Creative Director’s Letter Dear ladies, Summer is FINALLY here!! After a very long winter and a spring filled with a heavy social climate, it’s time to lighten up. I want to live free, be happy, be safe and have a few fun-filled months! One of the things I am personally looking forward to this summer is hitting the beach. This Issue, LAPALME has got you covered; so to speak. I love the beach and I plan on seeing as many as I can. Check out page 36 for our list of the best beaches on the world, and check them off your bucket list. In addition, this issue is filled with beauty galore. How to keep your gorgeous hair color vibrant, plastic surgery tips, what to eat & of course skin is in, but isn’t it always??!! I had a blast this issue styling so many of my favorite celebs. I LOVED the TV Show THE ARRANGEMENT on E!. A sophisticated elevated soap-opera it was my Sunday night vice. The shows female lead, Christine Evangelista was a breakout. Not only is she a total doll, she is a die-hard New Yorker. We had fun running around downtown NYC while shooting her editorial on page 56. Then of course was my wonderful friend Danielle Savre star of ABC’s new juggernaut, Station 19. Everything Shonda Rhimes touches turns to gold and Danielle is no different. Opposite to Christine, Danielle is a true Angelino. Born and raised in LA, we had to do shoot something that felt ultimately LA. Check out her story on page 42 for the ultimate tv star treatment. I know all of you will see so much of her in the future! I can’t end this letter without talking about our female cover star, philanthropist and free spirit, Maggie Q. I am thrilled that for the first time we were able to have an Asian American on our cover. Maggie is an inspiration. From saving animals all over the planet and some of her epic roles in films and television, Maggie is the ultimate role model for LAPALME. I hope you the love this issue as much as we do. It’s a little disorienting to discover that one of the big and small screen’s baddest badass babes – a slinky sinewy killer ninja in stilettos – is actually a more pussycat than kitten with whip. But Maggie Q (born Margaret Denise Quigley) the foxy femme fatale star of Rush Hour, Mission: Impossible III, Deception, Divergent, Allegiant, Insurgent, and on the flat screen, Nikita, Stalker and Designated Survivor sometimes scares the pants off fans. After she played bad boss lady Mai Linh in Live Free or Die Hard, adamant women on the streets of New York screamed at her to stop beating up Bruce Willis. “And men,” she laughs, “guys do not f--- with me. They’re too scared to hit on me. I’m serious! I seem to give off the not-interested vibe, the ‘I’ll buy my own drink’ energy.’ People really believe I’m badass – even people in the industry. Well - I guess it’s better to be known for something.” Now she’s also known as one half of a power couple: engaged to Stalker co-star Dylan McDermott with whom she cohabitates. They played a couple of LAPD officers (she, naturally, his boss lady), but their off screen life is more like the Crosby Stills and Nash song “Our House.” Except the two cats in the yard are three adopted beloved stray dogs: Caesar (16 year old shepherd); Nevaeh (‘heaven’ backwards – border collie mix adopted near a set) and Otis Redding, whom she dubs “a terrierist: he will steal your heart.” The L.A.-only hybrid “actress/activist”moniker is almost surreal these days – but Q is the real deal on a number of fronts. “From a very young age I was fascinated by animal behavior” says the Honolulu native, who did some modelling in Hong Kong after school. “There’s no bullshit to them. I had 8 dogs at one time. Which I don’t really recommend. And I only take the messed-up ones. But I’ve been a serious animal activist since age 19.” McDermott was allergic to dogs before he met her. “But my dogs don’t eat kibble so they don’t have dander. I cook meat for them. I’m definitely the only vegetarian at the meat counter.” Q always had a bent for athletics (nicknamed “Best Body” senior year), so she jumped full-throttle the action game earlier than most drama queens-turned badass: Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence. “In the early 90’s when I did Rush Hour 2, people would say, ‘it’s so great you do action movies, Maggie – but when are you going to act?’ Action stars always had a cheese factor – Van Damme, etc – till now. It didn’t change

till serious actresses like Sigourney Weaver started doing action. Training, doing action, it’s really fun: the movies are big, the budgets are big. Now A list stars are lining up to do it. I have a physicality – I train – hard - that’s just part of my everyday life. And regular yoga and stretching keeps you limber. Dylan goes with me now – he’s become a real yoga guy. You can’t find a better guy in this business. We’re so blessed. In Hollywood, relationships are so hard – but in the end, when you find that right person, it’s all worth it. Even the duds are worth it!” But now probably her best known love scene’s with Uma Thurman in the recent crime comedy The Con is On. “We had a blast,” she laughs. “I look at everything in my job as - just part of my job. That character is a Russian billionaire’s wife, who’s gay. She does whatever she wants and nobody crosses her. So she has an extra marital affair with Uma – who, by the way, is a great kisser. That was part of the fun – it’s purely sexual, not a lot of romance. Less Call Me By Your Name and a lot more kitsch. Meanwhile, her latest tv project, Designated Survivor with Kiefer Sutherland as the president (don’t we wish), was just killed off by ABC. Rumors are it could wind up revived by Netflix. “I had no clue,” she reports. “It was a real surprise because the ratings were great – we
broke DVR records. But the networks are all vying for live ratings -which is so not the thing anymore. I just see these cancellations as part of the business now. No one’s building careers – it’s so much more competitive.” However, her true pet project – beyond saving pets – brings her yet another hyphenate: actress/animal activist/health activist/entrepreneur, with a company called ActivatedYou she created with Dr. Edison de Mello, an integrated physician and psychotherapist who founded Santa Monica’s Akasha Center. “I wasn’t always a badass,” she laughs. “In fact, I had a string of health problems – particularly colon issues, bloating – everyone has it. I’d gone to so many doctors, and on Nikita I was so tired all the time. There’s serious science on why our bodies don’t break down food properly. Dr. de Mello changed my life – and feeling better changes the world. We decided to start a lifestyle brand that’s not about drugs – it’s about supplements. Watch our videos. Our formula probiotic, a green powder, is the only one like it. I won’t endorse something I don’t believe in. It’s all about the colon, trust me.” They can all be purchased online. So it turns out the badass queen is actually saving the world, not slaying it. Though she kinda does that too.

PILI ANI IS SHARING SKINCARE SECRETS FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND DOING GOOD ALL AROUND Written by: Celia Shatzman

In the Philippines, the pili tree is practically their tree of life. It’s the only place in the world where the resilient tree grows, and the pili oil is an old natural remedy used by locals to treat skin issues like eczema. “The pili oil, which we extract from the pulp of the pili fruit, has wonderful and amazing moisturizing properties and is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E that help protect our skin from harmful free radicals,” says Mary Jane Ong, Pili Ani CEO. “The elemi oil that comes from the sap from the bark of the tree has firming and anti-bacterial properties. It takes six years to fully appreciate the tree for its fruit and the precious sap and we can only harvest one a year. This is what makes our oil precious and rare as we really take time to harvest and take care of this tree, which can grow more than a century old. Pili Ani is the only skincare line in the world that uses two wonderful oils from the pili tree. We are the only producer of these oils worldwide.”
Pili Ani will soon be introducing their volcanic line. “The pili tree grows in the volcanic area of the Bicol region, and this volcano, called Mayon, had recently erupted and spewed tons and tons of volcanic ash, which settled in the ravine of a small town,” Ong says. “We have tapped the municipal town officials and have created another livelihood project for the locals by gathering the ashes. We will produce the new volcanic ash line of detox clays, scrubs and mud packs that have wonderful detox and cleansing features.” A cornerstone of the line is its dedication to organic ingredients. Ong came from a family of organic advocates, but Ana Amigo, Pili Ani’s North America Partner, got on board a few years ago and noticed a change in her health. “You don’t want anything that is not clean in your skin or in your body,” Amigo says. “That is very important because skin is your biggest organ. Especially as we are growing older and our lifespan is now longer, you have to take care of your skin. You want your skin to look as nice as possible at any age.” Launched last year, Pili Ani has a broader mission than just spreading healthy skincare ingredients. The line was also founded—by Ong’s mother—to be able to support local farmers. “I don’t believe in giving back by just giving dole outs for a day,” Ong says. “We want to create a livelihood that would make the
farmers feel that they have a sense of accomplishment and that they are important. We let them know the importance of their contribution in our business chain. In our country farmers are considered a low-income job and I want to change that perception. These farmers are the ones giving life by planting the amazing trees, which in return clean the air and also provide us with precious oils that we make into a wonderful and effective beauty skincare line as well as superfood snacks. There are so many things that we have been planning and we want to be able to help on a larger scale—that is why I thought of bringing it out of our country because there will be a bigger market in the U.S.” To make a difference, Pili Ani buys the product at a fair market price, helps plant more trees, and trains locals on how to tap the trees properly to preserve them. They also aid the local community through scholarships, which provide funding to economically-challenged students so that they can pursue an education. “The farmers are very talented and smart, but the opportunity for education for them is little or none,” Amigo says. “You want to help uplift a country that has given much to us and to other people. It’s important for them and their next generation to be educated so they can help uplift their own community. The generations that come will be able to feed themselves in more ways than one.”

Known as the American Riviera, Travelzoo says Santa Barbara is a haven for sun seekers, culinary and culture aficionados. In addition to surfing, sailing, whale watching and world class hotels, including the newly-opened Hotel Californian, this beach vacay offers foodies a fix. Culinary tourists can enjoy world-class cuisine in trendy eateries including Toma, The Lark, Loquita and the Funk Zone, teeming with tasting rooms and working wineries. “Transportation here is also a plus: a super cheap shuttle can whisk visitors up State Street to shops and galleries, or the nearby Santa Barbara Zoo, and the Amtrak station, which brings travelers from throughout Southern California, is in the middle of it all,” says Travelzoo.
SANTA BARBARA: THE AMERICAN RIVIERA FORT MYERS/SANIBEL: SHELL-HUNTING SANDS This stretch of beach in southwestern Florida offers an easy-going attitude, superb shell-hunting sands and plenty of family-friendly fun. Some of the country’s finest shrimp are harvested here – pink gold, some call them – and hundreds of varieties of shells that attract nature loving collectors from all over the world. The USS Mohawk Memorial Reef, a WWII US Coast Guard cutter transformed into an artificial reef, is located 25 miles offshore and 90 feet below the surface and is a popular diving site. Travelzoo says the downtown area was recently revitalized, with streets repaved with brick, weekly art walks and a plethora of locally-owned shops.

Expedia in its annual Flip Flop report says the most popular international beach destination for American sun-worshipers is Mexico. The travel website picked Playa Del Carmen as a favorite for its ideal location along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, near Mayan Ruins. Playa Del Carmen is known for its bohemian vibe and underwater caves known as cenotes attracting divers from around the world. Hotels.com also picks Playa Del Carmen as top vacation hot spot for its high guest ratings at properties including The Palm at Playa and Mahekal Beach Resort.

The trendiest city along the Mayan Riviera, Tulum draws yogis, spiritualists and A-listers in search of enlightenment and eco-chic accommodations. Known for its yoga retreats, spas and archeological attractions clustered around the ancient walled city of Tulum, a protected national park, this once rustic beach village keeps it real despite the luxury travelers it attracts.
TULUM: BEACHSIDE BLISS BONDI BEACH, AUSTRAILIA: SUNSHINE DOWN UNDER Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most famous landmarks, beckons surfers, fashionistas and adventure seekers along this half-mile stretch of beach, six miles from Sydney’s city center. Hike the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, a cliff top trail between Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee beaches, each with its own unique charms. Shop famous Australian designers in the boutiques lining Gould Street, and delve into Bondi’s main dining district on Hall Street.

Located on the southwestern shores of Maui, Wailea’s beachfront resorts include the Four Seasons Maui, the Fairmont Kea Lani, offering hula and ukulele lessons, and Marriott’s just-revamped Wailea Beach Resort. “Dining and cocktailing here is top-notch and island-inspired, with options like Wolfgang Puck’s Spago and Roy Yamaguchi’s Humble Market Kitchin. There are sexy femmy girls, there are badass boyish girls – and never the twain shall meet - right? Okay, that’s over-stereotyping a bit. But at least that’s the way it’s always been on network television. Somehow Danielle Savre manages to straddle both those poles in her acting career, as the Simi Valley-born curvy blonde, once a face of Mattel/Barbie ads, now packs on heavyweight firefighter gear for the new Shondaland/ABC Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Station 19. Her career really kicked off at 15 when she was cast on the WB’s Summerland, on which she wore a bathing suit 80% of the time. Savre’s gone from curvy to skinny and back again a couple of times, worn boob-revealing tops on magazine covers, played all-American cheerleaders – but she’s also played a marine biologist and a marine. “There’s a trajectory in your career,” she notes sensibly. “I did that revealing cover two years ago – it was my first. I’m not ashamed or upset by it. I’ve always had to fight the stereotype thing – I get it. I finally had to start saying no to cheerleader roles. I’ve dyed my hair black. I cut it to a pixie cut. When I changed my hair, it started to change everything.” These days, she’s back to her natural dirty blonde.

On Station 19, she plays Maya – not only a badass firefighter – but bisexual, to boot. “Being a firefighter is a tough job physically,” Savre says. “Even in terms of acting. We use the real equipment, which can weight 120 pounds. The tank is 60 pounds alone. Someone has to stand behind you and hold you up. When we all get too tired, they give us lighter rubber fake kits. Luckily, I come from an athletic background.” As for playing bisexual – “I don’t emphasize it. Maya’s attracted to who she’s attracted to. I’m jealous – she’s got a lot more opportunity for romance!” For a scene where Maya kisses a girl, Savre went from strapped into full uniform to a body-baring sports bra. “It only last 5 seconds,” she explains, “but I worked out two weeks with my trainer for 12 years, Jason Walsh, every chance I got. I lived on egg whites and chicken. The whole cast and crew know how much I love candy!” That’s a lot of work for 5 seconds of screen time. Surprisingly, Savre’s as comfortable showing off her curvy body as she is playing the tough guyish-girl. “I’ve had to fight the stereotype thing,” she says. “When it comes to portraying sexuality on-camera or in photography, I think taking ownership of it’s empowering. We have to navigate this as women. I have boobs and a butt – and I’ve had casting people telling me to lose weight, and photographers telling me to flaunt it. Do I cover up and hide it? It’s who I am. Some days I wish had no boobs and not butt and no curvy legs. It’s an interesting terrain we women have to deal with – and a constant.” Even as a marine biologist, Savre had to zip up her skintight wetsuit on camera. “You’ve just got to look at it as empowering,” she says with perspective. “I want to put my brain forward – but you have to look at the realities of surviving in this business.” One way she puts her brain forward is being involved in DC For Care, a non-government organization that provides aid to 96 countries. “One of the show’s writers invited me to a dinner in Venice; I got into a political conversation with someone who invited me to DC For Care’s conference in DC. They go to countries and actually ask them what they need. And it’s all geared toward empowering women. Rising star, Christine Evangelista known for The Intern, The Walking Dead and E! Entertainment’s recent show, The Arrangement. Christine sits down with our creative director, Derek Warburton to share all of the inside track this past year. Christine shares her experience getting into her most character as Megan Morrison (played by Evangelista) who enters into an arranged marriage with one of Hollywood’s leading men Kyle West (played by LAPALME spring 17 cover star Josh Henderson) and the most prominent spokesman of the Institute of the Higher Mind.
You are a New York woman through and through, how do you think the city effected your acting skills and what do you think the big difference is studying on the east coast as opposed to being an LA actor? Ah, I love New York. It’s influence on me as a person has been paramount; it’s influence on me as an actor has created versatility, dynamism. Growing up in all the wildly varied cultures makes you tough yet vulnerable, glamorous and smart. It is the environment to grow up in. You’re directly exposed to it all. The city inspires my curiosity, creativity and most importantly, work ethic. I’m not at liberty to say the differences in studying acting in New York vs. LA because I’ve only really trained in NYC, but I think it’s safe to say that New York has a more “classically trained” philosophy (many of the great method acting founders were based in New York City), but both cities offer tremendous opportunities for actors. You’re wiki page reads like my favorites page on Netflix. Are you the actress that says, “I just want to work?” or do you think you move through phases of wanting to be a movie actress? I’ve always have had a strong desire to work and anyone that knows me can attest to that. Obviously to an extent being truly selective as an actress is a privileged earned...however, I always felt I kept a creative integrity about it. I protected myself as an actress and a young woman and always selected projects that were right for me at the time. We live in a time when the lines between television and film are grey. Fifteen years ago both of those groups were pretty exclusive and didn’t cross over. Both mediums now offer such great projects and storytelling. I do love working in television and having the intense connection it offers; you’re working on something for a longer period of time, you’re connected to something for a longer period of time.

Lets talk about my favorite show on Sunday night, The Arrangement. When I’m selling it to my friends to watch i describe it as an elevated soap opera. How do you describe the show to people? The Arrangement to me was always at its core a love story cloaked in a romantic thriller. It’s a modern day arranged marriage in hollywood with two actors: an up and coming starlet and a mega movie star, who is also the face of a (cultlike) self help group. The series followed Megan as she navigated this relationship, overnight superstardom and this controlling, dangerous, insular organization How lucky did you feel playing Megan Morrison? Is she the actress you are, or the actress you want to be? I think even as complex as she is as a person there is a lot of humanity about her, with a touch of ruthlessness. I do feel very lucky to play a woman as dynamic as Megan Morrison. On a surface level you could look at this character and think she’s either opportunistic or looking for a short cut to fame. I never approached her with those views. To me, she was simply the girl thinking maybe she could have it all: the guy, the love, the connection, the fame AND the career. I admired her strength throughout the series and I admired her absolute vulnerability- which could be argued her greatest flaw- but still its interesting and fundamentally human. We may both be actresses but we both have very different backgrounds and foundations. I couldn’t imaging embarking in a relationship the way she did. I can say though that we have both done crazy things for love.

There is a huge amount of speculation that The Arrangement is loosely based on a very famous couple in Scientology. How do you field those questions? I completely understand why people would want to make such a comparison with the series being based in Hollywood. But Scientology is a religion and the organization on the show, The Institute of The Higher Mind is a self help organization that is totally fictionalized. I actually don’t know much about Scientology, really. Other than what I’ve seen in documentaries. What do you enjoy more television, film? Any thoughts of theater? Each medium offers its own tangible thrill. There is a beauty for an actor in the rawness of theater- the adrenaline you feel on stage and the connection you feel to your audience. You have opportunity to hone the material. Performing the story day after day an evolution that starts to occur. I started my acting career on the off-broadway stages of NYC and that has everything to do with my appreciation for the process of acting. In regards to film, I always say there is a certain magic about it : It is almost impossible to get a film off the ground and completed… it is a UNICORN to make a “great movie”. The magic lays in how every, single part of the storytelling pieces together and you never know how it’ll work until the very end. But I believe we are living in a Golden Age of Television and it has become the strongest medium. I love the long form storytelling and the deep connection I have to the characters I play and the connection it allows for the audience. There is just so much opportunity in television to raise the stakes right now and its very exciting. With the rise of #Timesup and #Metoo, so many Hollywood women have come forward and are demanding themselves to be heard. Do u have your own story? What women are inspiring u the most? Where do you see the movement going? It is a inspiring to see that it has become an evolution, not a revolution. It is a shift in our collective consciousness. This has been the result of people coming together to acknowledge a systemic problem in society that has gone on for long enough. It was very emotional for me to see that 2017 Person Of The Year cover, ’The Silence Breakers’. I am inspired by every woman that has come forward to share their voice, their story and rid themselves of whatever fear or shame they have been carrying. As for where I see this going, I want this to create a broader social change, a generational change so that the children of this world will grow up to understand equality, compassion and humanity. What’s next from you? I am currently working on the film “Beyond The Rush” by director Ante Novakovic. It is a psychological drama about mental illness and a corrupt legal system. I will be shooting during the summer in NYC.

An elegant Georgia transplant living in California, Kathryn has settled into her quintessential California lifestyle. When she is not embracing her superpower - she is an avid surfer girl now! You are sure to find Kathryn juggling her personal and professional life with thoughtful contemplation. Balance is key for Kathryn, and she is keen on disconnecting to connect. It is no wonder Kathryn’s free spirit takes hold of those who meet her. A wife, a boss babe, and an artist, her life is one of intention. I met Kathryn on a beautiful Malibu sunny afternoon, and she shared with me how all roads have led to this moment, a moment of “freedom to create”. She told me she has always had an artistic eye for the process of creating a beautiful aesthetic. The mission behind her purposeful life and this desire to fulfill a need in a market already saturated is based upon firsthand experience. “Being an above average height woman has had its challenges,” Kathryn tells me. Height has always been a struggle for her and finding a brand of jeans worthy of the love and loyalty of tall women. “There really are few denim brands out there who are solely focused through and through on providing longer than average inseams,” she explains. Kathryn is excited to share her talents and meet a need in a market where there has been a disconnect. Long legged ladies like myself wait in anticipation. Finding her match! When you are the tallest in the room coming in at 5’11” you are subjected to the random question of “Do you play basketball?” For those of you thinking about asking this question - unfortunately, no, she does not play basketball. She does find herself being sporty with her husband, sharing their love of the water and surfing. For a southern girl, this is huge. Kathryn married one of Hollywood’s leading men, Mr. Josh Brolin, just recently celebrating their 1 year anniversary. The fortunate who are acquainted with Kathryn have an appreciation for her independence and drive. Who she is as a human spans way beyond any Hollywood persona you may have read about previously. Beauty and brains are most becoming, and Kathryn has both feet firmly rooted in the mix. When we sat down to chat about all the exciting happenings in her life and career, I mentioned to Kathryn I had been curious as to how she felt about the insta-fame generation and its effect on young women. Specifically, those who feel exposing themselves and creating a “sexy persona” would help them become famous. As someone who has worn the professional model hat, Kathryn understands the struggles young women go through as they are trying to find their identity and make their mark. Kathryn’s message is “be authentic” and “be you”, people can sense when a person has these qualities. If you’re wanting to stand out, it’s the best quality you can put forward. Our meeting was right on the heels of the Harvey Weinstein breaking news, of which any female with a media feed was discussing. There was no judgment, just compassion for those who had experienced pain, and yet a sense of hopefulness rang through her words about change and how this would now be the upcoming year voices would be heard. Kathryn shared how she believes
in earning her life. Unapologetically, she likes to get her hands dirty! It’s not about control, but involvement for a purpose. Kathryn planned her own wedding and through the process she connected to the value of those moments which involved her beloved, family, passion, and her heart. There is “no vanity in hard work” she told me. Kathryn feels foundation is key, attributing her success to her grounding support system (close childhood friends and family), as well as her education. She attended the University of Georgia, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, with an emphasis in Photojournalism and a minor in Film and Religion. She also studied photography at Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy. Her love is one of imagery and the ability to thread those images to create a story. At 21 she landed in New York and then eventually relocated to Los Angeles to pursue work in film while continuing to work as a model. Although she is still passionate about all things photography and film, she is seizing new and exciting opportunities within her new entrepreneurial venture. Kathryn’s latest project is underway, Midheaven Denim. A denim line for tall women, designed to meet a need in a niche market she is very familiar with. She plans to share her inner talents and beauty with the world one curated piece of denim at a time. Gone are the days of 70s flower child fashion and legendary rock bands. Coachella has officially transformed into a mainstream music, style, & “cool kid” melting pot in the desert. Has FOMO (fear of missing out) hit you yet? To provide you with a well rounded view on the change that has occured since Coachella’s inception in 1999, I curated a diverse panel of perspectives from: music expert & radio personality Stef Z (who has attended all of the Coachella festivals), celebrity stylist and designer Serafini, and festival newcomer/die-hard Beyoncé fan Raven Bennett.

Beyhive members, like Raven, flocked from across the country to witness her history making performance after a massive build up. Stef Z explained, “It was an interesting situation because Beyoncé was the first performer that we actually knew for a year would be playing, because last year she had to pull out because of her pregnancy. There was a lot of anticipation and boy oh boy did she deliver.” It was a touching moment for Raven, who drove cross country for the event.“To be a woman of color in the audience to experience such a historic performance was truly an honor. We stood in the same spot for 8 hours to be front and center.” “Beyoncé sent a strong message but didn’t force it down our throats. She was the first AfricanAmerican woman to headline Coachella, talked about the power of women, and then let the performance speak for itself!” - Stef Z At the first festival in October 1999, no one would have predicted artists like The Weeknd shedding a tear onstage, Eminem reclaiming his rap throne, and aforementioned Beyoncé slaying with a massive marching band as the headlining acts nearly 20 years later. The transition from heavy rock to electronic dance music to more hip hop and R&B is exemplified by the diversity in the entire lineup. The 167 acts this year ran the gamut from pop leaning rap rookie Cardi B, to alternative rockstar St. Vincent, Mexican family band Los Angeles Azules, Norwegian DJ Kygo, rap trio Migos, and electronic duo Odesza. You can also experience the joy of Coachella without stepping foot on festival grounds, if you are in to the party scene. I became an ardent believer in festival vibes when I party hopped my way through weekend one in 2017. The only Coachella sign I saw was for the city limits, but after spending hours in the sun, from dusk ‘til dawn, with music (& liquor) overflowing...my faux-chella euphoria rivaled those who actually saw performances.The first weekend has become the “see & be seen” period for celebrities, influencers, general industry folk, and wannabes alike. The brand sponsored day parties, gifting suites, fashion fests, and smaller stage shows often rival the main event. Serafini was my Festival Fairy Godfather last

year, and of course, was back at all of the most talked about parties this go around, including: Revolve Festival, Neon Carnival, Rihanna’s Fenty Puma, Lucky Brand, and a surprise performance at Churchome’s event. “Justin Bieber came out to sing worship songs, and it truly was a breath of fresh air from the Coachella weekend- so much love and rest in the midst of such a busy weekend. I think everyone walked away feeling grounded and seen.” The parties everyone was either talking about or trying to crash were Poppy’s Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian bash at a private residence, American Express Platinum House, Republic Records x Dream Estate, Jeffrey Sanker’s White Party, 1Oak, and the Bootsy Bellows Pool Party. However, Neon Carnival is the most eye-catching, celeb crawling, and exclusive festival-adjacent event. This year’s guests, to name a few, included Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Kourtney Kardashian, Diddy, Jhene Aiko, Chance The Rapper, Hailey Baldwin, Post Malone, French Montana, Chainsmokers, Camila Mendes, Odell Beckham Jr., Tyga, Christina Milian, Alessandra Ambrosio, Daniel Kaluuya, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jamie Chung, Nina Dobrev, Amber Rose, Shay Mitchell, Blake Griffin, Scott Eastwood, and Paris Hilton. Celebrities used to perpetuate the “woodstock” reminiscent style at Coachella, but this year there was a noticeable shift. “It’s no longer the mold we’ve seen over the past 4-5 years. No one is wearing flower crowns, and following the same trends,” remarked stylist Serafini. ‘It was definitely the year of the fanny pack. There were a lot of Lemonade-inspired outfits,” added Beyonce fan Raven. Capturing the perfect look on camera was essential to the festival experience...or it didn’t happen.‘I definitely noticed more “photo shoots”...people wanting to document or show off their fashion.I feel like some of the festival is too much about fashion. It’s 90+ degrees in the desert and some people are clearly uncomfortable and it’s almost more apparent then any fashion statement they might be trying to make”, remarked Stef Z. “I feel there’s a turning in festival fashion.In the next year, we’ll see the new chapter in festival style. I feel it’s going to be very street style heavy.” - Serafini While some may have a distaste for Top 40s invasion of the fest, the move away from hippie attire, or faux-chella partygoers, no one can dispute the continuous pop culture significance Coachella commands.

There is nothing more exciting than an up-and-coming artist offering diversity to our playlists. While this EP may not be new, Jordan Fisher is the perfect blend of pop and R&B to keep in heavy rotation this spring. This self-titled EP is a great introduction to Jordan Fisher and what his debut album will bring. The EP begins with his single, “All About Us.” This catchy popmeets-R&B song features an abundance of electronic cues with urban sensibilities. The style seeming to fit Fisher, exemplifying his vocal range of deep soulful vocals to high falsettos. The next track, “Counterfeit” is definitely the most memorable song of the album because it shows the creativity that Fisher puts into his music. The electronic beats provide a cool, modern vibe but also create a dance banger. The eclectic song also features a rap verse, and I dig it! “All I Wanna Do” Features a soulful-rhythmic guiter, pairing perfectly with Jordan’s pleading, sultry lyrics. The short four-song EP comes to a close with “Lookin’ Like That,” a funky pop song with incredible lyrics. Although he has been a little more than busy lately, Jordan took a break from delivering show stopping performances like “Grease: Live,” and “Hamilton” to deliver a new track titled “Mess.” Jordan co-wrote the song with Dewain Whitmore, Patrick “J-Que” Smight and Mike Sabath to tell the story of girls messing with his mind and emotion. “Mess” has a groovy, catchy beat and tropical sound - the perfect backdrop for Jordan’s smooth vocals. With back to back hits that are a bumping dance track but also soulful R&B tunes, Jordan Fisher is going places. If you didn’t know who Jordan Fisher was before, you better familiarize yourself with his incredible EP because there is no doubt that the world will fall in love with his debut album.
