Organization plans to break ground this summer, open camp in two years By Pamela A. Keene A federal court decision in mid-February has paved the way for the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta to finally break ground on a facility at Bethel Park in Forsyth County. The battle among Forsyth County, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the YMCA has continued since 2003, when the YMCA approached the Corps of Engineers about leasing the 62-acre park for a residential camp. Since that time, the controversy has included court battles, public forums and various other activities. The Corps was set to award the lease to the YMCA in 2006, but local residents adjacent to Bethel Park complained to the Forsyth County Commission, who then made its own proposal in 2007 for taking over management of the park and develop a 75-site campground with a dayuse area. Forsyth County contended that it should have been given first rights to lease the property. As a result, two proposals were proffered – one from the YMCA and one from Forsyth

County. The Corps published drafts of both proposals in January 2008 and invited the public to comment. The matter seems to be all but settled following the February 14, 2011, ruling by the US 11th Circuit Court of Appeals that denied Forsyth County’s appeal to block the lease by the YMCA. “The Court of Appeals has sent the matter back to District Court, if that’s what Forsyth County wants to do,” said Pat Robbins with the Corps of Engineers Mobile District Office. Forsyth County’s position is still open on the case, according to County Attorney Ken Jarrard. “Forsyth County has not closed the door on any options, but is currently in dialog with the Corps on a proposal to resolve the case,” Jarrard said. The YMCA will apply for initial permitting within 90 days and is targeting groundbreaking for sometime in early to mid-summer. The initial phase involves about $8 million in funding toward the overall long-term $20

million capital improvement investment. When complete, the camp will include cabins, a marina, sports fields, dining hall, amphitheater, chapel, outdoor pool and a number of administrative and support buildings. Currently, the park has no facilities. “We anticipate having some

programs as early as the summer of this year using existing conditions at the park for youth development and youth leadership,” said Dan Pile, senior vice president of operations for the Metro Atlanta YMCA. “We may also offer some camping for children See Bethel, page 12

Polar Plunge raises big bucks for Special Olympics Georgia

By Pamela A. Keene More than 300 people braved the cold weather in February to take the plunge for a good cause. The second annual Polar Plunge raised more than $70,000 for Special Olympics Georgia. The event was held at Lake Lanier Islands. “It was a beautiful day at the lake,” said Allison Kaczenski with Special Olympics Georgia. “We doubled the number of participants from last year and everyone had a really fun time.” The event took place near Sunset Cove. Radio sponsor Star94 brought out the crowds who were looking for something to do that was out of the ordinary.

The Polar Plunge is a trademark event for Special Olympics. It was begun in Georgia and Florida in 2010, but it has been a big success in other states for a number of years. The site included warming tents for participants, as well as warm beverages. The fire pits also saw a great deal of activity. There were also dunking booths, a bounce house for kids, face painting and fair hair activities. The Georgia Aquarium sponsored a sand-castle-building contest. Many people came in costume, including a group of Secret Ser-

vice agents, who dressed in suits and ties for their plunge. Other people dressed as Captain America, big pickles and characters from the “Wizard of Oz.” “As long as the costumes were family friendly, the sky was the limit,” Kaczenski said. Traditionally held the third Saturday in February, the event was sponsored by Iron Sky, State Farm, The Tate Family Foundation, Marietta Wrecker, Star94, Home City Ice, BassPro Shops, Silvad Promotions, Dutch Walters Photography and Lake Lanier Islands.

Tie on grubs for more action when fishing this spring I often wonder what fishermen would choose if they were limited to only one lure type for the rest of their angling days. No one would be allowed to cop out and say “soft plastic lures” or “plugs.” If I had only one to choose for sheer fish catching versatility 12 months of the year I would go with the often overlooked and mostly out of vogue soft plastic grub. It has virtually no limits in use. In smaller forms these are deadly on panfish. In larger versions, these readily elicit strikes from both bass and stripers. There’s really no gamefish that a grub will not catch. If you’re fishing in ideal conditions and the fish are cooperative, they will definitely keep a bend in your rod. As it often goes, conditions are not ideal and your quarry is in a finicky mood. During this spring time of year bite breaking cold fronts and post spawn blues are facts of life. These are the conditions in which grubs really shine. They offer a subtle action that few fish can resist even when off the feed. Switching to these baits early when tough times are signaled can really save the day. I particularly love fishing grubs because they are so easy to use.

be targeted. Three inch grubs tend to pair very well with 1/8th ounce lead heads. These are great for casting to the shallows and probing depths down to about 10 feet. Don’t forget that super heavy tungsten heads are available these days and can allow a smaller bait to be effectively fished at deeper depths. If you want to go deeper than 10 feet with a swimming type grub, go with a 3/16th or 1/4th ounce head. Be sure to look at the overall presentation; the lead head should not overpower the soft plastic body. Don’t forget that lighter line can also help you fish deeper depths due to smaller diameter. When choosing jig heads, be sure to gauge the hook shank length as compared to the body of the bait. You want the bend to protrude from the plastic about three quarters down the body length. Nothing can ruin my confidence in a grub more than a hook set up that is either too long or too short when compared to the body. This leads us to the age old debate of “tail down or tail up?” I am in the “tail up” camp and rig the plastic bodies in that position. It’s certain that no discussion of rigging these baits would be complete without

mention of always tying a loop knot to the lure. This allows consistent presentation at a perfect angle with no knot binding on the hook eye. If you don’t know how to tie a good loop knot, try an internet search and you’ll quickly be in business. Spinning tackle is preferable If our warm weather trend continues, the shallows will probably be filled with bass in early April. For a couple of weeks, it seems as if anglers can do no wrong when it comes to putting fish in the boat. And then, over the course of a week, things change radically. Suddenly, it’s hard to buy a bite in areas that were previously red hot. The fish are still close by and will respond to a change in tactics. Fishing grubs for these post-spawn bass is a highly effective and time honored technique on north Georgia reservoirs. A three inch model is a great all around choice. Some four inch models work exceptionally well. My personal favorite is a four inch Tripple Ripple. This bait has a slender body along with a longer ratio of tail length. This characteristic, along with the tricut tail give it superior action on See Fishing, page 10

Lanier Fishing Report

Continued from Page 8 the slowest retrieve. Pair your favorite with a one eighth ounce ball type lead head. Be sure to pick the style designed for rigging grubs versus the models used to rig shakey head plastic worms. Keep your boat out a bit and target the five to 10 foot depth with a very slow retrieve. Slow tapering points and reef poles are often the most productive areas. During recent drought years, you may have marked areas with lots of stumps on your map or saved them as GPS way points. Combine this cover with the structure of a point or hump and you have a real hot spot. One key factor is to cover as much water as possible and keep your bait out there in the strike zone. When it comes to tackle, spinning gear is preferable. This allows you to easily handle six pound test line which yields a more natural presentation and more strikes. Any reel that has a smooth drag will work fine. While a standard six and a half foot medium action rod will do the job, a medium light action is a much better choice for this finesse style presentation. Some of the technique specific rods designed for drop shotting work very well for a grub fishing application. It’s well worth noting that most strikes initially feel like a pecking sensation. Resist the natural urge to set the hook at this time. Wait two or three seconds longer until you feel a slight heaviness that seems much like a weed on your lure. That’s the time to set

the hook with a sideways sweeping motion while reeling in at the same time. Don’t forget swim baits When it comes to colors available in the simple curly tail grub, choices can be bewildering. They will all work to one degree or another. I am a big grub fan but actually only stock three colors in my tackle box. These are white pearl, chartreuse, and pumpkinseed with a chartreuse tail. These will get the job done. It’s worth noting that if you’re looking for an extra fish or two, you should never pass up bridge pilings. These nearly always hold bass and swimming a grub is a great way to pick up these suspended fish. You can even catch them with boat traffic passing to and fro; they are conditioned to this type of activity. It’s pretty well known that bass often suspend under boat docks. This is especially true in lakes that have little natural vegetation. Docks attract minnows and panfish which in turn attract the gamefish. We’ve all seen this. Subtle presentation of a grub swimming along beside the dock will tempt bass that have seen too many spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Anglers also have the advantage of greater depth versatility with this lure type. The rate of fall will probably be about a foot per second so it’s a simple matter to count down to the depth of choice. If you need to probe depths deeper than 10 feet, consider See Fishing, page 12

Elevation: Just over 1070 or about a foot below full pool. Surface Temperature: Approximately 50 to 53 degrees at press time. Clarity: Absolutely normal. Clear in most areas with light color in upper tributaries. Spring rains will typically add color to the tributaries. Bass fishing has been good. It looks as if we’re shaping up for an early spring so keep your fingers crossed. The strong warming trend that took hold in late February has been a catalyst for pretty good catch rates among most anglers. Although numbers of fish are not in the shallows, bass are definitely moving up from deeper waters and they are active. Fish are being caught at mixed depths from five feet down to 20 feet. Secondary points in any creek are worth checking out. If you saved a record of super looking cover when the lake was low, this is the time to visit those spots again. Suspending jerkbaits have been producing strikes so make sure to try your favorite models fished slowly with long pauses. Early in the year models such as the Pointer DD and Stay-See are perfect for targeting deeper fish. Any color that resembles a shad or herring will do the trick. When the jerkbaits are not working, anglers are having success on the shakey head worm rig which is a Lanier go-to any time of the year. If you need to fish the deeper end of the strike zone, this is a very sound choice. Watermelon, green pumpkin, and sand color finesse style worms will all get bites. Some anglers are also scoring by slow rolling a Fish Head Spin rigged with a Super Fluke Junior in these same areas. This pattern should continue through the month with bass progressing a shallow movement in greater numbers. Striper fishing has been fair to good. It’s time to move up the creeks as linesides go through mock spawning runs. Some of the largest fish are caught this time of year so make sure your tackle is ready to tangle with a trophy. The number one tactic is to present live herring or shad with no weight on flat lines. Large size live baits can be particularly effective for the biggest stripers. Trail these about 75 feet behind the boat. Planer boards can allow you to fish four lines an once with the advantage of getting one line closer to the bank. Stripers will often roam in and out of this shallow water zone. Always cast while fishing live baits in the creeks. Three eighths ounce white bucktail jigs tipped with curly tail or fluke style trailers are always good choices. A standard Super Fluke in white pearl or albino fished with no weight is great for targeting shallow areas near the banks. Be ready with one bucktail rod and another rigged with your weightless plastic.

The resort is modifying the kitchen at the Sunset Cove Beach Café to better serve customers and reduce wait times. Additionally, an extension is being added to the dock to handle more boats. • Bethel Continued from Page 2 and families.” Pile said that the organization is pleased to be moving forward on the project. “All of the community’s concerns have been factored into our plan and we intend to deliver on our promises,” Pile said. “Now we can spend our resources working with children rather than on legal matters.”

• Fishing Continued from Page 10 switching to a heavier head of 3/16th ounce paired with a larger plastic body. A step up to eight pound test line and a medium action spinning rig would be in order as well to keep overall balance. Although, I’ve only mentioned the basic curly tail grub, there is another very productive style to consider. Paddle tail grubs have been around a long time. They do an excellent job of mimicking baitfish. In the past few years, these have morphed into one of the hottest tackle trends in the last 10 years – swim baits. Like their simpler cousins, they’re most effective when presented with a simple slow and steady retrieve. You should definitely have a few of these. Many people mistakenly believe that they will only catch smaller bass on basic three and four inch grubs. The fact is you will likely be catching signif-

icantly more fish and through volume some will be smaller but the better fish do take the bait as well. You’ll probably catch just as many good fish along with a way more action in the course of a day. What’s not to like about that? If you’re serious about catching a lot of fish, stock a selection of grubs and lead heads in your

tackle box this season. You’ll be glad you did. Until next month, be safe and enjoy the lake! Tommy Wilkinson is assistant manager for Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Duluth. MORE INFO: twilkinson@basspro.com

Don’t forget state-required equipment for your boat This past week we have enjoyed Spring-like temperatures that make us the envy of many in the colder regions of our country. Weather that most of us prefer before taking our boats out of “moth balls” certainly is not far away. The next few weeks will be a perfect time to make a check of state required equipment to make sure you have everything you need before venturing out onto the water. Some equipment is dated, so that needs to be checked as well. Requirements do vary according to the length of your vessel. In this article I will cover only the categories of equipment, since space will not allow a complete discussion of all the information related to each category. For a complete explanation of all the Georgia laws covering equipment, please refer to the “Handbook of Georgia Boating Laws and Responsibilities” which is published annually by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The booklets are available at boating supply stores, marinas and many marine dealers. The Coast Guard Auxiliary has a program to distribute these and other safe boating material to these types of businesses. We also

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Weekend regattas expected to draw 2,000 rowers By Jane Harrison Gainesville is on a “row” this month with thousands of rowers flocking to the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue for training and a double regatta weekend March 26 and 27. The John Hunter and Lanier Sprints regattas culminate spring training for many collegiate crews who are spending their spring break on Lanier. About 1,500 athletes are expected to compete in the March 26 John Hunter Regatta, said Lake Lanier Rowing Club Executive Director/Head Coach Jim Pickens. LLRC members assist in the event that is officially hosted by Georgia Tech and Saint Andrews rowing organizations. The number of participants in this year’s regatta is expected to match last year’s, which was the largest in the 24-year history of the event. About 30 college crews and 16 junior club and scholastic teams competed in 2010. Some crews are expected to stay over for the March 27 Lanier Sprints, which adds masters and open categories. LLRC is in charge of the Sunday regatta. Pickens estimated it would attract about half the number of participants as John Hunter. The regatta weekend has surged in popularity as

water has flowed back into the formerly droughtstricken lake. Low lake level contributed to cancellation of the back-to-back regattas in 2008. The regattas have also grown since 2009 under Pickens’s LLRC leadership and his connections with collegiate coaches through his previous college rowing experiences at the University of Mary Washington. Pickens has helped put LLOV back on the regatta map by reviving the John Hunter/Lanier Sprints weekend and by successfully bidding to host two more big rowing championships in May. The Southeast Junior Regional Championship is set for May 14-15, followed by the May 28-29 American Collegiate Rowing Association Championship. The rowing weekends bring thousands of visitors to Gainesville and create a substantial positive economic impact. The 2010 John Hunter/Lanier Sprints regattas booked 50 to 75 percent of Gainesville hotel rooms, according to Gainesville Convention and Facilities Department statistics. Travelers on Clarks Bridge Road on March 2627 may expect delays as the LLOV parking lots fill up and spillover lots open up in yards near the venue. The boat ramp at Clarks Bridge Park will be closed both days from 6 a.m. until around 6 p.m.

University of Michigan, Canadian National crews practice on Lanier Crowds begin arriving to take advantage of spring break warmth this month By Jane Harrison The University of Michigan crew and the Canadian National Women’s crew came off the water the last Sunday in February with nothing but praise for Lake Lanier. “This is great,” said Michigan crew officer Patrick Ronald. He said the expansive lake welcomed the 83-member crew into a wide, blue yonder with plenty of room for open rowing. The weather didn’t hurt, either, as the temperature hit near 70 for their first weekend of spring break practice. The top rated collegiate crew along with 23 Olympic-potential Canadian women were among the highest level competitive rowers stroking on Lake Lanier for early season on-the-water training. They disembarked before crowds hit this month. About 600 rowers from 13 colleges and schools were expected to set oars at the Olympic venue between March 5 and 19. “Both weeks are stacked,” said Jim Pickens, Executive Director/Head Coach of the Lake Lanier Rowing Club. The crews, many from northern schools and colleges, feel drawn by the traditionally warmer waters of Lake Lanier and the Olympic legacy that has attracted thousands of rowers for spring break training since 1996. The visit back to Lanier was a nostalgic one for Canadian Women’s National Head Coach Al Morrow. “I was here 14 years ago,” said Morrow, who coached gold, silver and bronze medalist Canadian crews in the 1996 Olympics. “It’s great to see the site still being viable,” he said. He said he planned his crew’s spring practice on Lanier after Pickens contacted him. “I did the research first,” he said, by checking weather data and talking with other coaches about the venue and area hospitality. His references reported positive experiences at the venue and in Gainesville. He booked rooms at the Holiday Inn and arranged crew meals at Brenau University. When he told Pickens his boats needed a buoyed line to row

the Olympic course, the LLRC coach set out to put it in that day. “He’s been great,” Morrow said. Michigan Head Coach Gregg Hartsuff related similar sentiments. “With the biggest men’s team in the country, we need space,” he said. The 25-milelong lake and 4,000 meter straightaway give his oars plenty of room to work. “It’s great water to train on,” said Hartsuff. He brought his crew back to train on Lanier despite the chilly reception the water gave them last year when a thin layer of ice shimmered on the surface. Other “perks” brought them back, Hartsuff said. Among those was the designation of the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue as site of the major collegiate club championship May 28-29. It’s advantageous to get familiar with the competition course, Hartsuff said. The University of Michigan will play host to the American Collegiate Rowing Association regatta, which Hartsuff expects will draw 1,500 athletes, some of whom he believes will go on to become See Spring break, page 17

Lula Bridge Race to test endurance By Jane Harrison Paddlers can get their first test of the season March 19 in the Lula Bridge Race, organized by the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. The annual event traditionally brings endurance paddlers to the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue to compete in 25-, 10-, and 5-kilometer races. A throng of local juniors, seniors and masters LCKC paddlers, plus other nationally known marathon paddlers, are expected

to compete. A number of recreational paddlers, including some on sea kayaks, have taken on the long distance races in past years. Racers choose between the 25K, from the Olympic course to Lula Bridge and back, or a laps course for the shorter distances. Past competitors in the 25K have included USA Canoe/Kayak marathon veterans Reid Hyle, of Florida, Abel Hastings, from North Carolina, and LCKC’s own

John DePalma. LCKC sprint paddler and Olympic hopeful Morgan House is a prior winner. Races start at 10 a.m. Athlete check in is between 8 and 9:15 a.m., with an athlete meeting at 9:30 at the base of the finish tower. Registration is $20 by March 16, $25 after. MORE INFO: www.lckc.org

Olympic rowers. The venue’s selection for high profile regattas is bringing more crews to LLOV to practice. Pickens, though thrilled with the venue’s popularity and success in drawing training crews and regattas, braced for the pressure the aging facility will face through May. “Things at the venue tend to break,” he said, when large numbers of people frequent the restrooms and use the motorboats to monitor practices. When Canadian Coach Morrow surveyed the wooden docks

and motor boats coaches and officials use to monitor rowers, it was like a trip back in time. Last month his rowers launched their boats from the original Olympic docks, worn and patched, but still usable. The motor boats bore blue, faded “1996 Olympics” logos. They still run, but need some occasional coaching. Most world class facilities now have durable, plastic docks and a more modern fleet of motor boats, Morrow said. Nonetheless, he said, LLOV makes good use of what it has.

Pickens mentioned the need for dock replacement and upgrades in regatta equipment as the club readies for big rowing championships in May and future regattas that may sprout from success this year. Although city and county officials have pledged support of the facility, none have come forth with funding. “It’s about time they put their money where their mouth is,” Pickens said. Athlete of the Month

LLRC’s Kieran Kaiser wins erg sprint By Jane Harrison Name: Kieran Kaiser Age: 17 School: Junior at Riverside Military Academy. Family: Parents Charlene and Gerard Kaiser, plus a 20-year-old sister. Residence when not at RMA: His family home in Snellville. Why he rows: “My dad rowed when he was in college for a City of Baltimore club crew. I thought I’d Kaiser try it out. It’s a good fit for me,” he said. What he likes most about rowing: “It’s very peaceful. On the water, a mysterious calm comes over you. It’s very relaxing,” he said. Accomplishments: Kaiser won the Men’s Junior Novice category at the Atlanta Erg Sprints last month. He beat out other competitors in a virtual 2-kilometer race on ergometers (stationary rowing machines). He doubled up with a Riverside teammate to take third place in the collegiate erg sprint race. His thoughts on winning: “I was exhilarated. I did not think I would do that well after I saw I was placed third or fourth” on the personal record sheet posted at the event. “It was hard, but I had my dad there to help,” he said. Kaiser reported his dad acted as an erg coxswain, urging him to maintain a strong rhythm. It takes practice: “I practice with the team six times a week and run just about every day,” Kaiser said. He hits the erg when he’s away from school, too, on an ergometer at his Snellville home. Goals: Kaiser said he would like to continue rowing on a Division 1 or 2 college or club crew after he graduates. His ultimate goal is to attend the Coast Guard Academy and row on the Bears’ crew. His next competition: Kaiser expects to compete in both the John Hunter and Lanier Sprints regattas at the Lake Lanier Olympic See Athlete, page 40

Spring is sprung, so get your boat ready Finally, we are having some good weather. I’m tired of the cold, ice and snow. I moved south from Northern Wisconsin where we didn’t shovel snow. We tunneled through snowdrifts and used out snowmobiles for transportation. It worked out all right, but I was much younger then. So now I remember my time in Florida where we could be on or in the water anytime of the year. Now with this warmer weather, boaters, whether they are fishermen, cruisers, or watersports enthusiasts all are thinking of that day we launch the boat or leave the boat slip. So here’s a question: Is your boat ready? Are you guilty of parking it last fall and not winterizing? If so, you have work to do. Also, put some money aside because you will be the one broken down. Those that followed winterizing instructions in this column last fall simply need to wash your boat, add some new stabilizer to your fuel tank and go have fun. You might want to have the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary give you a boat inspection so you know your boat is 100 percent safe. If you plan on some offshore trips, make sure you have an “EPIRB” such as the “Spot” models so if you do get in trouble the U. S. Coast Guard can find you. Don’t be one of this year’s boating statistics. Whether you are going off shore or on Lake Lanier, file a float plan or tell someone where you are going and when they can expect you to return. Start out informed and prepared and you will have a safe boating season. New scholarships available Can you believe it, now if your son or daughter is headed to college and their favorite sport is fishing or water-skiing they might well qualify for a scholarship. That’s right … it’s not a misprint. As many as 20 southern colleges support water-skiing and fishing teams which offer scholarships. Auburn won the Inaugural College Fishing Classic. This year the Louisiana State University Tigers will face off against reigning Champion University of Alabama Crimson Tide on Louisiana’s Lake Verret on February 20, 2011 to determine the next Bassmaster College Classic Champion. I don’t know if any of the participants are on a scholarship, but in past articles more than 10 schools were offering

Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments

them. Water-skiing and most likely wakeboarding have scholarships at various colleges and universities. In 1958 I was captain of the St. Petersburg Junior College Ski Team which won the World InterCollegiate Championship, as Dick Pope of Cypress Gardens called it. We didn’t have scholarships then, but Carl Kiekhaeffer (founder of Mercury Outboards) gave us a boat and a jump for practice. My college was paid for by skiing in shows or my own ski shows. Now there are probably 10 or more colleges offering some type of scholarship in this sport. If you have a son or daughter or know of a talented youngster in either of these sports have them go online with various southern schools to see what they have to offer. New affordable sport boat Back in the ’60s Don Arronow of Ocean Racing fame, and also founder of Magnum, Donzi, Cigarette, and Blue Thunder boats built a 16’ Donzi sport boat powered with a Holman-Moody engine with inboard-outboard drive. It instantly became the must have boat among go fast boats. If you were a waterfront homeowner in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, or West Palm Beach and didn’t have a 16foot Donzi on your boat davits you were not considered in the power boating crowd. They became highly collectible. Several years ago I surveyed one in Atlanta that brought back memories. Most boats that were in competition usually cost too much or didn’t perform. Now Stingray is introducing its 225 SX Sport boat which could be this decade’s Donzi 16. Stingray boats are noted for going faster with less engine, due to its Z-Plane patented hull design. They almost always outperform big block more expensive boats with a Stingray comparable hull and a smaller displacement engine. This new boat is sport’s car red, with grated hood scoop, low profile tinted windshield and a black racing stripe. It defines the cliché, it looks fast just sitting still.

Power is a catalyst-equipped 320 H.P. 6.2 liter multiport injection MerCruiser with a Bravo drive and a three-blade laser prop. Speed is a shade over 60 M.P.H. and I imagine if you played with the props you could see 65 M.P.H. plus. The cockpit features two captains chairs with comfortable aft seats. The stern offers a generous swim platform with a built-in-ladder and transom grab rails. The engine compartment is wide open and provides excellent maintenance access. Now here is the best part; the price is $47,500, not $75,000 to $100,000 for a big block go fast. Remember, a smaller engine cost less to run. So if you are into go fast cruising this just might be the boat for you. Contact Stingray Boats at 843 383-4507 or www.stingrayboats.com. More on ethanol The National Marine Manufacturers Association is taking the EPA to court over the 15 percent ethanol in fuel increase. They state that the EPA has not fulfilled its statutory obligations to ensure the safe introduction of E-15. The EPA states the E-15 will be for vehicles and vessels built after 2007. NMMA states in its lawsuit that the approval of E-15 is for only certain vessels and vehicles and violates the federal Clean Air Act. Meanwhile many manufacturers are adding Stabil Ethanol treatment to their boats when they leave the factory and they recommend its use when you top off your tanks. Chris-Craft has gone so far as to state this in their advertising. They also state it will also help in having less engine problems. Most service problems now come from old fuel that has not been treated. If you have any questions contact your dealer’s service manager and follow his advice and you should have trouble free cruising. Sailing Prams Recently I was reminded of Clearwater, Florida’s Pram fleet that taught kids how to sail. The Optimist Pram as it was called was designed by Clarke Mills a noted shipwright from Clearwater. They were 8 feet long, with a rudder, dagger-board, and mast with single sail. Back in the 1950s they sold for around $100. Local business men bought them and put their name on the boat or sail. The youngsters would be put in charge of a boat and they would have races on Clearwater

Bay on the weekends. It was quite a sight, 25-30 boats with different color sails and boats. They sailed from the Pram Shed on Clearwater Beach. Many a youngster learned sailing and safe boating from this experience. Maybe it would be a worthwhile project for some organization to take on at Lake Lanier or surrounding towns with reservoirs. I’ll bet even today if you go to Clearwater’s Chamber of Commerce web page there will be a photo of those prams sailing. Buying a used boat Remember, if you are going to buy a used boat this spring, find out about its maintenance. Get the record log if possible. Be sure to have a sea trial and survey for your protection. In the end it will save you money. If you are buy-

ing a PWC or a bass boat go to the dealer’s service manager and have him check out the boat. You might have to pass a few boats up because of the problems they have, but in the long run it will save you money and keep your family safe. World Record Raft Up Don’t forget the World Record Raft Up at Lake Lanier on June 11, 2011. They will be going for the Guinness Book of World Records’ largest tie up in honor of National Marina Day For more information go to www.lanierworldrecord.com Be courteous on the water and I hope to see you out there. • USCGA Continued from Page 15 you are, especially at night or in fog. Fire extinguishers Most vessels are required to have a Type B fire extinguisher(s) on board, in serviceable condition, and readily available, not in a box hidden away in some compartment. Everyone on board should know where they are located and how to use them. Fire has a tendency to come at you quickly and without warning. The size and number of fire extinguishers required varies with the size of your vessel. I was discussing this subject with an “old salt” at a dock on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway several years ago and he made a very profound statement which I never forgot; “You can’t have too many or too large fire extinguishers on board, but you surely can have too few and too small ones.” Make sure the needle on the little round dial on the fire extinguisher is pointed in the “green” zone, indicating that it is ready for use. Ventilation systems The purpose of ventilation systems is to avoid explosions by removing flammable gases. All gasoline powered vessels must have at least two ventilation ducts fitted with cowls to remove fumes. If your vessel is equipped with a power ventilation system, turn it on for at least four minutes both after fueling and before starting your engine. I make it a practice to lift the engine hatch cover and stick my nose in the

engine compartment and give it a good “sniff.” You can learn a lot from that practice. Backfire flame arrestors Because boat engines may backfire, all powerboats (except outboards) that are fueled with gasoline must have a USCG-approved backfire flame arrestor on each carburetor of every engine. Periodically clean the flame arrestor(s) and check for damage. If your vessel has been in the shop for engine repair, check to ensure that the arrestor has been reseated. Mufflers Vessel operators may not hear sound signals or voices if the engine is not properly muffled. The exhaust on every internal combustion engine used on any vessel must be muffled or baffled and water injected (except those engines where the exhaust goes through the lower unit or outdrive) so as to decrease noise. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free Vessel Safety Checks where we check to ensure that your vessel has the proper required equipment and that it is in good working order, and we award you with a windshield decal for your vessel showing that you passed the check. There is no penalty for failing, and we will recheck your vessel after you have made the correction. Roy Crittenden is the Public Affairs Officer for Flotilla 29.

March 2011

It’s been a wild and wacky winter It has certainly been a wild and wacky winter season to say the least. You may recall in my column last September the Climate Prediction Center was forecasting a warmer and drier than average winter. As you well know, it was just the opposite. Then the CPC amended its forecast for February, indicating it would be colder and wetter than average. Again, February turned out to be just the opposite. In fact, temperatures warmed up as fast as I ever seen last after our record cold. It seemed we were shivering one day and then the next day it warmed up and just stayed warm. The trees and flowers began blooming the end of last month and there were record high pollen counts. As we head into March, we head into one of my least favorite months of the year. (April is second on my list!) It is severe storm season, where we see the dreaded super-cell thunderstorms. The super-cell thunderstorm is the type of storm that most often produces tornadoes. These storms also last for a very long time, sometimes more than six or seven hours. A typical “pulse type” thunderstorm we generally see on a hot summer afternoon will “pulse up” and fade within about an hour. A warm air updraft rises, cools and condenses, and with the right conditions, you have an afternoon thunderstorm. The

updraft is below the thunderstorm. After an hour or so, the cool rain Glenn falls through the updraft Burns and overwhelms it and the storm shuts down. Lanier This is not the case with Outlook the super-cell. The updraft of the super-cell thunderstorm is tilted. It goes up through the storm and exits in the rear (called the rear flank downdraft). This tilted updraft/downdraft prevents the rain-cooled air from overwhelming the storm. In addition, there is a tremendous amount of wind shear associated with super-cell thunderstorms. That is the reason they are the primary tornado makers. If you are ever out in your boat and look off in the distance and see what looks like an atomic bomb explosion with a giant anvil top, you are looking at a super-cell. With the warmer weather coming sooner this spring, please remember to carry a weather alert radio with you and make sure you are aware of approaching weather BEFORE you head out on the lake. I assure you, you do not want to be caught in your boat with a super-cell thunderstorm approaching. They also produce 70 mile per hour straight line winds. Be safe my friends and enjoy our early spring, which officially begins, on March 20th at 7:21 pm. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

The 58th Annual Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron Change of Watch was held on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the Dunwoody County Club in Atlanta. The yearly Change of Watch marks the official swearing in of newly elected bridge officers, formally installs the new executive and standing committees, and allows the squadron an opportunity to recognize outstanding service within its membership. Each year the nominating committee diligently works to identify qualified and interested members to serve the squadron as bridge officers and executive committee members. The nominating committee presents their choices to the membership, and voting takes place during the annual meeting in January. Those chosen will lead the ASPS during the upcoming year in the squadron’s ongoing efforts to serve our local boating community by offering basic and advanced boating classes, providing free Vessel Safety Checks to the public, and offering fun and fellowship to members through social events on and off the water. The ASPS believes that boating is safe, smart and fun, and our offi-

The bridge officers for 2010 are: Commander Lisa Herndon, Executive Officer James Jordan, Education Officer Patricia Price, Administrative Officer Glenn LaBoda; Secretary Barbara Tyson, and Treasurer Sandy Robinson. The United States Power Squadron was formed in 1914 and is a private, non-profit educational and social organization. The USPS has no formal association with the military or government agency. The goal of the USPS is to help make boating safer and more enjoyable, and there are over 450 squadrons across the country and in US territories. The Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron was founded on July

16, 1953 with 21 charter members. ASPS is part of the USPS District 17, the “Dixie District,” which covers the inland areas of Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The ASPS chose to have “Sail” officially added to its name in recognition of the large number of sailing enthusiasts among the membership. The squadron offers membership to individuals and families with an interest in recreational boating, and has members of all ages with sailboats, cruisers, bass

boats, pontoons, personal watercraft, and many other types of vessels. Boat ownership is not required, and many members do not own a vessel of their own. Advanced boating classes are available to members, as well as camaraderie with other local boaters. Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron members have access to advanced boating classes, social events on and off the water year round, fun and informative monthly membership meetings, and more.

Boating with man’s best friend from a seadog’s view Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. It has been a year or so since I have had anything really important to share. Recent events however, have me a little hot under the collar, and I felt it was time to pass along a few pointers regarding pets on board based upon my 18 years as a seadog. For the most part, being on the water or traveling by boat is not a natural thing for me, or my four legged friends – we are not water people like some of you. And thanks to my friend Heidi Ganahl, CEO at Camp Bow Wow, there are some things that you can do to make life aboard a more pleasurable experience for both you, and the canine love of your life. First of all, pets need a PDF (Personal Floatation Device). Just like humans, your dog may not be the best swimmer. Even if he can swim well, Fido may not be able

Bob & Carolyn Wilson Cruising Wilsons

to avoid exhaustion or hypothermia if he falls overboard. PFDs are made just for dogs and can be found at most pet stores. In order to guarantee your dog’s PDF takes care of him, make sure the PDF fits securely. Allow Fido time to practice swimming with his PDF so that he can become comfortable with it before getting on the boat. Just like humans, your pets need SPF. Fluffy can get extremely sunburned, especially if she has light colored hair. Dog sunburns can cause the same problems as that of humans: peeling, redness, and even cancer. Skin cancer in pets is much more prevalent than one would assume, so purchasing pet-friendly sun screen can go a long way in protecting their health during your boating adventure. Places that are easy to forget, but prone to burn-

ing are: inside the nostrils, tip of nose, around the lips and the inside of ears for those Dalmatian types with standup ears. One should not assume that Fido is a natural nautical pup. Dogs often prefer stationary areas, like their beloved dog bed. Placing Fido in a moving boat may become a stressful experience if he is not properly prepared. Before the big boating day, introduce him to the boat, and allow him to become acquainted with it while it is still at the dock. Next, start the engine. Those loud noises will probably be a little unfamiliar and hearing it will help him adjust. Next, bring him onto the boat and take him on a short ride, and so that Fido will begin associating his PDF with the boat, it is a good idea to have him practice swimming in it after the boat ride. It’s important to keep your best friend hydrated by bringing fresh drinking water onto the boat. A water bottle that can squirt water directly into Fido’s mouth is a good way to hydrate him during a bumpy boat ride. As Fido may not know how dehydrated he really is, he might not beg for water on his own. If nec-

essary, initiate his water consumption. Be careful not to have too much fun in the sun. Excessive sun exposure can cause heat problems, like heat stroke, if not given a break from the heat and sun. Boat surfaces made of fiberglass are prone to getting extremely hot when in direct sunlight, and Fido will absorb that heat through the pads in his feet. Be sure to establish a shaded area where he can retreat when he is feeling overheated. Depending upon where you are boating, a dip in the water can be a great way to cool him down. Like all good sailors, Fido will need to relieve his bladder, so if possible, designate a spot where he can urinate while aboard. Pet stores sell pads that look just like a patch of grass (some can be a little scratchier than others), but having one on board will help Fido to know where to go, and it is easy cleanup for the owner. Hopefully these suggestions from my friends at Home Buddies will help you to make your on-

Maggie.

board pet experience more enjoyable. And, If you are off on an extended vacation, or business trip without your dog (Oh No!), you may want to visit one of the local Home Buddies stores and learn about all that me and my friends are up to while you’re away. OK Captain Bob, time to go ashore! – written, er, barked by 18year-old Border Collie Maggie, owner of Robert and Carolyn Wilson. - Until next time, Bob & Carolyn Wilson

Real estate sales up in Gainesville, despite Atlanta and national decline By Pamela A. Keene The real estate news isn’t all doom and gloom, despite what the media is reporting. There’s a very bright light at the end of the tunnel as far as residential real estate in the Lake Lanier area, according to various reports from regional and national agencies. “Gainesville and Hall County real estate was great in 2010 compared to our neighbors and is predicted to get even better,” said R. Brad Abernathy with the Abernathy Cochran Group, The Norton Agency. “Hall County outperformed the U.S., Georgia, and all of our neighbors in the percentage increase in the number of single family home sales from 2009 to 2010.” The following data was retrieved from GAMLS, FMLS and NAR. When researching the actual number of single family home sales in 2009 and in 2010, the following areas saw declines: The United States declined 6.4

percent; Georgia declined 8 percent; the northern Atlanta counties of Gwinnett, DeKalb, Barrow, Jackson, Cobb, and Cherokee all saw declines ranging from .5 to 15.4 percent. “The great news is that four northern Atlanta counties saw increases in the number of single family home sales: North Fulton increased 3.3 percent; Dawson County increased 3.9 percent; Forsyth County increased 4.5 percent; and, the brightest spot of all – Hall County – increased 9.7 percent,” Abernathy said. “While real estate has had a rough few years and we now realize how much it is intertwined into our national economy, the three most important words in real estate are still true: location, location, location. Our location is wonderful.” Abernathy cited an article published in early February by CBSMoneyWatch.com that lists the biggest year-over-year winners and losers in real estate in the

United States for 2010. The data used was from Zillow and included the percentage gain or loss in home values for the fourth quarter 2010 versus fourth quarter 2009. The article is quoted as saying, “Despite the tough economy and struggling housing market, these cities managed to increase their home values. Travel and population hotspots like New York, California and Hawaii predictably did well, but there are quite a few surprising cities on the list.” Keller Williams Lanier Partners Realtor Bev Knight said that many area agents are busier now than in the past three years with the number of home sales and that the nation is taking notice of this region of the state. “Recently, Gainesville was listed as No. 2 in the nation behind Ann Arbor, Mich., in increased property values,” she said. “This is excellent news for our area.” Knight said that another reason

Hall County single family home sales increased 9.7 percent in 2009-2010.

for the good numbers Gainesville and Hall County is because of the area’s business-friendly climate. “Area officials are very welcoming to new businesses and interested in overall positive growth.” According to the information, Ann Arbor saw an 11.3 percent gain in highest year-over-year home value, with Gainesville listed with an 8.4 percent gain. Atlanta ranked No. 7 in the highest year-over-year home value, with a net loss of 15.3 percent in the same report.

“We’re definitely headed up from the bottom,” Abernathy said. “While we won’t see the values we had up to 2006, we’ll still see excellent year-over-year values jump. It’s an outstanding trend.” The report does not single out lakefront homes, but Abernathy said that the lake is a certain influence on these positive numbers. “Lake Lanier is in the middle of all these counties that are showing positive numbers,” he said. “Lake Lanier is definitely a draw for the area.”

Coaches’ comments: “Kier is unbelievably committed,” said Bill Morgan, RMA Head Rowing Coach. “He asked for extra workouts and permission to go to the field house to work out on his own,” said the school coach. He added that when RMA announced it was renewing its rowing program, Kaiser was one of the first to sign up. He “sets the pace” for the RMA crew of 16, Morgan said. Jim Pickens, Lake Lanier Rowing Club Head Coach, concurred that Kaiser “sets the bar” for other junior athletes. Pickens, who directs practices for the Riverside crew, added that Kaiser comes to practice every day with a solid work ethic. “He is a focused individual with a high level of maturity. He’s one of our highest achievers. He is sure to go far,” he said. Kieran Kaiser poses on an ergometer. He won the Men's Junior Novice category at the Atlanta Erg Sprints last month. GATC members hike, maintain the trail that binds them By Jane Harrison After treading up, down and around Georgia mountain ridges for nearly 70 miles, three 20something aged hikers and their four dogs stopped by the side of the white-blazed trail to let a group of nine walkers pass by. The large, long-haired dogs, panted, their sides heaving, in the late February sunlight. “How far’re you goin’?” queried one of the nine. “To Maine,” declared a grinning young woman. “I hope you make it,” came the response, “Good luck to you.” The question had come from one who knows the Appalachian Trail from his own 2,181-mile walk from Georgia to Maine in 2007. Other members of his hiking party know it, too, from their own journeys and labors to keep it negotiable for thousands of foot travelers like the thru-hiker hopefuls they met that day. The group of nine consisted of members and prospective members of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, brought together on a bright pre-spring day for the club’s traditional “Run for the Border” trek on AT Section 6 between Dick’s Creek Gap, near

Clayton, and Bly Gap, just across the North Carolina state line. Their group’s leader, a 2005 thruhiker with a fast, long-legged stride, paused intermittently to point out distant blue peaks he knew personally, by name and foot. Along the 17.6 mile, 8-hour round trip, the hikers’ boots occasionally met neatly embedded log footholds and flat rock steps that eased their passage. They walked past water bars, trenched with shovels and edged with logs, that diverted winter rain and snow melt from the tread way. They deliberated about how to fill a sunken section and joined together to pull a fallen tree off the trail. Their efforts on the trail they love helped clear the way for the “March Madness” mass of hikers who will set off from Springer Mountain this month with dreams of thru-hiking to Maine. All 650-plus GATC members have a hand in caring for the trail that binds them. Before becoming a full-fledged member, GATC club applicants labor in one of GATC’s monthly trail maintenance projects, like the one that attracted nearly 70 shovel-ready volunteers to Miller Gap last

month. Prospective members are also required to go on a club hike and attend an orientation meeting. The GATC 2011 yearbook lists about two hikes per weekend, planned a year in advance, ranging from easy day hikes to multiple day backpacking trips. The quarterly orientation meetings at various locations in metro Atlanta and mountain counties acquaint prospective members with GATC organization and mission. Shelley Rose, 2011 GATC president, joined the club in 1987 to find other people to hike with. The Decatur resident grew up in Atlanta and developed a love of the outdoors when she hiked out west with college friends. “I moved back to Atlanta from college and looked for people to hike with … I looked up the GATC in the phone book,” she said. She found a group of avid hikers who crave spiritual renewal outdoors away from concrete and cars. “It’s what I was looking for,” she said of the club, which is one of 35 private organizations in 14 states that work with numerous federal, state, and local agencies to maintain the national scenic walkway. In various treks, Rose has

• Trail Continued from Page 42 GATC members take personal responsibility as section overseers to go out with shovels, sledge hammers and sling blades to care for “their” designated part of the trail. Currently, each individual overseer or overseer couple manages about a mile. But Rose recalled the labor of love she invested in the 4.5 mile section from Hogpen Gap to Low Gap in the early 1990s. “It had not been maintained in a while … it was full of briars and poison ivy. I never did get all the way to Low Gap,” she said. She now takes her trail tools to her .7 mile section near Hogpen Gap three or four times a year to cut brush and smooth the path. “It’s very rewarding,” she said, to be connected by toil and sweat to the trail that replenishes so many souls. Dahlonega resident Tom Lamb said he joined GATC after he set out from the trail’s northern terminus at Mount Katahdin in Maine with his son in 2005. “I saw workers in Maine hauling boulders” on the mountain’s

steep, rock slopes to make way for hikers like his son, who completed the entire route. “I came back and joined (GATC),” he said. He currently manages a 1.7 mile section near Woody Gap in Lumpkin County and is organizing an Appalachian Trail Festival in Dahlonega this month. The March 18-20 Spring on Springer AT Fest celebrates the city’s selection by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy as a trail community. Similar festivals are planned at Amicalola Falls State Park March 5-6 and on March 22 near Blairsville at the Walasi-Yi Mountain Crossing store and hikers’ respite, where the trail crosses through the facility. Lamb said the AT Community designation promotes Dahlonega as a “hiker friendly” town. He hopes the festival will acquaint local people with the AT and people who hike it. “A lot of people in Lumpkin County don’t know it is close by,” he said. He added that some locals have a wary perception of hikers and are not

aware of the money they spend en route to the trail. Lamb said he and GATC members hope the festival and a middle school hiking program will help educate folks “about the heritage of walking and importance of trails.” Millions of people set foot on the AT, he said, some with a dream to walk the whole thing, but most relish a few hours in the wilderness. Boat mechanic relaxes by building models of the past Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Jane Harrison hen marine mechanic Donald Smith first climbed aboard the C.W. Morgan in Mystic Seaport, Conn., he instantly knew his way around the 18th and 19th century whaling vessel. The gazebo on deck that sheltered ailing captains, the device for stripping whale skin and the brick oven that rendered blubber were exactly where he knew they would be. “It was all there. I felt as if I knew this boat. It was amazing to see,” Smith said. Although he had never stepped foot on the wooden deck or rigged a sail of the reputed last U.S. whaler, he felt a strong bond with the boat. He knew it by hand. The Gainesville man had spent hours steaming and bending small wooden boards, tacking tiny nails, and stringing intricate lines making a model of the C.W. Morgan. It took him six months, about a month less than it took the original ship’s builders in 1841. Instead of whaling the Pacific, Smith’s C.W. Morgan will soon be will soon be moored in a Gainesville elementary school library where a friend is librarian. The C.W. Morgan is one of a diverse fleet of model boats Smith has constructed in about 15 years. Each of the half dozen tall ships he’s built poses as a tribute to the world’s sea faring past and a vessel for coping with the stress of today. He keeps

some of his ships. Most, he gives away to family and friends, a gift that signifies patience, skill, endurance and tension washed away. The 54-year-old finds relaxation away from the world of high tech nautical navigation and fussy outboard motors with hours of tedious attention to small details on replicas from the past. “People might ask, ‘why build ships from the past?’ ” Smith said. “Just take time to imagine what it must have been like to sail, fight and live on one of those in a world that’s 70 percent water. When you go aboard, you realize how small and confined the quarters were.” “How could men do the things they did” without the maritime innovations of modern ships, ponders the mechanic who has made a living for 30 years trouble shooting problems on boats from coast to coast in the U.S “It’s stress relief for me to bury my mind in something completely different and abstract from what I do,” Smith said. The boating business brought him to Georgia with his wife, Cat, in 1987 and his work with Lake Lanier-bound vessels make him a familiar fixture on the North Georgia lake. His repair, rigging and delivery of hundreds of boats, first in the late 1980s with Stovall Marine at Bald Ridge Marina and currently with Port Royale Marina, made the long-haired, bearded mechanic a magnet for sputtering motors whenever he was out on the lake.

“I love to go out on Lake Lanier, but whenever I do I run into someone who knows me and it’s ‘Hey, Don, can you help me fix this,” he said. So, now his main boating concentration, outside of his job, is in his tidy shop in a spare bedroom. There, neatly arranged on shelves and work tables, are spools of string and a scaled down reciprocating saw, sanders, files, tweezers, clippers and tiny nails. His current project, a remote controlled model Chris-Craft, a departure from his tall ship collection, awaits his attention. A collection of catalogs and reference books about historic ships attest to the hours of research and materials-gathering Smith devotes prior to putting his hands into months of tedium. He has invested as many as 1,700 hours in one ship, a model of the HMS Victory, British Lord Nelson’s flagship launched in 1765. That model – with hundreds of half inch by quarter inch copper panels gleaming on its keel and 84 cannons smaller than half a tooth pick pointing out from the hull – now commands Smith’s sunny work room. A miniature of the HMS Bounty, a late 1780s British cargo ship whose mutiny off the coast of Tahiti was depicted in a 1962 Marlon Brando movie, sits on a living room bureau awaiting shipment to Smith’s daughter in Washington. Smith built the replica in a year using a kit and some of his own innovations. He regularly “kit

bashes,” or inserts some of his own creativity into his ships. For instance, he delicately placed synthetic green sprouts onto the Bounty’s deck to depict breadfruit plants Captain Bligh and his men collected in Tahiti before the infamous mutiny in April 1789. Last November Smith carried the Bounty to a local delivery company with hopes of sending it across the country to his daughter, C.J, for Christmas. He was told the mini-ocean farer would travel best in a custom-built case. He’s building one. He gave one of his models, The USS Constitution (also known as Old Ironsides) to long time friend Jesse Lee, a former neighbor in Sugar Hill. “He came walking in with it … it was a real honor” to receive it, Lee said. He displays the model on his desk in his home office where visitors marvel at the three-layer hull and fine rigging strung from three masts. It also flaunts copper fastenings, reminiscent of those forged by Paul Revere on the original frigate named by George Washington famed for its service during the War of 1812. “It’s a great ship, I enjoy it,” Lee said. “It’s impressive.” Just as impressive, he said, is the year of labor Smith took to complete it. “He put that much work into it and gave it to a friend.” Smith keeps a written record of his ship-building in a daily log his wife, Cat, gave him in 2001. The pages reflect a lovSee Shore Lines, page 45

• Shore Lines Continued from Page 44 ing history kept out for Cat to read. On each page, Smith writes briefly about his labors, totals his work hours, and writes the words, “Baby, I love you.” “We have a very loving relationship,” Cat Smith said, that traces back 25 years to The Bombay, a bar that Cat tended in Los Angeles. They both related how they met after Cat had spied the boat mechanic near the end of the 75-foot bar eating a sandwich and buried behind a newspaper. “I told my friend, Tracey, that’s the man I’m going to marry,” Cat recalled. She hadn’t even seen his face. Smith had returned to his home state with a couple of duffle bags of clothes and tools to try to mend his former marriage. It wasn’t going well. He wound up in The Bombay every day to grab a lunchtime sandwich and socialize with other boatmen in the evenings. Then, he met Cat. They married about a year later at Lake Tahoe. California-born and raised in Albany, N.Y., Smith has built a life around boats, beginning as a marine mechanic in the Air Force in the late 1970s. After stints in New York, Kansas, Florida, and California, he discovered Georgia in 1987 through his father, who was a magistrate in Carroll County. “I fell in love with it,” he said, especially the low cost of real estate which made his dream of buying a home attain-

able. After he and Cat married, they moved to Sugar Hill, and he went to work for Stovall. They returned briefly to New England, and then settled in North Hall in 2003. Smith had begun his model building with plastic cars when he was a child after a therapist suggested it to help him stop stuttering. It did not help the stuttering then, (he no longer stutters) but he returned to model building in adulthood. Plastic model planes and helicopters adorned the shelves at home until friends gave Smith a model boat kit. Cat said their home décor got an upgrade as classic wooden tall ships replaced plastic models. “Baby, these look great!” she told him when his projects switched from air to sea. She continues to admire his ship building. “I think it’s wonderful he has his man cave. I love to cook. He has time to himself. I have time to myself.” When she looks in on her husband in his shop, she may see his long braid descending down his back, his work glasses hanging near the end of his nose and a beer nearby. A cat, of the feline variety, may perch near the work table, mesmerized by a spinning spool, miniature tools, and deft finger work. For Don Smith, it’s the picture of relaxation.

Budapest is ‘magnificence on the Danube’ Even before I left home for my trip on Eurail through Europe, most of my men friends had told me that I would enjoy the beauty of the women during my visit to Prague ... and they were partly right. I saw many statuesque beauties, but their faces were often hard and unfriendly. In Budapest, it was a different story. The ladies on both sides of the Danube River were tall, gorgeous, friendly, and had faces that made you stare! However, that was just a small part of the beauty, history, and magnificence of Budapest! This old Hungarian city can give you a day-to-day feeling of a large, modern metropolis, or it can take you back to medieval times with a simple turn of the head. The best way to see Budapest is by staying in a central location on the Pest side of the river like the Evergreen Bed and Breakfast (info@evergreenbudapest.hu). They will help with directions to any venue, and even obtain a pass to ride the tour buses. From the Evergreen, you can easily walk to many of the most interesting historical places like the Margarate Bridge that was partly designed by the famous French architect, Gustave Eiffel, the Palatinus Buildings, the Lánczy House, the Haggenmacher House, and the Mahler House, where Gustav Mahler lived when he directed at the Opera House. Only a stone’s throw away stands the Western Railway Station where Gustave Eiffel’s name can still be seen on the iron columns of the glass hall.

MORE INFO: 770-289-1543 JFish51@aol.com www.fishinglanier.com This area also offers evening entertainment, restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops. Probably the most famous of these is the New York Coffee House, which is considered one of the most beautiful coffee houses in Europe. The Parliament, the St.Stephen’s Basilica, and the Opera are all within walking distance. According to records, the first settlement along the Danube at Budapest was around the time of the birth of Christ. Later the Romans came and built roads, baths, and numerous other buildings. They were then defeated by the Bulgarians who built the fortress cities of Buda and Pest on each side of the river. The Hungarians finally captured the area around the 9th century. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until 1873 that Buda and Pest were joined to become the city of Budapest and the capital of Hungary. To really enjoy any visit to Budapest, walk down to the Danube on the Pest side and follow the promenade along the river to the

Chain Bridge, then take the walkway on the bridge across to the Buda side. Carefully navigate the roundabout and buy a ticket for the tram that is to the left of the tunnel. This unique vehicle travels to the top of Gellert Hill on a 48 percent grade for about the distance of a football field and affords you one of the most picturesque panoramas in the world! Wandering off the main roads into tiny side streets in the Castle District, allows you to absorb the wonderful feeling of going back to the middle ages. Sneak peeks into hidden courtyards, sights of beautifully restored houses, and colorful coat of arms are all along the way. But, never worry about getting lost because all major streets in the Castle District meet at Holy Trinity Square which is right in front of the Matthias Church. In ancient times, this square was the main marketplace and the site of many public executions. While strolling along the pale gray ramparts of Fisherman’s Bastion, you can observe the lower parts of Buda, the Danube River, and most of the flatter Pest side of the river. On a clear day, the view is spectacular! Numerous museums and galleries are located in the Castle District, and a sojourn inside the Matthais Church to see the 700year-old interior design is worthwhile. Organ concerts are common here due to the excellent

acoustics of the old church. That anything has survived at all after World War II is amazing considering the devastating air raids by allied bombers during 1944 and 1945, and the Russian bombardment and siege of the city in early 1945. Also, after Hungary became a communist people’s republic in 1949, the government viewed buildings in the Buda Castle District as symbols of the former regime, and destroyed most of them. Beginning with peaceful demonstrations, the Hungarian Revolution began in Budapest in 1956, but it was crushed by Russian tanks and soldiers in less than a month, killing more than 3,000. This tragic episode was followed by a long period of rebuilding that continued through the occupation, and is still occurring today, which has transformed Budapest into one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Prior to World War II, Budapest had one of the largest Jewish populations in Europe.

However, Nazis and others killed more than 100,000 Jews during the war. Nevertheless, Budapest today has the highest Jewish population per capita of any city in Europe. Despite all the wars and devastation throughout history, Budapest has to be considered one of the most photographic cities in Europe. Of course, the Pest side of the Danube River is fairly flat and houses most modern commercial growth, while Buda is part of the Danube Embankment that begins rising from the riverbank to nearly 500 feet. This side of the river contains most of the treasures of the past, including the royal history of the Hungarian people. The two cites joined become the phenomenal mixture of past and present known throughout the world as ... Budapest! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

Playing ‘Texas Chicken’ in the Port of Houston’s channel The Houston Ship Channel is a dredged ship navigation waterway that is 530 ft wide, 45 ft deep and approximately 50 miles long. From an observer’s vantage point on a ship it looks like a much more expansive body of water but the “Ditch” as it is referred to by large ship navigators and pilots, is something quite different. It is also the only way into and out of the Port of Houston for large size and hazardous types of commercial shipping. My first experience on a big ship entering this particular port was a vivid memory I will never forget. Better known as “Texas Chicken,” it is a required maneuver that two large ships passing

Lanier’s TowBoatUS wins coveted ‘Tower of the Year’ award for 2010 By Pamela A. Keene Robert Estrada and his Lake Lanier operation for TowBoatUS just keeps racking up the awards. And this year Estrada Estrada has topped every other TowBoatUS operation in the nation by being chosen the Tower of the Year – that’s tow-er, as in towing boats. Estrada and his crew have been singled out for the award because of their professionalism; the presentation was made at the BoatUS Towing Services Annual Conference held re-

cently in Long Beach, Calif. Lanier’s TowBoatUS is located at Lanier Harbor Marina and offers services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The operation has won Dispatcher of the Year with the organization for 11 of the past 12 years. “Capt. Estrada deserves to be recognized for his stellar service to boaters, as well as his top-flight internal operations,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services Jerry Cardarelli. “We are very proud of his operation and for the professionalism of his staff.”

The Lanier operation is part of a nationwide network of more than 290 ports that maintain a fleet of 600 TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist towboats. The Lanier unit was honored for its near-perfect towing dispatch operation, superior customer satisfaction, towing case management, and best safety record for a towing business. It was ranked one of the top five in BoatUS membership sales among the fleet. TowBoatUS Lake Lanier has towed and salvaged more than 10,000 boats since 1994.

Lake association takes leadership position in ACF stakeholders By Wilton Rooks, Vice President/Technology In August 2008 Lake Lanier Association officers Val Perry, executive vice president, and I, as the association’s vice president/technology, met with seven other interested parties in LaGrange, Ga. The meeting was to explore a radical concept. Could the diverse parties from Georgia, Florida and Alabama who have an interest in the waters of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Rivers watershed agree to an equitable sharing of the waters? It was radical because for 18 years the three states had been arguing through the courts. For the first time, the stakeholders in the ACF Basin were willing to sit together and discuss their use of the watershed. In reality the agenda for the meeting was to see if there was a reason to have a second meeting. The recreation, municipal water supply, navigation, environmental and nuclear power interests decided that there was room for optimism that something could be achieved by continuing the discussion. A year-long process produced a growing number of interested parties, a charter, by-laws, a mission statement, goals and a governance agreement. The first quarterly meeting of the 56-member Governing Board of the ACF Stakeholders took place in December 2009 in Albany. Subsequent meetings have occurred in Apalachicola, Fla., Lake Lanier Islands, Eufaula, Ala., and Lake Blackshear, Ga. It was decided that the Chair of the Executive Committee would rotate on an annual basis among four sub-basins. I was selected to serve as the first Chairman. Dan Tonsmeire of the Apalachicola Riverkeeper was

elected to succeed me as of December 10, 2010. Working together in committees, work groups and at Governing Board meetings, the diverse members representing virtually every aspect of water interests in the ACF Basin, the members have developed a growing trust and recognition of the needs of each other for equitable sharing of the water. Current projects include extensive hydrologic modeling based on stakeholder needs for flows and levels and ecological instream requirements, as well as developing a best practices understanding as to how the waters can be used more efficiently with an emphasis on the technology investments required to achieve better utilization. Whether now or in the future, the growing demands for water in the ACF Basin will outstrip the supply. These projects will provide the basis for making better policy and investment decisions regarding our most valuable resource – water. Founded in 1966, the Lake Lanier Association is the oldest volunteer group working to protect the high water quality as well as water levels and to preserve its valuable legacy for future generations. It is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization. MORE INFO:770-503-7757 www.lakelanier.org

OUTDOOR BRIEF More multisport events scheduled this season More than 16 triathlons and open water swims are scheduled from May 1 through Oct. 2 in the North Georgia area. New triathlons in the upcoming season include the May 1 Spring Fling at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue on Clarks Bridge Road, the Aug. 21 Tri to Beat Cancer at Sandy Creek Park in Athens, and the Sept. 11 5150 Triathlon at Lake Lanier Islands.

A new location is being studied for Just Tri It, a fundraiser for Hall County Habitat for Humanity formerly held at the Chattahoochee Country Club. Georgia Multisports Director Jim Rainey reported he has been consulted about relocating the August triathlon to Bolding Mill Park. - Jane Harrison

Telephone tag has gotten weird; leave a message Phillip is taking a break this month. Enjoy one of his “best of” columns from the past. Every day at work, I spend about half of my time on the telephone. I don’t really spend that much time actually talking to people. That would be too easy. Instead, I spend most of my time calling people who are always on another line talking to someone else. Of course, I don’t really believe that. More likely, their goofing off or in the break room or in the middle of a power nap. Either way, I always have to leave a message. Ordinarily, leaving a message is no big deal. Sooner or later, they’ll call back. And when they do, I’ll usually be trimming my nails or reading the sports page or, I will have, eh-hem, “just stepped out of my office.” Whatever, they usually just leave a message. Their message signifies that an official round of telephone tag is in progress. And that’s OK because we all know that sooner or later, one party will use all their cunning and cleverness to corner the other person into answering the phone and that’s when we
