01.FIELD-LIKE SCHOOL ON FIELD "Dialogues between city field and collective school"

School with no classrooms, Competition 04.2017-07.2017 Instructor: Ting Zhang Location: Templehof Field, Berlin, Germany 52°28'25''N 13°24'06''E Architecture Site area: 1050m2 Individual Work

Design Description: There has been a huge disagreement on the use of Templehof Field, which is the biggest city park in the city of Berlin. The investors and government feel an urge to exploit the land because of huge revenue hidden in this 300-hectare land. However, citizens consider it to be the only fairy land in the city for them to conduct all kinds of outdoor activities. This land is surrounded by lots of collective residential communities. In the need for a school for the children living nearby, people compromise in the plan to build a school on the field. To protect the intact playground for citizens, school should build in a prototype of a field. In that sense, the design focus on build a new type of school without formal classrooms.

FIELD

The traditional type of field is alike the type of connected rooms. It saves the trouble of following certain circulation. On the opposite, it provides different possibilities of conducting various programmes. Tempelhof field originally holds this type. The type reveals the very early characteristic of architecture, that is a hall which had no particular walls. Meanwhile, the type has flaws in not having ceiling for shelter.

SCHOOL

The conventional type of school is a playground plus a builing. It has a definite route in the form of corridors. Identical rooms fill other space as functional blocks. Schools are made to be highly efficient in order to ser ve the purpose of education while denying the multiple possibilities of learning. Contemporary education stresses on the influence of learning environment. The prototype of school may lack such motivation.

TYPE-C

SCHOOFIELD

In order to realize a balance in the site, a new type comes out in overlapping the educational architecture over the original field. The design uses four kinds of educational parts to illustrate four type of "classrooms", listed as Display Cruise(Green), Itinerary Cruise(Red), Natural Cruise(Yellow), Lecturing Cruise(Blue). The school tries to overlap the four parts on the field initial playground. The school field aims to combine the two and creates a new form of school as is shown on the left.

02.COLLECTIVISM ON COLLECTIVE WALL "Renovation and reclaim of new collectivism "

Architecture Design Studio in 3rd Year 02.2017-04.2017 Instructor: Ken Lei Location: Qifa Community, Wuhan, China 30°30'17" N 114°25'00" E Architecture Site area: 400m2 Individual Work

Design Description: Collective units are common in cities like Wuhan, a industry-based city in last century. In order to solve the residence problem for workers, government replicates so many collective residence. But in a rapid raise in skyscrapers and high apartment, the area has fallen behind other areas. Phase I The change of collectivism is revealed through the gradual involution of facade. The living pattern has averted from a uniform living unit to mix-up use of commerce and residence. The design aims to provide the people in the unit with modern life style which is promote themselves as commodities. Two types of installation were made to elaborate the space they need for both commercial and residential use for the time being. Phase II New residence are coming in, resulting an area converse in public and private space. This gradual change lead to a collective lifestyle forcing most of the activities happening in community for the reason of incline for disregard on privacy. To welcome another collectivism, this kind of reclaim means more areas for public use while stresses on the unit base individual living capsule. The capsule minimizes and specializes personal fundamental needs while the thicken façade holds more versatile space for all the livings.

HISTORICAL TRANSFORMATION OF FACADE

PHASE ONE: UNIFIED The unified form reveals the structure of society and residents' identity. Workers on the same level share the building. With poor wages and collective regulation, no individual change could be made on the unified facade which belongs to the public as the image of their factory.

1970s Corporation-based United Community

PHASE TWO: PERSONIZED In later time of phase one, people began to realize the importance of privacy. As a result, they called for an enclosure on balcony. The method increase the thickness of private part. However, it cut out the possibility to use outer space. Publicity in the building was impaired.

1990s Minor Aging and Modernization

PHASE THREE: SOCIALIZED The new era brought in more needs in community. To fulfill the functions, extension began to appear on the facade to explore more functions. M o s t l y, t h e y w e r e f o r private use. But it turned out to be a colorful facade to pedestrians. These extensions improves publicity.

STEP ONE Transport the unit palette into the site which is a 3*6m original unit without furniture.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF PHASE II In the future, the new collectivism is the collective of overlapping lifestyle. People come and go in the building with their own capsule adding and removing. However, the public part is eternal. The collective spirit lies in the public façade, since it is facing outwards as a show-off part. The whole building is never completed since the capsules are on the run. The public areas are determined by the first settlers. But we offer chances for people to move around based on different collective preferences.

The personal unit is a two-part capsule which can be personalize by constructors. The curve is designed to part from the straight lines in public area. The 3m×6m capsule is cut into living part and acting part. The first is used to make room for bed and storage which are still. The second part has many mutations due to the profession of owner.

MUTATIONS OF CAPSULE

Mutation One:

There is one wall to separate the working area into two minor parts, it can serve the work better allowing her to see the view of both corridors inside and city view outside.

Mutation Two:

Collector

A p e r s o n’ s v a l u e l i e s in what he/she knows. So the books are indispensable. A myriad of shelves are designed both as exhibition and collection for the owner to get them quickly.

Clothes and make-ups are my weapons. Mutation Three:

Blogger

The newly-invented profession becomes an overnight hit. It is no easy as it looks like. The girl makes a profit on selling her own life privacy. Her daily outfit is showed on the wall for the community as advertisement.

A shower a day makes my haircut cozy.

Mutation Four:

Photographer The vocation needs clean image. So the special need of a personal shower space is place through two parallel walls. In that way, the person owns a relative private space.

03.BRIDGES IN URBAN HERITAGE "Mind the gaps in city context through factory renovation"

Urban Design Studio in 4th Year 02.2018-04.2018 Instructor: Wei Zhou Location: Nan'anzui Area, Wuhan, China 30°33'27"N 114°16'50" E Urban Design Study area: 17.67 km2 Individual Work

Design Description: Nan'anzui District is an area in the geographical center of Wuhan. It enjoys a long industrial history since Qing Dynasty. However, the community has been categorized as industrial heritage because the remaining factories witness the development. Moreover, the area stays 70's look for over decades. The facility and the zoning do not fit the contemporary need. Plus, there are many fences and walls emerging to divide blocks of different function for the sake of management. Under the sophiscated context, I choose to build bridges to mind the gaps. Choosing three different nodes on the main road in the area, each of which is a colliding point between two regions, amenties are created based on the original industrial architecture in the site. The first one try to answer the question of isolation of factory under the existence of height difference. The second changes the wall into track and save place for sports. The last one provides a new hub for all transportations and square for people to act on.

PLIGHT OF HERITAGE RENOVATION Since our city has gone through few rounds of renovation, the gaps emergy between areas. In Nan'anzui, there are four main parts. In the demolition of old factories, old areas seem to be seperated, thus causing gaps in areas. Meanwhile, the long history of whole area changing form an industrial center to a multi-function community was demolished as the process of renewing. The area enjoys a long history dating back to Qing Dynasty when Hanyang Arsenal was started here. It served as industrial manufacturing for over 100 years. Architecture and spaces in the area are characterized as being effective without human-scale serving place. Of note, the buildings are listed as heritage. Therefore, local people are faced with a dilemma whether to stay with the poor condition of community or to move out to seek for new urban life.

04.ANTI-SNS SNS CITY "Give our social life more interactions in reality"

Urban Design Studio in 4th Year 11.2017-01.2018 Instructor: Yugang Guan Location: Hankow, Wuhan, China 30°33'27"N 114°16'50" E Urban Design Study area: 8.33 km2 Individual Work

Design Description: The social network is beyond the regional limitations. Nowadays, we seldom live in city context, but in virtual information environment. We have personal technology devices to conduct social practice, forming a situation where people have the opportunities to communicate to all people on earth. However, the locality has been largely impaired in a relationship. What I oppose is the universal abuse of SNS on personal devices. Because it leads to nothing but chat. Our lives are consist of multiple social activities. The time and site are two essential elements. To ensure we have possible meeting, the city we live in is the best terminal for us to conduct all these social steps. I call for a SOLOMO(social, local, mobile) pattern to deal with the social network services in city. Our city have many surfaces filled with slogans and billboards, but none of them offers platform for citizens to socialize on the city scale. I reform the city façade into social network platform based on locality. Related public space is also designed as a complementary part as terminal for citizens to conduct real social activities.

SITE CONTEXT The site, Jianghan Custon Balcony was located in Hankow, a former concession. Developing rapidly in recent years, it has become the center of Wuhan. The Balcony consists of three parts, the river bank, the historical conservation area and the high-rise apartments. Being a growing central district, the area have many groups, especially young entrepreneurs. They move into the apartments, take tours in the district, more over, hit in the bars along the riverside to have an ONS. The transition from collective society to democratic society is followed by the change from acquaintances society to strangers society. The socialization in the area used to follow the pattern in local social network. At that time, public spaces have real users and meanings. Now these places exists for an occasion use because we move to a global social pattern which does not need offline scenerios. The city, still provides us with a lot of opportunities to extend a SOLOMO social systems using its idle spaces. It calls for a return of local socialization in reality.

SAY WELCOME! The area is waterfront lasting for miles. However, the long dike blocks out all the city view. To regain the vitality in the area, I use projector to move the view to the other side of dike to make the dike "transparent". Also, being a touch panel, the screen has functions like Yelp and Uber, even bullet screen. People could social based on waterfront area, which means it has the privilege of simultaneity and locality. The social interactions are mostly effective than virtual rambling chat.

05.EXODUS TO EXCURSION "Wooden shelter for one in mountains"

Architecture Studio in 3rd Year 10.2016-01.2017 Instructor: Hong Luo Location: Louna, Guizhou, China 25°06'00"N 114°01'10" E Architecture Design Site Area: 9 m2 Individual Work

Design Description: In collective living pattern, we seek for an exodus from the mundane life. In the mountains of Guizhou, a picturesque countryside, I build a wooden construction in a natural environment. The concept is based on the purpose of “taking the world as the paper and building as the painting”. It is intended to create a form with no tension, no strong structure, to create one-person residence in a heaven of peace. Retreated away from the world, being alone is another attitude to face the noise and disturbance. The contemporary Chinese countryside is a utopia independent of the city. The one-person settlement has compatibility and vitality. Facing this primitive natural ecology, what the building needs to achieve is the minimal need, such as the bedroom and restroom. To mix the architecture into the scenery in mountains, the construction spread out like a scroll. Also, the wooden material makes the whole structure buildable in standardized wooden module.

The simulations start with a small amount of initial cells. The growth and the development of the entity’s form are based on cell proliferation (cell division), cell differentiation and morphogenesis. Behaviours and forces thenshape the resulting geometry. The platform for the programming of the simulation is processing. The prototype is made from the defined identical components are made of metal, with components made from metal being utilized for this specific workshop.
