HOUSING COMPLEX FOR THE ELDERLY This project was developed during the Integrated Workshop. I designed a housing complex for the elderly located at Lapa, a well known bohemian neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro, and should contemplate not only apartments, but also stores to the public and services to the residents. All classes were given to enrich this project as well as personal tutoring with the teachers. So, the study was since the concept, the design, presentation to a competition, sanitary and water plans, structure and construction technology details. 2016.
The Concept The smell of coffee recently made; a plant hanging at a balcony; a photography album opened on the table. Familiarity, on the sense described by Freud, as the known thing, the recognized, the home, the familiar, the usual; what send us to places inside ourselves where security and stability dominates and a smirk is shown on face. Pallasmmaa says that the act of living is how we relate with the world; and the concept of place is more than the essence and physical limitation. The place is a stage for rituals, personal rhythms and routines, with also a dimension in time that has continuity. It is an adaptation of a thing, of material being to the world and to a family and to the subject. Therefore, Architecture comes in this context, as it has the function of giving a material support to the daily live of its inhabits. He continues stating that the architectural images creates feelings amongst the daily life. The floor incites us to get up and live; the door to cross it over and see the world; the window to contemplate the outdoors views. What brings us to conclude that architecture creates metaphors that has mental impacts, like emotions, memories or even experiences. The development of this project stimulate these rituals, the human interaction; the materials that are used instigates people. The deployment project was developed to adapt the architecture to the exiting elements that will be preserved, like the almond tree and the brick wall, where there’s still vegetation growing. The surroundings of the site are mixed in styles and functions, so there we can see from old “sobrados” till high full-glass buildings. So, the option of a project with simple lines and enriched cladding just fitted right in the context. This way, the design is a long-stretched building that departs from the brick wall, creating a space for contemplation from the inside, as there is a patio in there, but also from the outside, since balconies that will be included in some apartments, enriching the connection between the dweller and the external world in a way that will instigate memory and imagination. Sounds, texture, colours, smells and taste. The five senses to a multisensory architecture.
The existing almod tree and t he brick wall a re f actores t hat a re taken i nto consideration for the building implantation on the site, because they are triggers of people’s emotions.
ROOF- TECNICAL FLOOR
The f amiliarity concept o riented all the project. The p rocess was iniciated considering the site as a solid block t hat needed t o be transformed i nto a home for the elderly.

To p reserve the existent a lmond tree, we took off a block, creating the tree patio.
To p reserve the brick wall, we took off another volume, creating a contemplation space where the sensorial garden will be built.
This way, we developed a simple architecture design but t hat values t he e lements chosen t o trigger t he m emories and t he imagination of the users.
The building will r eceive balconies so the residents can increase their relation w ith the exterior world and cherish the human interaction.
