Sailors enjoyed good wind and nice weather during September's Special Olympics Georgia Open Regatta on Lake Lanier. The event, hosted by Southern Sailing Club and based out of Sunrise Cove Marina, raised approximately $27,000 in support of more than 25,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Georgia. Lake Lanier angler surprised by his record catch is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene Contributing writers Phillip Sartain, Roy Crittenden, Tommy Wilkinson, Millie Adcox, Mike Rudderham, Glenn Burns, Bob & Carolyn Wilson, Lisa Beers, Jane Harrison Steve Johnson

By Pamela A. Keene At first all fisherman Gerald Kennedy knew was that he’d snagged a big fish. With his Penn Combo equipped with 20-pound line he started reeling in his catch, but the first time the fish broke the surface of the water, Kennedy was in for a shock. The fish fighting at the end of the line was a 30-plus pound gar with a pointed snout and razor sharp teeth. “I’m from south Florida and I grew up fishing from almost the time I was born, so I know what a gar looks like,” he said. “Down

there in Florida, the Seminole Indians used to just cut ‘em open, take out their innards and lay ‘em on the fire. They didn’t even scale ‘em. Then they’d eat ‘em.” Kennedy unhooked the fish and called his wife, who checked the internet and found that the record for a gar caught on Lanier was 30 pounds. So he decided to take the fish to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Game Division on Ga. 53 to see if he had a record-beater. Officials there took the fish’s official weight – 30 pounds and 13 ounces – and measured it – 58

and three quarter inches long, and verified that Kennedy had broken a record for Lanier for catching gars. Kennedy fishes nearly every day that the weather allows. He lives in Murrayville, where the former welder moved in 1982. “It takes me about 15 to 20 minutes to hook up my boat and get to the lake to fish,” he said. He said the

biggest striper he’s ever caught at Lanier weighed in at 20 pounds. Kennedy said he thought about getting the big fish mounted as a trophy, “but it would have cost too much,” he said. “I was just going to throw it away.” Instead, he left it with the DNR Game Division. “They just put in their freezer and I don’t know from there what they did with it.”

Last chance this year to take a USCGA Safe Boating Course The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering its last safe boating course of the year on October 12. Why not enroll now and join the over 200 Lake Lanier recreational boaters who have completed our courses this year. See the announcement and procedure to follow for enrollment elsewhere on this page. This month’s column is about Life Jackets. BORING! Besides, you know everything there is to know about them, right? Let’s find out. Take this quiz, then we’ll talk. Answer the following, true or false: • Most boating fatalities occur at sea. • Most boating fatalities happen to women, minorities, and children under 18. • Most boating fatalities occur in bad weather. • Most boating fatalities are from bodily injuries, due to a collision. • Most boating fatalities happen to inexperienced boaters. • The law only requires that you have one life jacket per person on board. • It is OK to put a child in an adult life jacket but not vice

versa. • Most all boat-related drownings occur because there weren’t enough life jackets on board. • The law views an inflatable life jacket the same as a regular life jacket. • A floatable seat cushion counts as a life jacket. Most boating fatalities happen to white males, ages 18-34, with boating experience. They occur on lakes, streams, and inland waters more than the ocean, and in boats under 16 feet, in calm seas and good weather. Seventy percent of all boating fatalities are from drowning, and in 90 percent of the fatalities, the victim was not wearing a life jacket.

Drownings are most likely to occur when a person enters the water unexpectedly from a boat capsizing or from a fall. When this happens, there is no time to grab a life jacket and the trauma of such an event creates sufficient shock and disorientation to prevent even good swimmers from saving themselves. The law requires that each individual on board have a properly sized and fitted Coast Guard approved life jacket (other than Type IV) that is in good condition. Boats 16 feet or larger also must carry a throwable (Type IV) floatation device (such as a cushion or ring). Life jackets are generally labeled as “infant,” “child,” “youth,” or “adult,” but more importantly show the weight range of the person they were designed to support (e.g. less than 30 pounds, 30-50, less than 90, etc.). It is more important that the jacket fit and match the weight range, rather than the age range. It is also vital that a child is securely fitted in a jacket that they can not slip out of. Life jackets now come in a wide variety of styles, colors, and types. These include life jackets,

vests, coats, deck suits, and inflatables. The Coast Guard designates them by type (I, II, III, IV, and V) according to their style and buoyancy. Briefly summarized: Type I is for off-shore, providing more buoyancy and support for the head; Type II is for inshore boating; Type III is for calm water conditions, but unlike I & II, will not turn an unconscious person’s face out of the water; Type IV is a throwable de-

vice; and Type V is a special use device, such as a floatation coat, work vest, or deck suit. Which is best? The one that is designed for your conditions and is comfortable enough for you to wear while onboard! A life jacket on board doesn’t do you any good, when you are in the water. The law states that life jackets must be readily available (not in plastic or stowed under other See USCGA, page 12

Time to try fly fishing … it’s easier than you think Another summer has come and gone. It won’t be long before shallow water offers some productive fishing opportunities. If you’re looking for a change of pace this fall, consider picking up a fly rod. If you’re new to this pastime, it’s really not difficult to get a good handle on the basic skills that will connect you to many species of fish on what feels like a more personal level. If you own fly casting tackle but have not used it in a while, it’s time to wipe the dust off and tie on a new leader. For those who are just getting started, quality tackle can be purchased at reasonable prices. While some rod and reel combinations could set you back a thousand dollars or so, a well matched rod, reel, and line can be purchased for about the same price you would pay for a decent bass fishing combo. A smart shopper can get in the game somewhere in the range of $100 to $150. Check out some prices and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. The fly line provides weight that loads the rod for casting. Fly rods are rated for different line weights. This has nothing to do with strength or pound test ratings you consider

The smaller ing tackle, the conditions you fish bass in the mix provided an extra and species you pursue dictate the measure of excitement. Needless rod, reel, and line choice. For to say, I was hooked. If you live panfish and trout, a four or five near a public park with a lake or weight outfit is great. If you’re have access to a subdivision lake tossing lots of streamers or stepin your neighborhood fast action

could be much closer than you think. These bodies of water tend to be very shoreline accessible. Early and late target the shallows with casts close to the shoreline. These areas are often sparse in the way of cover so when you do spot something in the water, such as grass, willow branches from shoreline trees, or stick ups, be sure to drop a couple of casts near the target. A handful of torn up bread tossed into the water at a public park will often bring in bluegill for an instant feeding frenzy. Make sure the area is clear of ducks and geese before trying this tactic for best results. If you’re getting kids started in fly fishing this is a great ploy for fast action. When you visit the local tackle shop ask to see the selection of popping bugs. The smallest models will provide the most hook ups. Colors vary; just choose what you like and it should work fine. You’ll want to pick up a few foam spiders as well. These are deadly on panfish. Fish bugs, poppers and spiders with very subtle twitches by pulling a few inches of line with your non rod hand. This causes the limber rubber legs to move in a lifelike manner.

Try baitfish imitations Even when the fish are holding in deeper water, a fly rod can be an effective tool. From May until the end of October, it’s pretty common to encounter surface feeding schools of bass early and late in the day. Earlier in the year and in late October through the winter, stripers also chase baitfish on the surface resulting in fishing that’s described as truly exciting to say the least. Consider this. Instead of casting your favorite surface plug into this action try a fly designed to imitate a fleeing baitfish. A number of streamers such as Clouser Minnows, the Cowen Baitfish, and Gummy Minnows will all elicit strikes from schooling bass or linesides. Take along a fly rod to supplement the conventional tackle. Casting a fly can be very effective when you encounter surface schooling action that occurs on many mornings and evenings. As always, focus your efforts on points and submerged humps. Also remember that it never hurts to blind cast over the right structure whether you’re using a fly or a topwater plug. While most situations call for a floating line, opt for a heavy See Fishing, page 11

Lanier Fishing Report

Continued from Page 10 full sinking version if you’re fishing for bass and linesides in open water. These cast like a rocket and give the option of different depth zones depending on how long you count them down. Bass and striper anglers often complain that the quarry is feeding on small baitfish making them difficult to catch. A fly rod angler can easily overcome this with the many small streamer choices that imitate both small shad and herring. It’s worth noting that many of today’s heavy sinking lines can bring streamers down to the 15 or 20 foot level. Some of these high tech lines use tungsten which is heavier yet much more compact than lead. Open water bass and striper fishing is best suited for sinking lines. Anglers can also ply the shallows for bass with floating lines. There’s certainly no shortage of flooded cover back in the coves. Many bass will hold in these areas for much of the year. These areas offer huge potential for the fly fisherman. Target these fish with larger poppers, hair bugs, and flies that imitate crayfish. Don’t forget the trout Thus far, I’ve focused on our warm water opportunities. If you start using a fly rod, you’ll probably end up targeting trout as well. Great fishing for our cold water species abounds in mountain streams and

two tailrace areas. I will tell you that our tailrace fisheries on the Chattahoochee and Toccoa rivers are nothing short of fantastic. They are tributes to what the DNR does for anglers. These are big waters with lots of space and casting room. While dry flies will elicit strikes, bead head type nymphs (which sink deeper) are tops for action. Patterns like the bead head hare’s ear, pheasant tail, and prince in sizes 16 to 18 should be well stocked in your fly box at all times. If you’re fishing these, you’ll need a strike indicator. Choose one that easily adjusts to different depths. My favorite option is to rig one of these as a dropper below a bushy floating fly such as a stimulator. Sometimes trout will pounce on the dry fly itself. If you opt for smaller mountain streams, stick with dry flies. I’ve nearly come to the conclusion that a good foam ant imitation is all you need most of the time. Pick those that have high-visibility indicators in some form so you can see them while floating over strike zones. Green inch worm and beetle patterns also work well, especially after warm weather thunderstorms. If you’re on the stream near dusk in the warmer months, magical things start to happen. Winged insects such as various mayfly, stonefly, and caddis flies, hatch out or become generally See Fishing, page 12

Elevation: 1071.5 or about half a foot above full pool. Surface Temp: Upper 70s Clarity: Normal. Clear in main lake areas with some color in upper tributaries. Bass fishing has been good to very good. Spotted bass are very active over deep water structures. You’ll want to target points and humps near the creek mouths. Those with submerged brush piles in at least 25 feet of water are the best targets. Larger swim baits that mimic shad and herring have been top producers. Cast these for a retrieve over the deep cover and retrieve slowly over the strike zone. A Lanier favorite, the Fish Head Spin has also been accounting for a lot of action. The 3/8th ounce size is an all round good choice paired with a Super Fluke Junior (pearl or albino) by Zoom Bait Company. Slow roll this at varying depths to target suspended fish. If these are not working, the fish may be holding tight to brush. Drop shot rigs and rubber skirted jigs presented close to and in the cover can be a great go to. I nearly forgot to mention the topwater bite. It’s been good. Look for schoolers with a rod rigged and ready each morning or evening. It can also pay to work a larger stick bait or chugger over the brush piles before you move in with plastics. Look for a combination of shallow and deep patterns to come in play soon. Striper fishing has been very good. Creek mouths, especially on the lower end have been places of action. Some anglers are experiencing surface schooling activity already. Be on the water early for this. Run and gun the points with seven inch Redfins and Super Spooks. If you don’t hit on linesides, you’ll probably have to settle for some magnum spotted bass instead. It’s all good. Live herring on down rods have been hot for big numbers of fish. Drop baits down to 25 to 30 feet over bottom depths of at least 50 feet over points and humps. If you’re not spotting schools of gamefish on your electronics, in 20 to 30 minutes, move on. The trolling bite has finally kicked in strong as well. How long it will last is anyone’s guess. A great staple for this method is a one ounce bucktail jig on a 20foot leader trolled behind eight to nine colors of lead core line. Look for the topwater bite to get stronger in October.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Annual Dragon Boat Festival draws thousands to LLOV By Jane Harrison Southern hospitality and Asian culture merged beautifully in the 18th annual Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival Sept. 14 at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. A sparkling pre-Autumn day brought thousands of dragon boaters and spectators to watch the long boats race, eat egg rolls and barbecue, and see dancers twirl to Far Eastern music. More than 60 teams from local and Atlanta area corporations, schools and clubs paddled down the Olympic course in 39-foot boats bearing fiberglass dragon heads and tails. The colorful celebration of cultural diversity is

an annual collaboration between the Atlanta Hong Kong Information Center and Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. The Hong Kong center registers teams, entertainers and food venders; LCKC takes charge of the competition. The action on the water reflects the ancient Chinese racing tradition, while the bustle in the grandstands showcases the lake area’s diversity. Festival goers downed Southern fried pork skins, washed them down with sugar cane juice, and dipped spoons into fruit-topped Suno ice-cream. Gainesville Hall ’96 submits draft of service contract By Jane Harrison Gainesville Hall ’96 has submitted the first draft of a service contract to the city and county outlining the organization’s goals and business plan for the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. GH ’96 Board Chairperson Mimi Collins presented the contract to board members meeting at the Olympic Venue tower Sept. 20. The document, which Collins said would likely be revised upon review by city and county managers, is a prerequisite for the release of $300,000 budgeted by both governments for upgrades at the site of 1996 Olympic flatwater canoe/kayak and rowing events. Collins expressed hope that the final draft will be approved within weeks and funding available by November. The proposed contract states GH ’96 goals to attract and assist with regattas and special events, encourage community support, and market the venue through local tourism agencies. It also sets up financial arrangements, including a quarterly payment plan for county and city funds. Each government pledged to provide $150,000 for the venue in their 2014 fiscal year budget. The money is expected to help pay for physical improvements to the buildings and docks and go toward hiring a venue manager. Collins reported that the manager position has attracted “a lot of interest.” She and board members Stacey Dickson, Phil Sutton, Kevin Sietz, and Ruth Bruner agreed to interview candidates for the job. The manager would serve as an event coordinator and liaison between the rowing and canoe/kayak club, local governments and other entities. Additionally, the manager would publicly advocate for the venue and raise funds. The job description is a “living document,” that can change as ideas and needs evolve, Collins said. Board members discussed researching other flatwater venues to find out about salary and benefits they provide to their managers. The board’s search for a manager will be posted on a Gainesville Hall ’96 website being formatted by Dickson. The proposed home page features photographs of rowers and Olympian Tim Hornsby, who started paddling with the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club after the 1996 Olympics. It would also spotlight other outstanding athletes, she said, as well as a link to Vision 2030, a Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce initiative that has included support of the venue among its priorities. Several board members expressed concern about the potential painting of a mural on the Olympic

tower or elsewhere at the venue. Meg Nivens read an email from GH ’96 advisor Jim Mathis that described a potential grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts for public art. The $4,000 state grant already acquired a $2,000 local match, according to Mathis, and would pay for a mural painting and professional “flash mob” dance program at its unveiling, which would be this month. “The tower is iconic, I’m not sure we want to” compromise that, Bruner said. The red and white tower emblazed with images of a rower and paddler “represent the place,” said John Ferriss. Mike Banks questioned what genre of art would be on display. Jonathan Collins asked whether the board would have control of the theme. Dickson said the mural might show the venue is changing and “would get more people out here.” She joked that a Salvador Dali style mural, if painted, would indeed attract attention. It was unknown how long the mural would stay up. Board members agreed to make a formal request for about $10,000 held in the Lanier Canoe 2003 account in the aftermath of the international flatwater paddling regatta at the venue that year. The board also has access to another $10,000 in a GH ’96 account. Ferriss reported that the capital needs assessment committee is preparing a list of improvements needed at the venue. He said Lake Lanier Rowing Club presented a list to the city council three years ago that outlined improvements totaling $2 million. He suggested improvements could be divided into tiers, designating money for various projects such as boathouse improvements, equipment and grounds. The board’s next meeting is scheduled Oct. 18.

Taste of Gainesville canceled The annual Taste of Gainesville has been canceled this year. Lake Lanier Rowing Club President John Ferriss announced that the club board of directors decided to cancel the event scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. “Several reasons contributed to this decision, including the absence of many club members/ volunteers and the desire of the board to ensure success for the event. We want to make sure the restaurants that graciously agreed to participate have a good experience,” Ferriss said in his regular e-newsletter. He added, “We will look to reboot the event in 2014 with input from the club.”

The line at the window showed the cross-cultural appeal of the smoky Southern favorite. The athleticism of entertainers in the midday opening ceremony rivaled that of racers on the lake. Two teams of dancers from the Hong Kong School of Kung Fu in Atlanta pranced underneath glittering pelts portraying double dragons in the traditional opening dance. Taiwanese Mountain Dancers skipped on hands and feet over bamboo stalks beat rhythmically on the award circle concrete. Indian dancers swayed gracefully in a traditional ceremonial dance and youngsters from the Georgia Dance Academy in Duluth hopped in their “papaya salad” routine. Percussionists in the Taiwanese Drum School pounded the finale before after-

noon racing began. A second entertainment stage, set up just outside the plaza gate, featured more song and dance. Employees from at least one local business were among those paddling it out on the course. The ZF Industries crew from Gainesville won their morning heats, upsetting teams from Home Depot and UPS. ZF captain David Haack, who is also LCKC President, said he had no trouble putting paddles into co-workers’ hands. The 22-person vessel “filled up so quick I could have filled up two boats,” Haack said. He added the competition is “an excellent chance to team build and get to know each other outside of work.” Few local businesses have entered teams in the near two decade history of the event. Haack remarked that “all you have to do is ask.” UPS brought enough paddlers to fill two boats, plus family and support staff, totaling about 100.

Team captain Allen Lo said crew members journeyed to Lake Lanier several weekends to practice. “We have a devoted, spirited group,” he said. Announcer Morgan House reported that a morning breeze helped flip one boat whose occupants were rescued by volunteers in motor boats. “It was a nice day to go swimming,” said House, of the sunny, 80-degree weather. The event represents the “trade, investment and cultural ties between Georgia and Hong Kong,” said Anita Chan, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York. “We’re proud to bring a piece of the culture of Hong Kong” to Lake Lanier, she added. Gainesville council members Bob Hamrick and Ruth Bruner also attended.

Time to start thinking about winterizing your boat It’s almost time for winterizing your boat. Due to the weather this past summer most boaters did not get to use their boats as much as they would like. This does not mean they don’t have to get their boat ready for storage so it will be ready for next season without any major or costly problems. Many of you enjoy fall week-end outings, and a trip or two to view the fall colors. Then the temperatures will fall and football will be on your minds. So make your list. If you have an outboard or I/O, check your gear case. If you have water in it, your propeller shaft seal will need replacing. If you don’t check it and water remains in it you could have costly repairs replacing a cracked gear case due to freezing. An I/O needs to have the boot checked for deterioration and weather cracks. Replace if needed. Both outboards and I/Os should have all crease points checked. If your water pump impeller is over two years old it may be time to replace. If the propeller needs servicing, do it now, and also don’t forget the hubs. They also might need replacing. Change the oil and filter. Old oil will cause corrosion over time. Some like to do a tune-up in the fall, others like to wait for spring. If it’s going to be a large job with a carburetor overhaul I would do it now and you won’t have to bother with it come spring. Make sure your holding tanks are empty and your water tanks and line are drained or add potable anti-freeze in the tanks. Clean fuel line water separators and filters and add proper fuel additive to the tank. This is a must with today’s fuel. If you don’t treat your fuel you could have problems next spring. There are many brands on the market. If in doubt have your mechanic recommend one. Don’t forget your boat trailer. I call it the most neglected piece of boating equipment. Check rollers, beds, winch and line, lights, tires and bearings. Remember one of the worst days in boating is when you are stuck on the side of the road with trailer problems. Inboard and v-drive boats need transmissions checked, shaft logs, rudder posts, closed cooling systems, as well as the afore mentioned items which apply to them. If you keep your boat in the water year round, schedule a hauling and get the hull and running gear pressured washed, inspected and repaired if needed. All boats need to check zincs and

Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments

replace where needed. If you have abnormal zinc wear investigate and correct. Electrolysis can be costly. Replace or repair non-working electronics now so they will be ready by spring. If you are going to replace, then watch for fall or spring sales. Sailboats: do the same to your auxiliary, fuel and water tanks and holding tank. Make sure you air out your sails before stowing, it will prevent mildew. All boats need a thorough cleaning. Include bilges, plus the interior and exterior. If you have a boat with a cabin, make sure you remove anything that will attract critters that may make your boat their winter home. If you feel you have missed anything, check your owner’s manual or speak with your mechanic. This should help you to be ready for next spring with a minimum of get ready work. Remember, if you have items your boat might need next year or its captain might want, put it on your Christmas list and if you have been good maybe Santa will leave it under the Christmas tree. Remember it’s good practice to write down what you did to winterize and attach it to the helm, then whoever gets the boat ready for next season will have a guide to go by which will make it easier and you won’t miss anything. I once did a survey on an 80’ houseboat with a pair of outdrives and generator. The owner bought it in Kentucky in the winter and trucked it down to Lake Lanier. He was told it was ready to go. So we put it in the water and while the engines were idling all three bilge pumps came on. All the block drain plugs were out. Once everything was corrected we had a successful sea trial. This is why the information needs to be attached to the helm so it will be noticed. Doing things properly will assure that next season should be trouble free. On inboard boats remember to drain the block. If you have a closed cooling system check your owner’s manual. While winterizing check all hoses, clamps and wiring that might cause problems

and replace or repair. Remember any repair you do, enter into your maintenance log. New boats you’ll see at the show 2014 will bring more outboard powered cruisers in the 30’ to 40’ length. This enables builders to use the space once occupied by the engine room for creature comforts. These areas, be it below deck or helm and cockpit areas, are now referred to as “social zones.” Also with the power being outboards there is maximum deck space for relaxing or entertaining. Searay leads the way in this new concept, but several wellknown builders, Pursuit being one, and are about to introduce their own models. A new watersport? After watching the catamarans on hydro-foils compete at over 40 knots I couldn’t help but think they might start a new sport, perhaps called “hydro-foil racing.” No not a $100 million version, but an affordable one of say 15’20’ that would have the similar speed of the AC72 cup boats. Keep in mind you will go faster than wake boarding or water-skiing. Also you have no fuel costs. I first became familiar with hydro-foils at Cypress Gardens in the late ’50s. Dick Pope who was one of the best promoters of the time, put a hydro-foil on a waterski that would raise you two to three feet out of the water. I guess because you couldn’t do tricks on it nobody pursued further development. He also had a 14’ runabout with a horizontal propeller on a short mast, which when towed would take off and fly 20 to 30 feet in the air. I would just bet the Kiwis who helped develop the current Cup participants will have one on the market in the next two years in the $20,000 to $30,000 price range. They might even form hydro-foiling clubs. Who knows, maybe it could become an Olympic Sailing class. That speed would put some spark into the sailing races. Stay tuned, and the first I hear of it I’ll let you know. America’s Cup update The defending team Oracle started the Cup 2 races behind due to a penalty assessed on something they did on another boat over a year ago. I don’t understand this, but as they say, “I didn’t write the rules.” Also of this writing Oracle has begun winning races and the score is 8 to 5. Keep in mind Oracle had to overcome that 2 race penalty. They seem to do better in lighter air. Oracle needs a lot of

Don Carter State Park dedicated as respite for ‘working people’ By Jane Harrison Don Carter, a hard working man for the people of Georgia often referred to his new namesake park on Lake Lanier as a respite for “working people” and dedicated his efforts to making it so. On Sept. 16, state and local officials joined park staff and visitors in dedicating Don Carter State Park to the Gainesville outdoorsman and conservationist whose labors helped assure working folks have plenty of natural places to unwind. “It will be fun for children and middle aged workers and families,” said Carter of the 1,316 acre park on North Browning Bridge Road in northern Hall County. Since the park officially opened July 15, more than 60,000 people had visited the first state park on Lake Lanier and only the second Georgia park to open in 15 years. Carter smiled frequently during the dedication ceremony as Gov. Nathan Deal and others spoke about decades of cooperation between multiple administrations to create the park. Many told of meeting Carter on land and water as he kept watch over park construction with nearly daily visits to check on trees he wanted to stay put, layout of

trails, and sites for cabins. Deal, who lived in north Hall near the park site most of his adult life before becoming governor, praised Carter for his 29 years of service in the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The former Gainesville real estate executive helped the state acquire nearly 300,000 acres for parks, wildlife management areas, and recreation. “I thank him for his insight and foresight all these years,” Deal said. He called the park a “great achievement” that puts a new “cog in the wheel” of the state’s number two economic driver, tourism (second behind agriculture). Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle noted Carter’s wisdom, integrity, and commitment to Georgia’s outdoors. “No one is a greater conservationist and outdoorsman than Don Carter,” he said. “How fitting this new wonderful park not only bears the name of Don Carter but also is representative of all he’s about.” Don Carter’s son, Doug, took the podium offering words his father asked him to share. The day’s honoree, whose speech is affected by Parkinson’s disease, beamed on the front row, seated beside his

wife, Lucille. Doug Carter traced the park’s origin to key roles played by former governors Joe Frank Harris, Zell Miller, and Sonny Perdue and DNR commissioners Leonard Ledbetter, Lonice Barrett and Joe Tanner. Doug Carter evoked an image his father envisioned at the park: “a family … sitting by the campfire, enjoying the beauty and saying I’m sure glad someone thought about creating something like this.”

Don and Lucille Carter, center, listen to remarks during the dedication ceremony.

Hall County Commissioner Dick Mecum said the park “remade the community landscape” and proclaimed opening day “Don Carter Day” in Hall County. Local residents Stephen and Donna Hill walked off the wooded trail in time for the dedication ceremony. “This is our first time here. They did a great job,” Donna said. “We’ll probably get the ($50) park pass” to cover many return visits, Stephen added.

The festivities took place under sunny September skies and included lunch, a performance by the Flowery Branch High School drum line, and tunes by local guitarist and song writer Mike Armstrong. His song, “Breeze off the Lake,” written about a pretty place on the northern shore, seemed a fitting tribute to the quiet stretch on the Chattahoochee River channel of Lake Lanier that became a state park.

Additions already in the works for new park By Jane Harrison The wide sandy beach and 1.5 mile paved multi-use trail seem to be the most popular features at Don Carter State Park, said Park Manager Will Wagner. He reported more than 60,000 people had visited the park since it opened on July 15. The park’s eight cottages and camp sites were almost completely booked in September, he added. “The primitive campground is more popular” than park officials anticipated, he said. The 12 walk-in sites, suitable for tent or hammock camping, are located in secluded plots off the multi-use trail near the boat ramps and fish cleaning station.

Plans are in the works to expand the camping areas and create a campground for “car campers” next year, Wagner said. The new campground, with drive up campsites for tent camping, will feature a shaded one-way entry for sites close to the lake, he said. He added that heavy rain last winter and spring caused park planners to postpone construction on the car camping site. But officials wanted to go ahead and open up for the public to enjoy features that were ready by July. Wagner said horseback riding trails are being laid out. Park staff plans to meet with local equestrian clubs to seek their input.

October 2013

The feel of fall is in the air October is without a doubt, my favorite month of the year. Cool fronts become stronger and more frequent resulting in that “feel of fall” in the air we all enjoy. October is also the second driest month of the year, averaging 3.41 inches. (April is the driest month, averaging 3.36 inches). The fall color is certainly making its presence known this month, especially the last week of the month. Everyone is asking what my prediction for fall color will be. Based on my experience, I think the above average rainfall we have had would mean less brilliant fall color this year. That being said, I also believe the good soil moisture we still have will mean a longer season. Speaking of above average soil moisture, my thoughts quickly turn to the tropics. It has been a rather unusual tropical season this year. We have seen an increase in dry air and dust from the Sahara keeping the Atlantic in check and really limiting tropical storm development. However, in October, the most likely area for tropical storm development is much closer to home, in the Gulf of Mexico. As I pointed out, cool fronts will be moving through north Georgia with greater frequency this month. As they move through, they have a tendency to stall out in the Gulf of Mexico. Often times, we see low pressure areas develop along these stalled boundaries. These low pressure areas can sometimes “spin up” into tropical systems. With the Gulf being very warm and with many

warm water eddies, there is plenty of fuel for a tropical system to deGlenn velop and get stronger. I Burns am not so much concerned with the wind Lanier from any developing Outlook system as I am for the rains they can bring. In recent conversations with our state hydrologist, a system that has the potential to bring 5-10 inches of rain to our area could be devastating. So, we’ll certainly be keeping a watchful eye on what happens this month. I know you are all wondering what this fall and winter will be like. I am wondering too! This year we are in what we call a neutral pattern. That means we have no Pacific Ocean cooling, ( La Nina) or Pacific Ocean warming, (El Nino) to change the global wind patterns. We know what type of weather a La Nina or El Nino tends to bring. However, in a neutral pattern we really can’t make a winter weather prediction until we begin to see how weather pattern across the globe are evolving. As of right now, the Climate Prediction Center is forecasting near average or slightly above average temperatures for the winter months. The CPC is also forecasting drier than average weather for the winter. I would assume this is subject to change so stay tuned! Enjoy the beautiful blue October skies, the mild temperatures, and the beautiful colors of Autumn. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

Time of year to get geared up for boat show mania Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. Well it’s that time of the year when the annual boat show season is beginning. I’m fortunate to be able to attend the Annapolis Boat Shows beginning Oct. 3 and the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show Oct. 31, and what a time it will be. It is expected that 350 new boats will be presented at the An-

napolis Power Boat Show, ranging in size from 8-80 feet. This is always an exciting time. There is new technology, new designs and the enthusiasm this year is fueled by a changing market. In 2012 new boat sales increased 10 percent, and thus far in 2013, sales have increased another 5-10 percent. These boat shows present

everything from luxurious motor yachts to trawlers, and high performance boats and coastal cruisers, and what an exciting time it is. At these shows there is always an opportunity to see the latest in marine equipment, and speak directly with company representatives regarding any questions or issues you may be having with their products. The Annapolis Show this year will be somewhat different. The management team has put together a combined show where there will be the Powerboat Show the first week, combined with a Brokerage Show. As many buyers are looking for quality used boats, it has been suggested that having a combined show of new and used boats will fuel the economic impact the show will have. On Oct. 10, the Sailboat Show, which is the largest sailboat show in the US, will highlight the latest models being offered. These shows generate millions of dollars in revenue, and while being the largest and best attended, they only represent a small portion of the other boat shows across the country. The Atlanta Boat Show will be

opening on January 9th in downtown Atlanta, and while it doesn’t present the larger motor yachts and trawlers, it does present a wide range of boats that are among the more popular designs, suitable for lake waters in and around the area. Houseboats, sailboats and runabouts make up the majority of boats purchased at this well attended show. According to statistics, most of the boats actually sold at the Atlanta show average less than 27 feet in length. However, I have toured the spacious houseboats, pontoon boats and sailboats and am always amazed at the availability of useful information provided by the various brokers and agents. After years of boating I have come to the conclusion that the most important decision to be made in purchasing a boat comes down to “how do you intend on using the boat?” I have seen so many buy a boat because they like the layout, or they like the color … with no consideration as to whether or not the boat is suit-

able for how it will be used. As it is always the case at some point, the boat is not used, or the owners continually remain frustrated being unable to do what they wanted to do from the start. When we went from sail to power, it took three years. We climbed on every good looking boat we could find, and must have read five or six books on boat design and studied the layout of hundreds of boats. It was a trying time, but the time spent was well worth the effort. Going to boat shows can be lots of fun. You can explore, you can dream and you can spend lots of money. The excitement of being around other boat owners is contagious so we encourage everyone interested in boating to make plans to attend a boat show. Take your non-boating friends along as well, especially if you enjoy watching them get excited about boating, and possibly buying a new boat. - Until next time, Bob & Carolyn Wilson

October 2013

Author’s debut novel tells believable, emotional story of World War II By Pamela A. Keene With a career in medical diagnostics sales and marketing under his belt, Oakwood’s Jim Stephens rather seems an unlikely candidate to pen a romantic story of World War II. But don’t let appearances fool you. Stephens has aspired to be as writer for most of his life, and now he’s done just that. With “Fields of Gold,” the retired Stephens has created a compelling story of adventure and romance – not the bodice-ripping kind, but something that’s emotional and heartfelt – set mostly in England during the Second World War. “The idea for the story first hit me when (my wife) Candis and I were in Ireland and I heard Sting’s ‘Fields of Gold,’ sung by Eva Cassidy,” Stephens said. “The imagery of that song was so vivid and just stayed on my mind for months. That was the seed of the story that became my novel.” Several years after that trip, Stephens retired, but it still took about a year before he was ready for the daunting task of research and writing. He purchased two laptops to add to his desktop, vowing to leave one “pristine” –

not connected to the internet. “I didn’t want to risk corrupting or losing any files,” he said. “I’d work with all three computers on – two for research and the third dedicated to my writing.” Stephens started by writing the first and last chapters. “About half-way through the book, the characters, especially Matt, Joanna and Suzanne, took over and the story took on a life of its own,” he said. “There were times when I felt like I was sleeping with three women – the two females in the story and my wonderful wife. The story became compelling to me.” According to Candis, some days Jim would head into his office first thing in the morning and stay until after dark. “Other days, he’d research for several hours, then do everyday things and perhaps return to writing later in the day,” she said. Stephens was meticulous about his research, finding several surprises along the way. “I found out through my research that – coincidentally – Clark Gable was stationed at the same military base where Matt was assigned to serve, so Gable’s real-life story became part of the book,” he said.

“It was truly something that happened serendipitously, as did many other things in the book. I feel like all the research really paid off.” He has two large bankers’ boxes filled with pages of research, print-outs from the internet, photographs and other tangible evidence of his commitment to accuracy. Parts of the book are autobiographical, as well, including the framework for the young and carefree Matt. Stephens included one of the couple’s cats in the book. The tuxedoed cat Haiku’s photo graces the back of the printed version of the novel. “Candis and I met because of her dog,” he said. “She was in the park one day and her dog – who was never particularly friendly toward men – walked over to where I was sitting on a park bench and sat down next to me, so that I could pet her. That was the start of our life together, and it seemed fitting that a pet, Joanna’s cat Haiku, would readily accept Matt when they first met. Haiku paved the way for their relationship as well.” “Fields of Gold” spans a broad timeframe, from 1939 through the

mid-1970s. It follows the lives of Matt, Joanna and Suzanne as their lives intertwine – in a believable story – over those nearly 40 years. The characters are compelling, the story engaging and the descriptions of the times and the places transport the reader into what seems like a real-life story. Stephens self-published the 470-page novel in a trade paperback format. He also negotiated availability on Kindle e-books as well as print-on-demand at most

bookstores. So far, online reviews have been positive. “Fields of Gold,” released in June 2013, is available at Amazon Kindle/Fields of Gold/Jim Stephens. Stephens also has printed copies of the book for purchase by calling him at 770287-7881. Special Olympics Regatta raises nearly $30,000 By Pamela A. Keene Great weather and a good turnout netted nearly $30,000 for Special Olympics Georgia in the middle of September at the Special Olympics Regatta, hosted by Southern Sailing Club for the 14th year. That brings the total raised since the regatta began to more than $400,000. Nearly 30 skippers competed for trophies at the annual event held at Sunrise Cove Marina. Additionally, Chris and Linda Webster won the grand prize – a four-day threenight all-inclusive vacation at a Wyndham Resort in a choice of three locations – Mexico, Grand Bahamas or Dominican Republic. They raised $3,065 from donations, the highest amount of any skipper this year. Each skipper raised a minimum of $250 to enter the regatta. Southern Sailing Club earned the perpetual trophy as the club that raised the most funds among its members. “This was an awesome year for us,” said Jennifer Daniell with Special Olympics Georgia, who served as coordinator and liaison between the sailing event and Special Olympics Georgia. “Most of the marinas participated this year, the weather was fabulous and everyone had a great time.” In the spinnaker class, which completed five races over the two-day regatta, Mike MacLeod won first place in the low-PHRF fleet; Tom Sawchuk took first in the mid-

The first-place winner in the low-PHRF fleet was Francis Ivanyisky; the high-PHRF winner was Pete Winham. Daniell said that there were more than 170 people at the Saturday evening dinner, dance and silent auction that featured more than 50 items. 50 Plus Dining dancers get into the beat at Luna’s Restaurant By Jane Harrison When the band starts playing, couples rush the dance floor as if they’ve been waiting years for their moment to shake a leg. It’s a sight rare at most local music venues where patrons often sip some liquid courage or wait until just the right song before moving into the limelight. On the second Tuesday night each month the dance floor at Luna’s Restaurant in downtown Gainesville fills with spirited dancers who’ve yearned for a venue for the 50-and-older crowd. Young, shy or rhythm deficient Gen X’ers could use a dance lesson from their elders in The Beat and Boomer generations who get out there and boogie at first beat. The monthly event, 50 Plus Dining Dancers, waltzed from Susan Beem’s dreams into the atrium at Luna’s after the former Florida resident sought a dinner and dance place similar to her favorite spot in South Walton. “The Red Bar became so popular people lined up trying to get in. They had to turn people away,” Beem said. “There’s a big need here in Gainesville” for entertainment sites for active 50-plus adults, she

said. Communities for active seniors around Lake Lanier – Cresswind, Deaton Creek, Lanier Village Estates and others — house multitudes of retirees hankering to move their feet. Two years ago Beem began hunting a restaurateur willing to provide a dance floor, dinner special, and a time slot especially for seniors. Juan Luna made the restaurant commitment. Scott and Carla Moore, owners of Moore’s Wealth Management, took charge of entertainment bookings. The event launched in July offering a $10 special dinner menu from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and dancing in the Atrium from 7 until 9 p.m. More than 150 dined and danced at the August and September gigs. Last month’s band, the Laigh Langly Trio of Atlanta, played an eclectic mix of tunes from the 50s to 80s. Their mid-set version of “Honky Tonk Woman” had the dance floor rocking. Then “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” slowed it down for some cheek to cheek. “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” stepped up the rhythm again. After dancing non-stop to about five tunes, Buford couple Horace Cook and Barbara Tyur-

czy took a break. “Usually I only get out there after a drink … I don’t know what’s happening,” said Horace, who dropped by the bar after an energetic tour of the dance floor. “This is a great place to come. The only other place I ever dance is at weddings,” he said. “I’m so glad they did this. It’s a great outlet for seniors,” Barbara said. John Boggs said he and wife, Kathy, are usually first on the dance floor. The Oakwood couple enjoy the mix of music spanning decades. Not everyone attends with a dance partner. The unattached have ample opportunity play the field in a welcoming environment where few sit out for long. Word of mouth has spread news about the event to seniors’ clubs and communities, said Andrea Barber, Luna’s General Manager. She added that the crowds enjoy the dinner and dancing; there is no sales pitch, no investment seminar, or advertising ploy. Scott and Carla Moore take suggestions from attendees when choosing bands and DJs. They seek a wide variety of acts to appeal to patrons whose musical fa-

vorites vary from AC/DC to The Righteous Brothers. “Entertainment for seniors is a great need in our community,” Carla said. “A lot said they needed a place to get out that’s not a crazy bar,” Scott added. After attending, many come back

and bring their friends, including many singles who come out and have a good time, Carla said. The Moores also hit the dance floor now and then. “I just get out there and move around,” Scott said. “It’s hard to keep up with them,” added Carla.

Busbee told me not to worry, just keep on doing what we were doing to promote Georgia tourism.” After leaving the department in 1983, Spivia remained in the film business, negotiating a lease with the City of Atlanta for Lakewood Fairgrounds south of the city. The site had been used in numerous movies, including “Smokey and The Bandit” and “Smokey and the Bandit 2,” in which the fairground’s original wooden Greyhound roller coaster was blown up. Ed Spivia at home with some of his memorabilia from the film business.

Always a visionary, Spivia conceived the idea for the Lakewood Antiques Market, with upwards of a thousand dealers coming together from around the country to sell their wares. Thousands flocked to Lakewood every time the market was open and soon his business model shifted. Lakewood operated until October 2006. By that time Ed and his wife Barbara had built a successful antique business and had opened a second location – Lakewood 400 Antiques Market – near Georgia 400 in Cumming, after spending two years in Buford. “The location was perfect and it was a great move for us,” said Barbara. “Our dealers have been so loyal; it’s just amazing.” They continue to operate Lakewood 400, open on the third weekend of every month. The facility recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. In 2006, Spivia was tapped by then-Governor Sonny Perdue to head the new Georgia Film, Video and Music Advisory Commission, which continued until 2012. During that time, the film industry saw a resurgence that’s continuing to burgeon. In 2012, Georgia played host to more than 330 productions, and 2013 is maintaining that pace with films across the state from North Georgia to the

beaches. Lake Lanier life The couple lives on a quiet cove on Lake Lanier with their two dogs – Dusty and Trouper. They enjoy spending time with their blended family – Ed’s daughter and two sons and Barbara’s three sons, and their grandchildren – who all live nearby. Some of their children also have film connections. Barbara’s son Brian Beegle is a casting director who’s been acting since he was 9. Over the years, the couple has done some traveling as well. You might expect Ed and Barbara’s home to be filled from top to bottom with memorabilia from Ed’s years in the film business, but he’s really pretty low-key about it. There’s a collection of framed photographs of him with various stars over the years and one wall that highlights Ed’s accomplishments and recognitions from his days with the state. The couple still stays in touch with Reynolds and Needham, who have visited them on Lake Lanier several times. Spivia’s vision and contributions to the state’s film industry are highlighted in “The Industry Yearbook: 1973 to 2013,” recently published by Atlanta’s Oz Publishing. • Shore Lines Continued from Page 46 by Hal Needham, speaks to Ed’s and Needham’s relationship, Spivia’s ability to make things happen when it came to films and Needham’s resounding endorsement of Georgia as an excellent production location. Spivia is also profiled in the book, and perhaps this quote from his profile summarizes his legacy to the film industry: “I believe my legacy lies it the future, not the past. I believe that for decades to come, filmmakers and producers will rec-

ognize our state’s natural resources, extraordinary talent, and friendly policies and will continue to choose Georgia as the location for their next great films. “All of us who have worked so hard to make sure that Georgia welcomes the film industry – at the state level, in our cities and smaller communities, in government and business – know that Georgia and the film industry will continue to be economic partners, creative collaborators and lifelong friends. That feels great!”

Fall means it’s festival time in North Georgia By Jane Harrison Many north Georgia towns celebrate fall with annual tributes to the culture and resources that made them. In Dawsonville, moonshine, car chases, and runins between the still-hacking revenuers and “trippers” formed the roots of NASCAR and forged a local reputation drenched in homemade corn mash. That strong homemade beverage will be on tap this year, free for the tasting from an operating still at the Oct. 26-27 Mountain Moonshine Festival. “They’ll be giving away free samples,” said Brenda Mason, of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce. There is a limit, “unfortunately” she said, probably about an ounce. But, there’s no limit to the fun, games, crafts, music, and food coming up this month in festivals across the region. Here’s a limited sample: • Big Red Apple Festival, Cornelia. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 12, downtown near the apple monument and depot. Free admission. www.corneliageorgia.org, (706) 778-8585, Ext. 280. The 25th annual festival offers about 75 craft booths, hayrides, car show, music, kids’ zone.

• Georgia Marble Festival, Jasper. 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 6, Lee Newton Park, 500 Stegall Dr. $5 adults, $3 children age 6 and old. $20 weekend pass; marble quarry tours $12 adults, $10 children (includes festival admission), free to ages 5 and younger. (706) 6925600, www.georgiamarblefestival.com. Named for the solid Pickens County resource, the festival includes craft exhibits, bluegrass championship, marble sculpture contest, and rare tours of the Georgia Marble Company quarry. Reservations recommended for quarry tours. • Foxfire Mountaineer Festival, Clayton. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Oct.5, Rabun County Civic Center, 25 Courthouse Square. $5, $20 maximum per family, free to ages 5 and younger. (706) 7465828, www.foxfiremountaineer.org. Billions added to state economy thanks to hunters, anglers, wildlife watchers Across the board, spending by Georgians on outdoor recreational activities such as hunting, fishing and wildlife watching increased in the most recent survey, providing an economic benefit of more than $5.5 billion to the state. The number of Georgia wildlife watchers increased by more than 400,000 since the previous survey in 2006, and reflected a huge jump in days of active participation, from two days to 30. Average hunter expenditures increased by $1,000 per participant with the average number of days spent hunting up 35 percent. While the number of anglers did not increase, the economic effect of what anglers spent increased by more than $200 million. The Georgia state report, part of the 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, measures public participation in hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing and other wildlife-dependent recreation, as well as how much money is spent pursuing these activities. The report is available at www.fws.gov/southeast/georgia/economicimpact-ga.html. Conducted every five years by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Census Bureau, the survey has become one of the most important sources of information on fish and wildlife recreation in the United States. Federal, state and private or-

ganizations use the rigorously-compiled and detailed information to manage wildlife and wildlife-related recreation programs, and forecast trends in participation and economic impacts. “This is a ‘must read’ for anyone who hunts, fishes or watches wildlife, as well as news reporters, economists and elected officials,” said Cindy Dohner, Southeast regional director of the Fish and Wildlife Service. “It is filled with valuable facts that show the economic impact of hunting and fishing and wildlife viewing.” Nationally, here are some highlights: More than 90 million U.S. residents 16 years old and older participated in some form of wildlife-related recreation in 2011, up three percent from five years earlier. The increase was primarily among those who fished and hunted. Wildlife recreationists spent $144.7 billion in 2011 on their activities, which equated to one percent of the gross domestic product. Of the total amount spent, $49.5 billion was trip-related, $70.4 billion was spent on equipment and $24.8 billion was spent on other items such as licenses and land leasing and ownership. The number of participants in hunting, fishing and wildlife watching rose from 33.9 million in 2006 to 37.4 million in 2011. The data show that 33.1 million peoSee Wildlife, page 59

Outstanding, historic places to dine in Boston This is the final segment of a two-part series on Boston. Before biting into the mouthwatering bone-in filet mignon on my plate, I was mesmerized by the colorful view of the Boston Harbor panorama from my table at Del Frisco’s of Boston. This architectural masterpiece was built on the popular Liberty Wharf allowing picturesque vistas of the harbor and downtown. Patrons can choose the lengthy waterfront patio dining area or just plop down at the impressive circular showpiece bar. The grand entrance leads to a stylish main dining room, flanked with deep booths and private dining rooms. The interior design features modern fixtures, slashes of color and a unique art collection that highlights the complete dining experience. The dinner menu is elaborate, but these are suggestions for an unforgettable palate pleasing evening: Appetizer: Crab Cakes with Cajun Lobster Sauce Salad: Del’s Salad with Mixed Greens, Tomato, Carrot, Crisp Bacon and Croutons Soup: Boston Clam Chowder Entree: 16 Ounce Bone-in Filet Side: Lobster Macaroni and Cheese Dessert: Lemon Cake with Lemon Buttercream Icing and a Lemon Glaze (Unless you’re a big eater, this order is easily enough for two people.) Del Frisco’s of Boston is THE best steak place in the area, has a special ambience and atmosphere and the friendliest most accommodating staff. Both the Maitre d’ (Jaimie), General Manager (Anthony) and their servers make sure that no guest is overlooked. For more information or reservations, call 617-951-1368.

MORE INFO: 770-289-1543 JFish51@aol.com www.fishinglanier.com While touring downtown Boston on the Upper Deck Trolley with Boston Super Tours (617-742-1440), I found two great places for lunch. Both the Granary Tavern in the Financial District and Durgin Park in Quincy Market offer unique tastes using traditional dishes. Granary Tavern is a 250 seat restaurant in a building built in 1816 that has two floors, two bars, an exposed kitchen, a sunsoaked patio and an atmosphere that bridges the gap between historic and modern. Their focus is on healthy preparations with locally sourced ingredients. My suggestions are to try a cup of the freshly made soup of the day followed by their special Granary Burger with beef from Archer Angus Farms topped with Vermont cheddar on a brioche roll and hand-cut fries. For information or reservations, call 617-4497110. Though Durgin-Park in Quincy Market goes back to Revolutionary days, its true fame for serving purely Yankee meals started almost 150 years ago when John Durgin and his partner, Eldridge Park took control of the restaurant. These old Yankees decided that the best advertising is plenty of good food on the table which has carried through to modern times and still works.

The lunch specials are: Poor Man’s Roast Beef, Homemade Fish Cakes pan roasted or fried, Chicken Livers sautéed in wine with bacon, Chicken Pot Pie, Shepherd’s Pie, Frankfurters steamed or grilled, Knockwurst steamed or grilled, Potted Beef with onions, Boston Schrod broiled or baked with seasoned breadcrumbs, Yankee Pot Roast or Fish And Chips. Of all these historic Yankee offerings, the absolute best is the Yankee Pot Roast, which will melt in your mouth and cause your taste buds to do gymnastics! For a pleasant break in the middle of a day of touring Boston, have lunch at DurginPark for a taste of history and local cuisine. Contact them at: 617-227-2038. Nobody comes to Boston without dining on great New England seafood, and one of the best and most famous eateries is Legal Sea Foods. This renowned restaurant is just across the street from the harbor at Long Wharf that is the home port for numerous cruise ships and whale watching boats. General Manager Patrick Snow runs a fun and very tasty place with an indoor aquarium and lobster tank to entertain the younger crowd and some of the best seafood dishes anywhere for the older folks. Despite the many entrees and side items, the best choice at Legal Sea Foods is always the steamed lobster. Top that off at the end of the feast with hot coffee or tea and a healthy portion of Boston Cream Pie with chocolate sauce, rum caramel sauce and toffee almond crunch. You may re-

gret the calories later, but you’ll kick yourself if you don’t try it! For the last night of your Boston visit, go to the best historic atmosphere in the city at the famous Chart House where General Manager Brian Kirk and his excellent staff will treat you to an unforgettable evening. This national chain restaurant is totally unique in Boston because it is located in the old Gardiner Building which dates back to 1760 and was once the accounting office of John Hancock, who was the most noticed signer of the Declaration of Independence. It is four stories of original brick and the oldest building still in use on the historic Long Wharf. A good beginning is the Lobster Bisque laced with sherry to get that lobster taste satisfied followed by a Chart House Signature dish of Pine Nut Crusted Shrimp Linguine with lobster, fresh heirloom tomato and basil in a light wine sauce including a side of Crab Tater Tots. This lighter fare will leave room for

the Signature Dessert of decadent Hot Chocolate Lava Cake. It is a rich chocolate cake with molten center, made with Godiva liqueur and served warm, topped with chocolate sauce, Heath bar crunch and vanilla ice cream. You may need some help for this sinful creation! For more information or reservations, call: 617-227-1576. This is simply a small sampling of the outstanding and historic places to dine in this city by the sea that is so much a part of American history. I am always pleasantly impressed by the openness and hard work ethic of the wonderful people of Boston and constantly thrilled by the high caliber and magical tastes I find in all of their eateries. Therefore, I can already tell that my taste buds and stomach will rebel if I don’t make plans to return soon! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

Hunters: It’s almost time for waterfowl, deer hunting at Lanier With fall approaching, many lake users are asking the Corps of Engineers about hunting opportunities at Lake Lanier. Although the opportunities are limited, the lake can provide an excellent, local location for hunting. Two types of hunting are allowed – waterfowl (Geese, Teal, and Ducks) and deer. Waterfowl hunting is divided into two seasons; an early season for Teal and Canada Geese and a late season for Ducks and Canada Geese. The Corps of Engineers allows hunters to use some of the closed parks as access for waterfowl hunting. Two important changes were made to the waterfowl regulations this year. The early season restriction on hunting in Bald Ridge Creek, Shoal Creek, or any area south of Lake Lanier Islands has been removed. And West Bank Park will be open for hunting January 1, 2014 through January 26, 2014. For public safety, West Bank Park will be closed to all public use, except hunting, during this time. Hunters wishing to access West Bank Park will be required to enter the park by boat only.

Know when it’s time to make the right decision Wanted to close out this series on the navigation rules with some practical ideas on how to remember this sometimes complicated subject. We have traveled a long distance covering the foundation and basic points of the fine art of collision avoidance. With countless methods on the market to teach the laws you can choose which one is best for your needs. Mariners desiring to get a USCG license should consider inclass instruction. It takes about 40 hours of study and concentration to prepare for the paper exam, with normally three times that amount of time on the water to begin to feel comfortable in any type of situation. After all the bottom line is to be able to make the correct decision, at the right time, with confidence! To discover if a license is what you need please log on to the USCG National Maritime Center www.uscg.mil/nmc. The method of remembering I urge you to consider revolves around duplicating a series of pictures and short phrases to master the key points of the rules of the road. From only two blank pieces of copy paper you can construct this valuable diagram

consisting of 11 boxes drawn in a sequential order, repetitiously until you master them without error. This helps by: • Visual recall of the rules; improves passing scores and total understanding • Blank “scratch paper” is allowed in the testing room • Graphics and word phrases serve as memory anchors for all the rules • Long term and positive results • Takes an average of 10 hours to learn, with practice • Compliments all types of course syllabus; classroom, online, and short seminars • Not only pass the exam but remember how to successfully use that knowledge and avoid danger.

Speaking from experience in marine training both as a student and instructor, true mastery of a task is best accomplished with a visual method of learning. There is no substitute for hands-on proficiency, adding emotion and visualization brings you ahead of the curve and able to sense danger even before it presents itself. This brief period of time for assessment makes the difference between reaction and prevention, with the latter the much preferred result. To receive a copy of the two page memory graphic please contact me by email and I will send it online in a PDF attachment. For more information and details on how to use the memory guide please register at www.navteach.com for an informative online live seminar. Scheduled dates will be posted on the site by December. Safety first For public safety, all Corps parks and trails located along Buford Dam Road, except West Bank Park, will be closed during

the Buford Dam hunt. Hunter education courses are offered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and in most cases are required prior to hunting. Many of these hunting opportunities take place around water and may require use of a boat. Hunters often forget to wear a life jacket because they do not associate drowning as a risk while hunting. No matter what your primary activity may be, wearing your life jacket is always recommended any time you are around the water.

• Wildlife Continued from Page 57 ple fished, 13.7 million hunted and 71.8 million participated in at least one type of wildlife-watching activity such as observing and photographing wildlife or bird feeding. Some 71.8 million U.S. residents observed or photographed birds and other wildlife in 2011. Almost 68.6 million people wildlife watched around their homes, and 22.5 million people took trips of at least one mile from home to primarily wildlife watch. Of the 46.7 million people who observed wild birds, 88 percent did so around their homes and 38 percent on trips a mile or more from home. People spent $54.9 billion on their wildlife-watching trips, equipment, and other items in 2011. This amounted to $981 on average per person for the year. Statewide, here are some results: More than 3.6 million Georgians 16 years old and older participated in some form of

wildlife-related recreation in 2011, with the largest increase in participants in wildlife watching activities. Wildlife recreationists spent $3.6 billion in 2011 on their activities in the state. The Georgia data show that 829,000 people fished, 392,000 hunted and 2.3 million participated in at least one type of wildlife-watching activity such as observing or photographing wildlife or bird feeding. Over 2 million people wildlife watched around their homes, and 1.1 million people took trips of at least one mile from home primarily to wildlife watch. People in Georgia spent $1.8 billion on their wildlife-watching trips, equipment, and other items in 2011. This amounted to $639 on average per person for the year. Complete survey results are available at: http://wsfrprograms.fws.gov/Subpages/NationalSurvey/NatSurveyIndex.htm.

Bugs and the daughters that are frightened by them Phillip Sartain is taking a break this month. Please enjoy a “Best of” column while he rests. It usually all starts with a series of blood curdling screams, followed by the sound of pounding feet desperately seeking escape, and ends up with a hysterical plea to be saved from an instantaneous and horrid death: “Dad, there’s a bug in my bedroom!” It always makes me feel sorry for the bug. Actually, it was kind of cute when my daughters were bugsized themselves. It allowed me to assume the role of Sir Lancelot, sans the geeky bowl haircut, stepping up to slay the offending insect. “There you go, the bug’s all gone. Let’s go to bed now, daddy has to finish watching an important football game.” “But, I’m afraid the bug will come back.” “Not a chance, the bug is all gone – smushed, obliterated, clobbered.
