Zhu Jianzhong 朱 建忠 Zhu Jianzhong was born in in Nantong, Jiangsu Province of China, in 1954. He graduated from Nanjing University of the Arts in fine art in 1982. Now, Zhu is a member of Chinese Artists Association and an Accredited Artist of Jiangsu Institute of Traditional Chinese Painting. He works as the Deputy Director of Nantong Research Institute of Calligraphy and Traditional Chinese Painting. Zhu Jianzhong only paints one object: fir and pine trees, not tall and vigorous ones but young and lonely ones. He only communicates with the lonely tree, and observes the rules of its growth, the trends of its branches and its spatial posture. Between clouds and mountains, he gives the solitary trees a solid presence: instead of monumental big volume, it presents a light and graceful posture - an ideal portraiture of traditional literati figures. Paying tribute to ancient Chinese artists from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Zhu 's innovative and unique artistic narratives are composed by combining striking colour, western minimalism and classical Zen symbols. Recent exhibitions: 2015 ‘Arboretum’, Crane Kalman Gallery, London 2014 ‘Between Ink and Water—Contemporary Ink Paintings from China’, Royal College of Art, London 2014 ‘Shadow-Traces in Mountains’, Tokyo Gallery+BTAP, Beijing 2014 ‘The Distant Mountains – Shen Qin & Zhu Jianzhong Ink Art Exhibition’, Shanghai Alioth Culture, Shanghai
