

You can get the best results by removing as much as you can manually then dosing the bits of roots that remain.

First, for the sidewalk weeds that are shallow-rooted, you could start by pulling those. For any that are tap-rooted, you could get an old, thin kitchen knife (if you don’t have one, you could find one in Value Village or perhaps a thrift store). If you can’t get the taproots out, try to shred them in place with the knife. But removing weeds from anywhere permanently is really an elusive dream. The best you can hope for is removing them for a long time. The dosing options include salt. This sterilizes soil so nothing will grow for a while. But it needs to be used with care. This area tends to be a rainy place and water is a determined traveller. As a result, if your

sidewalk/road cracks are on a slope, the salt will travel downhill and cause problems to plants wherever it ends up. Water can also leach any substance in the soil down to greater

depths and neutralize its presence in the top layer of soil. This means that soil which has been sterilized with salt gradually becomes more and more receptive to seeds blowing into that area. Boiling water is also a potential weed-killer. It’s cheap and easy but accidents with it could be horrific. So it shouldn’t be used where young children or animals are around – or older people with poor balance. Vinegar is another weed-killer. Ordinary white vinegar (acetic

acid) kills top growth but doesn’t touch taproots unless you’ve worked them over first and shredded them with something sharp. Then it can work very well. Horticultural vinegar is the key ingredient in organic weed-killers. You can find this in garden centres. It doesn’t touch deep taproots either, but is much more effective than household vinegar. Horticultural vinegar is strong and needs to be used with respect, but it works well and there’s usually a useful pause

before it leaches away and weeds get a chance to return. Flame weeders run on small bottles of propane. Weeders kill top growth and incinerate seeds though new seed can still blow in. But take care: ours burned holes in landscape fabric under a gravel patio. Dear Anne,

I planted a bare root Damson plum tree four years ago. It looks very healthy, but it has never bloomed. Is this normal?

Sharon Lowe, Vancouver Dear Sharon,

Yes. It’s quite normal. It would likely have been about two years old when it arrived in your garden. From there you would need to wait about four to six years while your little tree is forming vegetative growth. I have grown damson trees, and they do take ages to get going with blossom – and don’t be surprised if the first two years the blossoms are a bare handful. But once they start, you’ll get more every year until the tree is covered each spring.

Cat oasis on cusp of reality ROXANNE HOOPER rhooper@langleyadvance.com

A $5 donation that came 11,368 kilometres – from Auckland, New Zealand – to Aldergrove, is indicative of the widespread kindness that will make a one-of-akind cat shelter in Langley possible. Last year, Langley Animal Protection Society announced its hopes to build a $550,000 cat oasis – a separate building dedicated to intake, treatment, and care of cats in preparation for adoption to forever homes. It would provide an isolation space that will help LAPS care for sick cats, in particular, without exposing others up for adoption. At an annual Heroes wine and cheese event Friday at the Patti Dale Animal Shelter, 142 people learned that the dream of this feline facility – or at least the fundraising for such digs – has almost been achieved, explained LAPS executive director Sean Baker. “We’re still looking for a few thousand, but we’re really close,” he said. In large part, he credited Shelly Roche – who put LAPS on an international forum a few years ago

Roxanne Hooper/Langley Advance

Joan Brooks and Janet Ingram-Johnson, both volunteers with the LAPS cat programs, were among those thanked for their dedication at the Heroes wine and cheese June 12. when she introduced the Tiny Kittens project through Facebook. “Our most exciting project yet is on the cusp of becoming a reality,” Baker added. “With Shelly’s neversay-never attitude, this pipe dream is soon coming true,” he said, thanking her for helping persuading municipal council to contribute 40 per cent of the cost. Baker said the

remaining 60 per cent has almost been realized through the international outreach made by Roche and her team. “We are currently deep in the design phase of the oasis and hope to be building sometime in the fall,” he added, vowing the LAPS staff and volunteers won’t take a break until the facility is a reality – if then. > More: langleyadvance.com

Nico is a nature lover and is looking for a companion to share long walks while taking time to smell the roses. This boy can comfortably spend time with other dogs but would like to go home at night to a place where he can be an only child as he does not share well with others. Nico is about 6 years old, weighs 32 lbs and will require regular grooming and a patient owner. No kids or cats for Nico.

ella Ella, age 5, is a friendly little dog on the go. She enjoys the company of dogs and cats. She prefers her humans be school age and up. Ella will require regular grooming/ clipping and her new owner will need to have a good relationship with their vet in order to manage her skin issues. Ella’s house training needs some brushing up.

Cleopatra

Cleo was surrendered to us after her cat siblings were ganging up on her. She is 4 years old and is lovely with dogs. She enjoys other cats as long as they enjoy her! She has a bit of cattitude, so she would not be suitable for a home with small kids. She is a very special black beauty and is just waiting for that purrfect person to come along and sweep her off her paws.

Sheeran

Lucy

Sheeran is a handsome 3 year old with the face of an angel! this guy came to us intact and scruffy with very manly cheeks. Since taking him on, we have had him neutered, tattooed and he is now ready for adoption. Sheeran is a sweetheart with beautiful ginger fur that is going to require regular brushing, about once or twice a week. this guy is a bit reserved but once you get to know him, he will show you his true colours. he loves to roll around in the sunshine and rub on his catnip pillow. he could live with another cat or dog and could possibly live with children

Lucy came in pregnant with five kittens during our kitten round Up (www.lapsbc.ca/kittenroundup/) in March. one of our fantastic foster moms immediately whisked her away to her home, so the lovely mama could have her babies in peace and safety. Lucy did a great job raising her babies and is now looking for someone to cuddle and pamper her for the rest of her days. this beautiful girl is a bit on the shy side and would prefer a quiet home without a lot of hustle and bustle.

HISTORY

Big train milestone One of Langley’s oldest business sites marks a century with a special celebration this weekend. The Fort Langley train station was built in 1915 by the Canadian Northern Railway two blocks west of its current location on Mavis Avenue at Glover Road. In 1918 the Canadian Northern Railways became part of Canadian National Railways. For many decades the train station was the hub of activiy for an area, carrying people and freight into and out of the community. The building was open until the 1980s when the station was closed for commercial train use. The Langley Heritage Society stepped up to move and restore the building. In 1984, soon after the restoration, the building was named a heritage site. The gardens around the station are in memory of the station master and his wife who used to tend the gardens. The heritage society maintains the site which includes a train car. The station remain a hub of the community but this time the arts community. The building houses an art gallery and the Fort Langley Artists Group. The anniversary celebrations are noon to 4 p.m. on June 20 and June 21. There will be an exhibit of railway photos by the Langley Camera Club, put up in the baggage car that sits on the site.

If luck is on his side, dad may be able to use his golf driver to make himself into an enviable sports car driver. It might not work exactly like that, but first prize at this year’s Langley Lodge Golf Skills Challenge is described as a Whistler experience for two, part of which includes the winner and a passenger making the 220-kilometre round trip drive from West Vancouver to Whistler in four unique cars. They include a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Ferrari F430 Spider, an Audi R8, and a Nissan GT-R. The winner will have the most successful attempt at a 140 yard hole-in-one at the event at Langley Golf and Banquet Centre (21550 44th Ave.) on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s the first year the family-oriented event has been held on Father’s Day and organizers, including Lilianne Fuller, feel it’s the ideal fit. She said it’s a great way for dads to “have some fun, be with their family, and support a really good cause.” That cause is the Langley Lodge. Funds will go for programs and activities the

lodge creates to enhance the life of residents in the seniors’ care home. Second prize at the event is a custom made fly fishing rod worth more than $1,500. “It’s awesome,” Fuller said. “It’s totally hand made and comes with a case.” The rod will be the prize for the golfer who is the most successful at ringing the bell at 50 yards away. Although the top prizes are significant, this isn’t a heavy golf tournament, it’s about fun, family, and trying out golfing skills, noted this year’s event chair, Lisa Gutenberg. “It is a series of golftype activities where participants will test their skills with activities that focus on chipping and putting,” she noted. In addition to the first and second prize contests, there will be door prizes, a silent auction, a candy challenge from Sticky’s Candy, a marshmallow longest drive, chip the whiffle ball, and more. “We’ve got a good thing,” Fuller said of the event. “People seem to like it.” Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for children under 16 and $50 for a family pack. Tickets include admission and chances at each of the contests, but if dad really wants that sports car experience or the fly fishing rod, he can pay a little bit more for an extra shot. Tickets are be available at the Langley Lodge and the Langley Golf and Banquet Centre.

festival benefits theBurn Fund. Visitors can wander the site and enjoy samples. Saturday is devoted to chili, Texas style (no beans, just meat and sauce). Judges can’t even find pieces of vegetables or garlic in the entries. That can result in disqualification. Also on Saturday will be the Best Darn Burger Championships and the Chefs Challenge. Teams are given a mystery protein to turn into a tasty dish. In the past, that has included kangaroo loin, rack of muskox, bison sirloin and Arctic char. Public samples are limited on the two side competitions but there’s lots of chili. Sunday is all about barbecue with contests for pork shoulder, beef brisket, chicken and pork ribs. Winners qualify for higher level events such as the Jack Daniels Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, Tennessee, the American Royal in Kansas City and The World Food Championships in Orlando, Fla.

Xtreme tops district, books ticket to provincials Langley’s 03 squad defeated the Valley Venom in the district title game.

The Langley Xtreme 2003B softball team had a golden weekend at the District 8 championships at Noel Booth Park. Saturday saw two decisive wins over the Valley Venom 2003B, and then a victory over Langley Xtreme 2004B which was enough to earn the local girls a place in the final. With temperatures soaring, the Xtreme again faced the Valley Venom ‘03 in the district championship game Sunday afternoon.

In arguably one of their most exciting games of the year, the Xtreme trailed 4-0 after two innings before tying the score the fourth and then pulling ahead

coaching staff was proud of the way the girls buckled down and battled hard to the end. The Xtreme’s winning performance was of particular signifi-

“Duncan Campbell was one of the rec therapists there at the time and he pushed me towards trying it,” Hirschfield said. “The team contact sport is what kind of drew me in there. I was 16 so I didn’t have a whole lot going on in my life that I had to worry about so I could focus on getting better and move on from there. Sport in general has been a huge reason I was able to move on. It gave me goals... and I was really able to really move on with my life pretty quickly without looking back.” Just how physical is wheelchair rugby? It’s called “murderball” for a reason. “Full chair-on-chair contact is legal,” said Hirschfield, who says he gets knocked out of his chair “all the time.” He’s been with the Canadian Paralympic team since 2004. His next goal is the Para-Pan Games this summer and if the Canadians wins gold there, they will automatically qualify for the 2016 Paralympics taking place in Rio de Janeiro. – Files from the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association website.

Car Show Support Trades Program

The D.W. Poppy car show was a huge success this year. Exceptional weather coupled with community involvement saw a record number of cars cover the back field and allowed visitors to enjoy a spectacular show of both vintage and contemporary entries. Proceeds from the show enable the schools shop programs to purchase new tools to further support their innovative programs for students. A big Thank You goes out the following major sponsors whose donations enabled the show to be the success it was. Johnstone Meier Insurance, Preston Chev Olds, Gasoline Alley, Willowbrook Motors, Driven Audio, Wakefield Castrol, Exlite Extreme Automotive Lighting, Supersave Group and the Fox and Hounds Pub. Again, a big thank you to all our sponsors, volunteers, friends and families of Poppy students who contributed their time to make the D.W. Poppy Car Show a huge success.

Athletics

D.W. Poppy strives to offer its 750 students a comprehensive athletics program that emphasizes a high rate of student participation in the pursuit of excellence. In the 2014/15 school year, a total of 28 teams in 11 sports competed for the Redhawks, a total unmatched in the Langley school district. Highlights of the year include a 2nd place Fraser Valley finish for the Senior Coed swim team, a 4th place Fraser Valley finish for the Grade 8/9 Girls Soccer team, and a repeat trip to the Fraser Valley Championship game for the Senior Boys Rugby team, who finished 2nd before going on to place 9th at the AA Provincial Championships. We look forward to seeing all of our students in “Poppy Red” in 2015/16. Go Redhawks!

Music

Musical Theatre

This has been an exciting year for the Poppy Players! We showcased two one act plays at our annual Young Artists Festival in November. Funhouse and Superheroes were directed by a team of dedicated senior Directing & Scriptwriting students, and showcased the talents of our junior actors. In March, we brought gamblers and their dancing dolls to the Poppy stage in our musical production, Guys and Dolls. We finished the season with four fantastic one-act plays featuring the junior and senior acting classes. This September we are looking forward to launching the DW Poppy Musical Theatre Academy and starting rehearsals for our spring musical, Footloose!

A grounding in music fundamentals supported by a variety of opportunities in concert band, jazz band, concert choir, jazz choir and pit band for musical theatre allows D.W. Poppy’s music students to create spectacular concerts while developing as both performers and artists. Our two music educators also connect with the surrounding elementary students teaching beginning band and the ever-popular Elementary Honour Band. This year the music department's events included tours to the Con Brio Whistler Music Festival, the Junior Residency at UBC and the hugely successful fundraising concert, Espressivo.

I go to Poppy because... “There are lot’s of opportunity in Drama and Music.” (Lela R.)

There is lot’s of diversity, opportunity, community, friends and good memories. (Grace T.)

“It is an accepting environment and I feel comfortable being myself; there is no judgement.” (Siobhan D.)

On Mon. June 8th Mr. Grant and his grade 8-12 Visual Art Students put on their ” Yearend Art Show” displaying 3,010 Drawings, Paintings, and Sculptures.

Advanced Placement

At D.W. Poppy, we offer Advanced Placement university prep programs including Psychology, Calculus, English Literature and Composition, European History, Physics and English Language and Composition. Students choosing to write the Advanced Placement Exam offered near the end of an AP course can potentially achieve credits for a first year university course. Also, writing this exam qualifies students to gain four extra credits toward graduation, thus making an AP course worth eight credits instead of just four credits.

Aboriginal Program

The 2014/2015 school year has flown by quickly for the D. W. Poppy Aboriginal Program. Once again we had over 100 Students who participated in our Program this year. We had a variety of cultural presentations including the medicine wheel, dream catchers, bannock, and soapstone carving. We also received another drum making initiative at the school this year to replenish our drum supply for the Red Hawk Drummers. Over the school year we drummed and sang at three Family Gatherings and the Kwantlen First Nation First Salmon Ceremony.

Europe Trip

New cultures and eclectic experiences awaited Poppy students who explored Europe for 16 days this past Spring Break. Whether it was shopping in the Florence leather market, walking the Champs-Élysées in Paris, sampling gelato in the Cinque Terre, or visiting the salt mines of Salzburg, a great time was had by all.

Computer Technology

It’s an exciting time in the Computer and Business Departments! The classroom area has been completely redeveloped into a “state-of-the-art” facility to support students with the importance of technology in the 21st century. Additions include a 3D printer to help bring student ideas in graphic and technical design to life.

Fine Arts

International Students

The 2014-2015 school year has seen the largest number of international students that the ISP program has had in many years. The program has students from Asia, South America, and Europe. Academically the students have had a very successful year with many of the graduates moving on to universities and colleges throughout Canada. New to the program this year was the ISP mentorship group which saw the new international students supported by a team of mentors. The mentors were both senior domestic students and senior international students. Many of the international students also participated in the travel opportunities the District provides so that they can experience more of what British Columbia has to offer.

Student Leadership

Many leadership opportunities are available to students at D.W. Poppy! Student government meets once a week at lunch to plan school events, fundraisers and activities. They can be found doing anything from running dances and collecting donations to directing pep rallies and planning spirit weeks! At D.W. Poppy there’s also Global Voices! They do numerous fundraisers, and focus on global matters in the world today. Whether it is local, or on a larger scale is Global Voices is always hard at work! Last but not least there’s the ACT 1(Acceptance, Caring , Togetherness 1) group which focuses on creating a caring and accepting environment for students. The best part about the many leadership opportunities at D.W. Poppy is that every grade is welcome to participate in any of these groups! Whether it’s small or large, every contribution makes a difference!
