HOSTEL CAFÉ KOTI Better than many hotels Two years ago, a new homely Hostel Café Koti (’Home’) was opened in Rovaniemi city centre. It has set the standard for hostels to a totally new level. New finishing, modern rooms, and an absolutely wonderful lobby with restaurant facilities make this one of the finest places of accommodation in Rovaniemi. And the prices remain at the level of other hostels. TEXT Timo Tapaninen PHOTOS Hostel Café Koti

H

ostel Café Koti’s young entrepreneurs Tuulia Repo and Antti Piiparinen got the idea for starting the business while they were travelling in the Philippines. For them an important starting point for establishing the hostel was approachability and a homely atmosphere. In addition to the atmosphere, they have created modern, simply great premises. Everything in the hostel indicates that it has been designed with love. Even the café

downstairs radiates a new kind of spirit, including its level of service. As is typical for hostels, Hostel Café Koti also has rooms for groups, but there are also individual rooms for those seeking private space. A common cooking place upstairs and a combined television and living room provide an excellent opportunity to spend some time together and get to know new people. If cooking is not quite your thing, or you otherwise want to enjoy other people’s

cooking,, the hostel downstairs provides an open, light and relaxed restaurant for culinary enjoyment. The space was earlier a café, but in two years it has become a popular place of gathering for the Rovaniemi locals, while also providing a la carte food. Let´s try Mökki In the summer, Hostel Café Koti provides an extra specialty, a separate terrace on the upper level called Mökki (Cottage). In Mökki you can eat, enjoy a few drinks and

even bath in an old-fashioned bathing tub. A truly Finnish summer atmosphere is available right in the centre of the city. innish services are known for their quality all over the world. This quality really matters in specialised stores, such as opticians. The experienced entrepreneur behind Brillet, optometrist Pasi Hiukka, knows why quality is worth the investment. ”Eyesight is an important sense, and we only have one pair of eyes, so it is important to take good care of them. With high-quality optician services and products, you ensure that your eyesight stays good for a long time.”, says Hiukka. “In addition, high-quality products last longer. So it becomes more economical over time, when you do not need to buy new glasses or sunglasses every year”, Hiukka adds. The slogan of Brillet is ”slightly better local optician”, which can also be seen in their range of products. Their frames include well-known international brands such

The quality of sunglasses matters Summer is the time for sunglasses. Too often people buy cheap sunglasses from somewhere, just to notice that they don’t fit your head or are otherwise impossible to use. Optometrist Pasi Hiukka knows that the right kind of sunglasses really make a difference. ”In addition to a good and durable frame, high-quality sunglasses have optically refined lenses, which do not distort the view, like a plastic lens does. This way, the field of vision stays clear no matter where you look”, Hiukka concludes. Brillet offers sunglasses from Andy Wolf, Oakley and Maui Jim, which all are famous brands. The entrepreneur himself suggests buying your sunglasses based on their intended use. “Protecting one’s eyesight is not just about seeing well, but also in several hobbies one needs to protect the eye from different kinds of injuries. Nowadays you can buy sunglasses that have been specifically designed for playing tennis, golf or baseball, for fishing or for cycling, to mention a few”, Hiukka tells. A summer traveller should be prepared for sudden or surprising situations, but if the need is acute, Brillet can also help on a tight schedule. “We have a comprehensive range of contact lenses, and we also do quick fixes to eyeglasses and sunglasses. We also provide acute services of an eye specialist”, finishes optometrist Pasi Hiukka.

CHOCODELI - chocolate worth many tales

Chocolate unites people all around the world. Usually, when visiting another country, it is worth checking out the variety of chocolate available. While in Rovaniemi, it pays off to visit the world’s northernmost chocolate factory, ChocoDeli. TEXT Timo Tapaninen PHOTOS Timo Tapaninen and ChocoDeli

C

hocoDeli is also featured in the spring edition of our magazine, but since the company and its range of products are constantly developing, there is always more to say about this local specialty business. They typically renew their services as the season changes, so the question is: what is new for the summer of 2018? Before talking about the new range, let’s recap the basics about ChocoDeli. The best person to introduce them is the CEO and founder of the company, Jouko Rajanen. ”ChocoDeli is a café and a patisserie specialised in chocolate. It is located in the pedestrian street, right in the heart of Rovaniemi city centre. We think like artisans in terms of chocolate, with passion, pride and Lappish courage. In addition to chocolate, we provide cakes, pastries, bread and in the summertime also food and drinks”, says Jouko.

ROVANIEMI

ChocoDeli products are always handmade – and they are characterised by their impressively high quality. ”Our products are small pieces of art that are usually bought and given to those special people in one’s life. In addition to quality, the use of northern ingredients such as cranberry, cloudberry and reindeer, is important to us. These surprising tastes have been carefully chosen and provide you with a new and exciting experience when tasting them, says Jouko Rajanen. Summer terrace for 60 people Located in Rovaniemi city centre, ChocoDeli will expand further into the pedestrian street during the summer. The company will open a summer terrace with a 60 person seating capacity. When outside, it is wonderful to enjoy the beautiful and long days and evenings that Lapland has to offer. ChocoDeli’s summer favourite is the

artisan pizza, handmade from the beginning. To supplement it, you can order a salad of your liking as well as tasty drinks. Alcoholic beverages are another new addition to the business for the coming summer. Selling them in a café or a patisserie was not possible before 2018, in which during this year, the Finnish alcohol legislation was relaxed radically. Entrepreneur Jouko Rajanen is excited about the new opportunity: “Selling alcoholic beverages is a nice addition for us, and it will liven up the Rovaniemi pedestrian street as a whole. The feeling found in some central European countries will be found here too. Our summer choices include at least wine, sparkling wine, beer and long drink – a Finnish specialty”, Rajanen states. When visiting ChocoDeli, it is worth getting familiar with their specialty coffees. ”Made of several different beans, the cof-

fee alternatives have been chosen by us so that they go nicely with our chocolate flavours”, reveals Rajanen. Nowadays specialty chocolates and in particular spicy chocolate are a favourite among many chocolate enthusiasts. ChocoDeli provides Georgia Ramon chocolate products, which include, for instance, Carolina Reaper – a dark chocolate with chili. The Carolina Reaper has been classified as the hottest chili in the world, so this chocolate is guaranteed to give you a little bit of a kick. For those looking for a softer taste or something other than chocolate, ChocoDeli’s new products include for example, Johan Bulow’s blueberry and buckthorn liquorice, as well as the already familiar collection by the local Arctic Ice Cream.

for a short time be given the strength of a wolverine, the eyes of a snowy owl and the speed of a reindeer. Try to make sure you cross the Arctic Circle at precisely the right time. But hold on, how can you see a full moon during the summer night if the sun shines all the time? It’s probably best to ask Santa Claus…

Connections Own car: The Santa Claus Village is located 8 km north of Rovaniemi. The destination is easily spotted with its towers and grand gateway through which the E75 road (Sodankyläntie) runs.

By bus: Santa’s Express Buses depart once an hour from the Rovaniemi Railway Station every day: Local bus network -> bus number 8. Rovaniemen Airport Santa Claus Official Airport is located just two kilometres from the Santa Claus Village

ARCTIC CIRCLE HUSKY PARK

-Come and meet genuine Siberian huskies also in the summertime TEXT Tanja Hyväri PHOTOS Timo Tapaninen

W

hen you think about Lapland, huskies are usually involved in the resulting image with their blue eyes and fast running in the arctic scenery. In this image the dogs run as a team and pull a sleigh with happy people screaming out of pure joy as the snow crunches beneath the skids. But what about when the weather gets hot during the summer – what do the huskies do then? Husky Park, which has already been running for dozens of years in the Arctic Circle, is the place to find some answers regarding the summertime activities of huskies. The park is open all year round and it is the place to meet the gorgeous, genuine and original Siberian huskies. Let’s consult the executive director of the park, Kristian Erkkilä. ”This summer we have 82 dogs, with 2-3 puppies being born every year, which means we have a constant cuteness warning in force. The activities in Husky Park during the summer differ from winter in that the Siberian huskies with heavy fur are not made to run as much during the heat. It is still possible to come and pet them though, and we can always arrange summer cart-drives and trekking trips with the huskies”, says Erkkilä. The early summer cart route of the Husky Park is called Jenga, and it is about 500 metres long. During late summer the route may be extended a little bit and the magic of speed can be experienced even in the summer. Weather permitting, the summer cart route is driven daily at 12:30 pm right after the guided tour of the park, which begins daily at noon. In addition to meeting the huskies, if you are interested in going trekking with them, you can join the park’s Husky Trek without pre-reservation. The trek begins daily at 2 pm. Getting to know the huskies is a nice summer activity, even if you are travelling alone. The guides in the Husky Park can answer all kinds of questions, for instance who is the leader of the pack in the park. ”There is no one leader, because there are so many dogs here. Usually the oldest dogs are most respected, but due to pulling nature, our retired dogs find a new home when they reach the age of about 12 years”, says Erkkilä, the executive director. Arctic Circle Husky Park is open during the summer daily from 11 am to 2 pm and in the winter from 10 am to 4 pm (from December 15 to January 9 from 10 am to 5 pm). Through booking, the park may be open at other times as well. For short runs and safaris (500 m, 2 km) booking in advance is not necessary, but for longer safaris, it is required. If you are travelling as a group, it is good to confirm visits beforehand through email. Prior experience is not needed for operating with the huskies.

SANTA´S HOLIDAY VILLAGE Services for travellers for more than six decades In the Arctic Circle, in Santa Claus Village, it is Christmas all year round. One of the destinations in the area that is open throughout the year is Santa´s Holiday Village, with its roots going back to 1969. At that time, the current CEO Inga Pokka-Jääskö’s parents Olavi and Hannele Pokka established a reindeer skin business, with the idea being to produce reindeer skins as souvenirs. he Pokkas family expanded their activities from reindeer skins to other souvenirs and presents in 1977. Already then, the ten-yearold Inga was spending most of her spare time in the Arctic Circle. One of the pioneering businesses in Santa Claus Village has since grown to be a producer of versatile travel services. Change of the generation in 1994 The mid-1990s in Finland were a time of severe economic challenges. The Pokka family business modified their operations such that the parents, Olavi and Hannele, gave the souvenir business to their daughter Inga and her husband Marko Jääskö. Although times were tough, there was ample belief in the future and especially in the future of travel.

ROVANIEMI

During Inga and Marko’s time the company has expanded several times, and nowadays Santa´s Holiday Village is a dream come true for a traveller. In addition to souvenirs, they offer accommodation along with restaurant and programme services – the most important of them being the chance to meet Santa Claus every day of the year. Versatile and modern services for the travellers Although the years have passed, Santa´s Holiday Village shop is still the bedrock

of the company. They provide traditional Lappish products and souvenirs such as reindeer skins, Lappish mugs, high-quality postcards and t-shirts, and books and videos of Lapland, Santa Claus and Finland – not to forget original Lappish food. One extra nice thing that you can obtain in their shop is a genuine certificate of crossing the Arctic Circle. All of Santa´s Holiday Village accommodation have been built in the 2010s, so satisfaction is fully guaranteed. Food experiences are provided by the new Three Elves Restaurant, the lobby bar at

herishing kindness is one of the missions of Santa Claus’s life. He loves children and children-minded, and he is always ready to talk and act to promote children’s welfare and happiness. Santa Claus is for sure the world’s most pleasant and kind-hearted person. What does Santa do in the summer? Santa Claus’s summer activities include, in addition to meeting kind people, a lot of outdoor activities. His love for nature is known all over the world. He and his helpers spend a lot of time in the forests, Lappish mountains and the wilderness. Sometimes they go with the reindeer, sometimes with a dog team, skis or a rowing boat. Picking berries in the summer and looking at the northern lights in the winter are his most favourite pastimes in nature. Santa Claus thinks that healthy nature is one of the best gifts that we can give to the coming generations. During the summer, it is a good time to start thinking about presents. CLOUDBERRY VILLAGE Photos: RanuaZoo & Timo Tapaninen

R

anua is a municipality in southern Lapland, about 80 kilometres from Rovaniemi. Although it is known for its zoo, filled with arctic species and its cloudberry market, the area also offers other things to experience for the summer traveller. Travel industry in the municipality is developing fast, and a traveller should get to know all of the services available in the municipality – including the surrounding villages. The main attraction of Ranua can be easily named – it is the polar bear cub Sisu who resides in RanuaZoo, and is celebrating his first birthday in the Summer of 2018. A ‘cub’ is a funny expression for him though, since being a male, he is already larger than his mother Venus and weighs over 300 kilograms. The growth curves show that he will become a giant of a bear – a full 600 kilograms of attraction. Cloudberry fever hits during Mid-Summer Ranua is one of the most popular travel destinations in Lapland during the summer. From July onwards, the whole village bustles due to the cloudberry, which is the symbol of the village and is now ripe

HOW TO GET HERE? The nearest airport for scheduled flights along with a railway station are both situated in Rovaniemi which is 82 kilometres away. The municipality has its own airfield for small planes. The nearest port is in Kemi, 137 kilometres away. Ranua can be reached by bus from Rovaniemi or Oulu. Especially during the summer, both reindeer and elk are active in the Ranua area, so be very careful when travelling with your own car. There are no parking fees in Ranua.

enough to be picked. Cloudberry fever is contracted by tens of thousands of people, and you cannot avoid noticing it in Ranua during the summer. If you have never picked any cloudberries, put on your rubber boots, spread some mosquito repellent on your skin, and head out to the marsh to try it. Ranua is one of the best places in the world to find cloudberries. Just look around the side rouds, where the orher cars are parked and go out to the swamps. Cloudberries are filled with vitamins, a true Lappish superfood. Ranua is an easy-going place Accommodation in Ranua is relatively cheap and the variety of it these days is good. Popular places for accommodation include the Holiday Village Gulo Gulo and RanuaZoo Camping, which are both in the zoo area, as well as Lake Ranua Camping Site. If you are looking for something a little bit more exotic, you can sleep in an old submarine terminal or in a hay barn. There are also several villas and cabins with good user ratings in the area. If you are staying during the cloudberry market, it is wise to book in advance, since the small municipality receives thousands of visitors

3 TIPS FOR RANUAZOO 1. Reserve a full day for your visit so that you can see as many open feeding shows as possible. They are organised four times a day. 2. Ask beforehand about an opportunity for a guided tour (fee applies). With a guide you can admire some of the animals at a close range, since guided tours always include a feeding show. 3. The zoo organises short courses for crafting Lappish souvenirs. Attending the course is highly recommended.

during this time. Like all municipalities in Lapland, Ranua is also large in terms of area measure. A traveller should also visit the nearby villages. As you head a little bit further from the centre, you can find horse tourism sites, boat safaris, arctic nature services, more exotic accommodation, saunas, summer fishing, cultural paths, small cafes and shops, and hiking areas. While visiting the villages, you will also learn about their vitality, ways of working, fishing, berry picking, and ways of life in the clean countryside. Information on the services provided by the villages can be found in the Ranua Zoo information board and in all places of accommodation. You can also call the municipality travel services about the different options.

A new species Pallas’s cat arrives at RanuaZoo. The newcomer is looking for a name!

RanuaZoo has high expectations in preperation for the summer. The polar bear cub Sisu, who was born one year ago, has proved to be very active and has become famous all around the world in a short time. Sisu got his name through a naming competition. This name was chosen as it represents the 100-year-history and the relentless nature of the Finnish people. RanuaZoo is receiving a new species this summer called the Pallas´s cat. The newcomer is yet to be named, and a naming competition is running until August

They live alone, are threatened and look a little bit grumpy, as you can see from the picture. RanuaZoo is open from 9 am to 7 pm throughout the summer until the end of August. In the area you can find cafe and restaurant services as well as accommodation and safaris. If you feel like shopping, the zoo castle provides Lappish-themed souvenirs, delicacies and funny costumes to take home with you. The castle also includes a wine shop and Tenavakulma, which specialises in children’s clothing. Those looking for something sweet should pay a visit to the Fazer factory candy store, offering all of Fazer’s legendary confectionaries. The zoo store located in the main building is a paradise for animal fans, where you can even get your own polar bear.

SEVEN STEPS TO SAVE THE OCEAN

A new piece of environmental art in RanuaZoo is taking a stance

RanuaZoo is in the true sense, a centre right by nature. When arriving in the area you may be surprised at first that the place where the animals live is right in the middle of a forest. Nature is an important matter for Lappish people, and this summer RanuaZoo has paid close attention to the protection of biological diversity through the means of environmental art. TEXT Timo Tapaninen PHOTOS RanuaZoo / Timo Tapaninen

S

even Steps to Save the Ocean is a work of art located by the shore of RanuaZoo – more specifically in a 100 by 150 metre large blockfield. This means we are talking about a fairly large work of art, whose location on an ancient sea shore has been carefully selected. This work of art was designed by Maija Kovari , a sculptor

50

and architect from Tampere. She says that the idea of the stance-taking entity was only formed after she saw the area. ”I have not spent too much time in Lapland during my life, and when I started this project the viewpoint was not yet clear. When I arrived at the scene and saw this ancient sea bottom and blockfield, I immediately had the idea that the work of

art should be related to protection of seas and nature.”, says Kovari. It is difficult to describe the work through writing, but an idea of it can be acquired from the sketches. Concretely, the work of art consists of a 135-metre-long wooden path and several 2-10 metre wide metallic sentences that have been installed in the blockfield, that become part of the

The path is easily walkable and the story of this area is partially told through these sentences. The sentences are written in three different languages: Chinese, English and Finnish, which takes into consideration the international nature of both Lappish travel and the theme of the work of art. The designer, Maija Kovari, says the message of the artwork is easy to understand. ”RanuaZoo is specialised in arctic animals. From the point of view of arctic nature, it is essential that we know how to deal with climate change. It is easy to feel powerless in the face of such a serious issue, but I did not want to increase despair through my art. I wanted to build hope”, explains Kovari. The problem is global Although the viewpoint is arctic, the problem is global, according to the artist. ”Through a multilingual piece of work, I wanted to express that this topic matters for each and every one of us. Everyone can make a choice that has meaning. This work of art portrays these choices as part of ordinary life.”, says Kovari. The wood and metal industry professionals who built the piece of art are all from

Lapland, expressing the range of local professionalism. The sketch was made while Maija Kovari was working on a research project at the University of Lapland in 2017. The aim of the research project was to study how contemporary art can address

topical issues that are truly connected to Lapland, becoming a relevant and socially sustainable part of the growing tourism in the region.

In the areas around Ruka-Valtavaara and Iivaara the contours of the landscape are the most varied. The lowest area is the the Eastern part of the Oulanka river valley where the river flows only 135 m above sea level. Lots of summer activities Kuusamo in summer is full of wonderful surprises. RIIPISEN WILD GAME RESTAURANTS AND SHOPS From a producer and seller of wild game delicacies, to a versatile leisure-time shopping paradise The story of the Riipinen family is an interesting one. The father of the family, ”Wild game Pekka” was a passionate hunter and fisher already at a young age. His wife Päivi, who was crowned Miss Finland in 1979, also enjoyed spending time in forests, collecting mushrooms and berries. The couple’s common hobby was turning the hunted or collected local products into a meal for their family. The meals were so popular that slowly they came up with the idea of starting their own business. TEXT Timo Tapaninen PHOTOS Timo Tapaninen

P

ekka and Päivi’s business dream began with the establishment of a small wild game shop in the centre of Kuusamo in 1989. They offered for example bear, reindeer, elk, and also alligator at that time. A few years later, the couple decided to expand their business, guided by a dream. Or at least so the story goes, as told by the current CEO of the family business Mikael Riipinen, who at that time was still a child. “It was a snowy morning in January 1992, when my mother Päivi woke up with a vivid dream. She had forced my father Pekka up from the bed telling: “I saw this dream that we rented a place in Ruka (a skiing centre next to Kuusamo) and I had pictures of dollars in my eyes!” Ordered by his wife, Pekka had to leave at once to Ruka and there was no coming back before finding premises for a store. My father found an empty place through an odd coincidence, and three weeks later, on February 17, 1992, they opened Riipisen Wild Game Restaurant (then known as Riipisen’s game café and shop)”, recalls Pekka and Päivi’s son Mikael.

YLLÄS / KOLARI Breathe the cleanest air in the world and ride your lungs out Imagine cycling up a beautiful arctic fell in the middle of the night with the midnight sun illuminating your way or under the blazing northern lights across a frozen forest with trees like snow monsters. S

ome 170 km north of the arctic circle in Finnish Lapland lies Ylläs. One of Lapland’s leading winter destinations with the largest ski resort in Finland, Ylläs has all the services an active holiday maker can hope for. Ylläs is also a perfect gateway to the Ylläs-Pallastunturi National Park which is the most popular national park in Finland with over half a million visitors each year. In June 2017 the regulations for the park changed to allowing mountain biking in almost all the hiking trails of the park. The park stretches from its’ southern point in Ylläs some 130 kilometers north to Hetta. A 2016 international study revealed that in the park you can breathe the cleanest air in the world.

Following the opening of the nearby national park for cyclists the Ylläs mountain bike trail network will grow to a respectable 450 km and when you combine all the areas connected to the national park the trail network is a 900 km long arctic playground for mountain bikers’. “This marks a significant change in the use of the trail network within the national park. Before mountain biking had to be specifically allowed on the trails, but now it’s allowed everywhere except on a few trails on the basis of rider safety. So instead of having 35 km of dedicated mountain bike trails out of the hundreds of kilometers of trails, now it’s forbidden only on 6 km of trails.” says Janne-Juhani Haarma, the CEO of Visit Ylläs.

Cycling is an all year around activity in Ylläs. Ylläs offers a wide variety of possibilities for cyclists. Sport Resort Ylläs one can find a year around gondola and a bike park in the summertime. Road cyclists can also find beautiful routes with plenty of vertical and the stunning scenery of Lappish summer. The main attraction is still the national park and the

connecting trail network. Single track trails leading to the tops of the fells and around lakes and forests should be on every cyclist’s bucket list. The midnight sun, the abundance of reindeer and other wild life and the authentic Lappish villages in Ylläs offer unique experiences. The cycling season in Ylläs used to start in May and end in the September. But with fat bikes there is no reason why one should stop cycling when the snow hits the ground “We have been focusing on winter biking for the past few years and it is really paying off. Fat bikes were a regular sight in the wilderness cafes last winter as before they served cross country skiers almost exclusively. In the winter time we have 100 km of regularly maintained winter biking trails” Haarma continues Services for all kinds of cyclists All the sport shops in Ylläs offer bikes for rent from regular bikes to fat bikes and electric bikes. Some also offer guided tours. The vast trail network offers suitable trails for rides of all levels. There are plenty of nice restaurants in the area and some wilderness cafes are open in the summer time as well. You can find updated information about the services in www.yllas.fi/en
