On the men’s side of LAPALME, it is just as action-packed. We have Cameron Boyce, Disneys rising star and lead in the Descendants, who later next month is being honored for with the Pioneering Spirit Award for his work for clean water. Also, I ended up in the desert with Levi Meaden shooting our new trend report. Everyone knows Levi for his romance with our fall cover girl Ariel Winter. Levi plays a superhero in the brand new “Pacific Rising”. Speaking of superheroes, there is nothing more exciting than our male cover star Cameron Cuffe. Cameron plays Superman’s grandfather in the much anticipated Syfy original, “Krypton”. This may be one of the most anticipated shows of the year, can’t wait to see. Young Hollywood has never been so good. Sincerely

POWERHOUSE PLANTS THE INSIDE TRACK ON STAYING YOUNG AND HOT Written by: Coleen Janeway, Founder of SkinFoodBodyLove

Super nutrition is something wonderful we are just beginning to learn more about, and my recent encounter while exploring Main Street, in Santa Monica has proven to be an experience worthy of sharing. Quench your thirst with 8 powerfully healing tonics made with love and intention. What sets these tonics apart from most of what you see on the market is the targeted body systems concept.

So what is a tonic? An herbal tonic rejuvenates and helps to restore all systems of the body, promoting overall good health and balance. They fortify and nourish creating resilience, vigor, and wellbeing. Tonics in some form are medicinal liquids that work cumulatively and support longterm health benefits of the body. Prolonged use encourages graceful aging and longevity. Exactly what we all need right? Who does not want to age gracefully or figure out the secrets to longevity. Each tonic has what you would expect: vitamins and minerals. Why you should care is, these potent hand prepared plant based drinks have no preservatives, nothing added or artificial to counteract the hours of individual brewing time the combination of organic herbs, leaves, berries and roots go through. They stick to what they do best, focusing on only eight types of tonics. Locally sourced and made in house only, Simples represents a broad spectrum of traditional herbal remedies, each selected for their high nutritional profiles. In learning more about tonics, I was curious to know the difference between a tonic and a tea. Being a brewmaster of tonics seemed so interesting and intricate. How does this process actually take place? Most of the nutritional components of medicinal herbs and plants come from their different flavonoids, alkaloids, vitamins, and minerals. For humans to assimilate this nutrition, some parts are water-soluble where some use different menstruums, such as alcohol, vinegars and oil. So while both tea and Simples tonics rely on water extraction, teas are steeped for short periods of time and extract a less potent medicinal dose. A Simples tonic uses a high quantity of plant material and steeps covered for a long period, resulting in a dense and powerful serving of plant nutrition. A daily labor of love and intention done by hand as infusions extract the maximum amount of nutrition and health benefits. Looking for a superhero, a hug, and a chill pill in your life? Look no further, Simples. has the trifecta of choices in the feel good department- and let me tell you they work! Schisandra, Linden, and Oatstraw are three names you will

LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM

Schisandra, Linden, and Oatstraw are three names you will want to remember. I personally experienced six of the eight offerings and loved all of them equally in taste and felt they worked as described on the product packaging. My favorite choice for skin food is, of course Schisandra, is fiery and tart. This stimulating berry is nature’s cure-all. Going where it is needed, this adaptogen is an overall health tonic, restoring and balancing whatever systems need support. Schisandra provides a powerful energy and mental clarity boost without the jitters of coffee and is a great choice when focus is required. Taken over time its benefits accumulate and physical and mental stamina is increased. Most people know Schisandra as a beauty tonic as it tonifies all systems of the body, including the skin. Seriously, what is not to love about that?

Another notable tonic on the roster: Linden, the most tender of trees, graceful, and calm, Linden is fantastic for opening the heart and soothing the soul. Its abundance of phytonutrients and antioxidants support its traditional use as a digestive aid, encouraging proper digestion and eliminating digestive discomfort. I especially love Linden for it’s calming and slightly sedating action. This tonic is wonderful for anxiety, tension headaches, and sleep disorders. Soft and silky in taste, these nourishing flowers and stems are a delightful way to brighten a cloudy day. A liquid way to end your day: Oatstraw. This tasty tonic brings sweetness of all kinds as it delivers its payload of healing nutrition to the human body. A soothing nervine, loaded with B vitamins and essential minerals, Oatstraw contains more magnesium than any other plant. This contributes to its ability to balance hormones and soothe frazzled nerves. It not only eases tension at the moment but also, over time, can restore the nervous system, reinstating emotional balance. It is no wonder the world of powerhouse super nutrition is getting so much recognition. Simples tonics is helping carve that path. Next time you are in West Los Angeles, do stop by Simples.Tonics and say hello to founder, Traci, an amazing woman and herbalist with a passion for life and plants. Simpletonics.com

I met Ginger a while back, so my opinion of her as a professional business woman was already very high. I have respected her from afar, but after our recent chat it is clear to me why she has so many loyal clients and staff. Planet Salon is a lifestyle knowledge based beauty destination. The culture there is why her teams of stylist succeed. Ginger provides her employees with ultimate support, training, and communication which becomes the cornerstone of a growing thriving modern business.

PLANET SALON

Lifestyle editor Coleen Laneway sits down with Ginger Boyle the owner of Planet Salon on being a celebrated hair dresser and making the world a better place. Written by: Coleen Janeway, Founder of SkinFoodBodyLove

24

Recently I had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the original disruptors of beauty. Ginger Boyle is not your typical stylist or for that matter business owner. I was interested in knowing how she challenges herself and what makes her business thrive and sustainable. Her 20+ years in the beauty industry is not just a badge of honor but a tribute to the timelessness she creates in her own life. 2017 was a year of celebrated success and awards for Ginger, she was honored by receiving the Lifetime Achievement award from Southwest Hairdressers Guild and the world renowned Arrojo company bestowed Ginger with their Hall of Heroes award - Women Making Waves, she shares this honor with greats like Horst Rechelbacher and Vidal Sassoon.

“Opinions Matter,” this is something Ginger said to me, and it rings true for both her clients and her staff. She considers all feedback whether good or bad. “It’s how you grow and learn - professionally and personally” she comments. “When there are opportunities we could do better, we use those as teachable moments and really invest in the future of our staff.” It is so refreshing to see this approach in action at the salon. Ginger is helping young artists by making a difference in such a creative outlet where tons of stylist can

flounder for many years if they are not exposed to a mentor or have a good environment to excel within. Speaking of mentors, I asked Ginger what keeps her so organized and on point with not only the salon operations, but also within her personal life. A veteran in the salon industry, she has figured out work life balance is paramount to survival and inner peace. As a health and wellness focused writer I applaud her on this achievement. It takes a village as Ginger reminded me, her husband and partner walks the walk with her invoking inspiration. And all the while challenging her to see the details beyond her own perspective, which is already

25

pretty detailed and beautifully executed. He is the Yin to her Yang. Ginger always knew she wanted to make the world beautiful. She knew she had found her calling as a stylist at a young age. During her time as a salon owner in the mid-west she was fortunate enough to meet Horst Rechelbacher. Ginger will tell you this was a life altering moment of opportunity for her. She attributes her path in beauty and mentorship with Horst to be one of monumental value to her career path. He is the DNA of her inspiration, always since his passing and in fact entirely the reason she wears Jasmine as a daily fragrance, a reminder of how far she has come. Through his years of friendship and support she knows there are limitless possibilities to where she is going! From her first Aveda conference all those years ago, fast forward to now. Ginger credits the power of positivity and the art of calculated intuition for her continued success and award winning salon. “Finding your authentic self and checking in with your goals and then really taking risks will equal

ultimate success.” I asked Ginger what her superpower was, she immediately smiled at me and with 100% confidence shared this: “I am dialed into the heartbeat of my clients”. She takes pride in knowing the subtle clues of what makes her clientele happy. She is a visionary so it’s easy to understand why her clients trust her vision and keep coming back for more. Ginger sets the bar high and her salon apart from others by practicing an ecological commitment. Planet Salon really does practice a fully sustainable model of recycle, renew, and reuse whenever possible. Ginger and her team of stylists, makeup artists and colorists have made an environmental decision to offer more than just hair care. It is evident the moment you walk into Planet Salon. “Do what you do well” and “Don’t get comfortable”, two great pieces of advice Ginger mentioned in our chat. I agree! She has not strayed far from her original dream as a young girl, and her wish of making people beautiful, just like the great Edith Head. One would say Ginger is accomplished but not nearly peaked, next level is her future destination! Planet Salon is by appointment, open Tuesday thru Sunday. Treat yourself to an elegant experience you won’t regret.

LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM Dani and Taryn then set out to find a space to work in jointly, and while doing so had a ah-ha moment. “We began to share with others we were in the market for office space and found so many other women with the same need,” says Dani. Dani and Taryn began to contemplate getting a space large enough to accomodate a few other like minded individuals and thus Biz Babes was born! “There was a need for reasonably priced creative space, and we wanted to build a community-not just a work space.” Taryn mentions. And so it began, community driven, collab minded individuals flocked in! “Success was imminent, and we received such a wonderful response we hit our membership goal within the first 3 months,” shared Dani.

TOGETHER | COMBINED = BIZ BABES: THE REVOLUTION Written by: Coleen Janeway, Skinfoodbodylove founder

The words Biz Babes might be self explanatory but peeling back the layers of what this term means is where it gets interesting. I recently sat down with Dani and Taryn two dynamic female entrepreneurs who are disrupting the classic co-working space in ways only creatives could do. Taking their own independent daily work struggles into account helped shape what Biz Babes is today. Dani met Taryn when they began to collaborate on their respective retail businesses, Dazey LA and Vegetaryn. Thru this collab these boss babes began to realize like other female entrepreneurs around them, there is always this constant battle to find creative space work . They had tried other co-work spaces and found no real sense of community like they were seeking.

30

Detail and thoughtful surroundings was always going to be the plan. Reaching within their networks helped them achieve the look and feel of their space. A partnership of sorts began to develop with brands who saw their vision. A carefully curated selection of furniture and art now hangs in what was once a blank warehouse space. Every angle and corner has something special to offer. This allows its members the opportunity to keep their content fresh and their own brand original. “In today’s ever evolving digital age it was important to us and to our members that this space be truly functional as well as welcoming,” Dani and Taryn mention.

Stepping into Biz Babes is like taking a walk into the future of the young female entrepreneur. Setting themselves apart with unique collaborative resource websites, and subcultures happening within Biz Babes for the sake of community; planative resources, subcultures happening for the sake of the biz babe community; such as their new Community Babe Manager, and women truly support women in one boss babe hub. No wonder there is such a buzz about these ladies and their company. On any given day, you might find a free community yoga class, or an educational series on building your instagram following, or just a place to vent your frustrations about being a small female business owner. Babe creators Dani and Taryn share a philosophy, “work for yourself not by yourself.” Through this vision Biz Babes has blossomed into a plethora of opportunity not just for the Biz Babe founders but for its members too. While “living the dream” as entrepreneurs, they often felt lonely and missed the social interaction of having coworkers. During their one on one interaction Dani and Taryn landed upon a solution to what they were seeking! Biz Babes noteworthy moment - trust the process. It is safe to say these ladies had no idea when they started their search for an office what the plan would be, but within the process stayed true to who they are and their common goal . Beginning this journey to create, a living breathing Pinterest space, for girls who “gram”. Biz Babes is a membership based community offering co-working office space for young female creative entrepreneurs. Look no further if you are wanting to step out of your own home and come work alongside women who inspire and encourage you. Bizbabez.la

From deciding to become an actress and starring on “Grownish”, to being the kind of friend who would donate her kidney to one of her best friends, Francia is making waves throughout Hollywood and life. “You may recognize Francia from her roles in Bring It On, The Secret Life of the American Teenager and more recently Freeform’s Grown-ish. Last year Francia made international headlines for donating a kidney to her close friend Selena Gomez. Now with the success of her sitcom, new projects on the horizon and recently formed support system in Hollywood, Francia is stepping into her 30s stronger, wiser and better than ever.”

LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM You grew up in and around the entertainment industry. When did you decide to pursue acting as a career? When I was 16 years old. It was a bug that hit me when I was little. I used to watch Spanish soap operas, novellas with my grandmother. I would tell her, “Grandma, I’m gonna do this when I’m older.” When I was a junior in high school, I was a cheerleader. Some honestly bullshit incident happened in my cheer squad where I got kicked off the squad for something really ridiculous. I was like, you know what? If I’m gonna pursue this career, I’m gonna do it right now. I started meeting people in the business, and that eventually led me to find my manager. At 16 I started auditioning. When I was 17, I booked Bring It On. It’s kind of been going well ever since. How did you prepare for her role as Ana in Grown-ish? I was nervous about the role when I first got it. The main issue was that Ana is Cuban, Republican and from Miami, and I’m Mexican and Honduran, my parents are Democrats, and I was born and raised in LA. Coming from two completely different backgrounds. Even in Spanish, we have a completely different dialect. I had to dive in and learn about Cuban politics and why most Cubans are Republicans? A fact I was actually surprised about. I was like, oh wow, a lot of Latinos are Republican. That’s interesting. I spoke to someone that used to work for the government and she gave me a three-hour history lesson, broke into three days. I took a lot of notes. I wanted to honor the culture and have some of the Cuban, Miami swag in me in case it comes up, which it did. There’s an episode that aired recently where I called Zoey a pata sucia, which means ‘dirty foot’. It’s a very Cuban, Miami phrase, and I’m glad I did my research. Had I done something that a Mexican would do, then I’m not doing the role justice. I did a lot of research about that. Kind of going back into my own experience and just mixing it up with my research and Ana’s culture and how she was raised. Grown-ish premiered just last month. What kind of response are you getting from your character on the show? Actually a lot of positive responses. People are actually really relating to Ana. Some of them question my judgment, because I guess there have been a few innuendos of me having relationships within my family. I’ve talked about dating my cousin, and being in love with my cousin, or being in a hotel room with my uncle. They’re like, I’m really questioning you right now Ana. Other than that it’s been very positive. I’m glad I did the research again about the pata sucia because a lot of fans from Miami were laughing. They were like, that is so Miami. Having done the research and does the role justice, I’m glad I brought that to the table. I think the biggest complaint about Grown-ish, which is not a bad thing, is that it’s not long enough. It’s amazing. You made international headlines for a very selfless act involving your best friend. What would your advice be for people that are supporting loved ones who are battling a

36

tough illness? How can we be there for people in our lives that are in need? That can be a really difficult role. You know what, when someone is going through something like that, there’s only so much you can do. I was fortunate enough to be able to give a piece of myself to help her, and I’m very grateful for that. Had I not been able to do that, I think what you can do is honestly just be patient. It’s very frustrating. I’m not sick thankfully, but even while I was recovering I snapped at one of my friends because I had a hard time getting up from the bed. She just kept saying, “Breathe, breathe.” I literally went, “Shut the F up,” because I was frustrated. I think in moments like that you cannot take it personally. There’s so much going on within us that you don’t understand, you can’t explain. What I would say is just be patient, support them, do not take anything personally, and don’t go back and say, well you said this one thing and it hurt my feelings. They’re not thinking about your feelings right now, they’re thinking about their life and how they’re going to try to make the best of it.

Black and white polka dot dress available at Club Monaco

That’s great advice. How important is your support system in Hollywood? How do you deal with the pressure of being in this industry that’s so tough? I didn’t realize how valuable that support was until recently. I was very much doing things on my own. I didn’t have a lot of Latina friends in the industry because it’s so competitive. Thankfully it’s changed, but there were very, very few roles when I was first starting. We wouldn’t tell each other about the audition because of how competitive it was booking roles. That’s changed. Gina Rodriguez and Anjelah Johnson were influential for me. I think Gina would first call me, when I first started being friends with her, she was like, “Hey there’s an audition I just went out for, you should go on it.” I could not believe that she did that. I was like, what? That was such a huge lesson for me. I appreciated that support so much. We need each other. There are roles that are few and far between, but if there’s a new Latina that’s on TV, that’s another door that’s opening for somebody else. I just learned the value in that. Recently America and Gina started gathering as many Latina actresses as they know and putting us in a room together, so we can meet and talk about supporting each other in our industry. It’s been so incredible, this unity that’s been happening amongst my peers. What’s your next project? Are you working on anything special? Yes, but I can’t give too much away. I’ve always been a fan of being behind the scenes. There are two projects that I’m working on producing. I’m very fortunate enough that I have the contacts that I do now because of my manager, who’s amazing, and my agent, to bring this to life. As far as on screen, I’m going back for season two on Grown-ish. I’m waiting for that studio film to pop up. I just signed with a new agency and it’s been incredible. I shared my interest in the two projects that I’m working on, and they’re helping me really develop them. Look out for my name in the future as a producer!

There’s more to him than being just another Lyon in the Pride. By: Dakota LaPalme @kotasaurusrex

After thrilling listeners with “Freedom” and “Catch Your Eye,” fans of the ‘Empire’ star can finally lay hands on his long awaited debut album, ‘Sum of My Music.’ As an offering from his own Music Of Sound company, it also marks Jussie Smollett’s debut as an independent artist and executive producer. The project holds only one feature, the producer extraordinare Swizz Beatz and boasts fusions of R&B, Pop and Hip Hop. Jussie won’t be giving us his art in the form of his character Jamal anymore. Instead, we’ll be getting pure, unfiltered Jussie. We got our first experience of this with his debut single and video, “Freedom.” Its a song about complete bliss and love in its purest form. The accompanying video is a beautiful celebration of love. While “Freedom” gave us a pop/R&B power ballad, “Catch Your Eye” seems to be aimed at urban radio. Jussie adds another achievement to his list with this album. Delivering 10 tracks, he shows theres more to him than being an Empire in the Lyon family as he shares his personal journey through each track. Discussing his passion behind music he states, “Music has always been in my heart. Something I can and

will always create. When I was working day jobs in offices, as a waiter, in retail or even as a clown at children’s parties, music was the thing that I could always do at night, on weekends, in the morning time; I could create music around anything I was doing. There’s never an excuse to not create.”

A STORM

IS COMING Child actresses. They’re adorable, precocious, feisty, gifted. Some of them play on cute and peak before they’re 12. But the multi talented ones – with a lot of luck and great parenting – and of course, the right parts - can blossom into true dramatic movie stars: Jodie Foster (who started at 2), Natalie Portman (3), Mila Kunis (11), Elle Fanning (3). And lest we forget, Elizabeth Taylor (9). Now a newish child prodigy is about to get her big dramatic turn. Fourteen year old Storm Reid headlines Disney’s all-star A Wrinkle in Time, their hundred million dollar budget adaptation of the 1963 Newbury Medal young adult fantasy book. As Meg, the protagonist of the Madeline L’Engle’s classic book - a mishmash of quantum physics, innocence and spirituality - she is, SPOILER ALERT: saver of not just the planet – but the entire galaxy. And Storm as Meg Murray, has a much larger role than those of Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine in the Ava Duvernay directed epic.

“When I think about it that way,” the very composed teen – though more young lady - laughs, “it’s very nerve-wracking! I know I got to be part of something huge. I just love sharing the film’s message. I think people will be touched and -hopefully come together as one. That’s what we really need to be thinking about now, in a pretty dark time - coming together as one.” For those never exposed to the much-loved novel, it’s one of the best of the myriad stories of light triumphing over dark – and individuality beating trouncing conformity. Basically, it’s the movie we all need right now, as we watch our neo-fake news autocracy implode when as it gets faced with truths. Storm started booking commercials at age 3; she already knew she had a calling. “I really don’t know where this came from,” she ponders. “I went to my mom one day, and said I wanted to be on tv - that I wanted to be a superstar. I think it was destined; that’s the only way I can explain it. And I’m grateful to have the talent to do so. I think talent comes from God. My mom was shocked – ‘oh lord, what is happening?’ – but she came around when she realized I was serious. ‘If you’re grades are good, and you’re having fun with it, then fine.’ Right away, she enrolled me in classes, she took pictures of me, got an agent.” After her commercial breakthrough at 3, Storm’s youthful career had an uphill trajectory: at 9, she was co-starring with Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejioforin Twelve Years a Slave, in the midst of booking spots on NCIS, indie films and the kids tv circuit. “When I was younger,” Storm starts – “Oh, I guess I’m still young!” (giggles) – “I went to acting classes with kids my age. Now I go to class that’s all adults. It’s pretty fun – and much more challenging.” She grew up in Atlanta, but moved to Southern California a few years ago with her mom, who’s helping her devote her career to acting. Of course, she does home schooling, has tutors on set, and at 14, her voice still has a sweet girlish edge – but her earnestness, respect and reverence for adult wisdom comes across almost louder. “Thank you, ma’am, so much, for the opportunity,” she says about landing her first big magazine cover on LaPalme.”

She refers to director Ava DuVernay as “Ms. Ava,” and her co-stars as “Ms. Oprah” and “Ms. Reese.” When asked about her entourage, she laughs. “Entourage? I wouldn’t call them

that! But I have a great team: agents, managers, publicists, makeup, hair and wardrobe stylists – I’m grateful to have them.” Spoken like the pint size pro she is. She had, like most kids her age, read A Wrinkle in Time in 6th grade, and was haunted by the character she’d wind up inhabiting. “I knew who Meg Murray was, the history of her story – Meg’s so peculiar – weird – awkward. I saw the fierceness she didn’t see in herself. But I didn’t think I would ever play her because she’s Caucasian in the book. “ But two years later, she got called to audition for DuVernay – and it all clicked. “I wanted to share Meg’s challenges, to show the light within her,” she says. “Getting to play her as an African American girl is so moving. When I went into the audition, I said, ‘Storm go in there and do your best, impress Ms. Ava.’ I was really shocked when I did book the film. It was almost too good to be true.” Meg is your classic high school misfit at the start of the book – insecure, geeky – when some mysterious strangers (the iconic Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which) launch her into a time/galaxy journey to battle the dark evil force keeping her scientist father prisoner in another, and much creepier, time zone. Not exactly your perky cutesy Bobbsey Twins heroine, she’s stubborn, impatient, and listens to no one. No problem for Storm. “I actually prefer the dark heavy stuff. Of course, I loved doing Nickelodeon – a fun experience and you make a lot of friends. But I really love the heavy dramatic stuff – tell somebody’s story in depth. Drama is my favorite genre.” Storm finally got to see the finished print three weeks before release – at Oprah’s house, with the rest of the cast. Just a little catered get together in a private

screening room in your average mega manshion. “She doesn’t act like she’s Oprah,” laughs Storm. “She just comes on the set, does her work, treats everyone well – she is an amazing mentor to me now – and I hope a friend.” But she still refers to her as “Ms. Oprah.” Meanwhile, DuVernay liked Reid so much she cast her in the Jay-Z/Beyonce video she directed after the film, Family Feud. “No, I didn’t get to meet them,” laments Storm, who isn’t in any scenes with the world’s most famous couple. “But I hope to meet them soon.” At this rate, she’ll be dining with them at Nobu Malibu pretty soon – at a front table. Just another case of kid actor syndrome - 14 going on 40? “Um – I think kid actors may grow up faster, with the responsibility of having to do school work, learn all lines,” says Storm, in her young wisdom - “but in a life sense, it’s about the people you surround yourself with - what you’re doing outside of acting. If you’re all about the nice things and fame, you can grow up faster. But if you’re doing what you love, and being a regular kid off the set – you can be okay. I’m still hanging out with friends, watching cooking shows. It has to be a good balance - acting and being a regular teenager and human being. It’s not about getting so much attention ALL the time. We’re still kids and we won’t be perfect all the time.” Meanwhile, Storm’s already completed a sci-fi horror flick, Only You, in which she stars with David Oyelowow, going on an international press tour for Wrinkle – and picking out pretty dresses for her red carpet romps. “And you know what?” she says sweetly. “I’m still having fun.”

RUNWAY TO REALITY Written by: Myra Postolache

Street Style is a specific concept which comes originally from British fashion culture. It is a comprehensive approach to fashion industry and producing styles which intersect and differ from mainstream fashion considerations. The “street” approach to style and fashion is oftentimes based upon individualism, not simply current fashion trends. Using street style methods, individuals demonstrate their multiple, negotiated identities, in addition to utilizing subcultural and intersecting styles or trends. This, in itself, is a performance, as it creates a space where identities can be explored through the act(ion) of dress. Many people said that Bill Cunningham was the first democratic street-style photographer. Starting in 1978 in the New York Times , he snapped candid photographs of people on the street and found trends among them. Old and young, thin and fat, rich and poor… his subjects were as diverse as the city he shot them in, and truly representative of the fashions of the time (even if the people in his photos wouldn’t be considered particularly fashionable). More photojournalist than portraitist, Cunningham’s work was incredibly important in documenting the oeuvre of a time. Concurrently, photographers like Jamel Shabazz and Shosuke Ishizu were capturing hip-hop style in the mid-’70s and Ivy League style in the mid-’60s, photographing their subjects in both posed and candid shots that let tribes of individuals showcase trends like Cazal

eyeglasses and varsity jackets. Street style is an incredibly viral, incredibly instant, incredibly addictive facet of fashion that’s changed lots of the ways in which fashion gets made and consumed. Though “street style” as a term — and blogger-making, bill-paying phenomenon — came into consciousness in the age of the Internet, the concept has been around for as long as people have been, well, wearing clothes and walking on streets. Since so much of fashion (and fashion photography) is cyclical, we thought we’d take a look back at the womenswear street style. Very stylish were the collegiate sweaters and pleated skirts which didn’t debut last fall — they were around in the ‘20s! Many fashion bloggers and influencers follow the rule ‘’Let’s bring back that perfect fourth position — toggle coats and midi dress like in ‘50s’’, and the lady bags are definitely “back,” but they looked just as good back in the early ‘50s. We can see on the

street style nowadays also brightly colored thoughtfulness, jumpsuit glistens, stripe coats, heers and feathers and sometimes little bit of fur drama which always goes a long way (for catching attention and camera snaps) like in ‘60s and so long. Street Style nowadays is present even in hot extreme weather conditions for the Spring Summer season. The industry is resilient and it rallied to beat the conditions and offer creative — if bundled — solutions to spring style. The outerwear inspiration is abundant, as were all the ways to layer over and under dresses, pants, and the like. Ahead, see the best street style looks captured by Ancira Adeon. If you didn’t think puffer coats, snow boots, or sweaters upon sweaters could look good, allow these women to convince you otherwise.

DOMINIK GARCIA The multi talented actress Dominik Garcia, talks her new new film Desolation and playing the daughter of her real life father, Andy Garcia

You spent much of your young life dancing. What was the reason you transitioned from dance into acting? Dancing was just something I always studied from a very young age. I was only trained in classical ballet but I love all kinds of dance. I never was on any kind of career path to be a professional dancer. It was just something I loved to do and was a part of me. Acting was a form of expression that resonated with me on a much deeper level. Once I felt that, I knew it was what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. Having spent a lot of time in Miami – what are some recommendations for someone visiting for the first time? I would say go have some good Cuban food and some fresh locally caught fish. If you’re into street art go check out the Wynwood Walls. There’s of course the nightlife and there is no better place for that than South Beach. But the main thing I would say is find your way to get on a boat and just get out on the water. Your new film, DESOLATION, is an edge-of-yourseat psychological thriller. How did you prepare for the role and what choices did you make in your approach to developing Katie as a character? I just looked inside myself to connect with Katie. Which is how I approach all of my parts, I try not to intellectualize it too and come at it with empathy. If I can connect and understand the most vulnerable part of the character than I feel like I’m okay. And I did with Katie as soon as I read the script. So, I just came to set open and in my body and ready for whatever happened. You have acted as your father’s [Andy Garcia] daughter in two feature films “Big Steal Little”

54

and again in “City Island.” Was it a challenge getting into character AND playing your father’s daughter? Someone would think it would be easy, but there are many challenges playing a role so close to you. Well the dynamic is different because these are characters. It doesn’t mirror the dynamic we have in real life. We must acknowledge the relationship that’s written on the page. But of course, say if we’re doing a scene where we are arguing or there’s some heightened emotions, because it’s my actual father I’m staring at while saying the dialogue, the lines can sometimes blur. And we both embrace that. You’ve been pretty versatile in being able to do both comedy and drama. Which do you prefer and why? I have never done a straight comedy. City Island is seen as a Comedy (or a dramedy). But when I first read the script it felt like a drama. It wasn’t until the table read when we all started laughing when we heard it all out loud because of the absurdity of what was happening in the scenes. The thing is with comedy is you can’t try to be funny. You play it straight and let the writing take care of the action. Comedy is a serious business. So, to me I approach both the same. Always play the humanity. You grew up in Los Angeles and are now living in New York City – which city do you prefer and why? I really love living in New York it’s something I knew if I never did it than I would always regret. I love the liveliness of the city and I love New Yorkers. I was really craving that kind of stimulation from my surroundings when I decided to move. But I am a California girl at heart. I do miss it. I miss mountains. I miss my family, my friends, my dog. I even miss driving.

Beautiful blooms such as azaleas, irises, and cherry blossoms dot the landscape and adorn the hills of the breathtaking surroundings.

The GiardinI Botanici Villa Taranto The Villa Taranto garden was established between 1931-1940 by Neil McEacharn who owned the villa and surrounding land that would soon become the famous garden. The Claude Monet Gardens in Giverny Claude Monet was the infamous painter who discovered French Impressionist Art. In 1883, Monet moved into his house in Giverny in Northern France. It was there that he began to design his famous garden called “Clos Normand which Monet was determined had to match the colors of his house. From the delicate arches to the Japanese water lilies that dotted the gardens, the design was everything Monet was famous for from the colors to the shapes to the contrasts in the garden.

The Keukenhof Gardens

The Gardens of Versailles in 1661, Louis XIV hired Andre Le Notre to design the gardens for the Chateau Versaille. This was an undertaking that was indeed no small task. Le Notre collaborated with the superintendent of the buildings of Versailles from 1664-1683, Jean Baptiste Colbert. In addition, he consulted with the First Painter to the King, Charles Le Brun. The king also had to approve all the plans for the gardens which took approximately forty years to build. Today, it is one of the most beautiful and famous gardens in the world.

The Keukenhof Garden is located in Lisse,Netherlands and is one of the world’s largest flower gardens. In fact, it has over 7 million bulbs planted yearly. It is situated on a 15th century hunting ground. In the 19th century, Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher were hired as the landscape architects. The gardens feature a number of different garden styles and also has its famous tulips lying just outside the garden. In 2017, the gardens had a record 1.4 million people visit its grounds.

Gardens have always played an integral part of history from its beginning until present time. A beautiful garden is the crowning glory of a castle or other historical building. The way it accents and highlights landscape and surrounding areas of a place is second to none. In fact, a breathtaking garden will continue to be a most important asset to notable historical places around the world.
