Nearly 1,000 volunteers turned out. “We had great coverage at many locations this year and that really helped with our collections,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the association. “We had requested tips from the public and our members about areas that needed extra attention and that gave us a broader area to cover.”

The operation this year had the cooperation of all the marinas on the lake. Additionally, three companies brought their vessels for collection of debris – Marine Specialties Inc., Boat Dock Works and Captain Rick Marton’s “Little Toot.”

“Habersham Marina and Gainesville Marina both received record amounts of trash,” Cloud said. “It also helped that we had advance drop-off places at Deer Island and at Lanier Harbor the week before.”

The association is doing followup site visits to ensure that trash collected has been picked up and the group is still doing some cleanup operations. “We’re encouraging the public to let us know about areas that need to be cleaned up,” Cloud said. “They will be added to our lists.”

Tanner sold his original chain of restaurants about 15 years ago and has recently – within the past 18 months – begun opening Rick Tanner’s Grill and Bar locations across Northeast Atlanta.

The Buford Village location opened last year; a new Rick Tanner’s store at Hamilton Mill opened in early August, joining the Cumming location to give the business partners three locations.

“We plan to open another three restaurants within the next year,” Chartrand said. “We’re right on track.”

Rick Tanner’s specializes in rotisserie chicken and chicken fingers. “About 20 percent of the plates that come out of the kitchen have chicken fingers,” he said. “I can tell you that we’ve served more than 152 million chicken fingers over the past 25 years.” Thirteen different side items draw diners seeking more than just fries or steamed vegetables.

The restaurant also serves pulled pork and brisket, plus Friday and Saturday nights feature prime rib. There are also grilled fish entrees and fish tacos, along with fresh roasted turkey breast used for Reuben’s and open-face sandwiches.

Rick Tanner’s will also roast turkeys with all the trimmings for Thanksgiving meals. “We are already taking orders for Thanksgiving,” Chartrand said.

“It’s a very popular thing to do for the holidays.”

Stretch fishing dollars for more fun on the lake I’m not a political genius, but it’s no secret that the economy is still sluggish and many people are holding back on spending. Hopefully this is not keeping you from enjoying the lake as often as you should. This month, I’ll pass on some tips to make fishing trips more affordable and keep more money in your pocket.

One great way for saving money is by committing to fishing one creek system during the course of an outing. I’ve mentioned this quite a bit in the past for a variety of reasons.

Most anglers hit their favorite sweet spots which are widely scattered on the lake resulting in a lot of riding time and fuel expense. We’re all probably oblivious to some super fishing holes because we’ve never really invested time in fully exploring an area. Some of the major tributaries could even take many trips to fully scout and understand. Give this a try and you could find a whole new set of productive places to do some catching.

When you do move from one spot to another, avoid motoring at full throttle. When you get on plane, back off a bit and run at about two thirds of maximum

speed. This will result in greater fuel efficiency. Another good tip is to keep the weight down in your boat. If you pull everything out of your boat and take a look, you might be surprised at the amount of equipment you’re carrying afloat. Trim down and take only things that are necessary.

Preventive maintenance is not as exciting as catching fish but it will help you toward that goal. As the old adage goes “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Most of these things are very simple.

Every month, remove battery caps and check water levels in the cells. You would be surprised at how many people never do this for a boat or tow vehicle until it’s too late to save a battery. Learn how to check fluid in the lower unit and change it once a year or bi-annually if you fish a lot. It

also pays to periodically check spark plugs for fouling and clean/replace as necessary. This can be especially important if you do a lot of low speed trolling.

Also, take a look at your propeller. If it has nicks and dings on the blades, take it down to the local prop shop for a tune. You’ll get better performance plus it’s a factor in optimum engine longevity.

Save with annual launch permit On the way to the lake, you’re probably going to make a stop at a local gas station and convenient store. Although it’s not as expensive as we have seen, right now gas sells for about $2.60 per gallon and we all know that could change for the worse quickly. One of the best ways to reduce the expense of boat gasoline is to fish with a partner who is willing to share costs. When doing so, make sure you are both on the same page up front about splitting expenses. While solitude can be relaxing, it’s usually more fun to have someone along. Anglers can often benefit by learning from each other’s experience while on the water.

snacks at the local grocery store instead of your favorite fuel stop.

You’ll pay substantially less.

When it comes to snacks, turn out a few sandwiches in your kitchen the night before.

Don’t forget that when you get to the boat ramp, you’re going to have to fork over about $5 as a usage fee. This includes non-towing vehicles as well as those launching boats.

If you fish more than a few times a year, it pays to buy an annual permit at the Corps of Engineers office. I have been a long time fan of launching a boat close to intended fishing areas. I prefer to do more fishing and less riding.

This eliminates the need for long runs to and from the ramp. During winter or periods of inclement weather, it’s also a lot more comfortable. A quick study of your lake map will reveal the most logical places for putting in. Remember that if you fish out of a standard size fiberglass bass boat, your tow vehicle gets far better gas mileage. Instead of making a long haul up or down the lake, consider towing to a second launch location. This strategy alone could easily save $20 in fuel expense. This is also when

that annual launch permit comes in really handy. And, at day’s end, you avoid a long run back to the ramp.

Cut line expense in half Having spent a number of years in the fishing tackle business I have noticed that by far the most common damage to fishing rods occurs to the tip guide. Typically some form of impact will cause the protective hardloy insert to fall out. These rods are often thrown away. Good fishing rods can easily cost upward of a hundred dollars these days.

Anglers can save a lot of money by having the tip replaced at a local tackle shop for the cost of a few dollars. It’s actually best to take the rod with you and have the repair done on site. This ensures a proper match of tip size to the rod. If you opt for the do-ityourself approach, take the old tip with you to get a good match. To remove this, gently heat it with a lighter to melt the glue that holds it in place and pull it off with a set of needle nose pliers. To replace it, melt on a small amount of rod tip glue and slide the new tip in place wiping off any excess glue. It’s that easy. Replacing See Fishing, page 7

Continued from Page 6 damaged rod guides other than the tip are easy home repairs as well. Wrap the replacement guide feet to the rod with a strong fly tying thread using a whip finish method. Coat the repair lightly with a twopart epoxy or even clear fingernail polish and you’re back in business. If you own any reels that are not performing up to par with uneven line spooling or gear issues, consider having them repaired rather than tossing them in the trash can. Often, repairs can be made at very reasonable cost.

Once your reel is in hand, a good repair facility will give you a price estimate to consider before going forward with a job.

Fishing line is a staple item that should be changed often. The price of line has steadily inched higher through the years.

If you use premium lines, braids, or fluorocarbon the prices become higher yet.

How would you like to cut your line expense in half? That’s easily done. Learn how to tie a blood knot or double uniknot. Instead of stripping all the line off your reels, go down to about the half way point and splice in the new line. You can do this all season with bass fishing outfits.

If you fish for stripers this is still a good technique, but I do recommend a full spool replacement periodically.

Cover your investment Maintaining your boat trailer is almost as much fun as mowing and raking the lawn. It typically resides near the bottom

of the “things to do” list if it gets any attention at all. Think about this next time you see a boat stranded beside the road with its owner off somewhere in the tow vehicle trying to get things right. Fortunately, I’ve never been in that situation and I’m sure that no one wants to.

One of the most important things you can do is to grease the bearings two or three times per year. If you don’t take this simple maintenance step seriously, it will require the aforementioned “pound of cure” one day.

Consider a spare trailer tire as an insurance policy. It’s not just to get you back on the road quickly when you have a flat. If you have to leave a boat alone while you search for a spare or repair at any time, all sorts of bad things could happen. Many people have found out the hard way that rod lockers and other locked compartments can be pried open.

On that note, it’s a wise idea to invest in two high quality tamper proof hitch locks for your rig. Use one for towing and the other for storage, even if it’s in your driveway. Also on the preventive maintenance side of things, a high quality boat cover will save you money over the long haul if you cannot park in an enclosed garage. This will protect your investment and prevent damage from the elements.

Bass fishing has been slow lately. The deep water tactics that were producing well back in early to mid September are not putting many fish in the boat these days. Some anglers are still making decent catches, however.

Those who changed targeting shallower areas are still enjoying action. In late September, it’s common to spot bass cruising the shallows and their numbers increase into October. Instead of fishing deep structures on the main lake and creek mouths, move up your favorite creek a bit with a focus on docks and visible cover.

You’ll find fish in two feet to 10 feet of water. If these areas are getting some breeze a small double willow spinnerbait can be a fine lure choice. Choose a natural baitfish color and target every piece of wood, rock, and dock cover you can spot. A number five Shad Rap is another very productive lure pick in this situation. And, don’t forget the every day shakey head rig. Pair your favorite finesse or ring style worm with a 1/8th or 3/16th ounce lead head for a more deliberate presentation if spinnerbaits and crankbaits are not working. The shallow bite will probably be your best bet through the month.

Striper fishing has been very good at press time and the lead core bite remains the best way to put linesides in the boat. A one ounce jig trolled behind eight to nine colors of line is still the way to go. The same types of areas are also still producing: main lake channels and creek mouths over deep water. Some anglers are also scoring well on live blue back herring near the creek mouths and main lake points or humps. Baits fished at 35 feet over bottom depths of 70 feet plus are getting bites.

During this month, look for topwater action to really start firing up. Don’t hit the water without a rod rigged with a Super Spook, Redfin, or another favorite striper topwater plug. As the weather continues to moderate, be alert for any signs of surfacing fish. Get to the school quickly and make your final approach with the electric motor. When the surface action subsides, try free lines baited with herring. Fish these about a hundred feet behind the boat. Add a medium size split shot to one rig to search a deeper depth. Expect striper fishing to be good to excellent through the month.

USCGA boating course offered Oct. 9 Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Lanier, announces a one-day seven-lesson “About Boating Safely” course. The course is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010. This course also serves as a PWC certified course for children under the age of 16. The course will be given at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Operations Center, 6595 Lights Ferry Rd, Flowery Branch, on the left just before the entrance to Aqualand Marina.

Classes run from 8:30 a.m.

until 4:30 p.m. and cost is $40.

Holiday Marina hosts golf tourney for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County

Slated for Friday, October 15, the event is hosted by Holiday Marina and will be held at the Legacy Golf Club at Lake Lanier Islands.

“This has become a fall tradition,” said Alex Laidlaw, vice

president of Westrec Marinas, which owns Holiday. “We anticipate a sold-out tournament with plenty of fun for all the participants who are playing golf for a great cause. We’re happy to be playing on the new Legacy course at Lake Lanier Islands.”

The format this year is a fourman scramble, birdie/eagle.

Registration is $100 per player, $400 per team. There will

also be a million dollar shootout raffle plus a $25,000 hole-in-one contest.

The entry fee includes food, beverage, cart, green fees, gate fee, range balls, drink tickets, golf balls, wind shirt, door prizes and awards.

Stimulus money goes to improve Corps parks Buford Dam Road to close for resurfacing for about five weeks

By Pamela A. Keene Thanks to federal stimulus funding, upgrades and improvements at various Corps of Engineers campgrounds and parks around Lake Lanier are nearing completion. Work has been done at Bald Ridge, Van Pugh South, Bolding Mill, Duckett Mill and Old Federal, with projects ranging from replacing rotted railroad ties with concrete curbs and steps to installing new water spigots at campsites.

Additionally, paving of all the parks along Buford Dam Road is taking place this month and, for a time, the road will be closed for its own resurfacing.

“The road has way more traffic

than it was designed for so we’re repaving, and for safety reasons because the road is so narrow, we’re closing it while doing the repaving,” said Chris Lovelady, assistant project operations manager with the Corps.

Funds have also been used on Powerhouse upgrades and invasive species removal in various parks and along the dam.

The Lake Lanier Project Management Office and Visitor Center will remain open during this road closure with access through the Volunteer Village Complex. Appropriate signage will be in place to direct visitors to the office/visitor center.

Recommended alternates dur-

ing the Buford Dam Road closure are GA Highway 369 which provides travel between Forsyth County and Hall County or GA Highway 20 connecting Forsyth County and Gwinnett County.

The marked detour route via GA Highway 20 will send drivers from Buford Dam. The marked detour routes will send drivers from Buford Dam Road to Suwannee Dam Rd (Gwinnett) to Highway 20 to Samples Rd (Forsyth) to Buford Dam Road and the reverse. Drivers that choose the GA Highway 20 alternate are encouraged to use one of the many routes leading to GA Highway 20 prior to reaching the actual detour.

Dragon Boat Fest combines corporate, Asian culture

By Jane Harrison The competition was almost as hot as Chinese chili sauce as more than 70 teams from corporations, colleges and clubs strained toward the finish buoys Sept. 11 in the Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival. The 15th annual tribute to Asian culture, cuisine and athleticism attracted thousands of competitors and spectators for a hot day of racing at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue.

Event coordinator Gene Hanratty, director of the Atlanta Hong Kong Information Center, deemed the 2010 festival the biggest yet, with about a dozen more teams than have previously entered the races. Hanratty traditionally performs the festival ground work, registering teams and recruiting entertainers, while the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club takes care of everything on the water. It’s a partnership that’s grown to become one of the biggest annual events

held on Lanier.

Daniel Farmer, captain of the Georgia Tech dragon boat team, was thrilled to be on home waters with the top collegiate team. “I grew up in Gainesville and paddled with LCKC” starting in the sixth grade, Farmer said. He got his team in shape and in sync with weekly practices at the venue. “We got to be a close knit team from that,” he said. The 20 Tech paddlers stroked in rehearsed rhythm to dominate the collegiate division, winning two heats and the final in the 16-boat division.

Leigha Fouts, captain of the Gainesville State College team, values the dragon boat experience for the bond it creates among cultures and teammates. “It’s a huge teambuilding sport,” said Fouts, who is also president of the GSC International Student Association.

While the 39-foot boats, decorated with plastic dragon heads and tails glided across 250-, 500- and 2,000-meter races steeped in Asian lore, the Olympic Venue grandstands and plaza buzzed with American corporate culture. Team members from Atlanta area businesses networked, exchanged business cards, and doled out free goodie bags.

The brown dragon boat t-shirts of UPS employees flooded the plaza as the first time festival sponsor worked the crowd. “We want to engage with the community. A lot of different communities come to the event. This is a chance for people to work together and have fun together,” said Juwano Bong, UPS Dragon Boat Coordinator.

At the Home Depot tent, employees gave out orange aprons and mingled with prospective customers. Dragon Boat Team Captain Bob Malhi said his company appreciates being able to “build ties with the Asian community” at the festival.

At mid-day, action on the water took a break and networking in the stands slowed down as Asian dancers and martial arts students performed during the opening ceremony. Festival-goers chowed down on papaya salad, egg rolls, chicken on a stick, vegan burgers and other Asian-American fare. A

cheer arose when it was announced that servers at the Suno Desert booth had gotten more ice to make more Asian shaved ice cream, topped with kiwis and strawberries.

LLRC to host collegiate, youth regattas

By Jane Harrison The Lake Lanier Rowing Club recently won bids for three high profile regattas at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. The American Collegiate Rowing Association announced it will hold its national regatta at the venue May 28 and 29, 2011. The following month, the Southeast Junior Regional Championships are planned on Lake Lanier. In 2013, Clemson University will host the NCAA Women’s National Rowing Championships at the Olympic Venue.

In his announcement about the Lake Lanier selection, ACRA President Gregg Hartsuff reminisced about his experience at the venue. “Having worked on the venue a month during the Atlanta Games and having brought my team there for a few other races and spring training, I am confident the course will provide fair racing and that as a whole the venue will make the regatta a great experience for our student athletes,” Hartsuff said. He also lauded the Gainesville area for convenient and affordable lodging, Atlanta airport access and “a local organizing committee who is excited to have the championship there.”

Kris realized that she wasn’t going to see me unless she started rowing.”

“Rowing was just perfect … it’s low impact with no twisting and turning of the knees. I can do it without injury.”

Accomplishments: “We’ve won a lot of regattas,” Bob said. He deemed the “most noteworthy” accomplishment a team effort in winning the total point trophy for seven years at the Southeast Regional Regatta in Aiken, S.C. The couple’s mixed double combination with the Kannapells won gold at last year’s Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga.

Goals: Kris – “To defend our gold at Head of the Hooch and row the marathon.” The Spenglers and Kannapells aim to win in Chattanooga and then go on to row a 26.2 mile race in Louisiana in Novem-

ber. Bob said they hope to complete the marathon in 3 hours, 15 minutes.

Thoughts on rowing and an active life: Bob – “Rowing is a great team sport. Because it is a team sport you become committed to it. It is a life long sport. There are people rowing with the club who are 80 years old.”

Kris – “Three generations of our family competes” in some kind of sport. Their youngest son recently completed an Ironman triathlon, a daughter-in-law does sprint triathlons, their oldest son plays tennis, and their oldest grandson just started playing soccer.

“We have a long line of competition,” Kris said.

Comments from Coach Jim Pickens: “Kris and Bob really helped as team captains (during the Richard Bunzl Night Sprints Regatta). They took over for me when I had other duties with the regatta,” he said. He described the Spenglers as long time LLRC members whose efforts have helped keep the club afloat and running strong. He also commended their endurance training for the upcoming marathon in Louisiana.

Meet the Lake Lanier Association Board of Directors This month, Lakeside on Lanier begins a regular column featuring news and information about the Lake Lanier Association. Here are brief biographies of each of the association’s board members.

Jackie Joseph, President – Jackie has lived in Buford since 1964 and on Lake Lanier since 1978. A lake advocate for many years, she has been a critical part of the development and ongoing operation of the LLA. Val Perry, Executive Vice President – Val is originally from Garden City, Long Island, and he and his wife Sharon have lived on Lanier for 22 years.

Gordon Brand, Vice President – Gordon and his wife Jeanette have lived on Lanier in Dawson County since 1989. Gordon is a

critical part of the Shore Sweep event in that county as well as other parts of the lake.

Paul Flood, Vice President – Paul is an Atlanta native and a Georgia Tech Alumnus. Paul is committed to the association’s mission of preserving the lake and the economic development of North Georgia.

Tech. In addition to being on the board he serves as Secretary and Board member for the 1071 Coalition and is a member of the Executive Committee of the new ACF Stakeholders group. He is also Executive Director and Board member of Scenic Georgia Inc. Roger Bauer, Secretary – A resident of Cumming, Roger has lived on Lanier with his wife Peggy since 1984.

Donna Baray, Director – Originally from Tennessee, Donna and her late husband Jaime moved to Lanier in 1991. Donna has been involved in planning both the association’s fishing and golf tournaments and has now increased her role to serving on the board.

Jim serves on the Lake Lanier Watershed Governance Council, the Statewide Water Planning Commission, and the Metropolitan North Georgia Overlay Basin Committee, and also on the Lake Lanier Basin Advisory Council of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District.

John Heard, Director – John was elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 2002 as the State Representative from District 104.

He served through 2008 and was Chairman of the House Appropriations Special Projects Committee.

Patsy Kilmartin, Director – Patsy attended law school at Georgia State University and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1991.

Patsy, along with her husband and daughter, moved to the Gainesville

area in 2001.

Tammy Levi, Director – Tammy has lived in Georgia most of her life and grew up boating and camping on Lanier.

Bev Nicholls, Director – Bev and her husband, Denny, have lived in the area for more than 12 years. She enjoys collecting the data with the Adopt-A-Lake group and sharing it with Gainesville College, Georgia Lakes Society, and other interested groups.

John Richardson, Director – John has a Management Consulting business. He has been a volunteer and member of the association for several years and has participated in the Shore Sweep activities and the Adopt-the-Lake program.

Charlie Rittenhouse, Director – Charlie Rittenhouse has served on the LLA board since 2000. His work has been primarily in the areas of water quality and water pollution control in Lake Lanier.

The Lake Lanier Association was founded in the early 1960s with a goal to protect and advocate for Lake Lanier. Membership is $50 for individuals and families.

Night Sprints spice up Taste of Gainesville

By Jane Harrison Lake Lanier Rowing Club junior athletes made a quick run to grab pizza, burritos and smoothies from restaurateurs serving their specialties on the Lanier Olympic Venue plaza Sept. 25. The teenagers said they needed the “health food” before gliding out under the lights for racing in the first night regatta staged on the Olympic course.

The night of dining and rowing brought out a crowd of hundreds, many of whom had made the annual Taste of Gainesville an early autumn tradition and many of whom had never seen rowers in action.

For the first time, LLRC presented the Richard Bunzl Night Sprints in combination with the Taste of Gainesville. It was an idea brought into fruition by LLRC Executive Director/Head Coach Jim Pickens after he watched a night sprint at the popular Oklahoma City regatta venue. He said he envisioned the dinner regatta as a good way to “show the community what we do. The audience can enjoy the races when they are done eating.”

After diners had stuffed themselves with marinated chicken thighs, clam chowder and baked pasta, and were picking at samples of carrot cake and banana pudding, the sleek racing boats appeared under the lights in front of the grandstands.

Folks catching their first glimpse of rowers’ unified strokes in long four- and eight-boats gasped and applauded as the boats slipped across the rippled black velvety water, studded with yellow buoys marking the lanes.

Teams from as far away as Orlando, Fl. and Winston-Salem, N.C. raced the 500-meter course illumined by generator-run flood lights. The 11-club line-up included crews from Clemson University, Berry College, Darlington School, South Orlando Rowing Association, Wake Forest University, University of Georgia, College of Charleston, Georgia State University, North Rowing (in Atlanta), Riverside Military Academy and LLRC. Prior to her race in the Junior Women’s 4 competition, LLRC junior Sloane Rodgers nibbled on a burrito and talked about the ex-

citement of a race after sundown.

“I’ve never rowed at night,” she said. The North Gwinnett High School senior and teammates Holly Shilling, from North Hall High School, and Olivia Varnson, from Mill Creek High School, wore flashing red lights on their caps and backs of their shirts so their fans in the grandstands could see them.

Despite a couple of boats veering off-course at the start, the regatta seemed to run smoothly.

Boaters rowing to the starting buoys paused briefly in front of the grandstands and then gave it their all for a few strokes in the spotlight to show off. Spectators and racers watched for the yellow light in the finish tower to turn green to signal the start of each race. Listeners could hear the coxswains yelling out encouragement to rowers pulling on the oars. An almost full moon rose over the channel as the finale neared.

The dinner featured specialties from about 25 area restaurants.

At the Just Desserts booth, Heather Choquette stood behind rows of tiny cake circles with dollops of icing. “They invited us back to defend our best dessert title,” said Choquette, co-owner of the Jefferson bakery.

Krystal Mullis, waiting in line at the El Maguey booth, said that although she lives nearby, she had never been to the annual culinary event. “I’ve always wanted to try it,” said Mullis, who brought a party of seven friends and family

members with her.

As diners finished eating and pulled chairs to the edge of the grandstands to see the water, LLRC President Ed Hallman told about the namesake of the night sprint regatta. Richard Bunzl, who died a few months ago, was not a rower, Hallman said, but he invested to preserve the Olympic legacy on Lake Lanier by helping purchase a fleet of power boats necessary to hold high level regattas. “The night sprints are dedicated in his memory,” Hallman said.

Successful Pet Fest draws 4,000 to Laurel Park

By Pamela A. Keene According to officials, the inaugural Lake Lanier Pet Fest was a howling success, bringing approximately 4,000 people to Laurel Park in Hall County on Saturday and Sunday, September 25-26.

They watched and participated in dog diving competitions, pet con-

tests and games, and enjoyed live music. Additionally, in the Hall County Animal Shelter adoption tent, 14 pets found new homes.

“That’s what Pet Fest is all about, finding homeless pets a family that will love and care for them,” said Marty Nix, Hall County public safety director. “All

proceeds from this festival will go to adoption programs at our shelter. We look forward to another great event next year.”

The Pet Fest was the first major fundraiser for the Hall County Animal Shelter. It is also the first time Lanier has seen the sport of dock diving, where dogs jump off a dock

into a pool of water and are judged on speed, height and distance.

“This was the best turnout we’ve ever had for a competition,” said Nancy Akin, Dixie Dock Dogs co-founder. “We had 225 dogs register to jump, and we usually have about 180. And the Dixie Dock Dogs signed up five new members as well. So we’re very, very excited about the enthusiasm people in the Lake Lanier area have shown for dock diving, and we hope to have more events like this in the future.”

The Hall County Animal Shelter is a division of Hall County Government’s Public Safety Department. The shelter, located at

1688 Barber Rd., is equipped to hold up to 90 dogs and 204 cats or puppies. Adoptions are $65, which includes spay/neuter, shots, deworming and combo test for cats.

A veterinarian is on staff to perform spay/neuter surgeries and any treatments necessary for the animals. This is a nonprofit shelter, and donations are welcome. Blankets, towels, dish towels, laundry detergent, cat litter, newspaper, and dry dog, puppy, cat and kitten food are needed.

October brings a refreshing ‘Ah!’ October is one of my favorite months of the year. We call it the “Goldilocks Month” because for the most part, temperatures are not too hot and not too cold.

There are exceptions of course, but for the most part, we generally run on an even keel.

October is also a fairly dry month. We average just over three inches on the north Georgia area. However, with La Nina really developing in the Pacific, drier than average weather can be expected.

In fact, many counties in our area are experiencing mild to moderate drought conditions this month. This is great news for the farming community, as it makes it easy to harvest crops.

However, with dry air in place, the underbrush is very susceptible to fire. We will likely see many high fire danger days this month, so camping enthusiasts need to use extra caution.

The Climate Prediction Center has issued its October outlook and predicts we will continue to drier than average conditions with temperatures at, or above the monthly average. This pattern will likely continue all through the winter months as well.

However, it seems the Old Farmer’s Almanac is disputing that! It is calling for a

wet and cold winter. We shall see whether technology outperforms Glenn folklore. My bet is on Burns the La Nina keeping us dry and warm.

Remember how dreary the fall color was last year? We had an immense amount of rain from late summer into the fall. That kind of weather makes the leaves dull. However, when we have dry weather, the fall color tends to be absolutely spectacular!

The fall color begins to get really good later this month, into early November.

There is nothing I enjoy more than hopping in the boat for a cruise on the lake with the trees ablaze in all their autumn glory. Wait for a day when high pressure builds over us, usually after a cool front.

When the skies are clear and cobalt blue, it makes a breath-taking background for the oranges, reds, and yellows.

I hope you enjoy one of the best weather months of the year and get a chance to savor our “Goldilocks Month.”

I will be back next time to update you on the predictions for this winter. And do remember, we are still in hurricane season, and the prime area for tropical development this month is in the Gulf of Mexico.

From expanding the courtesy docks twice to changing menu items and adding servers, the resort management has been responsive to customer concerns. “We’ve added new cooking equipment, expanded the cooking line and have added new bars away from the restaurant,” Williams said. Sunset Cove will roll out a new menu during October.

“Our goal is to continue to change things up to offer a fresh and unique experience for our guests,” marketing director Hallie Currigan said. “We’ve brought in televisions for the college and NFL sports fans to be able to enjoy their games here.”

Sunset Cove began as a beachside restaurant last spring, a gathering place for locals and guests of

the resort to enjoy a meal in a casual setting. The resort sold beach partnerships to locals to encourage loyalty and attendance; the memberships capped out but the guests continued to come, often several times a week because of the party atmosphere. Sunset Cove became the place to be and be seen, eclipsing the long-time popular Cocktail Cove.

“Cocktail Cove shifted to our cove,” Currigan said. “With our entertainment schedule and concerts people just continue to return again and again.”

The venue is the site of monthly full moon parties, plus concerts and special events. In addition, Singleton Marine Group hosted Wednesday night wakeboarding exhibitions June through August. The full moon parties will continue through the end of the year.

“We also expect to have a New Year’s party at Sunset Cove,” Williams said. The resort will likely do some modifications to the open-air restaurant for the winter months, although Williams did not elaborate on what type of winter hours the restaurant would main-

tain.

The mix of guests has been about 70 percent coming by boat and 30 percent coming by car, Currigan said.

Since the summer, the numbers have shifted a bit, with 35 percent coming by car and 65 percent by boat.

“It’s been a great summer and we’re already planning for the growth next year,” Williams said.

“Our biggest challenge has been keeping up with the growth, but it just goes to show that there is a big demand for people to come by boat to eat on the lake.”

Thousand Islands Region: That’s where I belong Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002.

My grandfather used to say to me, “you know we lost the War to those northern aggressors,” to which I would laugh to myself about the things which were forever etched in his mind. But for other like-minded individuals, we may have suffered another loss if the rumors circulating around New York are true.

I recently returned from a world-wind tour of the Great Lake regions of New York and Canada – what a beautiful part of the country. While in the area I was able to spend a few days with our boating friends Jim and Kathy Fenn, who live on Wellesley Island, just a stone’s throw from the Canadian border.

Lawrence River in an area that was previously being developed by the Methodists as a church camp. Much like the other island residents, they enjoy being on “the River,” far away from the hub-bub of Syracuse and Buffalo.

The water is crystal clear, and deep. And yes, it freezes over so much in the winter that they can drive across the border into Canada if it weren’t for the Border Patrol agents routinely patrolling the area.

The 1000 Islands Region takes its name from the more than one thousand islands along the shores of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. There’s an abundance of outdoor activities in which to partake, and with its proximity to major airports, the region has become an interna-

tional tourism destination.

Prior to an influx of resorts, lodges and chain hotels, the earliest tourism accommodations were privately owned cabins and cottages. Today, there are cabins and cottages of all shapes and sizes on all but the tiniest of islands. Many of the historically significant private residences remain as a reminder of the opulent lifestyle of some of New York’s most notable families. One major attraction is the Boldt Castle, named for the hotel magnate George C. Boldt.

Boldt was attributed with the introduction of Thousand Island salad dressing, based on a recipe given him by a Clayton, NY friend and hotelier.

Jackson So what has all this got to do with country music you might ask? Rumors have it that Alan Jackson, known for his blend of honky-tonk and mainstream country music, is considering buying a home in the Thousand Islands Region. According to his fan club website,

This month: Covering winterizing to whales and more That time has arrived: time to winterize your boat. The better job you do today will make it easier on you in the spring. One thing everyone now advises is to add stabilizer to your fuel tank.

Once you do that, run your engine long enough so it will be distributed through your fuel delivery system. Stabilizer manufacturers Star-Tron, Sta-Bil and ValvTech, recommend topping off your tank and adding their product to your fuel. Since your tanks are full it will take more of their product, which means more cost to you.

Manufacturers Mercury, Yamaha, and Evinrude recommend not filling the tank full.

Two reasons: one for expansion when the temperatures change, and two, if you have bad fuel next spring, you will have less to pump out when cleaning the tank.

Another reason for a low fuel tank is when spring comes you can fill with fresh fuel. I would also recommend adding the advised amount of Marvel Mystery Oil. It will ensure a clean fuel system for the season.

Here’s a list to help in winterizing: • Change oil and filter – impurities in old oil will cause rust and corrosion in engine. Do the same for your generator.

• Service outdrives and grease all fittings. Check for water in outdrive foot. If you find water, replace seal before serious damage occurs. Check prop. If damaged or needs hub replacement, send it off for repair now so it will be ready come spring.

• Head and holding tank – Empty holding tank and add proper treatment. Clean head and do same. Check hoses and

clamps.

• Water system – check hoses and clamps and add potable antifreeze.

• Check and properly store all electronics. If you have a VHF radio, fathometer or other electronics that need servicing, send them off now so they will be ready for spring launch. If the Captain feels he needs some new equipment, he might want to drop a hint to Santa.

• Inventory and check all required U.S.C.G. equipment onboard. Replace items in question and store properly.

• Check batteries and store properly with charger. Clean away any corrosion and apply protectant. If batteries need replacing, wait until spring and you will have a longer warranty.

• On outboards and outdrives, if you haven’t serviced the water pump in two years you need to now. Replace old impellers. This will eliminate down time next season.

• Check bilge pumps make sure bilge is clean and dry. The less moisture you have will keep mildew and odors down.

• Clean cabin and stow gear properly. Make sure you have no leaky hatches, ports, or windows.

• Wash, clean and wax exterior. Invite some of those folks who enjoyed your boat last sum-

mer to help on this job.

• If you keep your boat in the water and its due for hauling and bottom paint, schedule it for later in the fall. The yards are less busy and you might get a better deal.

• If you trailer your boat don’t forget service for it, too. Check wheel bearings and tires. Tires don’t usually wear, but they do get weather cracks in the sidewalls.

Each boat is different, and I’m sure I might have missed an item or two to check on, so check your owner’s manual and follow the instructions. West Marine has many products to help you winterize your boat, whether it’s on the interior or exterior. Remember, if you are a Boat U.S. member you will get a 10 percent discount. If you are not a Boat U.S. member you should be. It will be the best $24 you ever spent in boating.

Whale vs sailboat Ralph Mothes and Paloma Werner were on a leisurely afternoon sail on their Barens Seatrader sloop name “Intrepid” off Capetown, South Africa when they noticed Southern Right Whales, which can weigh up to 40 tons, breaching and diving about 400 yards astern. Mothes noticed that they were coming closer with each dive, but figured they would go under his boat.

Meanwhile a computer network administrator James Dagmore from Gaborone, Botswana was on a sightseeing cruise taking photos of the whales diving near the sailboat.

His “Kodak Moment” was a photo of a whale breaching immediately astern of the sailboat.

This naturally got their attention as they were able to move for-

fishing tournaments paying a bounty on each fish. This didn’t make a dent in the fish that can weigh up to 40 pounds or more.

American ingenuity took over and some businessmen realized the fish would be excellent feed for zoos. That worked out well and now commercial river fishermen have an outlet for their catch.

Meanwhile other businessmen realized this fish is a prize catch in China, and yes we are exporting them back to China by the ton.

Restaurateurs stateside decided that since carp were a delicacy in China and other Asian countries maybe they should offer it on their menu. A new industry was started: gourmet carp. Recipes like Vietnamese carp cooked in coconut milk, breaded fried carp filets, carp soup with lemon and spinach, and of course the old favorite, smoked carp. Maybe you might want to serve carp at your next “soiree.”

If you catch or buy them, keep fish 10 pounds or smaller. If you don’t want to fool with catching and cleaning them, contact these businesses and they will ship them to you: Valley Fish and Cheese, Prairie Du Chin, Wisconsin – 608-326-4719; Schafer Fisheries, Pepin, Wisconsin, 1800-291-3474. Who knows you might like it and you will be reducing the Asian carp population which has been a serious problem for the U.S. river systems.

Practice safe boating. Be courteous and I’ll see you on the water or beach depending on the weather.

After spending two weeks in the area it is not hard to understand why he would find the Thousand Islands appealing, but for those of us on Lake Lanier there are some drawbacks. The boating season is short, the winter temperatures can be depressing and from the Fenn’s cabin it

The occupants were OK but shaken. They were able to motor back to Capetown Harbor. They were fortunate that it was a steel hulled sailboat. If it was wood or fiberglass it would have splintered or shattered.

Dagmore was taking photos while all this happened, and they were sensational. Some so good he was accused of trick photos which were disproved and “The Today Show” did a feature on the incident. They certainly will have a sea tale to tell that tops most.

Coast Guard report Boat fatalities rose in 2009, the Coast Guard’s Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety reports. They reported 736 fatalities and 3,358 injuries and approximately $36 million in property damage from 4730 recreational boating accidents in 2009. Gourmet carp Episodes of people encountering Asian Carp, which are growing rampant in our rivers, especially the Missouri, Mississippi, and Illinois and their tributaries, have appeared in this column many times. The fish prefer to invade the cruising zone of PWC drivers and many have been injured. These rapidly multiplying fish were a problem. They even thought about closing access to Lake Michigan so they wouldn’t upset the balance of fishing in the Great Lakes. Local clubs held

I want to sleep on one of

those beds on the screen porch at the Fenn’s cabin and feel the fresh breeze as it blows across the river from Canada. I want to enjoy the reflections on the water at sunrise, and sit around a camp fire to watch the sun go down. And when I do return, I will be listening out through the stillness of the evening hoping to hear someone singing one of my favorite country songs, It’s Five O’clock Somewhere.

Oceans Paradise Seafood opens on McEver Road in the former Lakehouse Restaurant location

By Pamela A. Keene Fresh steamed seafood is the specialty at Oceans Paradise Seafood on McEver Road at Jim Crow Road. It’s a family business built on 22 years of restaurant expertise.

Co-owners Robin Kwan and Victoria Han moved from New Jersey and a successful business there to open Oceans Seafood in the former location of the Lakehouse Restaurant.

“My mom (Han) had C&H Crabhouse Seafood restaurant in Newark and it was very successful,” said Shayna Cho, who manages Oceans Paradise. “We had friends here and looked at this location five years ago for a restaurant. My mother moved here last November and I came here in May. Our goal is to run a good restaurant here. We sold the New Jersey restaurant to my uncle when we left.”

Oceans Paradise has a completely new menu specializing in steamed, fried and grilled seafood, plus meat, pasta and vegetarian meals. It also has a wide selection of side items, including shrimp fried rice, broccoli, mushrooms, fries and onion rings.

The restaurant’s secret is its specially designed seafood steamer. “There’s nothing like it anywhere around here,” Cho said. “It keeps the juices in and the food tastes really good.”

Full Moon Suspension Bridge Hike worth the trip

By Jane Harrison The bridge over Hurricane Falls gently swayed as the celestial celebrity peeked over darkened ridges. First, shyly shimmering behind early autumn leaves and then rising in bold glory, the Harvest Moon ascended in front of her audience of 50 hikers clustered on the suspension bridge 80 feet above Tallulah Gorge.

“That’s as cool as heck,” one hiker softly exclaimed, as others whispered their observations in the full moon’s glow. The entourage had just completed a 500-stair descent in darkness for the Sept. 25 Full Moon Suspension Bridge Hike at Tallulah Gorge State Park.

Interpretive Ranger West Malenke led the expedition, a monthly event that usually attracts at least 40 participants for two hours of night hiking and moon viewing.

Malenke, who has been leading the suspension bridge hike for three years, has ushered spectators to view the Worm Moon (March), Strawberry Moon (June), Wolf Moon (January) and all the other full moons the Native Americans bestowed with distinctive names.

“Each one is spectacular,”

Malenke said. The natural effects in the gorge – the splashing of Hurricane Falls under the bridge and moon shadows of hikers on the forest behind them – create a unique setting for the nocturnal show. The position of the moon relative to the bridge each month sets a different stage. Malenke said one full moon in summer illumines a platform above the span and shines on the falls below.

Before the September hike, participants gathered in the twilight in front of the park’s interpretive center as the season’s last katydids chirped an overture for the walk into the gorge. Just after Malenke announced he would wait five minutes for some late arrivals, a car pulled up and a passenger shouted, “We’re here!” The late comers had traveled more than six hours from Valdosta for a moonlit prelude to a North Georgia weekend.

Elementary school aged children, senior citizens, and handholding couples followed Malenke on a forest trail and rubberized path to the metal grate stairs that lead into the gorge. Some carried flashlights or wore head lights.

ition and careful steps. Not a single spectator had backed out after Malenke forewarned them about the 1,000 stairs they would negotiate that night. The plod of sturdy shoes down the steps to the bridge halted at intermittent platforms where participants rested briefly and stared down at barely visible froths of waterfalls rushing through the gorge.

The entourage reached the suspension bridge at about 8:45 and trekked past it to a platform where Malenke gave out colored squares of construction paper. He asked each participant to guess the color of their paper, which was obscured by darkness. He said normally about half the crowd can guess correctly. A volunteer counted the guesses as she shone a flashlight on each square to see its color.

Sure enough, half had seen the true color.

After that diversion, the stage was nearly set for the main event.

Malenke got the group back to the bridge just before nine. The night walkers, chatty in their pre-show parade, now quieted in near-reverence for the moon’s appearance. At 9:03, she rose into clear dark skies,

Lanier Striper Club’s virtual fishing tournament raises money for charities

By Pamela A. Keene Funfest, sponsored by the Lake Lanier Striper Club, raised funds for five Lake Lanier charities in September.

The event, which sold out several weeks early, featured 60 boats and 240 anglers who fished catch-and-release, recording the length of their catches on cell phone cameras and transmitting the results to the amphitheater at Lake Lanier Islands.

“We had many sponsors actually come out and fish the tournament,” said Dan Saknini with the club. “The Top 15 teams walked away with trophies and prize money, plus we were able to donate to five charities on the lake.”

Doug Youngblood and his team won the tournament with a

cumulative total of 70.5 inches.

The benefactors of the event included the US Army Corps of Engineers Catfish Pond, Seed Outing by GON Magazine, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Get Kids Fishing and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Fish Biologists in Gainesville.

Presenting sponsors included AT&T, Samsung, ZTE and Pantech. Huawei was the hosting sponsor. Other sponsors were Nokia, LG, Motorola, Palm, Sony Ericsson, BlackBerry and HTC. “The event is catching momentum and we’re looking forward to next year,” Saknini said.

“The money that we’re raising is going back to Lake Lanier and striper fishing on the lake.”

By Pamela A. Keene Nearly 30 boats competed in the 11th annual Special Olympics Open Sailing Regatta, Sail for Champions, in mid-September at Sunrise Cove Marina.

“We are so close to our goal of $19,220, in fact just a few hundred dollars shy of this amount, that

we’re still accepting donations,” said Allison H. Kaczenski, director of special events for Special Olympics Georgia. “We had a great time both on the water and off.”

BoatUS urges boaters to speak up on ethanol Decision from federal agency expected to announce decision soon

Keene By the middle of October, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to announce its decision on whether to approve the addition of up to 50 percent more ethanol in the nation’s gasoline supply. For boaters this could mean that the gasoline they use in their boats could be harmful to their motors and engines.

BoatUS, the nation’s largest boat owners group, is requesting that recreational voters make their voices heard on this matter by writing to President Obama to urge the completion of scientific testing before the decision is made by the EPD. The proposal is to add 50 percent more ethanol to gasoline across the board, used in vehicles and marine vessels, and industry experts suggest that this could mean compromised performance of marine engines. “We already know that 10 percent ethanol fuel is harmful to marine engines,” said Margaret Podlich, BoatUS vice president of government affairs. “Last year, a record number of recreational boaters asked the EPA to test marine engines before allowing up to 15 percent (E15) ethanol in gasoline. While this testing has not been completed, we believe the EPA is getting ready to announce their decision on increased ethanol in the next couple of weeks. We expect the agency will allow E15 for some engines and not others. In addition to the lack of scientific testing data, we suspect this will create different fuels with dif-

ferent prices, availability and add consumer confusion.

“Many boaters, having suffered through the last ethanol transition to E10, agree that we should learn from recent history and first completely understand what the new fuel will do before approving its use in boats,” added Podlich. “It may turn out to be harmless, but what if it's not? What happens if safety is affected or boaters are forced to pay for expensive repairs? Remember that most boat engine warranties are void when using ethanol beyond the 10 percent level.”

Alex Laidlaw with Westrec Marinas, which owns Holiday and Sunrise Cove, agreed. “It’s bad for safety because ethanol burns hot and can damage plastic and rubber, it’s bad for boaters’ wallets because using it can result in costly repairs and it’s bad for the environment,” he said. “There’s clearly consumer confusion already as well.

Atlanta Marine opens sales facility at Hideaway Bay Marina, offers in-the-water showroom

By Pamela A. Keene Atlanta Marine has expanded to the recently renovated Hideaway Bay Marina.

It’s the first time the dealer has had an indoor showroom. The 4,100-square-foot facility is augmented with in-the-water slips.

“It’s fantastic and we’re looking forward to having this new facility,” said Kurt Backus, owner of Atlanta Marine. The company currently has two sales locations across from each other on Holiday Road.

The company has sold Supra and Moomba wakeboard/water-ski boats since it began in 1995. The company also represents Everglades offshore fishing boats, which make great striper boats for Lanier.

Monterey cruisers and sport boats from 18 to 40 feet are also available.

“We’re displaying the 40-foot flagship

model, the Monterey 400, in the water at Hideaway Bay,” Backus said. “It’s a 2-bedroom, 2-bath diesel and IPS joystick steering and it’s a beauty.”

The company has added two pontoon boat lines to its offerings – Playcraft and Hampton. It is also now sponsoring striper guide Mike Jones, who has an Everglades 243. “Jones will be at the company’s Atlanta Boat Show display and we’re glad to have him as part of the Atlanta Marine family,” Backus said.

Backus said that now that the lake is up, so are sales. The move to Hideaway Bay is part of the company’s expansion strategy.

“We decided to move there for two reasons, one, all the major renovations they’ve done at the marina and two, the draw of the popular Fish Tales restaurant.”

Bugs and the daughters that are frightened by them It usually all starts with a series of blood curdling screams, followed by the sound of pounding feet desperately seeking escape, and ends up with a hysterical plea to be saved from an instantaneous and horrid death: “Dad, there’s a bug in my bedroom!” It always makes me feel sorry for the bug.

Actually, it was kind of cute when my daughters were bugsized themselves. It allowed me to assume the role of Sir Lancelot, sans the geeky bowl haircut, stepping up to slay the offending insect.

“There you go, the bug’s all gone. Let’s go to bed now, daddy has to finish watching an important football game.”

“But, I’m afraid the bug will come back.”

Aquamarina Lazy Days expands docks, adds Marine Max Aquamarina Lazy Days has expanded its dockage configuration to include a new covered cruiser dock with extra-large slips and more amenities. Additionally, Marine Max has come to the marina with an in-thewater showroom. The company will have 15 slips to display boats from 21-foot Nautiques to a Sea-Ray 58-foot yacht.

“The addition of our new cruiser dock and the reconfiguration of the marina are both part of our long-range master plan,” said Andrew Sturner, founder, president and CEO of Aqua Marine Partners, which owns and manages Aquamarina Lazy Days. “We are also incredibly pleased to have Marine Max become part of the Aquamarina Lazy Days family as one of two exclusive boat dealers on the property.”

The new dock has been named Pier 11 and features 12 60-foot covered slips, plus two side ties. The slips measure 16 feet by 50 feet and can accommodate the lake’s largest cruisers. Every slip on the new dock has its own dock box and assigned parking place.

The new docks are built of concrete, including the marina’s courtesy dock area, making it the only marina on the lake with all-concrete floating docks. “Lake Lanier is a stunning place and our marina is a proud to offer a wonderful family experience. As a result, we are seeing good response to our marina’s improvements,” Sturner said. “We only have a few slips still available but they are filling up fast as people want to have their boats located at this end of the lake.”

Marine Max’s in-the-water sales slips are located on Pier 11.

The company specializes in SeaRay, Boston Whaler, Azimut Italian luxury yachts from 45 to 120

feet long and Meridian Yachts. It added Nautique about six weeks ago. “It really is great to see these boats in the water and be able to do demos,” said John Gaffney, general manager of Marine Max. “They’re also easier to access and show from the docks.”

He praised the new facilities at Aquamarina Lazy Days. “It’s an amazing facility and it’s so easy to get in and out of the marina for our demos.”

Aquamarina Lazy Days is a full-service marina with a combination of in-the-water dockage, year-round “in and out” drystack storage and trailer storage.

All wet slips are located in a private gated section of the marina.
