S/S14 TRENDS

Florals aren’t exactly fresh faces on the spring/summer runways, but this season’s florals are a far cry from the soft, dainty, feminine florals we’ve seen in the past years. The new breed of florals have gone bolder, bigger and badder, packing a serious attitude punch with embellishments, embroidery, print and texture. 100% Blair Waldorf-approved.

TYPOGRAPHY We’ve been seeing 90s-inspired looks on the runways for several seasons now, but the trend has gone to a whole new level when oversized logos popped up at the S/S14 runways. From political messages and slogans, to attitude-filled comments and self-referencing, trademark-infringing, clever word-plays were saying it loud and proud at Zoe Jordan, Alexander Wang, Mary Katrantzou, Moschino, Paul & Joe, Sibling and Christopher Kane. Whether it’s a straightforward message or something a bit more mindboggling, one thing’s for sure: it’s all there for us to read and figure out.

MATES

French Sole’s S/S14 collection hits the global trail, adopting ideas from the four corners of the earth

Never failing to make us lust after every pair of timeless pumps, French Sole has done it again. This time around, founder and designer Jane Winkworth gets inspired by her global travels around the world. Take a romantic stroll along the Parisian Garden with pretty pastel ballet flats in suede, lace and patent crocodile leather accented by bejewelled toe-caps and glitter heel-counters for a touch of go-all-out girly feminity. The classic Henrietta shape is available in pale lace and pastel quilts and the Love Hewart style is updated in ice-cream suede with gold heel and trim finish. Shoes have taken a wild turn this season in the Urban Jungle. Leopards, zebras and snakes lurked on classic ballerinas adding a lighthearted playfulness to the collection. With this summer promising to be a scorcher, sandals are high on the fashion agenda. Knowing this, French Sole rolls out a new range of structured sandals inspired by Moroccan culture. Step out in staple ballet flats that perfectly encapsulate the vibrancy of Morocco. Lot C-103, Level 1, KLCC. Tel: 03-23820808

. THE HERMÈS BIRKIN BAG When Jane Birkin took her seat next to Hermes chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London in 1981, it was a journey which would change handbag history. The British actress and singer lamented about how difficult it was to find a leather weekend bag. Jean-Louis had an epiphany at that moment, and the covetable Birkin handbag was born. THE HERMÈS KELLY BAG Originally designed in the 1930’s by Robert Dumas, the Kelly bag wasn’t a hit until the Princess was photographed shielding her baby bump from the prying eyes of the paparazzi with her favourite Hermès bag in Cannes in 1956. Photographs of her covering her stomach with her Hermès were splashed all over the world. As a result of that, the classic house renamed it the ‘Kelly’ bag. THE LADY DIOR BAG The late Princess Diana was also a moniker of an exclusive handbag. In 1995, Bernadette Chirac, at the time First Lady of France, asked the house of Dior to create an exceptional gift for the Princess of Wales, who was about to arrive in France for a state visit. It is said that Princess Diana fell instantly in love with the bag. The house renamed it ‘Lady Dior’ in her honour. The Lady Dior bag is styled in a quilted leather crossstitch pattern, carried by carefully crafted crocodile handles attached by golden rings and adorned with dangling gold letters that illustrate Christian Dior’s fancy for charms.

LADY DIOR

THE GUCCI JACKIE O BAG First crafted in the late 50s, the Jackie was originally called the Gucci Bouvier bag. The bag was renamed the Jackie after being photographed numerous times on the arm of Jacqueline Kennedy, America’s First Lady. It was no surprise that her love of the bag led to its huge success, launching Gucci’s iconic Jackie handbag into a well-known status.

THE DEL RAY MULBERRY HANDBAG Following the success of the ‘Alexa’ handbag, Mulberry launched the ‘Del Ray’ bag in tribute to American songstress Lana Del Rey. Emma Hill, the creative director of Mulberry, on meeting Lana Del Ray immediately fell in love with the retro style of the singer-songwriter.

We can think of nothing easier or quite as cool as toting this carefree shape this S/S14.
