LLA expands objectives to lake safety is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene Contributing writers Phillip Sartain, Roy Crittenden, Tommy Wilkinson, Millie Adcox, Mike Rudderham, Glenn Burns, Bob & Carolyn Wilson, Lisa Beers, Jane Harrison Steve Johnson Travel Editor Bill Vanderford Lakeside is published monthly by Lanier Publishing, Inc. based in Gainesville, GA, with distribution in some 300 locations around Lake Lanier and other areas. By Jane Harrison The Lake Lanier Association is spearheading a water safety alliance of Lake Lanier stakeholders to promote proper boat operation and general water safety. The forthcoming alliance expands the core objectives of the private 4,000-member organization from Clean Lake, Full Lake to include Safe Lake. “We feel it is our responsibility to keep an eye” on safety, said LLA Executive Director Joanna Cloud. The inclusion of safety into the organization’s mission extends beyond its original focus on water quality and quantity. “It is a very natural extension of our advocacy,” Cloud said. LLA officials met with representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Lanier Islands Resort, and the Lake Lanier Convention and Visitors Bureau late last month to begin organizing the alliance. Officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, who attended a previous meeting with LLA, were not able to attend. Cloud said another meeting would be scheduled this month. Cloud said all lake stakehold-

ers, including marine supply merchants, marina managers, and recreational lake users, are invited to participate in the alliance. “The association has already spoken to a wide range of government and marine based organizations regarding participating and has seen indications of interest from many local entities,” she said The group’s short term goals would be to promote safety awareness and education for boaters and others who swim and recreate on the lake. Longer term goals would be potential changes in state legislation. “Better education would go a long way toward resolving issues,” said Cloud, referring to unsafe boating practices that have led to three fatalities on the lake since April. She added that although boating safety has received a lot of media play this summer, there are more fatalities caused each year by drowning. The alliance’s reach would extend into general water safety. The alliance’s potential could reach the state house with a possible push for state mandates requiring boater education and licensing, Cloud said.

LLA launched its safety educational campaign with full page ads about Georgia’s 100-foot law in Lake Lanier area publications. One of the most important “rules of the road” is the ‘100foot law,’ which includes all boats, not just personal watercrafts (such as Jet Skis or Sea Doos), and requires boat operators to slow to idle speed when

Introduce someone to fishing; an effort worth making Have you ever wanted to make a positive difference in someone’s life? I expect we all have. How would you like to make this sort of contribution linked to your favorite pastime? It could be a lot easier than you think. Take time to introduce someone to the great sport of fishing. Bringing in new anglers benefits people and keeps the sport healthy at a number of levels. It’s no secret that over the past several decades, the number of anglers has been in decline. There are probably several contributing factors but the fact is that people just don’t get out there with a fishing pole as much as they used to. This is documented by the decrease in fishing license sales over the years. As the baby boomer generation ages out, we’re likely to see the pool of anglers dwindle even more. Fewer anglers will equate to a drop in fishing tackle sales. One might ask why this matters to people other than tackle manufacturers and shop owners. Certain taxes apply to the tackle industry. These taxes generate many millions of dollars which directly fund fishing programs at national and state levels. Programs range from habi-

strength or athletic ability. Given its many forms, there’s something very affordable for everyone. Few Tommy sports can make these types of Wilkinson claims. It’s about having a good time Casting When introducing people to Lanier our great sport, it’s important to get them started on the right foot. Some planning and thought will tat restoration to stocking of eliminate many common stumgamefish species. Likewise, bling blocks. Even if you don’t funds generated by Georgia fish- have a great catch, a positive exing license sales are a huge factor perience will motivate them to get in providing quality angling expe- out there and have more fun on riences across the state. Some the water. When I was growing may feel that more anglers deup, we didn’t always catch a lot crease the quality of our experiof fish. Sometimes we even got ences on the water. I would argue skunked but the trips were met that the opposite is true. More with high enthusiasm and I was fishermen ultimately leads to all always more than ready for the sorts of things that pave the way next one. Having said that, for better angling experiences there’s certainly nothing wrong whether you cast for bass on with taking someone out for the reservoirs or chase trout in the first time and catching a bunch of mountains. On a personal level, fish! Whether you’re taking out a think about the satisfaction you kid or adult for a first trip, choose can get from getting someone a time when the weather will be started in a sport that can bring a pleasant. This time of year, that lifetime of enjoyment. Fishing would equate to a morning or late knows no boundaries. It’s suitable afternoon outing. Leave the midfor the young, the old, males, fe- day heat wave for the die-hards. males, and those with physical Most of us have fished (and actuchallenges. It requires no special ally enjoyed it) in adverse

weather conditions but that is something best acquired over the course of time. When taking kids fishing it’s very important to remember that catching is fun but there’s a lot more going on out there. When the fish are biting, youngsters can get pretty focused. If the fish are not biting, which can be a substantial portion of the time, kids are prone to distraction. That’s OK. Go with the flow and remember that it’s all about having a good time. Any given fishing trip can have time spent feeding ducks, collecting interesting rocks, or just about anything else you can imagine. You might even want to crank up the motor and take your wife for a sightseeing tour on a picturesque part of the lake. Perhaps you want to get your kids into fishing but you don’t have a boat. That’s no problem. Find a local park with a lake that permits fishing. There are a number of these around. These local waters are usually loaded with bluegill. These panfish are easy pickings for novice anglers. Take along some bread for tossing into the water where you want to cast. This will often bring hordes of bluegill charging in.

Simple spincasting tackle and earthworms are all that’s needed for a really good time. Watching a bobber disappear under the surface still gets me excited. Years ago, my daughter and I spent many hours doing just this at our local park. If you want to get your kids really hooked, get them small single tray tackle boxes and stock these with a few bobbers, hooks, sinkers, and two or three basic lures. When they get into it, you may be surprised at how this basic collection expands. The best recycling program If you’ve introduced a teenager or adult into the angling world and they’re excited about the sport, you can bet that they will want to own their own tackle. Your advice in this situation can make a world of difference in whether they continue fishing versus trading it off for more golf or video gaming. Spend some time shopping with them at your local tackle shop. You know what types of fishing they’ll be doing. Make sure they get the right rods, reels, line, and terminal gear. You should also assist with the selection of a tackle box and the right See Fishing, page 7

• Fishing Continued from Page 6 lures to stock it with. This can be almost as fun as shopping for your own tackle. Remember to focus on the basics and start out small. Don’t go overboard as costs can quickly add up. You don’t want anyone to be in trouble when they get home! Remember that it probably took years to accumulate the gear you use (or don’t) today. On that note, you may be in a position to simply give someone a couple of rod and reel combos. I can honestly say that I have more of these than I really need. The same applies to lures. Have someone buy their own tackle box and you can probably cull some of your duplicate lures to get them started out. I can think of no better recycling program. Today’s books and DVD technology make getting started out productively easier than it’s ever been. These are fun to read and watch. They’re sure to whet the appetite of beginning anglers. You probably have a few of these so be sure to loan them to folks you’re mentoring. If possible, get them on the water when you know a hot bite is going on. This could be the spring bass or crappie spawn when fishing is fast and easy. It could be summer trolling for stripers when deep water action is consistent and hot. If casting is part of the game plan, tie on lures that are both effective and easy to use. Smaller in-line spinners are always a good choice for action. Crankbaits and jerkbaits are excellent

choices when fish are in these strike zones. If you’re fishing from a boat, be sure to give your guest the first cast to those really fishy looking pieces of cover. Details matter Reasonable comfort goes a long way in bringing newcomers back to fish again. Don’t overlook the basics. Little things like sun screen make a big difference. This ensures a person’s predominant memory of the trip is not the really bad sun burn they nursed for a week afterward. Oh yeah, it also pays not to bring the kids home sun burned as well. It’s usually possible to plan your fishing with a reasonable distance of clean restrooms. While this is not a typical guy priority, it makes a huge difference when taking the female gender out on the water. When they ask for a stop, make it happen. Don’t say “OK, we’ll just hit one more spot that’s pretty much on the way there.” You’re not sponsoring an endurance test. This alone may determine whether your wife, teenage daughter, or significant other will be up for a repeat trip. Guys, don’t mess this up! Just as when you’re rigging your favorite lure for that perfect presentation, details matter. Be sure to take along food and beverages. No one likes to be hungry, thirsty, or both. This is an important factor when getting the kids out on the water. Everyone is in bad spirits when kids are See Fishing, page 14

Lanier Fishing Report Lake level: 1063.5 or about six and a half feet below full pool. Surface Temp: Mid-80s Clarity: Normal. Clear in main lake areas with light color in upper tributaries. Bass fishing has been good lately. Anglers are enjoying some surface schooling activity. Look for this to occur primarily early and late in the day near points and humps around creek mouths and larger main lake islands. Your favorite surface plug will draw strikes as long a it’s a shad mimicking color pattern. Smaller sizes are working best for schooling fish. When not chasing baitfish to the surface, these bass are gravitating toward deep brush. As with last month, the fish head spin has accounted for quite a few strikes when slow rolled above the brush. Rig this swimming lead head with a white pearl Super Fluke Junior. The third and strongest staple method (for artificials) has been drop shotting finesse style plastic worms into and adjacent to submerged brush piles at depths of 30 plus feet. Those with sharper drops close by will typically be the most productive. If you want to catch all the bass you can stand, catch as many spot tail shiners as possible in the shallows. Drop these deadly live baits down by the brush piles and hang on to your rod. Expect these patterns to hold up throughout the summer. Striper fishing is very good. Not much has changed since last month. Trolling bucktail jigs and dropping live bait on down rods are the two tactics of choice. If you have some key locations in mind, bait up with lively blue back herring and drop these to depths of 40 feet for starters. Position your boat over 80 to 100 feet plus of water. Focus your attention to points and underwater humps close to channels near creek mouths and the old river channel. If you are spotting fish on sonar deeper than 40 feet, don’t hesitate to drop baits down to their depth. When it comes to summer trolling, nine is the magic number. Anglers are doing well trolling one ounce bucktail jigs behind nine colors of lead core line. Successful fishermen are tipping jigs with plastic trailers as well as herring. Again, cover water near creek mouths and the old river channel. These patterns will also hold fast through summer months.

Lakeside surveyed a local boating expert and three Lake Lanier organizations for their top safety tips. The tips were compiled from responses by Steve Johnson, retired US Coast Guard, experienced ship navigator, deck officer, and USCG license instructor for Sea School, and founder of NavTeach.com; Roy Crittenden, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; Lisa Beers, Atlanta Sail & Power Squadron; and Joanna Cloud, Executive Director, Lake Lanier Association. 1) Know, and practice the 100 foot rule – keep your vessel at idle speed or less when within 100 feet of a moored, anchored or drifting boat, dock, pier bridge, person(s) in the water, shoreline adjacent to a residence, public park, beach, swimming area, restaurant or other public use area. 2) Take a boater education class; learn and abide by “Rules of the Road.” 3) Know how to operate your boat; practice boating in various weather conditions. 4) Avoid excessive speed. Safe speed depends on size and handling characteristics of the vessel, weather conditions, darkness, electronics such as depth finders, radar and GPS, traffic density, and the capability of the operator 4) Maintain a lookout. situations such as weather conditions, boat traffic, navigation, visibility, speed, day or night operations, and the general knowledge of your passengers when it comes to safety and emergencies. 5) Make sure each regular crew member knows basic boat handling and operation. There may be a time when the primary boat operator is not capable of operating the boat. 6) Never boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 7) Use correct action to avoid collision. If you make a maneuver to avoid a collision, consider the consequences that could put you in danger with other boats. 8) Have a paper chart and compass on board, know how to use them, and make sure all regular crew members on board can do basic navigation. If there is an electronic system failure, a paper chart and compass will help you get safely back to dock. 9) If there is a chance that you are going to be out at night, check your lights, have spare bulbs and fuses, tools to replace lights, flashlights and extra batteries 10) Always carry proper safety equipment: fire extinguishers, life jackets, first aid kits. - compiled by Jane Harrison

Coast Guard and its Auxiliary have important relationship So far in 2012, the Coast Guard Auxiliary represented the Coast Guard in a number of patriotic celebrations throughout the Atlanta area. We had Auxiliary vessels and crew in four parades, participated in six special services at area churches, participated in two city sponsored celebrations where representatives of the various military services were present and had a bagpiper and featured singer at the huge 4th of July Centennial Park program in downtown Atlanta. These activities typically occur during Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veteran’s Day in November. This may be a bit much for newcomers and youngsters, especially if the bite is slow. Maybe the bite has been good. LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Lake Lanier Rowing Club marks 18th year By Jane Harrison The Lake Lanier Rowing Club celebrated its 18th birthday July 14 after an annual meeting focused on upcoming events, dock conditions, and safety issues. The 60-member club grew out of the push to bring 1996 Olympic rowing and canoe/kayak events to Lake Lanier and remains dedicated to promoting rowing at the Lanier Olympic Venue. Prior to turning over leadership to new president John Ferriss, outgoing president Cliff Ward spoke of major events on the horizon: • The 2013 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship, set for May 31-June 2, will bring top collegiate crews to the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue for one of its most prestigious regattas. Thousands of athletes and spectators are expected for the championship co-hosted with Clemson University. • The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is considering the venue for a Half-Ironman Triathlon expected to draw around 3,000 athletes in late April 2013 or 2014. Ward said FCA is seeking a 3-year contract to utilize the entire boathouse facility for the two-day event. He estimated it could net revenue comparable to that generated by the John Hunter Regatta, the venue’s largest youth and collegiate regatta. Club members also discussed repair or replacement of the 16-year old docks, in use since the Olympics. “It’s just a matter of time until the docks are wasted,” said member Dave Markey, who suggested dock repair as a priority for the coming year. Markey also raised attention to safety issues, particularly motor boaters’ violations of the 100-foot rule. Georgia law makes boat operators liable for damages caused by the wake behind their boats, including disruptions to other crafts and docks.

Here's a profile and calendar for the two clubs operating at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue:

LLRC President John Ferriss serves cake to member Randy Johnson at the 18th birthday of the club.

Markey suggested that rowers keep cameras in their boats to photograph violators. Ferriss, who joined the club more than a decade ago and served as executive director/coach, hailed the venue as one of the better rowing sites in the nation. “Not everyone has it like this,” he said, pointing to the sand-bar ridden Chattahoochee River near Atlanta and shanty-like boathouses of other rowing organizations. “We are the beneficiaries (of the Olympic Venue). As a result we have a lot of responsibility to provide back to the community,” he said. Club events, Learn-to-Row sessions, and the youth program are part of giving back, he said.

LCKC excited about Hornsby’s Olympic races By Jane Harrison Members of the Lake Lanier paddling club that brought Tim Hornsby into the sport plan to get up in the pre-dawn hours Aug. 10 to see him sprint in his first Olympic race. “We’re really excited about it,” said Stanton Collins, one of several Lake Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club paddlers mentioned as potential 2016 or 2020 Olympians. Rather than going to London to watch the Games, LCKC members will tune into the action via Internet to see the Hornsby first Olympian to emerge from the club that formed around the 1996 Olympic flatwater competition on Lanier. “This club has waited for 16 years from being an Olympic venue to having a first time Olympian,” said LCKC Coach Claudiu Ciur, a member of the 2000 and 2004 Romanian Olympic teams. Ciur said he had a slight chance to attend the London Games to support Hornsby, but that he would likely remain in Gainesville to prepare his team for the USA Canoe/Kayak National Championships this month. LCKC will be defending its 10year championship in the Aug. 23-26 event in Seattle. Hornsby, fresh from his Olympic experience, is expected to race on the LCKC team. In mid-July, Hornsby was training in France prior

to flying to London to attend the Opening Ceremonies July 27. His girlfriend, pole vaulter Becky Holliday, is also a first time Olympian. Hornsby’s Olympic schedule begins Aug. 10 with men’s single kayak 200 meter heats. Each paddler runs the course twice and the best of these two scores determines the qualifiers for the semifinals. The top 15 go to the semifinals later that day. In the semifinal, each paddler runs the course once. The top 10 scorers qualify for the medal race Aug. 11. The final is one run down the course. Medal winners are calculated from the best scores. “(Hornsby) is going to come back here after the Olympics,” said Ciur, who expects the Olympian to visit schools, recruit athletes and serve as a role model for LCKC youths. “This is a huge opportunity for kids to see the real example,” he said. Adopt a lake volunteers keep eye on water quality By Jane Harrison With their eyes on the water and Secchi disks underneath it, the Lake Lanier Association’s Adopt a Lake crew keeps watch on the lake at its backdoor. Twenty-six dedicated citizen scientists regularly record water temperatures and surface conditions, gauge water clarity and fill jugs to test for algal accumulation in the state’s longest running AAL program. “With 26 sets of eyes on the lake, we get a closer view of what’s happening,” said Bev Nicholls, director of the program which started in 1999. The group began recording basic weather and surface information and expanded in 2000 to provide water clarity readings and Chlorophyll a analysis. AAL volunteers, predominately retired couples who live on or near the lake, monitor 26 stations from the northern reaches of the Chestatee and Chattahoochee rivers down to Buford Dam. Their tests help gauge the health of the lake and have been studied by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to help recommend a new water quality model for Lake Lanier. Their data present a

scientific history that Nicholls believes documents the resiliency of the sprawling manmade reservoir and a greater public awareness of how to care for it. Nicholls said AAL volunteers’ findings indicate the lake’s water quality has remained fairly constant through a decade of testing. “I haven’t seen (quality) going down. With the amount of use (the lake) gets, it’s amazing we keep it as we do,” she said. “I don’t think the lake is worse. I think it is much better,” due to increased awareness of water quality issues, she said. She attributes some of that awareness to the work of the AAL crew. “Our volunteers are unbelievable,” she said. AAL volunteer Ann Boles said that although she doesn’t think the 55-year-old lake is as pristine as it was in the 1960s, the program’s sampling indicates water quality has remained basically unchanged in the past decade. “Overall, our results are pretty consistent,” said Boles, who with husband, Bob, takes samples near the lake’s middle at Lanier Sailing Club and farther north across from Old Federal Campground.

They have toted their sampling gear to their stations nearly every month, including the “cold, terrible months,” Boles said, in a labor of love for the lake they live on. “We built our house in ’65. We enjoy the lake. We believe let’s keep it clean if we can … I think, with the results we have, more people are aware of what’s happening. It’s helped me to keep (the lake) cleaner,” she said. Nicholls combines volunteers’ monthly data to create a Lake Lanier Index, in which she arbiPHOTO BY JANE HARRISON trarily ranks water conditions Bev Nicholls lowers a Secchi disk to measure water clarity while husfrom 1 to 10, with 1 equating to a band, Dennis, records data during one of their Adopt a Lake monitorstagnant green pond and 10 a pu- ing sessions near Port Royale. rity level impossible to achieve. Adopt-A-Lake’s June lake index ·Average temperature: 77, same as May; 7 degrees cooler than June 2011. ·Secchi average: Decreased .7 feet to 6.8 feet. Section A averaged 4.9 feet with the lowest reading in the upper reaches of the Chattahoochee of only 2 feet. Section B had the highest readings with an average of 8.8 feet and the best readings of 10 feet were in the Mud Creek and Old Federal Island areas. Section C averaged 7.8 feet with the highest reading near Bald Ridge Marina of 8.8 feet. ·Chlorophyll readings: Low with only one reading above 1. That was 3 parts per billion in the Upper area of the Chatta-

hoochee that was shallow and a bit muddy from rain. ·Index: 6.5 with a slightly better chlorophyll a average and a decrease in the Secchi average. Note: Adopt-A-Lake divides Lake Lanier into three sections “A” north of Brown’s Bridge, “B” the center region south of the Bridge to a line from Six Mile Creek east to Aqualand Marina, and “C” south of this line to Buford Dam. The Lake Lanier Index is only a measure of nutrients and clarity and not of water safety. - Submitted by Bev Nicholl

Comparison to the ‘dust bowl’ days are valid July was a month for the record books. The 106 degree mark beat the old record of 105 for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Atlanta! And the July storm season came in right on schedule. We sure had some vicious storms with intense lightning, microburst winds, and some intense tropical downpours. Some areas across north Georgia last month had nearly 10 inches of very welcome rain. The Dog Days of Summer are now upon us. So what can we expect this month? The Climate Prediction Center gives us a 50/50 chance of above or below average precipitation. With a below average tropical season expected as a result of the developing El Nino, I would lean toward the below average precipitation prediction. The heat will certainly go on. The CPC prediction is for above average temperatures to continue this month. Our cooling bills will likely continue to be like a second mortgage! Speaking of the heat this summer, you’ve no doubt seen the stories on the intense heat wave across the nation’s heartland. Many cities from Texas to Iowa have seen more than 30 days of triple digit heat. I have heard people comparing this to the dust bowl days of the mid to late 1930s. I began to do some research on that. What I found was absolutely astonishing! When I looked at past global temperature data from 1936 and this year, the temperature profiles were almost identical! The maps showing temperatures in the spring of 1936 and the winter of this year looked

like the same exact map. The same for the temperature maps in the Glenn spring of 1936 and Burns 2012. By the end of this Lanier month, we should be Outlook able to see if that correlation continues. Basically, we have the same weather patterns this year as we had in 1936. This would not bode well for us, as plants need a certain amount of cold weather to produce and thrive. Insects would be out of control. Our economy could suffer yet another major hit, this time from Mother Nature. If the pattern holds like it did in the 1930s, we could see an extended period of very warm and fairly dry weather. We can only hope history does not repeat itself. In the meantime, we can continue to enjoy the lake for the remainder of the summer. It’s not at full pool but it is still in pretty good shape, thanks in part, to those persistent afternoon summers on the north end of the Lake Lanier basin. Rainfall in some areas northern Hall, Lumpkin, Dawson, Forsyth, and White counties was between 4 and 8 inches last month. Even though we see fewer afternoon storms in August, the afternoon thunderstorm machine will still crank up every day. I sure hope the locations stay the same. Try and keep cool this month, as Autumn is right around the corner. Let’s hope the historic Dust Bowl Days of the 1930s remain historic and not a prediction of what may come. Foster puppy Robert joins Coco and the sailing family Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002.4 It has been awhile since we have been parents of a newborn, but a brief encounter with our friend Judy Marshall, of Royal Potcake Rescue has changed our lives forever. We missed last year’s opportunity to assist Judy and her crew in the Bahamas during her November trip and her scheduled spay and neuter clinic as our arrival was delayed by weather. Wanting to connect with her once again, we decided to go visit her at a local PetSmart where she does adoptions on Saturdays, just to say hello. We walked into the store and there she was with this five month old Potcake she had rescued from the Abacos. “This one is for you, she said jokingly.” It turns out that Judy’s sister was caring for six potential adoptees, including the five

and an energy level we had never anticipated. In retrospect we should have Bob & invested heavily in the local pet Carolyn store. Our credit card was now on Wilson file to facilitate the expense of what became almost daily visits. Cruising Grooming, dogs treats, a crate, Wilsons puppy training books, were all on the initial list of items. The obedimonth old. We were feeling a lit- ence classes helped to set us on the right track, and after a week tle guilty for not being in the islands in November and suggested we were doing fairly well. Each day with Robert has been that we would be willing to help an adventure. We venture outside out for a few days by fostering first thing each morning, have one of the dogs. She quickly responded, “this one has your name breakfast together with Coco, and then the two of them frolic around all over it.” It turned out to be the house around the house for 30 Robert, the five month old, who had been named by the team that minutes or so, then its time for found him on the streets of Hope our morning walk. Just now Robert barked me

The dog parks are a blessing in disguise – turn ‘em loose and let them wind down a little. Robert’s social skills are among the best, with other dogs and humans. He has been a welcomed companion for Coco, who is slowly teaching the five month old the tricks of training a pair of retirees. Before you ask, we were able to get both of our canine friends aboard Sea Island Girl, and things went pretty well. Robert’s legs are a bit too short to jump on and off the boat at this point but that will come. His crate is a bit too large for the boat, so we are hoping it will no longer be required when we begin cruising again in the Fall. The dogs have become acclimated to their life jackets (www.crittersinflatable.com) which we have them wear whenever they are on the outside and are feverishly trying to train them to potty out back when we are away from land. While some of our friends

Knowing that we have rescued two wonderful dogs, most likely have saved their lives and are able to enjoy their companionship for years to come are akin to being the proud parents of a newborn. At this stage of our life, it’s certainly something to keep us active. - Until next time, Bob & Carolyn Wilson

Safe, smart and fun boating is always the priority with ASPS Summertime on Lake Lanier means fun to all the boaters, sailors, jet skiers, and park visitors who call the lake their playground and respite from the heat. The Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron feels the same, but we know that fun always needs to go hand in hand with being smart and safe while on and around the lake. Our slogan of “Safe, Smart and Fun” reminds us that boating fun is actually enhanced when we operate our vessels safely, and we continue to offer a variety of services and classes to the public to help you have a fun, smart and safe experience on the water. Everyone who operates a power boat, sailboat, or jet ski should make sure that they have the right safety equipment for their vessel and that it’s in good working order. Many boaters do not realize exactly what equipment is needed, and may not know how to check it for proper operation. We are happy to help … for free! Our Vessel Safety Checks are courtesy examinations designed to help you make sure you have the proper equipment in good working order. Our examiners are all trained

specialists and do not issue any citations. Our only goal is to assist the public with making sure your vessel is ready to operate safely and to provide recommendations and insights on how you can be a safer boater. Visit www.atlantasboatingclub.com anytime to learn more and request your free Vessel Safety Check. Education is also a key to safely operating your boat or jet ski. It’s not only good to understand the basics of boating, such as right-of-way on the water and how to safely dock, in today’s environment on our lake it’s critical to have the knowledge and confidence that good boating education provides. ASPS offers a one day “America’s Boating Course” (formerly BoatSmart) year-round. Our next session will be held on August 18 at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club in Flowery Branch. The class has a low cost of $35 for the textbook, and families may share this resource. If you have never had a boating basics class you certainly should sign up. Even boaters with years of practical experience leave surprised at how much they learned, and this course gives a solid foun-

Lisa Beers Atlanta Sail & Power Squadron dation to new boaters. Visit www.atlantasboatingclub.com to learn more and sign up. Our advanced boating courses will be starting again in September. Classes being offered this fall include Seamanship, Marine Electrical Systems, Advanced Piloting, and Navigation. Seamanship is designed for all boaters who are interested in expanding on basic boating fundamentals. Boat handling and maneuvering are covered. Knowledge and skills are increased in the areas of anchoring, emergencies, rules of the road, and marlinspike/basic knots. This is the perfect “next step” after our one day “America’s Boating Course.” Marine Electrical Systems covers boat electrical wiring practices and diagrams, direct and alternating current, galvanic and

stray current corrosion and lightning protection. Trouble shooting and practical demonstrations make this a “must” for boaters. Advanced Piloting is the second course in the USPS sequence of navigation classes. Topics include advancing a line of position – running fix, determining set and drift, and determining how tides and currents affect your course. Electronic navigating tools are

used for course determination and hazard avoidance. Navigation is the second program of celestial/offshore navigation classes. Topics include taking sextant sights of the stars, planets and moon to determine your position. Electronic software is utilized to plan and execute an offshore passage. • Adopt Continued from Page 17 laboratory in Cumming. Chlorophyll a is an indicator of nutrients in the water, usually coming from runoff, septic tanks and fertilizers. Too much Chlorophyll a can lead to scum, stench and decreased water clarity. The Index is presented in the LLA newsletter, website and Lakeside News.

Nicholls believes that knowledge and the lake’s immensity help keep it clean. She said greater awareness of how shoreline activity affects water quality has led lakeside homeowners to “be careful not to fertilize down to the edge of the lake,” and has resulted in better municipal wastewater treatment. She also

believes that chicken farms and poultry processors have improved operations to decrease run-off. She feels that Lake Lanier’s size, covering more than 39,000 acres with depths of up to 160 feet at the dam, also contributes to water quality. “The lake is very good about cleansing itself … I’m always amazed,” Nicholls said.

Secchi measures: The Secchi disk, named for its 1865 Italian creator Pietro Angelo Secchi, is used to gauge water transparency by measuring the distance at which the black and white weighted plate disappears under water. Lake Lanier Secchi readings in the past year averaged between a high of 6.8 feet in June and low of 4.9 feet in March. Volunteer monitors at various points on other Georgia lakes have reported Secchi readings lower than a foot at Lake Blackshear in Crisp County, 4 feet at Lake Allatoona in Cherokee, and as high as 26 feet at Lake Blue Ridge in Fannin. (See http://www.secchidipin.org/data/main.cfm). Chlorophyll a: Indicates levels of phosphate and nitrate. Too much Chlorophyll a can lead to an increase in algae blooms. Excess levels usually come from runoff, sewer overflows, and agricultural and residential fertilizer. The Lake Lanier Chlorophyll a analysis, expressed in parts per billion, averaged between 1 and 2 from May 2011-June 2012, with the highest of 7 recorded in May 2011 at Little River. According to Lanier AAL Director Bev Nicholls, higher levels, as much as 10 ppb, have occurred in shallower, upper regions of the lake; a reading above 5 would indicate a problem in deeper sections, where levels of less than 2 are generally reported. Poker Run results in runaway success for charities By Pamela A. Keene Records are meant to be broken and that’s just what happened with this year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run, sponsored by Lanier Partners of North Georgia. With more than 280 boats, three days of activities, a laser show and fireworks, the event raised just over $173,000. “It’s all for the kids,” said Rea Williams, president of Lanier Partners, the non-profit organization that has organized the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run for the past four years. “Every year our goal is to double the money raised from the previous year, and – thanks to our sponsors, the community and our participants – we did just that.” The festivities raised money for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Camp Sunshine and Naval Special Warfare Kids. Not only did the event exceed its fundraising goal, the Poker Run netted a huge economic impact for Lake Lanier and the community. “People came from all over the country to participate. They ate out, went to grocery stores, bought gas and spent money on lodging. Our three-day event impacted the area positively and economically for at least six days,” Williams said. Legacy Lodge at Lake Lanier Islands Resort and the Buford Comfort Inn were both sold out for the weekend; the Flowery Branch Hampton Inn accepted overflow visitors. “We were blown away by the number of people who came

to Lake Lanier who had never been here before and discovered what those of us who live and play here already know. It is simply amazing.” Starting with the Thursday night “Meet and Greet” at Gianni’s at Lake Lanier Islands, the stage was set for a memorable weekend. Williams said that a steady stream of supporters filled Gianni’s. The raft-up “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” sponsored by Norman’s Landing, drew more than 120 people to a special island cookout on Friday. The big party – the Captains’ celebration – took place on Friday night at Holiday Marina with displays of beautiful powerboats and people clamoring for tickets to enjoy the evening. Landlubber tickets at $25 each helped to raise more than $20,000 from that event alone, Williams said. More than 280 boats – from pontoons and cruisers to offshore powerboats – participated in the two-stage poker run. The smaller boats launched from various marinas; the larger boats did a long run from Buford Dam north to Gainesville. All the cash winners donated their prize money back to the children’s charities. “People really rallied for our cause – the kids,” Williams said. “We couldn’t have done it without everyone chipping in. Our sponsors went well beyond what we expected.” Reliable Heating and Air was the presenting sponsor. Other

major supporters included Lake Lanier Islands Resort, the Marine Trade Association of Metropolitan Atlanta, the RuffWood Foundation, Cox Media Group, Holiday Marina, Heritage Printing & Quick Copy and Lanier Harbor Marina. “This event was about having fun and we heard from so many people that they’d never been to a poker run that was this much fun and this well organized,” Williams said. “Our goal was a safe and fun family event and that’s just what we did. We’re still getting e-mails from people who participated saying how impressed they were and how much fun they had.” Saturday night’s party at Sunset Cove celebrated captains, crews and sponsors. It was a coveted ticket for an evening that featured the islands’ first-ever laser show followed by a fireworks spectacular. Ed Roland and the Sweet Tea Project performed on the floating stage. So how will Lanier Partners top this year’s extravaganza? Already, the date has been set, but it will not be announced for several months. Williams said that the board is planning for next year and starting to line up sponsors. “We’re so blown away by this year’s event, but next year will be even better,” Williams said. “We’re looking forward to getting started and doing all that we can to help the kids who benefit from our fundraising event on Lake Lanier.”

Lake Lanier Islands' Sunset Cove was filled with pirates for the postrace concert and fireworks.

‘Pirates’ storm Gainesville Marina during Poker Run By Jane Harrison “Arrgh! Shiver me timbers!” grunted Keith Mozena as he piloted his center console pirate ship toward the dock at Gainesville Marina. The buccaneer from the Port of Indecision on Lake Allatoona pulled up his eye patch, reached into his treasure chest and handed out booty for all: pirate rubber ducks. “These will make grown men beg,” quipped Mozena, who shoved off minutes ahead of the “big boys” buzzing up the lake behind him. Another team of pirates sneaked in ahead of the parade of cigarette boats that would soon fill the cove. Michael Nunn, from Cumming not Pittsburgh, wielded a baseball bat, his first mate donned a catcher’s chest protector, and all men on board sported fake mustaches and yellow baseball jerseys. “We thought we’d go for originality,” said Nunn, underneath paper baseballs hung from the bimini top. Wincing after a swig of Iron City brew, he headed for home before thunder struck the water. Soon the roar of 1,000-plus horsepower engines blasted the marina. A helicopter hovered overhead as a flotilla of 48-foot speed boats idled every which way in wait for their draw. John Woodruff, from Coca Cola’s founding family, edged his famous Windship in for a card pick. His fist mate, clad in denim shorts and Coca Cola red, black and sil-

ver to match the boat, chose a card from the pirate hat and they were off … later to be seen showing off the power of 1,350 horses for his gathering entourage. His powered-up cadre came in boat-after-gorgeous-boat, long hulls glistening under threatening skies. “It’s pretty cool … and pretty crazy right now,” said a poker run first timer from Maryland as she stood atop the bow for her luck of the draw. “This lake is awesome! It’s rough out there,” said a Kentucky captain, gesturing two-foot waves with his hands. The fleet embarked from a rainy start at the south end of the lake to cruise to calmer water on the “north end of the north end.” But, that was soon to end as thunder above seemed to echo that below. “It was a fun ride up here! There was spray everywhere,” said a three-time poker run veteran on the Fueling Misbehavior from South Carolina. His draw of the Ace of Spades kept spirits high. Local boater Rodney Casey pulled up to the dock after most of the “big boys” left him in their wake. “It’s great. This sport is a little crazy,” said the four-time poker run player. “I know all of ‘em, everyone who puts it on,” he added. That’s what brings him back, he said. Asked if he’d drawn any good cards, he laughed, “Not yet … that’s why I told somebody else to pick this time.”

LANIER PRESSURE WASHING & DECK SEALING

By Jane Harrison Fatal boating accidents on Lake Lanier since April have pushed some customers at one area boating supply store toward outlandish and risky methods to increase their visibility on the lake. Requests for bright lights and flags for towable tubes have West Marine manager Scott Sears pleading for people to calm down and concentrate on safe boat operation. “On average, one customer a day comes in wanting strobe lights or spotlights in order to be seen by everyone out there,” said the manager of the marine supply store on Lanier Islands Parkway. Such illumination is not only illegal, Sears said, but unsafe, as the bright glare can obscure navigation lights and blind the operator of the boat. “Some people are not thinking this through. It’s a knee jerk reaction to the accidents and is making it more dangerous. That bothers me,” he said. He reported several requests for flags to attach to tubes pulled behind boats. “This is ludicrous. It could impale someone,” he said. “We need to figure out what we can do collectively and as individuals to calm people down,” Sears said. Rather than outfitting boats and tubes with risky, illegal accessories, lake goers need to focus on safe boating. “The accidents that have happened recently have one common denominator: the

vessel was operated (allegedly) improperly … at least one thing was not being done in a safe manner,” he said. “I want folks to calm down and operate their boats in a proper way.” Jenny Serwitz, owner of Pull Watersports in Cumming, said she thinks recent accidents have increased safety awareness but that she’s not had customers seeking unusual means to be seen on the lake. She said the store’s location, off Ga. 400 on Keith’s Bridge Road near small lake parks, puts it in a family-oriented environment with less boat traffic than the southern part of the lake. Both Serwitz and Sears reported steady sales of towable tubes, wake boards and other recreational equipment despite the scare generated by the accidents. And, they have seen an increase in demand for traditional safety supplies, such as life jackets, throwable cushions, fire extinguishers and legal lights. “Our safety department is up two figures,” said Sears, who has also experienced more requests for personal locator systems that use GPS coordinates to signal for help if a person falls overboard. Serwitz said sales of 110-decibel air horns that attach to boat dash boards have been up. Both hailed Lake Lanier as a prime recreation destination that draws millions annually for fun and sport. “It’s a wonderSee Safety, page 59

Obstacles, rope bridges, grape stomping and more By Jane Harrison Civilians can get down and dirty, up and over, wet and sweaty with military Special Forces Aug. 18 at the Special Ops Warrior Challenge 5K/10K Obstacle Run at Lake Lanier Islands Resort. “I don’t want to give all the secrets out,” said organizer Bill Stevens, but he hinted the course throws some punches with an 8foot wall, mud crawl, sand bag carry, and tromp through knee deep water. “It’s not Navy SEAL,” he said, but might be deemed “mildly challenging” by SEAL standards. As of late July, about 200 people had registered to compete as individuals or in 4- or 5-person teams. Stevens said crews from the Marine, Army and Ranger special operation forces will be among the competitors. The majority of entrants are women between ages 26 and 40. Stevens expects to see fierce competition as the ladies battle against a team of Ranger wives whom he predicted “will probably out-do all of them,” including the men. The action will take place at the very end of the island on the former golf course of the old PineIsle hotel. The sand trap will

deal a new twist of frustration as racers attempt to cross a rope bridge. At about eight inches above the sand, no one’s going to get buried if they don’t make it. The event is a fundraiser for Operation One Voice, a local nonprofit organization Stevens founded to help wounded soldiers and the families of the fallen. Stevens, an 18-year law enforcement veteran and lieutenant with the Duluth Police Department, started Operation One Voice after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. “I was challenged by a federal agent to do something for the troops,” said Stevens, who felt the call despite no having personal military experience. “I’m proud that 97 cents out of every dollar we raise goes back” to the soldiers or their families, he said. His records show Operation One Voice has raised more than $34,000 and has helped 2,834 military families. The organization has purchased bicycles used by wounded soldiers in rehabilitation and provides car rentals for soldiers’ spouses to commute to medical facilities. He plans to follow up the Au-

gust event with a Warrior Ride Sept. 8. The 22-mile bicycle ride from Duluth City Hall to Lake Lanier Islands invites riders to join Stevens and a crew of 24 cyclists in their final leg of a 386mile bike trip from Little Creek, Va. to the finish line at the Islands. Info: www.operationonevoice.org, 404 713-0103 Run the vineyard, stomp some grapes What better way to celebrate grape harvest than running through a vineyard and then burying your feet in a tub of grapes? And, oh yes, sipping the fruit of the vine at the foot of a stone faced mountain. The Sept. 1 Crush Fest at Yonah Mountain Vineyard fetes this season’s harvest with a new way to move your feet. Before the grape stomping begins, runners will traipse through the vineyard in two cross country races. The challenging Crusher 6K tours 200 hilly acres of vines, runs into the woods, and finishes on a summit. More leisurely participants might

prefer a slower jaunt in the mostly flat Trellis 2K. Race organizer Eric Miller hopes the races will introduce North Georgia wine country to an Atlanta-area demographic that has yet to discover the region’s vineyards. “We’re capping the race at 1,000,” he said, adding he’d be happy if the inaugural races draw 500. Miller believes the cross country course among the trellises is unique. “No one has actually put on a race that is in the actual vineyard, not in the road next to a vineyard,” he said. After the races, festival attendees begin the next round of exertions: grape stomping, wagon rides, and browsing for homemade crafts. Music, food and wine tastings are on also on tap. race, which benefits Adventure Amputee Camp, takes place entirely in the park where the paved course allows scenic views of Lake Lanier. “It’s pretty flat, great for beginners. The whole way is very scenic,” said Lowell Starr, race director. 5K participants will loop the park three times. The fun run follows a one-lap course. Amplified recorded music at the start/finish line will lend an extra energy boost each lap. Starr expects between 150-200 participants for the inaugural race. The evening start time provides a different perspective, allowing racers to watch the sunset as they cool down. Proceeds from the race go to support an annual amputee camp for children at Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, N.C. The Amputee Adventure Camp provides outdoor learning experiences for boys and girls missing one or more limbs. Children explore skiing, bicycling, rope climbing, tennis and other activities with adaptive equipment. See www.adventureamputeecamp.org. The other 80 percent of his time is spent being proactive in the park. food,” he said. “I’m self taught, and I love learning about and trying new foods.” It’s evident that Williams brings his love of food to the Islands. In early June, the Dog ‘n Draft at Sunset Cove began serving breakfast on weekends – but not just any breakfast. “The first weekend we had biscuits, donuts, fresh-egg omelets and hash browns,” Williams said. “While that’s great – and we’re just about the only restaurant on the lake that serves breakfast – I wanted to kick it up a notch, so I’ve suggested adding shrimp, lobster and other items to make the omelets special. Again, it’s all about differentiation. I want to push our experts’ envelopes.” Community commitment Beyond the resort, Williams is active in the community. He’s initiated weekly podcasts at www.lakelaniermatters.com, with a group of regulars that includes Stacey Dickson of the Lake

Lanier Convention and Visitors Bureau and Lakeside News Publisher Alan Hope. The podcasts take place at area businesses and other locations. “A rising tide floats all boats,” he said of his philosophy of promoting Lanier and surrounding businesses. “It’s a great way to let people know about all there is to do on and around this great lake.” He also volunteers his time on Sundays at John’s Creek Baptist church as a greeter, and his family stays active as members of the church. Williams’ community service and his dedication to his guests continue to enhance and build on the strong legacy that exists at the resort. “What’s happening here at Lake Lanier is about more than the resort,” he said. “Our family’s goal is to leave a legacy for years to come that people can enjoy with their families and make plenty of Lake Lanier memories. For me, if one of us is successful, we all benefit.”

Interagency cooperation enhances safety at lake It takes many hands to keep Lake Lanier safe. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, charged with managing the 39,000-acre lake and its 640 miles of shoreline, works cooperatively with a number of local, state and federal agencies throughout the year. Interagency cooperation and communications are especially crucial during times of emergency. Additionally, large public events require detailed coordination with various agencies to address public safety, protection of public property, and management of limited resources. Examples of specific interagency cooperation include: The Corps has coordinated and facilitated the Lake Lanier Water Safety Task Force since the 1990s. The task force is made up of various partners including law enforcement agencies, first responders, natural resource agencies, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Safe Kids, state and federal agencies, volunteers, and other advocates of water safety.

Nicholas Baggett US Army Corps of Engineers

The U.S. Geological Survey is partnering with the Corps to determine flow rates during water releases from Buford Dam. Gwinnett County and Forsyth County fire departments have specially trained whitewater rescue teams that respond to emergencies that occur below Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River. Hall County Fire “Marine One” Fire Paramedics respond to boat accidents and medical emergencies on the lake. The Georgia DNR Law Enforcement rangers, Forsyth County Sheriff’s and Hall County Sheriff’s marine units ensure safe boating. These marine patrol units work hand in hand with the Corps in emergencies and in the after-

math of fatal boat accidents. The various fire agencies that surround Lake Lanier are the primary medical responders to medical emergencies. These agencies respond to a range of calls from twisted ankles to trauma cases that require victims to be transported by land or by air. The Corps works closely with the sheriff’s departments, Gwinnett County police, and National Park rangers, who provide response to law enforcement emergencies and backup for Corps’ park rangers at Lake Lanier. Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department is patrolling Corps parks on the south end of Lanier via vehicles, boat, bicycles and horseback. This has helped increase public safety for both the citizens of Forsyth County and visitors to the area. Their work has helped deter serious law enforcement incidents at various recreation areas within Forsyth County. Intera-

Know the rules before you go boating Safely operating your boat is a never-ending stream of choices of action to consider and apply with your goal to always make … the right ones. Passengers, crew, and fellow mariners depend on your knowledge and understanding of many things, especially when it comes to collision avoidance. One of the substantial and frequent factors in marine incidents is excessive speed for the situation and the lack of control caused by that condition. All things considered, effectively maneuvering, especially stopping in an appropriate distance to avoid collision is always the objective. It is so vital, the navigation Rules of the Road have chapters dedicated to those important requirements. Rules 6 through 8 which encompass Safe Speed and Collision Avoidance direct the methods of which to best accomplish that. If you do not fully recognize the circumstance you are in with another vessel then you need to reduce speed or even back all the way off to avoid a dangerous situation. One part of this crucial understanding is that you, the operator, have the obligation to take proper action if you feel the actions by the give way vessel are not adequate or ample enough to avoid the threat. Discovering the natural beauty and lifestyle of forgotten Florida Fast flowing black water meandering through tall stands of ancient cypress trees has a soothing effect on all who paddle or float the gorgeous Santa Fe River in North Florida. Add to that otters, turtles, wading birds, ducks, ospreys, turkeys, unique geology, Naked Ed, the historical town of High Springs, and you have one of the most picturesque and unusual rivers in Florida. This special waterway that has its beginning in the Santa Fe Lakes at the northeast corner of Alachua County continues down through the Santa Fe Swamp until it goes underground for nearly three miles near the O’Leno State Park. When it emerges again, the Santa Fe River is usually 75 to 100 feet wide in most places, and because of its natural beauty, has been designated as part of the Florida Paddling Trail. Dozens of natural springs feed the river throughout its length, and many of these become meccas for weekend and holiday crowds with all manner of floats, tubes, and other watercraft. The younger folks can also be seen jumping from overhanging trees and docks in these areas. Most of the river, however, is a quiet, scenic float trip, which can be greatly enhanced by hiring the services of Lars Andersen of Adventure Outpost by calling: 386454-0611 or visiting:

No trip to the Santa Fe would be complete without a visit to see Ed who is famous along the river and has lived in his little hut for nearly 20 years ... mostly without clothes. He is a very nice person, however, and will slip on a tiny loin cloth when visitors appear. The locals have even named a beer after him! The Santa Fe River runs through the old town of High Springs which is home to the B&B voted the best in Florida and one of the top 15 in the nation. This unique lodging place is the Grady House B&B owned and operated by Lucie and Paul Regensdorf. Staying with them is much more than having a place for the night and something to eat

in the morning ... it is a total experience! Lucie is both an excellent hostess and chef and has put her personal touch on every inch of the decor throughout this classy inn. Observant visitors can spend hours looking throughout this immaculate property. Something is always available to drink or nibble while enjoying the subtle details of the house, maybe sitting in the jasmine covered gazebo listening to the waterfalls, then watching the colorful koi in the water garden. The topper, however, is Lucie’s tantalizing breakfast that will challenge your taste buds to the limit. People are drawn from all over the globe to spend a night in this fabulous location, so reservations are needed. To make these, contact the Grady House by email at: info@gradyhouse.com or call: 386-454-2206. Old plantations, historic homes, and natural beauty are synonymous with the forgotten town of Monticello in North Florida’s Panhandle. This area contains much of the more than 100,000 acres of forest, swamp, lakes, and rivers know as the Flat Woods. As far back as the time of the Paleo Indians, men have hunted, trapped, and fished in this prehistoric environment. In my visit to the Flat Woods, I was fortunate enough to be guided by local outdoorsman and TV host of the “Outdoorsman’s Table,” Charlie Ward and his brother David. We also had the opportunity to catch bass and observe natural beauty in one of the pristine lakes near Monticello. Historical lodging in Monti-

Clarke, who became a judge and later president of the Florida Senate, was the last Clarke to inhabit the house. Many historical photos and artifacts can be viewed in and around this unique inn. For more information, check www.averaclarke.com. For those seeking a more rustic experience in a fabulous natural setting, I would suggest a stay at Suwannee River Rendezvous Resort and Campground www.suwanneeriverrendezvous.c om at Convict Springs along the upper Suwannee River. This old stop along the river has been completely revitalized and will soon become one of the best places in Florida for RVs and campers thanks to the efforts of new owners, Frank and Susie

Page. In fact, the food from Grandma Susie’s Cookin’ Shack is already keeping visitors coming back for more! The historical Convict Spring and the gorgeous and fertile Suwannee River are a major draw to this place. The spring, named in the early 1900s as a camp for chain gang prisoners working on road projects in the area, is fed from an underground cave system connected to the Florida aquifer. The water in the spring is always crystal clear and flows at a constant temperature of 70.5 degrees throughout the year. Though the underground passages in the spring are very narrow, experienced divers have explored them all. The Suwannee River in this area is quite scenic and offers great kayaking and canoeing as well as good fishing. Wildlife is abundant, and this is one of the best parts of the river to see the See Travel, page 63

Coast Guard Auxiliary adds new safety initiatives By Jane Harrison Improved communication with local law enforcement and dissemination of safe boating materials at area marinas are two initiatives U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary 29 plans to add to its safety offerings on Lake Lanier. Members of the near 100strong organization tasked by the Coast Guard to promote recreational boating safety on Lake Lanier discussed new methods to safeguard the lake at its July meeting. Held less than a month after two boating accidents caused two deaths and one serious injury, the meeting focused on increasing the unit’s slate of safety activities. The organization’s security assistance during the search for the body of Griffin Prince, killed along with his brother, Jake, in a July accident on Lanier, forged a closer connection with the Hall County Sheriff’s Department, according to Flotilla officials. “We have a new, good relationship with law enforcement on this lake. They see us as an equal public safety entity,” said Flotilla Marine Safety Chairman Jim Beckemeyer.

Operations Chairperson Don Hunt reported that bond would be strengthened in late July or early August when the Flotilla expected the county to provide a digital radio to connect directly with authorities and emergency services. “We are now in the game with this radio, plugged directly into Hall County,” Hunt said. “This technology gives us tremendous ability to communicate and coordinate” emergency efforts, he said. It is expected to streamline communications beyond the limited range and effectiveness of marine radio. Hunt said the digital radio would be given to a Flotilla member who lives near the lake and would be available to coordinate with the emergency commander and mobilize members to help. Flotilla Member Training Chairman Bruce Lindsey suggested that providing “Rules of the Road” decals and safety signs for boat ramps would better educate boaters on avoiding accidents. He said dissemination of safe boating materials arose during a July meeting at Lake Lanier Islands with officials from the Department of Natural Resources,

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Hall County enforcement. He proposed decals showing rules regarding navigational lights and horn signals be provided for boaters to affix to their dashboards. It was also suggested that signs listing safe boating practices be posted at marinas and that safety brochures be given out at marina guard shacks and fuel docks. These initiatives would add to the Flotilla’s safety emphasis, which already includes safe boating classes, vessel inspections, and weekend watch stands. The Auxiliary offers one class a month from February to October and plans to coordinate a public education program with Singleton Marine. Flotilla members perform vessel safety checks at area marinas and parks twice monthly MayAug. Weekends from mid-Maymid-September, Flotilla members stand watch from noon to 8 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to respond to calls on the marine radio at the Operations Center just outside Aqualand Marina. The unit also deploys a boat during watch hours to help lake-

goers in trouble, whether they run out of fuel, have engine trouble, run aground, or need help in an emergency. “We do everything the Coast Guard does, except law

enforcement,” said Public Affairs Officer Roy Crittenden. He added that when boaters see the big Coast Guard emblem on their craft, they become more careful.

August 2012

Time to take the RV and my bag of rocks off the road I was in the study at the time, considering whether to forget about the yard and take a nap, or to just forget about the yard period. Suddenly, my wife appeared with a serious look on her face. I braced myself. She said “It’s time.” Caught totally off guard as usual, I immediately assumed that she was talking about me not taking out the garbage. In an attempt to reassure her, and to keep the nap in play, I told her, “Are your sure? It’s only been a couple of weeks since I last took it out.” Ignoring me, she proceeded to announce that it was time to sell the motor home parked outside our house like a panting pubescent Greyhound bus. “Why is that?”I tentatively asked. And from that inquiry, she laid out the truth of the matter. “Well, it’s been a while since we took that trip to Santa Fe, and the girls just aren’t all that keen to go on any more trips.” Sensing that she might be right, I thought back to our first trip as a family in 2003. I still have the scars. It was, in theory, going to be great fun. But I was

pretty much naive as to the volatility of three daughters in tight quarters humping it all the way out West and back. The bickering actually began as we were pulling out of the driveway, and never really let up for the next 3,000 miles. In fact, the only time when they were not fighting or fussing was when they were sleeping. From that point forward, I learned to keep a bag of rocks handy when embarking on an expedition. And I would announce my intentions before I cranked up the beast. “Girls, you see these rocks? I’m not afraid to use them.” And then, just to make sure that they understood my unique brand of crowd control, I would point out that, “I’m not afraid to

go to jail, I could use the break.” Intruding on my recollection, my wife continued, “With Callie going off to college, there’s not much chance that we will be able to go with just the other two. And you know what I mean.” I understood what she was saying. Believe it or not, the intensity of the fighting is actually greater the fewer the daughters involved. And there are just not enough rocks in our yard to cover the whole trip. All things considered, it’s always been interesting. On the outskirts of Boston, I took a wrong turn and ended up on a toll road with half the state of Massachusetts apparently burning off an espresso buzz by driving 95 miles an hour on an elevated roadway that might as well have been a trampoline. One year later, it took us a lifetime to get to Key West, Florida, as we sat on I-75 a total nine hours due to various auto accidents. Being in a motor home with food and a bathroom made us the most popular people in the jam. And we made a monumentally

long slog through the hinterlands of upstate Michigan. It was so far up there, and so long getting there, that for three days, I was convinced that I could see Sarah Palin’s house and just the faintest outlines of Russia. In Quebec City, Canada, the only space at the luxurious Frontenac Hotel that would accommodate our big honking bus for a short stay was right slap dab at the front door, along with the Jaguars, Mercedes, and Bentleys. Surprisingly, no one offered us any Grey Poupon. Perhaps the best remembered trip found me pulling into a de-

serted asphalt campground in the absolute middle of nowhere in southeast Texas at three o’clock in the morning, only to wake up still in the absolute middle of nowhere, but with a flat tire and no spare. Oddly enough, it’s all been a lot of fun. And if anyone with three daughters is interested, let me know. I’ll throw in the bag of rocks for free. When you have a few extra minutes at your computer, be sure to check out a series of boating “how to” videos provided by the United States Power Squadron, available on our website. Visit www.atlantasboatingclub.com and click “Boating Education Videos” in the menu to access short videos on quick stopping a power boat, docking, knowing your vessel’s actual capacity, what to do during a capsize, and many more topics. So what about the fun? Every month during the spring, summer and fall the ASPS holds a raft-up in various locations around the lake. Most raft-ups have themes and some feature opportunities for water sports and other water based activities. In August we’ll have our own

version of the Olympics with crazy races and friendly competitions. Visit our website and contact us if you’d like to join us at a raft-up. We also hold monthly General Membership Meetings which feature speakers on a variety of boating topics. We also offer unique boating trips, such as our Erie Canal Trip that will take place between August 6 and 11. We’ll be riding jet skis and pontoon boats for 344 miles, through 34 locks along the Erie Canal. The trip will end at Tonawanda, NY, just entering the Niagara River. We should be able to see the mist rising from Niagara Falls. What an experience that will be! See you on the lake! ASPS members have access to advanced boating classes, social events on and off the water year round, fun and informative monthly membership meetings, and more.

By Pamela A. Keene A 70-mile motorcycle ride around Lake Lanier will raise funds for the family of Griffin and Jake Prince on Saturday, August 11. Beginning in Dahlonega and ending up in downtown Dawsonville, the ride is being planned by the Dawson County Sheriff’s office. “We want to do something special for the family and this is just one way we can help,” said Lt. Doug Boyle with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office. “To help get the word out, we’ve involved the Sheriff’s offices from Hall, Forsyth and Lumpkin as well.” Registration takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Dahlonega County Courthouse on the morning of the ride, with kickstands up at 11:15 for the clockwise ride to Gainesville, across Buford Dam, through Cumming and ending in Dawsonville. Event honors Griffin and Jake Prince By Pamela A. Keene Griffin and Jake Prince’s memories will be honored by their aunts in early August. The three women regularly sell children’s clothes at WeeCycle Consignment on Spout Springs Road. The store will be collecting dog and cat items and funds August 1-5. The donations will benefit the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia and Jaildogs. Any cash donations will be given to the K-9 unit – and dogs Penny and Bella – who were instrumental in recovering Griffin. “When the boys’ aunts told us about what had happened, we decided to do something special for

the two boys,” said Ashley Rubin, who owns WeeCycle with Tysh Roberts. “They told me that Griffin and Jake loved animals, so that’s how we decided to do this event.” Not only are the organizers looking for funds, they’re also seeking a number of items, including canned and dry dog and cat food, kitty litter, leashes, dog toys and cleaning items. A complete list is on the website at www.weecycleconsignment.com. The store is located at 7380 Spout Springs Rd. in Flowery Branch.
