By Pamela A. Keene Changes of all kinds are afoot on the south end of Lake Lanier. First, Aquamarina Lazy Days Marina has been sold to Westrec, owners of Holiday and Sunrise Cove. Second, improvements and upgrades continue at both properties. “With Lazy Days right next door, it just made sense at this time,” said Alex Laidlaw with Westrec. “And it’s as though we’ve come full circle, because both marinas were started by the Beachems, so it’s time we put the two back together. Lazy Days is a fine property and we’ll be operating both under one management umbrella.” The new name is Lazy Days at Holiday on Lake Lanier. Jeff Ellis, chief financial officer of Westrec echoed Laidlaw’s comments. “It’s not often that a property of this size and quality is on the market, and to have it adjacent to one of our marinas made it an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.” Laidlaw said that Westrec has a corporate investment plan that includes additions and improvements at Lazy Days. “We’re building a state-of-the-art bath
house at the back of the Lazy Days store with six private units that include showers, vanities and toilets,” he said “We’ve been this at other high-end marinas so we’re bringing this concept to Lake Lanier. There will be other upgrades as well.” Holiday has continued its improvements with its new fuel dock. With concrete decking, it has 14 pumps on six dispensers with credit card readers. It’s all new and includes our new ship’s store,” he said. The marina sells premium gas, diesel and the new REC-90 octane non-ethanol fuel. Additionally, Holiday is renovating bath houses on the property and the company is renovating E Dock to a high-end high-roof covered dock for cruisers. It will have 20 44-foot slips and 10 52-foot slips. The Westrec purchase is just the latest news involving marinas on Lanier. Late last year Aqualand Marina was acquired by Safe Harbor Marinas, based in Dallas. The company owns 36 marinas across the country and is continuing to acquire others as part of its growth plan.
Lazy Days at Holiday on Lake Lanier, above, is now part of the Westrec family. Holiday Marina’s new gas dock and ship’s store, below.

WE LOVE OUR CLI ENTS! Pat and Janie Glissen were a joy to work with throughout the selling process. They have now retired to the North Georgia Mountains to be closer to family. We will miss them. - Sheila Davis It was our good fortune to have Sheila Davis list and sell our home on Lake Lanier. Like most sellers of high end homes, we were occasionally frustrated with the time it took to sell, however throughout the process Sheila was always patient and confident in her approach and recommendations. She knows the market, did her homework, and was always professional and thorough. She is also respectful that you are the client. She will stand her ground and make the case for her approach....but, it's not "my way or the highway"....we had productive and open discussions on strategy. Sheila really starred in navigating us thru the sales agreement negotiation and a complex set of hurdles placed before us by our buyer to reach closure and ultimately closing. She was " hands on " and collaborative with us and the buyer's agent, came up with creative solutions, and kept us optimistic, calm, and focused on the final result. Check your boat’s required equipment before the boating season We have enjoyed spring-like temperatures that made us the envy of many in the colder regions of our country. The next few weeks will be a perfect time to make a check of state of Georgia required equipment to make sure you have everything you need onboard your boat before venturing out onto the water. For a complete explanation of all the Georgia laws covering equipment, please refer to the “Handbook of Georgia Boating Laws and Responsibilities” which is published annually by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. We also cover this subject in our one-day “About Boating Safely” public education course. State registration Your vessel must have an in date State of Georgia decal posted on each side of the bow, just ahead of the state issued numbers. For registration information visit: www.goboatgeorgia.com. Personal floatation devices All vessels must have at least one USCG approved Type I, II, III, or V life jacket for each person on board, and they must fit properly. In addition, Type V PFDs are acceptable only when worn and are securely fastened.

Navigation lights Failure to operate the necessary lights is one of the leading causes of fatal accidents in Georgia. Lights must be turned on from “sundown to sunrise” and during other times of limited visibility such as during rain, heavy haze, or fog. Visual distress signals Visual distress signals allow vessel operators to signal for help in the event of an emergency, and you will need signals appropriate for both daylight and darkness. Sound producing devices In periods of reduced visibility or whenever a vessel operator needs to signal his or her intentions or position, a sound-producing device is essential. Vessels
Features:
• Available in 3, 4, 5 & 6 step models • Pontoon boat and swim platform models available • Superior craftsmanship • High quality aluminum construction • Textured plate aluminum steps to prevent slipping • Fixed mounting or flip up mounts (included) to allow the unit to be rotated out of the water for storage • Easy to install • Lightweight • Lifetime limited warranty The Aqua-Stairs® dock ladder is great for people and pets. These steps actually enable some people to get in and out of the water where they were prvenioulsy unable with conventional dock ladders. They are just like a staircase! Why
climb out when you can walk out? Patented.
larger than 26 feet must have a horn or whistle or other soundproducing devices. Fire extinguishers Most vessels are required to have a Type B fire extinguisher on board, in serviceable condition, and readily available, not in a box hidden away in some compartment. Ventilation systems The purpose of ventilation systems is to avoid explosions by removing flammable gases. All gasoline powered vessels must have at least two ventilation ducts fitted with cowls to remove fumes. If your vessel is equipped with a power ventilation system, turn it on for at least four minutes both after fueling and before starting your engine. Backfire flame arrestors Because boat engines may backfire, all powerboats (except outboards) that are fueled with gasoline must have a USCG approved backfire flame arrestor on each carburetor of every engine. Mufflers Vessel operators may not hear sound signals or voices if the engine is not properly muffled. The exhaust on every internal combustion engine used on any vessel
must be muffled or baffled and water injected (except those engines where the exhaust goes through the lower unit or outdrive) so as to decrease noise. Vessel safety checks The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free Vessel Safety Checks where we check to ensure that your vessel has the proper re-
quired equipment and that it is in good working order, and we award you with a windshield decal for your vessel showing that you passed the check. There is no penalty for failing, and we will recheck your vessel after you’ve made corrections. Roy Crittenden is the Public Affairs Officer for Flotilla 29.
Safe boating course set for Apr. 23 Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Lanier, announces a one-day, seven-lesson “About Boating Safely” course. The course is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2016. This course also serves as a PWC certified course for children under the age of 16. This course will be given at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Operations Center, 6595 Lights Ferry Rd., Flowery Branch, Ga., on the left just before the entrance to Aqualand Marina. Classes run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and cost is $35. Discounts available for additional family members. Course contents include:
• Know your boat • Before getting underway • Navigating the waterways • Operating your vessel safely • Boating’s legal requirements • Boating emergencies • Enjoying watersports • State of Georgia regulations State law now requires any person born after January 1, 1998, must have completed a boater education course approved by the Ga. DNR before he or she may legally operate a motorized vessel on Georgia state waters. Successful completion of this course may result in a reduction in your boat’s insurance premium.

The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant
A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides Lake level: Down 1.1 feet Clarity: Creeks stained, main lake clear Temperature: 50s Bass fishing is good. We experienced a cold front recently that really dropped the water temperatures. We had been averaging in the low 60s but now just the mid 50s in the lower lake. The largemouth had started to bed, but now have pulled off and only a few remain. As the water continues to warm back up, we expect to see a return of the bedding largemouth as well as a resumption of the normal pre spawn spotted bass behaviors. Keep a close eye on your Lowrance electronics for water temperature readings and note the areas that are trending warmer and focus on those. A jerkbait has been our first choice in the mornings. The focus with these baits should be fairly shallow in pockets and in the backs of creeks, as well as shallower rocky points and humps, both in creeks and on the main lake. When the jerkbait bite slows down, switch to a worm and a Chattahoochee jig in these same places. Toss these around points at the mouths of spawning pock-
ets and on secondary points. The dock bite is still there and dependable on most sunny days. Skip a worm or a creepy crawler on a jig head or a weightless Senko around and under docks in 10 to 20 feet of water when the sun is up. Shallower, long running flat points are starting to hold fish as well. Often these fish can be found in the 10 to 15 foot depth ranges on top of these points. Work a Chattahoochee Jig or shaky head worm slowly on these areas. A jerkbait has been productive on these shallower rocky points as well, especially for some bigger fish. Again, other than early morning, wind is important for this bite. The largemouth are up shallow all around the lake. Look in the backs of creeks and pockets to find these critters. Docks in these areas are a good bet for these fish. A number of lures can work depending on the conditions, but all the normal fare are good choices. I look for a fluke to play a big role for the shallower fish and the dock fish in the next few days as we once again warm up. We found a good spinner bait bite shallow in the pockets before the
cold front hit. I look for this to return soon as well. This report brought to you by Jimbo On Lanier 770 542-7764 www.jimboonlanier.com. Striper fishing has been good recently. The cold temperatures, a drop in barometric pressure, high winds and a full moon did not slow the fishing. Spring is here and the fish are in pre spawn and aggressive. Blueback herring, gizzard shad and trout are all working on unweighted free lines 80 to 100 feet behind the boat. Fish your planner boards with un weighted lines 35 to 50 feet behind the board. Keep your trolling motor speed between .6 and 1.0 miles per hour. As the sun rises add split shots to your lines to vary your baits depth in the water column. The Blueback herring have been small, so don’t forget to downsize you hook. We are using Gamakatsu Octopus hook size #2 and #4. Focus half way back in the creeks and pull baits over a 20 to 50 foot bottom. The Umbrella rig is working. Set your Umbrella rigs at 50 to 70 feet behind the boat and pull at 2.6 to 3.3 mph anywhere you see bait at 0 to 30

feet deep. Flat Creek, Six Mile Creek, Balus Creek, Thompson Creek, Bald Ridge Creek and Little River are all good places to start. This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of www.bigfishonguide.com. Crappie fishing: Water temperature is an average of 61 degrees, with some spots in the backs of creeks marking a few degrees warmer. Fishing remains good to excellent. We are in the middle of the spawn, and the bite is good throughout the day, with overcast days working to your advantage. Try fishing blow downs and the weeds in shallow water, using a popping cork and a curly tail. Minnows will also work if you prefer live bite. You will notice that you are starting to catch some darker fish, (males) in the shallows, as some of the females have pulled away from the
spawning areas toward deeper water around docks. We’ve been catching fish as shallow as one foot away from the bank. Docks in 15 feet or less are still producing bigger fish than in the shallows. The best method for fishing the docks is shooting your jig in toward the darkest part of the dock. Of course, crappie are structure oriented fish, so finding a dock with some type of structure below will be helpful. Your Lowrance side scan will assist in this. Hair jigs and Bobby Garland soft body jigs with a straight tail are both working around the docks. Be safe on the water as the lake is getting more crowded! Wear your life jacket, it can save your life! This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. www.laniercrappieanglers.net.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK LCKC athletes competing for Olympic spots in National Trials on Lanier By Jane Harrison Dreams will come true and hearts will be broken at Lake Lanier Olympic Park this month and next in two high stakes canoe/kayak competitions leading up to the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Eight local potential 2016 Olympians and one other who began his Olympic quest on Lake Lanier will be among the nation’s best vying for spots on the U.S. National Team April 29-30. The winners will be back at the park in May for the final Olympic continental qualifier for sprint paddlers before the 2016 Games. Plenty of other Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club paddlers, many of whom may have eyes on possible Olympic berths in 2020, will also compete in the April trials for the National team, which year to year has a strong LCKC contingent. The home water advantage is a plus, according to LCKC High Performance 2 Coach Claudiu Ciur, who also serves as head coach of the National Team. “We have the support: friends, family, all Gainesville community will be a part of this process” on the Road to Rio, Ciur commented by email from training camp last month in Melbourne, Fla. Ciur, a former Romanian Olympic team canoeist, came to Lanier first as a competitor on his own Olympic quest. Although known to occasionally hop in a boat to race with his LCKC squad, he pretty much relinquished his personal Olympic chase to pursue a different dream: that of Ciur coaching Olympic contenders. “When, I started coach LCKC back in December, 2008, I started with a goal to build a pyramid on the long term plan. There were hard times and difficulties I went through in last 2-3 years at LCKC. But, the athletes’ team spirit and support was always there for me,” he said. “The dream is close to truth!” Ciur wrote, exuding confidence in the young crew, which he hopes will put more than two or three competitors on the water in Rio. “All my hard work and commitment as a LCKC Coach in last seven years will (get) paid off very soon. I believe (in) the athletes I coach!” Canoeist Ben Hefner, one of Ciur’s protégés, said it’s hard to describe his feelings about racing in some of the biggest events of his life. He’ll board his boat feeling honored to have the chance to qualify for the Olympics. “To be able to share that moment with my hometown, friends, and family just makes it all the more Hefner special. I am really looking forward to this opportunity,” he said by email.
Ciur said that although his athletes “are the youngest in the field” in their 20s, they can go stroke-for-stroke against more seasoned paddlers. “They race against (athletes in their) 30’s with more experience. But, all depends on the day and the moment of races when all athletes from North and South America will start from straight line start gates” at the Pan American Championships May 19-22. But, before lining up at Pan Ams, paddlers must finish first in their events at National Trials. “The winner from US Trials events will race at Pan Ams … The winner from Pan Ams will go to Rio,” Ciur explained. The near life-long paddler and coach said he has “strategic race plans” aimed at putting his paddlers between the finish buoys first. “As, I always tell myself when comes to competition day: The best will win!” LCKC paddlers, who have traveled to numerous international competitions in the run up to Rio, expected to return to Lanier in late March after spending nearly four months training in Florida. Tim Hornsby, a 2012 Olympic sprint paddler who discovered paddling as a youngster with LCKC and still races under the team name, has been practicing with the Canadian team and Mark de Jonge, whom Claudiu described as “the fastest 200 meter paddler in the Hornsby world.” Hornsby seeks a medal this year to follow-up his Olympic debut four years ago. Ciur believes Hornsby and any of his eight LCKC paddlers “can quickly go to Rio.” 2016 LCKC Olympic hopefuls and their events are listed below. For race schedules: www.lckc.org. • Tim Hornsby: Men’s K1-200m and possibly K2200m • Chris Miller: Men’s K1-1000m and K2 -1000m with Stanton Collins • Stanton Collins: Men’s K1-1000m and K21000m with Chris Miller • Aaron Mullican: Men’s K11000m and K2 1000m with Kalei Kaho’okele (Hawaii) • Alex McLain: Women’s K1500m and K2 500m • Farran Smith: Women’s K1500m and K2-5000 with Sammie Barlow (San Diego) McLain • Ben Hefner: Men’s C1-200m • Ian Ross: Men’s C1-1000m and C2-1000m with Gavin Ross • Gavin Ross: Men’s C1-200m and C2-1000m with Ian Ross.

So, what are the values of these programs to you?
Before you ansswer, just think abou ut these questions:
i If LLA had not removed 25 ² 40 tons of trash each year for the last 27 years, what would your view of Lake Lanier look like?
i If LLA had not monitored lake quality for the past 15 years, wh w at wo w uld we know about the condition of the lake?
i If LLA had not picked up the challenge of removing abandoned boats and derelict docks, who would?
i If LLA had not accepted the challenge of installing solar lights in the lake, who would have? ?
i If LLA did not work wiith city, countyy, state and federal officials on Lake Lanier issues, who would have?
i If LLA did not create a project to protect islands that are disappearing from erosion, who would have? As they say, a picture is work a thousand words, so take a minute to scan through the attached story boards about these projects. The bottom line is that if LLA did not exist, you would probably create an organization to do what it does. But fortunately LLA has worked on these and other issues for the last 45 years as a volunteer organization.

Take the proper steps to get ready for boating season The U.S. Coast Guard’s motto is “Semper Paratus,” meaning “Always Ready.” The question is, will your boat be properly equipped and running for the start of this boating season. Now is the time to check your maintenance log to make sure you have completed your spring “get ready” list. Re-inspect all fuel lines, water separators and filters. Check all of your wiring and make sure you didn’t have any nesting birds or squirrels over the winter. Check thru-hull fittings and sea-cocks, make sure the valves open and close easily. Make sure bilge pumps operate properly. All hoses from thru-hull fittings should be double clamped, with U.S.C.G. approved stainless steel hose clamps. Don’t forget fire extinguishers and PFDs and replace if needed. Make sure electronics are properly working. Check all navigation lights. Inspect all U.S.C.G required equipment. If you are not entirely sure of the equipment you are required to have on board your boat, get a copy of C.G. 169, usually available at your marina store and other outlets . You can also call the Coast Guard Auxiliary to sign up for one of their free inspections. They give you a windshield sticker which shows you passed inspection. This could help you from being stopped for an inspection by patrolling officers. Remember, your maintenance log can be kept online, with reminders for maintenance that will need to be done. If you use a boatyard for boat maintenance, try www.mytaskit.com. It’s a software tool that brands itself as the solution to bridge the coordination and information gap between boat owners, service professionals and boat builders. Set up that maintenance schedule and log, keep up with what needs to be done, and you will be “Always Ready.” Tattoo your topsiders Sperry Topsiders have been around for years and regarded as perhaps the best boating shoe around. Mr. Sperry noticed how well his dog or cat stayed firm on deck in rough weather, so he magnified the foot pads and used that pattern for the Topsiders sole. Now one of Sperry’s employees who was a customer of Rob Hotte’s “Solid Gold Tattoo Parlor in Queens, N.Y. got some tattoo’s on his Topsiders. Next thing you know he had tattooed 300 pairs of employee shoes. The tattooing
Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments
must be a success as Sperry is flying Hottee to a different city every weekend for special events and store openings. They even flew him to New Zealand. People are putting boat names, ship wheels and anchors. Check with Sperry Topsiders if you want your shoes tattooed. Update on heads Thetford has come out with an award winning marine portapotti. It’s a lightweight and convenient non-permanent sanitation system. Flushing is battery powered and it has level indicators for both the fresh and waste tanks. MSRP is $150. Check out: www.thetfordmarine.com. For permanent installation heads, research Dometic’s Vacuflush 5009. It fits a wide array of small power boats. Also Headhunter and Raritan have excellent new models ranging from $600 to $1,500. All have good ratings, it just depends which one is best for your boat. Every head should have a sign that states “Don’t put anything in here unless you have eaten it first.” Invariably you get land lubbers on board and they throw trash in the head which stops it up and creates a nasty clean up job. Some of the new heads have macerators. So mind that sign and you won’t have a bad clean-up job. Bow fishing That’s right, fishing with a bow and arrow. Since we have an overabundance of Asian Carp in some rivers and lakes, the compound bow is being used. The compound bow is rigged with sights and a line that’s attached to the arrow. The line comes off a reel that looks like a Zebco 202. Tracker Marine has made a special boat for bow fishing. It’s called the Grizzley 2071 MVX. It has a raised platform that will accommodate two hunters/fishermen with lights under the platform that show where the fish are. Competition has been so keen that the Bow Fishing Association of America (BAA) has formed, and they keep track of record fish that are caught. Bass Pro Shops has taken the lead in starting tournaments The U.S.
Open Bow Fishing Championship which has a $25.000 prize. They have also had the first Bass Pro Shops Bow Fishing World’s Fair. The B.A.A. recorded the 244 pound 8 ounce Alligator Gar shot by Robin Parks of Texas and a 92 pound 8 once Big-Head Carp shot by Darren Opel in Illinois. If you want to try bow fishing contact B.A.A. or Bass Pro Shops. Record fish Wes Carlton, of Gainesville, GA was fishing on Lake Rabun on February 19th when he landed a large walleye pike. After a weigh-in and contacting the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division, he found out his 14 pound 2 ounce, 31 and a half inch fish had beat the state record established in 1996 by almost three pounds. A new state record has to be one ounce or greater. The Wildlife Division says it’s been expecting some large catches out of Lake Rabun. More walleye information can be found at: www.gofishgeorgia.com. Griffin fisherman wins Byron Kenny of Griffin tallied a five bass limit totaling 16 pounds 17 ounces to win the FLW Bass Fishing League Bulldog Division Tournament on Lake Lanier. His catch earned him $4,763. He used a shad colored fish head spinner, a citrus shad colored strike king KVD and a HC square bill silent crank bait. Power-pole was the tournament sponsor. Tips for buying used boat You have been to the boat show and decided you could save money buying a used one. Ask the owner to see the maintenance log. Check the power plant. Dirty oil and corrosion will give you an indication of what kind of maintenance it has had. Check hull for damage or repairs. A fiberglass hull with wood in the transom or deck could have dry rot. Decks can also have plywood below the fiberglass that can dry rot. Check for stress cracks. Inspect electrical systems, especially the batteries, all navigation lights and electronic devices, VHF radio, and depth sounder. Chances are the canvas, upholstery, carpet and vinyl will show wear and may need replacing. If it is a boat with a trailer, make sure you check tires, bearings, rollers, bunks, lights, and winch. If after checking all that I have listed you feel it’s a good buy then contact a marine surveyor to go over the boat and conduct a
sea trial. You have to have a survey for your insurance and financing so get a surveyor that they will accept. Finally, take the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s safe boating course and have your boat inspected. Safety advice Get PLB’s (personal locator beacons) on all PFDs. That way, if someone goes overboard, they will be easier to locate. If you go
offshore make sure you have an EPIRB unit. Last but not least tell someone on shore where you are going and when you will return. Don’t be a statistic, boat smart and safely. Practice safe boating, be courteous and I’ll see you on the water. Mike Rudderham is a veteran marine surveyor with more than 40 years experience in the marine industry.

LLA makes good on commitments; annual meeting sets record attendance By Pamela A. Keene A day of threatening weather turned sunny just in time for the annual meeting of the Lake Lanier Association on March 19. Held at Port Royale Marina, the obvious draw – more than 400 people preregistered – was the fish fry prepared by the Lanier Crappie Club. The fresh catch yielded more than 1,600 crappie filets that were hand-breaded, deep fried and served to the crowd that gathered at Pelican Pete’s restaurant. Members cooked fried fish and what seemed like thousands of hush puppies for most of the afternoon to get ready for the meeting. The association conducted the usual business of electing board members for the coming year. Congressman Doug Collins also gave a report of political happenings. Various committee members gave updates about their projects: • Adopt-a-Lake – initiated in 2000, the program tests 25 stations each month, reporting on weather, water clarity, temperature. Twenty-four volunteers also filter water samples to check for chlorophyll a presence. • Rip Rap Initiative – from a recent University of North Georgia study of 21 islands around the lake, research showed that there’s an average loss of 11 percent due to erosion. The 2015 pilot program at Three Sisters Island will be followed by four projects near these landmarks in 2016: Van Pugh, Aqualand, Browns Bridge and Forsyth County Island. • Solar Lights – as of a December 2015, 186 lights have been installed on hazards around the lake, mostly below Browns Bridge. In 2016, the association plans to install another 120. • Safe Lakes – the association has established a monitoring and maintenance program, contracting with Solar Services of Georgia, which will inspect lights monthly and use an automated status database. • Shore Sweep – the event is more successful than ever before with the advance collection and the use of the TrashOut app that allows users to photograph and mark trash with GPS coordinates for pickup by volunteers. The app is free. In 2015, more than 50 tons of trash, debris, Styrofoam and other scrap was removed from the lake. The 2016 event will take place on September 24 with 12 Shore Sweep sites. The group has asked for more volunteer boat captains to assist in this year’s clean up.
Wilton Rooks spoke about the work of the AFC Stakeholders organization and the ongoing pressures on the lake as a result of growth. But perhaps the best part of the meeting – at least to those in the association who have diligently worked on this project for the past several years – was that the Georgia Legislature has allocated $25,000 to assist with the removal of abandoned boats in 2017. “Abandoned vessels have
been a major concern for us, and while we’ve been able to accomplish a great deal thanks to many businesses working with us, this funding will help us even further,” said Joanna Cloud, the group’s executive director. During the meeting, the association showed photographs of seven abandoned vessels that have been removed from the lake since the program began. Four other highrisk vessels are on the list for removal, although funding has been a challenge.
The association, which currently has more than 1,600 members, has a 2016 projected budget of $231,500. It has announced a 2016 goal of growing membership by 10 percent by next year’s
annual meeting by working with the marinas and other groups. Val Perry summed it up: “You know, if each of our members brought in one new member, think what that would mean.”

Special Master says attorneys wasting time rather than seeking settlement By Jane Harrison Special Master Ralph Lancaster skewered Georgia and Florida attorneys for apparent anemic efforts in settling a federal lawsuit over water rights. The court official chastised legal representatives for investing more energy into building the document heap than into the settling the 2013 lawsuit. Lancaster levied criticism in a March 8 teleconference after at-
torneys asked for a deadline extension to review evidence from expert witnesses. Both states are embroiled in a legal battle over water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin, on which Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir. Florida seeks a cap on Georgia’s consumption and irrigation use, plus reparations for damages it alleges Georgia caused by siphoning more than its See Lawsuit, page 56

Glades not needed, Gainesville says By Jane Harrison The City of Gainesville would rather rely directly on Lake Lanier for water supply than tap a proposed Hall County reservoir. Comments submitted by the city’s legal representative were among 57 statements sent to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about the county’s proposed 850-acre Glades Reservoir in North Hall. County plans to construct the reservoir with an estimated $166 million price tag have snared neither state nor city support and are opposed by many county residents who don’t want to foot the bill. The county has already spent $16 million on the plan officials hope would provide 40 million gallons of water a day for a growing population through 2060. State officials have said their significantly lower recent population projections for Hall County render the reservoir unnecessary. Atlanta legal firm King & Spalding submitted Gainesville’s comments Feb. 15, the deadline set by the Corps for receiving input on the Glades Draft Environmental Impact Study. “The proposed project should be reconsidered because … it will not be needed as a water supply source before 2050,” the letter said. “Any water needed by Hall County before that time can and should be supplied by Lake Lanier.” It further states that the Draft EIS indicates that siphoning water from Lanier or the proposed reservoir “makes no difference to lake levels or downstream river flows.” Additionally, the letter asserted that “Lake
Lanier is clearly the preferred alternative because it is cheaper and because it already exists.” Corps Public Affairs specialist Billy Birdwell reported the 10 topics generating the most comments were: hydrology, stream flow, reservoir levels, river basin operations, project need and purpose, updated population projections, aquatic ecology, wildlife, wetlands and cumulative effects. “The Glades EIS contractor, AECOM, is currently reviewing comments and preparing a summary of comments received. This information will be posted on the Glades EIS Website, when available,” he said. County officials have stood by their independently produced population estimates for Hall County and contend the reservoir is needed to satisfy future water demands. Commission Chairman Richard Mecum has said he would not speculate on the reservoir’s fate. The Corps expected to make a permit decision by late this year. Although Georgia Environmental Protection Division Chief Judson Turner has said Hall County doesn’t need its own reservoir, he has indicated the state is interested in it for regional water storage and would operate it differently than the county has proposed. Turner declined to comment for this story. In its letter to the Corps, the city indicated it currently does not take any position on possible reconfiguration of the reservoir plan, but would evaluate any specific proposal presented.
Warm weather signifies trout stocking time Make sure you put a trout fishing trip on your list of things to do this spring, especially since it is the time of year when trout raised in Georgia hatcheries start hitting the water. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to stock more than 80,000 trout during the last full week of March, with more than one million trout scheduled for stocking by the end of this year. “All trout waters in Georgia are now open to fishing year round, and to sweeten that news, stocking efforts are ready to begin to make your trip even more rewarding,” says John Lee Thomson, trout stocking coordinator for the Wildlife Resources Division. “One of the best opportunities for fishing success will be this spring when stream flows are high and the water is cool.” Some popular stocked streams include Cooper Creek in Union County, Wildcat Creek in Rabun County, Dicks Creek in Lumpkin County and Johns Creek in Floyd County. The daily limit is eight trout on general regulation trout waters. Anglers are reminded to respect private property rights along streams flowing through private lands and to obtain permission before fishing on private property. Anglers must possess a current Geor-
gia fishing license and a trout license to fish in designated trout waters and to fish for or possess trout. Anglers must also possess a wildlife management area license or Georgia Outdoor Recreation Pass (GORP) in order to fish on certain WMAs. Find a list of designated areas at www.georgiawildlife.com. How can you get a license? Buy it online, find a list of retail license vendors at www.georgiawildlife.com or buy it by phone at 1-800-366-2661. Purchasing a Trout Unlimited license plate supports Georgia’s trout conservation and management programs. These efforts impact trout production, stocking and stream restoration throughout north Georgia. Purchase or find out more at your county tag office. For the list of stocked trout streams, online versions the Georgia trout stream map, and other trout fishing tips, visit www.georgiawildlife.com or call (770) 535-5498.

Thanks for well wishes during hospital stay I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the prayers and well wishes following my open heart surgery last month. Recovery is going well and the new aortic valve is doing its job. I spent five days in intensive care at Emory/St. Joseph’s hospital following the procedure. On my last night in ICU it began to rain. I could not sleep and the night nurse came in to check on me. She saw I was awake and asked if I was OK. I said yes and was hoping the rain would make me sleepy. I asked her if she ever got scared up the higher floors when the big spring storms rolled in. She proceeded to tell me about the night of April 9th, 1998. I remembered that night all too well. Early that evening we saw a massive super cell drop an EF 5 tornado on Birmingham, killing 32 people. As the storm moved into the metro area a few hours later, two Cobb County police officers at Windy Hill Road got tangled up in the high winds and caught some dramatic video on their dash cams. My nurse said it was around midnight when she saw almost continuous lightning through the windows of the ICU. Doctors and nurses could feel and building begin to sway and could see the large plate glass
windows “breathing” in and out with the extreme pressure changes. Glenn Everyone was throwing Burns blankets over the windows. It was impossible Lanier to move patients very Outlook far but they did manage to move most toward the center of the building. The tornado once again began to gain more strength. Winds were howling at 150 miles per hour as it moved from Fulton into Dekalb County. St. Joseph’s was spared any major damage. As it moved into Dunwoody shortly after midnight, it devastated that community, causing $100 million in damage, killing one person. Seeing the video coming in the next morning was astounding. I was shocked even more people were not killed. People were, needless to say, in shock. It was one of the worst tornadoes to ever hit the metro area. I could not imagine how the doctors and nurses must have felt on that horrible night. The second strongest El Niño on record was in 1998. This year’s El Niño is the strongest on record and it will continue through spring. Let’s hope history does not repeat itself. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

College, youth crews compete at ‘The Hunter’ on Lake Lanier By Jane Harrison Thirty seven college and youth crews dipped oars into Lake Lanier March 19-20 in the 30th Annual John Hunter Regatta. The traditional rowing season opener, also known as “The Hunter” organized by Saint Andrews Rowing Club, expanded to a two-day format at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, where attendees made their way around unfinished construction. “It was a little bit of a challenge, but we’re excited about the changes and the positive impact for the future,” said Regatta Director Jeff Kish. After stringing power cords, getting used to exposed walls in the finish tower, and heeding various barricades on the plaza, organizers ran a by-the-clock regatta that dodged potential harsh weather. Park renovations, not as far along as originally planned, did not thwart the competition. The Roswell club imported 491 volunteers and welcomed about 50 local residents who walked on to help manage the 327-boat regatta which drew about 1,000 rowers.

The weekend format enabled several college crews to cap off their spring break training camps with competition. The University of Minnesota men’s crew stayed over for Saturday races after a week-long stay at Don Carter State Park. Other crews from Illinois, Connecticut, and New York tested regatta skills hewn in week-long practices on Lanier. After college crews checked out, high school teams checked in for Sunday’s contests. Kish said the new format brought in more college crews than usual, but fewer high schools
participated. He speculated some schools decided not take on the travel expense after storms and wind caused race cancellations the past two years. Two local crews, Riverside Military Academy and Lake Lanier Rowing Club juniors, raced on home waters Sunday. LLRC Coach Tracey Tallman put about 20 athletes on the course. “It’s a great day for them to come out and set a bench mark at the beginning of the year,” she said. “Each race, they give it all and leave whaever they have on the water.”
Dickson said the event would display the area’s diversity to athletes and spectators coming in from North, South and Central American as well as island countries. “We want to make it as diverse as possible to represent all parts of our community,” she said. GH ’96 expects at least 150 volunteers will sign on to perpetuate the reputation Gainesville has carried since the 1996 Olympics when a national television commentator labeled the community the “Hospitality Capital” of the Atlanta Games. The community rallied to welcome the world to the sprint canoe, kayak and rowing contests at the Lake Lanier venue. On the eve of the 20th anniversary, plans are heating up for a Rio on the Water celebration featuring Brazilian dancers, a Carnival-theme parade, live music, and a dinner with beer and wine. “It’s going to be super fun, super exciting,” said GH ’96 Chairperson Mimi Collins. The $100 per ticket, $1,500 per table celebration will also “leverage another round of fundraising,” Collins said. She added additional sponsors are sought not only finance to the event but also to generate
funds for the venue. Springer Mountain Farms, 811 Call Before You Dig, Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority and an anonymous donor have already committed a combined $335,000. The largest donation, $250,000, provided Springer Mountain Farms five-year naming rights to the Olympic tower. The poultry giant’s sign was expected to go up by this month. Park manager Morgan House and Collins reported that tower renovations caused some tension when rowing officials expressed concerns about electrical supply needed to run the John Hunter Regatta last month. (See related story). Tower renovation is expected to be complete by the Pan Am Games, but was not ready for the large rowing event. Crews with local contractor Carroll Daniel, Inc. had completed the bridge from the plaza to the tower’s second floor, but had not yet installed a hand rail. Additionally, interior renovations remained unfinished. Workers stopped construction as thousands of rowers converged on the site March 1821, but House said they would move “full steam ahead” to finish within six weeks.
• GH ‘96 Continued from Page 14 School students. Lake Lanier CVB President Stacy Dickson confirmed Gov. Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal, former long-time Hall County residents, plan to welcome attendees when the Pan Am Games open. The banquet, concert and dance program May 18 at Brenau University will include performances by the Gainesville Ballet, Heather Wayne’s Performing Arts Academy, and Grammy winner Mike Farris. Dickson told Gainesville-Hall ’96 directors gathered for the LLOP governing board’s meeting last month that Gainesville Jaycee and Rotary clubs volunteered to help out, as has the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary local chapter. Award medals, designed by Gainesville public relations firm Morton, Vardeman & Carlson, are being emblazoned with the Olympic Park logo and waves symbolic of Lanier. Consultants from Lakeshore Mall Belk store are tailoring uniforms aesthetically similar to the U.S. Team’s designs for volunteers to wear. Young adult students will serve as ambassadors to visiting teams and elementary school girls will present flowers to athletes on the award stage.
When a visiting pair of University of Michigan rowers flipped their boat in the chilly waters of Lake Lanier last month, a trio of workers at Lake Lanier Olympic Park sprang into action. Craig Clark, of Carroll Daniels Construction, and subcontractors Brandon Thompson and Calub Segars, were recognized as heroes by Gainesville Hall ’96 for rescuing college athletes who were unable to right their boat after it capsized on the Olympic course. LLOP Manager Morgan House reported that although one rower was able to swim to shore, the other was struggling in upper 40 degree water. Clark reported the unmanned rowing scull and Thompson and Segars plunged in for the rescue in their work clothes, saving the athletes from hyperthermia or worse. “One wasn’t going to make it,” said House, who quickly retrieved the cold, wet crew in a boat. Keeping watch: Interagency training drill fine-tunes search and rescue By Pamela A. Keene This is a training drill: When the call came that a small aircraft had crash-landed on an island on Lake Lanier, the search and rescue teams sprang into action. The all-volunteer Civil Air Patrol deployed a crew on a Cessna 182 to survey the area for a preliminary location of the plane from the air. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Flotilla 29, that serves Lake Lanier, sprung to the ready to transport soldiers from the Georgia State Defense Force across the lake to the site. “Training drills like these, when various agencies work together for a single mission, are invaluable to maximize our preparedness,” said Col. Brad Bryant with the Georgia State Defense Force, which operates under the Georgia Department of Defense. It’s a partner agency with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. “The point of these exercises is to fine-tune our communications, processes and effectiveness among all the participating organizations. As we go through each part of the training, we stop and make corrections. Then, each person and group involved will do a detailed
debriefing to help us identify areas for adjustment and improvement.” This particular drill was a year in planning, with members of the Georgia State Defense Force and the Civil Air Patrol meeting regularly to map out the scenario and determine the scope of the exercise. In all, more than 120 personnel took part in the exercise, including cadet members of the area high school chapter of the Civil Air Patrol. “Our approach in our training is to use the ‘crawl, walk, run’ scenario to assure that we are deliberate in how we respond to the situation,” Col. Bryant said. “It’s like a dress rehearsal, but there’s the necessary stop, correct and go.” Every participant was assigned a specific duty for the day: one ground team from the Civil Air Patrol was charged with locating the plane’s alert beacon by using an electric transmitter to hone in on the signal. Others searched the flight path and debris field to find victims and casualties and triage them until the medics arrived shortly afterward. “We have an old Cessna fuse-
lage that we can use in our drills, like we did recently at Camp Rainey Mountain to simulate a rough-terrain search-and-rescue mission,” Col. Bryant said. “We had placed several Rescue Randy and Rescue Annie mannequins the in woods for that drill so the soldiers could experience bringing out these 160- to 200-pound ‘casualties.’ Our purpose is to make these exercises as real as possible.” Major Don Hamrick, Civil Air Patrol incident commander for this exercise, explained the preliminaries of the day. “When we’re notified we always get the pertinent information from the pilot’s flight plan, including the number of ‘souls on board’ so that we can account for all passengers, and the projected destination. We work closely with the FAA to also – with the Georgia State Defense Force – to secure the site until the national inspectors and evaluators come in. The investigation of such an event is in their hands, but generally we’re first responders.” The weekend drill was part of the regular training for the Civil Air Patrol and the Georgia State Defense Force. volunteers. They were assisted by Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers supported the training mission. “This is the first time that these three organizations have worked together like this in
training,” Col. Bryant said. “We certainly appreciate the assistance from the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Corps of Engineers. I’m sure we will see more of these exercises to help us with our preparedness.”

Springtime brings a multitude of new activities at area lake parks By Jane Harrison Head to Lake Lanier parks this spring for yoga on the water, crappie fishing on the bank, or a movie at the beach. The shores sparkle with new activities for land-lubbers and boaters alike. Here’s a sample: • Hop in a kayak or canoe to visit five Gainesville jewels on the water. The recently completed 14-mile Gainesville Upper Lanier Water Trail, developed jointly by the Gainesville Parks & Recreation Department, avid local paddlers and river advocates, travels from the Lake Lanier Olympic Park at Clarks Bridge to Lanier Park, with stops at Holly Park and Longwood Park. For a longer journey, load up some camping gear and grub and start farther north on the Upper Chattahoochee River Water Trail. It’s like hiking, but in a boat! See garivers.org. • Go to Wahoo. For great crap-
pie fishing, take a minnow bucket to Wahoo Creek Park, newly spruced up by Hall County Parks & Leisure Services. Crews recently removed dead wood and debris that had piled up at the North Hall park to ease anglers’ access to sweet spots along shore. Folks also cast from the renovated courtesy dock near the lowriding Mountain Vernon Bridge. Chow down on a day’s catch after grilling ‘em up. The county expected to have grills and picnic tables on hand this month. • Salute the trees. A dedication ceremony for about 30 American Chestnut hybrids is planned to bless the saplings planted at Don Carter State Park. Set for National Arbor Day, April 29, the ceremony focuses on new life and hope for the majestic species that was devastated by blight in the 1900s. See www.gastateparks. org/doncarter. • It’s spring cleaning time on
Lake Lanier and its major tributary, the Chattahoochee River. Walkers, waders, paddlers and boaters can pitch in to Sweep the Hooch. Crews deploy at various locations extending from the upper Chattahoochee at Don Carter State Park to Chattahoochee Bend State Park Apr. 9. See www.chattahoochee.org. • Catch a fish from a kayak, stand up on the water, strike a pose on the lake. Gainesville Parks and Recreation plans several new events at popular Longwood Park, near town, and lovely Thompson Bridge Park, just north on Ga. 60. Combine kayaking and fishing in a May 21 “try it” session at Longwood. When the water warms up, step onto a stand up paddle board (SUP) for how-to sessions in the popular water sport in June. Got balance? Stretch it with SUP yoga classes in June and July. See www.gainesville.org/recreation.

• Get refreshment on the sand, try an aquacycle. The newest beach on the lake offers refreshments and a unique water craft. Sunbathers can hydrate and refuel at a beachside concession stand at Don Carter State Park beginning in May. Folks seeking more than a tan can hop on an aquacycle, SUP or kayak. • View a lakeside movie or concert. Big screens and stages set the scene for outdoor enter-
tainment around the lake. Recline in the sand for a movie on the beach at War Hill Park June 3, courtesy Dawson County Parks & Recreation or rock out at the Lake Show Concert at Lake Lanier Olympic Park June 4. Details to be announced: dawsoncounty.org, lakelanierolympicvenue.org.

By Jane Harrison Visitors to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks on Lake Lanier this season may notice some subtle, but nice improvements. Crews worked over the winter to get parks ready for the millions of visitors expected this spring and summer. Operations Manager Tim Rainey listed numerous maintenance projects completed, including stone veneer installations at on gatehouses at Lanier and Van Pugh North; painting of restrooms at West Bank, Van Pugh North, Bolding Mill, Old Federal, Vanns Tavern, Lanier, Sardis Creek, Thompson Creek and Lower Pool West; plus metal roofing at the Old Federal gatehouse, Thomson Creek shelter, and Van Pugh South shower house. Additionally, crews converted lighting in all recreational areas to LED and
strung new buoy lines at swimming beaches. Rainey added that renovation at Two Mile Creek Park is proceeding on schedule and will soon be complete. The Corps extended camping opportunities for the 2016 recreational season and implemented a new user fee policy. The Day Use Fee, implemented Jan. 1, requires a minimum of $5 per vehicle, $2 per pedestrian or bicycle, and $20 per bus. The Corps Day Use Annual Pass is still available however the fee has increased to $40. This pass provides for free use of all Corps operated boat ramp and swimming beach facilities at Corps lakes across the country. Also, Rainey reminds park patrons that Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, drones and quadcopters, and their operation are prohibited on or over Corps property.

Keeping it green: Pay attention to your lawn before it gets hot By now, even with the brief cold snap last month, your lawn should be greening up nicely. If you’ve got fescue, a cool-season grass, you had a nice green carpet through the winter, but as the temperatures warm, that green will most likely turn to brown by mid-summer. On the other hand, if you’ve planted warm-season grasses like Bermuda or any of the popular varieties of zoysia, your winter browns are now showing signs of green. Bermuda tends to sprout sooner than zoysia, but by the end of April, both will be well on their way to giving you a lush lawn. If you were paying attention in February, you put down a preemergent on your Bermuda or zoysia to prevent summer weeds such as crabgrass, goosegrass, dallisgrass, dandelions and even nuts edge from sprouting this summer. Doing so in early April is marginal, according to Georgia Gardener Walter Reeves, but it may be worth a try. If you didn’t put down weed preventer several months ago, you’ll be faced with using a lawnsafe post-emergent to keep these broadleaf weeds at bay. Reeves says to read all labels carefully because not all post-emergents

n MORE INFO: Email: pam@pamelakeene.com are alike. Some are formulated for use on Bermuda, others for zoysia. And be sure to mix them exactly as the label instructs; too much of a good thing can be harmful to your lawn. One of the best ways to combat weeds is to maintain a healthy lawn with proper watering, fertilization and mowing. Charlie King, who owns King Green in Hall County, offers some great tips for keeping your lawn in peak condition. Avoid overwatering. A lawn needs about one inch of water per week, preferably applied in one or two waterings, instead of a little every day. “Deep watering gets all the way down to the roots to create healthier plants,” he says. “And it’s best to water early in the morning to allow the mois-
ture on the blades to evaporate, rather than in the late evening when puddles may sit and encourage growth of fungus and disease.” Fertilization is recommended during the active growing season, but be careful with quantities. Early to mid-spring are the best times: May and August for zoysia and April, June and September for Bermuda. Applying fertilizer in really hot weather may damage grass. Pay attention to mowing heights for the healthiest warmseason grasses. Common Bermuda is best kept at one to two inches; that’s the type of grass that most homeowners in subdivisions have, because it’s frequently used by builders. If you have a hybrid Bermuda, much less common, it should be mowed to a half-inch to one-anda-half inches. Keep zoysia to between one-half and one-and-ahalf inches tall until the heat of mid-summer. Then raise your mower about a half inch to help shade the roots. Also, never cut more than one-third of the height from your lawn at one time. Another key to keeping your lawn happy is to aerate it at least every other year. “There’s no time
like the present to aerate, aerate, aerate,” says King. “You’re giving your grass a chance to absorb water better and grow stronger roots when you aerate.” Aeration actually digs thumbsized holes in your lawn using a specialized piece of equipment. It breaks up compacted soil and provides room for grass to develop new roots. Many people aerate in the spring before warmseason grasses, such as Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede, begin to green up, but King says that aeration can take place anytime during the growing season. A word About Japanese Beetles You know those black hardshelled bugs that strip your trees and shrubs bare in June? Those are Japanese beetles. Right now, they’re living as grubs in your soil, waiting for the weather to warm up so they can devour your plants. To reduce their numbers, purchase grub killer from your neighborhood nursery or box retailer and apply it according to the package instructions using a walk-behind spreader. Avoid the temptation to purchase those bright-yellow hanging-bag pheromone traps when the beetles come out this June. For one thing, the traps attract the

beetles, so any that fly by will head to your yard. Second, they’re not really necessary because the beetles will only be around for three to four weeks. If you can tolerate their destruction, your plants will recover nicely with regular watering. Resources galore If you’re internet savvy, tons of resources for gardening tips are just a click away. Make sure you’re reading about Northeast Georgia – Zone 7 – before getting too immersed in ideas. Two of the best local sites are www.walterreeves.com, which is updated regularly by gardening guru Walter Reeves and www.caes.uga.edu, managed by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. Cost-saving tips for lake homeowners ready to sell By Bev Knight If you’re thinking about selling your lake home, you’ll want to make sure your house shines against the competition; but, that can get expensive. Here are some simple, affordable tips for maximizKnight ing your home’s value without breaking the bank. Docks – The sun, water and weather can deteriorate your dock at an alarming rate. It’s always a good idea to seal the decking material to extend its useful life, because replacing those boards can cost tens of thousands. If your dock is faded, a good pressure wash may restore it. If that doesn’t work, try removing one of the boards and flipping it over. If the underside is in good shape, you can just nail it back in its original position, fresh-side-up, without having to cut a new board. Continue flipping boards until the surface looks revitalized. That may buy you a few more years of use. This works on decks, too. View – The Corps does not
allow you to cut trees or limbs to improve your view. However, they do allow you to keep your path clear including limbs that hang over the path. In addition, as long as you get their permission first, they’ll usually let you cut dead trees that could cause a safety hazard. Sometimes those two steps make all the difference in the quality of your lake view. Be sure to visit the Corps’ website for a complete list of guidelines. Landscaping – After a few years, most people let their landscaping overtake the front of their houses. In many cases, less is more. Make sure your bushes are trimmed below the window line, and add fresh ground cover in the natural areas on your property (including your lake path). For most price points, a simple landscape design is easier to maintain, therefore easier to sell. Nobody moves to the lake so they can do more yardwork! Make it neat and tidy, but it’s OK to keep it simple and natural. Old Light Fixtures – Many lake homes built in the ’80s had shiny brass fixtures. It is surprisingly easy to turn those fixtures into a more modern version.

He praised both states for signing on a mediator late last year, but expressed dismay at the lack of progress toward settlement. Dismissing an immediate ruling on extending the April 14 deadline for expert witness files, Lancaster said he was “reluctant to extend this marathon.” He accused legal teams of ignoring his earlier suggestion to pare down discovery evidence to basic, hardcore issues and instead plunging “even deeper into discovery of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of complex issues that will ultimately be left on the wayside, millions of pages of hard copies and hundreds of gigabytes of electronic files.” In the meantime, in the four months since agreeing on a mediator, states have only reported forming a basic mediation framework. “Let me suggest – and I hope I’m not being too unkindly here, that if you had invested up to 10 percent of the effort and time and expense you have used in discovery on mediation, we would not be here spinning our wheels,” he said. He then told Georgia attorney Craig Primis and Florida attorney Philip Perry he expected their April status reports to show actual
mediation progress. “Is that clear?” he asked each of them. Prior to Lancaster’s scolding, Primis and Perry sparred about Florida’s production of evidence from 20 expert witnesses. Perry said reports from “multiple nationally-recognized hydrologists, biologists, and others” would prove that reducing Georgia’s water use would increase flows on the Apalachicola River and benefit Florida’s interests in the bay, which relies on freshwater to nourish oyster beds. Primis said Georgia disagrees with Florida’s experts and that “the facts will bear out our position.” Georgia has held that Florida cannot prove the Peach State’s water use caused alleged environmental and economic harm to the Apalachicola region. Primis requested more time to review Florida’s expert reports, which he said imposed a substantial burden. He added he expected Georgia to produce more than one expert witness, which was all the state had retained by mid-March. The sole expert witness Georgia reported was Philip B. Bedient, Ph.D., P.E., an environmental engineering professor and hydrology researcher from Rice University. Lancaster declined to immediately grant an extension and suggested attorneys file briefs supporting their needs for additional time.

Wilmington, N.C., is both laid back and lively Sitting at one of the watering holes along the scenic Cape Fear River in the old downtown section of Wilmington, N.C., while watching the sun sink slowly over the battleship USS North Carolina (Battleship North Carolina) is an amazing light show! The constantly changing colors are akin to looking into the perfect cut glass of an expensive kaleidoscope! Wilmington is an eclectic city weaving a perfect tapestry of old and new that seems to have something exciting for every taste. To enjoy it all, however, you will want centrally located lodging that is comfortable for all, including pets. Only one location fits those needs perfectly – the Wilmingtonian (www.thewilmingtonian.com) which is nestled in the heart of the historic district and surrounded by restaurants and activities. This hotel allows the best access to historic, downtown Wilmington and sits among beautifully restored 19th-century homes in tree-lined neighborhoods. This section of Wilmington has the First Presbyterian Church that sports a rooster on its steeple. The rooster is a reminder of the Protestant heritage and points to the dawning of a new day. The rooster also points to Peter’s threefold denial of Christ ‘before the cock crows,’ and teaches us not to deny the Lord. The best way to learn some

history and acquire a feel of Wilmington is by taking the horse drawn tour (www.horsedrawntours.com) with a costumed driver who narrates as you ride along the riverfront and pass stately mansions of historic Wilmington using rescued horses. Springbrook Farms, Inc. has been in business in Wilmington for nearly 30 years, and has been able to save 16 percheron draft horses. Another educational tour by water is the catamaran river cruise provided by the Wilmington Water Tours (www.wilmingtonwatertours.net). A variety of scheduled cruises and customizable private charters are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings throughout the year. Choose between historic ecotours, sunset cruises or narrated tours of the scenic Cape Fear waterways. For local Wilmingtonians, the day

begins with breakfast at the Dixie Grill located in the historic district – but don’t come before 8 a.m. Delicious Southern dishes and a relaxed atmosphere entice both locals and visitors every morning. For more information, call (910) 762-7280. It would be difficult to beat the nautical setting, great cuisine and Old South atmosphere for lunch right alongside the Cape Fear River at The Pilot House Restaurant (www.pilothouserest.com). Their Shrimp and Grits entree is awesome, combining shrimp, kielbasa sausage, mushrooms, scallions, low country seasoning, over a fried grits cake with col-
lards. My suggestion for the evening meal would be the Pinpoint Restaurant (pinpointrestaurant.com) near the Dixie Grill and within walking distance of the Wilmingtonian. This modern eatery serves food deeply rooted in southern tradition. The menu changes daily and features the local bounty from Wilmington’s farmers, fisherman, oystermen and shrimpers. No trip to the Wilmington area would be complete without dipping your toes into the nearby sands and ocean waters of Carolina Beach. Anglers can also enjoy productive surf or pier fishing along the beach. Nature lovers don’t want to miss Carolina Beach Sate Park (Carolina Beach State Park) that boasts a marina and a secluded camping area with miles of hiking trails passing through a diversity of habitats. Also, one of the

world’s most unique carnivorous plants, the Venus flytrap, makes this park home, and guided trips to see these rare plants are offered. Though golf in Wilmington is not as prolific as in other areas of North Carolina, one semi-private course is well worth a try. Porters Neck Country Club (portersneckcountryclub.com) was designed by world-renowned golf architect Tom Fazio. This 4 star, 18 hole golf course opened in 1991 and has hosted the North Carolina Open, the North Carolina Amateur and the first stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. It is gorgeous throughout and has many picturesque and difficult holes. Wilmington and the beaches of North Carolina have much more than can be covered in a short article. Therefore, this topic will be continued next month with the magic of upscale Wrightsville Beach! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.
