Hall temporarily withdraws Glades permit application is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene Contributing writers Jane Harrison, Millie Adcox Columnists Glenn Burns, Roy Crittenden, Steve Johnson, Mike Rudderham, Ken Sturdivant Travel Editor Bill Vanderford Lakeside is published monthly by Lanier Publishing, Inc. based in Gainesville, GA, with distribution in some 300 locations around Lake Lanier and other areas. Opinions expressed by contributing writers are not necessarily those of Lakeside, its staff or its advertisers. Manuscripts and photographs submitted will be considered for publication. Lakeside cannot be held responsible for such materials in case of damage or loss.
By Jane Harrison Hall County temporarily withdrew its application to build Glades Reservoir last month in the aftermath of the state’s contention that it is not needed. Hall County Commission Chairman Dick Mecum said the permit application for the proposed 850-reservoir is on hold at least until the master plan for the region’s water allocation is complete. “We are waiting for the Corps report coming out of Mobile to see how Glades fits into it,” said Mecum, referring to the Water Control Manual for the river system upon which the proposed reservoir would be located. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected next fall to finalize the manual that controls allocations on its five dams on the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river system. In the meantime, the county will not spend any more money to supplement its Glades application, Mecum said. The county has spent about $16 million in land acquisition, engineering, legal and consultant fees toward building the reservoir it claims is needed to support Hall County’s
population through 2060. However, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division denied a certificate of need for the reservoir based on state population projections that are significantly lower than the county’s own estimates. Mecum said “it would be redundant and make no sense to spend taxpayers’ money on something we’ve already done” to document expected population growth. The county’s projections “were accepted in the past and should still be sufficient,” he said. Rather than spending additional funds to supplement the Glades application, Mecum said the county opted to slow down the application process. The Corps’ final WCM for the river system “will tell us a lot” about Glades’ potential and Georgia’s water future needs, Mecum said. “Hall County is of the opinion that (the WCM) may very well justify a need for Glade Reservoir, as well as others of a similar nature,” states the county’s letter to the Corps requesting temporary withdrawal of the permit. Glades received favorable mention in the Corps’ draft WCM released in Oct. 2015 in which the
agency’s Mobile office named the planned reservoir a preferred alternative to Lake Lanier as a Hall County water supplier; but it stated that it considered Glades solely for analytical purposes and that its inclusion did not constitute an agency decision on its merits. The Corps regulatory office in Savannah originally expected to make a decision on the Glades permit in November 2016. It suspended work on the Glades Environmental Impact Statement due to the county’s temporary withdrawal of the permit. “When the county submits information necessary to complete evaluation of this proposed project, the Corps will resume application processing,” said Corps Project Manager Richard Morgan. It is not particularly unusual for applicants to withdraw an ap-
plication and resubmit later, according to Billy Birdwell, spokesman for the Corps Savannah District. There is no deadline for resubmission. In its letter to the Corps, county officials also emphasized their intent to continue to pursue Glades approval “with all deliberate speed and diligence, once additional information is available.” Asked how confident he is about ultimate approval for Glades, Mecum, who is not seeking re-election, remained circumspect. “It’s iffy … I want to see what the (WCM) has to say.” Speculations as to Glades’ future if the county is eventually denied a permit have ranged from its potential as a state-operated, state funded reservoir to augment flows during droughts and a possible county park connecting to Don Carter State Park.

Since October we have been privileged to work with Bob and Diane Pierce who came to Gainesville from Tennessee to find their dream lifestyle on the lake. Working with them was a joy. After their home in Tennessee closed they rented in the area until they found their dream home on beautiful Lake Lanier. They chose this location after having read many articles touting the affordability of the area and close proximity to Atlanta which makes Lake Lanier a targeted retirement community. Working with our buyers has always been such a treat for us and that certainly held true with the Pierces and their faithful companion, Rosco, who accompanied them to each listing as he had to approve of his new home too! We wish Bob and Dianne many years of watching the sunset views from their new Lake Lanier home!

NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK SET FOR MAY 21-27
Life jacket wear on the water is simple life-saving strategy As the weather starts to warm up, we’re all anxious to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Families and friends gather together to enjoy the outdoors, travel on vacations and spend time on the water – boating, fishing, sailing and more. It’s important to remember the safety precautions to take during all of these recreational water activities. But, with approximately 500 people drowning each year from recreational boating accidents, it is imperative to push the message of “Wear It!” Wear your life jacket at all times while you are on the water. “Accidents on the water can happen much too fast to reach and put on a stowed life jacket,” said Virgil Chambers, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council. “It’s important that everyone wear a life jacket while on the water. There’s no reason why you, your family and friends, can’t have fun on the water while also choosing to always wear a life jacket.” Here are a few boating safety tips to keep in mind this boating season:
• Make sure your life jacket is U.S. Coast Guard approved and fits properly. Double check that Roy your life jacket is appropriate for Crittenden your favorite boating activities. • Life jackets meant for adults USCG do not work for children. The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant
A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides Lake level: Down .49 feet from full pool. Clarity: Creeks are stained, main lake clear. Temperature: Mid-70s. Bass fishing Bass fishing on Lake Lanier recently has been good. A wake bait or a bomber has been our first choice in the mornings. The focus with these baits should be fairly shallow on flats and shallower rocky points and humps as well. A steady slow retrieve has been best for these baits. When the wake bait/bomber bite slows down, switch to a worm on a 1/8 ounce Davis Shaky Head in these same areas, if the wind will allow. Focus on points at the mouths of spawning pockets and on secondary points as well. The spots and the largemouth are on beds all over the lake. The warm weather and recent full moon phase kicked them in gear. The spots will often be just out of sight on points, shallow humps and pockets. A fluke is a great search bait for these fish. A drop shot rig with a 4-inch worm is a great follow up bait if the fish does not eat the fluke. Work the
rig like a shaky head and watch for light bites. Spots on the bed are generally very aggressive. The largemouth can be much more finicky and you have to work on those girls if you want to catch them. Long running flat clay points are holding fish as well. Often these fish can be found in the 8 to 10 foot depth ranges or shallower on top of these points. A shaky head and a Carolina rig worm are good bets for fish on these areas. This report brought to you by Jimbo On Lanier 770 542-7764 www.jimboonlanier.com. Striper fishing Striper fishing has been a struggle and very good at the same time. The Blueback Herring have been spawning under a full and very bright moon recently and the stripers have gone nocturnal. Night fishing has been off the charts and the daylight hours has been a struggle, especially during the days with blue bird skies and high pressure. You have several options for night fishing. Cast Bombers to the banks and also pitch blueback herring to lighted docks or you can pull planner
boards as close to the bank as possible. The blueback spawn should be over soon, the nights will be a little darker and we can get back a more traditional daylight bite. Focus on points, reef markers and clay banks. Pulling Blueback Herring on free lines and planner boards, casting top water and buck tail jigs, pitching Herring, or pulling Umbrella rigs are all good techniques. There are fish lake wide with mid lake having a slight advantage over the extreme north and south. The lake temperature has jumped into the low to mid 70s and it should be interesting to see if this sudden rise in water temperature effects fishing. This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of www.bigfishonguide.com. Crappie fishing Crappie: I suspect that the majority of the crappie have spawned. However, there are a few big fish being caught in docks that are at 10 feet depths or less, which indicates a few have not completed their spawn. One good thing about fishing the post
Call Now For: Transporting Detailing & Maintenance “the connection between boat buyers and sellers”

spawn is that most of the fish have headed back to their original habitat. You can catch them on stand alone submerged brush piles in 25 foot depths or shallower, or you can catch them on deeper docks with structure. Use your Lowrance down scan and side scan to locate. These fish tend to be the bigger fish. If size does not matter to you, the docks with structure in more shallow water and brush piles and blow downs in more shallow water can produce the numbers. The fish in more shallow water (especially those in blow downs) tend to darken in color and are mostly male. Keep in mind that the majority of the crappie in Lake Lanier are the black crappie species which change color throughout the year, depending on their depth and water temperature. Fishing is good to excellent, and the fish are willing to bite live minnows, hair jigs, and soft body jigs. If you are fishing the deeper brush piles, use 1/16 ounce jig heads, especially on a windy day. When we fish deeper blow downs, we also double rig with 1/24 ounce jig heads. The
trolling bite is good in the early morning and late afternoon/early evening, whether long line trolling with two curly tail jigs or tight line trolling with crappie minnows and a 3/8 ounce double swivel sinker in a Carolina rig. Take advantage of the good fishing and great weather and enjoy the lake before it gets too hot and too crowded. Wear your life jacket it can save your life! This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net. Note: Call Ken Sturdivant about the “On the Water Schools” for Sonar or the Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass or a full day striper school.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK ‘Road to Rio’ begins at Lake Lanier Pan Am Games kicks off 20th anniversary of Lake Lanier’s Olympic venue By Jane Harrison 2016 Olympic Continental Qualifier on Lake Lanier May 1922 ignites a hot season celebrating the 20th anniversary of the venue that first brought the world to Gainesville. In the Continental Olympic Pan American Championships, also known as the Pan Am Games or Pan Ams, Olympic hopeful kayakers and canoeists from North, South, and Central America and island countries will race for Olympic berths at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. When Atlanta Olympic officials named Lake Lanier the site for canoe/kayak and rowing events in the 1996 Olympics, the entire community launched an unprecedented welcoming effort that earned Gainesville a reputation for its hospitality. The Pan Am Games has generated a fraction of the excitement – after all, it’s a continental contest, not “The Olympics” – but in late April news was getting out and community spirit beginning to swell. Long before April, paddles began spinning ambitiously to welcome the world back to Lanier. The Olympic spirit has long inspired the athletes who will be paddling the races of their lives at Pan Ams; it also has been a major impetus for renovating the 20 year old venue, rallying community resources, signing on volunteers, and throwing a party. About 250 athletes expected Exactly who’s coming to compete would remain unclear until early May when participating countries were expected to complete their own national qualifying events. Eight local paddlers were among the hundreds striving for results on the world stage. Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club kayakers Chris Miller, Stanton Collins, Aaron Mullican, Alex McLain and Farran Smith, plus canoeists Ben Hefner, Ian Ross and Gavin Ross hoped to make the Pan Am-bound squad in the USA Canoe/Kayak national team trials April 29-30 at LLOP. Lakeside News plans a special online story after the trials to announce who will represent the U.S. at Pan Ams. Tim Hornsby, a 2012 Olympic paddler who got his start with LCKC but trains else-

where, also hoped to make the qualifier part of his Olympic return, this time to get a medal. Prior to the USACK team trials, LCKC and U.S. National Team coach Claudiu Ciur expressed confidence local paddlers would qualify for Pan Ams, win in front of the home crowd, and go on to the Olympics. Ten-year kayaker Chris Miller described the thoughts that go through his head when a decade of work bears down at the starting line of one race. “Right before the gun goes off I think to myself that this is what I have been training for and it’s going to hurt like hell but I want it more than the man next to me and I will finish ahead of him,” said the 24-year-old paddler. Such will be the mindset at Pan Ams as athletes compete for an allotted number of slots from the Americas to send to the Brazil Olympics in August. Although Pan Am races include numerous categories, the Olympic dream will be realized only by top finishers in a few specified events: Men’s single kayak (K1) and dou-
ble kayak (K2) 200 and 1000 meters; men’s single canoe (C1) 1000 and 200 meters; men’s double canoe (C2) 1000 meters; Women’s K1 and K2 500 meters; Women’s K1 200 meters. There are no women’s canoe events in the 2016 Olympics. The water begins to heat up when Men’s K1 and K2 1000 heats begin at 9 a.m. May 19 and will conclude with final nonOlympic events around noon May 22. Action on the water breaks for lunch and individual awards ceremonies the first three days, resumes around 1:30 p.m., and concludes about 4 p.m. (Schedule: lakelanierolympicvenue.com). If last year’s Pan Ams in Canada during a non-Olympic year offer any hint about this year’s rivalries, expect U.S. paddlers to face strong competition from Canada, Cuba, Mexico, and Argentina. A Toronto newspaper noted “Cuba is the toughest team with a paddle in the Pan Am Games,” having won 25 percent of all medals and 30 percent of See Pan Am, page 16

So, what are the values of these programs to you?
Before you ansswer, just think abou ut these questions:
i If LLA had not removed 25 ² 40 tons of trash each year for the last 27 years, what would your view of Lake Lanier look like?
i If LLA had not monitored lake quality for the past 15 years, wh w at wo w uld we know about the condition of the lake?
i If LLA had not picked up the challenge of removing abandoned boats and derelict docks, who would?
i If LLA had not accepted the challenge of installing solar lights in the lake, who would have? ?

i If LLA did not create a project to protect islands that are disappearing from erosion, who would have? As they say, a picture is work a thousand words, so take a minute to scan through the attached story boards about these projects. The bottom line is that if LLA did not exist, you would probably create an organization to do what it does. • Pan Am Continued from Page 14 golds. Pending final selection of national teams, spectators may see local paddlers line up against 2012 Olympic bronze medalists from Canada: Mark De Jonge, Men’s K1 200, and Mark Oldershaw, Men’s C1 1000. Canada planned to pick its Pan Am athletes after their National Team Trials May 5 at LLOP. Preparing the Venue Prior to the Oct. 2014 announcement that the Pan Am Games were coming to Lanier, the governing body of Lake Lanier Olympic Park brainstormed about how to keep it afloat in the world of flatwater venues boasting tens of millions in new investments. Always a favorite for competitors because of its straight, forest-protected 2000 meter channel, the Lanier site lacked modern infrastructure to hold a high stakes international competition. By the time the starting horn sounds to begin the games, the original Olympic site will have undergone a $1.1 million upgrade in a few months, financed by local donors, city and county funds, and a regional grant.
Gainesville-Hall ’96 board members have remarked that the improvements for Pan Ams will be “left behind” for the community to use after the closing ceremony, just as the stone grandstands and plaza remained after the venue’s last international competition. The International Canoe Federation held its sprint flatwater championships there in 2003. Renovations on the tower/plaza side of the Clarks Bridge venue, Phase 1 of a master plan that expands to the boathouse side, “are a great start and go a long way towards modernization” of the facilities originally built as “temporary” for the Olympics, said Matthew Millard, architect with Millard Inc., Architects. The Roswell-based firm with ties to the Lake Lanier Rowing Club designed the upgrades; local contractor Carroll Daniel Construction expected to complete them before the Games begin. New restrooms, a bridge spanning the plaza, and a wheelchair ramp make the iconic tower a more user-friendly, accessible place. “ADA and wheelchair ac-

Officials will no longer need to exit the tower to make a run for the restroom. Additionally, electrical and heating/air services, barely adequate 20 years ago, were updated at the tower and service building on the plaza, which lacked central heat and air conditioning, Millard said. A new window opens out to the plaza from an expanded concession area in the service building. The race course itself has nine new starting docks and a renovated system of starting gates. bished Olympic-style rings, and a stone façade on the service building give the Olympic venue a park-like ambience beyond its original utilitarian service as an athletic facility. Community offers hospitality The resourcefulness and spirit of a community that welcomed the world in 1996 re-emerged somewhat for the Olympic qualifier. From the flower girls at the awards ceremonies to the podium medalists will stand on and the food they eat, Pan Ams will have a home-grown aura. After international athletes fly into the Atlanta airport, they will shuttle to an Athlete’s Village at Brenau University for their first taste of Southern hospitality in everything from décor and food to friendly acclimation to their off-the-water abode. Brenau Chief Financial Officer David Barnett, also a GH ’96 board member, said the brief transformation from academic institution to athletes’ living quarters comes after the semester’s end, when most students will be gone. The ancient Chinese treasure ships were real after all Reading one of the many boating magazines I subscribe to, I ran across this story I thought you might find interesting. Back in the time of the Ming Dynasty, the third emperor “Yongle” had a Mongol eunuch as his right hand man and he chose him to be the admiral of his fleet of ships. He was known as Admiral Zengh HE. But the ships are the story. They were much larger than those used by Vasco Da Gama or Christopher Columbus. The largest of the treasure ships fleet was 450’ long x 160’ wide with four decks and nine masts for twelve sails. The ships were called Bǎochuáns. They even had private rooms for travelers. Maybe this was the first cruise ship. It also had water tight bulkheads that created compartments that kept them afloat if rammed. The compartments were also used for fresh water for the crew and animals on board. The boats were capable of carrying 500 passengers. The stories of these ships and their travels were largely considered a myth, until a spring day in 1962. Workers were dredging on the Yangtze riverfront of Nanjing when they discovered a buried wooden timber 36 feet long. It was a steering post, and embedded in the mud alongside were the decaying remains of a rudder whose surface area works out to 452 square feet. It’s big enough to maneuver a 21st century aircraft carrier. The remains of the rudder are nearly 600 years old. Overnight an improbable myth became reality. These Bǎochuáns, as they were called, must have been a sight with 60 of them under sail with accompanying support ships. Admiral Zengh HE made seven voyages. The first was the largest with 317 ships, 60 being the huge Bǎochuans. Sounds like a huge armada. These voyages took them as far as East Africa and numerous ports in between. Admiral Zengh HE died during the final voyage and they buried him at sea. The Chinese used celestial navigation and also were using compasses a century before British and Spanish explorers. A stone pillar was erected at Chang Le A Harbor in Fujian providence. Admiral Zengh HE’s voyages were recorded on the stone pillar. The pillar is now in a small museum near the harbor. The calligraphy is worn after

Riverkeeper opens new office in Gainesville By Pamela A. Keene It’s a big move for the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s Headwaters office in Hall County. By the end of May, the organization will have completed its move into a new 900-square-foot space just off the square in Gainesville facing Washington Street. With the move, it will be increasing its office space by nearly 75 percent. The new office will have two fulltime employees. “Our goal of community outreach to the headwaters is extremely important and with this move we are able to be more centrally located and also raise further awareness of our work,” said Janet Westervelt, headwaters outreach manager. “Several of our headwaters programs will be accessible from this office, including our neighborhood water watch that was begun in 2010 and the lake sampling that we started in 2012.” The neighborhood water watch program identifies and tracks sources of pollution, raises public awareness and organizes events for community engagement through clean-ups and paddle trips. Riverkeeper’s headwater watershed protection specialist Dale Caldwell will also work from the office. “Another of our goals is to expand these headwaters programs to more of the tributaries that feed into Lake Lanier,” he said. “There are a number of opportunities for addition volunteers to help us with these initiatives.” Volunteers are needed with the Riverkeeper in a variety of capacities, in addition to water sampling. “From help with sending mailings to helping in our lab, we welcome people to get more involved,” Westervelt said. The Riverkeeper’s partnership with Elachee Nature Science Center has been a high-profile and successful initiative. Called

Now open: Georgia’s seasonal trout streams Make sure you put a trout fishing trip on your list of things to do this spring and early summer, especially with the opening of seasonal trout streams. The streams opened on March 28. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to stock more than 80,000 trout during the last full week of March, with more than one million trout scheduled for stocking by the end
of this year. “The four trout hatcheries in Georgia are full of high quality fish this year,” says John Lee Thomson, trout stocking coordinator for the Wildlife Resources Division. “Almost every water body, with very few exceptions, that is stocked by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources or our partners at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be stocked by Opening Day.” Some popular seasonal

By Pamela A. Keene International visitors to Lake Lanier Olympic Park for the 2016 Pan American Championships this month will be treated to several large-format works created by local artists as part of the Vision 2030 Free Range Art Project. “Our mission is to put more art into the community and this is a perfect opportunity,” says Amanda McClure, executive director of the Quinlan Visual Arts Center. McClure is a member of the Vision 2030 committee at the Greater Hall Chamber of Com-
merce. The Free Range Art Project is a partnership between the Quinlan and the chamber. Five large-format works will be on display at the park during May: • Paul Dunlap: “Two Llamas,” photograph • Fox Gradin: “Real Life Dogs Playing Poker,” photograph • Roxanne Hollosi: “Echoes VI,” mixed media collage • Mary Frances Hull: “Snail Giant,” painting • The Youth Art Month “Quinlan Award” Winner Trevor Ballard: “Peace,” acrylic on canvas, 12th grade, Riverside Military Acad-

It’s great to be back predicting the weather! I want to begin this month’s column with a big thank you to everyone. I had open heart surgery to replace a faulty aortic valve last March 7th. I was off the air for about six weeks. During my recovery I received thousands of emails, cards, well wishes, and prayers. I am so grateful to our Lakeside News readers and WSB viewers for your concern. It really helped my recovery and words cannot express how grateful I am. OK, on with the weather. You may recall my previous columns about the “Godzilla El Nino” that developed during the fall and continued right through the winter. It was supposed to wreak havoc across the country. California on the other hand, was hoping for the worst. As you well know, California has been suffering from a multi-year drought. While the Sierra saw some decent snowfall over the winter, southern California failed to get the frequent rains normally associated with a strong El Nino. The Rocky Mountain states had many major snowstorms. The skiing community loved that and ski resorts had a tremendous boost in revenues. The upper Midwest to Texas saw milder than average temperatures. The Northeast and New England, buried by snow in the winter of 20142015, saw very little snow during the winter and extremely mild temperatures. Here
in the Southeast, we had some cold snaps but they are very brief. We Glenn also saw a few brief Burns snow threats but they sure did not amount to Lanier much. With an El Nino Outlook as strong as this one, a major ice storm around the Lake Lanier basin seemed very likely. In fact, the National Weather Service office discussions prior to the heart of winter suggested there could be multiple ice storms. As we all know, that did not happen either. As we head into the heart of spring I am have been amazed at how much of an inactive severe storm season we have had. Granted we had a couple of scares but overall, it’s been quiet … too quiet. We can only hope it lasts. The latest prediction from NOAA is for El Nino to continue to fade away and the pattern to become “neutral.” That means no Pacific Ocean cooling or warming through the summer. A neutral pattern means we are likely to have a good oldfashion Georgia summer. It will be hot and humid with that ever present chance of pop-up afternoon thunderstorms. Of course, the most active month for the pop-up storms is July. NOAA is also suggesting we may go from the neutral pattern this summer to more of a La Nina pattern by fall. If that indeed happens, we might have an extremely warm winter. We will have a lot to talk about in the months

Four Mile Creek to continue their love affair with water and the environment. Connecting to the lake “Lake Lanier has always been an important part of both of our lives,” he says. “Diane, who’s from Atlanta, can remember when the lake was being built.” The couple met at Georgia Tech and Rooks was a groomsman in Diane’s first wedding to one of his fraternity brothers and best friends. They kept in touch over the years, both families often spending recreational time together with all their children, especially on Lanier. When Diane’s first husband passed away in the early 1980s, she embraced sailing. Several years later, the two married. Between them, they have six children and 16 grandchildren. ‘We have a ski boat these days, mostly for the grandchildren,” he said. As they settled in on the lake, the couple joined the Lake Lanier Association. Soon Rooks was tapped by the board because of his commitment to the lake, his excellent business acumen and his passion for community service. “We started out with the water-sampling program because water quality is so important to the lake,” he said. “We’ve always been active wherever we’ve lived and it was just natural to get involved with the Lake Lanier Association.” Rooks’ work with the environment and his history with various groups in Atlanta quickly put him back in the position of environmental activist. “One day Pat Stevens, then environmental planning division chief of the Atlanta Regional Commission, called and asked if I’d join with a handful of people to explore an alternative to the legal battle between Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Val Perry and I represented the association in a meeting of eight people in LaGrange from up and down the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint River Basin. Our goal at that meeting was to determine if we needed a second meeting,” he said with a smile.
Needless to say, that was the beginning of the ACF Stakeholders, a grassroots group of 56 stakeholders from the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River to the Gulf of Mexico that work with state and federal agencies regarding management recommendations for the basin. Rooks helped write the group’s charter and served as the first chairman. Over the past eight years, the organization has met regularly throughout the ACF basin. “I had a real eyeopening experience when the head of the Atlanta Watershed Department sat next to an oysterman and they talked candidly about what’s good for the basin as a whole,” he said. “It demonstrated to me that there was a bigger picture to consider. And we’ve been able to do what no one else has – three states, 14 water interests, and four subbasins – to get those 56 people to agree to a plan to manage the water in the ACF basin.” Reaching a milestone Last May, the group finalized its recommended Sustainable Water Management Plan, “a real milestone. We all negotiated acceptable criteria and have been trying to get the states to buy into their processes for what’s good for the basin,” he said. “Of course, that’s not really happening because of the current lawsuit between Florida and Georgia in the U.S. Supreme Court, and until that’s settled I’m afraid not much
else will happen. The SWMP was built on compromise and therein lies the dilemma. The states have agreed to mediation, but I don’t know how it will unfold. What we do know is that the more we publicize what we’ve learned, the more people will understand it.” Rooks continues his support of the lake. He is working with the Institute of Water Resources, part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ think tank, to bring them into the important topic of drought planning for the ACF Basin. He’s enjoying his semi-retirement as well. He is involved with two companies headquartered in Paris and Germany, plus he and Diane actively travel the world. Recent trips included Kenya, the Galapagos, Machu Picchu, Greece, India and two weeks trekking in Nepal that included the Annapurna Base camp along with hiking trips to Sicily, Isle of Wight and France. “You know, there’s a recurring theme in our lives these days, as it has always been,” he said. “For active people like us, no matter where we are, we have a feeling of responsibility to protect the environment. We have an obligation to take care of it. As the center of metro Atlanta moves northward along Georgia 400, it’s even more important to keep that message out there. Atlanta runs on water, and it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep these issues at the forefront.”
The Rooks enjoyed two weeks trekking in Nepal last fall that included a visit to the Annapurna Base camp (left).

State officials meet with mediator in effort to settle lawsuit By Jane Harrison Top Georgia and Florida officials expected to continue meetings with a nationally known mediator to work toward resolution of decades-long disputes over water. Principals from the offices of the Georgia governor, attorney general and environmental protection division talked by phone and met in person for more than eight hours last month with the unnamed mediator and Florida representatives in efforts to settle a 2013 Florida lawsuit. The Sunshine State accuses Georgia of hoarding water on the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river system and causing environmental and economic harm to the Panhandle downstream. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on the river system that flows freshwater into the oyster fisheries in Apalachicola.
Prominent Maine attorney, 86year-old Ralph Lancaster, Jr., a veteran Supreme Court special master, has harped on settlement since he took the helm of pretrial proceedings in Oct. 2014. Both states spent tens of millions of dollars piling millions of pages of documents and electronic files into the evidence heap before heeding Lancaster’s advice to seek mediation late last year. Georgia at one time hired 70 fulltime lawyers to submit and review evidence. The name of the mediator – an individual Lancaster praised as “nationally known and excellent” – remains confidential by court order. “She is obviously doing a great job,” he said during a six-minute conference call with the states’ legal teams April 5. Lancaster emphasized his eagerness for settlement, telling at-
torneys, “If you are able to reach a deal, let me add that I will be available 24-seven to take your call telling me that this matter is settled. And I mean that.” However, he did warn them that trial deadlines loom in September. If states still want to have a trial, certain legal motions, witness identities, and briefing schedules must be filed. Plus, states would have to choose a courtroom location, a decision Lancaster deems most important. “I say most important because I’ll have to make arrangements for a courtroom and staffing and everything that goes with that. I’m comfortable with any location, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Maine, the District of Columbia, anywhere you prefer and agree on. And if you can’t agree, I’ll tell you I will arbitrarily pick one.”

By Jane Harrison Nautical themed band Yacht Club Revue seems the perfect fit for The Lake Show concert June 4 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. The light rock cover band is expected to make waves at the lakeside plaza with tunes by Prince, Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald and 1970s-era icons. The initial John Jarrard Foundation lake concert last year attracted music fans by land and water. Boaters moored in the Olympic channel behind the stage caught glimpses of Shawn Mullins while those at tables in the grandstands had the best seats. Organizers talked last year about installing a large screen facing the water for boaters to see the show, but it was unclear at press time whether this would be accomplished. The concert will cap off a colorful day of camaraderie and racing at the park with musicians taking the stage after the Gainesville-Hall County Dragon Boat Challenge. Crews from local organizations and businesses will paddle to drummers’ beats in 22person long boats outfitted with plastic dragon heads and tails. The combination of dragon boat racing, live music, beer and food is expected to draw a diverse crowd to the park. Individual tickets are $20; sponsor tables with dinner and drinks for six people go for $400.

New twists and turns for Pirates of Lanier Poker Run in mid-July By Pamela A. Keene Maybe Kenny Rogers needs to attend this year. After all, he could advise players when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. Either way, this year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run is upping the ante with a Thursday night, July 14, Casino night to raise additional funds for its three children’s charities – the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hall County, Camp Sunshine, and Camp Twin Lakes. The event is scheduled to take place at Grand Hall at Lanier Islands from 7 to 11 p.m. “We’re bringing in a profes-
sional company to run our Monte Carlo Casino night,” said Dan Jape, president of Lanier Partners. “Admission to the Thursday night party is free; people can buy in to participate in the games that include Black Jack, Roulette, Craps and Money Wheels. There will be big prizes, and all the proceeds will go to benefit the kids.” A donation of $50 buys $100 in chips for the casino games. There will also be a Texas Hold ‘em Tournament with limited seating. Buy in for the tourney is $250 for $1,000 in chips. See Poker Run, page 39

For loyal Skogie’s fans, Tony Jonovitch has brought his winning style to downtown Gainesville. He and his wife Heather have taken over the space formerly occupied by Turnstile Deli and brought back a great place to see your neighbors and have a super meal. It’s open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by and check it out. Now, on to on-the-water choices for 2016. Skogie’s at Gainesville Marina is open Wednesday through Sunday and will open seven days beginning on Memorial Day weekend. The talk of the town is Skogie’s Saturday and Sunday breakfasts – signature Benedicts and the addition of a fried chicken Benedict, plus new breakfast sandwiches and waffles. Music Friday through Sundays keeps the place hopping. Drive your boat and park at the marina’s courtesy slips. Call (678) 450-1310 or visit www.skogies.net. Holiday Marina’s brand new gas dock and floating fully stocked ship’s store includes even more courtesy slips for guests to Twisted Oar. If you haven’t been there since owner Cary Eubank remodeled last season, you’re in for a treat. Eubank stayed open all winter and is ready for a great summer season. He’s added oys-

An awesome deck, a two-sided bar and a large covered patio with entertainment Thursday through Sunday and special games and promotions during the week make it a top destination. “A lot more people know we’re here now and they had a chance to get their lake fix this winter, because we’re right on the water,” he said. ‘We made a lot of new friends and look forward to a great summer.” For info: 678714-7572 or www.thetwistedoar.com. Pelican Pete’s at Port Royale off Browns Bridge Road has revved it up a couple of notches since last summer. Brian Grill has a year under his belt as manager and he’s going strong with new décor and great menu items, including buffalo calamari, New England shrimp rolls and coconut shrimp. Currently open Friday through Sunday, the lake’s only floating restaurant will start seven-day operation on Memorial Day weekend. “We’ve livened up the décor to an even more island
and nautical theme to enhance the guest experience,” Grill said. “We’ve got a great family setting here and we are conveniently located with the best views on the lake.” Music on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons often features local favorite Dave Craver. Port Royale has 50 courtesy slips that serve Pelican Pete’s. For more info call 770887-5715 or visit www.bestin-

Atlanta’s fastest-flying family is online again. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources camera at www.georgiawildlife.com is streaming live video of a pair of peregrine falcons nesting atop SunTrust Plaza Tower. The Garden Club of Georgia Inc. is also a project partner. HDOnTap provides streaming services. Live-streaming wildlife is always a challenge, and this nesting season is no different. The falcons are nesting in a planter opposite where the camera was first set up. DNR has moved the camera but will be streaming temporarily from inside the building to avoid disturbing the birds during this sensitive part of the nesting cycle. animals on Earth. Peregrines have been clocked “stooping,” or diving, on pigeons, ducks and other birds in flight at more than 200 mph. These built-for-speed raptors were removed from the federal list of threatened and endangered species because of a successful population recovery effort. Yet the birds are still state-listed as rare in Georgia. What’s not so rare now is seeing up-close what nest life is like for one pair of Atlanta falcons. Help conserve peregrines and other nongame wildlife, native plants and natural habitats through buying or renewing an eagle or hummingbird license plate, or contributing directly to the Georgia Nongame Wildlife Conservation Fund. Both support DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section, which receives no state funds for its mission to conserve native wildlife not hunted, fished for, trapped or collected.

Gainesville Upper Lanier Water Trail takes paddlers to city parks By Jane Harrison Outdoor enthusiasts love trails, traditionally footpaths leading to discoveries from point to point or on a loop. But, foot travel is not the only way to traverse from trailhead to trailhead on Lake Lanier. Folks can leave their hiking boots in the closet and explore five jewels on the Gainesville Upper Lanier Water Trail in a canoe or kayak. A brief afternoon tour on a section of the new water trail with two preeminent local kayakers who helped develop it provided a glimpse of the park to park course and a sample of the activity that put them on decades-long paths to inspire others to enjoy and care for lakes and rivers. Seventh generation Gainesville resident Gary Gaines bought his first kayak in 1981 and fell in love with the headwaters of Lanier on the Upper Chattahoochee near Helen. He rode the joy of stroking between boulders on North Georgia’s rapids to the flatwater, where he started the Lake Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club in 1994, two years before Olympic paddlers stroked toward their dreams on Lanier. “Paddling is a lifetime sport and has been my passion for over 30 years. I have had the good fortune to enjoy the beauty of rivers and lakes and oceans across this country in a kayak or canoe,” said the longtime paddler whose contributions to the sport have put thousands on the water and charted trails for them to follow. Bonny Putney moved to the Lanier area from Chicago about the same time Gaines started riding the rapids. Lured by the water, she found her place on the south end of the lake and later ventured forth with a paddle to explore. She got hooked on paddling 12 years ago on the Georgia River Network’s maiden Georgia Paddle journey, a multi-day group paddling and camping journey. Both have paddled extensively in the Southeast and elsewhere, forging friendships on the water and leading organizations that protect it. City realized potential So, when the idea for a Gainesville water trail surfaced several years ago, they got on board. Charlotte Gillis from the National Park Service spoke with Friends of Gainesville Parks about a vision to connect the Upper Chattahoochee River with the Chattahoochee National
Recreation Area below Buford Dam into Atlanta through a series of launch sites for paddlers on Lanier. “Gainesville Parks and Recreation recognized the immediate benefit of the Gainesville Upper Lanier Water Trail for our citizens,” said Julie Butler Colombini, city parks marketing director. Putney recounted how “a few of us got together and started working with Julie to develop the Gainesville locations using the Upper Chattahoochee River Water Trail as our template.” Putney and Gaines worked with Chattahoochee Riverkeeper to help develop the upper trail, a 36.2 mile river trail from Helen to Don Carter State Park that rushes from Class II to III rapids in the mountains into the flatwater of Lanier. Extending the trail from the state park to city parks on Lanier followed a natural inclination to paddle on. “Nowadays everyone loves outdoor trails and we are so fortunate to have a water trail that connects Clarks Bridge Park to Don Carter State Park to all the Gainesville city parks on Lanier,” Gaines said. Four parks linked The new Gainesville water trail flows naturally into the city’s park design linking four lakeside Gainesville parks. “What makes the Gainesville Upper Lanier Water Trail such a natural and easy fit for the community is that each of the five parks along the water trail already have easily accessible launch and landing spots” determined by specific natural or manmade amenities already in place, Butler Colombini said. The parks department installed visible signage that identifies them. Launch sites at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, Holly, Longwood and Lanier Pointe, with a stopover at Linwood Nature Preserve, put lake travelers on a flatwater route that’s much bigger and more satisfying than a circuitous paddle on a quiet cove. “People want a destination, a point to paddle to … but not too far, like the Bataan Death March,” quipped Putney, who knows folks enjoy outdoor ventures with reachable, not tortuous, goals. Dividing the water trail into sections with take-outs at the parks breaks up the 14 mile course into two easy 1-2 hour treks, plus a longer, but not gruel-

ing, stretch with mid-paddle picnic-possibilities on shore. Water travelers can add about four miles if they launch at Don Carter State Park and head down the Chattahoochee River toward the Olympic Park at Clarks Bridge. Two to eight mile segments from the Lake Lanier Olympic Park to Lanier Point Park take lake “hikers” under bridges, into forested coves, and through early lakeside neighborhoods for a look at the diverse waterscape of the nearly 60-year-old lake. Water trail sojourners can pack a picnic for lunch at the beautiful pavilion on the boardwalk at Holly Park and cast a line for fishing at striper-rich Longwood Park. Take in the sights by land The journey might include a leisurely paddle to the Olympic tower, the finish line for past and future Olympians, or a stopover at Linwood Nature Preserve, a quiet sanctuary for native plants and birds. Paddlers can disembark and stretch their legs on trails at Longwood and Lanier Point Park, and even walk into downtown Gainesville via a 2-mile city trail network beginning at Longwood. Public restrooms are located at the Olympic Park and Longwood. Gaines mentioned that campsites would be a nice addition; however there are none currently available at the Gainesville sites. Putney lauded the Lanier trail’s appeal to beginning and intermediate paddlers who want a
calmer trip than adrenaline-hungry whitewater junkies shooting North Georgia rapids. “There will always be a lot of them,” she said. However, she noted flatwater paddling is gaining popularity, as evidenced by the prominence of kayaks and canoes in backyards on Longwood Cove and elsewhere on Lanier. Traversing the lake in a kayak allows a quieter, more intimate inspection of secluded coves and fishing holes than traveling by motor boat. Somehow propelling a boat with your own power creates a bond between paddler and water, a feeling of fluid oneness that gently ripples with each dip of the paddle. Perhaps that’s why Gaines and Putney care deeply not just for the aesthetics and enjoyment of the Gainesville trail, but also for the quality and longevity of the element under
their boats. As they approached Longwood Park in the long narrow cove rimmed with boat docks, Gaines and Putney noted sites for Styrofoam and trash pick-up in the next lake clean-up. Gaines observed a steep driveway to a dock where stormwater runoff likely washes sediment into the cove that was dredged years ago. They suggested installing rip rap to stabilize steep clay banks shedding mud into the cove near the park. As the paddlers eased onto shore next to Longwood’s fishing pier, curious children playing at the park watched as those who arrived by water lugged boats to a trailer hitched to Putney’s vehicle. “This is the exercise part of paddling,” Putney joked. Shuttles and rentals may be possible in the future as the parks department gauges the demand for additional services.

Grow up for some flashy stunning color this summer If your garden is like mine, the horizontal growing spaces and flower beds are quickly vanishing. I can’t resist buying new plants every time I get a catalogue or go to the nursery; needless to say, our garden is quickly filling up. The solution? Grow up. Using vines and climbers you can maximize your gardening space. Add arbors, tee-pee supports or some mesh fencing to get the most of all your garden area. You can even loosely wrap chicken wire or plastic mesh with 1-inch squares around a tall tree stump then let the vines grow to cover it. You’d be surprised at the number of choices for vines and climbers. Clematis vines, cross vine and Lady Banks rose put on spectacular displays. Jasmine vines are prolific bloomers. Native Yellow Carolina Jasmine grows wild in woodlands, and you can also purchase it from box garden centers and nurseries. The spring blossoms smell slightly like talcum powder and, once the vine is established, cover the vine and its support. A new term in boating: wing in ground
Letter to the editor
Reporter thanked for coverage Pam Keene, Thank you for the excellent article on the LLA annual meeting in your April edition of Lakeside on Lanier. You certainly captured the salient points we were trying to communicate. You also got the “big news” right on the abandoned boat funding we are expecting from the state once Gov. Deal approves the 2017 budget. This shouldn’t surprise anyone because you are always “spot on” when it comes to issues and opportunities involving the Lake Lanier community. Your communication skills have helped the LLA in many ways, both externally and internally. In fact, your many columns on our abandoned vessel initiative have heightened the attention and accelerated actions on this issue from a variety of sources, including the USACE, GA DNR, state legislators and
county officials. Due to your historical support, we are getting some state funding against our high risk, problematic eyesores. Additionally, our LLA board has agreed to put resources against removing these safety risks in 2016. We have targeted a long standing, sunken pontoon boat in the Little River area of Gainesville for removal at the expense of the LLA. This is our way of showing an increased commitment to the project and a partnership we are developing with the DNR and the local counties moving forward. More information will be available soon. Thanks again for all you and Lakeside News do to support the LLA and Lake Lanier community. Working together, our great Northeast Georgia asset can remain clean, full and safe. Boating might get faster ... a lot faster. Low profile sport fishing vessels carry tremendous velocity over the water and PWCs are getting larger and quicker. They pale, however, in speed comparison to the newest form of operating on the water. Soon the private boater will be able to literally fly over the surface at speeds of 100 mph plus. Sounds odd that boats could fly but they have for many years. Remember Howard Hughes and the “Spruce Goose?” That could be considered the founding concept for this form of water transportation also known as ground effect. It’s called WIG or Wing in Ground and it’s been used since the mid 1960s (www.wigcraft.com). The Navigation Rules of the Road classify these vessels at the very end of the hierarchy (responsibility) in right of way situations, even lower than Sea Planes. Once reserved for military operations in Littoral Naval Combat or near shore environments, these vessels now are being developed for private and commercial use in a variety of configurations. Six Mile Bass Club based in Cumming recently won the FLW/TBF State Championship held on Lake Eufaula in Eufaula, AL. The club established in 2007 has won a Team State Championship three times and has four individual state champions since their founding. Club President and cofounder Craig Monnin said they were proud to win the team championship this year at Lake Eufaula as it fishes very differently than Lake Lanier. The tournament, hosted by Georgia Bass Federation, invites the top teams throughout the state to its annual championship tournament. This year, Eufaula Chamber of Commerce and Lakepoint Resort sponsored hosting the event which drew 30 teams and nearly 180 anglers from throughout Georgia. • Pan Am Continued from Page 16 the festive environment that welcomes athletes. Some students, primarily student athletes from Brenau and the University of North Georgia, will serve as ambassadors, helping visitors with registration, checkin, and general orientation at the village. Barnett added the university, with its focus on international students and athletics, offers many bi-lingual students, some fluent in Spanish, others in Portuguese, who volunteered to help. Pan Ams also generated excitement for Brenau staff, including tennis coach Andre Ferreria, from Brazil, and Chef Adrian Bailey. Barnett said the athletes’ table will be set with protein-rich food Bailey prepares from loads of healthy fare shipped in by Aramark, an institutional food service provider. Athletes will ride luxury buses provided by Lula-based Daniel’s Charters to and from Brenau and LLOP.
Pan Am volunteer T-shirts
In mid-April, Tate O’Rouke, Pan Am volunteer coordinator, reported 248 people had signed up to fill 599 opportunities to help out. Volunteers will direct parking, drive safety boats, operate webcast cameras, run results from the tower, sell refreshments, present bouquets at award ceremonies and perform other tasks that get them up close to potential Olympic contenders. O’Rouke said about a month before the Games, organizers were in the final stretch filling volunteer positions. “This is an amazing opportunity to showcase the hospitality Gainesville/Hall County and the state of Georgia is known for. We are getting in front of as many people as possible through face to face meetings, target emails and newsletters,” she added. Among organizations saying they’d help are the local canoe/kayak and rowing clubs plus the Cresswind Community, Coast Guard Auxiliary, The Longstreet Clinic, Northeast
Georgia Health System, Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce, Hall County Rotary, Hall County Jaycees, Gainesville Rotary, Gainesville Kiwanis, Jackson EMC, and Georgia Power. Some volunteers will get closer to athletes than others in what are probably their most emotional moments. Elementary school girls from Hall County schools will present hand-made victory bouquets to award winners at medal ceremonies at the venue. GH ’96 board member Stacey Dickson, also President of the Lake Lanier CVB, said she easily recruited six flower girls and 13 junior ambassadors. For their efforts, volunteers receive a t-shirt, tickets to the opening ceremony at Brenau’s Pearce Auditorium and a meal if their shift falls during the lunch hour, O’Rouke said. Volunteers will not be the only ones working. Law enforcement personnel from the city and county, plus officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Georgia DNR, and GBI will patrol the venue, lake, and Brenau area. Bomb sniffing dogs will also be on duty. Although security of an international event is likely the weightiest consideration for athletes and organizers, the special moments that recognize individual achievements are probably among the most memorable. Smiling athletes will perhaps shed tears of joy when they accept locally made victory bouquets and medals on an award podium, also hewn by the host city’s people. According to Dickson, volunteers and artists from Gainesville’s Quinlan Visual Arts Center planned to create wingthemed victory bouquets for award winners, who will be awarded medals on a three-piece platform built by Gainesville High School students to replicate the 1996 podium. The medals will feature an LLOP wave motif and etched with the venue’s name. Deal to speak at event Just as in the Olympics, the Pan Am Games open with a parade of athletes, entertainment, and official welcoming remarks. Opening ceremony organizers hope to evoke the Deal “Wow!” factor in a quick paced, exciting program that will include
a brief welcome from Gov. Nathan Deal, who formerly lived and practiced law in Gainesville, a concert by Grammy award winner Mike Farris, and eye-popping, but family-friendly, Brazilian dancers. The ceremony, set for 6 p.m. May 18 at Bureau’s Pearce Auditorium, is themed “Taste of America” with a Brazilian flavor, according to program organizer Gladys Wyant, executive director of Wyant The Arts Council of Gainesville. Athletes will march into the historic auditorium in a cavalcade of flags accompanied by recorded music from their home country. After remarks from Deal, COPAC officials and local dignitaries, the celebration continues with Farris’s performance sure to feature tunes from his 2015 Best Roots Gospel album and other soul/gospel fusion notes he played at the Gainesville Summer Music Fest last year. Wyant said she has been booking Brazilian-style dancers from the Atlanta area with advance notice that the Road to Rio through Gainesville won’t have as much skin in the game as Carnival in Rio. She did not have a list of performers by late April, but word was out that one known lo-
cally as “Coco” might make an appearance. About 100 opening ceremony tickets will be available to the general public through the Olympic venue website. The cost was not available at press time. GH ’96 officials discussed a
ticket package that would include the reception with Gov. Deal, reserved seat at the ceremony, and 4-day VIP pass to the games. The games will close with a low key affair at the Olympic park after the final individual awards ceremony May 22.
Grassy areas are being prepped for the upcoming events at Lake Lanier Olympic Park.
Community hopes for positive economic impact By Jane Harrison Local tourism officials have estimated that slightly larger but less prestigious competitions at LLOP have generated just over $1 million in economic impact. What Pan Ams will leave behind monetarily is uncertain, but the infrastructure the games inspired and whatever reputation Lanier garners in their aftermath will remain. The GH ’96 board expects athletes, spectators and money to spill into downtown Gainesville after competition winds down. However, a quick survey of a few downtown merchants a month before Pan Ams revealed none even knew about it. There was no buzz on the streets and a call to Main Street Gainesville was not returned. Managers at downtown establishments said a reporter’s
call was the first they’d heard about the Olympic qualifier. An afternoon manager at Inman Perk coffee house said she’d spread the word. “We’re excited to have a bunch of people coming to Brenau; people will be coming to the square,” she said. “I haven’t heard anything about it,” said Nick Heckler, owner of Downtown Drafts. “But we’re ready for it,” he added. GH ’96 officials hope Pan Ams kindle community excitement with a string of events culminating in the venue’s 20th anniversary celebration Aug. 5. The butterfly garden dedication May 14, Lake Show Concert and community Dragon Boat races June 4 are part of the lead-in to another Brazilian themed party to commemorate the 1996 Olympics, celebrate LLOP’s longevity, and carry a torch toward a bright future. Gainesville resident Morgan
House knows the Pan Am Games inside and out from the perspective of an Olympic hopeful paddler in 2008 and 2012 and since March 2014 as manager of the venue that launches Olympic dreams. He first ventured there with the ambition of a competitor focused on a single goal; he now attends bridal fairs, speaks to civic clubs, welcomes wake boarders, and screens summer movies in a never ending marathon to expand LLOP’s culture beyond the athletic contest that created it. He, GH’ 96 Chair Mimi Collins, and others with a vision for LLOP see Pan Ams as a celebration of Lake Lanier’s Olympic legacy and a new starting line for future community involvement at the old lakeside jewel they are burnishing for home folks and all the world to enjoy.

Wrightsville Beach: A lazy old surfing town with extras An invisible line of transformation seems to capture the spirit of most sojourners as they cross the bridge over the Intercoastal Waterway to enter the historic surfing town of Wrightsville Beach, N.C. This narrow strip of land near Wilmington is known as the forerunner of surfing all along the East Coast and was even named as one of the top surfing towns in the world by National Geographic Magazine. Today, the waves and the surfing are still a draw, but this sleepy little strip along the Atlantic Ocean has much more to offer. Even before crossing the bridge onto this famous barrier island, travelers should make a stop at the beautiful and eclectic Airlie Gardens with an oak tree that is older than our country. In season, the many flowering plants and gorgeous azaleas are breathtaking, and many couples come here to be married in this picturesque atmosphere. Personally, I found the beauty of the lakes, marshes and wildlife to be stimulating as I walked the many interconnected paths through the spectacular property. For more information, visit: www.airliegardens.org. The next important item on any visitor’s list would have to be a great place to stay, and nowhere on this sleepy island is better than the Blockade Runner. From the outside, this fabulous hotel looks rather drab, but the inside decor and the service provided is some of the best you will ever find. No matter what your desires for activities or eating, you will be as close as the phone in your room ... and, the staff will drive you there when needed. Also, the ocean or Intercoastal views are breathtaking. On the oceanside, sunrises are magnificent and sunsets over the marsh and Intercoastal Waterway on the back are unforgettable. For more information or reservations, visit: www.blockade-runner.com. The salty breeze in your hair and the smell of the ocean are always enough to make the juices flow, but the added mystery of catching something unknown is even stronger for all anglers who venture out on a pier to fish. Probably the most famous fishing pier in this area is the Johnnie Mercer Pier in Wrightsville Beach (www.johnniemercerspiernc.com), which was built in the 1930s but was reduced to rubble by hurricanes Bertha and Fran during the 1990s. Today it is a model of modern engineering

with reinforced concrete capable of sustaining 200 mph winds. It extends 1,200 feet out into the ocean ... making it a prime spot for anglers to catch migrating king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and bluefish during the spring and summer months. The best place to go out and eat at Wrightsville Beach is the Oceanic Restaurant (www.oceanicrestaurant.com) which is right on the ocean. The Crystal Pier attached to Oceanic provides a great outdoor setting and has live music when weather permits. If you just want to grab something tasty to take along when exploring, it would be hard to beat Chops Deli (www.chopsdeli.com) just on the other side of the Intercoastal Waterway at 7037 Wrightsville Ave. It’s no wonder that the surfers fell in love with this laid-back

North Carolina coastal village so many decades ago. Its miles of public beaches and constantly rolling waves bring a fresh breath of life to those seeking to slow the fast pace of society with more easy going adventures where time is not a factor. So, if it’s rest and relaxation you seek in a beautiful setting ... Wrightsville Beach is the place to go! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a The 450 year old Airlie Oak. Legendary Guide.
