By Pamela A. Keene In May another one bit the dust, another abandoned boat, that is. As part of the ongoing program to rid Lake Lanier of abandoned or derelict boats and docks, the Lake Lanier Association, with the help of several area businesses, removed a sunken 24foot pontoon boat near marker 2LR and Little River Park. However, there appears to be a twist in this saga.

“We sent divers down to see if there was any registration information on the vessel before we began to remove it, but because of the way the sides of the boat were collapsed, divers weren’t able to establish ownership,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the association, which is spearheading the abandoned vessel removals. “However, once we had the boat out of the water, we were able to locate information that has led us to the last owner of record.”

Cloud said that the association is pursuing communication with the owner in hopes of being able to recoup some of the costs from extricating the boat. “We’re contemplating next steps,” she said.

identified the location of the submerged aluminum-hulled pontoon boat. The association called on its community partners to assist with getting it off the bottom of the lake, including Robert Estrada with TowBoatUS, Brad Wiegand with Boat Dock Works, and Travis Terry with Terry’s Towing.

“These great business owners and others like them have been a lifesaver to moving our removal program forward,” she said.

“Their services are either completely comped or very deeply discounted to help us.”

The process can be complex.

In this case, the pontoon boat was floated to the surface to ensure that it would remain intact through the removal. It was moved to a nearby boat ramp where volunteers punctured the water-filled pontoons so they could drain.

The boat still had its motor on board. Because it was so heavy it had to be winched up to put it on a waiting truck that took it to a salvage yard.

The association recently was notified of a $25,000 grant from

the state to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources that will be used for clean-up projects on Lanier in coordination with the non-profit group.

“We are so grateful for this funding to help with our program,” Cloud said. “However, we still rely on our business partners to assist because there is much work to be done. In this case, where the last owner of record has been identified, we will always do our best to hold people accountable when they can be identified.”

I was prompted to select this topic after reviewing the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2015 Boating Accident Statistics, published annually by the U.S. Coast Guard.

We all know that it is illegal in Georgia to drive an automobile with an open container of alcohol on board but it is not prohibited to do the same while operating a boat. So where does that leave us as recreational boaters when it comes to having a fun time on the water with alcoholic drinks being consumed by the skipper and/or passengers? I am not a lawyer and not giving legal advice here, but I simply want to give you something to think about when this subject comes up.

In our popular “Boating Skills & Seamanship” course, we cover this subject in Chapter 2, under “Substance Abuse.” We remind students that alcohol is a contributing factor in many boating accidents and deaths. “Legal issues aside, drugs and alcohol have no place on a boat. “Seaworthy” has reported frequently of claims filed where intoxicated guests, after losing their balance and perception, have had serious falls, even while the boat is still tied to the dock. Guests have drowned after falling or diving overboard and toxicology re-

The courses are scheduled for Tuesday, June 7 and Saturday, June 18. This course also serves as a PWC certified course for children under the age of 16.

Crappie fishing Crappie fishing was good for the month of May. The secret to catching crappie this time of year is to use the method of “run and gun” (targeting as many docks with structure as possible). Using your Lowrance Down Scan and Structure Scan will greatly assist in finding these spots. There are a lot of fishermen on the lake, and it is getting busier with recreational boaters as well. We’ve been catching good numbers of fish targeting docks in 15 to 25 feet of water, mostly three quarter pound to one and a half pounds in weight. When you start catching smaller fish, move on.

Also, some fish are on submerged brush piles in 15 to 20 feet of water. The brush piles with tops about 10 feet below the surface are producing best. Your electronics will help you determine whether there are fish on the brush piles or not. If there are, throw a marker buoy and fish the whole brush pile by circling your buoy to find the best angles. Stay off the brush about 30 feet, cast your jig past the brush pile and retrieve slowly while shaking your rod. This will give the jig

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Opening festivities reunite ’96 volunteers, celebrate Pan Ams

By Jane Harrison Dave Roselle sported an original blue and white “Atlanta 1996 Olympics” polo shirt when he welcomed guests to the opening ceremony of the Continental Olympic Pan American Championships last month. The Olympic qualifier for sprint canoe/kayak, also known as Pan Am Games, reunited many volunteers and organizers whose passion ignited the Olympic torch in northeast Georgia more than two decades ago.

“I came back to see it,” said Roselle, from Jackson County, adding he’s proud to carry the Olympic spirit back to Lake Lanier. Similar words rang throughout the reception at Grace Episcopal Church and opening festivities at Pearce Auditorium on the eve of competition at Lake Lanier Olympic Park.

“It’s exciting, it’s wonderful to see the people from all over,” said Jim Mathis who was part of the local team that welcomed an Atlanta Olympic Committee searching for a flatwater venue in the early 1990s. Mathis, founder of Gainesville-Hall ’96, waxed sentimental about the momentous days that etched memories into the hearts of volunteers and those who invited international athletes into their homes in 1996.

Festivities before the 2016 Olympic qualifier reflected a warm and exotic welcome, but not the same kind of fiery enthusiasm the Olympics sparked 20 years ago. It was a decidedly lower key affair than the one that aroused the community way back then. But, those who sipped wine, ate locally-prepared hors d’ouevres and cheered during a cavalcade of flags got a taste of international flavor uncommon in recent years around Lanier. From the “we are one” remarks from Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to the soulful crooning of the featured singer and fluttering feathers of Brazilian dancers, the evening presented a mix of sights and sounds rare in these parts.

Collins lauded recent city, county and sponsorship investments that reinvigorated a venue that had lost its luster over the years. “We envision investing $10 million in the entire park to make it the vision and the diamond we know it can be,” she said.

Danny Dunagan told attendees “it’s nights like this that make me proud to be mayor of Gainesville.” He added he became a fan of sprint canoe/kayak from the moment he knew what the sport is. “I thank every athlete, coach, school and person who has kept this dream alive so many years,” he said. He praised the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club “for its unbreakable spirit and knowing what is possible.”

Hall County Commissioner Billy Powell remarked “the county is privileged to dedicate funding and resources to the Olympic venue as it continues its original purpose” in the development of rowing and canoe/kayaking. He wished athletes well as they strive toward “the greatest athletic event on this earth.”

Gov. Deal, who made Hall County his home for 45 years, invoked memories of a broadcaster’s assessment of Gainesville as “the friendliest community” of the 1996 Olympiad. “You embody the Olympic creed,” he told athletes, many of whom skipped the ceremony, presumably to focus on their coming tests. “The

important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well,” he quoted from the creed.

He described “as one” all who were there representing “The Americas” in the continental Olympic qualifier for North, South, and Central America, plus nearby island countries. Regardless of differences in language and culture “we are all one” in the Americas, he said.

Along with reciting the Olympic motto, “faster, higher stronger,” he also interjected his own slogan, “Georgia is the number one place to do business.”

“Come back to Gainesville, come back to the state of Georgia …when you get older and become entrepreneurs. It’s a good place to come.”

Cecilia Farias, COPAC President, said Lake Lanier Olympic Park fulfills “expectations of an Olympic legacy.” She commended GH ’96 for improving the infrastructure to hold the event. “Thanks for embracing the event with deep ownership.”

Nashville singer Mike Farris and his nine-piece band, Roseland Rhythm Review, belted out soulful standards on the Pearce stage in a brief performance capped by gyrating, swiveling, prancing Dance Brazil performers from Atlanta. The carnival proceeded out into the auditorium’s great lawn for picture-taking and well-wishing before the Games began.

So, what are the values of these programs to you?

The bottom line is that if LLA did not exist, you would probably create an organization to do what it does.

But fortunately LLA has worked on these and other issues for the last 45 years as a volunteer organization.

LCKC paddlers look to future after Pan Am games None of the local competitors qualified for Rio’s 2016 Olympics

By Jane Harrison “I felt that I hadn’t finished yet,” said Maggie Hogan the only American sprint paddler to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. The 35-year-old former Division 1 swimmer from California won her Olympic berth in the Women’s K1 500 meter race in the Pan American Continental Olympic Championships at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. It was her third try in 11 years on the U.S. National team. She said it would be her last.

Question is, how many of the young Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club athletes who hoped for Olympic glory this year will stay for another chance in 2020 or even 2024? None of the seven Lanier paddlers, most of whom are more than decade younger than Hogan, made the podium in Olympic qualifying events on their home waters.

Race-by-race LCKC Head Coach Claudiu Ciur, LCKC parents and supporters saw Olympic hopes dashed by faster competitors from Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. The seven – Chris Miller, Stanton Collins, Ian Ross, Gavin Ross, Ben Hefner, Farran Smith, and Tim Hornsby – needed to win against other paddlers from the western hemisphere to automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympics in the last chance regatta May 19-22. At the regatta’s close, there remained a glimmer of hope that some of them may go to Rio de Janeiro pending deliberations of the International Canoe Federation.

“There is a 10 to 25 percent chance that two or three (LCKC) athletes might get invitations

based on their Pan Am performances,” said Ciur, also the Team USA head coach. Ian Ross and Hornsby, who trains elsewhere but still identifies with LCKC, may get the nod, as could Miller and/or Collins. Ciur speculated that the dearth of American paddlers headed to the world’s highest acclaimed athletic competition may prompt the sport’s governing body to invite strong performing Americans to Brazil. He expected to know more by late June or early July.

LCKC paddlers’ Pan Am results have Ciur and his troupe adjusting plans. “I’m still looking to the long term plan,” said the 8year-LCKC coach who believed this would be the year to realize his dream of coaching at least one Olympian. The former Romanian Olympic team canoeist said he will be asking his athletes, “Where do you see yourself in the future? Are you in for the long term?”

The coach said he would “sit down with all of them and make a plan.” Some indicated they’ve charted their course. “I’m going for 2020,” asserted a disappointed but undaunted Ian Ross, who was making his second try for an Olympic berth. “I’m part of the sport. I want to make a mark for a long time and retire from the sport on top and be remembered,” said the 23-year-old canoeist.

Ben Hefner, another Ciur protégé, wants to finish school, “keep in touch with the water,” and shoot for a future Olympics after he’s made a mark toward a career. After investing 10 years paddling and earning his undergraduate degree, the scholar athlete plans to earn a doctorate

degree in engineering management or oceanic engineering. “I’ll stay fit and come back to sprint for 2024,” he said after his second Olympic attempt.

Miller, 24, an all-round workhorse for LCKC racing everything from 200 meters to 1000 meters in single and double kayaks at Pan Ams, is also heading back to school. “I’ve got to finish school first and see where life leads me,” he said, pondering whether he’d make another Olympic effort.

Canadian Adam van Koeverden, 34, won his fourth Olympic berth at Pan Ams. The popular Canadian athlete and owner of four medals from Athens, Beijing and London commanded the single kayak 1000 meter race from the start. The red-suited van Koeverden emerged from his boat to the cheers of not just his home team but others who revere his accomplishments, including LCKC athletes who have shared his practice waters on Lanier. Miller lined up against the legendary Canadian in the 1000 meter final. En route to the starting dock, a surprised Miller heard the formidable competitor offer, “Good luck, Chris!...I told him good luck and that’s the last I saw of him.”

First-time Olympic qualifier Hogan said her main emotion was “relief” after she got her Olympic bid. The life-time competitive athlete said she climbed into a sprint kayak late, at age 26, after swimming for the University of California at Santa Barbara and surf ski ocean racing. She finally got to realize her dream at an American Olympic site and stayed at the home of a Lanier family with an Olympic legacy.

Hogan and coach Michele Eray, a 2012 South African Olympic team paddler, said they felt right at home with Richard and Connie Hagler, founding members of LCKC who were among the core group that brought 1996 Olympic canoe/kayak and rowing to Lake Lanier.

Hogan actually finished second in her race but achieved her Olympic bid because the winner from Canada had already qualified. Notes from the competition: • Men’s K1 1000 meters-Chris Miller, finished 7th, following his coach’s guidance to “go easy” after the first 500 meters to save strength for the K2 1000 qualifier two hours later. “The first one was really just to get the jitters out.”

• Men’s C2 1000 meters-Ian and Gavin Ross came in fourth after a show of strength and stamina from Cuban gold medalists Fernando Jorge Enriquez and Serguey Torres Madrigal, who almost had to be helped from their boat at the finish dock. The Cubans, shaky after the all-out sprint, laid down on the dock, seemingly unable to stand before their cheering teammates. “It wasn’t exactly what we expected,” said Ross. “The Cubans tore out of there …if they didn’t hold it, we could have taken them. But they held on to the finish line.”

• Men’s K2 1000: Miller and Stanton Collins finished 5th, behind another strong Cuban duo with gold and pairs from Mexico and Argentina, winning silver and bronze. Collins said the strong tail winds, usually a favor in sprint competition, wreaked havoc with their rhythm. “We didn’t have a cadence until the last 200 meters.”

• Women’s K2 500 meters— LCKC’s Farran Smith and San Diego paddler Samantha Barlow

teamed up, finishing 5th behind medalists from Canada, Mexico and Colombia. Smith, age 16, was one of the youngest competitors racing for an Olympic bid.

• Men’s C1 200 meters—Ben Hefner described his effort in the rain Saturday morning as “a great race,” with a good start, fast middle and finish not as quick as he’s done before. Although he said his time was slow, he felt he “couldn’t have done better.” He finished eighth in his second Olympic bid.

• Men’s K1 200 meters—Tim Hornsby, who raced in the 2012 London Olympics, saw four more years of training and international competition end within about 38 seconds. Hornsby, who many considered one of the U.S. canoe/kayak team’s best shots at an Olympic medal, did not make the podium. The visibly disappointed Olympic hopeful got out of his boat and sat at the end of the finish dock where appeared to be consoled by his Canadian training partner. After several minutes, he slipped back into his kayak and paddled back to the boathouse without a nod to fans.

• Jubilant Olympic qualifiers: Of all celebrations throughout Pan Ams, one of the most jubilant involved the Brazilian pair of Gilvan Roberio and Edson Silva, who won the Men’s K2 200 meters. Their jubilation erupted into splashes and broad grins from the water and continued on dock with hugs, cheers and photographs with team members and fans.

Reading ‘Blue Thunder’ brings back racing memories I just finished reading a book called “Blue Thunder,” by Thomas Bordick and Charlene Mitchell. It’s about how the mafia owned and finally murdered world boat racing champion Don Aronow. Aronow founded the boat companies of Formula, Donzi, Magnum, Cigarette, and Blue Thunder.

Formula was later bought by Dick Genth who had Thunderbird Boats. I raced him one year in the St. Petersburg Boat Show Race.

He beat me, but not by much. His passenger, besides his mechanicthrottleman was the older boy who played on the “Flipper” TV series. He was making a fool of himself at the trophy presentation, so I asked him what he did to win, he said nothing. I said exactly and he calmed down. The next time I saw Dick Genth I asked him where his noisy rider was and he said, “I got rid of him, thank God.” I first began to know about the Donzi boats after I won a marathon race in the Gulf of Mexico off Tierra Verde which is next to St. Petersburg, Fla. The race was presented by orchestra leader Guy Lombardo for the opening of his new hotel and nightclub. Lombardo was himself a racer in a 7 liter hydroplane called Tempo V. On my way to the dock I saw another race boat dead in the water, so I went to see if I could be of assistance. The boat was a 16’ Donzi that had run out of gas after the race. The driver was the plant manager for Donzi and a fellow worker. They both eventually drove for my Cobia/Mercury race team with much success.

Every time I went to Miami I usually visited Thunderboat Ally, and there I met Don Aronow in almost the exact place where he was gunned down. That was the place to go if you wanted to discover the latest tricks in racing.

The book not only talks about the mafia bosses, but a lot of guys I raced against. The night before the 1970 Bahamas 500 Aronow’s riding mechanic/throttleman “Knocky” House and I spent hours debating the pros and cons of certain set ups on race boats, of course a beer or two enlightened our discussion. That year a Bahamian driver won. I never did find out how Don and Knocky did, but I heard they had some sort of trouble. Legislative caucus meets about Lanier issues

By Pamela A. Keene Mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to noon when the Lake Lanier Legislative Caucus meets to discuss all things Lanier. The group will convene at Lanier Islands for a roundtable discussion among themselves in preparation for the Georgia General Assembly’s 2017 session.

The meeting is open to the public to come as observers as these officials discuss a variety of issues, including boat titling legislation that will be proposed in

2017, long-term strategic funding for the Lake Lanier Association’s ongoing abandoned vessel removal, and concerns regarding siltation. A discussion about improvements at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park is also on the agenda.

Chaired by Sen. Renee Unterman, the caucus comprises all the legislators from counties that touch Lanier. Local officials will also be invited. “This will be a chance for us to talk among ourselves about our accomplishments as well as issues facing the lake,”

Sen. Unterman said. “We will also be getting updates from several organizations, such as the Department of Natural Resources about the number of fatalities at the lake.”

In the 2016 session, the Georgia Legislature earmarked $25,000 for the removal of abandoned vessels and derelict docks on Lanier. The funds will be administered through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to support the removal program spearheaded by the Lake Lanier Association.

The future of boating with rapid advances in technology With all the rapid advances in technology, what do you think the environment of boating will look like in just a few years? Sometimes I feel my age when discussing conventional navigation and boating safety to a class or seminar.

Mercator projection is now a foreign term, charting is routinely performed by high speed GPS. No longer are the depths below you a secret – in full view with 3D sonar – even cameras that can peer below. Then there are night vision optics that can see the surface in darkness and inclement weather. There are countless more developments but I don’t have room to adequately discuss in a monthly article.

With regards to the military, there is a new class of vessel that is now part of the US Navy, the USS Zumwalt DDG1000 (search Wikipedia to see a photo). As you can see it looks nothing like a normal warship. It almost features the flare of a WWI battleship or a dreadnought. What makes this vessel so unique is the 610’ stealth design paints a target about the size of a small fishing boat on the radar. It is so stealthy that it is considered a hazard to other navigation because of its invisibility by normal sensors found on commercial and pleasure type vessels.

Glass cockpits are replacing small instrument clusters, radars without pulse generating magnetrons now use broadband for extreme accuracy. The bright, vivid, easy to understand radar presentation now shows long distances and most remarkably, extreme detail near your vessel without any radiation hazard.

A safety tip on using radar: It’s not how far away you can see, it’s seeing navigation hazards close by.

GPS is immediate and precise, a location fix or position every second is considered the norm.

Navigational charts not only show standard cartography, but Google Earth offers pictures of the surrounding shore and the bottom of the ocean, river, or lake, depending on the depth.

Control and propulsion systems are drastically reforming

into different technologies. Rudder and propellers are substituted by extremely versatile water jets providing incredible speed and agility.

What do I think boating will look like in a few years? Nothing compared to today! Even professional licensed education is morphing into ultra-modern requirements of training with advanced navigation systems such as electronic charting, high tech radar and sonar sensors, and cartography presentation in 3D satellite composite form.

Some would question why we need to know the basics, the prerequisites in USCG licensing and boating safety. The simple answer: it all comes down to the decision you make when the moment on the water arrives. Depending on only one source of navigation and collision avoidance information can lead to increased risk.

My glimpse of the future of boating: remarkable progress to the already vast array of choices of advanced electronics and systems. In the end, the basics will still be the foundation to safe boating as they are today. That basic component of boating safety will not change with time, just increase in scope and complexity.

‘Godzilla’ didn’t show up this winter Last fall, when we saw this “Godzilla El Nino” predicted, we thought we would see some really major rainfall through the winter and spring. There were some days in the winter where we did see heavier rains, but not to the extent we thought we would see with that strong of an El Nino.

We had an extremely early start to spring. We saw near record high temperatures in March and April. Consequently, trees and plants began blooming early, soaking up the moisture from the soil. I have really been monitoring the rainfall since March 1st, the beginning of meteorological spring.

I began noticing below average rainfall totals week by week. During the middle of last month, the U.S. Drought Monitor came out and showed much of north Georgia in moderate drought conditions. For now, the moderate drought conditions are not having an impact on lake levels. We are in great shape going into June. However, June is generally one of our drier months.

We are now going from El Nino into a La Nina pattern. Instead of ocean warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, we are going to get ocean cooling. The cooler than average sea surface temperatures will begin to alter the normal global wind patterns in such a way that we could be in store for a long, hot, and dry summer. The

Climate Prediction Center is thinking along those lines as well.

While La Nina could reduce our normal summer rainfall, depending on how quickly it forms, it will also likely create an environment more conducive to hurricane formation.

The Gulf of Mexico is the region where tropical systems like to form in the early summer. Some of the tropical experts believe the Gulf could be extremely active this year. Hurricane season begins June 1st.

Here are the names of the for the 2016 hurricane season: Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Hermine, Ian, Julia, Karl, Lisa, Matthew, Nicole, Otto, Paula, Richard, Shary, Tobias, Virginie, and Walter. We are actually going to begin with Bonnie this summer because we have already had Hurricane Alex.

When did that happen you ask? Alex actually formed last winter! Hurricane Alex was the first Atlantic hurricane in January since Alice in 1955, and the first to form in the month of January since 1938. Alex originated as an extratropical cyclone near the Bahamas on January 7, 2016.

Wake for Warriors helps wounded veterans adjust to life after deployment

By Pamela A. Keene After 28 years as a U.S. Marine, Lt. Col. (ret.) Dave Deep knows a few things about the scars of deployment. Coming home can be daunting, but for veterans facing the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder or physical disabilities, finding a sense of normalcy can be more than challenging.

“After seeing so many lifechanging injuries, we started looking for something that these veterans could do to stay active and look forward to,” says the

Delta pilot who lives on Lake Arrowhead in Northwest Georgia.

“About five years ago, my neighbors and I hosted five to 10 vets to come wakeboarding on the lake, and it really caught on.”

Deep continued to invite the warriors to the lake and eventually connected with Semper Fi Fund, a national group that provides services for all members of the military, not just Marines. It opened doors to a broader group of participants and additional financial support. He secured 501(c) 3 tax-exempt status so be

able to accept donations.

At the Atlanta Boat Show, he connected with Perry and Jenny Serwitz, owners of Pull Watersports and a Tige boat dealer in Forsyth County. As a result, Tige has signed on as a major sponsor.

Deep enlisted the help of his friend, graphic designer and wake surfer Levi Dills of Kennesaw, to develop the group’s logo and a “wow” paint job for the program’s boat. It’s a gray and red grinning shark that cuts a mean presence on the water.

He suffered head, face and neck injuries and was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury as a result of the blast. Since then, Sullivan has tried a couple of times to get out on the water on a wakeboard, but it wasn’t until he met Dave Deep and Levi Dills that his dream of wakeboarding became reality.

“In April, I was watching wake-surfing videos on Insta-

gram and saw #wakeforwarriors, so I sent a message and Dave got right back to me,” said Sullivan, who happened to be in Atlanta at the time training for his new job with the Federal Reserve. “Once he found out that I was here, he invited me out to his house for the weekend, and he and Levi got me up on the board within the first hour. Now I’m learning tricks and can’t believe I’m doing this.”

and will travel to New York in July for an event. “My 10-yearold daughter is coming to see me there, and she is so fired up,” he said. Sullivan said that Wake for Warriors has been more than a game-changer for him and the other veterans who participate.

“It doesn’t just make me feel better for a day; it’s changed my future. This is something that I can enjoy and be good at. And it’s all because of what Dave and Levi are selflessly doing to help other veterans. They’re amazing.”

“We adapt the person to the gear so that more people can partici-

pate,” Deep said. “Our goal is to share our passion for water sports to help heal the emotional and psychological wounds of military veterans and their families. It gives them a place where they can enjoy a few worry-free days.

And, after all, it’s hard to have a bad time behind a boat.”

Keene In less than six weeks, Lake Lanier will be literally crawling with pirates eager to share their loot with three local charities: Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County. Organizers have been at work since last year’s event and recently reported that registration is filling up for the 300 slots at this year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run. “Our traditional meet and greet on Thursday will be all new this year,” said John Woodruff, chairman emeritus of the board of Lanier Partners, which produces the world’s largest poker run for children’s charities. Last year, the group raised just under $380,000 during its three-day event. “(That Thursday) A casino party, plus a Texas Hold ‘em poker tournament, will add to the excitement of the weekend. SURFeRAMA 2016 comes to Lanier On Saturday June 11th wake surfers from across the lake will converge at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park. That’s where the inaugural SURFeRAMA 2016 will be held. The event, which runs from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., is presented by PULL Watersports.

“This event is more of a ‘meetup’ for boaters and wake surfers to hang out,” says Jenny Serwitz, owner of Pull Watersports. “There will be multiple boats offering all levels of riding and boards to try out.” Participants can come by car or boat.

There will be live music as well.

Surfers want to hang out with friends and family and have a great time on the water. Wake surfing has been around for a while but during the last few years it has jumped ahead to become one of the most popular water sports on the lake. All over Lanier, wake surfers gather to ride powerful waves and incredibly quick boards – and gather around the back of a boat for a great time on the water.

During SURFeRAMA 2016 beginners who have never tried wake surfing can jump on a boat and get a quick lesson. Advanced riders can jump on a different boat and get tips from pro riders. Lake Lanier area offers diverse habitat for birds

The spring morning resounded with the songs, calls and shrill warnings of tree and brush dwellers as two dozen bird watchers treaded softly into their diverse habitat at the Linwood Nature Preserve in Gainesville.

Led by nationally-known ornithologist Georgann Schmalz, the birders heard or sighted about 40 kinds of birds who live near the lake by choice or by chance.

Science Center in DeKalb County for 28 years and is a three time past president of the Atlanta Audubon Society, identified by sight and sound the energetic creatures that fluttered in the tree canopy or preened in the open.

The passive park presented an orchestra of chirps, tweets, and trills from the feathered performers mostly hidden by lush early May foliage. The ornithologist, whose research and workshops have helped national wildlife agencies inventory Southeastern birds, speculated that the Linwood preserve – a 33-acre bird sanctuary – is probably the best birding site on Lake Lanier.

“Ninety percent of birding is heard only,” said the keen-eared Schmalz, encircled by bird lovers getting their auditory nerves in gear. Listening for the “pitch, tempo, rhythm, and behavior of the notes” helps birders identify species that are feeding, nesting, or just visiting. Sometimes it takes good ear-eye coordination – and binoculars – to actually spot the singer.

About three months of the year, early spring to early summer, the varied environment near Lanier attracts part-time visitors.

Migrating birds, such as hooded warblers, tanagers, and thrushes, seek “refuge from concrete,” Schmalz said. Stopover places, like Linwood or even a backyard with one or two trees, can make the difference between life and death for winged travelers.

Some birds that seem atypical at an inland lake make the trip from seaside homes and stay on Lanier. Ospreys, Sea Gulls, and Terns – fish eaters – snatch their meals from the water year round on Lanier. Birds of prey – Bald eagles and even Cormorants – scan Lanier’s surface for a catch.

hoochee River arm of the lake.

The webbed feet of the large black and white winged Cormorant are useless as fish-snaggers, but they propel the diving bird underwater to hook fish and snakes in long curved beaks.

Birders at Linwood were surprised to learn that the seabirds nest on Lanier’s islands or mainland shore. Most knew about Lanier’s Ospreys, often seen on tall trees jutting from shore and on the green trusses of Bolding Bridge on Dawsonville Highway at the Hall-Forsyth county line.

Migrating ducks, such as Hooded Mergansers, stop in occasionally. Anglers see flocks with their white-marked hoods floating on the lake in early spring.

Sea Gulls not only swoop and dip into Lanier year round, they also forage around shopping center parking lots and landfills. “A gull can go anywhere and do everything,” Schmalz said, joking about their versatility. “When I die, I want to come back as a gull … they can do everything.”

Schmalz reported an incredible sighting of Loons at Tidwell Park in the past. About 600 of the spotted aquatic birds known for their haunting wail flocked to the park for a brief stop in winter.

“The lake is great for overwintering water fowl,” Schmalz said, but it also has a sad downside. Most of its 38,000 acres were wooded before Buford Dam was built. The flooding of forest-

land destroyed bird and wildlife habitat and created 697 miles of shoreline, or edges. Predators – not just birds of prey, but snakes, possums, and raccoons – stalk birds and raid nests on Lanier’s edges. Schmalz remarked for that reason, she does not like edges.

The life-long birder likened the area’s natural environment to a giant hamburger. Deciduous trees, vines, conifers, water, and brambles are “like condiments on a burger.” Take those away and the burger is flavorless.

Sights and sounds of Linwood’s feathered inhabitants spiced up the morning. A male Bluebird flitted from the top of a park sign to a nearby tree. Binoculars focused toward the jungleesque yak of a Pileated Woodpecker near the native plant garden. A brilliant Indigo Bunting clung to budding blackberry

vines. Mourning Doves coo-ed and a Red Bellied woodpecker quirrrr-ed. An American Redstart sounded forth with its squeaky tsweet, tsweet as birders strained to view the orange and black warbler. A Wood Thrush piped in its own melodic trill. A rare Louisiana Waterthrush heralded its location near the creek. Grosbeaks, Towhees, and Cardinals foraged in the brambles. The keer-keer of a Red Shouldered Hawk alerted all below that the predator was on the hunt.

Newcomer Sasha Comer was amazed at the variety of birds near her Lanier-area abode.

Avian discoveries bring her peace. “I find (bird watching) very relaxing. It brings me closer to what I love most – the outdoors.” The diverse ecosystem of the lake seems to bring birds close to what they love, too.

Pine beetles: Turning an issue into an opportunity Take a look around your yard, particularly toward the top of your trees. If you have pines – and most of us do – be aware of the health of your trees. Over the past decade Georgia pines have been dying because of pine beetles. Many people who live along the Corps’ property around Lake Lanier have especially been affected. Tell-tale signs are yellowing needles, or even brown ones in the advanced stages, and bark that is hard to remove from the tree when it’s struck by a hatchet.

According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, the chances of infestation are increased by stressors on the trees, including drought, age or lightning strikes. Although we have not officially been under drought conditions for the past several years, infestations can be present.

It’s advisable to have infected trees removed.

At my own home, we discovered a very tall – and well on the way to being dead – pine near the powerlines at the front of our lot.

It posed a number of issues: first, it was a danger to the powerlines along the street; second, as it died, it dropped needles, cones and branches; and third, with the

I was amazed at the number of “tree men” who stopped by almost weekly with offers to remove this tree. We had fliers in our mailbox or left on the driveway. Mostly, they were guys with pick-up trucks and chain saws, but because of safety and insurance issues, we brought in a professional arborist.

Allen Graham with ArborOne Trees had removed about 15 pesky sweetgums from our back yard last year without harming a single bush or shrub. We had gotten estimates from other services, but they all cringed at the site of

our “over-landscaped” property and golf-course-quality lawn.

So when this dead pine presented itself, we called Allen again. We walked our property and decided to go ahead and remove all the pines at the front of the property along the powerlines, as well as many of the sweetgum trees shading our vegetable and flower gardens.

For a little over two days, the sounds of chain saws, bucket trucks and chippers filled the air as tree after tree came down. In the tricky areas, a 30-foot-tall crane was brought in to lift the trees straight up and out of harm’s way. The four-man crew included two trained tree-climbers who put on harnesses and spiked shoes to scurry to the tops and remove branches before the trunks came down. It was all well-orchestrated, like watching a staged ballet as the men methodically took off limbs, cut trunks into manageable sections and stacked them neatly.

Pine beetles are hard to detect.

They’re about the size of a gnat.

They lay their eggs under the bark of the trees and sometimes leave behind little piles of dust from boring into the trunk. How-

ever, once you see that a tree is on its way out, it’s best to remove it.

Dead limbs can be snapped off during high winds or ice storms, causing more damage and expense than the cost of removal.

We also realized a wonderful side benefit to having all these trees removed. Now I make regular trips to area nurseries and gardening websites to find more plants for my yard. With the added sunny areas, I can’t wait until fall to put in more shrubs and “good trees.”

Pan Am Games officials praised Gainesville Hall ‘96, House

By Jane Harrison Officials from the Pan Am Games praised the organization behind the Olympic qualifier and the revamped 1996 Olympic site and foresee future international competition at Lake Lanier Olympic Park.

“I think it went very well with the organization by Lake Lanier and (venue manager) Morgan House,” said Dwight Corbin, First Vice-President of the Pan American Canoe Federation.

“Hospitality was excellent and very accommodating. If anyone had a question there was somebody to answer it or find someone who could,” added Corbin, who also served as deputy chief official. He commended Gainesville Hall ’96 for instigating a $1.1 million renovation that included a bridge from the park plaza to the officials’ post in the tower. “The improvements are something to be proud of,” he remarked. He encouraged GH ’96 to take advantage of the venue’s proven international success by bidding on future events, including a Junior Worlds Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championship.

A laid-back look at the natural, historical Myrtle Beach South Carolinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Myrtle Beach is renowned for a carnival atmosphere of putt putt golf, 60 miles of beaches, franchise eateries and many nice public golf courses, but I was lucky enough to find a different world within this artificial madness! With a couple of exceptions, this magical revelation was centered around the old fishing village of Murrells Inlet.

Even before beginning my exploration of the area, I was lucky enough to find the perfect place to stay. The Inlet Sports Lodge (www.inletsportslodge.com) is located ideally near the center of Murrells Inlet, and despite being slightly off the main roads, it is one of my best lodging experiences ever. The staff is friendly, very efficient and the rooms are spacious with useful amenities.

Visitors soon discover that Murrells Inlet is a laid-back village with a history that includes the famous pirate Blackbeard ... plus the invention of hushpuppies. Local ghost stories abound in the community, and the town is complete with colorful characters ... many of whom still make a living from the bounty of the sea.

The best place to immerse yourself into this one of a kind place is by walking the Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk that is dotted with open air restaurants and bars along a wooden boardwalk next to moored fishing boats. My favorite of these places is the Dead Dog Saloon, which offers a cornucopia of artifacts and memorabilia hanging on walls or from the ceiling throughout the establishment. Nevertheless, from the honey butter covered hushpuppies to the fresh seafood ... to the constant party atmosphere that is complete with live music, the Dead Dog Saloon is the prime spot to spend an unforgettable evening in Murrells Inlet.

Using the Inlet Sports Lodge as a base, I was able to find and experience many other wonderful adventures. Since I love being in or close to the water and nature, I found a way to fish and explore with the help of the friendly folks at the Black River Outdoor Center (www.blackriveroutdoors. com). Their guided kayak eco tours through the marshes or the Waccamaw River are both educational and picturesque, and their kayak fishing guides can take you into shallow areas where the big fish go to feed.

green.org) that boasts many interesting sculptures and colorful gardens. However, I was more attracted to their Lowcountry Zoo which is home to many wild species of birds, animals and reptiles that can be viewed at very close range.

The real natural jewel of the Myrtle Beach area is Huntington Beach State Park (www.huntingtonbeachstatepark.net)with a perfect combination of quiet beaches, salt marshes, coastal woods, walking trails, a stone castle and an abundance of wildlife and birds.

The stone castle inside the park is a Moorish style structure named Atalaya by artist, Anna Hyatt Huntington. The castle is full of interesting rooms where the Huntingtons and their staff lived and Mrs. Huntington painted.

No trip to the Myrtle Beach area would be complete without sampling one of the fabulous golf courses, and I found probably the best public golf course I have ever played. Though it was necessary to drive almost an hour to the

northern shore of Myrtle Beach, the Tidewater Golf Club (www.tidewatergolf.com) was well worth the drive. It has been named one of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top 100 Public Courses by Golf Digest multiple times and is often among the top 10 courses in South Carolina. All those honors are fine, but they pale in comparison to the beauty visitors see when playing this ocean course!

During my visit to Myrtle Beach this time, I purposely stayed away from the high rises, roller coasters, putt putt golf and neon lights. Instead, I discovered Along the Murrells Inlet marsh walk. a natural world of outdoor beauty near a village full of history, ghosts and unforgettable characters.
