Mister Cookie writes a book: Old Grandpa Waterman Lorraine Francis illustrations Pieter Gaudesaboos • A new book in the Mister Cookie writes a book series • By acclaimed illustrator Pieter Gaudesaboos • A heart-warming tale about growing old Old Grandpa Waterman is looking for a job, but it’s not easy when you’re as old as he is. “Oh dear... I’m too old to run after thieves at night”, sighed Old Grandpa Waterman. “I had better look for another job”, he thought, as he shuffled home. He trudged past the bakery, where the baker was already at work. Perhaps I can help him, thought Old Grandpa Waterman. I love cookies and cakes. “When I was a child”, he said to the baker, “I always helped my mother when she baked cakes.” His efforts to help the baker also end in disaster. The oven goes up in flames. Then it turns out that there is one thing that Grandpa Waterman is good at: putting out fires!
The unusual illustrations by Gaudesaboos lift this book beyond the ordinary. He skilfully handles the tensions between recognition and alienation, between graphical abstraction and narrative visualisation. Heart wanted, lost and found Eef Rombaut illustrations by Emma Thyssen • Wonderful debut by Eef Rombaut and Emma Thyssen • A book on divorce, co-parenting and love • Straight from life and from the heart The King sighs. It is time to find a prince for his daughter Princess. But the big yellow dinosaur who lives under Princess’ balcony won’t let any prince in. There comes knight Starwars. ‘I will beat the big yellow dinosaur! Then I will marry Princess.’ He beats his chest and fires a magical beam. But the big yellow dinosaur is not afraid of star beams. He smiles and… bites off the arm of the knight.
This is how a crazy story on the modern search for love begins: marriage that ends up in divorce and new relationships that bring along co-parenting. Realistic but covered with a sauce of knights, dragons and princesses. Heart is Eef Rombaut’s first story. The story is based on her own life and secretly the character of Princess is her alter ego. Besides living in a palace, Eef is a mother, educational trainer and founder of Sweetie Darling, a designer store for children. Emma Thyssen is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Little Witch Elena Mariette Vanhalewijn illustrations Jaklien Moerman • A new title in the Lannoo Retro series • Familiar story about a naughty little witch • Reworked text Little Witch Elena is clever, but she is easily distracted. She regularly does the kind of magic that her mother is not pleased about. One day she goes too far and her mother sends her out into the world of people as a punishment. She is not allowed to return until she has done something good for someone. This turns out to be easier said than done, because most of the time people help her! “Let there be … a swarm of flies”, whispered Elena. She crossed her fingers in a strange way. A moment later twenty flies were buzzing around the room. “Well done”, giggled Elena. “And now: twenty spiders!” Suddenly there were twenty spiders crawling around. They began to weave a web to catch the flies.
“Psst! Elena!” It was Matsie, Elena’s best friend, tapping on the window. “Are you coming out? We’ve found a hollow for our club.” The little witches had long been looking for a place where they could try out spells and perform horrible magic. Elena took her hat and broom and ran outside. A moment later the two little witches were whizzing over the forest on their broomsticks. Not long afterwards Elena’s mother discovered the flies and spiders in the house. She was furious. Two flies had already got into the soup… Mariette Vanhalewijn was a journalist and a successful author of children’s books in the 70s and the early 80s. He counts and counts, until he finds himself in the drain pipe. ‘Hey!’ shouted a shining raindrop. ‘What are you doing here?’ ‘Me? O… well… I don’t know. I was in my bed. And I couldn’t sleep. Little Adam Mariette Vanhalewijn illustrations Rita van Bilsen • Little Adam was published for the first time in 1983. It was a milestone for picture books • Surprisingly up-to-date content and illustrations • Awarded the ‘Boekenleeuw’ and the ‘Staatsprijs voor Jeugdliteratuur’ I think I will draw a new world, Adam says looking around. I will put my broom right here. This will be the centre of the earth. That should be a good start. First, I draw a line: this is the equator. And then I draw a big circle: that is the earth. Little Adam is not happy with the way the world is. It’s too busy and too noisy. He sweeps it all down the drain and starts afresh using his coloured pencils. He draws flowers and birds and trees and children. But in the end the new world doesn’t look quite as he had expected!

Lucas and the words Carli Biessels illustrations Wolf Erlbruch • Lovely story about a special boy who has trouble reading and writing • Very recognizable theme for everybody who is starting to read • By award winner Carli Biessels
The children in class are learning to read. First the easy words, then some difficult words too. Everything is going well until Lucas discovers he can’t read nor write the word s h e e p. Nobody understands it, not even the teacher.
Carli Biessels is an educationist and worked as a children’s psychiatrist. She wrote some art history books and several children’s books. In 2010 she received the ‘Woutertje Pieterse’ prize for her youth novel Juwelen van stras.

Mrs Irene thought it was a little sloppy, she said, a head in the middle of letters. But when Lucas told her he did that to help the letters, she agreed. Lucas was so thrilled he made an extra effort to write the next word: dog.

I think it was love Kathleen Vereecken • An original historical novel in a delicate style • The protagonist integrates many philosophical and literary layers • A successful novel which has won the ‘Boekenleeuw’
In the 18th century, Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote influential books on education, but he brought his own 5 children to an orphanage. I think it was love tells the story of how the life of his son might have been. Leon grows up in an adoptive family in which only his new sister takes care of him. When she dies, he travels to Paris to discover literature, love and the identity of his father. In a sensitive and delicate style, Vereecken manages to enthral her readers. Leon is one of the most disarming protagonists youth literature has to offer. This cheeky, yet vulnerable survivor longs for love but rejects it at the same time. He holds on to life with an insatiable hunger for knowledge and stories. This original story has been very successful and has been awarded the ‘Boekenleeuw’.
We award a historical youth novel which uncovers the secrets of history and uses them to create an original and emotional story. We also applaud the novel’s psychological strength and its philosophical and literary layers, which never endanger the plot. – Jury report ‘Boekenleeuw’ Kathleen Vereecken has written several youth novels and is known for her beautiful, illustrative language. For her novel All colours grey, she was nominated for the ‘Gouden Uil’. She has also written Goose bumps on your skin and butterflies in your belly and The greenhouse effect or why does our earth warm up? For I think it was love, she won the ‘Boekenleeuw’.

How I killed the beast inside my head 23 ways to not be invisible Mieke Versyp illustrations Trui Chielens • Diary of a teenager trying to find herself and find her place in a family that is falling apart • A touching and at times hilarious coming-of-age story Talula. That’s my name. I am 12, nearly 13. In my family there are three children older than me and three who are younger. Oz is the oldest, then comes Orange, then Splinter, then it’s me, and then Feelfree, Happy and Mystery. We are a close family, that’s what our mother always says. Although it’s not quite clear to me who belongs and who doesn’t. It’s always so busy here. It’s hard being the fourth child in such a big family. Nobody sees me. But that does have its advantages too. This is how Talula’s revealing diary begins. She is growing up in a difficult home situation: her mother’s various partners are coming and going all the time, the house has seen better days and overcrowd-
ing and constant changes have made their mark on each of the children. Under these difficult circumstances, Talula is trying to find her own way. Mieke Versyp is house and production dramaturgist at Kopergietery. Together with Pieter Gaudesaboos and Sabien Clement she created the book Linus, which won the ‘Gouden Uil’ prize for youth literature and received a Boekenwelp award. Moreover, she has a sneaky lover with whom she is secretly planning to start a new life in Spain. Worried about her reaction, she hasn’t found the courage to tell Birdie about any of it. A sudden hiccup from Felicity’s past throws things into a jumble: on the island where she grew up, her father has passed away.
The day of the funeral comes around, and Birdie, Felicity, her estranged sister Alice and Felicity’s lover set out to make the pilgrimage to the island. Tensions start to broil, slumbering emotions stir awake and a massive storm whips things to a head... Birdie opens doors for teenage readers that generally stay shut, and displays a depth of psychology that is unusual on YA-shelves. From the very beginning to the end, a small cast of intriguing characters sweep the reader along in a tale of inarticulate first love, fundamental loneliness, with a great deal of miscommunications along the way. Laure Van den Broeck won a ‘Boekenwelp’ (the runner-up of the ‘Boekenleeuw’, the award for Best Children’s Book in Flanders) for her first YA-novel, The Seventeenth Summer of Maurice Hamster. She lives in Southampton, UK, where she works part-time at October Books, an independent co-operative bookshop.
