hese large-scale residences feature grand room dimensions, generous amenities and services, and all are detailed with decidedly sophisticated finishes. Many residences have outdoor space. The Brodsky Organization has given celebrated designer William Sofield complete freedom to achieve levels of quality unseen in new construction in generations. Carved stone, custom-pigmented hand-laid brick, handcast ironwork, and oversized, fully customized window systems create a faรงade that will rank among the finest in New York. Inside are layers of rich details usually associated with custom build-outs: solid herringbone patterned wood floors, bespoke millwork kitchens and closets, hand-cast hardware, slab stone, custom lighting, and solid wood moldings, door and crown trim details. This is a building worthy of its address, of its city, of those who will call it home.

Building exterior Reviving a standard set in the heyday of New York apartment construction, 135 East 79 features a façade of hand-laid Indiana limestone and brick.

Entrance Flanking the arched glass entrance are matching medieval-inspired espaliered “pear tree” sculptures conceived and hand-modeled by William Sofield. Window grilles at the street level are antiques made by the firm that fabricated the gates for Buckingham Palace, one bearing a peacock, the other an owl.

he scale is human, and details such as the antique case clock, sconces, and tapestries are not overwhelmed by the space. The double-height barrel-vaulted lobby is home to a pair of vintage gilded bronze chandeliers fabricated in Paris and custom-wired for use here. A matching concierge desk and console in mahogany with Breche Violette stone tops modeled to match an antique set from Shirburn Castle in Oxfordshire were custom fabricated in England. There is a romance in the detailing. The serpentine-backed 18th century sofa, for example, is upholstered in the same green mohair found at La Scala in Milan. the experience of artisanal luxury continues in the elevator interior design. The cab interior was created in a proprietary liquid metal finish, and features a floral motif layered up by hand through subtle gradations of metal tones.

the designer

W

illiam sofield is considered one of the most thoughtful talents of his generation. A rigorous Modernist, Sofield believes in the credo that design must live as well as it looks. His work is defined not by a particular style, but by a holistic approach to design that addresses the requirements of living and where luxury emanates from fidelity to craft. Materials and architectural details take their cue from the context of the project at hand with careful consideration for function and a client’s individual personality and needs. His furniture and product designs are imbued with a sophisticated respect for materiality and a concern for how a design should improve with use and age to become an object of legacy. Mr. Sofield has been described by Interior Design magazine as a ‘choreographer’ of spaces. In 1983, Mr. Sofield received his degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from Princeton University, following an academic focus on Art History and European Cultural Studies. He is the recipient of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Interior Design for 2010 and is a regular fixture on Architectural Digest’s ad100. He founded Studio Sofield with the express goal of integrating multiple design disciplines.
