INSIDE THIS ISSUE ACRA comments accepted The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is considering public comments about a national collegiate rowing regatta prior to rendering a final decision about its future on Lake Lanier. Page 14

Corps water control manual may be released by fall is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene Contributing writers Jane Harrison, Millie Adcox Columnists Glenn Burns, Roy Crittenden, Steve Johnson, Mike Rudderham, Ken Sturdivant, Bob & Carolyn Wilson Travel Editor Bill Vanderford Lakeside is published monthly by Lanier Publishing, Inc. based in Gainesville, GA, with distribution in some 300 locations around Lake Lanier and other areas. Opinions expressed by contributing writers are not necessarily those of Lakeside, its staff or its advertisers. Manuscripts and photographs submitted will be considered for publication. Lakeside cannot be held responsible for such materials in case of damage or loss.

By Jane Harrison An updated water control plan for operations of Buford Dam and Lake Lanier is expected to be ready for public review this fall, perhaps as early as next month. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers draft Master Water Control Manual and revised Environmental Impact Statement will show how the Corps hopes to balance a complex set of factors converging on the near 385 mile Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river system. The documents will outline how the Corps proposes to manage needs for water supply, recreation, and power generation, plus deal with potential threat of drought and floods, environmental concerns, and other demands on the ACF. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on that system that empties into Apalachicola Bay in the Florida Panhandle. The Corps’ website states the Master Manual and EIS are scheduled for release in September; however, Corps Spokesman Patrick Robbins said it may not be out that soon. “Will let you know when we get a little closer,”

he said by email. “Right now, just Fall 2015.” One reason for the potential delay is the Corps’ apparent burden to supply documents sought by Georgia and Florida in a federal lawsuit. The Corps has been asked to provide documents on “pretty much anything the Mobile District has done since 1975,” said U.S. Justice Department Attorney Michael T. Gray. “Pulling back and gathering and reviewing and figuring that out while at the same time trying to complete the Corps’ primary mission here, which is to revise the manuals … is simply too much,” Gray said. His remarks appeared in the transcript from the July teleconference between state attorneys and the special master presiding over pre-trial procedures. In that teleconference, Gray asks for extra time to submit documents the states want. Once released, the public can view the Master Manual draft on the Corps website, www.sam.usace.army.mil. In addition, the Corps can forward CDs with the documents by special request. Robbins said those who signed up for updates at

Corps’ scoping meetings or afterward will be notified in a newsletter. “Once the draft is released, a 45 day public comment period will commence in which we will hold several public workshops throughout the basin. Sites and locations have not yet been determined,” Robbins said. Final approval and implementation of the Master Manual are planned for March 2017. Demands on the ACF from Georgia, Alabama, and Florida have launched more than two decades of lawsuits. Water stakeholders in the three states will scrutinize how the Corps’ plans to handle the many purposes and needs on the ACF. The draft Master Manual will include appendices detailing specific operations of five federal reservoirs on the ACF. Downstream from Lanier, the Corps manages West Point Reservoir, near West Point on the Georgia/Alabama border; Walter F. George Dam, also on the Ga./Ala. line at Fort Gaines; George W. Andrews Reservoir, south of Walter F. George; and Jim Woodruff Reservoir at Lake

Seminole, at the Ga./Fla. line. The Master Water Control Manual for the ACF River Basin will update the current plan completed in 1958, which does not include Water Control Manuals for the West Point, Walter F. George, or George W. Andrews projects. Those manuals came on line later. Environmental impact statements for the reservoirs were prepared in the 1970s. The Corps’ website reports that existing Water Control Manuals do not address water supply operations. An ACF Water Control Plan draft proposed in 1989 was never finalized due to litigation filed by Alabama, according to Corps’ documents. After that litigation was deferred, other legal maneuvering continued to bear on the master plan’s completion. Prior to the current Florida v. Georgia litigation, the last major case was the 11th Circuit Court’s ruling in 2011 that Lanier could be used to meet Atlanta’s water supply needs. Robbins said Corps personnel have been working on the current draft Master Manual for three years, following the latest ruling.

USCGA is seeking new members with boats When the average person thinks of the U.S. Coast Guard, they probably first think of rescues at sea involving the use of Coast Guard boats or helicopters. When the recreational boater thinks of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the first thing that may come to mind is safe boating courses offered by the Auxiliary, or maybe our Vessel Safety Check program. A few (whom we have helped on the water) may think of our safety or regatta patrols that are performed on area lakes, primarily from May through September, weekends and holidays. We operate our own vessels, which now range in size from around 18’ to 32’. Due to recent retirements and transfers we are looking for recreational boaters who are owners of vessels within that approximate size and who might want to investigate the benefits of membership in the largest volunteer arm of any of the branches of the military, currently around 30,000 strong. Part of our expenses incurred while performing patrols, such as fuel, oil, etc., are reimbursed by

the radios during patrol hours and communicates to the “duty vessel” if a situation is reported Roy where assistance is needed. Safe boating course set for Aug. 8 Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Lanier, announces a one-day, seven-lesson “About Boating Safely” course. The course is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2015. This course also serves as a PWC certified course for children under the age of 16. This course will be given at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Operations Center, 6595 Lights Ferry Rd., Flowery Branch, Ga., on the left just before the entrance to Aqualand Marina. Classes run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and cost is $35. Discounts available for additional family members. Course contents include:

• Know your boat • Before getting underway • Navigating the waterways • Operating your vessel safely • Boating’s legal requirements • Boating emergencies • Enjoying watersports • State of Georgia regulations State law now requires any person born after January 1, 1998, must have completed a boater education course approved by the Ga. DNR before he or she may legally operate a motorized vessel on Georgia state waters. Successful completion of this course may result in a reduction in your boat’s insurance premium.

The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides Lake level: Down 2.3 feet Clarity: Clear Temperature: Low 90s Bass fishing Bass fishing is fair. The top water has been slow but the drop shot has been the go to rig in recent weeks. The water is hot. Even with this hot water some fish are still willing to come up, but we are seeing more of a need to tweak the baits or presentation in terms of size, action or color in order to get the fish to commit. In the mornings, we have been opting for a swim bait over shallower points and humps on the main lake, sometimes with brush and sometimes not. This bite is fair early when the wind is up in the mornings. Once the sun gets up good, the top water bite is fair and it is time to use the drop sot rig and an 18 inch leader. Morning dawn and blue hand poured worms are best. The fish are deep and hugging the bottom over and around the brush in the 20 to 30 feet range on both points and humps. A Chug Bug, a Gun Fish and a Sworming Hornet Bite Size

Herring Swimbait have been fair. When you cannot get the fish to come up, go down to them with a drop shot, the Fish Head Spin, the Dude or a shaky head worm. This bass fishing report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! service, 404 561-2564/ www.bigfishon.com Striper fishing Striper fishing just doesn’t get any better than recent weeks. We have been fishing from first light until 11 a.m. I have gotten a few reports of an afternoon bite but when it is 90-plus degrees and the fish are biting in the morning, then I will fish mornings. As we have discussed in previous reports the fish are below the thermocline which is at 29 feet. Even the smaller stripers which are a little more tolerant in warmer water cannot handle 89 degree water. The fish are showing up in deeper water from Browns Bridge to the dam and just off the creek channels. Six Mile Creek, Four Mile Creek, Flowery Branch, and main lake deep water pockets are all

good places to start your search. Your electronics are critical in locating these deep water fish. Turn your sensitive up to ensure you can see a fish at 100-plus feet. Down rods with 2 ounce weights and 6 to 8 foot 12 pound test fluorocarbon leaders are your best approach. The critical factor in summertime live bait fishing is lively bait. We are starting our day with seven dozen Blueback Herring and changing them every five minutes on a rotating basis. Never “check” a bait and then drop it back down. If it is time to check the bait it is time to change it. The act of bringing the Herring up through warm water is enough to stress it out and degrade its performance. Umbrella rigs and Lead core trolling is also working. Set the Umbrella rigs 120 to 140 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 mph. Set the lead core line at 7 to 8 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 mph. This striper fishing report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! service, 404 561-2564/ www.bigfishon.com.

Crappie fishing Crappie fishing remains fair to good. You may ask, “How significant is water temperature?” When we report a water temperature, it references the surface temperature. Fish make the necessary adjustments and move to deeper water where the temperature change is significant. Some fish move into natural timber, and some move to deeper brush piles, both those around docks or stand alone. So if you are fishing a private pond or reservoir that holds crappie, you will obviously fish the deepest part of the water. On Lake Lanier, you simply move to deeper brush piles. The crappie are currently holding on brush piles in 25 to 30 foot depths. The challenge that you will have is to feel the bite. The deeper they are, the less noticeable the bite will be. This is the reason high visibility line is important. I switched to 2 pound test high visibility line. Both soft body and hair jigs are working equally well, and chartreuse color is producing best. One sixteenth ounce jig head is recommended to get your jig to

the depth needed. Helpful tip: if you don’t get hung occasionally, you are not getting deep enough. Your Lowrance Down Scan is a must. Early morning until about 10 a.m. is the best bite. However if you want to beat the heat, night fishing remains fair underneath bridges, with live bait recommended. Be safe on the water as the lake continues to be crowded, and wear your life jacket, it can save your life! This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club, www. laniercrappieanglers.com. Note: Call Ken Sturdivant about the “On the Water Schools” for Sonar or the Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass or a full day striper school. MORE INFO: 770 889-2654, ken@southernfishing.com

GH ’96 approves $1.3 million master plan By Jane Harrison The Gainesville Hall ’96 board last month approved a $1.3 million master plan for improvements at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. Voting first by email and then at the July 17 board meeting, the LLOV governing body okayed the design and cost estimate submitted by local architect Millard, Inc. The plan outlines phase 1 improvements to the former Olympic facility to prepare it for a 2016 Olympic qualifying canoe/kayak event next May. Board Chairperson Mimi Collins said she is “really excited” about the master plan, though somewhat stressed about it being a month behind the proposed time line. The plan calls for a bridge, ramp and renovations at the Olympic tower, renovations to the service building on the plaza, replacement of restrooms at Clarks Bridge park across the street from the tower, and an octagonal pavilion, also on the park-side. Most of the costs are associated with tower-side improvements estimated at $898,475. The approved plan initiates a makeover projected to include renovations to the boathouse. The next step is distribution of a bid package with hopes of beginning construction in September. Work is targeted for completion prior to the May 1922 Pan American Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships. About 200 Olympic hopefuls from 33 North and South American countries will compete for berths in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. GH ’96 won the bid to host the qualifier last fall. It will take place almost exactly 20 years after the Atlanta 1996 Olympics which held canoe/kayak and rowing competitions at the Lake Lanier site. GH ’96 plans to kick off the 20th anniversary celebration with the high profile Olympic qualifier. Funding for venue improvements includes budgeted amounts from Gainesville and Hall County, special local option sales tax allotments, and revenue generated from LLOV events. GH ’96 is also seeking state and regional grants for a potential $800,000. The money is needed not only for implementation of the master plan; it is also needed to purchase new docks and starting gates for the championship races. In addition, the board is seeking sponsorships and additional money to actually put on the event, which will include opening and closing ceremonies,

food for athletes and coaches, shuttles between athlete accommodations at Brenau University and LLOV, plus food, lodging and transportation for event officials. An anonymous sponsor has committed $35,000, according to Dixie Truelove, GH ’96 fundraising chairperson. Collins and LLOV Manager Morgan House got a preview of managerial and tourist aspects of the Pan Am Games when they attended this year’s rendition near Toronto last month. Collins said the Canadian organizers did little to promote a small town near the canoe/kayak venue, which was remote from the Toronto main campus. She suggested local tourism agencies design maps, logo-emblazoned bags, and signs to get athletes and spectators into downtown Gainesville. She added after races end around 2-3 p.m. on Lanier, attendees will seek food, entertainment and local culture away from the venue. Collins described the Toronto event as “not much fun for athletes,” who crave high energy and excitement. “We need to figure out ways to make it more exciting,” she said. Collins and House also met with Pam Am Games officials to learn more about providing transportation, boats, food and how to help attendees from other coun-

tries with Visas and logistical concerns. They mentioned the need for translators, bi-lingual signs, and financial arrangements with visitors whose countries have different banking policies. In other GH ’96 news: • Officials from the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club and Lake Lanier Rowing Club responded to questions from board member Scott Gibbs, also District 3 County Commissioner, about how club athletes’ trips are financed. LCKC President Terry Baker and LLRC Past President John Ferriss reported that the clubs pay regatta entry fees and athletes or parents of youth athletes finance their travel, accommodations and associated expenses. The clubs pay $1,000 monthly to rent the venue. Gibbs said citizens have questioned how athletes’ travel to events is paid. • House reported June-July LLOV events included two weddings, a real estate seminar, wake surfing competition, two canoe/kayak regattas, and a Northeast Georgia Travel Association meeting. In addition, outdoor Movie Nights were planned July 31, Aug. 28 and Sept. 25. House added local bicycle race organizer Dingo Race Productions has contacted him about possibly running a cyclocross event on both sides of the venue.

See a movie at the Olympic Venue By Jane Harrison Movies under the stars productions have big screens popping up all over North Georgia, from downtowns to farm fields. Now, the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue adds a new dimension to the outdoor film flick: a backdrop of Lake Lanier. The Shoreline Cinema Series presents “World’s Fastest Indian” Aug. 28 at LLOV on a movie screen set up in front of the grandstands. The free movie is the second planned at the venue, which opened the series with a show at the park beach.

The film series is the latest expansion of culture at the venue that emerged from canoe/kayak and rowing in the 1996 Olympics. “We wanted to offer the community a fun and free event to get out to the venue,” said LLOV Manager Morgan House. He and assistant manager James Watson chose sports and inspirational movies. The August movie tells the story of Indian motorcycle pilot Burt Munro’s 1967 effort to set a world record for speed. The September 25 show, “Miracle,” is a docudrama See Movie, page 49

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Corps accepting public comment on ACRA By Jane Harrison The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is considering public comments about a national collegiate rowing regatta prior to rendering a final decision about its future on Lake Lanier. After requests for special consideration, Nick Baggett, Corps Resource Manager for Lake Lanier, agreed to accept public comment on the American Collegiate Rowing Association national championship regatta. The event has brought about 1,500 rowers to the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue on Memorial Day weekend for five years. The 30 day public comment period was to begin after it was advertised in local newspapers around July 21. Comments can be submitted at: parks.lanier@usace.army.mil. Baggett said the Corps would issue a final decision on the regatta within 60 to 90 days of the advertisement’s publication. “We had a request to give it special consideration and we have,” said Baggett, referring to pleas from the Lake Lanier Rowing Club and Gainesville Hall ’96 to allow the regatta to return to Lake Lanier. GH ’96, the governing body for the Olympic venue, sent the Corps a letter touting the regatta’s local economic impact and safety record. The regatta is held on Saturday and Sunday of the holiday weekend when the lake gets packed with motor boats. Baggett cited safety concerns and

Corps’ desire for policy consistency in an earlier decision to deny future permits for ACRA on Memorial Day weekend. He pointed to a previous agreement with LLOV that major events not be scheduled on holidays when the lake gets heavy motor boat traffic. The Corps’ agreement with LLOV also contains a clause for potential “special consideration” of permits. Baggett said any interested party can comment on the website linked in the advertisement. He added the Corps’ permit decision may not be based on the sheer number of comments from either regatta supporters or detractors. “We could have 100 participants say it’s the greatest (regatta) in the world, but a legitimate safety concern brought to our attention” can outweigh sentiments logged by multitudinous supporters. ACRA President Desmond Stahl has said LLOV is the organization’s first choice for its championship regatta, but is keeping an eye on a potential relocation to Oklahoma City. Rowers, coaches and spectators at last May’s regatta voiced desire to come back to Lanier. Stahl said the regatta’s date on the holiday weekend cannot be changed due to team and season schedules. The Corps’ permit decision is expected before late October.

Wake surfers shred water at Olympic venue By Jane Harrison Rollers broke on the shoreline as athletes shredded gnarly waves and caught air on boards that writhed on white foamy water. Sounds like a scene from a surf flick, huh? Nope, it took place on the blue channel of the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue last month in a wake surf competition. Board shorts, ’70s rock, and an announcer spewing California slang with a Southern accent pervaded the traditional home of the local paddling and rowing community in the INT League of Georgia wake surf event. Forty two participants signed up for the first motorized competition at the venue where Olympic kayakers and rowers used human power for glory in the 1996 Olympics. The first dude on a board had a swell ride, pulling up on a tow rope, getting his bal-

ance on his stick, and riding the wake erupting behind an inboard motor. Michael Moulder, 13, thought it was pretty cool that he made venue history as the first official wake surf competitor at LLOV. Proud of his performance, he was unruffled when a dingy cut off the motor boat generating his wake. The small craft crossed into the channel directly in front of the wake boat and stopped in its path, as if the pilot was totally oblivious to the activity or perhaps deliberately attempting to block it. Whatever. Moulder launched again, finishing his out-and-back ride in front of the Olympic tower. “I did pretty good,” said the teen surfer who had only gotten up on a board the first time the day before. Are the waters now clear to travel by boat to Cuba? Not so fast … Center consoles that now can cruise in excess of 45 – 50 knots can travel the 97 miles from Key West to Morro Castle that lies at the entrance of Havana Harbor in two and a half hours or less. The trip there is easy as long as the weather cooperates. However, when you arrive, there are only a few places to clear into Cuba. Some travelers say it takes hours and also may require bribes. Also because of the economic embargo that is still intact even though the U.S. and Cuba are re-opening their embassies, insurance companies will not cover your yacht in Cuban waters. Remember, it’s been 54 years since the U.S. cut ties with Cuba. If you thought it would be nice to cruise the northern coast of Cuba forget it, as all the bays and coves are closed. It will take a while for marinas that are almost nonexistent now to open up and provide the services that Florida yacht owners are used to. Keep in mind the average wage for Cubans is $20 per month and most have no phones. Poverty is a big problem. The yachting trade should provide some help when legal issues get solved. At a recent yacht symposium it was estimated 30,000 to 40,000 boats a year crossing to Cuba to explore her shores. For more information log on to: www.noonsite.com or www.cruisingcuba. com. Also the St. Petersburg to Havana route is being discussed to be on again. The SORC (Southern Ocean Racing Conference) use to have 30 to 40 boats sailing to Havana each year. Many stories were told as well as the ones on shore at the Tropicana. On the south shores of Cuba there are Cuban fishing centers that an Italian-owned outfitter is licensed to bring anglers to five destinations. One of these areas is named Jardines De La Beina, the Gardens of the Queen (so named by Christopher Columbus). The area was set aside by the Cuban government in 1996 as a protected marine archipelago. It’s an area almost 160 kilometers long and made up of more than 600 cays. The fishermen use almost exclusively fly fishing gear to catch Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Barracuda and Man Grove Snapper. This little used area is probably known as the Cuban honey hole for fly fishermen and their guides. For more information go

Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments

to: www.cubanfishingcenters. com. For those of you who don’t have a boat, ferry service will resume soon from four Florida locations, which are: Port Manatee on Tampa Bay, Port Miami, Port Everglades, and the port of Key West. As soon as the negotiations are complete I’m sure you will see the advertisements. You might check out, Havana Ferry Partners of Fort Lauderdale, United Caribbean Lines, Airline Brokers Co. and Baja Ferries of Miami. They all say they would like to provide services before the end of 2015. I’m sure the stories of the first trips will soon appear in a favorite boating magazine. It should be interesting. Children and boating If youngsters and teens are part of your boating family, they need to be properly taught the ways to perform certain tasks while being aboard and underway. Start with say the 4 to 8 year olds, who should always wear a P.F.D. when on the dock or onboard even when not underway. The Coast Guard Auxiliary also has a class for youngsters and they get a coloring book to help teach them terminology and rules of the road. Marlinspike Seamanship is great to teach them. Get them a 10 to 12 foot piece of 3/8” line and teach them how to splice, tie knots and the proper way to stow lines. They can learn how to handle dock lines and fenders. Next they can learn how to use a boat hook. As they get older and more skilled teach them the proper way to deploy the anchor and rode. Go through M.O.B. (man overboard) drills and teach them how to throw a line to the M.O.B. Then of course there is always a maintenance and wash down. Remind them that the clean up after the fun is part of boating. As they get older assign them tasks that they know they can accomplish. The sooner they can complete these without a problem, the sooner they will be re-

ferred to as First Mate. As they grow into teenagers and want to run your boat or a P.W.C., teach them boat handling and what they will need to pass the test so they can pilot a boat on their own when qualified. If you are new to boating go to the Discover Boating website which includes a new directory of youth boating programs, more than 3,000 local and national programs are listed. Boating and fishing allows families and friends to spend more time together. The better boaters know the safety and rules the safer the future of boating will be. New source for cruising info When planning your next cruise of the ICW, Tennessee River, Atlantic or Gulf Coast and you want to know what marinas have to offer, or places to visit, you can now log onto Active Captain (www.activecaptain.com) and review experiences and comments from those who have cruised before you. Active Captain helps cruisers avoid visits to marinas or areas that don’t live up to expectations. Also, there will be comments on any navigational changes on charts. So use and contribute to Active Captain for better cruising information. New fishermen’s magazine Several months back I was given a copy of the recently introduced Anglers Journal for Serious Fishermen. William Sisson, past editor of Soundings, created the new publication, and Mary South, the present editor of Soundings is deputy editor. Stories and photos concern fishermen who have caught a world record and how it affected their future angling. Also included: the latest in boats designed exclusively for fishermen. Then there are just the plain interesting stories. Jack Hemingway, Ernest’s son and Sasha Tolstoy, Leo Tolstoy’s great great grandson tell some great fishing stories and refer to themselves as trout fishing bums. The magazine is published four times a year. To subscribe call: 1 800-877-5207 or email: editorial@soundingspub. com. Cost is $19.95 per year. Ethanol percentage may increase Boat U.S. has notified its members that the EPA wants to increase ethanol in all fuels. The organization is seeking comments from boaters so they can present them to the EPA and hopefully prevent it from happening. Contact them at: www.boatus.com/

gov/contact. We have all heard and experience the fuel problems caused by ethanol. Here is your chance to be heard. Write or send an e-mail. Practice safe boating, be cour-

teous, wear your PFD and I’ll see you on the water. Mike Rudderham is a veteran marine surveyor with more than 40 years experience in the marine industry.

• Wake Surfers Continued from page 14

As was the case with many of the teen competitors, Moulder was surrounded by family and friends. Parents Mike and Marla Moulder and his 17 year old sister Malerie joined family friend Karrie Martin to watch the water show. “We love it … it’s fun for everyone,” said Marla, whose family lives on the south end of Lake Lanier. Sixteen year old Sydney Johnson watched from the grandstands where her family pitched a shade tent on a blistering Saturday morning. Amped up, she awaited her ride. “I’ll kind of go out and do my best and have fun … the main focus is having fun. There’s no pressure,” said the second year wake surfer. Her brother, Jay, the wake boarder in the family, wouldn’t get a chance to compete in the surf-only event. The siblings practice on the Chestatee River near their home in Dawsonville. At the venue, Sydney saw all she needed: clean open water and an excellent view from the grandstands. “It’s awesome,” she said. Besides immediate supporters, the event brought few spectators to the grandstands, where a large screen showed competitors’ moves from behind-the-boat cameras. For those watching, the starts, falls and stops of many newbies presented plenty of downtime. Competitors get three falls in each run. Meanwhile, the an-

nouncer admonished them to “adjust them board shorts to cover them white legs” so their ride wouldn’t be interrupted by pulling at their garb. Food trucks loaded with fajitas and snow cones pulled up on the plaza at lunchtime. INT League coordinator Jenny Servitz deemed the venue among the best, as did Danny Bierbricher, who instructs boarders and surfers on Lake Allatoona. The setting, close to water in a fairly protected channel, makes it prime for watersports events, he said. The motorized event is among the culture changes evident at the venue this summer as its governing board attempts to broaden its appeal and raise more money. Venue manager Morgan House saw the small competition as a test run for a potential future national boarding or skiing event. At least one board member, John Ferriss, long time officer of the Lake Lanier Rowing Club, expressed concern about the size of waves generated by motorboats for wake surfing. Although hype from the loudspeakers ranked the waves as massive, they actually weren’t that big when they lapped at the shore. Paddlers stroking along the far side of the channel on a dragonboat proceeded halfway down the course seemingly undaunted when the surf was up.

Pirates Poker Run ‘very close’ to raising $400,000 for children’s charities By Pamela A. Keene The seventh annual Pirates of Lanier Poker Run apparently did it again. In mid-July, the event raised around $400,000 to benefit three local children’s charities – Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hall County. “The numbers aren’t all in yet and the accounting is still going on, but we feel certain that we raised very close to the recordbreaking figures that we did in 2014,” said John Woodruff, president of Lanier Partners of North Georgia, sponsors of the threeday event that attracts boaters from across the U.S. “Mother Nature smiled on us this year with great weather and the locals came out in droves. We had many more spectator boats than in previous years and everyone had a great time.” Nearly 290 boats registered for the Poker Run, the majority coming from out of town. Many more bought multiple poker hands to expand their chances of winning big prizes. The three-day event included nearly 400 people at the Gianni’s meet and greet on Thursday night. More than 500 meals were served at the Cheeseburger in Paradise raft up mid-day Friday, with food provided by Norman’s Landing. During the weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary set up voluntary boat inspections at Port

Woodruff said that all the funds raised from the weekend’s activities were free and clear of obligated expenses because three large sponsors paid for all the costs of the poker run. A youngster is excited to get his hands on one of the poker cards, above. Poker hands begin piling up on the big board, right. A couple of pirates went “all out” to decorate their boat for this year's Poker Run, left.

Condo residents greet pirates with Peach Bellinis By Jane Harrison Pirates invading a private neighborhood on the south end of Lake Lanier got a taste of southern hospitality spiked by the fun-lovers at Habersham Pointe Condominiums. Condo dwellers cranked up a blender, put on their finest medieval seafaring garb, and welcomed Poker Run boaters with a net bearing Peach Bellinis. For the second year, condo residents served up the icy peach nectar and champagne concoction from a dock festooned with pirate flags, banners and a couple of fake parrots. “Last year people said ‘Man, this is awesome! We’ll

remember you and come back,” said Beth Carnahan, maker of the signature drink that put Habersham Pointe on the Lanier treasure map. “It’s like a little taste of Atlanta,” said the former big city caterer, who blended her mixology talent with the event planning finesse of neighbor Royanne Donnelly. It took little persuasion from the retired flight attendant and caterer to rally the condo crew to throw a dock party for pirates in the charity event. “Turn on the blender and they will come,” joked Donnelly, who oversaw dock operations, judged costumes and boat décor and noted young faces on board.

Bellinis, administered in oneshot plastic containers with a long-necked net, went only to mature buccaneers. After drawing their cards, marauders reached into the net for a sweet, refreshing treat on a scalding summer day. “There’s nothing like a little morning shot,” quipped Donnelly, who counted 23 boats by 10:30 a.m. “We winches are here to serve,” Diane Grinstead chimed in. “We stood out in the rain last year,” Grinstead said. The party went on, despite the drenching. “We had an absolutely marvelous time hanging out with each other and seeing the See Condo, page 25

Port Royale: Setting the bar high for Park Marine

By Pamela A. Keene If you haven’t been to Port Royale recently, you’re in for some changes and additional improvements. As the marina nears its 10th year of being part of the Park Marine family, changes continue to take place to provide even more amenities for members and guests. Last year, Port Royale revamped its entrance off Browns Bridge Road, installing a cascading waterfall and re-routing traffic into the marina. In June, it opened an onsite boat showroom at the corner of the entrance to the marina and Browns Bridge Road. The 5,000-square-foot facility sells Yamaha PWCs and jet boats, Tracker pontoon boats, Bayliner runabouts and Hurricane deck boats. The marina has retained its in-the-water sales docks. The showroom also offers boating accessories and serves as one of three ship’s stores on the property. The marina has increased its boat storage capacity, adding more than 100 covered slips for cruisers and houseboats. As of May the marina has nearly 740 in-the-water slips. Current drystack facilities can accommodate

455 boats, and the marina is adding 66 enclosed shed dry storage options with power and water. Plans are to expand boat slips and storage even further in the off season. “We’re also building a new bath house with laundry facilities and a fitness room,” said Brent Pearson, operations manager with Park Marine. “It will have cardio and weight equipment for our members to use.” The marina’s floating restaurant Pelican Pete’s is a popular gathering spot for boaters. The new menu includes peel-and-eat

shrimp, fish tacos, burgers, barbecue, sandwiches, wraps and salads. Port Royale has a rental fleet of nearly 70 jet boats, pontoons, runabouts and houseboats. “Our rental fleet here is the biggest in the company, and our dry-stack is the largest as well,” Pearson said. “We’ve been very successful here on Lanier and within a couple of years, I feel like Port Royale will be our largest marina. It’s been a real successful venture.” MORE INFO: www.bestinboating.com

• Condo Continued from Page 24 boats,” she added. The dockside celebrants refined their service skills after a few spills and melted Bellinis last year. The night before the 2015 invasion, Carnahan premixed enough champagne and peach nectar for 600 2-ounce drinks. In a tent above the condo’s grassy lawn, she and Suzanne Spivey crunched up the alcoholic beverage with ice and poured the peachy foam into plastic salad dressing cups. After capping each, a Bellini runner carried batches of 15-20 drinks down to the dock in a portable cooler. “It’s not as much fun as being out there, but it’s more fun than not doing it at all,” Spivey said. She recalled pirate days of yore before big boats and big money chased many of the locals out of the poker run. “I think they enjoy it more (than participants),” said Bruce Longmore, one of the event organizers. He eyed Habersham Pointe as a poker stop after Bald Ridge Marina opted out. Needing a stop on the south side, Longmore looked to the lakeside condos as the “next logical place.”

Bellinis delivered by cooler, Beth Carnahan makes her way back from the dock.

The 60-unit development built in the 1980s is about as close to the water as law allows. Its five docks are situated on a broad, easily maneuvered channel. And, its residents, many who left Atlanta for the lake life, were game! “They were thrilled to have it,” Longmore said. The location and their enthusiasm made it the only non-marina stop for the event. It’s not known how many of Carnahan’s 600 Peach Bellinis remained after pirates departed by boat. It’s pretty certain they went down the hatch somewhere.

Buck Denton extends a net full of Peach Bellinis to Poker Run boaters as Royanne Donnelly welcomes them.

Diane Grinstead shows Theresa Burgess the way to fun at the Habersham Pointe Condominiums party dock.

August 2015

That was one tough month of July I am so glad July is over! That was one of the hottest in years across most of north Georgia with daily highs in the low to mid 90s most every day. Those pop up afternoon storms were extremely fierce with that high heat too. We sure saw some impressive lightning displays almost every single day. I do believe temperatures will remain slightly above our average high of 88 through most of the upcoming month. August is also a fairly dry month and I expect to see an average of four inches of rain. The only thing that could change that would be a tropical storm or hurricane. At this time of year, we begin to see huge waves of thunderstorms roll off the west coast of Africa. The storm waves will move out into the open Atlantic. Most will fade away. Others will develop into the strongest tropical systems of the season. The reason: they have a large open expanse of warm water to cross. By the time they cross the Atlantic into the Caribbean, they can become monsters. I know we’ve all heard it will be a quiet hurricane season. While I tend to agree, it only takes one big storm, like Hurricane Andrew, to wreak havoc on the U.S. Coast. There are a couple of reasons why we will have a quieter than average hurricane season. First and foremost, is El Nino. This eastern equatorial sea surface warming causes global wind patterns to change.

During El Nino, strong westerly winds in the upper atmosphere Glenn are very strong. This Burns wind shear tends to dissipate tropical systems before they can gain too Lanier much strength. Second Outlook is the widespread African dust that is currently blowing across the Atlantic. I was fishing in south Florida last month and it looked like the smog capital of the world. It was extremely hazy every single day due to the African dust. Meteorologists and hurricane specialists analyzing satellite data from the past 25 years found that during years when the dust storms rose up, fewer hurricanes swept across the Atlantic, while periods of low dust storm activity were followed by more intense hurricane activity. Hurricanes are fueled by heat and moisture, and it’s theorized the dust storms help muffle the storms before they fully develop by cooling the Atlantic Ocean. I am waiting to see if the pattern of increased African dust storms will continue to have an effect on our tropical season. I also wanted to mention this has been a horrible year for lightning fatalities across the country. So far, we have had 20 fatalities. With above average temperatures continuing this month, that means storms can be huge, creating intense lightning. These summer storms, as you well know, can fire up in a very short period of time. Lightning is going to be your main threat.

Lanier resident and cancer survivor starts business to fight the disease Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene A message left on her answering machine 11 years ago changed Sue Sigmon-Nosach’s life forever. “You have ovarian cancer and six months at best to live,” the recorded voice from her doctor’s office announced. “You should get your affairs in order. There’s not a whole lot we can do.” Today, Sigmon-Nosach is an 11-year ovarian cancer survivor, almost an anomaly in the world of gynecological cancers that silently kill more than 26,500 women each year of the nearly 71,500 who are diagnosed. She and her husband Mike, a retired residential builder, live in Murrayville on Lake Lanier. “The survival rate for five years or longer is only about 25 percent, if it’s diagnosed in Stage 3, the most common level of diagnosis. If these cancers are caught early, in Stage 1 for instance, the survival rate can be as high as 80 to 90 percent,” she said. “Gynecological cancers are often overlooked or misdiagnosed because the symptoms are different for every woman. In the past 50 years, no new drugs have been developed to treat it, and in the past 25 years, no new tests have been developed to detect it. It’s more than time to raise awareness for these silent killers, and I hope that one day we will have as much respect and attention as the fight against breast cancer.” Sigmon-Nosach is among the fortunate few as a long-time survivor. She wears teal every day –

the official color for ovarian cancer – and spends her waking hours working to raise awareness and develop financial assistance for gynecological cancer patients across Northeast Georgia. But, as she puts it, “God wasn’t ready to take me then; he still had things for me to do.” Those things include helping patients with gynecological cancers through the stressful times of treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, not by holding their hands but by providing them with financial assistance for their expenses of daily living. In 2011, she and her late art partner and good friend Debbie Torbett, another victim of ovarian cancer, created 2 Broken Broads, making three-dimensional mosaic windows from broken glass bottles, bowls, plates and other items, and selling them at art shows. Sold primarily through weekend arts and crafts shows, more than 350 pieces have been sold in more than 35 states in the past five years. Each piece, inspired by popular songs from the ´50s, ´60s and ´70s, includes a small teal-blue ovarian cancer ribbon among the shards of glass. A portion of the proceeds from each sale is donated to the cause: The Partnership for Gynecological Cancer Support, which the two founded in 2013 as a Georgia non-profit, with the vision of making an even more significant impact on the lives of gynecological cancer patients. The organization collaborates with area healthcare entities

across North Georgia, including the medical practice of Andrew Green, M.D., one of the nation’s foremost gynecological oncologists, as well as Northeast Georgia Health System and Northside Hospital Cancer Institute. From these connections, the partnership identifies gynecological patients who may need a bit of financial assistance during their treatment. “Imagine that you’ve been diagnosed with a deadly disease and you can’t continue your job, take care of your family or even pay for groceries and household expenses,” Sigmon-Nosach said. “Going through this journey is difficult enough, stressful enough, that worrying about how you’re going to pay your electric bill or make a house payment is probably the least of your worries. But in treatment, any additional stress can make your chances of survival much less likely.” The group has some financial support from Northeast Georgia Health System and Northside Hospital, but the majority of funds come from private donations and fund-raisers. Each fall, the partnership hosts “A Broad’s Brush: The Art of Survivors” in Gainesville. The first year the event was held in a private home by invitation only and through donations, sales of art by area artists touched in some way by gynecological cancers, and both silent and live auctions. More than $17,000 was raised. PHOTO BY PAMELA A. KEENE Last year, 2014 was a banner Board members gather outside the Quinlan visual Arts Center during A year for the partnership. chosen as the recipient of all the proceeds from First Baptist Church of Gainesville’s annual arts event, Hearts and Hands Emporium, on the third weekend of September. “This was quite an honor and a major boost for us for being the young organization we are,” she said. “September – which is ovarian cancer awareness month – was a whirlwind in a good way. Also, 2 Broken Broads participated in several art shows in North Georgia, including Gainesville’s Art in the Square. We hosted our annual A Broad’s Brush the next week, this time working with the Quinlan Visual Arts Center and raising more than $47,000 on that Sunday afternoon. But 2014 was also a year of sadness. In January, Sue’s longtime friend, fellow ovarian cancer patient and art partner Debbie Torbett, 64, succumbed to the disease after a nine-year fight and

130 rounds of chemo. “It was such a hard loss for all of us, including her husband Ken, who continues to be a staunch supporter and very involved in the work of the partnership,” SigmonNosach said. “And while all these wonderful things were coming together for the partnership, we saw some of our dearest friends pass on from this deadly disease.” This year, A Broad’s Brush takes place on Sunday, September 27, at the Quinlan. Plans have been under way for months with a volunteer committee. The group is seeking sponsors, gathering items for the silent and live auctions – including some international vacations – and lining up the nearly 20 artists who will participate. Sigmon-Nosach is already at work on this year’s signature mosaic window, a multi-dimensional face based on the song, “If You Could Read My See Shore Lines, page 48

Beer & music mix in Dawsonville fest By Jane Harrison Beer will flow and music will blast in Downtown Dawsonville Aug. 21 & 22 in the third annual Dawsonville Beer and Music Fest. More than a dozen major breweries and craft brewers are expected to tap 80 kegs in the town notarized for its moonshinerunning past. Fest organizer Jennifer Hyder expects attendance to double last year’s crowd of about 2,000. They’ll come not just for the beer (Yuengling, Bud Light, ShockTop, Full Sail, Carsons, as well as Georgia brews from CherryStreet, Jekyll Island and others), but also for the sounds. Classic and southern rock plus Nashville twang will spill from the main stage. ACDC tribute band Back n Black caps off Friday’s line-up that includes classic rockers All Night Long and Reluctant Saints. Headliner Luke Combs, a local with Nashville connections, culminates Saturday’s lead in from Johnny Awesome, Kick Rub Punch, Southern Accent, Paris Luna, and area native Alex Hall. Hyder labeled the fest “family friendly” with bouncy houses, kids’ activities, food and crafts.

Attendees 21 and older get a wristband ID to purchase beer, wine, mixed drinks, and, of course, moonshine. It all takes place behind Dawsonville City Hall/Georgia Racing Hall of Fame on Ga. 53 East. (See Outdoor Calendar). Unlike some beer fests that charge a hefty admission fee, the Dawsonville event is $10 per person, with children 12 and younger

admitted free. Imbibers pay $5 per drink. Those who bought a 22 ounce commemorative mug for $12 last year can bring them back for $5 refills. Fest organizers sold out the 500 mugs last year. Hyder said they’ll have more. Fest proceeds go to Camp Southern Ground for kids with ADHD and the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

Firefighter Combat Challenge set for August The 2015 Firefighter Combat Challenge will be held in Flowery Branch on August 14-15, marking the first time the event has been held in Hall County. It will be held at Stonebridge Village, 5855 Spouts Springs Rd., Flowery Branch in the Home Depot parking lot. Friday’s action starts at 5 p.m. with Saturday’s event starting at 10 a.m. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. The Firefighter Combat Challenge involves firefighters simulating the physical demands of real-life firefighting by completing an obstacle course containing five tasks. Included are a

high-rise tower climb, hose hoist, forcible entry simulator, hose drag, and victim rescue as they race against other competitors and the clock. Additionally, while completing this course, each firefighter is required to wear full bunker gear and air pack. Previous competitions have been aired on ESPN. In addition, a scaled-down kids’ version of the Combat Challenge, as well as other free children’s activities will be available. Previous competitions have drawn thousand of spectators and hundreds of competitors from across the U.S. MORE INFO: 770 531-6838; www.hallcounty.org

• Shore Lines Continued from Page 45 Mind.” It will be sold by limited-participation raffle. “For the first time, we’re opening the event to the public, and we’re charging a small admission,” she said. “It will be catered with hors d’oeuvres and beverages, and we’ll be limited to 300 people, so we’re urging people to register in advance. Of course, we are seeking sponsors and additional items for our auctions. Our goal is to raise at least $100,000 through the event.” Sigmon-Nosach, her volunteer board of directors – many of whom are business executives and committed community activists who have been touched by gynecological cancers – continues to carry on with awareness programs, fund-raising and outreach. In 2013, the group assisted 32 gynecological cancer patients with grants for their living expenses. In 2014, that number increased to 154 people. Already in the first six months of 2015, the partnership has helped 113, on track to assist 250 this year. “Our beneficiaries come to us through patient navi-

gators working with our health care partners,” she says. “So many of these women don’t even realize there’s assistance out there, and many are too proud and private to ask, but it’s a need we can fill. It’s important to help them know that there’s a little financial relief out there as they go through this journey.” Sigmon-Nosach looks back on her 11-year journey and how her life has radically changed. She credits the support of her husband Mike with his ongoing support. The couple leads a fairly quiet and low-key life, except when it comes to working to raise awareness for the “unspeakable women’s cancers that are the deadliest silent killers.” “When I was diagnosed 11 years ago, my journey was just beginning. I ended up with a ruptured colon from sepsis after my surgery, was in a coma, and spent 45 days in the hospital, then I had to undergo chemo,” she said. “I lost my business in corporate gifts and it took more than three years to battle back. I figure that I lived for a reason.”

Eat fresh, shop local and reap benefits of someone else’s garden By Pamela A. Keene Don’t despair if you didn’t plant a food garden this year. Fresh-from-the-garden vegetables and fruits are abundant in late summer and Northeast Georgia is an agricultural cornucopia of farmers markets. From the granddaddy of them all, Jaemor Farms north on Ga. 365, to once-a-week downtown markets and impromptu roadside stands, local farmers provide bushels and pecks of real vineripened tomatoes, green beans, colorful and tasty squash, cucumbers, eggs right from the hen, local honey, multicolored peppers and just about anything else that grows. The freestone Georgia peaches are just coming in. It’s easy to purchase a basket or a peck, eat some fresh and freeze the extras for home-made cobbler in the dead of winter, or a yummy glaze for baked chicken. You can eat them raw right now. Or try this – half them, baste with a little melted butter and grill them cut side down, then sprinkle on a bit of brown sugar for an explode-inyour-mouth treat. Serve with ice cream or for “high cuisine” gour-

Pamela A. Keene Curb Appeal

MORE INFO: Email: pam@pamelakeene.com met experience drizzle them with a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar. You don’t have to be Betty Crocker to “put up” produce for use later in the year. To freeze peaches, first peel them using a hot-water bath for about 30 seconds, plunge them into a bowl of cold water and the skins will slip right off. Cut into slides or half them, toss them in a little Fruit Fresh to prevent discoloration, then pack loosely into freezer bags. Squeeze out excess air, put them in the freezer and you’ll have the taste of fresh peaches anytime. Be sure and label them with the date you packed them and use them before next year. Here’s a sampling of markets near Lake Lanier:

• Suwanee Farmers Market, 4 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday and 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday. Towne Center, Suwanee. Seasonal produce, baked goods, honey, beef, poultry, eggs. • Hall County Farmer’s Market, every Tuesday 6 am to sell out, every Saturday: 7 a.m. to sell out. Exit 24 off I-985 at East Crescent Dr., Gainesville. Vegetables, fruit, fresh bread, potted plants, soaps, honey, cut flowers. • Cumming/Forsyth County Farmers Market, 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday, Cumming Fairgrounds Parking Lot, Cumming. All produce and edibles grown within the county limits of Forsyth County, plus baked goods and crafts. • Flowery Branch Farmers Market, 4 to 7 p.m. every Thursday, downtown off Main Street. Small farmers, organic growers, artisans, crafters, bakers, beef, fresh eggs. • Gainesville Farmers Market, 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Friday, downtown Square, Gainesville. Seasonal produce, artisan specialties, bread, honey, jams and jellies, local craftspeople with handmade jewelry, soaps, cloth-

Farm-fresh radishes and peaches are available at local farmers’s markets.

ing, plants, herbs. • Braselton Farmers Market, 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday, 65 Frances St., Braselton. Fresh produce, canned goods, jams and jellies. Of course, check out Jaemor Farms where they grow their own peaches and sell several different varieties. In the summer, Jaemor also sells its fresh strawberry and peach ice cream, along with its ever-popular fruit fried pies. And even if you’re not into buying vegetables and fruit, the experi-

ence at Jaemor takes you back to simpler times when everyone grew their own food. So, when you can poke, pinch, touch, feel and smell the freshness of vegetables and fruits grown close to home at this time of year, why spend your money at a chain grocery store? Eat fresh and enjoy the produce that’s grown in our own backyards. Pamela A. Keene is senior writer for Lakeside News and a Hall County Master Gardener.

Land & Sea Buffet at Lanier Islands: Best of both worlds By Pamela A. Keene Friday and Saturday nights at Sidney’s Restaurant in Legacy Lodge at Lanier Islands guests can tie on the feedbag for the ultimate surf and turf meal. Whether you’re a meat-and-potatoes person or have a passion for fresh seafood, you won’t leave hungry after you experience the Land & Sea Buffet. From flaky fish and fresh wild-caught Georgia shrimp to fall-off-the-bones St. Louisstyle ribs and prime rib, the buffet literally has something for every taste. Add a chilled bar with tortellini salad or peel-and-eat shrimp, and an array of farm-fresh vegetables to make your meal complete. Typically there are several selections of fresh fish, such as rock fish or maple-seared salmon, paired with complementary sides like pimento cheddar grits. Steamed snow crab legs with drawn butter are worth filling your plate again. Sidney’s offers a cook station each night of the buffet with various featured items. Choose toppings for fresh-

cooked pasta for instance. And check out the soups made on property. Plus the Islands are known for their house-made desserts; an assortment caps off the meal. Guests can choose beverages from the full bar or a wide selection of beer and wines by the glass or bottle. Under the leadership of Executive Chef Michael Klein, the change of name from Windows to Sidney’s has proved to be a positive one. During the week Sidney’s features farmto-table appetizers, salads, entrees and vegetables, and Klein has taken the quality of the food and the service up by several notches. The Land & Sea Buffet continues through Labor Day weekend. The cost is $39.95 for adults and $19.95 for children up to age 12. MORE INFO: 770-945-8787

Chesapeake Bay is a very remarkable place in the maritime realm. A lot of preparation goes into leaving Norfolk, VA – a concise voyage plan, adequate supplies, fuel, officers and crew, all accounted for and ready for mission. Summer months off the mid Atlantic Coast are beautiful, except when storms travel up from the tropics creating some of the largest waves found in any ocean. Cape Hatteras, where the Gulf Stream turns right and races out to the deeper, colder sea, is the place and our destination. Local boaters discover what not to do while crossing to Bimini By Pamela A. Keene An open-water adventure that should have taken several hours turned into an epic tale worthy of some pretty good stories for a group of folks from Lake Lanier recently. At least they’ll have some great stories for their grandchildren. Eleven members of the Lake Lanier Ski Group set out on 10 PWCs from Lauderdale Harbor Towne Marina at first light expecting to arrive in Bimini before 9 in the morning. They had provisioned for gas to refuel and packed their clothes in dry bags to stay there a couple of nights before returning home. “Back in April, a big group of us rode all the way up to the north end of Lanier and into the Chestatee, which was about 50 or 60 miles,” said Charlie Spencer, a member of the Lake Lanier Ski Group, which maintains an active Facebook presence. “Later some of us were talking about doing another trip and someone said that if we made it the 50 or 60 miles to the north end of the lake, we could certainly cross the Gulf Stream to Bimini, which is about the same distance. So we made a

plan, checked the weather forecast and sea conditions and were on our way. What we didn’t expect – after a prediction of 2-foot seas – was the reality that the water was extremely rough and we encountered 4- to 6-foot chop, strong headwinds and a large amount of floating seaweed off the Florida coast that made us stop and clean it out of the PWCs pretty often.” But that’s not the worst of it. Spencer said that the rough seas reduced their progress from 15 to

20 miles per hour down to less than 10 mph. That extended their trip by several hours. Plus, some members of the group ran out of gas and needed to stop to refuel, but, with the rough seas and the position of the gas intake on the PWCs, refueling was difficult. “We had tested in-water refueling at the lake and it was fine, but with all the rocking and splashing in the ocean, that was nearly impossible.” The saga continues. Refueling See PWC, page 71

The Lanier group is shown near the wreck of the SS Sapona, above. Members are: Charlie Spencer (with Matt Williams riding along due to his sunken PWC), Julio Tirado, Dwight Kelly, Katie Boyle, Jonathan Mosquera, Julio Boffill, Aaron Hudson, Amye Dawson, Tommy Tran and Kristi Hale.

Canada’s Sunshine Coast is a delight in summer Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada has become a favorite destination for travelers from all over the USA. Because of so many daily flights out of Atlanta, it is especially easy for folks in the Southeast to enjoy the beauty and exciting lifestyle of this Western Canadian metropolis. Less than an hour away by car and ferry, however, a completely different world with a slower pace, warmer temperatures, friendly people and breathtaking scenery can be experienced along British Columbia’s hidden jewel ... the Sunshine Coast! Take a short drive from downtown Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay and catch a BC Ferry across a resplendent but protected bay between Bowen and Gambier Islands to the port at Langdale. From there, drive a few miles west to Gibsons Landing, and you will have arrived at one of the most livable communities in the world. This unique village is also home to Molly’s Reach, which was made famous in the popular TV Series “The Beachcombers.” The entire community is built on a ridge that seems to flow downhill through a multitude of eclectic shops and eateries into a picturesque harbor. Many of the docks are lined with colorful flowers and are filled with everything from common fishing boats to luxurious yachts. Even a “seawalk” has been constructed around the harbor to allow different views from above. The Winegarden Waterfront Park also overlooks the harbor and is usually home to a weekend market for local artisans. If one continues northwest along the shores of the Strait of Georgia on Highway 101 from Gibsons to the vicinity of Pender Harbour, the Sunshine Coast will

Just by turning your head 360 degrees, you will be enthralled by the subtleness of inlets and tributaries, plus the magnificence of the Coastal Mountains. All along this picturesque pathway, side trips to see local artists, taste mouthwatering cuisine or languish in luxurious lodgings are constantly beckoning. Many privately operated bed and breakfast style homes can be rented for a night or longer. For those who love solitude, romance, and spectacular scenery, not much could top a few days and nights at the Rockwater Secret Cove Resort in one of their Tenthouse Suites. The sunsets are fantastic! From the parking area of the resort, an elevated pathway, above the rugged terrain, winds through trees and huge boulders to suites with canvas walls and ceilings. Both the boardwalk and the canvas enclosures allow unbelievable vistas, but are constructed in such a way as not to interfere with the natural surroundings. Wonderful possibilities are encountered all along the Sunshine Coast from Gibsons to Pender Harbour ... but so much more is waiting. Bigger lift, other improvements at Aquamarina Lazy Days By Pamela A. Keene With the largest and highest boat forklift on Lake Lanier, Aquamarina Lazy Days has added a new element to its mission of customer service. “This Wiggins Marina Bull forklift is a new design that will accommodate heavier boats and life them higher than anything else on the lake,” said Rhonda Kondo, office manager at the marina. “It can lower and lift up to 12,000 pounds in a smoother process that also gives our lift

drivers more visibility as they move boats from the dry stacks to the boat well.” The marina has made other improvements over the past few months, including creating a specialized app for mobile devices that allows customers to remotely reserve time to have their boats launched and stowed. Called BoatCloud, it is available for iPhone and Android technology. Carefree Boat Club, which came to the marina about a year ago, is now located in the office.

And the interior of the marina’s office has gotten a facelift with new carpet, furniture and paint. “We’re having a very good boating season this year, getting new tenants and hiring assistant marina manager Chris Roberts,” Kondo said. “It’s obvious that the economy is coming back. And with higher lake levels and lots of sunny weekends this year, it’s been a very good year.” Kondo said that the marina is also looking for additional fulltime staff.

Good news for solar lights expansion on Lake Lanier By Pamela A. Keene By all accounts, it appears that the Lake Lanier Association’s solar lights installation program will gear back up this fall. “We have more locations in front of the Corps of Engineers for approval with several dozen more proposed,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the Lake Lanier Association. “Now that we’ve addressed the monitoring issue, I feel certain we’ll be able to proceed soon with installing more lights on hazard markers around the lake.” The association has contracted with TowBoatUS’s Lake Lanier operation to regularly monitor the lights and report outages. “We are very appreciative of both Robert Estrada and Barkley Geib for their help in this area.” The goal of the solar lights program is to provide a visual alert about hazards and shallows around the lake. So far,

the group, with the help of community volunteers and numerous lake-area businesses, has installed 121 lights. Donations are being accepted specifically for supporting and expanding the lighting program; they are being earmarked only for new light installations. To donate or for more information, visit lakelanier.org or call 770-5037757. Shore Sweep update The lake community has responded positively to the association’s new TrashOut app, usable on portable devices. Cloud said that the group has received more than 50 reports of trash to target for the Saturday, September 26, Shore Sweep event. The TrashOut app can be downloaded at no cost. It allows users to photograph and report trash areas in and around Lanier that can be added to the group’s clean up in late September.

Special master besieged by reporters, curious individuals By Jane Harrison Ralph Lancaster has had it with the media and individuals pestering him and staff for information. The special master appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee proceedings in the Florida vs Georgia lawsuit over water adamantly stated for the record that his office will not answer any more questions from reporters. And, he’s tired of hearing from people who can’t find court documents on the internet. Saying he’s been besieged with inquiries, the 85-year-old Maine attorney and veteran spe-

cial master intends to quell the curious with some court housekeeping. First he instructed technicians to make his docket more prominent on his firm’s website. The site www.pierceatwood.com/ floridavgeorgia142original contains transcripts from teleconferences, correspondence with states’ attorneys, monthly updates, and certificates of subpoenas served. Next he asked his court recorder to underscore a message to the media: “I want the record to reflect – and if they can read, they can find this out – from now

on, we will not answer any further media requests no matter what they are for.” His words appear in the transcript of the July teleconference with Georgia and Florida attorneys and the Department of Justice legal representative. In that 17 minute call, DOJ attorney Michael T. Gray asks for a 45-day extension on a deadline to produce documents to the states. Florida attorney Allen Winsor did not oppose the extension; Georgia attorney Craig Primis was reluctant to allow more time. “If the US production goes out

Monterey joins boating family at Gainesville Marina By Pamela A. Keene As of August 1, Monterey Boats are being sold at Gainesville Marina. General manager Philip Burton said that 2016 models are arriving over the next two months. “We are very excited to be the new Atlanta Monterey dealer,” Burton said. “As a family-owned business for 31 years, they’re a good line for us.”

In addition to Monterey, Gainesville Marina sells Tidewater center consoles and bay boats, Berkshire pontoon boats and South Bay pontoons, as well as Yamaha outboards. The service department handles repairs for Yamaha, Volvo and other makes. Burton said that the marina has been busy this summer, particularly with its rental fleet of pon-

toon boats. “We’ve been renting pontoons with 90- to 150horsepower outboards for four years and it continues to be a good decision for us,” he said. “It’s been a great rental season.” Gainesville Marina is located on Dawsonville Highway. It is also home to Skogie’s Restaurant.

much past 45 days, it will impact significantly or potentially significantly the expert schedule,” Primis stated. Lancaster granted the extension, but not before again admonishing the states to settle rather than continue legal action that he estimated may cost billions of dollars. Georgia has hired 50 full time attorneys to oversee evidence production and review. In earlier discussion, Lancaster noted another hold-up in procuring documents. He said he assumed Florida would work out an issue with the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Stakeholders. According to Florida’s July status

report, the private organization of water users from Georgia, Florida and Alabama has declined to turn over certain documents due to non-disclosure agreements. Winsor stated the state may seek the court’s assistance to dislodge the impasse. The legal proceedings stem from a lawsuit Florida filed in federal court in October 2013 accusing Georgia of taking more than its fair share of water from the ACF river system. It seeks to put a cap on Georgia’s water consumption, which Florida alleges has caused environmental and economic harm to the Apalachicola region.

Continued from Page 63 required getting into the water to position the gas nozzle properly. Then the group encountered a school of sharks swimming below them. “I know they were sharks, but we didn’t know what kind, and frankly that was fine with me,” Spencer said. “We were just glad that the sharks kept their distance.” Then, one PWC started taking on water and had to be towed into Bimini by a passing fishing boat. Eight hours after their early morning departure, the remaining nine PWCs and 10 passengers navigated into the Customs Dock on the island. Their three-day stay in Bimini was “party central,” he said. “We just happened to be there during the Bahamas Independence Day and it was non-stop good food and drink.” However, when it was time to head back to Fort Lauderdale, a couple of the original 11 opted to hitch a ride back

on a fishing boat rather than risk a repeat of their initial trip. They were pleasantly surprised to encounter smooth seas and light winds, making the return in about three hours. “You know, when some people heard about what we were planning, they told us they thought we’d lost our minds,” he said. “But some members of the group are planning another Bimini crossing in the summer of 2016. I can tell you this: I will not be going.” The Lake Lanier Ski Group keeps its friends and members informed of coming activities through its Facebook page, moderated by Aaron Hudson. Spencer said that they often pick a meeting spot and ride around the lake. They also assist with the annual Lake Lanier Association Shore Sweep and plan trips away from Lanier.
