By Pamela A. Keene An expanded menu at Sunset Cove and the possibility of a new 4-lane slide that dumps riders into Lake Lanier are on the boards when Lanier Islands opens for the 2015 season. The resort is also adding a new zipline canopy tour at LanierWorld. The park opened for weekends March 27 and will be open full time starting on May 9. “The Sunset Cove kitchen has been updated and expanded,” said Einar Gudmundsson, director of food and beverage at the resort.

“We’re offering more appetizers and sandwiches, plus we have a full menu or entrees, including grilled rib-eye steaks, crab cake dinners, a half a rotisserie chicken and barbeque St. Louis pork ribs. Sunset Cove will become more of a restaurant instead of a café.” Sunset Cove will again offer weeknight showcase events, including Masterpiece Mondays, Trivia Wednesdays and LowCountry Boil Fridays. The May Full Moon Party takes place on May 2, with Full Moon celebrations to follow each month all

Lanier Islands hosts in-the-water boat show By Pamela A. Keene Check out the latest and greatest boats at the Lanier Islands 4th Annual In-the-water Boat Show on the weekend of April 24-26. Marine dealers from around Lake Lanier will come together on the docks at Sunset Cove to showcase nearly 100 houseboats, cruisers, wakeboard boats, and pontoons. Qualified buyers will be able to take demo rides throughout the weekend. The show will include live entertainment, children’s activities and a bounce house, and

vendors with boat accessories and other marine-related items. Several of the island’s food outlets will be open, including Sunset Cove, Fire & Ice and the Dog & Draft. “This will be a great time to come out to see the wide variety of boats available to enjoy on the lake this summer,” said Chris Hendley, director of special events and promotions at the resort. Admission to the show is free with the regular $10 per car parking fee.

summer. “We’re hoping to open our first new ride in two decades with a new 4-lane slide that will propel riders right into Lake Lanier,” said Stephanie Orr, director of marketing at Lanier Islands. “It is currently pending approval by the Corps of Engineers, but our plans are for guests to ride tubes from near the mini-golf course on the hill over the boardwalk and end

up in the lake.” The park’s newest addition to its zipline adventures is being built with three side-by-side racing lines that will take riders across the cove and end up near Wiggle Waves. The resort has also doubled the size of the midcove Aquatic Adventure. MORE INFO/PRICING: www.lanierislands.com

Now is the time to get your free safety check When was the last time you got anything worthwhile that was truly free? What about getting something free that could save your life or keep you out of trouble with law enforcement? The Vessel Safety Check program helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal, state and local recreational boating safety laws, particularly regarding the carriage of safety equipment, and has been around since 1947. It was introduced as a “free” service and it still is. It also heightens the boaters’ awareness of safety issues through one-on-one contact by Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel examiners. This time of the year, recreational boaters are thinking boating again. Many of these vessels have been in “mothballs” for months, or more professionally referred to as having been “winterized.” Now is the perfect time to consider contacting a Coast Guard Auxiliarist who is a qualified “Vessel Examiner” and setting up a time for the safety check. Crappie Report Crappie fishing is good to excellent this time of the year. Water temperature is very critical. If you can find water temperatures above the mid 50s, it will work to your advantage. The trolling bite is good using double rigged curly tails in a variety of colors. Try tipping some with minnows. This technique will result in bagging bigger fish. For dock shooters, the bite has been consistent all day long, targeting shallower docks, 15 foot depths or less. As you

start at a dock, you will notice you are catching the bigger fish. As they tend to get smaller, move on to another dock. As we mentioned in the past, you are competing with a large number of fishermen this time of year, so it is very important to keep moving if you are not getting bites. The secret to putting a lot of fish in the boat is to simply cover a lot of water. Keep moving! We’ve been asked the last several weeks, “What happened to the fish on submerged brush piles?” They have abandoned their brush and moved into shallow water, preparing for the spawn. Four pound high visibility line is very important. Your jig color should vary depending on the water color. The more stain, the darker the jig. Stay away from heavier jig heads. 1/24 ounce remains our number one choice. As we mentioned in the past, keep asking your friendly bait store to carry that type jig head. They tend to be difficult to find. We’ve been painfully avoiding the words “blow down.” Normally at this

time of year, we target blow downs, but the water temperatures are not yet supporting that. Water temperatures need to be around 60 degrees for a few days in a row, which we’ve not consistently reached. Watch for it though, it’s coming, and that will be the first sign of the spawn. Best blowdowns are the ones that have been submerged a year or longer, in the backs of pockets. They’ve had a chance to build algae, which attracts the plankton, which attracts the bait … you get the picture! Governors willing to meet to discuss water wars By Jane Harrison Governors of Georgia and Florida indicated they are willing to sit down and talk about their states’ on-going water wars. Florida Gov. Rick Scott last month responded affirmatively to Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal’s offer to travel to the Florida capital to discuss water issues. Word of their potential meeting “is one of the first major positive things I have heard in a long time,” said Special Master Ralph I. Lancaster, appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee proceedings in the Florida V. Georgia lawsuit filed in Oct. 2013. “And I would encourage them to talk,” he said. Transcripts from the March 13 teleconference between Lancaster and attorneys from both states reveal the Georgia governor sent his offer in midFebruary, but Scott did not respond until mid-March. Florida attorney Allen Winsor told Lancaster that Scott did not receive the letter until the week of the teleconference. Lancaster reiterated his urging for settlement outside of court.

“As I have said before, this thing is going to cost millions, if not billions of dollars before we’re finished … I will continue to say until you’re sick and tired of hearing it that I think that the best possible result is a settlement between the states.” Lancaster furthermore suggested the governors study the Supreme Court’s decision in a Kansas V. Nebraska lawsuit that presents “a good roadshow for them to understand.” He added that although the issues were different, the case history and possible outcome are similar for the warring southern states. The litigation initiated by Kansas resulted in substantial costs for special master fees, a $5.5 million fine for Nebraska’s overuse of water prescribed in a 2006 compact, and a court imposed accounting procedure to determine water use. The court denied the states’ other claims for relief. Lancaster has warned that neither Georgia nor Florida would be happy if the court ends up settling the dispute.

Deal’s letter to Scott references their last meeting in 2011. It says that since then “there have been several key updates and I believe it would be beneficial for both parties to sit down and discuss.” The Florida lawsuit accuses

Georgia of draining excessive water from the ApalachicolaChattahoochee-Flint river system and causing environmental and economic harm to Florida’s Apalachicola region. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on that river system op-

erated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Florida contends that it needs fresh water flow downstream of Lanier to nourish oyster fisheries and endangered species and suffers from Georgia hoarding water to supply metro Atlanta.

Fish fry, weatherman Ken Cook, expo highlight April 18 LLA annual meeting By Pamela A. Keene It’s a bit earlier than usual this year, so be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, April 18. That’s when the Lake Lanier Association will host its Annual Meeting for all members. The event will be held at Port Royale Marina off Georgia 369, so you can come by boat or car. Long-time member of the Lake Lanier Association and lake resident Ken Cook, who recently retired from Fox5 Atlanta as the station’s chief meteorologist, will be the keynote speaker at the meeting.

The association has planned a social hour with food, a cash bar and a marine vendor expo from 4 to 5 p.m. The association’s business meeting will begin at 6 p.m., followed by Cook’s presentation. “We’re creating a festive atmosphere this year at Port Royale to give members a chance to socialize and have a little fun together,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the LLA. “The Lanier Crappie Club has generously agreed to provide a fish fry, serving heavy hors d’oeurves, during our Lake Vendor Expo from 4 to 5 p.m.”

Lake-related door prizes will be given out during the meeting. Cloud said that anyone who arrives at the event by 4:30 p.m. will be given a ticket for a chance to win a door prize. “We’re encouraging people to come by car or boat and they can dock their boats at the marina’s courtesy docks behind the gas dock,” Cloud said. “Then follow the signs to the large tent behind the dry-tack area.” MORE INFO: www.lakelanier.org

Where’s the beef? Try Moonie’s and Waterloo Burgers By Pamela A. Keene For some serious beef – and pork and chicken – set your sights on Flowery Branch along Atlanta Highway. After a career as a computer programmer, pitman Jason Martin put his taste buds to work and recreated true Texas barbeque at Moonie’s Texas Barbeque a stone’s throw south of Phil Niekro Boulevard four years ago. The gas-station-turned-restaurant is packed with locals every day who chow down on freshsmoked brisket, pulled pork barbeque, chicken and smoked turkey cooked right on the premises. “We brought beef brisket to Georgia,” Martin said. “Barbeque is not just pulled or shredded pork and many people here had never tasted brisket. Now it’s one of our most popular sellers.” Martin honed his barbeque skills when he and his family lived in Austin, Texas. Martin got hooked on the barbeque there and sought out experts to teach him all the tricks of the trade. “I cooked it for Brooke’s family a couple of times when we visited here and everyone loved it,” he said. “Then we moved to Georgia so our kids could grow up with their cousins, and that’s when I decided to start a restaurant. It had been my dream for a while, so it was time.”

The concept for Waterloo Burgers, which opened earlier this year just a mile north of Moonie’s, came honestly. Martin said that when Moonie’s first opened, it made and sold handcrafted beef sausage. “We would take the ground beef leftovers and turn them into burgers and they were really good,” he said. “Even though we don’t make sausage at Moonie’s anymore, the burger idea stuck. We wanted to stay in Flowery Branch to support the community, so we opened Waterloo Burgers.” Located in the former Crossroads Meats Company building, Waterloo Burgers is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The menu is simple: build-your-own breakfast burritos with eggs and a selection of toppings and house-made freshcooked cinnamon donuts are the stars. Lunch and dinner choices center around hand-pattied quarter-pound burgers – real meat lovers order a double – with a wide choice of fresh toppings, including three cheeses. Hand-cut fries and hand-dipped floats and shakes made with Blue Bunny ice cream keep the fresh, quality theme going. Waterloo Burgers also serves “free-trade” colas and soft drinks. “Made from evaporated cane

sugar, they have no caffeine and no high-fructose corn syrup,” Martin said. “You can really taste the difference.” Developed by a company in Maine, beverage choices include cola, diet cola, sarsaparilla and root beer. “The sarsaparilla makes a really really good float.” Moonie’s is open Tuesdays through Sundays; Waterloo Burgers is open seven days a week. We will also discuss with you other issues such as reporting of accidents, charts and aids to navigation, survival tips, fueling/fuel management, float plans, weather and sea conditions,

value of marine radios (handheld and installed), and safe boating courses available in the area. As you can see, there’s really more to this business of recreational boating than meets the eye. You can buy and run a boat without training, but it is not a wise thing to do. When the

weather is perfect and few boats are on the water, most anyone could operate a boat, but when things are not perfect, and they rarely are, your knowledge and experience can save your life and the lives of your “precious cargo.” Roy Crittenden is the Public Affairs Officer for Flotilla 29.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE SPLOST to help fund LLOV enhancements By Jane Harrison Hall County voters’ support of new one cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax last month eased some anxiety for a local organization hoping to impress the world in 2016. SPLOST approval will pump $500,000 from Gainesville and Hall County into the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue, site of the 2016 Pan American Championships. With the championships a little more than a year away, the money available in fiscal year 2016, beginning in July, eases some tension for a Gainesville Hall ’96 board preparing to spiff up the aging venue for a canoe/kayak 2016 Olympic qualifier. Board Chairperson Mimi Collins said she would seek design renderings from Gainesville architect Robin Millard, whose firm has already prepared sketches showing a major makeover of the boathouse and tower sides of the 1996 canoe/kayak and rowing Olympic site. A bridge to the tower’s second floor, enlarged concession area, additional restrooms, reception area and pavilion are among enhancements estimated to cost around $600,000. The venue also needs new docks to replace original platforms from the 1996 Olympics, which are sagging and splintered. The board spent $108,000 on two new docks last September. Five original docks are still in use. In addition to SPLOST funds, the venue may also get $300,000 in city and county money pending council and commission 2016 budget votes. Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan assured board members at the GH ’96 March meeting that the venue has the city’s backing. Hall County District 3 Commissioner Scott Gibbs, who also serves on the GH ’96 board, said the county will also vote on the

funding request. Both governments supplied $150,000 each for LLOV the past two fiscal years. Collins reported she has not heard back from the Governor’s office or state legislators about potential state funding. The board is moving ahead with other Pan Am Games plans, including opening ceremonies at Brenau University with a theater group performance and possible welcome from Gov. Nathan Deal. The fundraising committee is assembling a promotional package targeting donors to raise $40,000 to put on the games. In other GH ’96 news: • LLOV was selected to host the 2018 Dragon Boat World Championship. • A webcam mounted on the tower showing a view of the Olympic channel in front of the grandstands on the LLOV website is attracting attention. Venue Morgan Morgan House reported website hits increased from 99 to 145 in three days. • Residents living within a half mile of the venue will be notified by phone about major events coming up. • A large MasterCraft professional wakeboard event discussed for venue will not be held there. House said a local MasterCraft dealer may host a smaller event early this summer. • Upcoming events include: Visit by Georgia Department of Economic Development April 20, May 30 Lake Show concert with Shawn Mullins, Riverstreet, and Mid Life Crisis, Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours, and two July weddings. • The board approved Collins' nomination of Gainesville newspaper publisher Charlotte Atkins to fill one of two board vacancies.

Mercury outboards increase horsepower As the headline notes, there’s more horsepower coming from Mercury outboards. The new models – Verados – are 2.6 liter in line, six cylinder, with 156 cubic inch displacement, producing 350 and 400 horsepower. The supercharged engines received a pressure boost of 6 percent, a new liquid cooled supercharger, new camshaft profile, new valves, new reshaped cylinder heads, ventilated fly wheel cover, and new snorkel. The engines have been tested on the open ocean for a full boating season by experienced test drivers and also were run for 300 hours at 6,400 rpm in the lab in a test tank in Fon du lac, WI. The engine weighs in at 668 pounds which is almost 100 pounds less than the Yamaha 350 H.P. V-8. The engines are offered in 20, 25, and 30 inch shaft lengths. The Verado 350 has a list price of $27,500 in a 20” shaft length. The 400R comes under the Mercury Racing Banner and has a Sport Master lower unit with a cambered skeg which compensates for side torque. The crescent shaped sport master case is designed for speeds over 85 mph and has dual water pick-ups. Prices start at $31,500 and it has a two year warranty. In the outboard horsepower race this puts Mercury in the number two position with the new 400R. Seven Marine has the top horsepower with a 557 hp converted Cadillac V-8. Yamaha comes in third with their 350 hp V-8. Stay tuned, I’m sure we will see some more new large horsepower outboards introduced to power all the new off shore fishing and cruising center consoles. Oldest navigational aid We usually think of lighthouses being in the northeastern part of the U.S. Their photos are on hundreds of post cards, from Maine to Connecticut. Lighthouses, however, are helping boat captains all over the world. Their origin goes back to Egyptian and Roman times as coins were stamped with lighthouse images. The most famous of these was the Pharos lighthouse which marks the port of Alexandria in approximately 280 B.C. The pharos lighthouse is believed to have been more than 350 feet high. Taller than any other lighthouse in history it was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Pharos lighthouse consisted of

three levels, which may have included a large colonnaded base, an octagonal middle section and a conical upper section that was topped by a statue of either Alexander the Great or Ptolemy I Soter, the General who succeeded Alexander. The statue depicted the ruler in the form of the Greek Sun God Helios. The most recent account of this lighthouse functioning is from the 12th century. These houses were lit by fires called a brazier. The Romans built stone lighthouses, some of which survive today. The Dover Castle Lighthouse in Kent, England is typical of Roman lighthouse construction. The era of the most lighthouse building was in the 18th century which coincided with an increase in Trans-Atlantic commerce. The original light was provided by wood and coal fires. This fire source was replaced by oil (kerosene). Sperm whale oil was used in the Great Lakes lighthouses because it wouldn’t freeze. Near the end of the 19th century, electricity began to replace oil systems as the source of light. It was more efficient and cleaner. This also led to the automation of lighthouses. French physicist Augustine Fresnel developed a system based on light refraction, which bent the light source into a narrow beam, which was made even more intense by a center lens shaped like a magnifying glass. For many centuries, fog signals were handrung bells, or in some cases cannons which were fired regularly during periods of fog. Steam whistles were also used. Lighthouse keepers are a thing of the past, and have been eliminated by automation which is much more accurate and sophisticated navigation equipment on ships and boats meant that a lighthouse was no longer required. Even though lighthouses remain more than a historical symbol due to modern navigation systems on boats, local boaters and fishermen still find them useful. They in-

deed occupy a place in maritime history. New drive from Volvo-Penta With the increase in the wake surfing sport a new “forward drive” has been introduced by Volvo-Penta. With the forward drive, the propellers move from an exposed position beyond the transom to underneath the hull, safely away from the surfer. The exhaust also exits under the water keeping it away from the rider’s face. The forward drive was developed with the input of boat builders like Bryant Boats, which invited Volvo-Penta to demo the prototype on its 233X model at the Volvo-Penta facility. Regal, Cobalt, Four Winns, Monterey, and Chaparral have also participated in forward drive testing and may offer it on new or modified boat models this year. Volvo-Penta intends to offer the forward drive with gasoline engines from 200 to 430 hp but expects the prime application will be from 300 to 430 hp. Specific props have been designed for the drive, to be designated the K series prop sets. Volvo-Penta say forward drive will cost about 10 percent more than a traditional stern drive. Get ready for the season Here are several items that you may have overlooked when you winterized. It’s getting close to boating time so check these out: If your boat is trailered make sure you check the tires, wheel bearings, light system, and winch. There’s nothing worse than having a flat tire on the way to the lake with a carload of kids. Next check your battery system. Make sure all connections and wires are clean, properly connected. If your batteries are getting close to being replaced, you might want to go ahead and move up to the new longer lasting batteries. Last but not least, check and organize equipment like your P.F.D.s, anchor and rode, flashlight and other safety items, like navigation lights. Remember the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will inspect your boat and give you a sticker when you pass. Get it done now, not after the season starts. Alan Jackson and Guy Harvey Country Music star Alan Jackson and marine wildlife artist Guy Harvey have collaborated on a message behind the music to raise money and awareness for ocean conservation and research. Harvey created a colorful logo depicting Jackson in a fighting chair with a leaping sportfish to adorn several official 25th anniversary items, including an official t-shirt that will be sold at each concert. Alan Jackson and Guy Harvey

have agreed to donate back $5 for every item sold to marine conservation through the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, a non-profit that advocates sustainable fishing practices, funds inspired scientific research and supports innovation educational programs. April 2015

It’s time to put up the jackets, maybe Well, another winter is in the books and spring has officially arrived … or has it? This past winter was the 61st coldest on record for our area. December was the warmest month of winter with temperatures averaging nearly five degrees above normal. January was fairly typical with temperatures only .2 degrees below normal. February was a different story. We were nearly seven degrees below normal. The official snow total at Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport was only a trace, which was 2.1 inches below the 30 year average. However, we all know the ice and snow in our northern counties was substantial, especially the ice storm in February. From the data I have been seeing, we may have several chances for freezing or near freezing temperatures this month with above average rainfall. In fact, I see cooler than average temperatures continuing until June. I know everyone is cringing about that. Let’s face it, we all want to enjoy the lake on sunny warm days. Let me explain what is happening. We have a massive area of high pressure in the eastern Pacific Ocean that is now moving. This is causing warm and extremely dry conditions in the western states. In fact, many areas out west only saw about 15 percent of their usual snowfall this past winter. There are some very serious drought concerns. That same high pressure

is causing the upper level winds, the steering currents, to go up over Glenn that high pressure into Burns western Canada and then blast down into the Lanier southern states, bringing Outlook us the cooler than average weather. While we may not want to see cooler temps, they do have a silver lining. First and foremost, cooler temperatures inhibit severe storms. Our spring storms are most violent when we have sharp contrasts between cooler weather to the north and warmer temperatures here. If the cool pattern continues, there are no “weather wars” between air masses. I am not saying we won’t see severe weather this month, just less of a chance. In addition, the pollen season will be more progressive than explosive. I don’t think we’re going to see those 11,000 pollen counts this season. Based on the past 30 years of weather records, April is the driest month of the year. We average 3.36 inches of rain. However, this year we have a spring El Nino. This throws yet another wrench in the works. The above average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean change the global wind patterns. We will likely be dealing with two branches of the jet stream, the cold northern branch and the southern branch coming in across the eastern Pacific, then over Mexico, into the southeast. This southern branch is likely to transport an enormous

Throwing out the old, bringing in the new Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. In the blink of an eye, birds are chirping, trees and shrubs are blooming and we are celebrating, making plans to head to the boat after putting away all of the bulky winter clothes. At last! I am not a winter person by any stretch of the imagination. It is such a depressing season. Being holed up in the house and relegated to watching idiotic reality shows and re-runs on television just doesn’t excite me anymore. I’m not a skier or ice fisherman and if I stepped on the bathroom scales I’m sure I’ve gained more weight than my doctor would be pleased with. So I am turning over a new leaf. I am throwing out the old and bringing in the new! It’s time to clean out the closets with anything that has not been worn since

Bob & Carolyn Wilson Cruising Wilsons

last season, and make a trip to Goodwill. There are a few favorites that will remain but the others are simply reminders of how miserable I was outside walking the dogs the past several months. The home office needs rejuvenating a bit as well. There are stacks of papers and old files in the filing cabinet that need to be discarded. There’s a pile of articles that needed to be read six months ago that were only recently uncovered, and what about all of those receipts from when I did our taxes? All of this should have been at the top of the New Years resolution list! And that’s not all. What about the boat? Oh yes, there were a few things left sitting around the cabin that are out of place believing that I would put them in their

proper place the next trip to the boat. There are a couple of those yet unfinished projects like routing and securing the wires to the EPIRB that I had relocated back in May. A few electrical wire ties are all that’s needed but I was lazy then and left them sitting out along with the tools that will be required to complete the job. I have started a list of things that need to be completed on Sea Island Girl before we venture too far away from the dock. First and foremost will be a good scrubbing to get rid of the grime that has undoubtedly accumulated over the winter and I’m certain that a quick inventory of cleaners, wax and polish will no doubt uncover a few empty or near empty containers that need to be used or thrown away. It is always a good idea to keep a running inventory of the maintenance items, parts and service items but despite my attempt to do so I always find a hardened tube of silicon, loose screws or a moisture-infested Ziploc bag full of cleaning rags begging to be washed. Here are a few things on my

list that I hope will make everyone’s boating experience a pleasant one: First, spend a day detailing the boat, inside and out. Open all of the compartments and rid them of any mildew. Second, check to make sure your fuel supply is free of moisture or contaminants as many gasoline fuels breakdown rapidly if not protected. Third, check hose clamps and electrical connections and make

sure the batteries are charged and holding a charge. A few others: check all lights to ensure they are properly working, inspect all life jackets, discard items that have lost their usefulness and then toot your horn as a little pat on the back knowing that you have prepared yourself for another safe boating season. - Until next time, Bob & Carolyn Wilson

Growing strong: BP Grading pulls it all together By Pamela A. Keene Putting the finishing touches on a major dredging project at Hideaway Bay Marina in Flowery Branch, BP Grading took a plunge of its own by investing in heavy-duty equipment to keep the business growing. “We started doing grading for houses in subdivisions nearly 30 years ago, and then got into commercial development work,” said Bryan Cantrell, who owns the company. Now the firm contracts to do dredging, sewer and storm work, asphalt paving, steel fab-

rication and marine construction. “I like doing different things so that’s why we’ve kept expanding our business lines.” Cantrell learned the grading and dredging business from his father in Gwinnett in the 1970s. He started out renting equipment to suit the particular jobs and then decided to purchase what he needed. His work takes him across the Southeast, including jobs in Georgia and the Carolinas. “We even built a church for a friend of ours in California, but mostly we stay in the Southeast.”

The company also headed to New Orleans for about a year following Hurricane Katrina. BP Grading employs about a dozen people, including Brian’s brother Allen, who runs jobsites for the firm. And his father Robert also works with him part time. “We’ve done a lot of work for Hideaway Bay and other companies over the years,” he said. “We’ve been really lucky to have been able to stay busy even when things got slow.” INFO: 404 597-9657

Leapin’ lizards! LilliPad Diving Board comes to Lanier By Pamela A. Keene It sounds as though it would look funny, sticking out off a pontoon boat, but the real story is that it provides hours of fun for the whole family. The LilliPad Diving Board has arrived at Lake Lanier. When attached to a pontoon boat, the board provides a stable jumping and diving platform that doesn’t rock the boat. It’s now available at Boating Atlanta, Park Marine and Port

Royale. N&C Marine in Martin, Ga., is the Southeast’s exclusive distributor of the LilliPad Diving Board. “The LilliPad is engineered to absorb its own shock so that boat movement is minimized,” said Nathan Rhodes, owner of Boating Atlanta. “And it provides hours and hours of family fun.” It’s designed for all ages up to a maximum weight of 250 pounds. It’s adjustable, easy to install and weighs 60 pounds.

A testimonial from a customer on the LilliPad website sings the board’s benefits. “It took some convincing to get my wife to spend the money to buy this diving board for our boat and after one weekend not only is our family in love with our new toy but we saved about $100 in gas because we weren't towing tubes the entire day.” MORE INFO: www.lillipaddivingboards.com

New local art, craft connections near Lanier By Pamela A. Keene People seeking connections with local artisans and craftspeople have two new choices to browse in Hall County near Lake Lanier. Stella Jane’s Gallery on McEver Road opened last fall and now represents more than 80 local artisans and craftspeople. And just last month, Carpe Diem Gallery opened on Main Street in Flowery Branch with arts, gifts and boutique clothing. “I have always liked buying local and hand-made,” said Stella Jane’s owner Kim Gray, who is also an interior designer specializing in kitchens, baths and basements. “It seemed like the perfect way to provide a place for these craftspeople to showcase their work and to provide a place for people to buy from local artists.” Gray said that the majority of her artists, who have created everything from crocheted and knitted baby items to fine art paintings, currently live within a 30-mile radius of Gainesville. “And most of the others have some kind of connection to this area – either they grew up here or

they have family here,” she said. “This is a great place to purchase items connected with Gainesville, Hall County and Lake Lanier.” In downtown Flowery Branch, artist and painter Barbara Brown has opened Carpe Diem Gallery alongside Carpe Diem Hair Salon. She has brought together local artists, boutique clothiers and various home-décor items in the historic building on Main Street next to Common Grounds. “Our focus is on artistic living and everything in the gallery has an artistic slant,” Brown said. “From our artisan-made wearable PHOTOS BY PAMELA A. KEENE Carpe Diem Gallery (top) and Stella Jane's (bottom) are two new places art to repurposed furniture, garto pick up art around Lake Lanier. den items and work by local, national and international artists, we have created a place for people to purchase lovely items for themselves and their homes.” Carpe Diem has secured exclusive marketing of Lifetime Candles, crafted in Arkansas. “The company allows for very limited distribution and we are so proud to have Lifetime Candles here,” she said. “They are stunning, elegant and are designed to last a lifetime.”

Registration open for Poker Run By Pamela A. Keene With a goal to raise $450,000 at this year’s event, the 7th Annual Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run has opened its registration website at PiratesOfLanier.com. The event takes place from Thursday, July 16, through Sunday, July 19, and is billed as the nation’s largest charity poker run. Over the past six years, the Pirates of Lanier Poker run has raised more than $1 million for area children’s charities. This year’s recipients include Camp Sunshine, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hall County and Camp Twin Lakes. The four-day event will again be headquartered at Lanier Islands Resort, with the majority of the land events taking place in and around Sunset Cove. Participants can reserve slips at the Sunset Cove docks for the four-day event. MORE INFO:

Atlanta Botanical Garden, Gainesville opens May 2 Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Jane Harrison he garden envisioned by Gainesville philanthropists more than a decade ago will burst into bloom next month. The new Atlanta Botanical Garden, Gainesville opens May 2 after years of planning, planting and prodding investors. The extension of the Atlanta Botanical Garden will bring Gainesville much more than blossoms, trails, and horticulture; it also sprouts a cultural landscape unlike any other in the region with the backing of a Midtown Atlanta organization adept at propagating plants and crowd-pleasing programs. With monthly seasonal events like “Wine in the Woodlands,” summer concerts in the amphitheatre, and an Art with LEGO exhibit this fall, the garden cultivates a colorful arrangement for social gatherings, family fun, entertainment, and relaxation. Garden goers on opening weekend will walk through the contemporary pond-side visitor’s center into the $21 million fiveacre initial development on 168 acres given to the Atlanta garden in 2001 by Charles and Lessie Smithgall. “We are so ready to open … it’s been such a long time coming it’s almost surreal,” said Atlanta Botanical Garden President and CEO Mary Pat Matheson. She said garden planners shed “a lot of blood, sweat and tears” persuading investors to give during an economic recession and wooing a Gainesville community somewhat unfamiliar with botanical gardens. The Smithgall legacy Ultimately, residents of both cities dug in to plant the seed to grow the Smithgall’s vision. Some contributors, such as Doug and Kay Ivester, have roots in both cities. The garden’s amphitheatre bears the name of the former Coca-Cola executive and his wife who donated a large sum to the garden in Doug Ivester’s boyhood home county. Matheson asserted that the Gainesville garden is grounded in an Atlanta membership of 28,000 households and 40 years of experience attracting people to a much loved city oasis. Members at either gar-

den get free regular admission and discounts for special events at both. “The opening of this garden marks a dream come true for so many – from our donors and supporters to our staff and the Smithgall family,” Matheson said. She recalled meeting with the Smithgalls at the Atlanta garden when they presented what she described as a “wonderful and rare opportunity” to preserve the property in perpetuity, expand plant collections, and attract people across the state. Charles Smithgall, a North Georgia multi-media pioneer and owner of numerous newspapers and broadcast stations in Georgia and Alabama, died at age 91 the year after the couple finalized the garden donation. Lessie Smithgall, who turns 104 a month before the garden opens, still lives in her home on 17 acres on a garden border. Lanier is nearby About 1,000 feet of the garden borders Lake Lanier along a small inlet near the Sunset Heights development in North Hall. Garden planners looked into developing that section, but decided against it due to rough topography and prevalence of existing lake parks, according to Patrick Ceska, senior partner at Morton, Vardeman & Carlson, who has been promoting the garden project since 2005. There are no plans to create lake access. A mid-March garden preview for Lakeside News began at the Sweetbay Drive entrance, off Ga. Highway 129 North, just north of the Limestone Parkway intersection. Named for the Smithgall’s daughter, Bay, the driveway meanders between budding trees and

Inside, wall to ceiling windows in the reception room showcase a small pond, fireplace, and garden view. Designed for wedding parties and social gatherings, the patio and reception area can accommodate up to 200 people. Different backdrop for shows Outside, a wide concrete plaza and sidewalk guide visitors to the 2,000 person capacity Doug & Kay Ivester Amphitheatre with grassed tiers overlooking the center stage. There, audiences can unfold portable chairs at concerts similar to those on the Great Lawn in the Midtown garden. Matheson hinted that Gainesville concert goers will hear the same caliber national performers that play in Atlanta. In 2013-14, crowds settled on the Atlanta lawn to hear Lyle Lovett, Gavin McGraw, B-52s, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Indigo Girls, Boz Scaggs, and Creedence Clearwater Revisited. Ceska noted the only difference in the concert program appears in the backdrops: high-rise buildings tower behind the Midtown stage; a forest setting sprawls behind Gainesville’s. Gainesville’s garden will also get infused with uptown culture at a monthly Wine in the Woodlands cocktail party the third Thursday May-October. Visitors can stroll, sip martinis and listen to music and katydids under the evening sky. Ceska said attendees could A worker gets ready for the open- purchase their favorite beverages ing of the gardens. at cash bars set up by venders

along the walkway. It’s easy in this outside-theperimeter town to get really excited about big city acts coming to perform and the opportunity to drink a glass of wine in public with an ambience created by sweet-scented flowers and peeping tree frogs. Nature beckons softly and more profoundly in the Gainesville garden and will draw more attention day to day than stage shows and bartenders. The garden sidewalk curves alongside hydrangeas, native azaleas, young magnolias and underneath maples, oaks and other hardwoods. Benches and planters adorn the path, which Fockele passes by the future site of a model train exhibit and “fairy huts.” A secluded glade awaits a couple’s wedding vows. den covers five times more ground than the 30 acre Atlanta venue, where nearly every foot is packed with plantings, greenhouses, exhibits, art, and paved paths. Ceska said there is no plan to imitate the Atlanta lay-out, even if money becomes available for additional phases. “I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like that here,” he said. Much of the woodland will remain untouched and accessible only by mulched walking trails. One such trail already travels 2-3 miles into the surrounding forest. Since 2004, a 5,000 square foot greenhouse and 4-acre nursery on the Gainesville property have nurtured native plants and annuals transplanted into the Atlanta garden. Matheson said the Gainesville operation helps fulfill the garden’s mission to increase its plant collection and research programs. She added the Gainesville garden contains one of the largest research nurseries in the United States for rare and endangered plants. More than 1,272 different plants grow in the Gainesville soil. Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt brings smiles to Flowery Branch

Continued from Page 40

By Pamela A. Keene A search for dessert while on vacation in California changed Mehul and Rashmi Patel’s lives. The son and his father-in-law happened upon a franchise of Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, and – as they say – their journey to business ownership began. “The environment and the people there just took away our tiredness at the end of the day,” Mehul said. “The Menchie’s slogan ‘We Make You Smile’ is really true. With the store’s bright colors and all the flavors to choose from, it’s a great concept.”

Fockele, director of the Gainesville garden and vicepresident for horticulture at the Atlanta garden, will continue developing displays and managing the horticulture staff at both gardens. She believes the garden’s festivals, story times, educational programs, and concerts will “add another dimension” to Gainesville’s cultural landscape. Plus, she noted that when one seeks solace, “gardens are beautiful places of contemplation.”

Menchie’s, a self-service yogurt shop, started in California and has grown to more than 400 franchise locations in the United States and stores in eight countries around the world. With 110 flavors – generally there are 14 available at one time, not counting the swirled combos – and more in development, the store features fresh ingredients

and milk from grass-fed cows. “Menchie’s uses milk from ‘Happy Cows’ at proprietary organic dairies in California,” Mehul said. “All our fruits and toppings are local and we pride ourselves on freshness.” In addition to a wide selection of flavors, such as Rockin’ Salted Caramel, Premier Pistachio, Takes the Cake Batter and German Chocolate Cake, the store has a Chill Bar with fresh fruits, various sauces and other toppings. Guests help themselves to any of the seven yogurt machines, pile

on the toppings and pay by weight. The store also sells prepacked 16- and 32-ounce takeaway packages. Rashmi Patel is a former computer IT architect and Mehul worked in the resort business in the Midwest. Mehul’s wife Margi is the store leader; she also handles bookings for parties and events. Menchie’s in Flowery Branch is located in the Kohl’s/Target Shopping Center on Spout Springs Road across from Publix. MORE INFO: 770-965-0911

April showers bring May flowers, but you can get started now By early to mid-April, it’s time to start enhancing your landscape’s summer color. The local nurseries and big box retailers are literally spilling over with flats of vibrant petunias, stately begonias, cheery marigolds and dozens of other types of annuals to bring a swath of color to your driveway, front walk or flower-bed borders. With so many choices, how can you decide? Maybe you always choose the same kinds of annuals year after year and put them in the same places – begonias mixed with periwinkles to line the walkway to your front door, yellow and orange marigolds along the fence beside your vegetable garden or shadeloving impatiens under the trees in the pine islands. Why not mix it up this year? For countless summers, we used bronze-leaf pink and red begonias near our front door. Then last year, a trip to a different nursery made me break with tradition. I purchased five flats of white salvia and planted them in groups along our curved walkway and next to my hybrid tea rose garden. What a difference in the look of our landscape. The white spires

Atlanta Marine expands to Aqualand Marina as Atlanta Yacht Sales By Pamela A. Keene Atlanta Marine has launched a new division, Atlanta Yacht Sales, to offer larger boats, including houseboats and cruisers. Opening April 1 at Aqualand Marina, Atlanta Yacht Sales will have a large presence at Aqualand, with a floating showroom,

sales offices and an outdoor showroom. The floating showroom is now open on ZJ dock to showcase houseboats and cruisers. Additionally, Atlanta Yacht Sales has opened sales offices on the lower level of Aqualand’s Ship’s Chandlery, remodeling and renovating

the 1,300-square-foot space into a customer-friendly location that includes a collection of sports memorabilia. “This was a natural step for Atlanta Marine to get into the houseboat, and yacht/cruiser business,” said Darren Matthews, partner with Atlanta Yacht Sales.

The three ‘P’s: Proper Preparation Prevents Boat training is a constant, never-ending process. A few courses, a test or two, even a license does not entirely meet the objective of accident prevention and making boating safer. It is the application of maritime education that produces the greatest results and is proven to work best. And that takes place with practical experience, the most influential source to increase knowledge, proficiency, and especially confidence. Preparation – at its core – is intelligent planning for any situation that may arise and practicing the steps until they become familiar. For example: knowing your position or location with reasonable accuracy at any given time can be a huge challenge, especially on Lake Lanier where the shoreline is a constant backdrop of a very long tree-line. A sudden drop in visibility or nightfall adding to the uncertainty, other vessels in proximity and you have the making of a bad time on the water. It is important to educate yourself with your navigation systems and even learn visual piloting. Picture yourself in such a predicament, not knowing what will happen next. Developing a plan for such an event can dramatically improve your odds, help you get safely through the incident, and sometimes prevent it altogether. Most mariners now rely on

The day will feature onedesign race boat demonstrations and an introduction to the LLSC Junior Sailing Program that takes place each summer. Facilities include a clubhouse overlooking the lake, a campground, beach, and restrooms with showers. The club

offers members boat storage in 88 wet slips as well as dry storage for more than 200 trailered boats. There’s a repair yard for member self-service on the grounds. The club has a regular racing schedule that includes one-design classes, as well as Portsmouth/dinghy, and auxiliary/PHRF fleets. Many members compete regionally and nationally as well on all levels in

various age groups. Lake Lanier Sailing Club was founded in 1959 and moved to its current location in Flowery Branch in 1960. Advanced registration is requested by going to the website. For more information and further details about the Open House, visit the club’s website at llsc.org or call 404 414-4740.

“Our new offices have the best view on the lake and we encourage people to come by and see us.” The company will also operate sales facilities for trailerable boats and a pre-owned lot near the center of Aqualand. “We will have another floating showroom for houseboats on Sunset Dock as well,” Matthews said. “Big things are happening at Aqualand and we’re glad to be part of it.”

Atlanta Marine celebrates its 20th year in business this year. It has locations on Lanier Islands Parkway, at Hideaway Bay Marina, on Allatoona Lake and at Lake Burton. It sells a wide variety of boats, including Chaparral, Moomba, Supra, Monterey, Robalo, Bennington and Everglades. MORE INFO: www.AtlantaMarine.com

Keep Corps permit information current Do you know whether your permit contact information is up to date with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers? If you are a permit holder for a dock or other approved shoreline project, please ensure that your contact information is correct. Here’s why. The Corps currently maintains a Shoreline Outgrants database that includes the name, address, phone and email address, so that we can easily access information to assist with various inquiries. The information in this database is also used to expedite contact with permit holders for various reasons. The Corps operates a Shoreline Help Desk for Lake Lanier to provide customer service to people who hold the more than 10,500 Shoreline Use Permits (dock permits), answer questions from prospective buyers of properties that include shoreline permits, and respond to questions from the public regarding various permits and properties adjacent to Lake Lanier. When our database contains current and accurate information, it is much quicker and easier to provide good customer service and respond accurately to inquiries. Additionally, the Corps periodically sends out correspondence and communications to permittees, such as notices, reminders of the need for permit renewal, and other pertinent documents. Much of this type of information is distributed through the US Postal Service. In too many cases, this important correspondence is returned to our office marked “Undeliverable” because the permittee has moved and their postal forwarding order has expired. When we check our database for an alternate method of contact, we often find that the phone number is no longer operating. More and more people are discontinuing their land lines and only using their mobile phone

number as their main contact. If this is the case with you, please notify us of your new phone number. When time permits, the Corps may research contact information through county tax offices to identify property owners and find their most current contact information. This is a time-consuming process that can cause further delays in our ability to communicate in a timely manner with you. To help us provide better customer service and respond to citizens, the Corps plans to implement a new database that will be accessible to rangers from their vehicles. Currently being tested, the new database will allow real-time updates that rangers can transmit from the field. The new database, which we hope will be ready within the next 12 months, should also allow us to communicate with permittees via email – as long as we have accurate email addresses – and will save on the costs of postage and printing. Some letters from the Chief Ranger will still be sent via standard postal means. It is the goal of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to serve the public better and the processes smoother for you and us. If you have changes or updates in your contact information, please call the Shoreline Help Desk at 770945-9531. The Help Desk is manned on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The primeval rainforests of Ketchikan are a wonder of nature A hundred feet above the clear waters of Bostwick Inlet on Gravina Island near the village of Ketchikan a lone bald eagle watches intently. In a boat far below, an angler is in the midst of battling an unhappy rockfish from its home in kelp beds more than 50 feet deep. The hungry eagle knows that fast food is on the way! Less than a second after the tiny fish made its first splash on the surface, the eagle spread his six-foot wingspan in readiness. Despite having bulging eyes and a good case of the bends from being forced up so swiftly from the depths, the small rockfish was unhooked and thrown back into the water no more than five feet from the boat. It would have only taken 30 seconds for the struggling fish to have regained its composure and head back to the safety of the kelp beds, but that was too much time. In an instant, the huge bird traversed the hundred feet from the tree above, and in one precise movement, sunk its razor-sharp talons into the hapless fish and sped skyward with a tasty tidbit. The anglers were both surprised and amazed by a sight that happens frequently in Southeast Alaska. Probably one of the least known sections of our most northern state is the region near Ketchikan along the famous Inside Passage from Northern Washington to Anchorage. This

MORE INFO: 770-289-1543 JFish51@aol.com www.georgiafishing.com area is also one of the best salt and freshwater fisheries in the world. Within a 50-mile radius of the seaport and floatplane docks at Ketchikan, an angler can easily catch five species of Pacific salmon, four species of freshwater trout, three species of sea run trout, Arctic grayling and more than 30 species of saltwater fish, including huge halibut. In reality, it is much easier to catch fish than it is to fail, and that can’t be said of too many places anymore. Unlike most of Alaska, however, the Ketchikan area is in the middle of a primeval rainforest that is made up of hundreds of islands that are completely covered with forests of 70- to 100-foot tall trees. The abundance of trees combined with snow accumulations in the higher mountains of the area endows this part of Alaska with a unique weather pattern, which is a nice way of say-

ing that it rains nearly 300 days each year. The climate is considered to be mild in comparison to the rest of Alaska. Summers range from the 50s to the 70s, and winters are usually in the 30 to 50 degree range with relatively little snow or ice. Rainsuits and aboveankle boots, known as “Ketchikan sneakers,” are the normal attire for most visitors to the area. Despite the rain, during the summer, local residents go about their business in short-sleeve shirts, shorts and normal sneakers. Bald eagles are so numerous that tourists often mistake these huge birds for seagulls and are usually astounded by their first close encounter. Visitors to Ketchikan might also see whales, seals, black and brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, otters, mink, wolves, grouse, both common and Arctic loons, as well as numerous other waterfowl. In addition, the people are friendly and the surrounding area has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Though the logistics of reaching this breathtaking part of the world have become easier because of the abundance or cruise ships, the first glimpse of this vastness and beauty makes one feel as Sherry Simpson did when she wrote these words, “In the slow swell of dawn, the sea stretched before us like time, large enough to swallow all history, legend, desire, imagination ... We sailed on an ocean awash in the stories of all those who came before us in cedar canoes, sloops of war, merchant schooners, steamers, freighters, fishing boats, dories. In the ghostly light, they

moved with us ... the Tlingit Indians, the Russian, British, and American explorers, the seafarers and traders, the settlers and sailors, and everyone who ever imagined, like me, to be the first to witness this place.” Visiting Ketchikan always brings back a host of wonderful memories from my many trips to this unique place. Though known as “The Salmon Capitol of the World” during earlier times, this tiny Tlingit fishing village has been reborn and continues to survive due to the coming of cruise

ships. Adventures that once revolved around fishing are now more about experiencing the wildlife and beauty of the area. If your plans include Southeast Alaska this summer, now is the time to start checking the possibilities. For more information, visit: www.visit-ketchikan.com. Trapped in the Big Box in pursuit of the perfect shirt While Philip continues his spring sabbatical, please enjoy an oldie from the archives. I don’t go to the big box stores that often. It’s too much like an indoor county fair without the rides and the livestock. In a Big Box, the customers are the livestock. And we all know what happens to livestock sooner or later. But recently, I overcame my concerns. I needed a shirt that goes with everything so that I would never again have to do any color coordinating in the morning when my eyelids have fused shut due to a combination of sand and weeping barnacles. For the longest time, I stood outside of the Pro Cod Shop, engaged in mental reconnoitering, memorizing the doors, the exits, and the blind alleys. Just as I was getting comfortable with the whole enterprise, I heard the swoosh of the automatic doors, and I was sucked inside. As a matter of necessity, I just hung with the school of Cod that I came in with until the wave broke and I found myself in the women’s camouflage department.

moment, and then I looked at the tiny lemming feet pressed into the Phillip cement. When I looked back, up Sartain he was gone – blending in as if he’d never been there at all. Break With no other choice, I folfrom the lowed the tracks and found myLake self staring at a mountain of shirts on racks. “No shirt on earth is worth this,” I mumbled. But as I I didn’t see any cameo undies that turned to leave, something caught my wife didn’t already have, so I the corner of my eye. moved on. It was The Shirt. My heart was Four hours and seven miles pounding and my head was spinlater, I accidentally stumbled into ning. “Relax, shopper, relax. the men’s department. Profoundly Don’t spook the shirt – aim and relieved, I tackled the first sales squeeze.” It stood out against a rep I saw. Even so, he remained backdrop of bizarre color sullenly indifferent, “OK, you got schemes on oversized UV prome, so what?” tected fishing shirts. I’ve always believed in catch I bolted, and when I did, the and release, but I wasn’t about to heads of 17 male cods jerked uplet him off the hook that easy: right into full scanning mode and “Where is men’s casual wear, and it was open shirt season. As I don’t mess me around, either.” reached for the shirt, everything He pointed to the floor. “See lapsed into slow motion, and I the lemming tracks in the floor? saw a reaching hand. I took him Just follow those.” out at the knees, snatched the “How do I know that I can shirt and kept running. trust you?” I hopped on the back of a com“Hey, dude, I could care less. plementary wheelchair and with a All I know is that it’s time for my small bribe, copped a ride all the three and a half hour break.” way back to checkout. And that is I looked at him severely for a where all my fears were realized.

Vesper’s Marine Service

At the checkout counter was the sales rep I’d released hours ago, fully refueled by his twohour nap. He grinned at me like a rabid fox. Careful not to make eye contact, I handed over my purchase and he casually rung me up and took my money. On the precipice of freedom, he handed me the bag, and them abruptly pulled back. “Oh,” he said,” the tag is missing.” “That’s OK, I blurted. Don’t need it.” “Sorry, sir, but you can’t leave without it. You’ll have to go back to the men’s department and locate the tag so I can scan it in.” In desperation, I whined, “But that could take an hour.” “I know,” he said, “please hurry, we close in 20 minutes.” Somehow, I made it there and back in record time and presented the tag for scanning. The scan resulted in a series of strobe lights gyrating in all directions and a siren screeching like bats in heat. Before I knew what was happening, Down Home Land Security arrived, and I was wanded, patted down, and placed in a clear Plexiglas booth by the exit door to await the manager and further

instructions. Standing there on the inside looking out, a beefy fellow and his beefy family wondered over and peered at me. “Not worth the ammunition,” he told his kids. “Probably too stringy anyway” his wife agreed.” It was about 3 a.m. before my wife arrived, producing an affidavit showing that I had once been friends with someone who knew somebody who had once been a member of the NRA. Walking back to my car, she took my bag, “So. Let’s see your shirt,” she said. I handed it over in a fog. She looked in the bag and then back at me. “Don’t you ever get me out of the bed again for something that ugly.” Oh, I’ll never go in another Big Box again for the rest of my life. But you better believe that I’m wearing that shirt. Phillip Bond Sartain is a Gainesville, GA lawyer and freelance writer.
