INSIDE THIS ISSUE New format for Duck Derby Organizers have ruffled up their feathers and created a new way to have fun for the 19th annual Rubber Duck Derby & Duck Fest. This year’s event will take place on Cinco de Mayo (May 5), which is a Friday. Page 14

Columnist passes away In one of his last interviews, Roy Crittenden shared highlights of his life as a long-standing member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and an icon around Lake Lanier. Lakeside News learned just before press time for the April issue that the longtime Lakeside columnist passed away on Tuesday, March 28. He will be missed. Page 42

By Pamela A. Keene Cars were lining up by 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, for the 4 p.m. annual meeting of the Lake Lanier Association at Port Royale Marina. “We had more than 600 people register in advance for this year’s meeting – a new record,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the lake advocacy organization. “It’s the strongest response we’ve ever had and it shows that people really care about the lake and support the association.” Attendance for the annual meeting, held for the past three years at Pelican Pete’s floating restaurant at Port Royale off Browns Bridge Road, has been steadily growing, due in part to the new format. The Lanier Crappie Club provides a fish-fry supper for attendees, complete with Lake Lanier-caught crappie filets, cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni and cheese and fresh-fried hush puppies. “It something we can do to support the association,” said Dan Saknini, president of the Lanier Crappie Club, which this year caught enough fish on the lake to prepare 1,500 filets. Members of the club battered and fried the fish, along with chicken tenders

for land-lubbers, and hush puppies for the attendees. They began preparations for the evening supper early on Saturday morning, setting up a tent with portable fryers that stayed busy for most of the afternoon. Association president Wilton Rooks presented the group’s accomplishments for the past 12 months, including: • Shore Sweep – set for this year on September 23 – which collected more than 50 tons of garbage, trash and debris from the lake with the help of 1,000 volunteers and 60 boats • Adopt-a-lake – with 26 collection locations around the lake that are tested monthly • Abandoned boats and docks – which has been removing abandoned vessels for the past eight years, including a 40foot sunken houseboat in 2016 • Rip-Rap installation – to date the project has added protection to the shores of four of Lanier’s most-eroded islands for a total of 3,150 linear feet and 6,400 tons of rip-rap • Solar lights – with 252 lights installed and monitored monthly • Safety awareness – the association’s awareness campaign for

boater certification and instruction. “This has been a good year for us,” Rooks said. “We have initiated several other projects, including a business members that’s grown by 65 percent and provides 8 percent of our income.” Individual memberships represent 70 percent of the association’s

budget and grants, which grew 11 percent this past year, represent 22 percent of the group’s income. 8 LAKESIDE

April 2017

Local group holds discussion about ‘Is the Lake Water Safe?’ By Jane Harrison Pat and Charles Marr had questions about Lake Lanier’s water quality after Pat’s doctor advised her not to swim in the lake. The couple, who reside in a lakeside development off McEver Road in Gainesville, sought to find out about lake water safety at a Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Lunch-n-Learn session last month at the Hall County Library. They left with some advice from CRK Headwaters Protection Specialist Dale Caldwell. “I won’t tell you not to swim in Lake Lanier, said the environmentalist who grew up fishing and swimming in the north Georgia lake and still enjoys cooling dips on hot summer days. “But you have to keep an eye on it. Are there pollutants coming into the lake? Yes, especially after rain. Caldwell, one of two full time CRK staff members at the river watchdog’s Gainesville office, sloshes out to lake tributaries during downpours to get samples of whatever’s washing in. He has documented high levels of e-coli bacteria draining into Flat Creek, fertilizers and pesticides leaching in from farms and neighborhoods,

and silt flowing down from improperly installed sediment controls. “Don’t swim or kayak after it rains, he advised. Whether to get in the lake or not depends on each individual’s immune system, he added. In many ways, the lake and its tributaries are cleaner now than they have been, said Caldwell, whose charge is watching over the Chattahoochee River headwaters from the river’s source near Helen to Buford Dam, which holds Lake Lanier. He noted that recent CRK testing shows water quality to be “in check, owing to improved technologies and lack of rain during the current drought. Lake water meets test standards “most of the time, he said, but five test sites have been problematic in the past. The water is certainly safer than before the 1972 enforcement of the Federal Clean Water Act when area rivers actually caught on fire, he said. Newer technologies at wastewater treatment plants in Gwinnett County and Gainesville have resulted in cleaner discharges. Caldwell said he likes to think that education and efforts to work with farmers

and developers have encouraged better practices to keep pollution in check. But non-point pollution from ever-expanding development poses a bigger threat than ever. When it rains, oily residue, chemicals, bacteria, silt and trash from numerous sources run off impervious surfaces and eventually drain into the creeks and rivers that feed the lake. CRK’s crew analyzes 10 sites monthly from April to October, plus volunteers take surface samples from about 24 active sites every week. Caldwell said CRK and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division average their numbers to calculate Chlorophyll A and bacteria levels along a 70mile route. A chart shows spikes of bacteria levels after rain events, especially on Flat Creek, which forms a watery alley through the heart of Gainesville’s poultry processing sector. Caldwell said CRK considers Flat Creek one of the most polluted waterways in the state due to high levels of e-coli, which occasionally measured thousands of times greater than the safety standard. “That’s some nasty water,

Caldwell said, adding that run off from poultry processing plants “turns the water gray. A CRK investigation of two plants revealed the pollution comes not from processing chickens, but from residue from chicken trucks in the parking lots. When it rains or when the trucks are washed in the lots, the drainage seeps into Flat Creek. Caldwell said that CRK took their findings to EPA, which fined the plants and required corrective action. He reported that Pilgrim’s Pride invested $1 million to install a 70,000 gallon tank to hold water for pre-treatment. The company also hired a compliance manager who regularly attends CRK meetings. This is the type of success story CRK hopes will come with more education, Caldwell said. He noted that it took a CRK lawsuit and $2 billion in taxpayers’ money for the city of Atlanta to clean up sewage leaks. Now, when CRK records a high level of pollutants in Atlanta tributaries, “we call the city and they fix it. “In this area, you can’t just pick up the phone and have someone change (unsafe drainage practices) overnight, Caldwell

said. However he did mention a quick repair by the city of Flowery Branch when a neighborhood water-watcher found a raw sewage leak. But, overall, he believes people living in the upper Chattahoochee watershed will initiate change over time as they learn more about the public health hazard posed by pollutants washing into their creeks, rivers and lakes. He asserted that just as he’s willing to pay more for eggs from free range, organically fed chickens, there are folks who won’t blink at paying more for developers and municipalities to invest in practices to ensure their water is safe. “If we don’t step up and develop in a smart way, we’ll be forced to have regulations,â€? he said. The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides

Lake level: Down 9.7 feet Clarity: Creeks stained, main lake clear Temperature: 60s

Bass fishing Bass fishing is good. The water temperatures are really headed north with all the warm weather we have had, and the spots are loving it! We have had some great days for both numbers and size. We’ve been focusing on main and secondary clay/rock points and sandy pockets in 15 feet of water or less for the majority of recent days. A finesse worm on a Picasso Shakedown Head has been money for the majority of our catches. We are working the Shakedown Head on 8-pound test Seaguar Abrazx fluorocarbon. We believe the lighter line leads to more bites on this bait as it helps allow the baits to present more naturally. Look also for the shallower brush on points and in pockets through the day as well, as we have been finding some fish staging around this brush, again in the 15 to 18 foot range. A new swimbait from the Sweet Bait Company has worked well on some days in these areas.

The swimbait has also been good on the windblown rocky points and banks. As the sun gets up, check the shallow docks in ditches and pockets for activity. Work a jerk bait and a soft plastic swimbait beside these shallow docks, as well as a jig and worm. Lowrance down Scan technology can scan much wider areas with the narrow beams so anglers can see the bait, the structure and the fish four times better than with sonar. Find the bait and you will find the fish. These fish back in the creeks are also staging in preparation for the spawn. You will find spots and largemouth in these places. This pattern definitely works better when the sun is out as opposed to cloudy conditions. The clouds make the fish scatter and often bottom locked as well. While they still remain close to the dock, they are often not directly under the docks. They are up and moving! This report is from Jimbo’s Lake Lanier Spotted Bass Guide Service, www.jimboonlanier.com, 770 542-7764. Striper fishing Striper fishing is good. The

bite continues to be small baits on free lines and planner boards. However, the small bait bite will change as the lake continues to warm and the stripers, especially the females, begin to prepare for the spring spawn by packing on weight. The fish will begin to move into the creeks and the rivers. The bite will change to larger blueback herring and gizzard shad pulled on free lines and planner boards. Focus on flats and clay banks early morning with your planner boards as close to the bank as possible. Pull these bigger baits at 1 mph or faster. As the sun gets up in late morning move to deeper water, add a couple of split shots, slow down and focus on creek channel ledges. The Umbrella rig will also get you a reaction bite in late morning and afternoon when pulled at 3 mph. We use a 1 ounce Captain Mack’s buck tail jigs on a 3 ounce 4 arm frame Pearl or chartreuse worms or chad bodies are the preferred trailers but use your imagination. Hot pink Mr. Twister trailers was popular a couple of years ago. Look for a top water bite to develop in late April. Get out your

dicate that the spawn is in full swing, and should peak with the full moon phase. The biggest challenge this spring on Lanier has been that the water level. Our typical fishing spots for this time of year are on dry land, and we are having to discover unfamiliar spots that are now in the correct depths. The fish are scattered. Some are in the shallows, some are on docks with structures at 15 feet or less and some are anywhere in between. It is challengCrappie fishing Water temperature is about 63 ing to find those sweet spots, but once you do, it will pay off. That degrees and rising as of early is why we are always on the April. Fishing remains good to excellent. Early mornings and late move, not spending more than about 20 minutes per spot. Bobby afternoon/evenings are the best Garland and Jiffy Jigs remain our times to fish. Signs of the times: turtles are swimming and sunning “go to” jigs, and a minnow under a cork is always a good option in the backs of the creeks, the right now. You may need to take ducks and geese are laying their your allergy medicine before eggs and are on their nests, the heading out, but getting out on daffodils and tulips are in full bloom, the trees are continuing to the water right now is worth it! This report is from Dan bloom, pollen is everywhere, inSaknini, member of the Lanier cluding floating on the water. Crappie Angler’s Club, The bluegills are near the www.laniercrappieanglers.net. banks in the shallows but the most telling sign of spring is that Call Ken Sturdivant at 770 we are catching the dark colored 889-2654 or email: ken@southpurple and black male crappie near the banks. All these signs in- ernfishing.com. Red Fin, Chug Bugs and Spooks and have them ready for deployment. Spring is here and it is time for some warmer weather and hot action. There are stripers lake wide with Two Mile Creek, Bald Ridge Creek, Shoal Creek, Flat Creek and Orr Creek as good places to start your search. Florida legislators’ actions going nowhere, congressman says By Jane Harrison A U.S. Court official’s conclusion that limiting Georgia’s water use would not increase the flow into Florida did not stint the legal wrangling between the states over water in the river system shared by each. As attorneys ponder potential exceptions to Special Master Ralph Lancaster’s ruling, Florida’s congressional representatives dove into the water war. Georgia 9th District U.S. Representative Doug Collins said those congressional maneuvers don’t have legs. Collins, whose Collins district includes Lake Lanier, the largest reservoir on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system, believes Georgians need not get worked up about moves by Fla. Rep. Neal Dunn and Sen. Marco Rubio to get Congress involved. Efforts by the Floridians seeking congressional action to intercept the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ proposed water control manual for the Corps dams on the rivers face “serious opposi-

tion,” Collins said. The legislative proposals would effect water policies in other parts of the country and almost certainly would not get enough votes to pass, he said. He added he believes Dunn crafted his Congressional Review Act resolution because his district wanted him to put up a response to the Special Master’s decision and the Corps proposed water control manual. Dunn’s proposal asks Congress to halt the Corps from implementing a “flawed document” that he labeled unfair to the Apalachicola region. “The water wars need to be solved by the states,” Collins said. Rather than “being worried about shadows appearing everywhere” Georgians should bask in recent water related developments, he added, referring to the Special Master’s report and the proposed water control manual, which grants Georgia all the water it requested. Georgia has done “some really good stuff,” he said. However, the Special Master’s report did not render Georgia completely saintly. Lancaster cited evidence that Georgia al-

lowed farmers largely unrestricted irrigation on the Flint River and noted that litigation spurred conservation efforts in metropolitan Atlanta. Collins said that Ga. Gov. Nathan Deal has been pro-active with conservation measures, especially in regard to the Flint River. During the final weeks of the hearing before the Special Master, Deal initiated a task force on irrigation permits to get the house in order. The Supreme Court appointee concluded that Florida did not prove that imposing a cap on Georgia’s water use would release additional stream flow into Florida. He indicated that regardless of what Georgia does upstream, the Corps controls the volume of flow. Florida’s failure to target the Corps in its 2013 lawsuit hurt its strategy and resulted in Lancaster denying Florida’s pleas. “The Special Master made a good decision,” Collins said. He urged Lake Lanier area constituents to “focus on positive aspects” and to put their energy into removing rotting docks, abandoned vessels and conservation.

Supreme Court justices received the Special Master’s report last month, filed orders, and on March 20 gave states 45 days to file objections with supporting briefs. Justices often concur with Special Masters’ recommendations and occasionally include exceptions if states offer sufficient evidence to do so. Another round of replies and sur-replies might

follow potential objections, prolonging the fight and adding to the near $40 million price tag each state has tallied up. Some Florida river advocates have complained that money the state has invested in the lawsuit could have been better spent improving the ecological infrastructure to sustain oyster fisheries in Apalachicola Bay.

Proposed WCM “going through channels” toward finalization By Jane Harrison Neither a federal court report nor threatened congressional action is thwarting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from finalizing its plans to impose a water plan that sticks in Florida’s craw and greases Georgia’s economic gears. The Water Control Manual for the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint River Basin “is not delayed but is going through the channels” said Lisa Hunter, Corps Chief of Public Affairs, Mobile District. She added the proposed water plan is still undergoing review. No schedule has been deter-

mined for finalization or signing by the Secretary of the Army. The proposed WCM, made public in December, reaped praise from Georgia officials and provoked claims of unfairness from Floridians. It basically grants Georgia all the water it requested from the shared river system through 2030 while not promising hope for an Apalachicola region whose cries for more fresh water led the state to sue Georgia. Florida’s 2013 lawsuit targeted Georgia but not the Corps, which operates five dams on the river system as prescribed in its WCM. See WCM, page 58

Sets At Sunset to bring adult dance vibe to Olympic Park By Jane Harrison Adults only! Get ready to move your feet from noon until after sundown at a first of its kind gig on Lake Lanier April 29. The Sets at Sunset Music Festival is sure to shake Lake Lanier Olympic Park with a 21-andolder electronic dance party abuzz with techno, house and trance sets spun by popular international and Atlanta-area DJs. Producer Cody Chesneau is excited about creating an adult vibe “like a Club Miami or a mini-vacation for adults” to the lake where he’s lived 26 years. After more than 100 people flocked to a test run at his lake home near Buford Dam last year, the Atlanta DJ started looking for a bigger venue. A body of water and sunset views were prerequisite. He found it at the Olympic Park, where management has embraced a culture expansion beyond kayaks and rowing shells. “It’s directly on the water … the lake’s only 10 feet away … the cinematography is awesome,” said Chesneau. “It has the best amenities,” he added, among them electricity, running water, restrooms, parking, boat anchor

space, and a public beach with grills across the street from the main stage at the Olympic grandstands. Plus, it’s got room for the athletic dance moves – like “Running Man,” shuffles, slides, and spins – that DJs George Acosta and Mario Ochoa and their ilk stir up. Chesneau described the headliners as renowned international house legends who have electrified dance floors since the early 1990s and 2000s, respectively. Hot Atlanta-area DJs Tacayo, Ralph & Louie, Patrick Morgan and Sejva, among others, mix it up with funk, R&B, reggae, and nature-inspired tunes injected with exhilarating energy. Chesneau, whose family owns Fuel Quality Services in Flowery Branch, identifies his DJ gigs as a “side passion” outside his regular work as IT delivery director and production manager for the family business. The life-long lake dweller said he created Sets at

Sunset to fill a void in adult entertainment. “A lot of things on the lake are family oriented,” he said, adding he wanted to invite adults to come out and have fun without kids running around where they are imbibing. And yes, alcohol will be served through concessionaire Mule Camp Tavern, a Gainesville-based restaurant and rock club. Other food and drink vendors, plus merchandise peddlers, will be on site. Lake Lanier Olympic Park Manager Morgan House described the DJ dance party as an example of the venue’s diversifi-

cation from its roots as the 1996 Olympic site for rowing and paddling. “I think this is a good opportunity for us to show the venue to folks who don’t normally come there,” he said. He added it will “open doors” to others seeking LLOP’s amenities. It won’t be the first live music show there. The Rio on the Water/20th anniversary Brazilian style celebration nearly gyrated the Olympic tower last May. The third annual John Jarrard Foundation concert (performer announcement forthcoming) is slated June 3.

Chesneau expects perhaps 300 to 500 attendees in the grandstands, plus others anchoring on boats in the Olympic channel. It may not be a Disco Inferno, but adults old enough to do the hustle, bump, or funky chicken won’t be turned away. Maybe they’ll get a brand new vibe. Info: Tickets $35 advance, $45 at the gate. Time/Date: Noon-10 p.m. April 29. Location: Lake Lanier Olympic Park, 3105 Clarks Bridge Rd., Gainesville. Website: www.setsatsunset.com.

• LLA Continued from Page 2 Foundation. He commended the group for “stepping up and doing good work” through its many projects. Brad Carver, senior managing director/government affairs with Hall Booth Smith in Atlanta, was the keynote speaker. He shared his insight from years of being involved in water issues and as a life-long lakegoer.

He discussed options for ensuring the water supply for Atlanta and Georgia, including the border dispute with Tennessee, the proposal to raise the lake’s full pool level by two feet, building additional reservoirs, and the possibility of inter-basin transfers. The association announced several upcoming member so-

cials at Skogies/Gainesville Marina on Saturday, April 22, at Fish Tales/Hideaway Bay on Saturday, May 13, and at Pig Tales/Aqualand on Thursday, June 15. April 2017

A most unusual winter is now history After celebrating 35 years here at WSB-TV, I can honestly say the winter of 2016-2017 was one of the most unusual winters I have ever seen. We had a record number of 70 degree days in January, which ultimately led to a devastating tornado outbreak in Albany, Ga. February, according to the Climate Prediction Center, was the warmest since weather records began in the late 1800s! As we moved into March, I saw a massive area of high pressure build in the eastern Pacific. I knew trouble would follow. The high pressure actually originated in the south Pacific and moved toward the western U.S. As it did so, it pushed the jet stream farther north. The jet stream is a river of air that circles the globe and separates cold air from the north and warm air to the south. The greater the difference in the temperatures, the faster the jet stream winds. As we all learned in Physics 101, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. As the western U.S. jet stream was pushed north, above British Columbia, the jet stream over the eastern U.S. was forced south, all the way down to northern Florida. This allowed all the cold air that was pooling up on northern Canada to plummet southward. We here in north Georgia actually saw some of the coldest temperatures of the winter the week before spring! It could

have been worse. Here in Severe Weather Center 2, we Glenn were all looking back in Burns time at the anniversary of the Blizzard of the Lanier Century on March 13th, Outlook 1993. At the same time, pieces of atmospheric energy were beginning to flow southbound, eventually moving east toward the mid-Atlantic coast. A nor’easter was forming and was about to lock horns with the arctic air exploding into the Great Lakes and Northeast. Another major blizzard has formed on the anniversary date of our storm 24 years earlier. As it turned out, it affected more than 60 million people and dumped snow measure in feet. It turned out to be the biggest storm of the 2015-2017 for many areas of the Northeast. As we head into April, one of the driest months of the year, I think we should have a pretty decent month. We got rid of most of the pollen in February and March. We should have another brief shot of cooler air, called “Blackberry Winter” but nothing major. Above average temperatures are predicted and that is always a concern. When cold fronts arrive and encounter the warming spring temperatures here, we can and do have “weather wars.” We will watch the skies and hope you do too, BEFORE you head on the lake. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

An explanation of ‘Rubber Docking’ Final Approach. It’s a term commonly used in aviation denoting the aircraft’s descent on the last course for landing. Boats also have their own version of Final Approach. For those of you with handling experience, you already know the unique feeling as your vessel edges toward the dock. Sometimes the overall maneuver is complicated, with a lot of factors to consider: Wind, water depth, current, your speed, other nearby craft and obstructions the highest concerns in the few moments before coming to all stop, safely without incident, alongside the berth. That may sound like a simple thing to accomplish, but I can assure you that’s not always the case. Safe boat handling presents a requirement for competency to the task. I’ve witnessed my fair share of mishaps over many years. You can look at You Tube for countless examples of all types of marine accidents, both big ship and small vessel. Competency is only achieved in a very direct fashion: by simulated or actual experience. There are local professionals in your area that can help you gain the confidence and experience needed. • Safe Continued from Page 8 He pointed out that “people don’t want to be regulated,” but at some point, such as before the Clean Water Act, regulations become necessary when people don’t “step up and do the right thing.” He indicated that doing the

right thing might involve reporting dirty run-off and urging developers to invest in protecting water quality. “If you see dirt in the road (from run-off) it’s going to get into a creek. Give us a call please,” Caldwell said. The cities

and counties in the area do a “pretty good” job enforcing erosion control, he said. But it also takes individuals, like the Marrs on McEver, who volunteered to do sampling in their neighborhood, to assure the water’s safe to drink and play in.

Chartering a boat is fun but bring your wallet With Lake Lanier still under drought conditions and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get better for the boating season, maybe it’s time to go on a charter vacation. Florida, Bahamas, or the Caribbean are great destinations. There are smaller yachts (50’ to 60’) available that can accommodate up to eight people and crew. Prices vary. Florida and the Bahamas $25,000 to $40,000. Most have a chef and some have a spa with a therapist. MarineMax has some unique catamarans for charter. They also have a charter yacht ownership program where your yacht will pay for itself while under charter when you aren’t using it. Contact yacht ownership program at 866934-7232 or yacht charter vacations at 888-461-5497. Chartering is expensive but you get to cruise on your own yacht. Probably one of the most impressive charter yachts is the 279 foot ketch “Aquijo.” It’s the world’s largest high performance ketch. She cruises between 15 and 20 knots and has all the toys including a jet pack. The yacht accommodates 12 guests and has a crew of 19. The weekly base rate is about $442,000. Contact www.y.cocharterfleet. com. Schooner ‘Rambler’ When I was in my early teens I had a job as a cabin boy on the 48’ “Rambler.” Myself and another Sea Scout cleaned the boat after charter and also sanded and varnished the bright work and kept the teak decks oiled. Robbie Robinson was the captain’s name and he was a character. He was also a very accomplished portrait artist. He would get several thousand dollars for a portrait. He told me it took about 10 sittings to do a portrait to make people think they were getting their money’s worth. I asked if it really took that long. He said the portrait is done in the first sitting, the other nine sittings he touched up the backgrounds. He also had a 30’ Tahitian ketch that he let the Sea Scouts sail in races around Tampa Bay. High school waterski team My parents put me in a boarding school in 1956, St. Leo College preparatory School. I guess I was spending too much time around boats and water skiing and not enough time on school and homework. The school was located on a lake. So I convinced my parents to let me have my boat at school. There were five or six guys who knew how to ski. So we did a lot of practicing and

By Pamela A. Keene Lanier Partners is already getting ready for the 2017 Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run. Slated for July 20-22, the annual event raises money for Georgia children’s charities, including Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the Edmondson-Telford Center. “This year’s event will have an even greater focus on families,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, which has produced the event since 2010. “We want to encourage more families – both local residents and out of towners – to participate. Registration is off to a good start already and we’re anticipating another successful event this summer.” The format of the three-day event, presented by Reliable Heating and Air, remains basically the same as in previous years, with a few tweaks to make the festivities more accessible. The traditional participant “Meet and Greet” on Thursday night will take place at Coastal Breeze on Lanier Islands Parkway. Friday’s daytime event will take place with a raft-up in Cocktail Cove with a lunch and listen party, sponsored by AVC Marine. “We’ve lined up a great event with a

floating stage and food from Fish Tales and Pig Tales to bring back Cocktail Cove,” Geib said. “It’s just one of several new additions to the Poker Run that we’re introducing for 2017.” The Friday night festivities will take place at the Lanier Islands amphitheater. Poker Run registrants and those with Land Lubber tickets can enjoy barbecue from Jim N Nick’s, silent and live auctions and musical entertainment by the ever-popular North Georgia Fly Betty Band. “Fly Betty is always a crowd-pleaser, plus with all the other activities, this will be a fun party on the eve of the Poker Run,” Geib said. Saturday’s main event features an “open start” with participants beginning from anywhere on the lake. The six card stops will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except for the Gainesville Marina stop, which will close at 2 p.m. Four lunch stops are scheduled as well. Participants can play their cards at the Casino Night party on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sunset Cove. Awards will be given at 9 p.m. followed by fireworks. n MORE INFORMATION/TO REGISTER: www.lanierpartners.org

Marine artists national show comes to Gainesville’s Quinlan By Pamela A. Keene From April until early June, North Georgians can immerse themselves in the art of the sea though a national exhibit by the American Society of Marine Artists. Opening at the Quinlan visual Arts Center April 13, the ASMA show brings nearly 120 works by some of the country’s most renown marine painters, sculptors and scrimshaw artists to Gainesville. “The Quinlan Visual Arts Center is so proud to present the 17th Annual National ASMA Exhibition this April through June, so the people of the Southeast can view the works of some of the greatest contemporary marine artists in America today,” said Anne Brodie Hill, vice president of the ASMA and board member at the Quinlan. “All the other venues are maritime-related, bigname museums including the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and Mystic Seaport Museum. Pull Watersports, Holiday Harbor Boating Center join forces By Pamela A. Keene Customers will benefit from the new Pull Watersports/Holiday Harbor Boating Center and Boat Storage that opened in early April at 4700 Browns Bridge Road in Cumming. “It just made sense for our businesses to come together,” said Eric Williams, owner of Holiday Harbor Boating Sales and Storage, with a location at Allatoona Lake. “We offer two separate product lines and it will benefit our customers because we’re cutting our overhead in half.” The two businesses have gone in together on a 12-acre parcel of land on Browns Bridge to create a sales and service and boat storage on the west side of Lake Lanier. “With all the growth around Georgia 400, and with the way our business has been growing since we opened six years ago, it’s a good business decision,” said Jenny Serwitz, owner of Pull Watersports. “We will keep our retail location and pro shop at Keiths Bridge Road, less than a mile away, but we’re bringing our boat sales to Browns Bridge Road now. And we

will be moving our service facility from Bethel Road to Browns Bridge Road by the end of 2017.” The companies will share space in an existing building on the property through 2017. In 2018, they will build new facilities for sales and service, as well as adding more storage. Williams has operated Holiday Harbor Marina at Allatoona Lake for 17 years, offering sales, storage, cabin rentals, camping and a fuel dock. The location on Browns Bridge represents an expansion for the family-owned business, which formerly operated a sales facility in Dawsonville. Holiday Harbor sells Godfrey Pontoons. Jenny and Perry Serwitz opened Pull Watersports six years ago and Pull Marine three years ago, focusing on recreational watersports, wake boarding, water skiing, tubing, and wake surfing, equipment and accessories. The company is the Georgia dealer for Tige’ Boats; the dealership is moving to 4700 Browns Bridge Road. Pull Watersports was named the “Best Boat Dealer for 2017” by the Forsyth News.

Is there a good reason not to join the Lake Lanier Association?

So, what are the values of these programs to you?

Before you answer, just think about these questions:

i Protect your property values i Preserve the values that brough ht you to Lake Lanier i Create a better lake recreation experience

i If LLA had not re r moved 25 ² 40 tons of trash each year for th t e last 27 years, what would your view of Lake Lani a er look like?

i If LLA had not mon o itored lake quality for f the past 15 years, what would we know about the condition of th he lake?

:KDW¡V LPSRUWDQW WR \RX" )LVKLQJ VNLLQJ VZLPPLQJ tubing, rowing, jet skiing, family out o ings, scenic views, teaching kids and grandk kids to enjoy water sports, increasing property value es, quiet enjoyment of sunsets?

i If LLA had not pi p cked up the challeng ge of removing aband d ned boats and dereli do e ct docks, who would?

i If LLA had d not accepted the challenge of installing solar lights in the lake, who would have? ?

As the center of population and d economy of Metro Atlanta continues to move north hward, the pressures and challenges to Lak ke Lanier are going to increase. Now is no ot the time for LLA to shy away from those challenges.

i If LLA did not workk with city, ty county, ty state and federal officials on Lake Lanier issues, who would have?

i If LLA did not create a project to protect islands that are disappearing from erosion, who would have? The bottom line is that if LLA did not exist, you would probably create an organization to do what it does. But fortunately LLA has worked on these and other issues for the last 45 years as a volunteer organization.

We need your help to continue to do what we have done and to respond to th hose challenges. Help us protect what is valuable to you! Join us now as we continue to work to pr p otect your lake. Little did either of them know when they met at the cosmetic counter at Strange Pharmacy in Dublin 60 years ago where life would take them. From a drug store pharmacist to a fulfilling career with Ely Lilly & Company, Crittenden has many stories to share of Crittenden the life he and Mary Sue have shared so far. “When I retired after 33 years at

Eli Lilly, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” said Crittenden. “Then I decided I wanted to become a better boater, so I took a safe boating course. That was the beginning of my second career.” That “career” spanned 24 years with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, a volunteer job that saw him move up the ranks. He achieved the position of District 2 Commander, overseeing six flotillas in middle and north Georgia in 2005-06. He’s been the longstanding Public Affairs Officer on Lake Lanier for years and he’s even served in that capacity with the Division, District and nationally. “I’ve always enjoyed every aspect of my time with the auxiliary,” he said. “From teaching the safe boating and other classes to doing patrols on the lake, it has been so rewarding.” He recalled the time when there was no commercial towing service on Lanier. “We’d monitor the radio and go out to help people when they really needed it. At that time, the

Coast Guard and the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) pretty much did it all.” The USCGA headquarters just outside the gate at Aqualand Marine on Lights Ferry Road became, in some ways, like a second home to Crittenden. He’d report there before going on lake patrol. And he attended regular monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of every month. He and Mary Sue have many friends among the members of the auxiliary. Crittenden was born in Darien and grew up in Waynesboro, where he was a golf champion as a teenager. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy and worked at Strange Drug Company for a year before joining the U.S. Amy. After two years of service, he returned to Dublin, met Mary Sue and married eight months later. In 1960, he signed on with Eli Lilly, where he worked in sales. The couple lived for a time in Birmingham and then in Atlanta. They also spent nine months at Lilly’s home office in Indianapolis. They had two sons; Tom passed away several years ago, and Bill, a commercial airline pilot who with his wife Alicia have two sons. They live in Acworth. “Bill calls us every day, no

equipment and safety gear on board. “You know, our mission is all about boating safety and education,” he said. “I’m still so amazed when I read the statistics. Did you know that more than 80 percent of people in boating accidents have never had a safe boating course? And it’s such an easy thing to do. A one-day course is $30; that’s a small price to pay to learn boating safety. And most insurance companies will give a discount to people who have taken the course.” For many years, Crittenden has written a regular column for Lakeside on Lanier, representing the Coast Guard Auxiliary and espousing its boater education and safety courses. “My mother was an English teacher, so I guess the writing just came naturally,” he said with a smile. Recently he received another commendation from Flotilla 29: the James W. Story Memorial Trophy, recognizing his years of service. And the auxiliary has named the radio room at the Lanier headquarters after him. “Being in the Coast Guard Auxiliary has been a wonderful experience as a retired person,” he said. “To be involved in something so important. And if we Receiving a commendation from save just one life, it’s well worth Joe Edwards. it.” matter where he is,” Crittenden said. “He is so faithful to check on us.” Roy and Mary Sue also see their grandsons regularly. Crittenden’s office is filled with commendations, trophies and other recognitions from over the years. He also has photographs from his youth. It’s humbling to see how often he’s been honored, both in his career with Lilly and during his time in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. For years, he’s spent several hours each week representing the USCGA in public presentations, school talks and community events. He often manned information booths about the organization at the Atlanta Boat Show and events on Lanier. And, with his fellow auxiliary members, he’d walk the docks at the marinas conducting voluntary vessel safety checks to help ensure that boaters had the proper operating

Gainesville Garden bursting with blooms, programs By Jane Harrison The blossoms of spring are bursting open at Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Gainesville Garden. Sojourners who tread its paths seeking anything green and growing to brighten the near sunless winter will leap with glee at the colors on display at the garden as it nears its second anniversary. The 168-acre off-shoot of the Midtown Atlanta garden has filled in beautifully since opening to the public in May 2015. Its five acre initial development, with sparse plantings along a soothing waterscape, has grown into a wonderland of plants, forest paths, and programs. Also known as Smithgall Woodland Legacy Garden, it grew from the dreams of Charles and Lessie Smithgall, who donated the land to the Atlanta garden to preserve as a natural oasis, nursery for native plants, and local attraction for homeowners and visitors from afar. Last year more than 31,000 visitors walked the garden paths, hiked the woodland trails, and attended events at the garden, according to Mildred Fockele, Gainesville garden director and horticulture vice president for both gardens. She is excited about upcoming programs and exhibits,

including “Ribbit the Exhibit” that hops in April 15 with 23 original frog sculptures and children’s activities. This season’s offerings include a return of the popular Wine in the Woodlands, a once-a-month weeknight escape for wine-sipping in Gainesville’s Eden, and new programs for children, budding artists, home gardeners, and participants in the ancient Chinese exercise of Tai Chi. The Woodland Ramble, which debuted as a fall craft festival last year, emerges with a spring edition May 6, setting more artisans among the flowers. Also in May, a Mother’s Day Brunch the Saturday before the special day invites families to a unique dining celebration. Garden officials expect to soon announce the performers slated for three amphitheatre concerts in June, July and September. Fockele seems almost as thrilled with the programs and activities as she is with what she’s been putting in the ground since the garden opened. The yellow and white blossoms of 22,000 daffodils planted last fall lingered until late March. Multi-colored petals of almost 20,000 tulips, also planted last fall, were opening up.

Fockele expects a “big spring bloom” moving into this month, as azaleas, perennials and annuals show their colors. The freeze last month that nipped buds that emerged early in Georgia barely touched the Gainesville garden. “Overall, the garden here survived very well,” she said. Garden staff has also been digging along the wooded trails that skirt the curved paved walkways of the landscaped campus. A couple thousand woody plants – including oak leaf hydrangeas, azaleas, and dogwoods – went into the soil on the 1/2 mile Sourwood Trail, an original trail that PHOTO BY VICKI HOPE runs along the perimeter. Visitors Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Gainesville Garden is bursting with blooms. can merge onto the newer 1/2 mile Holly Ridge Loop and 1/3 mile Dogwood Trail for a longer hike. “The trails have been incredibly popular,” Fockele said. Eat what you grow in your back yard this year April 15. It’s more than tax day. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, it’s the last day we need to be worried about frost in north Georgia. And that’s good news for your refrigerator and your stomach. If you play your cards right, you can forsake storebought tomatoes for some real ones this summer. So, are you putting in a vegetable garden this season? Do a little research while you’re waiting for April 15 to roll around. It will set you on the way to fabulous tomatoes, beans, squash, cucumbers and all kinds of peppers and a bountiful harvest. Check out “Build a Better Vegetable Garden,” filled with DYI projects to make your gardening more successful. Written by Joyce Russell, with photos by her husband Ben, the soft-cover full-color book has loads of photos, detailed instructions and tips for growing all kinds of crops. The first part of the book describes tools and materials needed and gives practical carpentry information that will help even novices get it right. Start with raised beds, and you can put them in even before the date of the last frost. Use 1-by-8s,

Each office is independently owned and operated. Information believed accurate but not warranted.

By Pamela A. Keene Ian Brown started detailing boats at age 14 and within four years he had purchased all his equipment, a new truck, two jet skis and an ATV. But that was just the beginning for the now-23-year-old who was featured in Lakeside when he was just starting out. He has an associate’s degree in business under his belt and now buys and sells boats. He’s got a 1,000-square-foot brick-andmortar location near Charleston Park that’s surrounded by boats for sale and in various stages of being detailed. “In 2016 we sold more than 150 boats,” says the entrepreneur who employs six full- and part-time during the season. His father Ben, a former telecom executive, now works full-time for Ian, managing the crews and overseeing operations. Since 2014 he’s been mostly selling bow riders, deck boats, pontoons, cruisers and ski boats, plus some fishing and bass boats. As a high school graduate, Ian was offered several full college scholarships to institutions out of state, plus he qualified for the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships, but he had a different goal in mind. “My parents really wanted to me to do to college and I felt a little guilty not going to school so I got a 2-year degree

in business from North Georgia,” he said. “But the business was going so well, I know that’s what I wanted to do.” Ian’s become quite a boater himself, participating in the Pirates of Lanier for the past three years. in 2014 and 2015 he drove a 33-foot Baha, but now he owns at 27-foot tunnel hull boat that he ran in last year’s event. Named “Mr. Clean” – what else? – the boat sometimes sits out in front of Ian’s shop “just to get attention.” He still owns the Ford F150, but now he’s got even more equipment, including two tractors, “tons of trailers,” and just about anything else he needs to grow his boat detailing and boat sales business. “In 2016 we sold nearly $1 million in boats and I hope to at least double that in 2017,” he said. “I’ve done this all on my own, without borrowing any money. It’s what I’ve always hoped for, and it’s happened from a little bit of luck and a lot of hours.” n INFO: www.brboatdetailingga.com

Pups of all sizes can lounge in comfort and safety on the water By Pamela A. Keene Thanks to some inventive entrepreneurs on Lake Lanier, dogs of all sizes can relax in safety in and around the water. They’ve created Lazy Dog Loungers, the perfect way for pooches to enjoy the water with their owners. Created by friends Josette Fleszar, Ginger Ackerman, and Bill and Julie Graves, Lazy Dog Loungers gives dogs a leg up. Designed so that dogs can easily crawl onto the stable rectangular floats, they are available in three sizes. They’re puncture-resistant and semi-submersible. Made from UV rated materials, they’re also durable. The patent is pending on the product. “We developed the Lazy Dog Lounger because of our English Cream Golden Retriever Sebastian,” said Fleszar. “He had this habit of chewing and ripping up so many floats that we had to do something. Julie suggested the idea and we created prototypes for all our dogs.” Between them, the four own five dogs. Sebastian is the largest. Then there’s the cocker spaniel Stetson, Savannah, a Yorkie, plus the Graves’ two

Australian Shepherds Shelby and Sugar. “They all have their own loungers, and they use them all the time,” Fleszar said. Last year, the company shared a booth with another vendor at the Atlanta Boat Show. This year, they set up their own booth. “It was a really good show this year,” Fleszar said. “We really concentrated on meeting other businesses that could carry the product and now we’ve got outlets in four states: Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. We’re so glad that more stores are beginning to carry our product.” Fleszar and Ackerman own a high-tech company as well. Jigsaw provides technology for virtual corporate training to films

across the country. They also spend their time calling on potential dealers in the Southeast. “Anybody who has a dog that gets into the water needs to have a Lazy Dog Lounger,” Fleszar said. “It’s a great way for you and your dog to stay cool this summer.” Lazy Dog Loungers are carried in marinas and pet stores.

• WCM Continued from Page 12 Florida’s failure to take aim at the Corps and its proposed WCM contributed largely to its loss in court. But, the state’s federal congressional representatives are taking up the fight to halt the proposed WCM, which they label a flawed document that threatens to dry up Apalachicola’s oyster-based economy. Hunter said the Corps could not comment on the pending Congressional Review Act resolution or other legislative maneuvering by Florida officials. The Corps received letters from Florida’s U.S. Congress-

men and is responding to them, she said. Asked about the Corps’ reaction to Florida’s accusations, she responded, “The Corps used the best data and science available and followed all applicable laws, regulations and policies in developing the manual.” She added that data included research from outside agencies, such as U.S. Fish and & Wildlife Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in addition to public comments. “Under the (proposed WCM the Corps) would continue to operate the ACF as a system in

a balanced manner to achieve all the authorized project purposes,” Corps Spokesman E. Patrick Robbins said after the document’s release in December. The manual was updated for the first time since 1989. The public comment period for the WCM was extended from Jan. 14 to Feb. 1 after federal, state and interests groups requested for more time to review it. The Corps had originally predicted the WCM would be implemented in late fall 2015 when it began the updating process after years of delays from lawsuits.

Lanier Harbor Boat Storage opens

By Pamela A. Keene Lakegoers now have another choice for fine eats to go in downtown Flowery Branch. Antebellum’s Nick St. Clair and Liberty Candy Company’s Karen Ching have opened Lakeside Market in the green building on Main Street. Located across from Antebellum, the old-fashioned provisions store offers a wide variety of gourmet items and freshmade charcuteries “It’s a mix of a local market with European influences,” said Ching, who has been instrumental in the revitalization of Old Town Flowery Branch and Main Street. “We have fresh baked goods, many of Nick’s signature sauces and spreads, plus cheeses and desserts.” Ching bakes home-style breads to complement St. Clair’s green tomato chow-chow, signature pimento cheese, bacon jam and other tasty treats. Antebellum’s cookie- in-a-jar feature the restaurant’s well-known lavender shortbread, chocolate chip and sea salt with easy-to-bake instructions. Antebellum’s trademark cornbread mix is also for sale. “We offer Italian olive oils and true-aged balsamic vinegars, plus pastas, sauces and olives direct

By Pamela A. Keene Already operating several successful storage facilities in Buford, Brandon Hastings has created more options for people who want to dry-store their boats. The owner of Hidden Harbor and Little Harbor Boat and RV Storage facilities has opened Lanier Harbor Boat Storage at the corner of McEver Road and Lanier Islands Parkway. Hastings’ partner is McGowan Family LLC, managed by Frank McGowan of Flowery Branch. “We’re already half-filled and we just opened in October of last year,” Hastings said. Hastings has built 436 covered and uncovered spaces on nine acres along one of Lanier’s busiest traffic corridors. Plans are to add more storage over time. The facility also offers 24-hour security, dual-height keypads with personal access codes, LED lighting, mechanical services, boat detailing, on-site pump out, wash areas and 60-foot drive aisles. Storage is available for RVs, boats, campers and personal water craft. “We realized that most of the storage facilities on this side of the lake stay full, and we had a waiting list of more

gourmet goods and a refrigerator case of ready-to serve spreads. Lakeside Market sources and sells locally made and grown products as well. than 300 for our own facilities,” Hastings said. “It was a matter of finding the right location and partner to bring Lanier Harbor Boat Storage to reality.” Hastings has a long history in the marine business on Lanier. The Buford native visited his grandparents who lived on the lake and learned to water ski at the age of 4. In addition to owning Hidden Harbor and Little Harbor, he manages a storage facility that his grandmother owns. The name of the facility is more than a coincidence. For 10 years Hastings worked at Lanier Harbor Marina for Barkley Geib. “Before I named it, I checked with Barkley out of respect,” he said. “He taught me a lot and I loved working there. I wanted to carry on the tradition of the name.” Hastings works full time as an independent financial planner and money manager, specializing in money management and retirement planning. “We’re already adding two more covered buildings with 70 more spaces around the perimeter of the property,” he said. “Our location is key to our immediate success.”

Wine and celebrities bring sparkle to spring in Helen The Georgia hills around the Alpine village of Helen come alive with the echoes of powerfully hit golf balls and the popping of wine corks during the awakening of spring. This colorful season in the mountains kicks off with the 15th annual United Way Celebrity Golf Tournament on April 17th, 18th & 19th benefitting United Way of White County. The host hotel is the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Helen (706-878-2181), and the golf event is played at the nearby Innsbruck Golf and Country Club (www.innsbruckgolfclub.com). In the past, this tournament has given fans the opportunity to see and speak with celebrities like Bobby Cox, Bill Elliott, Darrel Chaney, Phil Niekro, and many more. Also, the fast-growing White County wine corridor makes it easy for visitors to taste a wide variety of excellent North Georgia wines during even a one day sojourn. Because of unique eateries, plenty of outdoor activities and a chance to mingle with heroes of the past, Helen and the surrounding area has become a destination that couples and families are using for unforgettable “staycations” in the springtime. Though my first memories of Helen were of fishing the Chattahoochee River in an almost abandoned village with one run-down motel, its miraculous rebirth into a scene from “The Sound of Music” has been astounding! Helen’s transformation began without much fanfare or any federal or state handouts. Quite simply, the Alpine Village idea began when several local businessmen gathered at a riverside restaurant, looked out a window, and saw their bleak hometown with its dull, dreary row of block structures. During that fateful luncheon, it was decided that

Welcome back the ‘new’ Lanierland Park

Abandoned boat removals continue

By Pamela A. Keene Forsyth County is bringing back a North Georgia classic with a new twist. The former location of Lanierland Music Park, which closed in 2006, opened in late March as Lanierland Park, a family and sports complex. The 109-acre site was purchased in 2009 by the county with plans to create a focal point for sports and recreation. Phase I of the park features four rectangular synthetic turf fields for football, soccer and lacrosse, plus picnic pavilions, a playground, concession facilities, restrooms and parking. The fields have metal stand seating. Ground was broken on the $9.2 million Phase I in midMarch of 2016. The formal ribbon cutting took place on March 27, 2017. The Tucker office of Amec Foster Wheeler designed the first phase of the park; Reeves Young of Suwanee served as contractor. The project was funded by a Parks, Recreation and Greenspace Bond that was approved by the county residents in 2008. Impact fees also provided funding for construction. These funds, and donations by a couple

of Lake Lanier businesses, helped remove the boat. “We are so grateful to Tom Child with Marine Specialties and Beau Renfroe with Renfroe Mining and Grading,” she said. “Without the support of businesses like theirs, it would be much more difficult to remove these eyesore vessels that also threaten the lake’s water quality and boater safety.” This was the first removal for 2017, Cloud said. However, the association has several other vessels on its radar. “Several big boats remain on the lake, but with the help of law enforcement and the authorities, we are pressuring the owners to take responsibility.”
