In the past. The women of lake Atitlan weren’t able to read and write. Weaving was their way to express their thoughts and imaginations. The paterns they traditionally used were taken from their natural inviroment-plantes, leaves, animals wings and hair combs. Today women have more variety of patterns like stars, volcano, animal footsteps, human figuers and letters representing their locality. Also the colors have changes during the years. Traditionally womens’ cortes (traditional skirts) were made only in black and white, with a small colored decoration. Today a lot of the women are using whatever color they desire according to their imagination.
