Vol. 20 Issue 7
INSIDE THIS ISSUE Marina proposed at park site The prospect of a Hall County lease of Bolding Mill Park will not detour the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from seeking marina proposals for the Lake Lanier park. A group opposing the potential marina vows it will be a “thorn in the side” of any developer who bids on the project. Page 41

Exciting White County It would take a book to reveal even half of the diverse entertainment opportunities available in nearby White County, but the first consideration should be a base of operations with great accommodations. A worker has a bird’s eye view of Lake Lanier while working to upgrade power lines beside Thompson Bridge near Gainesville. The Dawsonville to Gainesville line has been in operation since before the lake was created, according to Georgia Transmission Corporation’s public affairs director Craig Heighton. Replacing the old wooden “H” poles with steel poles will “help ensure reliability in the area,” he said.

By Pamela A. Keene Three non-stop days of fun on the water will benefit two Georgia children’s charities – Camp Sunshine and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County – as the 6th Annual Pirates of Lanier Poker Run returns to Lake Lanier on the weekend of July 17-20. And the grand prize winner with the best poker hand will walk away with a $5,000 cash prize. Lanier Partners, organizers of the nation’s largest charity poker run, have brought back popular activities and added new events to the mix to make this year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run the best ever. “Our goal this year is to raise $400,000 for our children’s charities,” said Lanier Partners President John Woodruff. “With the number of boats already signed up and so many loyal sponsors, we are looking forward to an excellent event.” This year, there will be seven card stops: Holiday Marina, Port Royale Marina, Gainesville Marina, Hideaway Bay Marina, Aqualand Marina, Habersham Pointe and Lazy Days Marina. Participants only need five cards to compete. Registration is $200 for two poker hands, two T-shirts,
an event DVD and two people on the same boat. Super Deluxe registration is $300 for four poker hands, four T-shirts, an event DVD and four people on the same boat. There is no charge for additional crew; however, extra poker hands may be purchased for $50 each, no limit. New this year, the group is presenting a Treasure Hunt, a chance for land-lubbers to participate for a $5,000 cash bounty, winner take all. Treasure maps may be purchased online for $200 each. Visit at least five locations – there are 11 total – to make up your best five-card poker hand. Visit the website for complete rules at www.piratesoflanier.com. On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., there’s a special lunch stop at Fish Tales Lakeside Grille at Hideaway Bay. Tickets for the buffet-style event are $15 per person and may be purchased on site. Fish Tales’ front lawn will feature live entertainment. Here’s the schedule of events for the weekend: • Thursday, July 17, 6 to 10 p.m., Meet and Greet at Gianni’s, Lake Lanier Islands Resort; Treasure Hunt begins • Friday, July 18, 11:30 a.m.
to 3 p.m., “Cheeseburger in Paradise” Raft Up on the lake, donated by Norman’s Landing • Friday, July 18, noon until 10 p.m., registration at the Grand Hall, Lake Lanier Islands Resort, including Mandatory “Captains’ Meeting” (8 p.m.), Event Auction and “Welcome Party” at the Grand Hall, Lake Lanier Islands Resort • Saturday, July 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Poker Run on the lake • Saturday, July 19, 11 a.m. to
3 p.m., Fish Tales Lunch Stop and Entertainment • Saturday, July 19, 4 to midnight, Card playing in the “Casino” (4 to 9 p.m.), Afterevent Party, fireworks and Awards Ceremony, Sunset Cove, Lake Lanier Islands Resort. Registration is limited to 300 boats. MORE INFO: www.piratesoflanier.com

Brush piles are key for bass fishing summer success It’s no secret that a key to successful summer bass fishing on Lake Lanier is understanding man made brush piles. In our fishery dominated by spotted bass, finding and fishing deep brush is actually a staple technique nearly year round. This sub species of the black bass family gravitates to deeper water and the presence of good cover can cause large schools to congregate in a relatively small area. Find the right brush pile and the result can be a fishing bonanza that has to be experienced in order to be believed. Brush means different things to different people. One angler I knew spoke frequently about fishing brush piles. It turns out he was talking about blow downs on steep banks. When I showed him what I meant by deep brush piles it changed his fishing habits in a big way. These come in all sizes and shapes. I’ve fished brush piles where good catches were the norm on most outings. I’ve also fished those that look really good but give up a fish or two without much reliability. Two themes most hot brush piles have in common are seasonally appropriate water depth and structure adjacency. While good water depth
Tommy Wilkinson Casting Lanier
can vary, 25 to 40 feet is a pretty solid range to focus on. During transition periods shallower cover at about 15 feet or so will hold fish but most migrate to deeper water when summer weather establishes a thermocline in the water column. Typically, the areas where bottom changes are sharper and more pronounced are attractive to gamefish. This gives easy access from shallow to deep water. If a point or submerged hump has a steeper side, this is area to focus your initial effort on. Points extending out into the lake will often be used as migration routes. If you’re interested in establishing man made brush piles be sure to contact the Corps of Engineers for rules and regulations. It could be an understatement to say that there are probably hundreds of brush piles in Lanier. If a point looks good
the odds are excellent that somewhere on it there’s a brush pile. While these can be good, the very best ones are usually more obscure. Conduct map recon for efficiency Finding the fish magnets on most pieces of structure is fairly easy. The obscure places require a little more research. You’ll need a lake map, a fine point pen that works on the map, a couple of marker buoys, and a depth finder. High end depth finders are truly remarkable tools but if you’re using simpler technology don’t sweat it. They all detect brush piles; the most important thing is in knowing how to interpret the data your unit is showing. If you have a choice of map brands, always choose the one with the smallest contour interval. This will give you greater detail. A good map reconnaissance will allow you to plan a more efficient search. Atlantic Mapping Incorporated produces a quality product available in this area. When searching for new brush piles, it’s more efficient to idle with the outboard motor so plan on scouting out half a dozen before you return to the first one with fish

catching in mind. If you only have one depth finder, mount it on the bow with the transducer attached to the lower unit of the electric motor. You’ll find just as many brush piles but it won’t be quite as fast. Search underwater real estate using a zig-zag pattern. Drop a marker buoy when the brush pile begins to scroll across the screen. I prefer the “H” shaped buoys to those with round spindles because the wide center allows for a faster wind up of line. After you mark the spot, shut the outboard down and take a survey using your electric motor. Now you’re looking for details of size and nearby depth changes. If your unit is GPS capable, this is a good time to save the location. If you’re not GPS equipped don’t worry. An old school method called triangulation has been around a long time and it will allow you to quickly get back on a spot even quite a distance off shore. It relies on two reference points roughly 90 degrees apart and a known depth. Pick two distinct shoreline features; these can be homes, trees, docks, or anything easy to remember along with the depth of the brush pile. By aligning your points and keep-
ing an eye on your sonar, you can quickly return to your hot spot. Notes on your map are helpful for this. I recommend making depth notations as if the lake is at full pool and adjusting when you fish taking the actual lake level into account. A difference of five feet in depth can throw you off target by a significant distance in some places. Show them a swim bait OK, you’ve located half a dozen really good looking brush piles. Now it’s time to see if anyone is home. Several different approaches will get the job done. This time of year I recommend you resist the urge to start fishing near the brush itself right away. A large lure presented on or near the surface can cause some of the biggest bass present to charge up from the depths for what appears to be an injured baitfish. Stop shy of your target where a long cast will over reach the submerged brush pile by 10 or 15 yards. Have a rod rigged up with your favorite swim bait or topwater plug. Retrieve these over and near the hot zone. Don’t spend a lot of time working these over any one brush pile but do make several See Fishing, page 11

Lanier Fishing Report
Continued from Page 10 casts over each spot prior to approaching. Some guys win tournaments doing this. When you actually fish the brush a vertical presentation is a sound choice. If you’re not glued to a screen with GPS location, drop your marker buoy several yards to the side. Straight tail finesse type plastic baits are most commonly used to tempt spotted bass in the brush. Local favorites are the Finesse Worm by Zoom and the Houdini Worm by Yum. Robo Worms are also sold locally and have a cult like following. Your favorite shade of green will probably work just fine. Pick a color you have confidence in and fish it hard. Rig this “shakey head” style which means “weedless on a specialty lead head.” A lead head weight of 3/16th ounce is a good choice. Ensure the body is straight with no kinks. Drop the bait all the way to the bottom in and around the brush. Keeping the slack barely out of the line, impart a subtle shaking motion with the rod tip. Remember to punctuate the action with pauses and that often less motion is better than more. Sometimes fish hold just over the top of a brush pile; good sonar units will identify this. When you spot them, reel the worm up and try a presentation at the same level. I’ve seen this work well when bumping the bottom fails to pay off. Get lively with live bait If just catching a whole bunch of fish
sounds like fun that has to be had, break out the live bait. When using these techniques, remember that catch and release is important to maintain the quality of our fisheries. Dropping a live shad or spot tail shiner down beside a brush pile is sure to draw an immediate strike from any predator fish in the area. You’ll catch bass, small linesides, catfish, and more. While you can buy shad or smaller herring at some bait shops, the quantity you’ll need makes it cost prohibitive. Gathering the bait in numbers is a do it yourself project. Spot tail shiners are the most convenient because they are hardy enough not to require a bait tank for survival. A live well or larger aerated bait bucket will accommodate a number of spot tails nicely. Look for these baitfish in the shallows near sandy shorelines. Simply beach the boat and toss a handful of bread or cracker crumbs in the water. They typically make their presence known immediately as a school swarms the crumbs. To catch them use very small hooks baited with tiny dough balls. I’ve had the best success with size number 14 hooks used for tying trout flies. Fresh bread will help your catch rate because it holds together better. Simply drop your dough ball into the swarming school and keep a sharp eye on it. You’ll quickly notice these little guys are lightning fast. See Fishing, page 12
Lake level: Just over 1071 or about full pool. Surface Temp: High 70s. Summer is here. Clarity: Normal. Clear in main lake areas with light color in upper tributaries. Bass fishing is good and the bite is solid. As you might suspect from this month’s article, fish have gravitated to the brush. Be prepared for topwater action off points and humps early and late in the day. A medium size topwater plug such as the Chug Bug or your favorite will get a lot of attention from surface feeders. As always, keep two rods rigged for fast action. If Murphy pays a visit, drop his rod and grab the backup. It doesn’t have to be a topwater. A half ounce Rooster Tail cast into the action will get hammered. Or, go old school with a popping cork and baitfish imitating fly. Don’t forget to keep a swim bait or larger topwater plug tied on for casting over brush piles. This technique is working and will often elicit strikes from the larger bass in the school. After you play this out with or without strikes, move in on the brush and probe with your favorite finesse style worm rigged “shakey” style on a specialty lead head. These are common today but I cling to the “specialty” moniker because a newcomer can choose the wrong style which would be best suited for plastic grubs. Expect this pattern to continue like a broken record for the next month or so. Having said that, it could be fun to explore cover in the coves and pockets very early or late in the day with a buzz bait. Make it come into contact with objects as much as possible. Striper fishing has also been good and dependable. Down rods baited with lively herring will get the attention of hungry linesides. If you don’t have a good (meaning big and $200-plus) aerated bait tank which is a prerequisite to using herring, go old school (again) with large shiners. You can also use small to medium size bluegill (a.k.a. bream) that you catch yourself. Stripers still eat them. Park off creek mouth points or main lake points over 60 to 75 feet of water and drop baits down to 30 or 35 feet. If you spot fish deeper on your graph, it can pay to drop down to just above that level. Just be aware of any submerged timber that can quickly foil your efforts and bring snags to every rod with deep bait. So, keep an eye on the graph. It’s time to break out the umbrella rigs and lead core outfits. Trolling can be a highly effective tactic if you’re striking out with live bait. When it comes to the U-Rig think about rigging with one ounce baitfish imitating bucktail jigs or shad bodies. If you’re trolling lead core with a single jig, go with a one and a half ounce weight trailed behind eight to nine colors of line. This typical summer pattern should also remain solid over the next month or so.

Assessor’s office working on appeals By Jane Harrison The Hall County Tax Assessor’s office expected to begin onsite inspections of property appraisals submitted for appeals the first week this month. Chief Appraiser Steve Watson reported about 10 days before the June 30 deadline that his office had received 1,650 appeals on all classes of property addressed in notices mailed out May 16. This compares with a total of about 2,700 last year. The appeals include grievances of lakefront property owners with reassessed property values, including boat docks, that are much higher than they expected. The reappraisals have caused an outcry from shore dwellers who claim they were singled out this year. Close to 7,000 lakefront properties were reassessed for the first time in many years and their valuation adjusted to reflect potential fair market value. The appeal form allows property owners to choose one of four options for review. Watson said most chose to have their appraisal reviewed by the Board of Equalization. The BOE is an independ-
ent review board whose members are selected by the Grand Jury when there is a vacancy and paid a nominal fee. The Georgia Department of Revenue website explains what to expect after a property owner chooses to have a BOE review: The county board of assessors reviews each appeal and may change the assessment and send a new notice. The property owner may appeal the assessment in the amended notice within 30 days. This second appeal made (by) the property owner or any initial appeal which is not amended by the board of assessors is automatically forwarded to the BOE. A hearing is scheduled and conducted and the BOE renders its decision at the conclusion of the hearing. If the taxpayer is still dissatisfied, an appeal to Superior Court may be made. Watson said his staff began working on appeals as they came in. He added he will not need additional staff to handle demand. “The staff we have is more than adequate … You don't do this sort of thing without a significant amount of pre-planning.” Georgia
Mass Appraisal Solutions and Services, contracted by the county to conduct the original reappraisals, is assisting with appeal review. Many lakefront property owners cried foul and threatened lawsuits in letters to the media, internet campaigns, and county tax public hearings after receiving notices their property values were reassessed at higher values. Watson emphasized in an email to Lakeside News that lake front properties were “not singled out; they were just included in the process.” “Lake front property has been severely undervalued” after years without timely reviews, he said. “For whatever reason, previous leadership chose not to update lake front property even though all other classes of properties were getting updated. What we’re paying for now is the failure to keep lake front properties in line with the market in the past.” He added that other properties have already been reviewed in prior years and were also reviewed for this year. Continued from Page 11 When a spot tail grabs the bait, just yank it out of the water. Try to get at least twenty shiners per angler for starters. You’ll be really surprised how fast you go through these; nearly every one equals a strike. If you opt for shad, one advantage is that multitudes can be caught with a cast net. You will need a large capacity bait tank to keep them in good shape however. To find schools of shad, scout the shallows in the very upper reaches of creeks and look for telltale dimples on the surface. When rigging live baitfish slide a half ounce sinker up the line before tying in a barrel swivel. Attach a two foot leader to the terminal end. Use a leader that tests at least a couple of pounds less in breaking strength than your main line. When break offs occur this will save you time and money. To the leader end, tie on a circle style hook in the appropriate size for the bait you’re using. Hook baitfish gently through the nostril cartilage and suspend them two or three feet from the bottom off to the sides

of brush piles. When you feel a fish attacking the bait, simply start reeling and the circle hook will usually catch in the corner of the mouth. Live bait fishing can be a great way to get the whole family hooked on the sport. It’s worth mentioning that people would be surprised at how many brush piles are located off points in parks all around the lake. If you’re fishing from the bank try casting in these areas. Many brush piles are within reach. Instead of fishing vertically, you’ll be casting a swim bait over the cover or crawl-
ing a plastic bait through the cover. Once you identify these, you can even fish live baits over them using a slip bobber rig. In closing, it’s no secret that fishing deep brush piles can put a lot of fish on your line especially during the hottest months. They can be real gold mines for bass. I hope you’ll go out there and strike it rich! Tommy Wilkinson is a veteran of the fishing industry and resides in Jefferson, GA. MORE INFO: thwilkinson6@gmail.com

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Try summer fun at the LLOV Boathouse By Jane Harrison Ever thought “I bet I can do that!” when you see a stand up paddle boarder gracefully stroking across Lake Lanier? You can find out this summer at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue, where SUP boards, canoes, and kayaks, and rowing shells are all part of summer fun at the boathouse. On weekends, the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club provides 1-2 hour rentals on paddle craft. An LCKC member will outfit you in a life jacket, take the vessel to the dock, give you brief instructions, and help get you situated on the water. Some folks find the most difficult part of SUP boarding is simply standing up after balancing on all fours on the 2?-3 feet wide board. After getting up, it’s surprisingly easy to propel yourself with the long paddle, especially in calm water near the boathouse. Get hot or tired of standing? Just carefully settle down on the wide board and dip your feet in the water. But then, there’s the matter of getting back up! SUP boarding is just one activity to try at the boathouse this summer. USACK Championship set for Olympic venue By Jane Harrison About 350 of the nation’s best sprint flatwater paddlers will race in the USA Canoe/Kayak National Championship July 31-Aug. 3 at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. The event, hosted by the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, is returning to LLOV for the eighth time. The host team expects to put 70 to 80 of its athletes into boats in the sprint and masters championships. “It is a great opportunity to be able to host the Nationals at our home venue,” said Lee Cole, LCKC president and championship coordinator. “It offers the affordability for more LCKC paddlers to participate and their families to be able to attend. The paddling community is quite small in the U.S. and it brings old friends back to Lanier, and opportunities to form new friendships with paddlers and their families from around the country. It is such a great venue and everyone loves to race at Lanier.” The local club aims to reclaim the championship crown after losing its 10 year reign in 2011. “It will take a lot of hard work as there are several very competitive clubs in the U.S.,” Cole said. Those include the Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Race Team which will be striving for its third consecutive team title. The Washington-based team first won in Oklahoma City in 2012 and followed up with a trophy
last year on its home waters. LCKC achieved its last championship victory at LLOV and expects having the event back home will enable more of its athletes to participate. The club’s ranks have swollen this year with a “big group of young athletes that are training very hard this summer with the goal of claiming the national championship,” Cole said. LCKC needs about 100 volunteers per day to run a smooth event. “We need volunteers in non-official positions, such as in safety boats on water, helping in boat control to dry boats and carry boats, help on the venue with clean-up, boat holders, help with food service for volunteers and officials, runners to help post results. We try to split some positions into morning and afternoon shifts,” Cole said. Volunteers receive a free lunch and commemorative tshirt. Contact LCKC at 770-287-7888 or nationals@lckc.org to volunteer. LCKC will also allow spectators to rent kayaks to tour the course during practices before the races begin. An awards banquet is planned for Saturday evening, Aug. 2 at the Gainesville Civic Center. National championship team awards and club trophies will be presented. See USACK, page 17

Inattention and improper lookout are major factors in accidents The U. S. Coast Guard recently released their 2013 Boating Accident Statistics report and it revealed some stunning information. In the table listing the 30 “Contributing Factors to Boating Accidents,” No. 1 was “Operator Inattention” and No. 2 was “Improper Lookout.” Another interesting stat: “Alcohol Use” was No. 5. There were a total of 4,062 accidents reported, with 567 were due to Operator Inattention and 396 were due to Improper Lookout. Combined, these two factors represented 24 percent of the total number of accidents. Injuries caused by the top two contributing factors also represented 24 percent of the total injuries. These numbers should make us ask ourselves “just what is a “proper lookout,” while “operator inattention” is easier to define. In the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s monthly safe boating courses offered at our Operations Center at Lake Lanier, we discuss these two topics in detail. If you visualize yourself at the wheel on the starboard (right) side of the boat, you have a clear view ahead

and to your right as well, but you don’t have a good view off the port (left) side of your vessel. That’s the area where your “lookout” is needed.
Contacting USCGA in an emergency on Lanier The USCGA Operations Center with watch stander is open from mid-May through September, weekends and holidays, from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m., and can be reached by VHF/FM marine radio on Channel 16 or by cell phone by calling 770-967-2322.
AQUAMARINA LAZY DAYS
If you are boating alone, you’ve got to provide both “lookout” and “operator’s full attention” duties. You simply cannot afford to be fiddling around with your radio, GPS, radar, looking aft talking with your passengers, petting your dog, etc., while underway at speed. When the Auxiliary is underway performing a safety patrol, regatta patrol or search and rescue mission, the Coast Guard requires a certain number of crew depending on the size of
the patrol boat. One of that crew has the responsibility as “lookout.” The next time you leave the boat ramp or slip, please keep these factors in mind. We have case after case every year on Lake Lanier where these two factors play major roles in recreational boating accidents. Please don’t become one of these statistics. It’s a problem that has an easy fix and it doesn’t cost a dime.

July 2014
Crazy crossing and college champs Back when I was selling and brokering yachts, my neighbor told me about a new yacht that was new to the market. It was called Carri-Craft. It had a catamaran hull with twin Lehman diesels and Genset. The layout below was similar to today’s houseboats, but with an upper enclosed command bridge. The yacht was certainly unique and interesting. They were built in Berlin, WI on a floating assembly line. At the end of the line they were floated on a custom made trailer and delivered. About six months later and after my neighbor purchased a 45’ model, I was at the Chicago Boat Show, held at McCormick Place. It was the middle of winter, and the windy city was cold. While inspecting all the new boats I came upon the Carri-Craft booth and they had catalogs on their new 57’ yacht. It looked interesting and extremely roomy and convenient. One of the salesmen came up and started to point out all the benefits of the new 57footer and then he said “Do you want to take a demonstration ride? We’ve got one ready to go down in the harbor.” I said “You’ve got to be kidding it’s the middle of winter and ice is on Lake Michigan.” He said “No, I’m not kidding.” I said “Let’s go.” We got on board and there were several clients preparing for the cold sea trial, one was from Surinam. I’m sure he thought we were all crazy. The sea trial went well. The interior and the enclosed command bridge were warm and cozy. One of the people on board had just retired from the J. Walter Thompson Advertising company where his account was Uncle Ben’s Rice. He said he was getting Carri-Craft’s Florida sales and would be bringing two 57footers down the Mississippi and then across to Clearwater. I went back to Clearwater and didn’t think much more about it until I got a call that two Captains were needed to bring two 57’ CarriCrafts from New Orleans to Clearwater. So, fellow Captain Tuffey Parker and I were off to New Orleans for the delivery trip. We arrived at the marina and the owner who had been on the ice breaking sea trial said Tuffey would Captain the boat he and his family were on and I would take the other one. The owner hired a Captain’s mate to help me for the
Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments
trip. Being Cajun Tuffey immediately nicknamed him “Frenchy.” I figured he could handle the job. The next morning after we had checked the boats and warmed up the engines and were about to cast our lines and get underway, I couldn’t find “Frenchy.” I went below and found him seated in the galley with a bottle of scotch. I explained that was a no-no and got rid of the scotch. It was rough in the Gulf so we decided to take the I.C.W. and hope it calmed down the next day. Somewhere in Mississippi or Alabama we passed a tug pushing a barge and it picked up some flotsam from the bottom and sheared my outboard rudder off. We weren’t taking on any water and the engines were OK, so we reduced speed and proceeded to Pensacola. The owner called the factory and had a rudder and parts air shipped. Tuffey was in the engine room to pull the bolts through and I was treading water pushing the rudder in place. A situation like this is why you have dowels and tapered wooden bungs on board. When the bolts go you use them to retain watertight integrity. We also had a boating magazine writer traveling with us. He was getting a little restless because of the repair delay. We stopped at Apalachicola that night and feasted on great seafood. The Gulf was still rough and we decided to proceed to Carrabelle and make our crossing from there. A 57’ Chris-Craft Constellation was moored next to us in Apalachicola and the writer jumped ship and decided to cross the Gulf to Clearwater with him. He later said he had never been so sick and the salon furniture was flying back and forth and breaking up. He also said it would probably be his last crossing. We arrived in Carrabelle and anticipated an early morning start to our crossing. Tuffey said, “You lead the next morning.” I was going to check and see if it had calmed down. “Frenchy” was at the helm when he realized how
rough it was. He tried to turn around in the channel and almost broached the boat. I grabbed the helm, went out in the rough Gulf turned around and went back to the marina. We decided the next day would be a safe crossing. The Gulf calmed and we decided on a night crossing. Tuffey and I decided we would run parallel 75 to 100 yards abeam. I took the first watch while Frenchy rested (like he really needed it). Tuffey created the entertainment talking with the Campeche shrimpers, telling them how great their girlfriends were. It kept me from seeing ghost ships. I let Frenchy take a late night watch, and I went below. Several hours later I took over the helm and Tuffey was several miles to starboard. Seems Frenchy is a shallow water sailor and was trying to get closer to shore. I corrected and we made the rest of the trip with no surprises. We hadn’t secured our lines well when Frenchy took off. Four or five weeks later a large ChrisCraft ran aground entering Clearwater Bay. Who was the Captain? You guessed it, “Frenchy.” I must confess, on the many deliveries myself and other Captains have made, we found the Gulf rough so we could follow the I.C.W. and stop at ports with great seafood. The boats got there OK with well-fed Captains and crew. UGA fishing champs In the last year or two I’ve hit on topics of high school and college fishing tournaments. UGA’s Byron Kenney from Griffin, GA and Will Treadwell from Buford, GA showed them how it’s done two times. They won the FLWSEC College Tournament at Guntersville Lake in Alabama, and the Boat U.S. College Championship at Pickwick Lake, Ala. At the Boat U.S. College Tournament they landed 10 bass weighing 49.84 pounds. This was almost four pounds more than the second place team from Tennessee Tech. I’m sure we will be hearing from these fishermen in the future tournaments. Congratulations guys. Take some kids or a veteran fishing this summer. Be courteous, practice safe boating and I’ll see you on the water. Mike Rudderham is a veteran marine surveyor with more than 40 years experience in the marine industry.

When sunglasses fog up, it’s one of those days It is early morning and the sun has been up for about an hour. When you walk out the door to get into your car, your sunglasses immediately fog up. You know it’s going to be one of those days you wish you could hang out by the pool. It’s already stiflingly hot. Far above the ground, where you see the jets flying, it is very cold. As the sun continues to bake the ground, the air over the ground begins to heat up, becoming lighter and very buoyant. A column of warm, sticky, tropical air begins to rise. With the air around this column being very cold, it begins to rise faster and faster until the water vapor in the air condenses to form a cloud. Our cloud stops rising as it encounters a layer of warm air. Overnight, the heat we absorbed all day escapes and rises. It forms what we call a “cap.” Our little cumulus cloud tries to climb higher but there is no longer any cold air around it to help push it upward. By early afternoon a weakness forms in the cap and the air rushes upward at tremendous velocity. The cloud continues to grow with huge towering branches of cumulus clouds. Trillions of water droplets begin to get supercooled, remaining liquid below 32 degrees. Some water droplets begin to freeze into small hailstones. Gravity begins tugging at the hail pulling it toward the ground. On their way, they collide with the supercooled water droplets and grow larger. But the updrafts coming from the ground are relentless. They bring the hailstones back up, high into the cloud, coalescing into
even larger and larger hailstones. The rain and the hail begin to collide Glenn in the stronger upper Burns level winds. And then it begins with the first Lanier crack of lightning. Outlook A summer storm is born and it’s a big one. In the middle of this storm the updraft of warm and humid air continues to supply the storm with energy. It continues to grow larger. Looking down from space, our satellite imagery shows what looks like a large cotton ball, towering over surrounding clouds. Our radar shows a large core of hail and very heavy rainfall. As we switch modes on the radar to show wind velocities, we can see straight-line winds on the edge of the thunderstorm at 60 mph. We are also detecting hail the size of quarters. The National Weather Service radar operator issues a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. Our storm is now reaching its mature stage. All hell is breaking loose on the ground. Rain, hail, high winds and severe lightning, as many as 100 strikes in 10 minutes are occurring. As the rain and hail continue to fall, the air below the storm begins to cool. The updraft of hot humid air that was once feeding the storm with energy is being overwhelmed by the rain and hail-cooled air. It is scrounging for energy but there is none. When the storm can no longer continue there is a last downward rush of cold air. The air rushes toward the ground at nearly 80 miles per hour. As it hits the ground it fans out in all directions, causing roof shingles to peel away, lawn furniture is scattered everywhere and several trees

Young sailors enjoy taste of the sport through UYC junior sailing program By Pamela A. Keene How many of us wish we’d started a hobby as children, instead of discovering boating, tennis, photography or something else as an adult? Thanks to University Yacht Club, nearly three dozen kids won’t find themselves as adults wishing they’d started learning to sail as a kid. For the fourth year, UYC has hosted its summertime Junior Sailing Program for the children and grandchildren of members and friends of the club. For two one-week periods in June this year, 39 youngsters have spent time learning to sail, tie sailing knots, learn water safety and work together as teams at the club, located in Big Creek on the south end of the lake. “About 50 percent of our kids are back for at least the second time,” said accomplished sailor Susan Reddaway, who oversees the program. “And almost all of our instructors are U.S. Sailing certified to teach; we even have a couple of them who were former students and are now junior assistant coaches.” The participants sail on Optimist Prams and Sunfish, with some of the more advanced students learning to sail Lasers. They also spend some time on the water with club members on larger boats during the week. Reddaway and her siblings grew up sailing on Lake Lanier. Over the years, she has gone to national and international
competitions. “I enjoy helping young people learn about this fabulous sport,” she said. “It’s something they can do for their entire lives and laying a foundation for them as youngsters will help them both in their on-the-water lives and in the way the handle their lives as they grow up. The things we teach – teamwork, responsibility, sportsmanship and cooperation – will stay with them their entire lives.”
Holiday, Sunrise Cove slipholders see upgrades By Pamela A. Keene Over the past couple of months, slipholders at both Holiday Marina and Sunrise Cove Marina have been noticing dock upgrades. At Holiday, Dock S on the south side of the marina has been completely rehabilitated to offer 50-foot, high-roof slips to accommodate the large number of cruisers on the lake. “This is part of our ongoing work on the south side of the marina near the pavilion and bath house,” said Alex Laidlaw with Westrec, owners of Holiday
and Sunrise Cove. “We’ve also repaved and re-fenced in this part of the marina, creating a very private and protected area for our slipholders.” At Sunrise Cove, Westrec has replaced Dock A that was heavily damaged during the winter snow storms. It now has 12 high-roof 42-foot slips and concrete decking. “This is the first covered dock we’ve built at Sunrise in quite a while,” Laidlaw said. “We’ve created a very private upscale dock.”

LLOV getting two new docks By Jane Harrison Two new docks and gangways are expected to be installed at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue in September, possibly in time for one of the venue’s largest annual events. LLOV Venue Manager Morgan House said a $54,000 down payment was made to Boat Dock Works of Gainesville for the 120 foot docks and approaches made of non-splintering, slip proof material. House told Gainesville Hall ’96 board members at their June meeting that installations may be complete before the September 13 Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival, which attracts thousands to the venue. The venue’s governing board also discussed facility rental
fees, the proposed 2015 budget, and potential events, including ideas about a 2016 20th anniversary celebration. Board members expressed enthusiasm about organizing a community wide commemoration of the 1996 Olympic canoe/kayak and rowing events at the venue. They talked about how they might pitch the anniversary to national media and launch a month of celebratory events.

ASPS summertime activities abound Even though the United States Power Squadron places great emphasis on boating education and safety, we are also a fraternal organization enjoying many social activities both on the water and off. For instance, we have at least six monthly raft-ups or cruises on Lake Lanier not only to enjoy being on the water during a beautiful summer day, but also to enjoy being with people who enthusiastically share a love for boating and who have become friends. The raft-ups usually include several larger cruisers, a sail boat or two, the occasional houseboat and some smaller boats. In this case, size matters only when selecting the anchors to hold us in place during a fun afternoon. In addition to local boating activities, there are several other trips planned for this summer, one to the Finger Lakes and Erie Canal in New York, two seafood trips to Florida, one for deep sea fishing and the other for inshore scalloping, and a Potomac River cruise this Fall to visit Washington, DC, Mount Vernon, and several other places of interest along the way. Usually, we plan a

It’s all in a name, especially on the water Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. After many years on the water we are continually being amused by the names inscribed on the transom of the hundreds of boats that we see. While some are historically nautical, some are downright humorous and others are so convoluted that it is difficult to interpret any intended meaning, and even worse, it makes it even more difficult to hail them on the radio. I remember when we bought Gypsy Common, our 38-foot Island Packet. The previous owner had the name beautifully displayed, but the name seemed a little strange. Well it turns out that in Europe wandering gypsies commune in a common area generically referred to as the Gypsy Common which gave us something to hang onto, and it made an interesting story. It

Some super-yachts have made a Bob & great gift as was the case with Carolyn Tiger Woods giving his 155-foot Wilson Privacy to his wife Elin to become their secret hideaway from Cruising the media. Recently I read online Wilsons that Elin has considered changing the name of her yacht to Alimony. Foreign vessel owners often would be less expensive to keep the name, and reportedly it is bad confuse us. The French Canadians tend to be the first to come to luck to change a boat’s name, so mind. The names chosen sound a we kept it. Boat names give you some in- little strange, and when you cousight into a person – their occupa- ple that with their accent it becomes quite difficult at times to tion, their heritage or their communicate with them. I have philosophy. Take for example: made attempts to call out their Out to Lunch, Home Office or Field Office, names most likely to names using some French words I learned in grade school, and more be seen on a sports fishing boat. Gaelic Wanderer would be a good often that not I have received a few expletives in return having name for a sailboat owned by an made a mess of things and embarIrishman. And for the philosophers, Theseus Paradox might be rassed myself in the process. There are some really great appropriate (translated, that could mean if you change the name of a names out there, but there are others that are so over used that we boat, is it the same boat?). Mega-yacht owners are a little often hear two boats competing more ostentatious. enough originality, i.e. Blew Too Much, Lazy Bones, or Fantasea. There must be some truth to the old saying, “It’s all in a name,” or at least that is what the Shire Council Mayor of Bland, Australia thinks. In an effort to increase tourism in his region, Neil Pokoney joined forces with the neighboring community of Boring, and the small village of Dull, in the Scottish Highlands. It provided everyone with some comedic and fun relief and hopefully it will enhance their efforts to attract international visitors. So when it comes time to name your next boat we hope that you will give some serious thought as to what would be a proper name. It is always a fun exercise when the creative juices
are flowing but remember that you will probably end up monogramming hats, shirts, possibly towels and cups with your boat name. So make sure that the name is pronounceable, easily read and that it reflects an image that you will be proud of for years to come. In Lieu Of was the name on the Catalina 34 sailboat we had on Lake Lanier, and it’s still on the lake. She is a great boat but we remember laughing when we first saw the name: “Yeah, In Lieu Of everything else,” we have a new boat. I loved the name and hope you will christen your new boat with a name that you can love as well. - Until next time, Bob & Carolyn Wilson

Proposed north lake marina still in works despite protests By Jane Harrison The prospect of a Hall County lease of Bolding Mill Park will not detour the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from seeking marina proposals for the Lake Lanier park. The Corps plans to start accepting bids this month from developers interested in building a marina on the lake’s northern Chestatee River shore. A group opposing the potential marina vows it will be a “thorn in the side” of any developer who bids on the project and make plenty of noise at public hearings. As the “Save the Chestatee” organization is sharpening its resistance, Hall County officials and the Corps are looking into an agreement for the county to operate at least a portion of the park. County and Corps officials said regardless of a possible county lease, Corps marina plans remain in the works. District 2 Commissioner Billy Powell said he planned to propose county lease of the park, located in his district, at the commission’s June 23 work session. He, Commission Chair Dick Mecum, Parks & Leisure Services Director Mike Little, and Assistant County Administrator Marty Nix met with Corps’ operations project officials Tim Rainey and Chris Lovelady for about an hour and a half at the park on June 17. County and Corps officials indicated they are interested in pursuing a lease arrangement. Questions remain about how much of the park would be leased, what roles each entity would
have, and how the Corps could keep an official visitation count. The number of visitors figures into allocation of Corps funds for Lanier parks. There was no question about the Corps’ intention to seek marina bids. “I get the impression the Corps wants a marina there, no matter,” Mecum said. He added the county “really wouldn’t develop anything and would run (the park) as it is,” which he described would be similar to the county’s operation at River Forks Park. But, he said, the property belongs to the Corps and it could put in a marina if it wants. Save the Chestatee leader David P. Day believes marina development could still be a “toss up” if the county leases the park. “We’re hoping the county leases the whole thing … I don’t know of a single county-leased park where the Corps has come back and done something else,” he said. Day, who lives near the park and walks there on weekdays, started contacting local and Corps officials after reading about marina plans in February. He set up a website, printed “Save Bolding Mill” signs, and has spoken with nearby lake-goers, including a crowd at the Harbour Point community clubhouse. He said he’s not found anyone who wants a marina. As of mid-June about 200 names appeared on the opposition group’s petition at www.savethechestatee.org. Signers cited concerns about increased boat traffic and accidents
near the proposed marina site between two private community marinas, Harbour Point and Marina Bay, already permitted for more than 500 boat slips. They also commented about the potential for more traffic on the narrow park road, litter, noise, and general disturbance of the park’s peaceful nature. “No one up here wants more boats. At some point it has to be limited,” said Day, adding that the parking lot adjacent to the park’s free boat ramp fills up on weekends. Boaters launch into a cove fronted by an island and frequented by vessels launched from the other marinas. “They’ve got cigarette boats and houseboats coming out,” said James Martin, who lives on nearby Cool Springs Road and hauls his pontoon to Bolding Mill every weekend. He added it’s hard enough for him to get his “rinky dink” boat in and out now. He said he wouldn’t use a marina. He doesn’t want boat slip fees, more people, more rules, and security guards “asking what you’re doing.” More people is exactly what the Corps wants at Bolding Mill, which is on the Corps list of parks that need more visitation, decreased spending, or both to remain feasible to operate. A marina could bring in more visitors and offer fuel services to the northern stretch of lake that currently has one gas dock authorized only for private community and emergency use. The number of visitors “plays an important role in the budget process”

for the parks, Rainey said. Low visitation numbers put operation in jeopardy. Volunteers this season enabled the Corps to cut costs and continue operating the 90-site campground with hot showers, laundry facility, swimming area, and playground. The adjacent 17 acre day use area, the potential site for a marina, has restrooms, picnic pavilions, and the boat ramp. Rainey planned to consult with the Corps’ district office about “finding a mechanism” to lease to the county and maintain some Corps responsibilities so they can officially count Bolding Mill visitors. He said current arrangements at River Forks and Laurel Park, leased by the county, do not allow the Corps to get credit for visitation. Mecum mentioned that the county could help increase visitation through advertisements, something the Corps cannot do. The Corps is eyeing the combination of a county lease that might allow them to count visitors and a marina as a one-two method to boost visitation, reduce Corps cost at the park, and maintain funding allo-
cations. The Save the Chestatee instigator said campers at Bolding Mill tell him they will not return if a marina is built. Campground volunteer Rae Cowart, who checks in campers, said “They don’t want (a marina).” Whatever happens with a county lease or marina development will not come soon. Mecum said the Corps seems in “no hurry” about Bolding Mill’s future. Rainey admitted it will take time for the district office to consider county and marina plans. He expected marina bids would be accepted for 45 days, followed by two months of evaluations. Next would come public hearings. Day predicted that opponents to a marina will embark on a “fire and brimstone, shock and awe” campaign to halt a marina. Regardless of the county’s contention it cannot stop the Corps from pursing a marina, he said commissioners would feel the heat not only from constituents but due to an increased burden on county law enforcement and emergency services he believes a marina would require.

Families enjoy paddle trip at Don Carter State Park on Lanier By Jane Harrison Visitors to Don Carter State Park can explore the shoreline by water, take a dip at the beach, and learn a new skill in a Learn to Canoe class. Offered on weekends by Interpretive Ranger Clint Eller, the 2? hour session tours secluded coves where wood ducks nest and great blue herons feed. A dozen visitors, most of them first time paddlers on family outings, stroked on tranquil waters on a Saturday in June. As fish splashed beyond the boat ramp, parents and their children got ready to board canoes and sit-ontop kayaks for a short journey led by “Ranger Clint.” “A day on the water is better than a day off any day of the week,” Eller told the group circled-up on the boat ramp to hear his instructions. The park’s first interpretive ranger, an experienced paddler, herpetologist, and all-round outdoorsman, told them about wood ducks which nest in trees, giant turtles “that sometimes pop up beside the boat,” and bald eagles seen hunting along the Chattahoochee River section of Lake Lanier. Eller explained the tour would take them through a quiet cove to
a “swampy area” with a wood duck nest box, and then would skirt the opposite shore before crossing the channel to head for the beach. There, they would disembark near the sand, cool off and play in the water. He had a dry sack for their snacks, lunch, and stuff. Jay and Iris Lawson, of Gainesville, brought their three sons, Jim, Riley and Joe, for a Father’s Day weekend activity. Jay said he read about the class in his search for family-oriented outdoor recreation and requested it for dad’s day. Eller outfitted each participant in a life jacket, demonstrated basic strokes, and helped launch them in canoes or kayaks. Jay and boys, Riley and Joe, boarded a canoe, while Iris and Jim set out in a kayak. After a few awkward strokes getting their act together in a cove, the family embarked on a trip unlike others they’d had together. AJ and Erika Parker, of Gainesville, stepped into a canoe with daughter, Taylor, age 7, having a special day with her parents while two other siblings stayed with grandparents. “This is the place to bring kids. There are
multiple things they can do,” said AJ, whose family frequents the year-old park. “I want my kids to get out and not be afraid.” Soon Taylor, situated in the middle with her paddle, was helping dad “motor” while mom steered from the back of the boat. Although they had never paddled together, the trio looked like they’d shared a canoe before. A visitor sharing the canoe with Eller got extra insight into wildlife sightings and human activities on the park’s water and trails. Turtle eggs were beginning to hatch on shore, where yellow bellied sliders are the predominate species. They share the banks and quiet coves with river cooters, chicken turtles, and common snapping turtles. Deer and about a dozen kinds of snakes inhabit the park. Anglers, some casting from kayaks, were catching a mess of “pan fish” (bream and crappie) and gutting, scaling and hosing them off at the park’s fish cleaning station before frying them up. Before mid-day, you see more canoes and kayaks floating the calm water adjacent to the walk-in campsites than motor boats. Eller loves introducing people
Vesper’s Marine Service
to new experiences outdoors, whether in his campfire cooking class, Junior Ranger program, or on trail walks with Ranger Clint. “People don’t always want to just go out on their own,” Eller said. “They want to be shown things, to do things.” He hopes to extend the discovery on the water this month with paddling trips to a picnic spot and a longer tour up the river. Families touring with Eller last month indicated they might be back for an extended journey. Riley Lawson said his favorite
part of the trip was playing at the beach. After a couple of hours in a canoe, his mother, Iris, switched to one of the park’s new sit-ontop kayaks. “I like it better … it’s so much easier,” she said. Taylor Parker exited the canoe and talked excitedly about coming back to Ranger Clint’s Junior Ranger Camp. Before departing, her parents, AJ and Erika, tried paddling double in a canoe and stroked in graceful unison. They left with the joy of discovering a new outdoor activity for themselves and their kids.

SAFE RIDER pledge spells out PWC Safety Driver inattention and ignorance about boating “rules of the road” are chief causes of personal water craft accidents, according to a PWC industry official. The Personal Watercraft Industry Association seeks to reduce PWC mishaps with its nationwide Safe Rider program, which spells out how to responsibly operate the vessels. The organization launched its second annual Safe Rider program this summer to educate users of PWC on safety and asking them to sign a pledge committing to the safe and responsible operation of their vessels. The pledge can be accessed online at bit.ly/SafeRider or on the front page of www.pwia.org. “Our mission is to advocate for a safe and enjoyable experience on any personal watercraft,” said David Dickerson, executive director of PWIA. “Bringing the Safe Rider campaign to PWC users for a second year in a row will help us to continue to reach a larger audience with the message that PWC fun and safety go hand in hand.” PWIA first launched the Safe Rider program in 2013 with an inaugural on-water event at Port Royale Marina in partnership with state legislators and local businesses. The Safe Rider’s pledge form asks that all PWC riders agree to the take the following steps towards safety and fun on the water: • Scan the water for hazards and other boats • Avoid aggressive maneuvers • Follow local boating laws, including rules to prevent the transfer of invasive species • Examine your equipment • React to conditions • Insist on a safe distance from other boats, swimmers and fixed objects • Drive sober • Evaluate weather and waterways • Respect the environment by avoiding fuel spills and operating close to marine life Dickerson said that because of the maneuverability of the small vessels, drivers need to scan the water consistently to avoid collisions. He added that simple knowledge of and conformity with rules of the road are also key to preventing PWC accidents. The PWIA website includes information on instructional courses and downloadable safety materials, including a brief handbook titled Riding Rules for Personal Watercraft and PWC Orientation Checklist.can also be found at www.pwia.org.

Coast, that he decided to take early retirement. In late 1996, as he and Jane thought about where they’d like to settle, one of Jane’s sons – who was living in Atlanta – showed her Lake Lanier. “We only saw a little sliver of the lake, but it was all I needed to see,” Jane said. “I bought a chart of the lake, took it back to Rick and we pretty much decided on the spot to move here.” By the end of the summer of 1997, the couple purchased a 1.5acre lakefront lot in Cumming with a charming barn-cottage on the property. As they built their home, they lived in the 100- yearold cottage, which still stands and is periodically rented to long-term tenants. They also have an easy walk to their dock where currently they keep three boats, all painted red – Little Toot; Big Red, a jet boat; and Red Lightning, his “newest old boat,” a motor whale boat that came off a Navy Ship. While Rick and his wife Jane are headed to Florida when their Cumming lake-front home sells, they are still soaking up every
minute of the lake lifestyle at Lake Lanier. They’ll move to Shell Point, an active-adult community in Fort Myers. It’s located on a river and is pretty much within spitting distance of the Gulf of Mexico. “We’re taking Red Lightning with us,” he says. With its open design it will be perfect for river and open-water excursions. “We’ll start down there with one boat, but I’m sure that won’t last for long,” he said with a smile. Jane is accustomed to Rick’s penchant for unusual boats. “We’ve never really had a normal boat,” she said. For Rick and Jane, leaving Lake Lanier will be bittersweet. But everyone who knows them is confident that they’ll quickly acclimate to their new home. They’ll become involved in the community and share their positive and outgoing personalities. And for Rick, being on the water with Jane and Red Lightning at his side, he’ll be right at home. “You know,” he said, “this will be just another chapter in our lives, another adventure to experience.”

Growlers on Main: A beer-lover’s delight with dozens of craft brews By Pamela A. Keene A world of choices of some of the country’s best craft beers has arrived in South Hall County. Growlers on Main in downtown Flowery Branch opened in late January and is already a popular local gathering spot and the area’s go-to place for many craft beers that simply aren’t available anywhere else. Ashley and Alan Davenport have turned a fun hobby into a thriving business by opening Growlers on Main. The two got their feet wet with home-brewing a number of years ago, crafting their own beers from kits in their basement. However, they’ve now left brewing behind to capitalize on a growing trend – selling quart and half-gallon jugs of draft craft beers from around the country. “There are so many styles of beer, and once you’ve tasted some of these micro-brews, you’ll never drink a common beer again,” said Ashley, who also works as a physician assistant/ anesthesiologist. “If you don’t find a beer you like, you just haven’t found your style yet.” The couple operates Growlers in Flowery Branch and is making
plans – with approval of the Gainesville City Council – to open a second location near the Gainesville Square, they hope sometime this summer. Alan, for the time being, has kept his day job in medical sales. They also have three children all under the age of 10. The couple, along with her brother Guy Cooper, staff the Flowery Branch store six days a week. Customers can sample up to three one-ounce pours per visit. It’s not uncommon to drop in and find a half-dozen people sampling then choosing a brew or two to take home in sealed “growlers” – 32- and 64-ounce brown bottles sold on premise and available for purchase. Once they’re empty, the growlers can be refilled with new choices of draft beer. The store recently added wines on tap. Customers can sample then purchase red or white and the varieties change when one runs out. Three large chalk boards are updated daily with up to 25 types of beer. “We try to always keep about five or six Georgia-crafted beers on the boards,” Alan said. “And once we’ve blown a keg

(used up all the draft beer in the specialized kegs it arrives in), we’ll bring in something new.” Growlers has offerings for the under-21 set as well, including hand-crafted non-alcoholic root beers, cherry cola, crème soda and other carbonated beverages. When asked to name their favorites, both Ashley and Alan demur: “It depends on the day, the weather and our mood.” Growlers has many repeat customers, and the split between

male and female is, surprisingly, about 50:50. Alan said that many of the female customers are purchasing beer for their husbands, but then they’re trying it as well and finding that they like craft beers, too. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised by how many people have been by since we opened,” Ashley said. “It’s kind of been like ‘Cheers’ around here, except without the drinking.” Growlers hosts special events on the first Sunday of each month

Exciting entertainment is endless in White County It would take a book to reveal even half of the diverse entertainment opportunities available in nearby White County, but the first consideration should be a base of operations with great accommodations. My first choice for the perfect place to stay is the Sylvan Valley Lodge, which is just far enough outside Helen and Cleveland to stay away from the crowds and enjoy a good glass of wine in quiet, fresh mountain air. The lovely gardens of native plants around the lodge allow the odor of nature to permeate the calm atmosphere in a serene setting. The decor on the inside of the lodge is casual with soft earth tones that gives every guest a feeling of home. Mountain forest views are plentiful and easy to enjoy from semi-private balconies and large windows in the tastefully appointed rooms. For more information or reservations, visit www.sylvanvalleylodge.com or call 706-865-7371. Best eateries in the area would have to include Bernie’s Restaurant in the Sautee-Nacoochee community that has been serving excellent meals since 1989 and is in a house that was built in 1920. It is fine dining in a casual, comfortable atmosphere and is operated by a mother/daughter team with extensive culinary training. To learn more, call 706-878-3830 or visit www.letsgotobernies.com. For the tastiest food in the area with an interesting local flavor, nothing can beat Mully's Nacoochee Grill in a rural north Georgia farmhouse that was constructed in the Leaf Community of White County in the early 1900s. It was moved to the Na-

It is run by life long resident and former Mayor of Helen, Greg “Mully” Ash, who is an unforgettable character! For info, call 706-878-1020 or visit www.nacoocheegrill.com. No trip to White County would be complete without a little fishing with the folks at Unicoi Outfitters located just outside Helen near Nora Mills. They are the oldest full service fly fishing shop and guide service in all of North Georgia and offer regional fishing information and trophy rainbow trout and brown trout in privatelyowned waters including the exclusive 1.5 mile section of the Chattahoochee River near their shop. To hook up with them, call 706-878-3083 or visit www.unicoioutfitters.com. Since I love horseback riding, the chance to ride for an hour along the Chattahoochee River including a couple opportunities to ford the cool waters was a must for me! So, I booked a trail ride with Chattahoochee Stables at 706-878-7000 or www.ChattahoocheeStables.com for a relax-
ing ride on a gentle horse named Abby. Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing sports in the North Georgia Mountains, and I had the distinct pleasure of riding with former Florida Mountain Bike Champion, Woody Wood, to the gorgeous Horse Trough Falls. Woody owns Woody’s Mountain Bikes near Helen and operates a full-service bicycle shop, featuring bicycle trips, bike sales, repairs and rentals. It’s fun for all, ages and there are more than 60 trails in the Northeast Georgia Mountains to fit all skill levels. For information or reservations, call 706-878-3715 or www.woodysmtb.net. Another great place for the whole family is ZipNTime located right next to the Habersham Winery and run by Danny Otter. It offers lots of excitement and some of the best zip lines in the South. Additionally, a taste of history specifically related to the Nacoochee Valley, including the Cherokee Indians, the gold rush and the moonshine makers is part of the visit. Youngsters even have their own exciting zip line that is completely safe for even really small kids. For reservations or info visit www.zipntime.com or call 706-878-9477. Though more than one day would be required to try all of

Keep water safety on your mind this summer The recreation season is in full swing at Lake Lanier following this year’s busy Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer, those lazy humid days where trips to the lake for picnics, swimming and boating are a rite of passage. We are fortunate that Lake Lanier provides a welcome recreation spot only a few miles from the hustle of city and suburban life. Every year, however, fun weekend outings turn to tragedy as people unexpectedly lose their lives. Lake Lanier can and should be a fun place for responsible water recreation, but it is crucial to be ever mindful of the drowning risks outlined in this article. With a little preparation and responsibility, we can all increase our chances of a safe and fun summer on Lanier. There are many misconceptions surrounding drowning. An overview of the global positioning system When was the last time you heard someone say the words: Global Positioning System? GPS, as it is universally known and understood, is such a widespread technology in just about anything we do and yet in relative terms of time, it is a recent introduction to the private boat market. A few years past, getting a satellite fix was considered marginal and had to be checked and verified for safe navigation purposes. I often had to rely on other forms of navigation to transit the oceans and coastal waters: visual piloting, Loran, even celestial. In April of this year, NOAA ceased printing paper charts. This action drew hundreds, if not thousands of comments from all sorts of media and people touting the end of an era. The older form of paper charts can still be purchased but the product is substantially different in texture and not as sturdy as the others. What are the benefits of our current system of GPS charts and navigation? Superior speed and accuracy are the primary gains to boating safety and operation. The new charts are available in many different forms and styles: 3D, Google Earth, underwater cartography, satellite weather information and other advances too numerous to list in this article. There is one important part of this new technology that should be understood and applied when using these forms of charts for navigation as they are not up-

Letter to editor
Reader asks captains to be aware of wake Dear Editor, I wanted to share an incident that happened on the lake Sunday, Memorial Day weekend, so that captains would be aware of their wake and the potential danger to other boaters. My husband and I and our daughter and her family were looking forward to a day on the lake. We had a delightful time until we were traveling north and around a 40-foot cabin cruiser traveling south passed us at a rather fast speed plowing an enormous wake. My husband is usually good at maneuvering our boat and avoiding wakes of bigger boats but this time it was unexpected and there was no place to go. The huge waves gushed over the top of our 20-foot bow rider, drenching our daughter and two year old grandson who were sitting up front, then hitting my husband who was driving and our son-in-law who was holding a 10 month old baby and finally hitting my six year old grand-
daughter and myself who were sitting on the bench seat at the back of the boat. We immediately turned around and pursued the cabin cruiser to get some kind of identification. The driver was aware that we were following him and seemed to think it was a lark. We got the name of the boat and returned to the marina where we reported it to authorities. Although no laws may have been broken and we’re thankful nothing serious happened, it scared us when we realized that if the wake were higher or hit the boat differently, the boat may have capsized and the outcome may have been very different – even though the children were wearing life vests. Please keep in mind that captains are responsible for their wake and that boats, both large and small, have a right to an enjoyable and safe time on the lake. - Sharon Turner Monroe, GA
