INSIDE THIS ISSUE Bridge work progresses Construction crews drilling into bedrock under Lake Lanier to set a new Clarks Bridge caused hardly a ripple on the surface for boaters and road travelers as work progressed last month. Page 16
Submarine interrupts race Ian Jezak, 14, was concentrating hard to make the windward mark on the international race course off the coast of Argentina last month, when all of a sudden a strange dark object broke the surface of the water. Page 15
Winter in Banff After a day of “snow plowing” slowly down the “bunny slopes” at Banff and Lake Louise, (in Alberta, Canada), looking down the mountain at the beginning of a real ski run was terrifying! By the end of the day, I was lenjoying the experience and the gorgeous views of one of the most beautiful places on Earth. By Jane Harrison Georgia last month filed a lengthy opposition to a Florida lawsuit over water rights and sat waiting for Tennessee to respond to a lawsuit threat posed last year. Georgia sent the U.S. Supreme Court a 126-page opposition to the Florida suit, claiming the legal action attempts to thwart completion of a new water control manual for states tapping the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint rivers. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir in the ACF basin and major supplier of water for the north Georgia region. Justices were expected to consider the merits of the case in conference Feb. 28 and possibly issue an order March 3. The order could indicate whether justices will eventually hear oral arguments or deny further court action. The court reviews about 9,000 cases a year and grants hearings to about 80. In asking the court to deny Florida’s lawsuit, Georgia’s legal council claims Florida is attempting to disrupt the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ work on a water distribution plan. The Corps is re-writing its control manual
for water that passes through federal dams and reservoirs on the river system. Georgia’s motion to oppose the Florida suit accuses Florida of interference with “the orderly resolution of a long-running dispute” over water in the ACF basin. The suit filed in October alleges the Peach State is hoarding water from the Chattahoochee and Flint River systems and causing the decline of oysters in Apalachicola Bay. It aims to stop what Florida Gov. Rick Scott describes as “the unchecked consumption and storage by Georgia in the ACF Basin, and to equitably apportion those waters for the benefit of all users.” Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens would not comment on his expectations about the Supreme Court’s action on the Florida lawsuit nor would he respond to questions about whether the state will follow up on its threat to sue Tennessee by the end of the 2014 legislative session. Last year’s Georgia General Assembly passed a resolution to sue Tennessee if it did not grant Georgia access to the Tennessee River. House Resolution 4 seeks
to resolve a 200 year boundary dispute by requesting Tennessee to hand over a 1.5 mile strip of land to pipe water to Georgia. In exchange, the resolution states Georgia would drop its claim to about 66 square miles that it alleges were erroneously mapped as belonging to Tennessee. The resolution sites a survey miscalculation that placed the Georgia-Tennessee boundary
south of its intended line at the 35th parallel and resulted in Georgia’s lack of access to water from the Tennessee River. The resolution authorized Olens to file a Supreme Court lawsuit over the state line if Tennessee did not act by the time Georgia legislators closed the session this month. Now is the time to check your boat’s required equipment This past week we have enjoyed spring-like temperatures that make us the envy of many in the colder regions of our country. Weather that most of us prefer before taking our boats out of “moth balls” certainly is not far away. The next few weeks will be a perfect time to make a check of state required equipment to make sure you have everything you need before venturing out on the water. Some equipment has expiration dates, so that needs to be checked as well. Requirements vary according to the length of your vessel. In this article I will cover only the categories of equipment, since space will not allow a complete discussion of all the information related to each category. For a complete explanation of all the Georgia laws covering equipment, please refer to the “Handbook of Georgia Boating Laws and Responsibilities” which is published annually by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The booklets are available at boating supply stores, marinas and many marine dealers. The Coast Guard Auxiliary has a program to distribute these and

March 2014
Spring fishing is just around the corner on Lanier I leave my house early each day. Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed that dawn is quickening. I’m see daffodils blooming here and there. That can only mean one thing: Spring is closing in. Although we’re predicted to have another “polar vortex” next week, the weather is getting progressively milder. Before long, grass cutting will be a regular activity. On a more positive note, our lake temperatures are about to increase. When the temperature starts creeping into the 50s, make sure your tackle is ready because it’s time to go fishing. March is a month of great opportunity for several species. Spotted bass are feeding heavily and staging in the pre- spawn mode. Striper action can be a lot of fun. Look for linesides well up many creeks as they go through the annual false spawning ritual. March Crappie fishing is typically the best (or easiest which suits me well). This time of year, one of the hardest decisions can be which species to go after on any given outing. Fickle weather is a fact in early spring. A week of warm weather gets anglers fired up and can make for a great bite. Invariably, storm laden fronts pass through

beat the old reliable Shad Rap. The number seven size is tops in natural shad or silver/fluroescent chartreuse colors. This is not a suspending bait; be sure to keep the retrieve slow with very short pauses every so often. Another hot ticket can be the Fish Head Spin rigged with a Super Fluke Junior. This set up produces well in cooler water conditions and can be slowly retrieved from middle depths all the way to the bottom. While docks are obvious targets, bass will stage in many other areas. Primary and secondary points in creeks are always potential money areas. Any submerged cover such as stumps and rocks makes this type of structure better yet. Try a few casts with your favorite suspending jerkbait first. If this does not produce, crawl worms or jigs along the bottom. Spinnerbaits are also good lure choices this time of year. These can be fished at any level in the water column. Slow rolling a model with a single Colorado style blade just off the bottom is a great tactic in upper creeks when the water is significantly warming. You can tangle with some really nice largemouth bass doing this.
Mimic baitfish for striper bites March is a fine time to chase stripers. In fact, it’s a great time to catch a fish of 20 pounds or more. The fishing can be very good and it’s not difficult from the execution standpoint. While striped bass do not successfully spawn in Lake Lanier, they instinctively move up tributaries this time of year. Major creeks that have considerable length seem to draw the most fish. Lower lake areas worthy of consideration include: Two, Four, and Six Mile creeks along with Flowery Branch. Mid to upper lake areas to check include Flat, Balus, Sardis, and Wahoo creeks. The north end also has numerous long finger coves. Don’t overlook these. Drifting live bait and casting artificial lures can both be productive this time of year. Stripers will often prowl close to the shoreline. The white and silver flash bucktail jig is a fine producer. Keep the size at 3/8th or 1/4th ounce and dress it with a trailer to mimic a baitfish while slowing the fall. Fluke type plastic baits are also great when the fish are shallow. These can be fished with no weight or rigged See Fishing, page 11

Lanier Fishing Report
Continued from Page 10 on a lighter lead head. Your favorite swim bait is also a good candidate for action. These are likely to tempt many shallow water stripers this spring. While casting toward the shoreline, be sure to put some live bait out behind the boat. Flat lines baited with trout or herring will all get attention. Try at least one rod baited with a large baitfish. This can tempt that 20-plus pound striper. Be sure to tie a balloon inflated to golf ball size over your line and position it about 10 feet above the baitfish. Adjust shallower if necessary. This will prevent it from drifting too deep. If you only fish for stripers occasionally, do invest in two heavy duty rod holders for this. The Driftmaster brand is a hands down favorite with serious striper anglers. The Flatliner and Duo models are best for this application. Also, resist the temptation to set the drag at fighting level while waiting for the bite. A light setting will result in more hook ups and can be adjusted to a proper level when removed from the rod holder. There’s actually no need to set the hook. If you want to get live bait closer to the shoreline, use a planer board. These greatly increase the lateral drift. Remember that planer boards come in port and starboard models. Do the Tripple Ripple It’s no secret that crappie fishing is hot in the early spring. If you only pursue
these tasty panfish a few times each year, this is the time to do it. While good catches of crappie are made all over the lake, the upper end seems to hold a definite edge. Areas such as Taylor, Thompson, Toto, Yellow, Limestone, and Wahoo creeks are renowned crappie hot spots. Prior to spawning, crappie gravitate to many boat docks. Some docks can harbor huge schools and make for lots of fast action. The best docks will have 15 to 20 feet of water at the end along with some type of submerged cover. It’s not unusual for fishermen who own docks to sink brush and other objects to attract this species. If the weather has been mild, the period around the full moon in March can really make for some hot crappie fishing. This year, that falls on March 16th. I’m betting on cooler weather with serious action kicking near the end of March through the full moon on April 15th. During the latter part of this period, crappie will invade shallow areas with any type of brush and wood cover or vegetation. Remember that cold fronts will cause these fish to pull back to deeper water for a few days. Artificial lures and live bait both produce good catches. Smaller lead heads of 1/16th to 1/32nd ounce with two inch curl tail grubs or one and a half inch tube baits work very well. Combination rubber See Fishing, page 12
Lake level: Approximately 1071 which equates to full pool. Surface Temp: Middle 40s Clarity: The usual. Clear in main lake areas with some color in upper tributaries especially after rain events. Bass Fishing: At press time slow is the word. Not much has been happening out there with the colder water temperatures. Good news is the recent warming trend. Even with March cold snaps, expect fishing to steadily improve. When you go out on one of the nicer days while these cold water temperatures are in effect, expect to fish deep to put a few in the boat. You can also expect to catch some quality size spotted bass. Think about depths of 35 to 50 feet deep. Ditches and timberlines are two key areas to target. There has been no mention of catching fish on jigging spoons lately. This is often a winter staple on Lanier. You can probably leave everything at home but jigs and worms. Rig your favorite finesse style worm on a one quarter ounce specialty lead head. Color is probably immaterial when fishing 40 or 50 feet deep but dark colors (anything green or into the purple spectrum) get the go ahead. These will create a better silhouette down there. Superline products paired with a fluorocarbon leader can help in detecting subtle strikes. Silicone skirted jigs paired with crayfish or twin tail trailers and soft plastic spider jigs (Hula Grubs, Chompers, etc.) are also great options paired with 3/8th ounce football style heads. Be sure to maintain bottom contact and fish very very slow. On the upside, with warming water temperatures, get the suspending jerkbaits ready and try these off rocky points back in the creeks later in the month. Striper fishing has been only fair. Points in the major creeks have been producing a few fish. Look for the gulls to give away concentrations of baitfish. Forage is the key to locating linesides. Live baits drifted on flat lines are accounting for most of the action. Keep an eye on your sonar and don’t hesitate to drop baits on down rods to any pods of fish you may spot. Also be mindful that stripers will begin pushing up into the tributaries soon. By the middle of March, if not sooner, searches up the creeks should be a part of your game plan. Sometimes you can find fish within 100 yards of upper creek boat ramps. At this time, it’s more important than ever to be casting a smaller bucktail jig or fluke style soft plastic as you trail flat lines behind the boat. Expect striped bass fishing to improve as the month progresses ... barring yet another polar vortex of course!

Fire extinguishers Most vessels are required to have a Type B fire extinguisher(s) on board, in serviceable condition, and readily available, not in a box hidden away in some compartment. Everyone onboard should know where they are located and how to use them. Fire has a tendency to come at you quickly and without warning. The size and number of fire extinguishers required varies with the size of your vessel. I was discussing this subject with an “old salt” at a dock on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway several years ago and he made a very profound statement which I never forgot: “You can’t have too many or too large fire extinguishers onboard, but you surely can have too few and too small ones.” Make sure the needle on the little round dial on the fire extinguisher is pointed
in the “green” zone, indicating that it is ready for use. Ventilation systems The purpose of ventilation systems is to avoid explosions by removing flammable gases. All gasoline powered vessels must have at least two ventilation ducts fitted with cowls to remove fumes. If your vessel is equipped with a power ventilation system, turn it on for at least four minutes both after fueling and before starting your engine. I make it a practice to lift the engine hatch cover and stick my nose in the engine compartment and give it a good “sniff.” Backfire flame arrestors Because boat engines may backfire, all powerboats (except outboards) fueled with gasoline must have a USCG approved backfire flame arrestor on each carburetor of every engine. Periodically clean the flame arrestor(s) and check for any damage. If your vessel has been
in the shop for engine repair, check to ensure that the arrestor has been reseated. Mufflers Vessel operators may not hear sound signals or voices if the engine is not properly muffled. The exhaust on every internal combustion engine used on any vessel must be muffled or baffled and water injected (except those engines where the exhaust goes through the lower unit or outdrive) so as to decrease noise. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free Vessel Safety Checks where we check to ensure that your vessel has the proper required equipment and that it is in good working order, and we award you with a windshield decal for your vessel showing that you passed the check. There is no penalty for failing, and we will recheck your vessel after you’ve made correction. Roy Crittenden is the Public Affairs Officer for Flotilla 29.

Popular colors include blue and white, black and chartreuse, green and chartreuse, all chartreuse, all white, and pumpkinseed. Hues that people swear by are seemingly endless. Many of these can be fished plain or under a bobber. When you’re going crappie fishing, always take minnows along. They’re cheap and will often save the day if the fish are finicky. A few bobbers, split shot, and number four gold plated hooks will put you in business for minnows. Be sure to have a bait bucket at the ready. Lastly, don’t forget the minnow net. Super surprise pops up for local sailor in open water at International Regatta By Pamela A. Keene Ian Jezak, 14, was concentrating hard to make the windward mark on the international race course off the coast of Argentina last month, when all of a sudden a strange dark object broke the surJezak face of the water. At first, he and the other Optimist Pram racers didn’t know what to think, other than to continue the competition. But when the windward mark began to move and the field of competitors followed, he knew something wasn’t right. “It turned out to be a submarine from the Argentine Navy, but at first all we saw was a dark Lshaped object coming out of the water,” he said, recounting the experience after returning home. “It got hooked on the anchor line of the windward mark and started dragging it. Some of the coach boats had to help free it.” He said the racers never really found out why the boat was on their race course, more than 30 minutes off the coast.
Needless to say, that race was abandoned and the competitors returned to the starting line. “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that,” said Ian’s father John Jezak, who travels with his son to Opti sailboat races around the world from their home base of Lake Lanier Sailing Club. “It was amazing.” Ian, a student at Buckhead’s Sutton Middle School took up sailing Optis at LLSC several years ago and quickly advanced in the sport. He regularly trains in Florida and Long Island with one of the sport’s key coaches. In 2013, he traveled to Lake Garda in Italy for a competition that included 1,170 racers. The event ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest dinghy race in the world. Even with the large sea of competitors, Ian finished in the top fourth of the field. Ian took up sailing at age 7 through the Junior program at Lake Lanier Sailing Club, following in his older brother Brett’s footsteps. But he continued to compete after Brett moved on to other interests. Ian’s family, including mom Karen, twin sister

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Bridge work progresses near venue By Jane Harrison Construction crews drilling into bedrock under Lake Lanier to set a new Clarks Bridge caused hardly a ripple on the surface for boaters and road travelers as work progressed last month. As of late February, rowers, paddlers and motor boaters passing through the channel had adequate space to bypass a large drilling platform near the center. Motor vehicles crossed the old bridge unimpeded. Despite the drilling from a temporary platform and a barge traversing the channel with materials, the work had not generated safety concerns or maneuverability challenges for rowers or paddlers. The Clarks Bridge boat ramp remained open and motor boats passed through the construction site with no apparent difficulty. But large pipes, reams of metal brackets, and equipment stored in a parking area near the Lanier Olympic Venue grand stands will likely change parking plans for visitors expected in a double regatta weekend, March 29-30. Closure of part of the parking area for materials storage is expected to put more regatta participants and spectators on free shuttles to and from Gainesville Middle School. “We will alert our participants to the reduced parking on site due to the construction and encourage them take advantage of the remote parking and shuttle service,” said Paul Gaigelas, director of the March 29 John Hunter Regatta. The event, organized by the Saint Andrew Rowing Club of Roswell and Georgia Tech, is expected to draw more than 4,000 rowers and spectators to the Olympic Venue at

Large crowds expected for double regatta weekend By Jane Harrison More than 1,500 college, high school, and middle school rowers will converge on Lake Lanier for a double regatta weekend March 29-30. The John Hunter/Lanier Sprints regattas are expected to bring about 4,000 participants and spectators to the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. The 28th Annual “Hunter” regatta will kick off the season for many of the 50-plus teams anticipated to stroke the 2,000 meter Olympic course. Teams from Georgia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and Florida traditionally compete in the large regional regatta. A number of them stay for the next day’s Lanier Sprints, a smaller contest that features some races not on the Hunter agenda. “We expect the numbers to be similar to our 2013 numbers,” said Paul Gaigelas, Hunter director. The event is organized by the Saint Andrews Rowing Club, of Roswell, and Georgia Tech. The regatta was originally set on the Chattahoochee River in Roswell and moved to Lake Lanier in 2002. At least three local crews are expected to be on the water. Lake Lanier Rowing Club and Riverside Military Academy juniors, plus members of the University of North Georgia Rowing Club have been training over the winter for regatta season. “We’ve gotten a lot stronger over the winter, we just need to come together on the water,” said LLRC Junior Coach Brian Ransom. Frigid temperatures, ice and snow kept his crew mostly inside on ergometers until late February. “We’ve not had a lot of time on the water,” Ransom said on a mild after-

noon last month as the teenagers launched from the boathouse. Rowers on the 19-member crew hail from five local high schools: North Hall, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Mill Creek and North Gwinnett. “We’ve gotten bigger and better,” Ransom said. He plans to enter quad-, 4- and 8-boats in the Hunter and possibly add some single and double entries in Lanier Sprints. For the first time the Hunter will be showcasing middle school teams in a no-medal exhibition race. “We expect to see various crew combinations (all boys vs. all girls vs. a mix of boys and girls) competing in the same race,” Gaigelas said. “We are seeing more junior clubs recruiting middle schoolers and offering a reduced training schedule for them,” he said. “The addition of the event is in response to requests from multiple coaches.” Ransom reported the LLRC junior squad includes two eighth graders who will race with high school teammates, but are not entered in the exhibition race. Some crews are expected to stay over for another day of racing in the Lanier Sprints. The LLRC-organized regatta includes open, sculling and masters races, plus possibly some repeat events from the Hunter. The popular regatta weekend boosts bookings at local hotels, slows traffic on Clarks Bridge Road, and closes the Clarks Bridge Park boat ramp. Participants and spectators are encouraged to park off site at Gainesville Middle School and ride free shuttles. Parking space at LLOV is reduced due to construction on Clarks Bridge.

The bridge project includes a pedestrian tunnel between the Olympic Venue boathouse/parking area on the west side of Clarks Bridge and the grandstands on the other side. It is expected to ultimately improve pedestrian safety and cut down on traffic interruption on the twolane road during major events at the Olympic Venue. Bridge work is scheduled to halt prior to and during the John Hunter Regatta and the next day’s Lanier Sprints Regatta, a smaller locally-organized event. “In our contract, we require water work and roadwork that impacts lanes to stop a minimum of 12 hours before a boating event at the venue,” said Teri Pope, spokesperson for Georgia Department of Transportation Department Northeast District. Regatta crews will be traveling through the construction site from launch docks at the boat house to the Olympic course in front of the grandstands. “There is a minimum requirement for ‘lanes’ in the lake for use at all times. Primarily the
contractor is working through the associations to share information with coaches and boaters,” Pope said The contract requires the construction crew to maintain two way boat traffic through the project area at all times with a minimum of 30 feet per lane. The contractor is not allowed to block the boat ramp area parking or launch area except for the areas that are being changed or rebuilt during construction. Late last month, a drilling crew bored down more than 70 feet to create the first of 12 holes for six foundation piers. Snow and ice in mid-February “did not impact the project,” Pope said. The crew was able to work three and a half days despite the weather. “Over the three year time of the project, weather one or two weeks doesn’t impact the timeline. We build in rain days and the winter is the slow season for construction work to occur.” Lake activity near the construction site is anticipated to heat up this month with as many as 400 collegiate and youth rowers per week plying the waters in spring break practice. “So far
there are no problems,” Lake Lanier Rowing Club President John Ferriss reported in February. The spring training frenzy culminates with the regattas that traditionally attract more than a thousand rowers. Ellie Cayer, a coxswain for the Arlington Belmont Crew from Massachusetts, directed her women’s 8-boat teammates through the passage with ease during a late February training session. She reported “no problem” guiding the 60-plus foot shell through the site. New boats at the shows were impressive Most of the major boat shows are over, and I hope we’ve seen the last of old man winter. Often I’m asked about what kind of boat to purchase. My answer is always, “What type of boating do you and your family want to do?” It’s easy to get enticed on various boats at the boat show or in the showroom, but will that boat satisfy your family. If you don’t make the right choice the boat will end up not being used and you will have an expensive investment not in use and losing value. Several boats impressed me recently and here’s a list ... I’m sure one would fit your needs. Boston Whalers have always been wellbuilt boats and have a good selection from the 13’ boat tender to their larger off shore fishing vessels. Many boaters’ first boating experience was with a 13’ Boston Whaler powered by a small outboard. Whalers also have a reputation of good resale value, which is another factor to think about when buying a boat. If your boating fund is small and you are starting out you might want to check out Bass Pro Shops’ “Bass Trackers” and family runabouts. Their hull design offers excellent performance with less horsepower than most boats. This means your fuel bill will be less, check them out. Aluminum boat builder Lowe offers a 22’ outboard powered runabout that has a wakeboard tower. For those into watersports you need to check this one out. Hurricane deck boats have been around quite a while and have a good reputation for quality. The new Sundeck 2690 has a new bottom designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, which gives a better ride and also has a 15” draft which allows you to explore. It also performs well enough to pull skiers or water toys. Premier Pontoon boats introduced the Intrigue 250 PTX which offers a great seating arrangement and a power Bimini top with moon roof. A unique feature is that while you are on the water you can access the owner’s manual through the in dash beacon helm system if you have any questions. In the 25’ and up bow riders with all the bells and whistles check out Georgia-built Chapperal, Regal, Cobalt, Sea-Ray, and Cruisers Yachts’ Black Diamond 328SS which Boating Magazine has named “Boat of the Year.”
Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments
In larger boats with sleeping accommodations the Sea-Ray 370 Venture deserves consideration. The 2013 Boating Magazine’s “Boat of the Year” is unique in design as it is powered by two 300 h.p. Mercury Verado’s which are installed in a well that is covered beneath the aft sun pad. They are still conveniently accessible for service. Boat testers say it’s the quietest boat they have tested to date. This design allows more cabin space which other boats of the same size can’t offer. In the big cruisers, Sea-Ray introduced a 71’ footer at the Miami Boat Show, and Bertram displayed a 60’ convertible fly bridge with tower. Having sold the Queen of the Miami show in 1970, a 46’ convertible fly bridge, I would love to sea trial the new 60’. I can’t wait to see the boat test on her. Whether you buy a new or used boat, always have a marine survey and sea trial with your complete crew. You’d be surprised what a marine surveyor can find on a new boat. Also get a free U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary inspection before the season starts. There are a lot of great new boats this year and one of which would fill the needs of your boating family. We wish you a happy and safe boating this season. Canal cruises I’ve met a lot of folks who won’t take an offshore trip or even a cruise ship trip because they say they will be seasick, especially if they are out of the sight of land. However they are fine cruising on a lake or bay. Here’s a chance to cruise the world and never be out of the sight of land. Le Boat offers canal cruises in nine different countries. You are the captain and whether you want to cruise France, Italy, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium, Holland, or Poland the next turn in the canal is a new adventure. You and your family will experience history and different cultures. This would be the trip of a lifetime for a family. Contact Le Boat at: www.leboat.com/boatus or call 866-649-2116. If you go, share your photos and story with Lakeside.
College fishing We’ve occasionally reported on college fishing. It has become very popular. In our area Auburn University is leading the pack, but fishing fever is spreading. Oklahoma University has an accomplished team, as well as Virginia Tech and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. So as you can see fishing fever at the college level is showing enthusiasm throughout the U.S. Even the Bass Pro Series is hosting tournaments. You would think that with Lake Lanier and other lakes in North Georgia we would have a few teams to brag about. Check Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series at: www.boatus.com/angler. Let’s get some teams going. The JetLev Not long ago we reported about the jet pack which allowed you to fly over the water; now comes the Jetlev which is called the Atlantic Fly Board. The propulsion come from a PWC and shoots its water up a 60’ hose and out of a snowboard like platform. Steering the board is by leg and hip movement, while the throttle is controlled via a remote or by the PWC below. Videos show doing flips in the air, and diving underwater. Training is recommended. Price is $5,850. Check videos at www.yachtingmagazine.com/jan2014 and for more information check www.atlanticflyboard.com. Musical LEDs One of the displays at the recent marine equipment trade show in the Netherlands was underwater LED lights that blink to the beat of your favorite song and can be controlled by your smart phone. For more information on LED technology. Go to: www.yachtingmagazine.com. New stand up paddleboard We’ve all heard of Bic pens and most likely have a few of them. Well Bic is now into the blow-up paddle board business. They have a line of inflatable SUP’s from 10’ to 12’6” that when deflated fit into a large back pack. It also makes them easier to stow on your boat. Its surprising rigidity rivals traditional fiberglass-epoxy boards. Prices range from $899 to $1,300. For more information: www.bilsup.com. Check your boat Those of you who have stored your boat outside on the trailer or in the water with a boat cover or tarp might want to start cleaning them up for the season. Many will find that critters have moved in and made a mess. The sooner you

Residents need to heed warnings February 2014 may go down as one of the most bizarre weather months I have ever seen. After “Snowpocolypse” in late January, an even stronger winter storm developed in the Gulf of Mexico and ran right into a wedge of cold arctic air. It was amazing to see the different types of precipitation we endured over that 36-hour period. We were a lot more prepared for the second one. Our 1-2 inch snowfall on January 28th turned into the worse traffic nightmare since “Snowjam” 1982. People were stuck on the roads and in schools for up to 24 hours. Most everybody blamed the government for its lack of preparedness. I beg to differ. We all knew we were going to see 1-2 inches of snow followed by an arctic cold front. We knew it was going to develop in the late morning and continue into the evening. However, people chose to go to work. Schools chose to have class. Then it began to snow and everyone left work and school at the same time. All the traffic on the roads caused a massive snow melt which abruptly turned into ice with the cold arctic air moving in. Trucks to treat the roads could not get to their destinations and then the public said the government should have been more prepared. It was actually the residents of north Georgia that were not prepared and did not take our forecasts seriously and caused the chaos. When we were forecasting the snow,
sleet, and ice again two weeks later, people heeded the warnings and Glenn we avoided a repeat perBurns formance. Gov. Nathan Deal in the days after Lanier the January 28th storm, Outlook appointed a task force, of which I am a member. We have met several times and have made some excellent suggestions on how to address future winter storms. I am also doing a lot of the forecasting too. Although winter is just about over, I have reminded the task force about March 13, 1993! While seeing another “Storm of the Century” is not likely, you never know, especially with this weather pattern we are in. Speaking of weather patterns, it is likely we are going to see the strong southern branch of the jet stream continue to traverse the southern United States through the spring. It wasn’t a week after our snow, sleet, and ice that we were under a tornado watch with violent overnight storms causing trees to crash into homes. I suspect we are going to have a very active tornado and severe storm season if the pattern holds. I cannot emphasize enough that we all need to be prepared. You need an app that has a warning alert for your smart phone. We have a great weather app that I think is the best in the country. It is free on iTunes. If you don’t have a tablet or smart phone, you need to get a weather alert radio. Whenever there is a severe storm threat, you will have critical weather information

when you need it, even if the power goes out. Take for example our first round of severe storms back in February. They moved in during the middle of the night
when most of us were asleep. Getting a warning from your smart phone, tablet, or weather alert radio can and does save lives. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

Things are changing where time once stood still Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. It was a peaceful night in Man O War back in 2002 when I penned an article for Lakeside entitled “A Special Night with Pirates” describing the relaxed lifestyle on the small island. In fact, Carolyn and I stayed aboard our sailboat on a mooring in the harbor for two months, and during that time we came to realize that the ever present hustle and bustles of modern day living elsewhere had somehow bypassed Man O War. There were 200 or so residents then. The men were engaged in boatbuilding, boat repair or fishing, while the women baked, crafted canvas bags or managed a limited number of shops. Back then the Abaco Ferry Service operated a fleet of ferries to the mainland or neighboring cays,
early in the morning heading to the ferry or delivering the children to school. When the delivery Bob & barge arrived at the government Carolyn dock, the shopkeepers would line Wilson the dock to gather arriving goods or ship things back to the mainCruising land. and a 4G Network now available, things are changing. It is not unusual to see a 4-year-old huddled in a corner with an iPhone or electronic tablet, or others so consumed that they tune out everyone and everything around them. Fiberglass has replaced the handcrafted wooden hulls of yesterday, and with the ease of reaching the mainland for groceries and supplies, life here is a far cry from the days when the Loyalists landed here in hopes of escaping the tyranny of an America in revolt. One wonders if technology has had a positive influence. As I grow older, I have seen
similar changes in so many places. Our grandchildren are similarly immersed in the computer revolution, so much so that I find myself asking a 3-year-old how to post a picture on Facebook or add an app to my iPhone. I recall my parent’s distrust of the Beatles invasion and the beads and bell bottom pants that were so popular among my generation. From all indications I feel that I have had a pretty good life, so hopefully all the changes that have taken place since our last visit to Man O War will not be so bad after all. - Until next time, Bob & Carolyn Wilson

Poster contest’s 24th year offers kids opportunity to ‘Plug Into Nature’ Teachers and students across Georgia are invited to celebrate Georgia’s wildlife and students’ artistic interests by participating in the Give Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest. Whether exploring their schoolyard and backyard environments or taking a field trip to a nearby park, nature center or botanical garden, students are encouraged to share their plant and animal encounters through art in the 24th annual conservation poster contest. This year’s competition theme, “Plug Into Nature,” emphasizes the importance of connecting to wildlife and plants through firsthand experiences. Research shows that teachers who submerge their classes in nature increase their students’ ability to focus and make observations, to cooperate with others, and to achieve higher test scores. Even unstructured outdoor play yields a host of benefits. While technology is very useful at times, smart phones, electronic tablets and digital cameras best serve as supplements to natural encounters rather than replacements. While game species are important to the wildlife diversity of Georgia, the poster contest focuses on nongame animals and native plant species. Nongame species (those not legally hunted or fished for) vary from rare animals and plants such as the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and the hooded pitcherplant to common species such as the northern cardinal and flowering dogwood. Entries in the state-level contest must be received by April 16. The contest is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Nongame Conservation Sec-
tion, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and The Environmental Resources Network, or TERN, friends group of the Nongame Conservation Section. The contest is open to kindergarten through 5th-grade students in public schools, private schools and homeschool groups. Participants enter at the local school level with drawings that depict their observations of Georgia’s native nongame animals and plants. Top schoollevel entries proceed to the state contest at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens. First-, second- and third-place winners are chosen there for four divisions: kindergarten, first and second grade, third and fourth grade, and fifth grade. The top 12 winners’ artwork will be showcased on the DNR Wildlife Resources Division Flickr site (www.flickr.com/ photos/wildliferesourcesdivision) and displayed at the Go Fish Education Center in Perry from May 1-May 16. The goal of the Give Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest is to generate a greater knowledge and appreciation of Georgia’s diverse and increasingly threatened nongame wildlife and their habitats. Only a deep concern and commitment to these wild places will ensure their existence for future generations. Visit www.georgiawildlife. com/postercontest or http://botgarden.uga.edu for contest rules, entry forms and further information about the 24th annual Give Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest. DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and TERN have sponsored more than two decades of nongame wildlife exploration, education and art with the annual contest.

More than $100,000 raised for Special Olympics Georgia during Polar Plunge Nearly 200 supporters took the plunge at Lake Lanier Island’s Sunset Cove last month during the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Georgia. The participants, along with hundreds of supporters during at the event, raised just over $106,000 for the charity. It was a record setting figure
for the five-year event. Funds will support the organization’s 25,878 Special Olympics athletes. The day of activities consisted of a face painter, corn-hole, music and a basketball pop-a-shot game.
Awards were also given out to sponsors, best team and individual costume and highest team and individual fundraisers for law enforcement officers and non-law enforcement officers.

Georgia wildlife images from DNR now on Instagram Georgia’s outdoor enthusiasts can get another glimpse into the outdoors through the eyes of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources staff by following the department’s new Instagram profile at www.instagram.com/georgiawildlife. Instagram is a social network that allows users to share photos
and short videos online while also applying digital filters to them. You can even share your own photos of Georgia wildlife by tagging @GeorgiaWildlife. “We’re constantly looking for additional ways to engage with hunters, anglers and all who enjoy the outdoors in Georgia through social media” said communications/outreach specialist David Allen. “While we’re already con-
necting with our fans through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even Foursquare, we’ve found our followers thoroughly enjoy photos from our staff and what they encounter on the job. With our new Instagram profile, we’re giving Georgia outdoorsmen and women more of what they want to see.” Visit the Apple App Store or Android Market to download Instagram, and start viewing and sharing photos with @GeorgiaWildlife.

New marina proposed for north end of lake By Jane Harrison The first new marina on Lake Lanier in decades could be open by spring 2015 if a plan by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is fulfilled. The Corps Mobile District office planned late last month to post formal requests for proposals to develop a marina at Bolding Mill Park on the Chestatee River section of the lake. The potential project is expected to draw the attention of marina contractors and real estate developers to the northern arm of the lake with few public boating facilities. A marina might bring a restaurant, additional boat ramps, and hundreds of boat slips to Lanier’s northern reaches, depending on proposals submitted and approved, said Lisa Parker, spokesperson for the Corps Mobile District Water Management office. It could also help attract more visitors to Bolding Mill Park, which is on the Corps list of parks that needs increased visitation, decreased spending, or both to remain feasible to operate, said Tim Rainey, Corps Operations Project Manager for Lake Lanier. The park at 4055 Chestatee Road has more than 90 campsites, hot showers, laundry facility, swimming area, play-
ground and a boat ramp. Corps officials believe it could tie in nicely with a marina plan. The formal request for proposals was expected to appear on the Corps’ website and internet and media outlets in late February. Rainey expected the Corps to accept proposals for about 45 days, after which it could take another month to evaluate submissions. The selected plan would require an environmental assessment that could take six to nine months, Parker said. A subsequent lease would be offered for 25 years with an option to renew. Rainey said the goal is to sign the lease and possibly have a marina at least partially open at the start of the 2015 recreation season. Rainey said a previous attempt to open fuel services on private property on the Chestatee “did not go anywhere.” The current proposal is part of a Corps recreational plan developed about three years ago. It incorporates the public’s requests for boater services on the lake’s northern shores. Rainey said the Corps had also looked at possibly locating a marina at Toto Creek or War Hill parks, but chose Bolding Mill instead.

Fest celebrates Appalachian Trail community By Jane Harrison Dahlonega’s connections to the Appalachian Trail extend beyond mere location to a cultural link with those who hike. The 2,100 mile foot path from Georgia to Maine traverses the city’s nearby mountainscape and brings those lured by the richness of woodswalking to the town where miners once sought gold. It’s often the final civilized outpost northbound thru-hikers see before their journey and the one southbounders yearn for after kissing the trail terminus on Springer Mountain. The city known for the nation’s first Gold Rush in 1828 salutes a different kind of
prospector March 14-16 with the Spring on Springer AT Trail Fest. The hikers’ extravaganza is set just prior to the first day of spring when thousands of hopeful thruhikers will be stuffing backpacks for the long haul. Bluegrass music, guest speakers, films, equipment vendors, crafts, food and more are planned to celebrate Dahlonega’s connection to the famous trail. Hikers can get inspired by Gene Espy, the second person to walk the entire route. The wellknown story teller is expected to share his pioneering tales of solitude, wilderness, and difficulties from the early days of long dis-

spectives on hiking the AT and North Carolina trails. Outdoor workshops, activities, shuttles, camping, and trail runs are also planned. The annual festival celebrates Dahlonega’s designation as an AT Community by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The Trail Community program recognizes towns, counties and com-
munities along the corridor that act as good neighbors and friends to the AT. It assists communities with sustainable economic development through tourism and outdoor recreation that preserves and See Trail, page 41 MORE INFO: www.dahlonegatrailfest.org

Barkley Geib: Lake Lanier continues to change his life Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene Barkley Geib bought a marina in the 1990s and it changed his life. By purchasing Lanier Harbor Marina in 1993, Geib moved from a life in the world of real estate and restaurant management to one spent on the water. Now he’s readying for the next chapter in his life. The year was 2008. Geib had spent the previous two years developing his vision of a multi-use development at Lanier Harbor – high-end-condos, restaurants, fitness facilities and shops – to be called Waterfront on Lanier. Condo sales had begun and there were serious talks with various retail interests about moving into the community. Then circumstances came together in the worst way. “It was the perfect storm of being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said. “Back in 2008 with the looming bank crisis and changes in the FDIC reserve laws, we had to shut down our Waterfront development. The lake was down 21 feet, and no marine lenders would do a loan on a dry lake. We’ve been losing money

every single day since then for the past six years. For the past three years I’ve been working every single day, seven days a week. It was time, and I just couldn’t continue to support the marina.” In early February, after 21 years, Geib decided to close the marina. For him, it was a difficult decision, not only from a business standpoint, but from a personal one as well. “You know, this marina has been my life for the past 21 years,” he said recently. “My daughters have grown up here and it’s been like a member of our family all these years.” He met his wife Dee through Lanier Harbor and created the world’s largest Poker Run based at Lanier Harbor in the 1990s through the early 2000s. He’s toured with the Offshore Power Boat Association and supported a number of charities through the McKinney Geib Foundation, which he manages. Over the past decade, the organization has donated more than $2 million to support children’s charities including The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County, Kids in Distress and the Boy Scouts of

America. The foundation has also supported lake causes, including the Lake Lanier Association. “Life’s all about giving back and children are a primary place for giving,” said Geib during a recent interview at Lanier Harbor Marina’s Ship’s Store. “There are so many worthwhile charities, but our foundation’s support for children is primary.” Geib admittedly loves Lake Lanier, not just because it’s his business. He served for a number of years on the Lake Lanier Association board of directors, during a time when the association tackled legal challenges involving lake levels and water quality. The foundation also supported the association. “Barkley has always been a strong supporter of the Lake Lanier Association,” said Val Perry, executive vice president of the LLA. “He’s a good friend of mine, and a great advocate for Lake Lanier.” Vicki Barnhorst served as executive director for the association for a number of years. She now lives in California but has fond memories of her time at Lanier. “We always counted on Barkley. He was on our board when I joined LLA,” she said. “He was invaluable to the Lake Lanier Association and Shoresweep and was always willing to go above and beyond. He has the lake’s best interests at heart.” He’s supported several entrepreneurs around the lake, including his best friend Robert Estrada’s TowBoatUS franchise, which for nine of the past 10 years has received the organization’s highest award – The Dispatcher of the Year. The two founded the Lanier TowBoatUS business in 1993; Estrada bought Geib out several years later. It became the first fresh-water marina co-op for BoatUS in the nation. “I especially appreciate my two loyal security guards – Scott Novinski who has been with me all 21 years,” Geib said. “In fact, he’s the first person I ever hired for the marina. He’s never called in sick a single day in 21 years. And our weeknights security guard James Wilson, and his “deputy dog” Max. He’s worked for marinas on the lake for decades.” A family man Barkley met his wife Dee when she worked for the restaurant at Lanier Harbor in the mid-

1990s. “She was the prettiest waitress on staff when I met her,” he said with a big grin. Dee later took on the bookkeeping duties at the marina and restaurant, working closely with Barkley and learning the business. His love of water played a big role in their engagement. “Barkley proposed by setting up a fake rescue tow,” said Dee, who could double as a fashion model. “He asked me to go with him to do a tow from the dam and when we got to the site, there was no boat to tow. He proposed and of course I said yes.” They married in early 1999. Geib said his whole staff knew of his plans before he left the marina that day. They were all waiting to congratulate the couple upon their return. Today, Dee and Barkley have two blonde daughters – Linda Gray, 12, and Audrey McKinney, 10. The girls attend Lakeview Academy where Dee frequently volunteers. Both girls are good students and have their share of hobbies, including horseback riding – they have a pony – and playing soccer. Linda is also active in basketball. They’re outgoing and friendly, just like their parents. The family also enjoys snow skiing each winter out West. Dee makes stained glass that she shares with friends and also plays tennis. She’s an avid gardener. Family has always been im-
portant to Geib. His parents both died when he was a youngster, and he was raised by his step-parents in Stanford, Conn., spending summers in Madison Conn., on Long Island Sound. There he first got into boating with a Sunfish and a 13-foot Boston Whaler. Geib’s uncle, Walker McKinney, and Geib went into the real estate business after Geib graduated from Jacksonville University in Florida with a degree in business and marketing. They purchased a commercial building in the late 1970s that Geib managed for several years. Then Geib moved into the restaurant and club business, serving as General Manager of Timothy Johns Restaurant in Sandy Springs for 10 years. He also worked in real estate appraising for a time. Back to boating By early 1992, he was ready for boating again, purchasing a 24-foot Chris Craft. Just six months later, he bought a marina – Lanier Harbor. “I knew I wanted to get into the marine business one way or another,” he said. “When Lanier Harbor came up for sale, it was the perfect match for us.” Geib built the marina, ship’s store and restaurant into a popular destination on Lanier. From the beginning, he offered 24-hour gas service, no matter what time of year or weather. In fact, Lanier See Geib, page 45

The restaurant’s sandwiches and salads include the return of the French Dip, Sunset Lakeside Tacos featuring a choice of shrimp, mahi mahi, steak or chicken, plus a chicken salad platter garnished with cranberries and pecans. The Cove’s Bloody Beer, a combination of Dos Equis draft and Bloody Mary mix, and the Woodford Blackberry are sure to be popular beverages. Continued from page 42 Harbor Marina offered the only 24-hour, 365-day gas dock. By early 1994, Geib’s dream of creating a Poker Run on Lake Lanier became a reality. The event eventually drew 300 boats and became the World’s Largest Poker Run at the time. During the final few years of the event – in the early 2000s – he even promoted the Poker Run to the Offshore Power Boating Association, where Geib toured and sponsored the official pace boat of the association. “We helped promote OPBA racing on Lanier and at one time had five or six teams here,” he said. In fact, he was on his way to a race in Key West when daughter, Linda Gray, arrived five weeks early. Audrey was born two years later, “and my racing days were over,” he said with a smile. At the 2007 January Atlanta Boat Show, Geib announced an ambitious mixed-use community called Waterfront that was to have featured town homes, lakefront dining, a fitness club and upscale docks. Just as sales were beginning for pre-construction, the bottom fell out of the real estate and banking market and plans were put on hold. In the meantime, Geib finished construction on the deep-water state-of-theart docks that are fully leased. He also
built a floating Ship’s Store and gas dock. Through the years he’s been involved with the Marine Trade Association of Metropolitan Atlanta, formerly as president and currently as treasurer. Geib also serves on the board of directors of Lanier Partners of North Georgia, a non-profit organization that hosts Lake Lanier’s major fund-raising poker run each summer. “Barkley’s the grandfather of poker runs,” said Rea Williams with Lanier Partners. “He’s probably forgotten more about poker runs than many of us know. His administrative and organizational skills have been incredibly helpful to us as we’ve grown our event.” “On top of everything else, Barkley is really kind-hearted in everything he does,” Williams said. “And most of all, he’s just really humble about it.” Geib and his family are still mulling over the next step in their lives. Of course, he will continue to manage the McKinney Geib Foundation, do philanthropic work and spend time on the lake with family and friends. Geib continues to be optimistic, a trait he’s known for around the lake. “You know what they say? When God closes a door, he opens another one,” he said. “I’m ready for the next adventure.”

Winter in Banff is simply magnificent After a day of “snow plowing” slowly down the “bunny slopes” at Banff and Lake Louise, (in Alberta, Canada), looking down the mountain at the beginning of a real ski run was terrifying! Less than 24 hours earlier was the first time I had ever donned a pair of snow skis, so I naturally questioned the sanity of this decision by my instructor to attack this famous Banff mountain on a pair of skinny boards. Though the actual ski run for beginners is only slightly steeper in places than the wider training or “bunny” slopes, one can easily see that the sides of the run go straight down. Therefore, as my ski instructor had warned, I was engulfed by what they call “mountain fear.” I quickly learned, however, that I could still make the turns or stop in the same way the wonderful instructors from the Banff and Lake Louise had taught me, and my confidence continued to grow. By the end of the day, I was like everyone else … enjoying the experience and the gorgeous views of one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Having never seen the Canadian Rockies during the winter season, I was amazed by the majesty of the snow-covered mountains. Also, the elegance and history of the Banff Springs Hotel was like something out of a medieval fairy tale. This spectacular hotel was the world’s largest when it opened in 1888 to accom-

It was designed and furnished to resemble a Scottish castle at the urging of William Van Horne, General Manager of Canadian Pacific Railways. The hotel, which is known as “Canada’s Castle in the Rockies,” remains as Banff’s signature property and is one of the most beautiful hotels in Canada. This picturesque property is also the hub for those who want to ski Banff’s three famous ski venues at Lake Louise, Sunshine and Norquay. A complete ski shop with the latest rental ski equipment is located inside the Banff Springs Hotel, and they can arrange daily passes and ski lift tickets for all venues with reliable transportation to and from each area. Banff National Park attracts roughly four million visitors each year and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park is renowned as a protected paradise that encompasses 6,641 square kilometers of mountains, forests and lakes in the middle of a vast wilderness. The small communities of Banff and Lake Louise are the only townships inside the National Park. These villages have a distinctive mountain lifestyle, a deep respect for the natural surroundings and a local history that is as diverse as the people who inhabit this area. All residents must reside in one of the two villages to own a home, which helps to preserve the family qualities of the two communities. The town of Banff is in the province of Alberta in the southwestern corner of Banff National Park and 90 miles west of Calgary via the Trans Canada Highway. Because the town is surrounded by mountains and wilderness, the community must share its space with a variety of wildlife. Walking about the town, one is likely to see deer or elk at any time during the winter and spring months. Banff is also
known for its shopping and excellent restaurants. One of the best is the Waldhaus Restaurant, which is a Bavarian Cottage-style building that was built in 1927 and overlooks the Spray River. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an old hunting cottage with dark, rich wood paneling, and a large fireplace. The menu consists of authentic German and Swiss dishes. The very quiet hamlet of Lake Louise is 50 minutes farther west and is also within Banff National Park. Spectacular scenery is the norm at Lake Louise, and it boasts 4,200 skiable acres, which makes it one of the largest ski areas in North America. The unique layout allows families and groups of varying abilities to ski together. Visitors will find beginner, intermediate and expert downhill runs from every chair lift. Beginners and intermediate skiers have access to an abundance of gentle slopes and long cruising runs, and experts can explore endless chutes, glades, gullies and remote bowls in some of the Rockies’ most challenging ter-
rain. Banff National Park was the first such park in Canada and only the third in the world when it was created in 1885. It was named for Banffshire, Scotland, and because of the natural hot springs, it brought in tourists from all around the world. Though much has changed in the world since the beginning of the 20th century, little has changed in Banff because of the strict laws inherent with being in a national park. Therefore, developers with deep pockets have been kept out of this pristine part of Canada, and the animals have more rights than the people. As it has always been, Banff National Park is still a quiet, but absolutely awe inspiring natural wonder of the world … especially when covered with pure, soft, powdered snow! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

The club, which is headquartered at Aquamarina Lazy Days off Lanier Islands Parkway, is hosting its grand opening on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The club is also hosting open house events every Saturday and Sunday for potential members to check out the club and its fleet. “It’s a great way to use a brand new boat on Lake Lanier and just enjoy the weather,” said Julie Horne, general manager of the Carefree Boat Club. “We’re bringing high-end pontoons, wakeboard boats and cruisers to the club for our members and all they have to do is call
ahead and their boat will be waiting for them at the marina’s courtesy dock, gassed up and ready to go.” The Carefree Boat Club has affiliates on fresh and salt water, with the main concentration of clubs along the Eastern Seaboard and west to Chicago. Members pay monthly dues – much like a golf membership – and then can reserve boats for up to six hours at a time. Reservations are taken online and by telephone. “When you join, not only do you have access to the boats at your home club, you can also use boats at any of our other locations,” Horne said. “It’s a really convenient way to go boating without the expense of an up-
front purchase, insurance, maintenance and slip fees.” Horne says the Lanier location offers Manitou Tritoon Pontoon boats and a variety of Chaparral boats, from wakeboarding to cruisers. They’re all stored at Lazy Days Marina in the dry stack facility and are brought to the courtesy dock when members call. “Their boat will be there waiting for the member and we’ll do a quick walk-around, like when you’re renting a car, then just turn the key and go,” she said. “We’re flexible about rental times and our goal is to far exceed our members’ expectations. Plus, our member-to-boat ratio is really good.”

Know where you are at all times when out boating A part of the definition for responsible navigation is: the person in charge of a underway vessel should be able to quickly and with reasonable accuracy give their approximate location at all times without regard to navigation systems and other piloting methods. In order to know your geographic location and becoming proficient in the science of navigation you need to first estimate your position … a process called dead reckoning. We all do it each and every time we drive our vehicles. Familiar landmarks, intersections, and driving experience serve as our guide. The same holds true for boating. Some of you develop and master electronic navigation skills to deliver the desired information. Keeping the unexpected in mind, what do you do when the power goes out or the system fails? If the answer is “I don’t know” then you are just one moment away from an unwanted marine situation. These problems
vices are lacking one important aspect, they are NOT updated. The ability to do that task delivers many benefits to you, especially the aptitude to look ahead and predict what will happen as the result of your actions. This can only be achieved with utilizing multiple information sources and measuring the results. This com-

Think of this question often when on the water, “Where are you?” It will make a positive difference in your boating experience and to others that enjoy the lake. Cookies everywhere yet not a crumb for me Lewis Grizzard said it first and best many years ago when he informed the “We don’t do it this way back home”crowd, that “Delta is ready when you are.” I am afraid that, unfortunately, things have changed since then. Based on my most recent interaction with Delta, they are a long way from being ready. Like all the rest of you lemmings, my family and I have been tethered to Delta for a very long time. As a result, we have endured many trials and tribulations with a certain amount of equanimity in the misbegotten belief that same would eventually be rewarded by Delta. Not sure what kind of reward I had in mind exactly, but I was thinking just a little bit more than a Biscoff cookie and a cup of water. I mean, incarcerated homicidal maniacs do better than that, and they rarely, if ever, serve hard time in Coach. But on a recent trip to Colorado, I was confronted with the reality that I had a better chance of being incarcerated than I did being honored by Delta for being such a loyal patsy all these years. For the most part, things went
