“This is also the time that we begin storing water again.”

The lake, at the top of the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint basin, hit its most recent low of 1057.91 on November 14.

By Pamela A. Keene The old adage “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” may be true, but there’s no cause for alarm.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is doing prescribed burning of various public lands along the shoreline of Lake Lanier in January and February.

“Prescribed burns are a good environmental practice,” said Jeff Emmert with the Corps’ Buford Project Office. “By burning forest litter, wildlife and certain plant species can benefit and it will lessen the chance of a wildfire.”

Emmert explained that forest litter may consist of pine needles, leaves and dead trees, limbs or sticks.

The Corps will conduct the

prescribed burns throughout January and February, depending on the availability of manpower and weather conditions.

The first locations will most likely be Buford Dam Park, Little Ridge Park or Duckett Mill Campground.

Members of the Corps’ staff have undergone special training to properly conduct the prescribed burns, particularly by the Forsyth County Fire Department and its Wildland/Urban Interface Division, and by the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Emmert said that the Corps will alert the public in advance of the burns.

Last spring the lake peaked at 1072.13 on April 17, holding in the 1070s until mid-May, when summer and then fall drought conditions necessitated additional releases from Buford Dam. “The Flint River is a key player in the ACF system,” Robbins said. “Both the Flint and the Chattahoochee flow into the Apalachicola, but there’s no storage capacity on the Flint, so if the

flow is reduced in the Flint, we don’t have much choice to release in the Chattahoochee system.”

Currently, releases are being made based on Zone 3 conditions to meet downstream water supplies and water quality as well as to keep the basin flows in balance.

Since April 2011, rainfall amounts have averaged less than one inch per month in the Lanier watershed.

Tips to help save money and fish more We all hate to pay at the pump.

Currently, gasoline prices are about $3.19 per gallon and we have become conditioned to this as a normal state of affairs. Many of today’s bass rigs are powered by engines of 200 horsepower or more. While, they do provide plenty of muscle, they do use a lot of fuel. If you need to fill up your boat and tow vehicle, you can easily incur an expense that is well over $100 (with nothing left for Vienna sausages and crackers as an added insult). While I’m not against spending a little money on something I really enjoy, I’ve been known to save a buck or two. Figuring out methods to save on fishing excursions means you can afford to go more often.

Everyone likes that. One of the simplest ways to save big bucks is to fish with a partner. While most anglers understand that sharing expenses is proper etiquette, ensure you communicate properly up front to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Aside from being economical and enjoyable, this is a great way to expand your angling skills or take a lesser experienced friend to a higher level. Our fine boat ramps and facilities come at a

cost. You know the drill … shelling out a few greenbacks just before backing down the ramp each time you go. To avoid yet another draw of the billfold, consider investing in an annual launch pass. In no time at all you’ll have “paid off” the sticker fee and reap the benefits once you pass the break-even point. While on the subject of easing the boat into the lake, remember that launching near the area you plan on fishing makes all kinds of sense. Study a topographic map to find potential hot spots convenient to your launch site. If you decide to make a big move from one end of the lake to the other, it pays to tow and launch at the second destination. Your pickup truck gets much better mileage.

It’s also a lot nicer when conditions are cold, rainy, windy, or all of the above.

Maintenance saves money Save even more money by selecting one creek or tributary to fish during the course of the day.

This is tough but it can yield all sorts of rewards. Most anglers hit their favorite areas spending brief time there before making yet another (sometimes lengthy) run.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the forest because of all the trees. A slower and methodical approach will usually turn up productive spots that you never knew existed.

Put the right amount of effort into this and you’ll probably have a lot more way points saved in the GPS or marked on your map.

Even when you’re running up the creek, avoid cruising at full throttle every time. After getting on plane, back off the throttle enough to maintain this posture at a moderate cruising speed. Your wallet will thank you next time you pull up to the pump. Avoid hauling lots of unnecessary gear along to keep weight down.

Every little bit helps. Most anglers hit the lake with way more than they really need. The accumulation of gear over time can be surprising. Keep your rig well maintained. If you prefer not to take care of the basics yourself,

do take your boat to a good shop.

This is money well spent as we all know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If your batteries are not sealed system, be sure to check the water levels on a regular basis. Nearly everyone puts this one off and it’s an easy way to maximize battery life. Don’t forget the propeller. If your prop has its fair share of nicks, you should have it tuned.

Your boat will be more efficient and the engine won’t have to work as hard.

Invest in a spare Trailer maintenance is often another task that’s put on the bottom of the “things to do” list. This is about as “un-fun” as it gets.

The last thing you want on a trip is a panicky survey of the roadside for an emergency pull over with a malfunctioning trailer.

Wheel bearings are commonly forgotten in the maintenance scenario. When bearings go dry, someone is down for a roadside repair. It only took once for me to learn my lesson. Tire blow outs are the typical roadside malady.

I’m surprised by the number of boat owners who don’t invest in a spare. Leaving your rig unattended beside the highway opens

the door to all sorts of bad possibilities. By the way, I also recommend a good tamper proof hitch lock. This is cheap insurance.

Any boat represents a substantial investment that should be protected to preserve value and avoid damage. One should always keep a boat covered if not garage kept.

I recommend covers for boats kept under roof at storage facilities as well. Aside from keeping rain water out, they prevent leaf and limb debris from accumulating and decomposing in the boat.

We’ve all walked out to a boat after a period of rain and looked at sagging covers supporting heavy pools of water. This lends to short cover life as well as leakage. Proper cover technique will greatly reduce this malady. I’ve used some creative solutions but the best method is to use supports made for the purpose. Reduce leakage and you’ll also reduce a lot of mold and mildew potential.

Lots of storage space is a great boat feature. With the introduction of moisture, these become perfect places for the bad stuff to colonize. Collateral damage can extend to anything stored in a compartment. One good practice See Fishing, page 7

Continued from Page 6 is to leave lids and hatches slightly opened so that air can flow freely. Every now and then, remove the cover on a nice day and allow everything to get some fresh air.

Stock up on staples in spring That’s enough maintenance for one episode. Now let’s move on to the fun stuff. As with gasoline, the prices of quality fishing line have gone up over time.

Fluorocarbon products and braids have always been pricey compared to standard monofilament. Who wants their line at half price? My hand is raised. As line is replaced, only remove half of the old line.

Splice in the new product with a blood or double uni-knot. Fill the spool and you’ll be good to go. Store your outfits inside and away from high temperatures to add longevity to fishing line. It’s important to remember that braided line products slip at approximately half of their breaking strength. Secure these knots with a tiny bit of super glue or fishing line glue to prevent this. It’s a fact that most fishing rods get broken before the end of their service life. Broken guides and tips are the most common damages. Tip repairs are easy and so cheap that it’s not even a do it yourself. A good tackle shop will select a replacement tip and install it at no charge.

This should set you back three to four dollars at most. After the repair, avoid the temptation to twist on the tip checking for movement. Allow the glue to set for a

while. In fact, it’s best just to leave it alone. Don’t touch it unless something is very obviously wrong. Replacing guides is a bit more involved but I’ve done my share of this repair. I used to detail how to do this but in the present age an internet search will probably yield several methods that will serve you well. Anglers can save significantly by paying attention to spring sales at local tackle stores. While you can save big on that new rod or reel, you can also stock up on staples. I’m talking about the everyday and “go to” baits that you reach for time and time again. Over the long run, you’ll save the most money by taking advantage of sale prices on consumables. These are things you replace over and over again. Examples would be your favorite plastic baits, fishing line, and sinkers.

In closing, as the prices of nearly everything continue to rise, there are many things you can do to offset costs. Combine these tips for even greater leverage. The money you save today will get you back on the lake tomorrow. Until next month, be safe and enjoy the lake!

Clarity: Main lake areas are clear. Expect some color in upper tributaries following rain events.

Bass fishing has been good. Normally it’s a deep water game this time of year. While some fine catches have been made at depths of 30 feet and deeper, the shallower end of the water column continues to be very productive. This has been especially true after periods of mild and sunny days. Medium running crankbaits, and jerkbaits have all been accounting for some really good fish. Pick your favorites in baitfish colors and toss these off points in creeks as well as the pockets. Stick with standard baitfish colors. The best creeks will have shad stacked up somewhere nearby so pay close attention to your electronics as you scout. If you’re looking for productive hard baits be sure to try the Pointer DD and Stay See series by Lucky Craft. When it comes to crankbaits, Norman’s Deep Little N and Middle N are fine choices. The Strike King Pro Series is another fine pick. As mentioned, solid catches are being made in submerged timber as well as the shallows. Rely on spoons and jigs here. Use your electronics to locate stands of topped off trees near creek points. Focus on the 30-foot depth for starters. By the way, don’t forget casting plastic worms or jigs to boat docks.

They have been producing pretty consistently. If you’re striking out with other patterns, this is a classic “go to” and will usually provide action. If consistent cold weather sets in expect the shallow bite to wane as the deep bite strengthens. If we continue to enjoy unusually mild winter weather, play out the shallow bite as long as you can.

Striper fishing has also been good lately. Fish are roaming in creeks and pockets all over the lake searching for concentrations of baitfish. Find the bait stacked up and you’ll find the linesides somewhere close by. Medium size live trout, herring, or shad fished on flat lines have been accounting for a lot of fish early in the day. Look for signs of visible surface feeding and don’t forget to have a fluke type bait rigged on a lead head for blind casting and firing toward any surface swirls you might see. Later in the day, drop down lines 25 to 30 feet deep off points and submerged humps. Umbrella rigs have been hooking up with a lot of fish as well. Medium running set ups have been producing the best. On those days when you’re having trouble locating fish, U-rigs are great. You can often locate schools by trolling these and then settle down with live bait to maximize the bite. If you can get out ahead of a weather system moving through, by all means try to do so. These are periods of peak activity.

Great Southern Fishing Show set for Jan. 21-22

By Bill Vanderford With the fishing season on the horizon, it’s time to forget about bowl games, put the guns away for a while, and come down to the North Atlanta Trade Center to see what’s new and to learn from the experts!

This year’s Great Southern Fishing Show on January 21-22 is loaded with personalities from all over the globe!

One of the featured speakers is Andy Mill, who is a former downhill skiing champion and was married to tennis star Chris Evert for 18 years. Since I first met him and Chris in the Florida Keys some 10 years ago at a function for President Bush the elder, Andy has won 11 tarpon tournaments overall, including five Gold Cup events. He’s considered one of the best tarpon fly anglers in the world, and will be at the show to answer questions, give demonstrations, and sign copies of his book, “A Passion for Tarpon.”

In the past, the show has been geared mostly to just the fly fishing industry. This year, however, it will cover all forms of shallow water/light tackle fishing for all species of fresh and saltwater fishes, and that’s where I come

in!

I’ll be passing on some secrets for spin tackle anglers of all ages on The Proper Use of Spinning Tackle and Lures for Both Rivers and Lakes. I’ll also have an excellent selection of my “Bill Vanderford’s Swirleybirds” on hand.

Hopefully my good friend and famous innovator, Doug Hannon (“The Bass Professor”) will be in my booth to explain his unique WaveSpin System.

Local favorite Outdoors TV star O’Neill Williams will be on hand for seminars on Springtime Fishing for Bass and Stripers. He will also be giving away merchandise and signing autographs as well.

Listening to Henry Cowen about catching striped bass on fly fishing gear is always interesting.

He will be sharing his knowledge with show goers during several show seminars in a Yankee accent!

Probably the most prolific writer about trout fishing throughout the South is my close friend and sometimes traveling partner, Jimmy Jacobs. He is the longtime editor of Georgia Sportsman Magazine, and is author of the four most sold fishing guidebooks in the southern states.

In addition to all of these anglers, local guides and promoters like Ryan Coleman, Andy and Deb Bowen, John Rice, Ken Sturdivant, Jimmy Harris, Randy Ratliff, Jimbo Mathley, and David Edens will be present to share their fishing knowledge and skills. Triathrow to combine indoor row, swim, run

By Jane Harrison A new multisport event will debut at Riverside Military Academy Feb. 4 with the North Georgia Erg Sprint and Triathrow.

The indoor competition organized by the North Georgia Rowing Academy combines rowing on stationary rowing machines with running and swimming.

“We’re pretty stoked about this,” said NGRA Coach Jim Pickens. He expects the triathrow will draw a diverse crowd of athletes with little or no rowing experience.

A separate erg sprint is also planned.

Pickens and NGRA President Patrick Dunn said they hope the contests generate more interest in rowing and integrate more community members into the sport.

They view the triathrow as a recruiting tool that could attract high school distance runners and swimmers to rowing. They aim for 300 to 500 participants.

The triathrow “is designed for a team relay,” Dunn said. Each participant on three-member teams would either row 5 kilometers on an ergometer, run a 5K on

the RMA fieldhouse indoor track, or swim 500 yards in the RMA pool.

Athletes will compete in high school, collegiate or masters categories with three waves of start times in each category.

Each participant gets lunch and an event T-shirt. Awards will be presented to top teams in each category. A portion of the proceeds will go to support Special Olympics.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Vinson, Finlayson chosen LCKC athletes of 2011

By Jane Harrison Emily Vinson and Robert Finlayson were honored as Paddlers of the Year by the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club at its annual banquet Dec. 4.

It was the third consecutive year for Vinson to receive the award. The Gainesville native was among USA Canoe/Kayak athletes who attempted to achieve 2012 Olympic berths during qualifying regattas last spring and summer. She has been recognized as one of the most promising team boat Vinson kayakers on the USACK squad for more than five years.

Finlayson, a canoeist, also represented the U.S. in competition for Olympic slots. His versatility paddling 200, 500 and 1,000 meters in a single canoe and on team boats kept him on the water in multiple events Findlayson during national and international regattas.

The club’s accomplishments last year included its 10th USACK national championship won in August at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. More than 70 LCKC athletes competed in the national regatta, winning gold medals in 37 events. LCKC athletes competed on USACK teams in international competition in France, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Canada, Singapore and Mexico.

LLRC BRIEFS Mark Williams Ergatta commemorates LLRC charter member The Lake Lanier Rowing Club plans a local ergatta Jan. 28 in honor of charter member Mark Williams, who passed away Dec. 1. The ergatta is set for 8:30 a.m. at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue boathouse and is open to clubs and individuals interested in competing in virtual races on stationary rowing machines known as ergometers.

The event will be a small, predominately local event, according to LLRC Vice President John Ferriss. Entry fees will go toward the Mark Williams fund set up for charities chosen by the Williams family. Williams, an LLRC Athlete of the Month in April 2010, was one of the club’s charter members who worked to bring 1996 Olympic rowing competition to Lake Lanier. He told Lakeside News he considered his volunteer work during the Olympics to be one of his pivotal accomplishments. He died at age 66 after a three year battle with leukemia.

University of Va. men’s crew practicing this month The Cavaliers from the University of Virginia will head south this month for winter crew training on Lake Lanier. The Charlottesville-based men’s crew is the first collegiate team coming to the traditionally warmer waters of North Georgia for preseason practice. During their Jan. 6-15 session, Virginia athletes are expected to utilize the Lake Lanier Rowing Club’s indoor training equipment and set oars on Lanier. The Cavalier men are returning to the lake where they celebrated a record breaking season last year after beating the University of

Michigan in the final race of the American Collegiate Rowing Association championship in May. They will be preparing for their first 2012 meeting with Michigan at a scrimmage in March. The crew from Ann Arbor will leave their icy waters for spring break practice on Lanier at the end of February.

Last year more than 1,000 athletes from about 20 schools held spring break practices on Lanier in February and March. As of December, about a dozen had reservations to train between January and March. The crews contract with LLRC to use their facilities at Clarks Bridge Park and reserve rooms at area hotels.

Many are expected to compete in the March 24 John Hunter Regatta, hosted on Lake Lanier by the St. Andrew Rowing Club and Georgia Tech. Some are expected to compete again the next day in the Lanier Sprints, organized by LLRC. Many will cap off their season with a return to Lanier for the ACRA championship May 26-27.

LLRC invites prospective rowers to open practices Individuals interested in rowing are invited to indoor open practices at the Lake Lanier Rowing Club facility this winter. The LLRC training room at the Olympic Venue boathouse will be open at 6:15 p.m.

Mondays and Wednesdays for training on stationary rowing machines and other exercise equipment, according to LLRC Vice President John Ferriss.

134 plunge on balmy New Year’s Eve

By Jane Harrison Ed Myers and sons bade farewell to the old year with a timely plunge into Lake Lanier New Year’s Eve in the 15th Annual Polar Bear Plunge, organized by the Lake Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. The trio was among the last of 134 jumpers lined up on the docks at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue on a bright, mild finale to 2011.

Myers, clad in a brown robe, white beard and 2011 sash, took the celebratory dip with 11-yearold Reese, diapered as Baby New Year 2012, and 9-year-old Grey, festooned as Party Man with a fringed lampshade on his head.

The Gainesville guys shared the afternoon with warm-hearted celebrants whose smiles and giggles on the dock turned briefly into grimaces and groans when they emerged from the water.

Many took the plunge with family members and friends who dared to end the year with an exhilarating leap.

“I told them it would take their breath away,” said Reese Myers, who returned to the plank after a cold immersion last year. Al-

though the sun warmed the outside air into the upper 50s, king size jumper Joe Wolfe, from Flowery Branch, brought word from the deep: “It’s cold at 20 feet under!”

Thirteen-year jumper George Wangemann, who had hoped for a warm reception, reported the water felt like a chilly 45 degrees.

The Gainesville city councilman, who holds the record for the most jumps, led the throng after appearing first in a white chicken costume. Captain America, a 14member banner-wielding family, and the Myers boys were among those competing for the best costume prize. When all the shivering was over, the Myers’ get up won it.

“We just got this together last night,” said Ed Myers, who nearly lost his beard in the water.

The Galbraith clan of 14 held hands and splashed down together after posing with banners declaring “Happy New Year 2012.”

“This is a three year tradition … it just gets bigger and bigger,” said Shannon Galbraith, whose twin brother Shane started it off with two other family members.

Captain America, also known as Thomas Christie from Atlanta, made a huge entry with his striped and star-spangled swim

trunks underneath a shield painted on his belly. He declared a booming welcome to spectators in the grandstand and launched a triple tiered cannonball ker-plunk that won the biggest splash prize.

Jumpers warmed up in two donated hot tubs and downed hot chili, desserts, and drinks at the LCKC boathouse across the street. LCKC reported it was the largest turn-out in five years.

Some boating resolutions for the new year I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, as we did. Let’s start the year out with some resolutions that will make us better boaters.

• Always follow the rules of cruising as stated in Chapmans.

• Do your preventative maintenance on time and properly. This way you won’t be embarrassed by break downs while on the water.

• Always add fuel stabilizer to your fuel tank so ethanol won’t cause problems. All motor manufacturers recommend this. Check your engine manual.

• Have you and your crew take a safe boating course from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron.

• Get your boat inspected by one of the groups mentioned above. They will give you a sticker if you pass.

• Always watch your wake, it makes boating safer, and you could be responsible for any damage.

• Don’t hog the fuel dock or courtesy dock; other boats might be waiting.

• If you trailer your boat, make sure you don’t hog the ramp. Take your tie down straps off and load your boat before you get in the launch ramp line.

• If you ride a PWC or have a go-fast boat, stay away from fishermen or anchored boats minding their own business.

• If you go offshore file a float plan, it might save your life.

• Take a youngster or a veteran fishing or cruising.

• Always check the weather before departure.

Redneck fishing tournament In previous columns I’ve mentioned the Silver Asian Carp that are causing problems on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. They are trying to keep them from entering the Great Lakes. They deplete the natural game fish of the rivers by eating the food of the game fish. Entrepreneurs have tried using the fish for zoo food.

redneck fishing tournament. Since these fish jump when agitated the fishermen use nets and baseball bats.

The first tournament was in 2005. Five boats took 200 fish that year. As word spread the tournament got bigger. This year 5,000 people showed up with more than 200 boats. Canoe dancing I remember canoe jousting at Boy Scout Camp, where we had an eight-foot pole with boxing gloves on either end. You stood on the bow and your paddler positioned you to knock your opponent in the water. It was rough, but fun.

In canoe dancing, the canoeist sits in the middle of the canoe and tries to get the canoe to move to the beat of the music. Maybe this could be one of the competitions for Lanier’s Olympic venue. For more information, contact: www.boatingmag.com/freestylecanoe. Personally I used to use a canoe’s stealth to sneak up on fish with a fly rod using a popper for bait. It got bass every time.

Cruising alternatives Many people have asked me where I would suggest they go boating if the water level in Lanier doesn’t rise by next season. If you have a trailerable boat you can head south to Florida, and cruise the ICW or put your boat in at Jacksonville and cruise down the St. John River to Sanford, Fl. The ICW also is on the west coast of Florida with excellent cruising and no shortage of things to see and places to eat or stay overnight. The fishing is

also excellent. You could also go down to Fort Myers and travel the Okeechobee Water Way. Take the Rim Cannel around Lake Okeechobee and see old Florida, no condos. Stop at Roland Martins at Clewiston and enjoy the restaurant and marina.

Make sure you get your cruising guide while at the boat show and plan your trip. You could also cruise Georgia’s coast, which also has excellent fishing and places to stop and enjoy. To the west in Alabama you have the Tenn-Tom which goes south to the Gulf and north to the Tennessee River.

If you make plans to cruise inland make sure you get a copy of Quimby’s 2011 Cruising Guide. It covers almost 10,000 miles of water on 24 rivers and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Both recommended cruising guides have lock information, lists of marinas and restaurants.

Laura Decker update Recently the 16-year-old circumnavigator re-provisioned and performed maintenance on “Guppy” her 36’ ketch. She left Durban for her next stop, Port Elizabeth. After leaving Port Elizabeth she will travel around Africa’s southernmost tip, Cape Agulhas. She noticed large amounts of phosphorous which made “Guppy’s” wake glow at night. With the weather getting cooler penguins and seals have become more prevalent. From Cape Agulhas she headed to the Cape of Good Hope where the weather was a bit nasty. She also encountered the Volvo racing yachts enroute to Cape Town.

by Volve that use to be the Whitbread Race.

She now is in Cape Town getting “Guppy” re-provisioned again for the trip north off the western African shores and on to Gibraltar where she started her adventure.

club members have held informational meetings at the club boathouse and area schools to promote the sport to middle and high school students. At least a dozen have expressed an interest

January forecast is all over the map December proved to be a very warm month with several days of record or near record high temperatures. We ended the year, despite the robust rainfall just before Christmas, with a rainfall deficit of more than 12 inches!

With La Nina still going strong in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, the new outlook from the Climate Prediction Center is for the above average temperatures to continue. The rainfall outlook is a bit more ambiguous.

North Georgia is in an equal chance category. To our north, through much of Tennessee and North Carolina, above average rainfall is forecast. From Macon southward, below average rainfall is anticipated.

What has happened due to La Nina is that we have split flow in the jet stream.

The cold polar branch continues to meander up the the Canadian border. Last winter the polar jet was stuck deep in the South, giving us that brutally cold winter and snow. The southern branch of the jet steam, normally located near the tropics this time of year, continues to move across the southern United States. It basically runs from the desert southwest across the southeast. Many times in December we were actually south of the so-called sub tropical branch of the jet stream. That resulted in the 70 degree days in December.

This can be a dangerous scenario during the month of January. The Glenn jet stream adds an imBurns mense amount of energy and wind shear to storm Lanier systems. I am a lot more Outlook concerned for the potential of strong and severe storms this month than I am of any potential snow event. In fact, if the La Nina continues as strong as it is, snow in January may not be in the cards this year.

So with the possibility of storm and severe storms is month, I would think the main threats would be hail, high winds, and tornadoes. Yes tornadoes. They can and do occur at any time of year here. I can’t tell you how many times I have tracked and covered January tornado outbreaks. They are not as fierce as in the spring time but they can get up to the EF2 range and cause considerable damage.

So while snow may not be a good possibility this month, strong and severe storms are. If you got an iPad, iPhone or other smart phone for Christmas, there are many good severe weather apps and a few with full weather radio capabilities.

Mother Nature, Father Time dictate cruising plans Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002.

Things started out the same way for us back in 2001. The provisioning was done and every system on the boat had been checked and double-checked. It was to be our first sailing experience to the Bahamas, and we could not have been more excited.

Being novices we opted to follow the ICW route along the coast of Georgia. Gypsy Common, our 38-foot Island Packet, handled magnificently and from outward appearances she was the epitome of the finest ocean going vessel.

We had spent three years and a lot of money equipping her with the most technologically advanced systems which would ensure a safe and uneventful crossing. We soon learned that there was more to cruising than a boat and its

arrived. We anchored in Lake Worth for the duration of our stay that first year, and although we Bob & are now comfortably situated in a Carolyn marina, we find ourselves once Wilson again delayed by intensifying northerly and easterly winds, and Cruising six to eight foot seas, unable to go Wilsons anywhere.

The plan is to have the boat hauled in Green Turtle Cay to have the bottom painted, however an additional, and unexpected, short list of maintenance projects has popped up, so our holiday gift giving thus far has been, “I’ll give you a bilge pump for Christmas, and you can buy me a new air horn,” or “honey, I’ve decided to hire a crew to wax the boat for your birthday!”

All has not been doom and gloom since we moved aboard.

We have enjoyed trick or treating in Brunswick, a delicious Thanks-

giving feast at the home of close friends in Palm Beach, and spent an evening watching the annual Christmas Boat Parade wind its way along the ICW. Hopefully the weather delays will not continue and we will make it to Marsh Harbour by Christmas Eve to greet our daughter Jessica when she arrives for a week stay.

So there you have it. We have successfully managed to hold true to three tenets of cruising – be prepared to bring out another thousand, let the wind be your guide and look upon each day as a new adventure. The New Year and Mother Nature are certain to bring us good fortune before long, and while we have the time, we would like to wish each and every one of you the best of health, peace and enjoyment throughout the coming year.

50th annual Atlanta Boat Show Nation’s largest indoor wake park will feature top national riders For the first time, the 2012 Progressive Insurance Atlanta Boat Show will debut the nation’s largest indoor wake park with stunts from the country’s most accomplished riders, performing daily at the Georgia World Congress Center Jan. 12-15. Presented by Mountain Wake and Singleton Marine Group, the 200,000gallon wake park will feature wall rides, spine kickers, quarter pipes and pipe rails from top wakeboarders – a can’tmiss event for on-the-water enthusiasts and thrill-seekers.

Atlanta is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Georgia’s largest boat show with one its biggest entertainment features yet with pros from Mountain Wake, Singleton Marine Group, Liquid

Force and other top riders from across the country showcasing their award-winning tricks in a state-of-the-art, customdesigned indoor wake park. The attraction is brought together by a twotower continuous cable system that allows riders to perform multiple rotations around the park’s obstacles. The pros will compete against one another for bragging rights, hold themed performances, such as Friday the 13th Monster Jam. No race boat has ever earned a coveted spot in the American Power Boat Association’s legendary Hall of Champions — but that may change when this record-setting offshore catamaran finally hits the dry docks.

The 40-foot, turbine-powered Miss GEICO took the offshore racing scene by storm in the spring of 2006 and proceeded to demolish record after record and awe those unfortunate enough to race against her.

"I don't think the other big boats on the circuit knew what to expect," said driver Marc Granet. "Nobody had ever seen anything like it."

Miss GEICO will be on display at this year’s Atlanta Boat Show.

Lanier Striper Club’s Adopt-a-Dock program reaches Balus Creek

By Pamela A. Keene Responding to low-water levels, the Lanier Striper Club continues its Adopt-a-Dock program in conjunction with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The club recently relocated the Balus Creek courtesy dock at the boat ramp to deeper waters.

“This is part of our second phase of the Adopt-a-Dock program,” said Joe Kuhr with the Lanier Striper Club. “Phase one focused on repairing and replacing fascia boards and adding

rubber bumpers and gunnel guards to many of the courtesy docks at Corps boat ramps.”

Funding for the Adopt-aDock program comes from the club’s annual Fun Fest Striper Tournament, held each fall. Marine Specialties provided a barge to assist with the move.

Membership in the Lanier Striper Club is open; the club meets monthly.

Rewis aims for Division 1 rowing

By Jane Harrison Amber Rewis first took to water in a kayak. Now the 16-year-old Mill Creek High School sophomore is eyeing Division 1 schools for a potential rowing scholarship. She recently hit a new time standard in winter training with the North Georgia Rowing Academy and was chosen by Coach Jim Pickens as Lakeside’s January Athlete of the Month.

Background: Rewis, daughter of Crystal and Chad Arden of Buford, was paddling with the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club three years ago when she first observed rowers out on the lake. “I saw them rowing and it looked like fun, so I tried it and have stuck with it,” she said.

On the differences between kayaking and rowing: “Rowing is a lot more technical,” she said. “And it’s more of a team sport.” She explained that the graceful, uniform movement of eight or four rowers sharing a boat requires a high degree of technique and concentration. She added the sport offers a total body workout by utilizing the torso and legs in each push to propel the boat.

Why she rows: Rewis indicated the mental discipline of rowing transcends into other aspects of her life. “It’s really nice.

It’s a mind thing … it prepares you to go through things, to work together. It’s really a mental thing to push through the pain,” she said.

Her specialty: “I really like 5 (kilometer) head races,” Rewis said. She enjoys the challenge of rowing steady state with three other teammates in a boat. Rewis usually occupies the first seat of a 4+ boat.

Training: This winter, Rewis and teammates are working out five days a week in two-hour sessions of land training at Riverside Military Academy. “It’s a mix-

ture of weights, running and ergs,” she said.

Her crew expects to be out on the water at the American Legion lake access on Riverside Drive in mid-February.

Accomplishments: “I broke eight minutes (in Rewis early December) in the 2000 meters on the erg machine,” Rewis said. She also achieved first place in a double in an Aiken, S.C. regatta. In addition, she was among four NGRA athletes invited to the Sparks Winter Rowing and Coxswain Camp in San Diego last month. There, she expected to meet college coaches.

Goals: I want to row in college … I want to go for a Division 1 college,” she said.

Next competition: She will be competing in the Feb. 4 North Georgia ERG Sprints and Triathrow, a 5K erg, 5K run, and 500 yard swim at Riverside Military Academy.

She and teammates will be racing in spring sprints, including the John Hunter Regatta March 24 on Lake Lanier.

Comments from Coach Jim Pickens: The NGRA head coach describes Rewis as fitting the mold for collegiate rowing.

“She’s exceptional. She’s the tall, strong athlete every college is looking for,” Pickens said. Her December accomplishment on the ergometer set a pace that her teammates are trying to catch, he said. “She did it twice in two days … she got over the mental block and it happened,” he said.

“She’s in her third year of rowing and is still a very young lady,” he added, which bodes well toward her college ambitions.”

Pull Watersports selling family fun on the lake

By Jane Harrison Jenny and Perry Serwitz opened Pull Watersports last spring as a family venture. After a disappointing and costly online shopping excursion for a wake board for their son failed to produce what they wanted, they began thinking about starting their own store.

“We had trouble finding what we wanted, when we needed it, so we decided to do our own thing,” Jenny Serwitz said.

The result is a family-oriented shop on Keith’s Bridge Road stocked full of just about every kind of lake toy to hit the water.

From stand-up paddle boards to towable tubes and wake boards to water skateboards, Pull Watersports has the goods for fun on the lake.

“We look toward getting the recreation-oriented family out on the lake,” Perry Serwitz said.

“We’re conscious of a family budget and also of quality,” Jenny added. Shoppers include accomplished skiers looking for high end trick skis to teenagers eyeing affordable wake boards.

Although towable tubes and wake boards have been their

biggest sellers since opening day, several “growth areas” seem to be emerging, Jenny said. Stand up paddle boarding “is a sport that has really taken off. It’s a great way to get out on the lake without a boat. It’s amazingly stable.”

SUP, for short, resembles surfing with a broad board and paddle, which the boarder uses to propel and maneuver the craft on flatwater or on waves. The motion works the body’s core without exhausting the legs or arms. Pull Watersports sells and rents SUPs and has contracted with a fitness instructor who uses the craft in boot camp workouts.

Wake surf boards are also gaining popularity, Jenny said.

“You surf the wave in the back of the boat” after letting go of the tow rope. “It’s real easy on the body” and is done close to the back of the boat, where those on board can actually talk with the boarder.

If a trip to Pull Watersports has one hankering to get out on the lake before it warms up, the shop has a new product to get in some cool moves before spring. Using a Trampboard, a wake board enthusiast can get in some training on a

trampoline. Jenny shared a photo of their 10-year-old son pivoting a trampboard on the family trampoline.

The Serwitzs also offer water sport accessories (gloves, ropes, handles, wet suits) and have been known to do quick repairs on

water sport equipment brought in folks driving by their shop en route to the lake.

In addition, they stock men’s and women’s attire “for active people to wear in their boats on the water and then wear out to Sunset Cove for dinner and

drinks,” Perry said.

Drought uncovers surreal beauty on exposed shores

The eroded stump of a massive tree covered by Lake Lanier at Wahoo Park appears like a huge tarantula clinging to the shore.

A cluster of mussel shells, gathered by hand, beak or claw, rests on a rock at Thompson Bridge Park, where the wide shore is littered by thousands of shells emptied by predators.

A

t first glance, the red, rocky exposed shores of a shrunken Lake Lanier appear as an ugly image from a dry spell. But, a walk along some of the wide, barren shores at year-round parks on the drought-ridden lake can reveal an unexpected surreal beauty. In the eye of the observant beholder, the desolate rim once covered by water serves as a reminder of loveliness in the ebb and flow of nature.

Marinas offer insights, improvement updates for 2012 Lake Lanier’s marinas are looking forward to a good boating season and increased lake levels in 2012. Lakeside’s Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene talked with marina managers and compiled this report: Aqualand Marina – features 1,751 wet slips and 418 dry storage slips, offering five member launch ramps and one public ramp.

What’s your outlook for the 2012 boating season? Looking for a good season and hopefully the lake level will be back to full pool.

What makes your marina “special?” Aqualand is one of the world’s largest fresh-water inland marinas and is located on 144 acres in a natural park-like setting. We offer many amenities, including a fuel and pump-out dock, ship’s store, Lake Lanier’s only self-service repair yard, several bath houses and a laundry room. Dockside Grill Café waterfront café located in the store parking lot is a casual outdoor restaurant known for its famous hand-pattied “Docker” burgers.

The food has an AmericanCaribbean flair and is open for lunch and dinner during the season. Types of food also include varieties of salads, sandwiches, grilled chicken, seafood, wings, and a kids’ menu.

Community involvement: We support many of the marina and community events with cash donations, plus children’s wildlife programs with Elachee Nature Center on its glass-bottom boat “Chota Princess,” which is docked at Aqualand Marina.

Advice to boaters for 2012:

We always urge safe boating, but especially with the water level down watch for any underwater hazards.

What major changes, improvements are on the horizon for your marina? We’re continually upgrading throughout the entire marina. We’ll be releasing our 2012 marina rates at the Atlanta Boat Show – No increases in rates for 2012, and some rated have been reduced.

Starting this month, Lakeside on Lanier will feature a quarterly column provided by the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. It will appear the first month of each quarter.

Recent testing of the waters of Lake Lanier by the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (UCR) has indicated an excess of nutrients, a pre-cursor to possible algae blooms and reduced oxygen levels.

From spring to fall, UCR collects monthly nutrient samples at 10 locations on Lanier. In accordance with a SQAP (sampling and quality assurance plan) approved by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), UCR measures chlorophyll-a levels, which are used to determine the amount of possible algae growth in the lake. Lakes tend to collect and hold nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that may flow from sources in the watershed, including agricultural production, sewage treatment plants, septic tanks and lawn fertilizers.

If too many nutrients collect in the lake, algae may bloom and deplete oxygen levels, impacting fish and other aquatic life, recreational areas and water supplies.

The monthly monitoring program is part of UCR’s Lake Lanier Clean Water Campaign, which works to monitor and uphold the state’s water quality standards.

UCR’s 2011 monitoring showed elevated numbers beyond the water quality standard for chlorophyll-a in three locations: Brown’s Bridge, mid-lake near the confluence with Flowery Branch, and near Buford Dam. In 2010, UCR documented similar high levels at the Brown’s Bridge and mid-lake stations. These results indicate that excessive nutrients are entering the lake and confirm the need for an expedited clean-up plan. UCR is working with the Upper Chattahoochee Basin Group (UCBG), a group of municipal and utility representa-

tives and other stakeholders in the Lanier watershed, to ensure that proper action is taken to restore the lake’s water quality.

In 2008, monitoring reports resulted in adding Lanier to the EPD’s list of “impaired” or polluted waters across the state.

Clean-up plans for waterways on the list are developed with the ultimate goal removing them from the list. That same year, a state-sponsored modeling project was undertaken to understand how nutrients enter the lake and affect algae growth.

The UCBG participated in the state’s modeling work by contributing data and reviewing model results.

Using the data collected by EPD, UCR and others, along with data generated by the model, the objective is to reduce the amount of nutrients entering the lake by employing a strategic management model that tightens limits in wastewater permits, such as those for the Cornelia and Baldwin water pollution control plants. The UCR will advocate that this same model be used at Lanier.

Other strategies to reduce the amount of nutrients in the lake will target runoff from agricultural and residential land uses; a preliminary calculation of the “total maximum daily load” of nutrients in the watershed shows that substantial reductions must be made to keep Lanier clean now and in the future.

UCR will continue its lake monitoring program and advocacy for a cleaner lake through implementation of the state’s clean-up plan.

A road trip to Daytona Beach is still a blast!

Over the years, much of the old Daytona Beach area had become deteriorated, and the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 finished off many places that were barely hanging to life. Therefore, the people of the old city had choices to rebuild, abandon, or sell cheap to real estate developers with deep pockets and visions of a new and better city. Because of the costs to rebuild and the less than adequate insurance adjustments many decided to sell.

Following the hurricane devastation, the new owners along with the Daytona Beach area government agencies immediately began drafting long range plans for the rebirth of this vital coastal territory. Many historical properties were refurbished, other old places were torn down and replaced with new businesses, and still more are in the process of being rebuilt or developed.

One of the nicest places to be restored in 2007 is the Best Western Castillo Del Sol Hotel which is just over the city line in Ormond Beach. This comfortable hotel has some of the best beach and sunrise views in the Daytona area and is very close to the Daytona International Speedway. Cracker Creek is located on the original 20 acre homestead of Roland “Rollie” F. Johnson, caretaker for the James Gamble Estate (Proctor and Gamble). Another historic site that must be experienced when visiting Daytona Beach is the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse and Museum.

Completed in 1887, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station was built when the area was known as Mosquito Inlet. After decades of restoration by the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association, it stands today as one of the best preserved, most complete Light Stations in the nation.

The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998. Wildlife Resources Division protects North Georgia’s playgrounds Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. The 18-year state ranger with the Wildlife Resources Division of Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources never knows what his next call might bring. Nor do his co-workers at the Region II office in Gainesville, where a small staff sheriffs north Georgia’s wild lands and waters from its northeastern mountains to the trout streams at the Alabama line.

Whether it’s a call about a bear roaming Gainesville neighborhoods or a plea for help locating a missing hiker, the 56-member team headquartered at the office up a hill east of the Jerry D. Jackson Bridge (near Gainesville Marina) stands ready for duty.

In the warm months, Lake Lanier demands their lake rangers’ utmost on the water; when the weather cools, their focus shifts to the woods.

On a particular December morning, Burgamy’s caller, an acquaintance who reached him on his personal cell phone, reported an injured deer near a pawn shop on Atlanta Highway. “I’ll be there soon,” he said. Moments later he asked a visitor who signed a release form to accompany him in his DNR truck if she could stomach the potential outcome of the dispatch – a mercy killing of a severely injured animal.

logged in on his computer assisted dispatch system, and set out to check on the deer. He found it, legs bent under it, resting in thick weeds in a ditch beside a chain link fence just off the roadside. Burgamy disembarked to inspect it. It held its head erect, its large brown eyes focused on the uniformed officer wielding a scoped rifle. When Burgamy turned to move his truck to a safer position, the deer roused and scampered into the brush. The ranger’s attempt to find it was unsuccessful.

“This is very common after a deer has been injured by a vehicle … I would rather it have a fighting chance if it can make it,” Burgamy said. Satisfied that the deer would not cause a traffic hazard and or suffer to death, Burgamy departed. He would not be hauling venison for a needy family or a homeless shelter that day.

Passersby who saw Burgamy on the roadside may have pondered why the ranger who checked their life jackets on Lanier last summer was trouncing through the brush this winter.

Burgamy, the DNR supervisor for Lanier, wears many hats, as do his co-workers. They are the boots in the woods and eyes on the water of North Georgia’s vast outdoor playground, where each change of season brings a new job description. And, most say they love their work, despite laboring on holidays and weekends and occasionally pulling 14-hour shifts.

Each covers a different set of North Georgia counties, with the largest section, fisheries, flowing clear to Alabama on Georgia lakes and trout streams. The staff responds when wildlife comes calling where it’s feared or not wanted. “A lot of people call and report things,” Riddleberger said. His section sought a wandering bear on Gainesville’s Green Street last year and advised Riverside Drive residents about handing the urban deer population in their neighborhood.

Fish by the millions Twenty-six year DNR employee Jeff Durniak, Regional Fisheries Supervisor, said his section samples, stocks, improves fish habitat and provides information related to streams and lakes in Durniak 38 counties across North Georgia. His staff releases about a million trout a year from four hatcheries so anglers wading in mountain streams or casting into the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta might feel a tug on their lines. One morning last month, his team loaded up about 12,000 channel catfish from a DNR South Georgia hatchery to stock in 17 small North Georgia lakes so children can get the thrill of their first catch in fishing events next spring.

Fisheries rangers gauge fish abundance and size using electric shock units on boats or backpacks to stun fish to be measured and weighed. Durniak explained regular sampling enables his office to keep an “index of abundance and watch trends and get a good feel for what’s going on” with fish population.

Durniak said his goals, like that of others in the division, are for people to “go out and have a good time” and to “get involved conserving clean water and woods for the next generation.”

The line of duty takes wildlife resources officers into Georgia’s remote areas, places that field sergeant Johnny Johnson has entered with bravery and occasional artistry. In his 24 years with DNR, the division’s canine trainer has tracked fugitives and trespassers, found controlled substances in public forests, rescued a woman and her horse from Winding Stair Gap, and lured a poacher with a white feathered turkey he painted black.

“The criminal element seeks what they believe are remote areas … that’s where we work,” Johnson said.

Region Supervisor Padgett said he sees each day at the Gainesville office as an adventure. “It’s a great career; I love to come to work every day. It’s the best office in the world,” he said, and it operates 365 days a year to protect and conserve Georgia’s wild and beautiful playground.

Great ideas never come about because you want them to. Instead, they happen because you will them to happen in a crisis. At least, that’s how it happened to me.

And now I’m a genius.

My great idea had a humble beginning – my wife sent me on an errand to the grocery store. At the time, I was comfortably fused to the couch randomly flipping channels between 12 different college football games.

My wife calls it mindless laziness. I call it an art form.

Icy chill for a good cause: take a plunge for Special Olympics

By Pamela A. Keene The theme is “Freezin’ for a Reason,” and there’s no doubt that the men and women in blue will have chattering teeth on Saturday, February 18, for the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge at Lake Lanier.

They’ll be part of a national movement to support Special Olympics, augmenting the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run pro-

gram.

The event will be held at Sunset Cove at LanierWorld. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the public. Participants raise money through pledges, committing to take a cool swim in Lanier.

People are encouraged to compete in the 1 p.m. costume contest before the big plunge at 2 p.m.

A word about cold weather The lake is colder than you think in the winter. In fact, the water temperature is currently hovering in the low 50s. While an air temperature of 50 degrees seems chilly, when water is this cold, it can literally take your breath away.

Statistically, an average swimmer has only a 50/50 chance of swimming 50 yards in 50-degree water. Hypothermia can be deadly and it can quickly affect your judgment and ability to survive.

Always wear your life jacket when boating in the winter. If you’re coming to the lake, let

someone know exactly where you’re going, how long you’ll be there and when to expect you to return home.

Additionally, keep your cell phone or a two-way radio with you to use in case of an emergency. Remember to take phone numbers of the local boat towing services or friends who can help bring you back to shore if your boat’s motor quits working.

Use the winter to prepare for your fun when the weather warms up. By getting ready now, armed with safety supplies, equipment, trailering experience and a head full of knowledge, you’ll have much more fun when warmer temperatures and cabin fever call you out to the lake.

Lake Lanier Association remodels office

By Jane Harrison The Lake Lanier Association has refurbished its headquarters in Gainesville, upgrading a storage facility into a professional office space. Using private donations and volunteer labor, the organization that advocates for a clean and full lake transformed its small, rented space on Oak Street into a more conducive venue for meetings with public officials, tourism representatives and other entities with lake interests.

“It gives us a better position to conduct business,” said LLA Executive Director Joanna Cloud.

The non-profit organization which started in 1966 in a founding member’s home has leased the space in the North Georgia Community Foundation building since 2002, Cloud said.

The recent renovation replaced a sagging bookshelf and makeshift furnishings with tables, lamps, chairs, maps of Lanier and a unique retro wall hanging that captures the allure of boating.

Cloud said the she was especially pleased with the low budget remake, which included chairs bought for $4 at a thrift shop and reupholstered for a modern look.

and LLA members store documents and have meetings. Cloud said she works in the office about six hours a week retrieving “tons of correspondence” and filing paperwork containing legal documents and lake statistics. She and members also meet there with representatives from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, chambers of commerce, lake merchants and community organizations.

The new look is “more professional” and portrays the organization as a “legitimate business entity,” Cloud said. The mission of the 3,000 member LLA is to protect Lake Lanier and its watershed to enhance its economic value to Georgia and quality of life for those who use the lake.
